The Cure: Disintegration (1989)

Beck Did It Better Podcast 1989
About this episodeDear Penthouse Forum, this week we decided to take off our pants and jacket when recording the best podcast about The Cure and the 116th greatest album of all time, Disintegration. Before we get to Robert Smith's spin moves on the album we take a voicemail about whether this podcast is kid friendly and what co-host we'd switch places with. We talk about fancy pumpkin patches and the optimum amount of time to stay in Las Vegas. We also become the best Lizzo podcast and best Blink 182 podcast when we discuss encores and ticket prices. Then at (53:00) we serenade you with a love song and lullab

[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums is decided by

[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the

[00:09]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research

[00:14]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it better

[00:20]we are all the way up to album 116 guys that's like the second time you can get your license

[00:25]it's when you turn 116 years old a lot of people don't know that it's not 32 or 48 no it's you get

[00:32]it again when you're 116 okay and if it's anything like when i got my license you take the car out

[00:37]and immediately almost get t-boned enforcing what you always knew about yourself that you were a

[00:41]failure uh and we have robin thought we were going to talk about our t-boned experiences on this

[00:47]podcast that reminds me of when i one summer dear penthouse one summer i worked on the golf course

[00:53]let me tell you about this

[00:55]we were playing for the ladies playing from the ladies tees if you know what i mean

[01:00]uh just so great that you're like somebody's like you know what god you know banging that old lady

[01:09]on a golf course was great but you know what would make it better if the whole world knew

[01:13]about it i better write penthouse and let them know that i have this story why would i hide my

[01:19]light under a bushel i gotta share this with the world yeah it's like i don't have any friends that

[01:23]want to hear this at all but you know who does

[01:25]the same people who buy penthouse not gonna go to that we've got disintegration by we've got so

[01:32]let's jump right from that penthouse story too we've got disintegration by the cure

[01:35]as you guys know the other night uh we had a little special guest on the podcast uh she didn't

[01:41]know she's a special guest on the podcast but you could hear her for about 50 of it as she uh

[01:46]she helped out in the background so let's here's a little song dedicated to

[01:49]uh i just like to call her my special helper here at home so and please don't tell her i said that

[01:55]let's see she's not listening what's up everybody welcome to k-rock k-r-o-b listen you get to that

[02:07]point in the podcast where you're recording on the living room and you don't care who's there

[02:10]and i've heard people say this is the best years of your marriage

[02:16]but it turns out i didn't hear him correctly and it turns out they were saying

[02:20]this is the best years of your marriage oh this is

[02:25]dishes i was recording a podcast and she knew

[02:30]she decided it was time what's going on in the background to begin

[02:37]the dishes she began to do

[02:43]no one could hear me over the din seriously rob how long have you been home you couldn't

[02:53]have washed those dishes before you got home

[02:55]what happens at the three to six month part is that when they start flaking pots and pans in the

[03:01]back of your apartment

[03:03]i thought 10 minutes you'd be through

[03:11]she would quickly scrub and then she'd give a rinse

[03:19]but after a work too

[03:25]the noise became quite an irritant

[03:32]it's true

[03:34]she scrubs and she sprays she loves to do the dishes she's addicted i'd say

[03:45]every day she never misses it if i would have helped it be done fast but i'm doing the podcast

[03:55]i am doing the podcast

[03:59]can't help with the when you want to hear about the greatest

[04:02]i gotta tell you about my long my long con my boss's wife

[04:12]long con your penthouse you'll never believe what happened to me in jail

[04:19]jack

[04:19]did it better oh god i get it see

[04:25]now if you really listen to my foley work here where i've got the dishes

[04:29]you can hear my wife in the background you can yelling at me to stop it because while i was

[04:35]recording this song i was clanging the dishes literally for two minutes and 36 seconds

[04:39]and she said please you're driving me insane and i was like yeah don't you see don't you see

[04:46]russell did you hear that did you hear that in the background i couldn't it just sounds like

[04:50]something i must be familiar with oh my god oh my god it's it's a learn to tune it out

[04:57]so listen this is beck did it better and today we are talking about the cure and i've got three guys

[05:03]who are the disease and a simple uh antifungal cream is the cure actually i've got russell in

[05:09]minnesota russell how are you doing rob i wanted to thank you for having me over i left you with

[05:14]some photographs and pictures of my trickery but i did want to apologize for the stains on your

[05:19]carpet and the stains and i'm sorry i didn't mean to hurt you but i did want to apologize for the

[05:20]on your scenery oh god

[05:22]stains on your scenery honestly i would say the number one thing that's caused stains in my house

[05:30]is my kids slime and they like put it on the they throw it up and it hits the ceiling and it makes

[05:35]a stain they put it on the wall makes a stain i've got slime stains all over the place uh i've

[05:40]got matt in minneapolis matt how are you doing tonight uh good rob i've been uh hoping so long

[05:46]that this podcast is over that i almost believe that it was real

[05:50]i can't do 500 minus 116 in my head but i think it's over a big number

[05:56]i've got a long way to go i've got aaron out in california aaron was telling us the other day

[06:01]that his wife was a real keeper and he knew it was true when she wore that white suit and had

[06:05]that thing that makes all the smoke uh aaron how are you doing today man rob it's i've been looking

[06:11]so long at these pictures of you it's nice to see you live and in person let's talk about

[06:14]you guys are so nice on the cure albums i like the cure the cure is robert smith is nice to me

[06:20]okay and and this might amaze you it is not the ohio state robert smith that's the head of this

[06:26]that's the lead singer in this band was that surprising to anybody else nor is it famed

[06:31]physicist robert smith question mark who wrote a mathematical paper on how to survive the zombie

[06:35]apocalypse well that's the end of the that's got if that's not the end of the podcast

[06:39]we haven't even gotten into a segment

[06:44]oh

[06:44]there's actually the math behind the the

[06:50]spread of the zombie apocalypse meanwhile the queen guitarist is laughing like what a dumb

[06:54]shit that guy's done in the physics what a loser uh listen uh i'm trying to think of more robert

[07:00]smith jokes i don't even have any robert smith was like he had this spin move i was looking at

[07:04]robert smith highlight tapes and it's just constant uh yeah pat summer all saying like

[07:09]robert smith with another spin move for a first down yeah that's what russ is listening to on

[07:14]his wireless headphones it's the only thing that makes them hard anymore it's robert

[07:18]highlight

[07:18]oh

[07:19]impressive for such a like a tall lanky guy too like he was all legs and elbows and had that spin

[07:26]move somehow his headphone falls out it's right next to her ear and she just hears like and that's

[07:30]gonna do it 10 5 he's in it's like what are you listening to this is so strange i always remember

[07:35]robert smith because they always talked about him being such like a an intelligent athlete they

[07:40]would be like he almost was a he almost studied stars or he almost went to medical school it's

[07:44]like yeah medical school no because they said well he's he's gonna stop football or is he can

[07:48]go back and be a doctor he's gonna go back and be a doctor he's gonna go back and be a doctor

[07:49]and then he's a fucking announcer on tv i was like dr liar big lie i'm actually quite smart i'm going

[07:56]to go to medical school and then he's just he's equally as smart as like mike dicka and i said

[08:00]smart okay let's not talk about me saying smart instead of smart it's actually a new word the

[08:05]kids are saying these days it's pretty smart of me to say uh so listen let's get right into the

[08:11]voicemail

[08:12]voicemail

[08:13]the freaks on the phone won't leave me alone

[08:19]hey boys uh long time listener first time caller i just wanted to let you know that i was listening

[08:26]to random episodes up until about the end of july here then realized i was missing out on about 60

[08:32]episodes so what i did was i crammed through every single one of them and finished them up about a

[08:36]week and a half ago thanks to you guys my kids now know pretty much everything there is to know

[08:41]about anything that doesn't make sense in life i appreciate that because i let them listen to it

[08:46]in the car like i've so listen i gotta stop this this real quick

[08:49]kids should not be listening to this podcast okay i wouldn't even know where to begin to explain what

[08:55]the penthouse forums joke was earlier it's like yeah you kids know what a porno magazine is oh

[09:01]yeah okay imagine like a website but like it's in a magazine paper yeah and then imagine that like

[09:07]there's all these naked women but there's also some stuff you could read and i guess guys prologue

[09:11]to a book or something yeah yeah russ knew is in the beginning so that's strike one against russ

[09:16]uh and it's like yeah so i guess that they just don't know what to do with it

[09:19]i mean you would you'd sound like a psychopath you'd sound like a it's like it's like a caveman

[09:25]trying to masturbate right like he thinks about like some smooth rocks you saw once or something

[09:30]like it makes no sense i mean to be fair i mean if kids are there are cartoons in there and some

[09:35]of them so i mean the kids would probably want to look at cartoons friendly content i'm sure you

[09:40]pervs know a lot about penthouse okay let's move on here i was just joking i looked it up in a

[09:43]research academic way i mentioned before and i really don't care what you guys talk about because

[09:49]the other thing is is my wife officially hates pretty much all of your voices from hearing you

[09:54]guys talk so much because i played it on speaker on my phone everywhere i went all the time uh

[10:01]questions for you guys i know uh so let's talk about that i i do think that first of all i know

[10:07]i know how this caller feels because my wife also hates the podcast with the fire of a thousand suns

[10:11]so i totally get that can you imagine just listening to bits of the podcast like just

[10:17]kind of coming in and out like he's walking into the room and then one time we're laughing

[10:19]really hard when we say time machine and then like i want to remind you guys in the strokes

[10:24]episode i had forgotten this there's a big running bit about ball gags like we talk about ball gags

[10:28]over and over and over like i had forgotten that i was like oh no like you'd be like what is my

[10:34]husband listening to i've made a huge mistake but isn't that just what all spouses are thinking

[10:39]right now i think i get a lot of nods yes yes i get a lot of nods yes okay sorry here we go

[10:44]you're having some issues with uh the anna stuff um have you ever tried bleaching it

[10:49]that cleaned things up and helped you keep you from breaking out a little bit you know

[10:53]bleaching the anna sometimes works sometimes it's preferred

[10:56]second question for you guys as a group if you had to pick up your entire family or everything

[11:04]you are and had to switch with one of the others in the group and live in their situation with

[11:09]their jobs uh would you do it or who would you select to take the place of so all i got boys

[11:16]keep it going i'm just gonna get this out of the way i am not

[11:19]gonna switch with russ okay and i don't really want to get into why but i'm just gonna say it

[11:23]i had it written it's a great place to live it's a great place to grow up i would live in richfield

[11:31]you wouldn't want to go to vegas or what's the deal yeah i had it written down that i would

[11:34]switch with russ and that was gonna be my big joke but that i've decided to reverse that and

[11:38]say absolutely not would not be russ let's just be very clear about that so russell who would you

[11:43]switch with one of us if you had to just pretty much take on our lives he was talking about jobs

[11:49]what aaron does at all and in fact i got a text about it today still don't understand

[11:53]what he does um russell who would you pick your full lives we're talking full lives i have to say

[12:00]i know i've known aaron i've been the closest friends with aaron the longest out of the the

[12:04]four of us but aaron lives in a world where they don't care about having air conditioning and i

[12:08]just can't imagine doing that in my life like it's it would be such a big part of my life to be hot

[12:14]and uncomfortable all the time that i would have to eliminate aaron right off the bat because i

[12:17]need modern appliances in my life i

[12:19]choose not to live without modern appliances so aaron unfortunately is out it's nothing personal

[12:24]it's just about your your selections of amenities it's it's aaron and laura zingles wilder is who

[12:29]russell doesn't want to be those are the two people read a book people i'm smart i'm not just

[12:35]reading pendos forums who would you what else russell continue this logic i i'm gonna continue

[12:41]with the elimination principle now i'm gonna eliminate rob because i don't really think i

[12:45]want to live in new york and i don't want to be like a an east coast elite

[12:49]i live in new york we have the best hot dogs even though they taste like shit we've got the

[12:54]best pizza although it tastes like every other pizza you can buy in a mall everywhere and so i

[12:58]just don't think i want to be a new york elitist so i'm gonna say rob is also out so i'm gonna

[13:02]switch and i'm gonna i'm gonna live about two miles from where i live now in matt's house instead

[13:07]that's i would love to see russell going early for the school pickup line just to look on his

[13:12]face when he has to leave the house to wait to be the traffic magic mike instead or not

[13:17]no this is free fuckfest

[13:19]uh so yeah you would pick matt rosie what do you think who would you pick

[13:26]i yeah i don't know i i i love russell's uh happy-go-lucky first of all for you to pause

[13:34]that long and say i don't know is so insulting like it's so insulting that you look at the three

[13:38]of us and you're just like jesus christ i don't know who i'd switch like you know what fuck you

[13:42]i was trying to follow russell's footsteps and i also you know i love russell like a brother but i

[13:47]i just don't think i can keep up with his

[13:49]freewheeling lifestyle i could not handle all of the trips to nashville uh i just can't keep i

[13:55]couldn't hang so i'm not gonna choose russell matt is off the board so i'm not taking matt so

[14:01]obviously i'm going to new york baby i would love to live in manhattan i love that rob always takes

[14:07]advantage of everything there is to do in manhattan and outside of manhattan when the

[14:11]apple orchards call so i'm in i'm taking rob's life yeah just like today when i stayed inside

[14:17]all day and watched football on a tiny computer screen because my dad was like oh my god i'm not

[14:19]big enough for a tv so it's super fun uh and i do not have a sonos soundbar matt who would you

[14:27]pick to switch with well i i was gonna try to go a little bit you know i would take russell's job

[14:32]russell's got an extremely interesting job so i'd take russell's job i would take rosie's sense

[14:38]of adventure with uh putting chickens in cans and going hiking up mountains and things like that

[14:42]and i'd live in new york i mean i would i would absolutely love to move to new york

[14:47]and live there i mean every live

[14:49]every band goes through new york you wouldn't miss one show that you would want to see things

[14:54]like that all that stuff so if i had to pick one rob i would i would take living in new york so

[15:00]i think i would have to pick i would have to pick aaron i think i would love to live out in the bay

[15:04]area it sounds great it sounds like if you don't need air conditioning rust that's just because

[15:07]the temperature is just right i don't know aaron's got a huge dong and that's the first thing i would

[15:11]do aaron if i had your life and your body okay the first thing i'd do is i'd get in a mirror and i'd

[15:16]look at myself okay

[15:19]it would be pretty awesome i think it would be pretty good uh that's what we were talking about

[15:25]right switching bodies by the way just you know all jokes aside that was probably the best call

[15:30]we've ever gotten ever maybe you know maybe the the anus joke anus anus rosie doesn't like anus

[15:39]maybe that joke okay but you know everything after i mean that that was at least the top

[15:44]two phone call of all time we pretty much haven't received anything better than that do you think

[15:49]when you call the backslide rob oh 802-277-BEC and feel free because i can tell you there's a lot

[15:55]of space it's wide open right now uh almost to the point of getting nervous about it maybe think of

[16:00]another video to review uh do you think if you get your anus bleached you'd have to show somebody

[16:05]right like if you you'd have to go home and be like hey can i like check this out like it's like

[16:09]a manicure or pedicure right but you gotta well the only reason to do it i would think is that

[16:15]you're showing it right yeah some form or fashion keep that to yourself you got to keep that to yourself

[16:19]you got that gleaming yeah listening white thing you probably want to share it with the world

[16:24]isn't isn't am i off on that rob what's your thoughts

[16:28]yeah i guess i mean if i was like in a uh abu grab or something i wouldn't care what my haircut is

[16:34]you know what i mean like nobody's seeing me so like i guess how do we get here if it's not

[16:39]sitting in it if it's if it's not in the light of day i'm not i don't care about it why are we

[16:44]in abu grave that's a good point because i i also think if i got it bleached i would try to be showing

[16:49]you know what i mean i'd be like oh i need to oh who dropped this penny over here you know this big

[16:54]white penny like i'm just just wearing my kilt to work with no underwear

[16:59]just blinding light comes out of the kilt oh god his anus is so white do you guys ever go to like

[17:08]a social function and you think hey maybe i know something that you know about someone here about

[17:12]something in general and all the rest of these people don't know and you kind of have a smirk

[17:15]on your face do you think if you went through life with the bleached asshole you would like

[17:19]every room you went to you would constantly be thinking oh these people don't even know they

[17:24]don't know they don't know how gleaming white it is yes i gotta say though just and i don't want to

[17:29]get into this but just based on like evidence i've seen in my life yeah it can't stay bleached for

[17:36]that long can it you know what i mean like how long does that last does that even last like the

[17:41]walk home if it's humid out like it just seems to be it's like it's like it's like getting your car

[17:49]uh lots of fecal particles in it for some reason even no matter how well you take care of yourself

[17:54]it seems to always be there it's an embarrassing point so i thank this caller for bringing up

[17:59]this possibility for us and do the services like give you like a punch card can you go back in and

[18:05]get like i would assume yes after five there's got to be a frequent flyer yeah like every six

[18:09]is free can you get like a you get like a three-week guarantee on the service or like

[18:15]what's an acceptable performance hey i've been here before i said those stirrups to eight

[18:19]okay let's do it

[18:22]how much how much different would the mark on your your sister's bathtub have looked if you'd

[18:29]be bleaching hey it would have fixed the mark it would have rewiped it it's like a magic eraser that

[18:34]i guess that is a deep pull that's a deep pull you don't know what we're talking about we don't

[18:38]need you we're not trying we're obviously not trying to get new listeners okay that part of

[18:43]our show is done we have talked now about eating we're happy 20 minutes yeah that's a that is a

[18:48]listener plus his kids that's two more listeners

[18:49]i'm assuming they're telling their friends at school downloading i went to a discount anus

[18:54]bleaching place and uh she she opened up a brand new magic eraser and i left i was like this is not

[18:59]this is not gonna work i use this to clean the stylus on my turntable you can they're

[19:05]really great for that oh not the same anus oh my god that's so gross yeah all right listen let's

[19:11]aaron enough please okay let's get into rolling going we're not going to talk about

[19:16]it's time to see what everybody's up to

[19:19]it's time for rolling going it'd be wild if if you were there right and you were up in the stirrups

[19:27]and your asshole was out and all these scientists came in and they said no we said you reached

[19:31]uranus uh aaron rolling going how's it going with you it's rolling going great yeah it's it's uh

[19:40]it's autumn i know you guys like to laugh about my choices seasons but i've autumned and i can't

[19:47]get up i've come to realize that i'm a i'm a

[19:49]huge pumpkin patch fan i love pumpkin patches and

[19:54]i'm i'm a huge pumpkin patch

[20:00]but i've we've reached that unfortunate stage of of life and parenting where my son has a stronger

[20:07]opinion about things than i that i do so of course i want to go out to brentwood to the pumpkin patch

[20:12]where you get to ride a real tractor and there's a corn maze no no there's another pumpkin patch

[20:17]that's 22 to get in and i'm not going to go out and ride a real tractor and there's a corn maze

[20:19]that has blow-up slides and a bouncy ball pit and that is the one we've been to three times so

[20:25]that's that's the pumpkin patch three times my dude you're you are not your kid is not in charge

[20:31]we have to drive by it on the way to and from soccer so you leave soccer at 11 a.m on sunday

[20:35]and it's like well we can go home and fight about lunch or we can go to the pumpkin patch for two

[20:41]hours and he's happy can i go back to who i said i would switch with i'm gonna change my mind

[20:46]rob would i ever go to a two-hour pumpkin patch

[20:49]no no oh my god i don't know i'm concerned now because we're we're traveling next weekend and

[20:55]then we get back and it's halloween i don't know if i'm gonna make it to my favorite pumpkin patch

[20:59]so i'm hopeful that we can get out get out wait that's the thing is that you're mad you're not

[21:02]going to your pumpkin patch this is insane yeah that's this whole table right i'm a person too

[21:06]i matter um why don't you just buy it at like the grocery store can't you just buy them right

[21:10]out in front like it'll it'll take you eight minutes yeah but how many pumpkins do you have

[21:16]at home now like 10 we've only got one pumpkin you don't need a pumpkin every time you go you

[21:20]only have one pumpkin that's too little but like you can't be you're not a fan of like just going

[21:24]and picking out a pumpkin sawing it off and paying for it to go you you gotta like like the full-on

[21:29]they've got brats or they're serving apple cider they're apple pie or something right

[21:35]that's the reason yeah the one way the one i like to go to you get to take a real tractor

[21:40]ride out to the pumpkin patch they got like crazy pumpkins you've never seen before they got a corn

[21:45]maze where you can actually get lost and then you ride back on the real tractor and you like buy

[21:50]some honey at the barn or whatever it's beautiful i like the whole experience i'm not about the

[21:54]pumpkins necessarily there's a great one there's a great one in minnesota called severs corn maze

[22:01]essentially a pumpkin patch let's see i like the problem with it is is right next to the

[22:06]renaissance festival and so and those are for the most part you know up until about last week

[22:13]they're at the exact same time and the traffic is like it's like it's like it's like it's like it's

[22:15]like horrendous absolutely horrendous so you have you you've got about a two-week span of being able

[22:22]to go to that thing at a reasonable hour with a reasonable amount of travel time otherwise you're

[22:27]just getting screwed so no it's it's a it's a tight window for the pumpkin patch people yeah

[22:32]man you gotta hit you hit your right pumpkin patch when you're trying to go behold all ye pumpkins

[22:37]we came to ye wrong location that's somebody looking for the renfair getting lost in the

[22:45]i have very strong recollections of going to renfest renfest i never went to renfest but i

[22:50]remember very strongly going to the municipal liquor store in northfield in february of 2002

[22:56]and there were cases of greenbelt premiums stacked up with renfest stickers on them and we bought out

[23:01]the full bought out the liquor store in cases of greenbelt and there's cases left that skunky stuff

[23:07]stacked up room temperature in our dorm and i think we were still trying to finish that stuff

[23:12]the day we moved out it turns out that college co-eds aren't in the warm

[23:15]green belt premium beer that's expired yes it does not matter how many bodices they're wearing

[23:20]which is the number one reason i'm into the renfair i love a good bodice we told them hey

[23:26]these cases were five bucks a piece now they weren't impressed three three three bucks

[23:30]that's the magic eraser of anal bleaching

[23:35]it's too cheap it's not gonna be good

[23:40]that's an awesome price remember there used to be firehouse liquor too that was out yeah

[23:45]down you know dundas and we used to go and barry from burnsville famously was stuck drinking like

[23:53]i don't know if it was lime vodka or something like that for like a month and a half because

[23:57]he had bought six bottles of lime vodka for like a buck and a half kind of a thing and so that's

[24:03]what he had and he's like well i gotta finish this sometime so yeah that's how i remember whenever i

[24:08]see lime vodka i think of barry from burnsville yuck so yeah it's autumn i'm celebrating the autumn

[24:14]uh that's that's really what's really going with me how's that sounds like hell

[24:17]what you didn't eat any you didn't have anything to eat this week there's nothing good

[24:22]no i had ethiopian on you know actually we had a funny conversation on friday we went out on

[24:26]friday night uh there was a kids night out so the middle school kids and their parents

[24:31]invite the k-5 kids to come to the school from 6 to 8 p.m they put on a movie give them pizza and

[24:38]the parents get to go out so of course when you get this chance as a parent you have to choose

[24:42]somewhere that does not allow

[24:43]children right like you can't go out to any place where you're going to see a kid so we we picked up

[24:49]ethiopian takeout and went to one of our favorite dive bars the kingfish uh they're on telegraph in

[24:54]oakland and we had i had the star special which is now up to eight dollars so that's a shot of

[24:59]rock cut whiskey uh with a red stripe so i had a couple of those and we had some ethiopian takeout

[25:05]and we're in we're eating dinner and this is parents night out it was great it was wonderful

[25:09]but at one point like we're filling up on injera and and um

[25:13]lentils and things and my wife looks at me and says this is a really wonderful dinner but this

[25:18]is not like sexy date night food and i'm thinking like well i definitely made a mistake there this

[25:23]is my one kid's night out of the semester you're not she's not supposed to say anything you just

[25:28]don't say anything as soon as you say it well then yeah it's not but if you don't bring it up

[25:32]just pretend like it is right like power through that should we feel bloated and our fingers smell

[25:38]like food and yeah those are all like clarified butter

[25:43]fingers are not bleached and i agree with you what the fuck is her problem taking an ethiopian

[25:48]takeout to a dive bar i mean who as the one time their kid's not around who wouldn't have thought

[25:52]of that as the perfect date what the fuck are you doing aaron can't you just hear the panties

[25:56]dropping all around america as i'm calling this story so bleached

[26:02]we had we had the ethiopian takeout we had a really nice time though we had a wonderful time

[26:09]you know what i'm back to switching places with you i can show her a good time

[26:13]okay i'm not going to get ethiopian ethiopian food and then going to get

[26:17]rotgut whiskey and a red stripe yeah i think my wife is ready to switch places with me and then

[26:22]go hang out with you guys because there's no way i'm going to an ethiopian restaurant so

[26:26]she has to plan those for times when she knows that i'm not going to be with her so

[26:31]it was delicious best best of fate but i passed it to you matt how's it rolling with matt

[26:35]good good i got a list it's quick list this week i still don't know what flashlights

[26:40]are terrible trying to figure that out these days um

[26:43]i i saw on tv today when i was watching the vikings game that blake shelton is leaving the

[26:49]voice after 23 seasons the voice has been on wait how many seasons of the voice do they have every

[26:54]year so here's my question 23 wait i thought i was 25 i was like that's been on most of my life

[27:00]and then i realized that's not quite true and i was like i think they have like three of them a

[27:03]year kind of a thing yeah and so my question to you guys about that is is that really like an

[27:10]awesome thing or is that completely fucking sad because i don't know i don't know i don't know

[27:13]maybe you can tell which way i'm rolling

[27:15]is it because i cannot name one voice winner like ever in 23 that's the thing yeah shouldn't i know

[27:23]one person that won the voice right and so the voice is not about the people who are singing

[27:29]it's about these clowns that are rolling around in chairs or whatever they god i used to watch

[27:33]those shows though like crazy dancing with the stars i watched everyone uh american idol i

[27:39]watched like the first five seasons i was crazed for that stuff i don't know it's been replaced by

[27:43]house

[27:43]wives and kardashians you know guys we used to have american idol uh the voice and dancing with

[27:49]the stars and now we have housewives of beverly hills the house was atlanta and no jobs so think

[27:57]about that for a second remember that when you go to the polls in three weeks yeah yes

[28:02]that joke by the way is not funny

[28:06]uh next one blink 182 all three members the tom

[28:13]de long is back with blink 182 they're gonna go out on a on a tour um russell our seats that we

[28:20]would sit at they're coming they're opening the u.s leg of their tour in minneapolis on may 4th

[28:26]and i'm sure we'll go because sarah's a big fan but um the seats where we would like to sit you

[28:32]know how we got right off first first level right off the stage so you can see 450 bucks

[28:38]400 i mean this is minneapolis like that's pretty that's pretty

[28:43]normal for new york but 450 bucks to see a punk band from the 90s 2000 450 it seems like

[28:52]it shouldn't be over 100 bucks per person in the band you know what i mean like if you're seeing a

[28:57]trio it shouldn't be that expensive that's crazy they can charge that much so it's so that's going

[29:03]to be a thousand dollar show if you yeah so then there's a there was a pit there was a pit and then

[29:07]there was like seats right behind the pit so i don't know a couple sections back those are 880

[29:13]85 bucks first row uh seats right right off the pit are they gonna are they gonna sell out that

[29:19]with those ticket prices you think oh yeah that's what's the deal are they releasing new music or

[29:23]they're just playing they got a new album coming out but what's the title like like uh i don't know

[29:29]their new song was like energize or something like yeah but they have the best album titles

[29:33]oh ever i mean they have enema of the state with that uh that uh adult film actress with the glove

[29:40]on and then they also have of course my favorite take off your pants

[29:42]jacket i know i was watching the padres dodgers game last night and then i was having a conversation

[29:48]with a couple of our listeners about this because they came back from commercial as top the eighth

[29:52]padres had gone up five to three it was such a party in the stadium it was pouring rain

[29:56]and the whole stadium was singing all the small things from blink 182 and i was like man that was

[30:01]such a moment and then uh this friend of mine pointed out to me that perhaps that was like a

[30:05]marketing plant i was like oh this sucks i feel i feel duped they sing that exact same song and so

[30:12]i was like oh my god i can't believe they're going to be doing that at some other stadium did they do

[30:14]that during the nhl playoffs like probably i don't know you guys know i actually did see the same

[30:18]tickets and you know you guys don't know this but i actually called matt and i was like hey would you

[30:22]buy these tickets for me and he said well how much are they and i said 488 dollars and that's about

[30:27]that time that man hung up nobody likes you when you're 43 yeah that's exactly it oh my god that is

[30:42]what would you be willing to pay to go to see blink 182 no it's gonna be like it's gonna be a game time

[30:47]no i mean it's a game time decision right like if if i could get like first row right there and it's

[30:54]the day of and sarah's excited to go i'm excited to go i mean what the hell when how many how many

[30:59]more times you're gonna see blink 182 play together because tom delong will go find aliens somewhere

[31:04]else and turn crazy again and they'll break up but you know but so there's probably something that'll

[31:10]be in the upper uh

[31:12]sections of the lower level you know that would be resold at a decent price the day of so it'll

[31:18]it'll just be a game time decision i know russ you want one of those t-shirts that they have at the

[31:22]concert but that just seems like it's too much i'd pay no more than 182 dollars for a blink

[31:28]i wouldn't blink at that price oh god oh my god is this the podcast though

[31:35]disaster i love how rob's eight minute bid on bleaching assholes was a great set is this

[31:42]the podcast it's when we discuss the price of concert tickets i give you guys a chance i made

[31:46]my beekeeper joke with aaron's wife and nobody bid on that so i was like well it's one of these

[31:50]shows and i had to step it right back up again i tried one clean joke forget it back into the

[31:55]gutter man is there a band where you would pay uh 880 to be down in the pit to see uh again pit

[32:04]if i knew i was on the front row front rail maybe but like the pit that just has zero

[32:12]desire to go sit in a pit anymore and watch a concert like i'll sit on i'll i'll be up a little

[32:17]bit where you can see and like you know i just want to i just want to watch i don't want to be

[32:20]an active participant can i ask a question that we might need to delete yeah so matt would you go

[32:27]i do bleach my ass 48 if it was just yourself or are you hesitant to pay 880 for two people

[32:33]no no i mean to sarah's point we can fly somewhere for 448 bucks probably right and go

[32:42]it's not about the money but it is about the money but it's not about the money i don't know

[32:46]it just feels like you're gonna be able to get something a little bit better for not 448 bucks

[32:51]or at least you know see what's going on on may 4th that's the other thing at this time in my life

[32:57]like what what the who knows we might be up at the cabin on may 4th and who cares about blink 182 at

[33:02]that point i know i don't know we might be trying to record a double episode yeah yeah oh check my

[33:07]schedule check our schedule oh guys i gotta go to the concert sorry i think one of the things with

[33:11]blink 182 though is that i would know about six of their songs and the other six i would not know

[33:18]and as soon as the song came on that i didn't know and i i would then think about how i paid

[33:22]a thousand dollars for my date and i had to go to this concert and i could be there listening

[33:26]i could have headphones and listening to some music aaron listens to i would go ape shit to

[33:31]hear damn it in person like if they like as soon as that guitar drops i would absolutely lose my

[33:36]mind i'd be like this was worth 880 dollars here's what russell here's where i would pay i would pay

[33:41]if they were at like a first app or something that was a little bit more intimate right than

[33:46]just a like a arena show that's right that's where i'd start paying some big money to be

[33:51]you know a little bit more of an into somebody's all you know i think pearl jam just played at

[33:56]house of blues or somewhere in new york that they play i think rob they played at a smaller venue in

[34:00]new york and there's only like 4 000 tickets and you know that's something where i'd pay to go if

[34:05]you could see that but sometimes the arena shows you know if you're not in the right spot man they're

[34:10]just bad just bad just bad just bad

[34:11]just hardly hear anything mad that leads into my role and go on so i'm gonna i'm gonna jump in here

[34:16]interrupt mine i took my uh two girls to see lizzo at madison square garden unlike harry styles with

[34:23]the oldest it was so good we were up in the uh up in the front row i got the front row of the

[34:29]balcony which is about what i could afford that's good was first of all we were sitting next to the

[34:32]people that were crazy lizzo fans and they just went nuts she would start a new song and they

[34:41]would be next to somebody who was going absolutely bananas and i think it really enhanced my

[34:45]daughter's concert experience and the people ahead of us never sat down which i absolutely

[34:50]love because then i could stand up the whole time and i didn't have to think like oh am i doing the

[34:54]right thing am i you know it's that classic dumb like midwesterner stress that i have thinking

[34:59]about other people which is the worst the best part though was at the end uh lizzo got done and

[35:07]walked off the stage and i realized that my youngest had never ever seen an encore

[35:11]oh so she was cheering and going nuts and we were singing and and she turned to me she goes oh she

[35:16]didn't sing a couple of her big songs but that was really fun and i said yep and then all of a sudden

[35:20]it was a real quick it was a real quick pull but lizzo came back out and she went bananas and i was

[35:25]thinking to myself like how wonderful that'd be to see an encore for the first time ever in your

[35:30]life and just be blown away by that right like that'd be awesome of like i cheered loud enough

[35:35]and she came she loves us and she came back out you know not knowing now that it's like just part

[35:41]and kind of a strange part of that i was gonna ask if you've ever been to a show where you expected

[35:45]an encore and people didn't cheer enough for the band just left the stage and stayed gone no i don't

[35:50]know if i've ever been to a full music concert that's small enough for the band would make that

[35:53]choice i think normally they've got like all their fireworks planned out and all the screen

[35:58]stuff planned out i go to only big shows so they're always but the encores there feel so

[36:02]fake because they'll go down and then like 10 seconds later they're back up i'm like i want

[36:06]an encore where it's like 10 minutes and you're like making a chair for it yeah you're making us

[36:11]beg like sick dogs get down on all fours and drink out of this bowl like that's what i want the band

[36:15]to say to me and i want to give it to them big time it was just because my my my concert experience

[36:22]going experience is completely different now because i will know every song i'll know what

[36:27]time they go on yeah you know they'll be on at 904 exactly you know or they'll be on between 90

[36:33]nine o'clock and 9 10 and i know i'll know that they're playing 23 songs and i'll know after the

[36:40]break and after the 23rd song about for a break and so they'll have two encores so stick around

[36:45]for two encores you know kind of a thing and so which i like because then if i don't know songs

[36:50]to your point rob about going to a concert where you don't know songs particularly if it's a band

[36:55]that i'm not all that big on i'll be like oh these are the ones they're playing i'll at least listen

[36:59]to these ones so i i know but that's that's like my oldest my oldest loves to do that she'll get

[37:03]the whole set list she'll look at it she'll watch she'll know what's going on the concert

[37:06]because she'll watch instagram videos of previous concerts yeah and i just never

[37:10]never i never want to see the set list i never want to know what they're playing i'm always

[37:14]disappointed when i do that i like to not i like to be hit by the new song it's it's something i

[37:19]enjoy my question is this at the end of the concert what do you do with your garbage right

[37:25]i've got drink i've got cartons we're trying to get out of madison square garden i told the girls

[37:29]just leave it at the seat i is that bad is that because i used to do that in movie theaters too

[37:35]and now i don't i take all my garbage out throw it away because i realize there's people that work

[37:38]there which i know is true at the concert

[37:40]place too but it just feels different i think a stadium a stadium is different than a movie

[37:45]theater right like in a stadium you can throw those shells on on the floor and then that's an

[37:51]acceptable practice right right yeah right but like you can't throw stuff on you can't throw

[37:56]stuff on the floor at the movie theater that's not right i yeah stadiums leave it i mean if you

[38:02]can right if like it's not hard to just pick it up and throw it if you know a trash can's right

[38:07]there or something great but no i leave my

[38:10]at stadium and then absolutely 100 pick up everything in a movie theater throw it away

[38:16]but it's still people like what's the difference it it shouldn't make a difference right it's crazy

[38:20]so anyway that is my uh the girls uh my youngest's first concert was lizzo good times

[38:26]that's a pretty good time to live up to that one isn't it you can't think they might be giants next

[38:31]but i don't know there's something about seeing it in a small venue i think it's not it doesn't

[38:35]even feel like the same activity you know what i mean right it's like when you uh

[38:40]sleep with a prostitute like they're just so good because they're professionals you're like well i

[38:43]can never go back to just amateurs you know what i mean yeah amateur threesomes yeah i mean a

[38:50]puka tan lines maybe if this if you see all the same movies over and over you start searching

[38:53]tan lines because you know it's going to give you the same results but different movies or whatever

[38:57]it it took it took me like seven years to get back to online dating after my run with prostitutes a

[39:02]while back like it was not an easy transition hey this is slightly cheaper uh russell how's it going

[39:10]rolling going things are going good i was actually in las vegas this last week and i was going to ask

[39:15]you guys what do you think is the ideal amount of time to go on a vegas trip two nights two nights

[39:21]two nights yeah no that third night is horrible and i don't how long were you there russell

[39:27]i was there for not one not two not three not four not five oh my god i was there for six days

[39:35]six full days and five nights in las vegas my goodness what oh my god

[39:39]are you serious how are you still alive yeah how'd you do it i'm barely surviving right now

[39:44]oh my god that sounds terrible did you take like one night off or you're like hey i gotta i just

[39:49]gotta go to my room at nine and just kick back and watch american pickers or something there was

[39:54]there was a couple work nights when one night i did go out at like a fancy dinner with some work

[39:58]industry colleagues but i did make sure to go back and was in bed by i think 11 or so on one

[40:04]of the first nights so there was one night that i did play it pretty calm jesus but what was the

[40:09]other nights well what's a standard night on a six night trip for work out there well what i what

[40:15]i thought i could do is i've got three categories of stuff we could talk about we could talk food

[40:19]we could talk arts and entertainment or we could talk vegas experience what do you guys want to

[40:25]start with why were you putting entertainment quotation air quotes well you gotta let me know

[40:30]what you want to hear about it i think i think all three of those could apply to sex workers

[40:35]so i'm kind of into any of these stories i want to hear the vegas experience so that's the one

[40:39]that's the one that really tickles my toes so this this is not shows this is just interactions

[40:45]with people where i'm like this only happens in vegas right so actually this the first one doesn't

[40:51]happen only in vegas but i just wanted to get your guys thoughts on this uh one of the restaurants i

[40:55]went to one night is morimoto it's the guy the iron chef i don't know if you guys watch iron

[40:59]chef at all but japanese restaurant really good and immediately i'm there with a foodie a foodie

[41:04]if you will and we're waiting and there's this group next to us and immediately there you can

[41:09]there's a lady in the group that is the really really loud lady like screaming squealing at

[41:14]everything laughing super loud what are your guys thoughts on dealing with the super loud person in

[41:19]the group next to you sometimes i just in the group next to you okay i'm not familiar with that

[41:25]in the group next to you rob yeah i just had it with that guy you know i was talking to the pizza

[41:29]place who was talking about you got to go to the wedding don't you know skip the dinner with her

[41:34]it drives me bonkers and i can't and sarah knows this about me and tries to help me out with

[41:39]my affliction but i can't concentrate on two things like if i'm driving in the car

[41:43]and there's four of us in the car and they're talking somebody answers their phone

[41:46]and they're talking like i can't i just i have to not talk to anybody because i can't

[41:50]so if there's a loud person it just all i do is hear that person and what they're talking

[41:56]and it absolutely ruins it for me i can't stand it i want i one thousand percent get that it's

[42:03]when you hear a conversation going on another table it is the most engaging thing

[42:09]you cannot not listen to it you need it even if they're just saying the dumbest shit and then

[42:13]you can't not listen and then you get annoyed when you start listening it's a disaster

[42:16]yeah i can't tune it out no i i but i will guess in terms of dealing with it i'm going to guess

[42:22]that my method of dealing with it might be different than the foodies method that you're

[42:27]with but my method would probably be to be quiet and just listen to whatever's going on at that

[42:32]table and maybe get out of there quickly and go somewhere else i have to tell you guys my wife is

[42:38]is a loud talker my daughter and i often will look at each other and my daughter has started

[42:43]just telling her you are talking very loud the problem is anytime you tell her that she's being

[42:47]loud she gets very mad at you very very very mad at you in fact and so sometimes it's easier

[42:54]sometimes maybe those other people in the group are actually held hostage because there's nothing

[42:59]they can do they're at the loud person's mercy and they have to sit there they know they're being

[43:04]loud they cannot they cannot do anything about it they have to just eat it okay it's like it's

[43:08]like if somebody handed you a gun and said hey come to this bank with me and then they brought

[43:11]the place you're like well i'm i'm not really part of this but i am part of it now so i might

[43:16]as well go along with it i don't know but anyways so we got through the loud lady it wasn't that big

[43:20]of a deal but we did have another experience we were at a bar you guys know one of my favorite

[43:24]places to go in vegas just for one drink is margaritaville we had uh one of our first vegas

[43:30]trips ever uh matt and aaron instead of gambling with us at margaritaville decided to get day drunk

[43:38]and so every year i love good drinks i love to go get one drink at margaritaville just to relive

[43:49]the glory days and so i was there uh with a margarita drinker and so we're sitting there

[43:54]at the bar and this guy comes in over down the down a few people from us at the bar

[43:59]and he walks up and he starts complaining he orders like a margarita to go

[44:04]starts complaining to the bartender tells him you are making this wrong

[44:08]i came here yesterday and the other bartender made it differently with like fresh lime juice

[44:13]instead of a lime or something and so he starts yelling at the bartender and everyone starts

[44:19]staring and he brings the other bartender out he goes sir we have never ever made it the way

[44:24]you're describing and he was yelling at them and the whole time we're thinking how in the

[44:28]fuck do you go into a bar called margaritaville yeah and tell them they're making

[44:33]what do you guys think of that that's such an alpha move

[44:38]that would literally be like if i said to my wife i was like listen

[44:41]your anus is so brown it's crazy we gotta fix this you know what i mean like it's doing what

[44:48]it's supposed to do it's fine like it's actually great at the only thing it's supposed to do like

[44:53]it's doing a great job you cannot how can you bring harsh vibes into margaritaville what a

[44:58]bummer just after like after like a five minute argument the guy finally leaves and the bartender

[45:03]just shakes his head and walks over and i say excuse me but can you put some fresh weed in

[45:08]my drink what a good bet i thought when you said that he that he uh shook his head that you were

[45:15]going to say oh no i want that head stirred oh i don't know god i i should have bailed way earlier

[45:22]i did have you guys know we like to gamble i also had a fun interaction with a dealer you

[45:28]guys know i think like a dealer at a blackjack table is so much part of the fun if you have a

[45:32]good dealer that's interacting with you having fun with people you know switching up the pace

[45:37]at which they deal it's so much more fun and how you interact with that dealer can make or break

[45:42]your time there and the only guarantee is once you find somebody you really like somebody like

[45:46]that margaritaville guy is going to come sit next to you who both is loud and argues with people

[45:51]well there was some guy who came and sat next to me and this was the type of guy who orders a vodka

[45:55]cranberries so initially like he orders and he was kind of a dick a little bit and at one point

[46:02]he ordered another one and the dealer loudly says vodka cranberry going out

[46:07]i just stared right at the guy it was hilarious the dealer immediately won my points

[46:12]the vodka cranberry is a drink that is like it is like in a time machine from like 2005 right like

[46:20]it's just like that was the year everybody got gray goose and cranberry and then we just all

[46:24]agreed to never do that again then jokes on russell that poor guy had a uti he's just trying

[46:29]to self-medicate yeah i love i love vodka and it burns when i pee what can i do about this

[46:37]but there there was one other crazy thing this was actually having too many vegas experiences

[46:41]with some of these professionals out here and he's a vodka cranberries so i was actually getting an

[46:47]uber home this was after my sixth day so at this point i am exhausted like you need to get out of

[46:52]vegas you guys know it's time to go you need to go and it's not a quick flight home either i mean

[46:57]you know and it's a longer flight home too and you're like god damn just get home well i'll tell

[47:02]you what matt it's even a longer uber ride when your uber driver gets in a fight with someone in

[47:06]front of you and you have

[47:07]to order a second uber so going down wait a minute wait a minute so what i'm picturing is

[47:14]the uber driver fighting you sitting in there for about oh two and a half minutes or so and

[47:19]you're trying to decide what do i do minneapolis airport this happened this is not a minneapolis

[47:23]this is vegas these are vegas stories man vegas yeah this is a vegas experience man

[47:28]if it was just at the minneapolis airport we would do it be doing a flight tonight segment

[47:32]but so getting there we're leaving in the hotel we go down

[47:37]stairs and we're getting an uber and we're waiting for it and the guy comes pulling up we start going

[47:41]over and walk over he slams on the brakes and we're he opens the thing put our backs in the

[47:47]back you know suitcases in the back stuff in the car the traveler i'm with jumps in the car and

[47:52]sits down and the car pulls up behind him and they he starts yelling at our driver saying you don't

[47:57]know how to fucking drive starts yelling at our driver starts screaming at him back they start

[48:01]screaming at each other for like two to three minutes and both of them are out of the car now

[48:07]like in each other's faces it's it's a fight so at this point i just i'm like i'm out of this we're

[48:13]done i'm not doing this stuff so i grab our bags pull them out and i said get out of the car we're

[48:17]not riding with this guy i'm not doing this shit so immediately my next move is to be like the

[48:23]biggest scared little cat in the world and say we're going to stand behind that pillar over there

[48:27]because we're not riding with this guy yeah and i don't want him to be accosting me about like

[48:31]canceling his uber because he's already like getting violent with the guy next to him you know

[48:37]it's just smart you i think what you should have done there russell is jump in on your guys's side

[48:42]i think once you get an uber driver you're ride or die you know what i mean you gotta back him up

[48:47]you should come in and punch the punch the guy like right in the chest like really hard to start

[48:51]i gotta be like wait what the fuck it's like you're my uber driver i love you man we're into

[48:55]this forever so all these people are watching it and i just wanted because he saw who i was he saw

[49:00]when we were putting our stuff in the in this right he knew who i was it's not like i could

[49:03]just cancel and walk away and plus you change your uber name to

[49:06]thick dick so that stuck out in his mind you can do that by the way you can change your name so

[49:13]when they pick you up they have to legally call you by that name he seemed to recognize me anyways

[49:16]because my old name was mount dickless and now i went to thick dick and he was like it's like oh

[49:21]did you take a trip take a trip to the desert while you're here in vegas

[49:26]one of those procedures mount dickless that sounds like the instructions never mind so anyways the

[49:32]person i'm with starts like talking to all these people around us and i'm just like can we just be

[49:36]honest i hope this guy like doesn't see us and avoids us so we can just so i i cancel pay the fee

[49:42]to cancel order another one it's his goddamn car picks it up again what how's this possible i don't

[49:50]know i don't know time to get out the fake mustache oh hola senor oh no i'm a pile of

[49:57]shit too yeah you'll soy dickless mountain too so eventually i cancel again and he drives up

[50:03]and he gets out and he starts walking towards me he's like hey we gotta go i'm ready to go and

[50:06]everything's going to be okay and i'm like oh my god i'm going to be okay and i'm like oh my god

[50:06]not happening dude i'm like i'm not down with this you do your thing i'm not riding with you

[50:11]and he's like no but you know i i took your thing i'm like not doing it if you're gonna argue with

[50:16]people like that i'm not riding so i'm just like hey man i understand it you got your thing with

[50:20]that dude it's all you you do your thing not happening so eventually he just left and didn't

[50:24]give me any more grief on it i love the idea of you arguing with this guy about why it's bad to

[50:29]argue that's my argument i just said i was choosing not to ride with him so what would you

[50:36]by that forever he's like well you're arguing you're like oh my god this guy so what would you

[50:40]guys have done if you were getting in an uber and they got in a fight and i think it was physical

[50:44]at one point there was like hitting and pushing and stuff what would you guys have done in that

[50:48]situation got in that car and got to the airport as fast as possible i'm sitting around another

[50:54]half hour waiting for another guy it's not that part of the airport i guarantee if you took all

[50:59]your clothes off and went out there and talked to them they would stop fighting and they would

[51:03]pay attention to you and you would get whatever you want i think that's always been my strength

[51:06]strategy ever since i was growing up i've never been in a fight in my life but if i was

[51:09]the first thing i would do is take off my pants because if somebody's gonna fight if somebody's

[51:15]gonna fight me without my pants on i deserve whatever is coming if they still fight me i

[51:21]deserve whatever's coming my way you gotta take your shirt off so they can't grab no no no hold

[51:24]you close no shirt everybody takes their shirt off fighting so they're gonna think that's normal

[51:28]but when you're taking off your pants they're gonna be like wait a minute are you wearing

[51:32]underwear or no no i'm naked i'm nude is your asshole bleached or no

[51:36]no not at all the opposite i take the i take the scrapings from the bleach place

[51:41]so if you're nude though and somebody's like you know what i'm still gonna kick this guy's ass you

[51:48]really deserve it you know because just think about fighting a nude guy not good not great

[51:53]can you imagine getting all scuffed up if they like double leg took down you on the on like the

[51:58]cement floor i mean plus you'd just be so imagine throwing the scrapings in their face that you've

[52:04]saved for some reason

[52:05]i don't know i don't know i don't know

[52:06]so what do you guys do when you see like a dispute between people do you try because like part of me

[52:15]thought well maybe i should get in and break it up maybe i should what do you do like i'm at the

[52:19]point in life where i know internally the way i think i can be like a real antagonist and a real

[52:24]asshole when i want to be but i just i don't want that in my life i don't want to be arguing with

[52:29]people i don't want i'm just like i'm just walking away and leaving it alone what would you guys have

[52:32]done 100 walk away nervously there's i mean that's i would have yeah

[52:36]i would have slunk away and then just been like well i guess i live in vegas now because i can

[52:40]never leave like i i can never call a car again on the off chance it's going to be the same guy

[52:44]no man driving is hard like matt talked about you know trying to drive while distracted rob knows

[52:50]how tough it is to drive when you're amped up emotionally yeah like you can't get in the car

[52:54]with this guy after a big fight like he might just he might be like ready to do it to drive

[52:58]really fast you made the right choice man that's that's true you know i was biking down uh the the

[53:03]west side highway or the west side whatever it is manhattan and i was like oh my god i'm gonna be

[53:06]and two bike riders had crashed into each other and were punching each other in the middle of the

[53:11]bike lane and two guys had stepped in to break them up like two other bike riders and i was like

[53:17]you know those two guys who are breaking them up are really the real heroes like i would never do

[53:20]that in a million years because exactly what i did is i went wide to continue my bike ride without

[53:25]even slowing down at all i went right around them like their problems aren't yours rob their problems

[53:30]aren't yours they're only going to hold you up that's true i will in three minutes yeah yeah

[53:34]plus i was like am i going to take off my oh

[53:36]okay i'll picture this i'm naked except for a bike helmet smoke what what was it russell picture

[53:42]this time if you will a picture i'm naked except for this helmets and then i i'm wearing a helmet

[53:52]and i'm naked i mean that's ironic that's like safe safe and sorry if you were liam neeson riding

[53:58]that bike you could get caught in the chain or something he can't ride a bike he can't do any

[54:03]physical when he's naked i mean if he gets hard he passes out he can't do any physical when he's

[54:06]he has to be lying down there's so much blood going and i'm going to share i'll save my uh my

[54:11]food and arts and entertainment experiences for future episodes that is experience i how did you

[54:16]not just die six days there that'd be like that's like that's like a hundred years earth years like

[54:21]that's crazy you've aged a decade something might have affected guys let me we don't have time to

[54:27]talk about russell's time in vegas all the time russell's like oh yeah i forgot about one category

[54:33]visit me visiting the cat house it's like well

[54:36]i would have picked that one rob i will give you a preview for next week's episode

[54:40]i may or may not have gone to a show called fantasy

[54:43]that uh is that the one with the brooms where they sweep the things you think it's going to

[54:52]be like topless ladies and instead it's just fantasia and you're like wow this is

[54:55]it's not even erotic

[54:57]you'll never guess what all the little brooms are in erotic fantasia they're butt plugs all

[55:06]right so about the album listen we are talking about disintegration by the cure

[55:10]this is really that's too much this this this the scrapings this uh this is their uh

[55:19]this is like their fifth or seventh album or something like that but it's really their first

[55:23]commercial success i don't know guys i did these last week i thought we were doing double

[55:27]eighth studio album so yeah definitely not their six it's either their fifth or seventh

[55:32]definitely not the six this is a band who made music

[55:36]so i did these notes i did these notes a week ago so they're not that fresh in my head there's no

[55:40]other reason why i'm not doing this very well listen but this is really their most this is

[55:45]really their most successful album it's their big first commercial success and i think really to

[55:50]understand commercial success i can't remember first well i not their second to understand the

[55:56]cure i want to just play you a couple cure songs from earlier albums so you can kind of i think

[55:59]this is the best way to track their trajectory off their first album three imaginary boys but

[56:04]not really this is one of those things where they're like oh i don't know i don't know i don't

[56:06]they release it as a single in the uk and then they tacked it on on the album in the u.s this of

[56:10]course is boys don't cry oh right and the thing is this this is a them being produced by a real

[56:17]pop producer they robert smith barely had any control over this album he didn't get to produce

[56:22]it he didn't get to make it sound the way he wanted but but the album wasn't success

[56:26]so what ended up happening is that uh this is off 17 seconds in 1980 so a year later

[56:32]this is when robert smith is in control now see if you can tell

[56:35]a difference between the two albums they're in control now see if you can tell a difference in

[56:36]this is called a forest

[56:37]and i saw this described as gothic rock or a term i love which was bloomscapes

[56:49]so instead of like sound the sound and they kind of muddied the sound up a little bit yeah it sounds

[56:54]like you're playing from further away or something and it's a much different sound overall and then

[57:02]robert smith everybody was calling them a goth band so robert smith of course did the very normal

[57:06]thing of getting mad at them and saying no i can write a vapid pop song just like anybody else like

[57:10]this

[57:11]this is a love song what is this listen for the cure this is like super pop

[57:22]you can tell you can hear the what was that band we did that

[57:28]london burning the clash i mean there's a lot of clash there's less gone here

[57:33]or it's like i feel like every

[57:35]every british band does like that one mccartney tune it's just like every everybody listened to

[57:40]when i'm 64 enough times they're like well we got to do the little dance it can't be one

[57:43]i i and so then in 87 he he does just like heaven so now he's going like oh this rocks

[57:51]this is such a good song yes this is their first top 40 hit in the u.s in 87 so this is

[57:58]eight years after they start but you can still hear it's poppy it's hooky it's like

[58:02]it's his voice

[58:05]so good to me so then they come out with disintegration and this is robert smith in

[58:13]full control full robert smith mode this gets he wanted to get away from the pop song it's like

[58:20]when robert smith was running the wildcat for the vikings he was in control did they do that i want

[58:25]to be no no that wasn't even invented then those are those this is back in the day where everyone

[58:30]had just had huge shoulder pads don quarterbacks had huge shoulder pads everyone had huge shoulder

[58:33]pads i feel like they might have run a direct snap to mo williams once or twice

[58:36]direct snap to uh help me out russell who am i thinking of

[58:41]straight to the wizard yeah oh no i'm sorry and again sorry to all of our fans who are

[58:49]not they used to pass the drug test they fake dong so i think about it every day this though

[58:53]uh disintegration he wants to get away from the pop song and it's really robert smith combining

[58:58]two things that i think happens to all of us number one he was super bummed because he was turning

[59:02]to the pop song and it's really robert smith combining two things that i think happens to all

[59:03]30 30 so he had been in a band for 10 years and he's like oh no i'm gonna be 30 i was like i when

[59:10]i read that i got so mad i was like what the fuck he got mad at 30 it's like oh i don't have a single

[59:18]gray pubic hair fuck off you know what i mean i don't need to hear that it's so stupid it's like

[59:25]oh i don't think my life is a drudgery yet anyway so then their first i mean that so his first album

[59:33]he uh he also is using he says you know what i know i'm depressed so i'm going to take some

[59:38]medicine i'm going to take this medicine i have called lsd so he's not he was a heavy lsd user at

[59:43]this time he's depressed about turning 30 and so this album was basically that response and so

[59:49]you're going to hear this very kind of surreal hypnotic album that could not be more different

[59:56]than the strokes if we tried it instead of two minute and 30 second songs we have 20 minute and

[60:01]30 second songs and this is started off we have plain song

[60:05]he's an awesome starter i mean lsd is like an accepted treatment for depression though

[60:13]yeah i love this this how this starts up i'm sure robert smith was in a double blind study

[60:18]i guarantee it what do you guys like about the chimes or what what's the start for you guys

[60:24]right when it kicks in getting you know exactly what sound you're getting out of this album it

[60:30]from it sets

[60:31]tone and when you're sitting there listening on headphones it's like makes anything you're

[60:37]doing seem like magical and far out like i was like entering grades into a grade book and i was

[60:41]like wow it does have a superman-esque kind of like a movie i'm with you yeah cinematic yeah

[60:48]it reminds me so much of the opening scene of top gun just that sound and that feeling that i'm just

[60:53]like talk to me goose that's called top gun anthem okay all right all right should be our national

[61:01]agree it should be should be you know throughout this whole album i can hear that he's making this

[61:07]for a big rock stadiums it feels like he's made it's not made for the studio it's not made for

[61:14]little venues like you hear the and it might be some of the echo they do what they're singing but

[61:20]i mean these songs are awesome live i can only there's a couple of um

[61:25]just chills right just let it go

[61:31]that's the thing i've really enjoyed about wearing an n95 is i can pull my n95 off to the

[61:37]side and pretend like a maverick and be like talk to the goose like that's my favorite thing about

[61:41]wearing a mask pull your mask to your side and pretend you're goose jesus what a lot of people

[61:48]died from covid here okay so now we're all just watching i nailed it i got that correct you got it

[61:58]and really we should be doing a video breakdown because

[62:01]this video is wild there's a guy playing a guitar in a hangar but i just want to say this should be

[62:06]our national anthem like if people came out to this at the olympics every other country would

[62:12]know that we're not fucking around okay especially if they're in unnamed rogue states okay that maybe

[62:18]wouldn't offend countries that buy movie tickets or especially or especially like in that movie the

[62:24]new basketball documentary the redeemed team where they act like it's super impressive that

[62:28]the 12 greatest basketball players in the world beat the world with a n95 and they're like oh my

[62:31]god they're gonna beat the world down spain or some team that became a team that has like one

[62:34]nba player that would be a great song who who who made that documentary who is the producers on that

[62:41]what what studio did that come out of i don't know it might be the top two or three greatest

[62:45]players in basketball history that might be their collaboration yeah it wasn't like luke longley he

[62:51]was like trying to think of one other international player and i cannot do it

[62:56]luke longley jesus christ but i mean that's

[63:01]that should be the name i would you know what i would not take a knee during that song okay

[63:07]would you take your hat off finally during that song never i never will because i'm always saluting

[63:13]because i'm in my navy whites what about hand on heart during that song rob i do yes the hand on

[63:18]heart what was the rule the hand on heart is if you're like a boy scout right what's the i don't

[63:23]know i was always told it's like very if your hand on his hands other places please edit that out

[63:29]sorry i'm sorry what

[63:31]i'm sorry

[63:32]oh god i wish i had this wait i have to reopen this

[63:38]okay that's what i call aaron tell that story about boy scouts getting molested again

[63:42]i mean it makes you realize how great america is because you realize how good this song is

[63:50]because you're kind of like yeah that's badass so is this a dumb question is this song this is

[63:57]not a normal song this was made just for the movie i think so just to score for the

[64:01]movie i think so or it's so good they named the movie after the song

[64:04]i do see you got whatever the whatever this algorithm is as lana del rey is the

[64:12]next song up for you see fully i'm telling you and then for some reason it's marty mcfly saying

[64:18]yeah your kids are gonna love this just like this podcast it's it's for the future

[64:23]it's really it's really for the future god damn so good uh pictures of

[64:31]you

[64:31]top 100 song of all time so this is the one

[64:37]over and over and over again matt texted us there's a top 100 song on this album and i was

[64:48]i was like oh i'm so excited i had made a guess for prayers for rain here the second half of the

[64:54]album i'll repeat it to you when it comes up man i was trying to guess what you were gonna pick

[64:58]i thought for sure it was love song what what

[65:01]this one apart for you admittedly i like this album but i don't love it i i would have never

[65:05]picked this song as one of my hundreds so what you know it's maybe you know this if you really

[65:11]look into the lyrics and i really haven't but the thought of pictures of you and then just this like

[65:16]slow deep guitar is dragged out i don't know i mean it just it feels like kind of an alternative

[65:24]song i guess and so that's probably why i like it it's such a beautiful song he came up with

[65:29]that song after he went through a house fire

[65:31]and he found a picture of his uh old pictures you know sitting around and so you know i've said that

[65:36]before of like what are we going to do with all of our pictures and so i and we've talked about

[65:41]this like i have just so many digital pictures of dumb shit like what what is anybody going to

[65:44]do with that so look what i did guys i went out right after we recorded that episode

[65:47]just a warning i think i told you to delete this whole conversation

[65:52]today in our car so well whatever i want to leave that in but i got a digital picture frame that

[65:58]just sits in the living room yeah it's hooked up to my google albums and so any picture i take just

[66:05]gets added onto the picture frames now i did have to think real hard about pictures i've taken

[66:09]recently maybe like texted you guys and whether i want a picture of that showing in my living room

[66:13]so there's gonna have to be some editing pictures from the memphis zoo way back yeah i don't know

[66:18]how long how long would it take your family to say something if every picture was of you

[66:21]oh i can i just tell you this i bought this picture frame i put it in the living room today

[66:27]jenny was in here all day she never noticed it or commented on it they literally a picture frame

[66:34]that is showing different pictures of the family from years and years and years got zero comments

[66:39]from her because she just did not see it oh sarah's dad had an apple tv and then you know

[66:45]he had an apple laptop so all of his pictures were on his laptop and that dude loved collating

[66:53]putting together adding new pictures taking ones out finding ones scanning them in

[66:57]you know

[66:57]and creating a slideshow then having it at like the cabin it would just be going

[67:01]non-stop in the background that's beautiful and you know it was cool because you got some old ones

[67:06]some new ones some young some old it was good it's great until you remember that when you're

[67:10]younger with a digital camera you thought a very funny prank was uh kicking open the bathroom door

[67:15]and taking a picture of your wife going to the bathroom and so your google photos now has

[67:19]literally dozens of pictures of your wife scared on the toilet looking toward the door as you take

[67:25]a picture and you don't know whether you should delete the picture or not you don't know whether

[67:27]you should delete them because you maybe both pass away simultaneously hold on hold on hold on

[67:32]hold on now you you remember the seinfeld episode right where kramer was gonna create that

[67:38]coffee table book of like dogs taking a shit or whatever like all you've got you've got a coffee

[67:45]book table right there wife on the toilet to her for all your family and her friend bernie i'm sure

[67:51]bernie would like that for a christmas present i should be clear they're tasteful photos oh okay

[67:57]they are tasteful and i could put them in black and white bathroom shots yeah they are but she is

[68:01]terrified in each one because i have just kicked down the door and i have a camera in my hand so

[68:05]so we've talked about switching lives with people erin would that would this be acceptable behavior

[68:09]out in your your uh home that one would not fly

[68:12]well it's kind of the perfect prank too because they can't do anything about it they can't

[68:21]chase you around because they paid 75 bucks for a bleaching they can't just ruin it did you have

[68:27]like the

[68:27]quick click thing on so she could like hide the food she brought in there and the behind them in

[68:31]the kitchen or the little bathroom in the what's that called the bathroom fridge that would be the

[68:36]worst one it's like the one refrigerator the one day i heated up a chili dog right when i have to

[68:41]go to the bathroom is when my wife kicks in the door and takes a picture of me eating a chili

[68:45]dog on the toilet i'd have to explain no this is not a normal thing you know it's like like

[68:53]every 1100 pictures in your family photo that pops up and you just gotta hope it's with no

[68:57]one's there it's so hard to eat on the go too because if you wait if you just have the little

[69:01]paper tray kind of thing and then there's chili you're gonna end up with it no everywhere that's

[69:06]not a good bathroom snack well but yeah i mean it's i don't know shower afterwards yeah you could

[69:11]also take off your shirt yeah you could be dude eating a chili dog which sounds really good

[69:15]actually okay sucking on chili dogs i'm a toilet uh closed down so you can tell like this album is

[69:27]soundscapes yeah and honestly all these songs i picked where to start just by where the lyrics

[69:34]start because it's when the beat kind of drops in these i think i started to wonder if it's a

[69:40]concept album like it seems like some themes come back and it does feel cinematic i don't know if

[69:44]that's just how it was definitely written as one piece right but i don't know if there's a story

[69:48]that knits the album together is there well part of this song i know robin mentioned that getting

[69:52]old and kind of having that moment of feeling old and i think he said uh this was the song

[69:57]that where he felt like i'm running out of his time he reached 30 years old he hadn't had his

[70:00]big hit yet and so i thought we could maybe do a list celebrating the greatest songs ever about

[70:06]getting old oh this is my nightmare russell this really is

[70:12]one song that didn't make the list was old man dries balls off in a in a public gym hair dryer

[70:22]did not make the list see but that's not even it like that's the point that i want to get to

[70:26]where i've just

[70:27]accepted that i'm old and fuck everyone else i'm drying my balls on the i'm turning the hair dryer

[70:31]upside down and you know what's coming next we're playing the one-man parachute game

[70:35]all right first song on the list is from 1985 we covered this band once before we didn't cover the

[70:40]song it is fleetwood mac landslide oh of course

[70:46]this is a banger can i tell you when they released their uh unplugged special was this song

[70:56]it was when i thought about getting older too because they looked old as hell when they were

[71:01]playing the song it was crazy how old they looked at that video of them singing this

[71:04]so this is about like reflecting on you know your life changing where it's been how it's

[71:09]maybe falling apart do you guys ever reflect on how your life has changed what what do you

[71:13]what do you think about reflect about how it's falling apart all the time

[71:16]yeah i think about it all the time i mean i well we just released an episode that we recorded two

[71:23]years ago you think about where we've come as a group in two years think about that think about

[71:28]how long i've known you guys all the time the problem there's in rosie i'm gonna get you going

[71:34]here a little bit there's things when you have kids that you don't realize you've done them for

[71:39]the last time ever um yeah and that's it you know and that's that's the ones i think about a lot like

[71:46]you know i probably have read and i could go read uh dog man with leo right now but we read so many

[71:52]dog man and wimpy kid books and i think about that a lot i think about that a lot i think about that a lot

[71:53]books and all that you know now we're on to like lord of the rings and cool shit but yeah you know

[71:59]it'd be nice to go back and read one dog man book with leo things like that yeah but see now you get

[72:04]to do it the perfect time like like my nephew you know like i i put on a swimsuit and i go take a

[72:10]bath with him because that's what i did with my girls all the time i took baths with them that's

[72:13]just what we did and obviously now i can't do that anymore but with him i'm like hey i'm back

[72:19]i've got the alexa on playing music i'm taking a bath and then when i'm done i take the kid

[72:23]out i hand them to somebody else and i am done taking baths do not have to do it every day to

[72:28]kill three hours until bedtime like it's it's still you still have those great moments you

[72:33]just don't have to do them all the time like i liked reading to my girls at night but at the

[72:37]time it was like a prison i had to do it every night it was just hours of my life and i'd do

[72:41]anything to get that back but i cannot forget that it was also a prison and i got mad almost

[72:45]every night doing it before we get to the next song on the list i had to hit a couple of honorable

[72:49]mentions these are songs that cover the topic but we've already talked about

[72:53]so they can't be on the list um when i'm 64 or in my life by the beatles changes by david bowie

[72:59]neil young old man oh see i was waiting for that one that's the boy with the thorn and aside from

[73:04]the smiths we just did a couple weeks ago which talked about this theme springsteen's glory days

[73:08]and then someday by the strokes which we just talked about all those songs right are about

[73:13]getting older but none of them made the list okay okay well it's gonna be a good list of that's good

[73:17]to know yeah the next song on the list this is a is about celebrating one's grandma and

[73:22]kind of the importance that an older person provides in someone's life this is bill withers

[73:27]grandma's hands check this song out oh did you have the beginning wait jump to the end on this

[73:37]oh yeah sorry i forgot i was gonna show you gotta get that knowledge though yes right back

[73:42]you guys know this one yes

[73:43]it's all about everything grandma did in his life it's her arthritic hands soothed they scolded

[73:52]she brought pearls of wisdom to the guy's life so i was curious like as you're older like what

[73:57]are the things you're proud about that you're giving to the younger generation because it's

[74:00]not all bad getting old right there's good things too no diggity no doubt i think i think that it's

[74:07]i think like one thing i do is we just go out and do like we go to a like we're going to a drag show

[74:13]we went to muay thai like a couple weekends ago like we go out and do kind of these like borderline

[74:19]insane things that you don't know how to do like you don't know how to do anything you don't know

[74:22]how to do anything you don't normally do as a family and just really get that experience like

[74:25]i think that's that's like the number one thing i can pass down of like hey i like to i i am like

[74:31]going to do these weird things and it's okay you should do that too like i think that's something

[74:34]i'm passing down awesome how's that embracing fun it's great yeah i also think just kind of

[74:40]stressing about like what everybody thinks about you all the time and maybe if you do things that

[74:44]nobody likes it like you just or maybe you tell a joke and it doesn't land maybe you just think

[74:48]about that all night while you're going to bed i think i'm passing that down as well actually

[74:52]honestly i know there's a lot that i hope my son takes from watching my wife and i together i hope

[74:57]he sees that we love each other and care about each other i think also doing this podcast he's

[75:03]learning the importance of friendship i'm 42 years old my friends still make time to talk to

[75:07]me i make time to talk to them he knows it's what i go do when he goes to bed so i think i think

[75:11]it's that i hope he never listens to it but i think the fact that we're still doing it is is a

[75:15]good role model one thing he said he had referenced no diggity rob if you want to go jump to the

[75:21]song you guys will recognize this and let's see if you guys know where it's from or where we've

[75:26]heard it recently from this is the beginning of this song god this is just no diggity i mean this

[75:32]is yeah did you guys know this was the song sampled for no diggity before aaron had to you

[75:39]had to right yeah man you too so good yeah i also go to a website called grandma hands.com

[75:51]but i don't think that's the same i have a subscription there actually rob i did read

[75:58]one comment about that song was someone's hands you can tell a lot about how they work and how

[76:02]they love whoa wow my my wife's hand feels like the crypt keeper because she does so much she's

[76:09]got all these dead calluses so it's like being touched by a cheese grater oh god next song on

[76:16]the list is from 1989 we haven't done too much country music or garth brooks this is garth brooks

[76:21]uh much too young to feel this

[76:23]he's so talented not even the live one or anything i like this steel guitar

[76:44]and i'll tell you what garth brooks you want to talk about a cautionary tale of getting old

[76:48]i mean that guy looked old when he was like 22 like

[76:51]i was like wow this guy he looks younger now i think he looks younger now his head doesn't look

[76:57]so cut in those jeans i mean if you if you saw garth brooks at a pumpkin patch you would try

[77:01]to pick his head and take it home i mean it was huge i read that that song is about a rodeo rider

[77:08]who just can't keep up anymore and can't keep up with the younger guy so i was curious what

[77:12]are something i know we know rob is no longer a stand-up man he's a lay down guy but what are

[77:17]some things in life that as you guys have gotten older you can no longer do that you wish you could

[77:21]do i don't think i could break out into a sprint at any given time and survive 100 no like i run

[77:30]for the train but it's not a full-on sprint to the train like i think i tried that at the beginning

[77:34]of the pandemic i tried these home workouts and some of them would be like you know do six

[77:38]10 second sprints and forget it like sprinting absolutely young man's game no there's some

[77:44]muscle in my hamstring that was never there before that immediately gets pulled it's just like no

[77:50]you're never gonna you're never gonna

[77:51]do this again well that i mean like so the one thing in reffing is as the back judge i got to

[77:57]sprint all the time oh my god you still got it i still got i gotta beat that i gotta beat that

[78:02]receiver to the end zone you know as the back judge and so yeah i get to get out and sprint

[78:07]all the time so it's fun i think i would struggle big time to hit a baseball now which drives me

[78:14]bonkers that you know i i haven't tried in a while but i think i would struggle big time to

[78:21]myself well while you're still hitting bombs and winning titles and stuff honestly i still think i

[78:29]could hit a bomb anytime i wanted to like i have no reason to think i i am like a real pitcher was

[78:34]pitching at you though like oh yeah for sure i think i do stuff like that i'm like i bet i still

[78:38]got it with no i've never been able to baseball my whole life there's no evidence to the contrary

[78:43]i can't right now go downhill on a bike as fast as i could five years ago but i've noticed and

[78:51]but i have noticed there's this curve in riding with people around here is that the young guys

[78:56]will go down the hill super fast middle-aged guys sometimes slow down a bit and then the older a

[79:01]cyclist gets the faster they go downhill it's like don't give a shit anymore it's all about yeah what

[79:08]do you i mean you know you've got kids you got to be careful when you're younger you can carry less

[79:11]than when you're older you're like oh fuck gotta get the jollies going somehow around here if it's

[79:16]riding the bike downhill fast that's what it's gonna be yeah i've got love insurance my or life

[79:21]my loved ones will be fine if i'm sure here russell what's what's something you don't do

[79:26]anymore well you don't pick fights in the parking lot i don't pick fights you know what i i would

[79:30]you i would say five ten years ago i would have gotten in that argument with the two guys like

[79:34]lickety split because i i would have just i would have thrived off of that type of thing and i just

[79:38]don't i don't want that shit in my life anymore i'm a walk away i'm a walker i'm not talking on

[79:43]that thing love it next song on the list 1988 this is rod stewart i think rob talked about a

[79:51]did an elton john song rob and you wanted to play it at your wedding yeah your song

[79:55]i was i figured you didn't give him props you made fun of rod stewart but i thought we could

[79:59]honor rod stewart and this is forever young great song

[80:04]this is such a good song

[80:10]and i gotta say too does anybody have anything real to say about the song before i do my

[80:17]i'm just enjoying rod's voice like how does he do that man he just nails this thing thank you

[80:21]for saying you enjoy my voice aaron i appreciate that i think the thing that makes me think about

[80:26]i think about being young because i i remember listening to this song when i was younger

[80:30]and thinking about that rumor that rod stewart had to go to the hospital because he had so much

[80:34]semen in his stomach what yeah did you never hear that rumor they had to go to the hospital to get

[80:40]his stomach pumped because he had too much semen in it no no that would miss me do we have a legal

[80:46]document so i guess that's something you said earlier what are you passing down to your kid

[80:50]that you don't think other people are passing down to you

[80:51]i guess that's one of them because i knew that listen if you knew that rumor uh can you text in

[80:57]802-277-BECK and just put i remember okay hashtag i remember it's going to let me know if anybody

[81:02]remembers that rumor or if it was just something i heard maybe from the hospital hippa i mean come

[81:08]on i think this song is really about maintaining a positive attitude as you get older right and

[81:13]staying young even as you get older and i was thinking about that this week i was like you

[81:16]know what i went to vegas for six days like i still got it i was showing i still got it i'm

[81:21]you guys are older what are some things that you're still doing that are showing hey

[81:24]i'm still vibrant i'm still young i'm still into into life here

[81:28]drinking the star special at the kingfish man i can still do a shot

[81:33]did i get it yeah did i get a gout flare up the next day of course i did but i still can go out

[81:39]and drink a shot of beer wow this is sure gonna give me gout all you young guys over there agree

[81:45]you guys know what i'm talking about oh you think gout's really bad it's actually not it happens all

[81:51]the time i'm just kidding i'm just kidding i'm just kidding i'm just kidding

[81:51]i'm just gonna get a flare up i actually have medicine all ready to go for it it's also it's

[81:55]all lined up the one thing i can do is we have retaining walls in the backyard and i can still

[81:59]pretend like i'm doing a box jump onto the retaining wall it's about two feet high but

[82:02]you know i can still jump all the way up onto the retaining wall i can still smoke kids in video

[82:08]games there's a website where you can play kids in tetris and so i'll play my class in tetris

[82:13]i win every single time i'm too good they can't handle they're like what is this game what is

[82:21]it beat by me right now it's great rob you also crush people in weightlifting competitions but

[82:26]technically you keep going up in the age bracket so i don't think that really counts no it doesn't

[82:31]because and plus the way i look now like i kind of like when i'm at the gym now i realize who i

[82:36]look you know what wrestler i look like now hacksaw jim duggan like i've gotten the hacksaw

[82:42]jim duggan body and it really is a bummer because nobody ever even at the height of his career

[82:47]nobody was ever like boy he's got a great body like nobody ever said that what what

[82:51]hey when we're when we're in vegas on january 21st to the 23rd this year you have to carry around a

[82:57]two by four with a flag stapled to it i definitely you have to i have yeah and i'll be in my navy

[83:03]white so that'll make sense all right we're gonna skip the next song or the last song on the list

[83:07]this is five for fighting a hundred years you guys know this one oh yeah oh of course oh okay yes

[83:15]this is all about the struggles of going from youth to a midlife crisis

[83:21]to death like he's reliving all these different ages the most interesting thing about this song

[83:27]is that the melody is actually sampled from the opening song in this album the melody from this

[83:33]song is sampled from plain song on this album we're listening to yes that's incredible the way

[83:40]i don't know if we'll be able to fight him if you go back to listen to plain song at the beginning

[83:44]it's the same let's just see there's a chance that we're gonna be able to find i don't know

[83:47]if we'll be able to fight that's a great time i

[83:51]yeah i hear it there yeah pretty awesome russell five for fighting that's that's rad that is wild

[84:01]you have to be think they were heavily influenced by the cure right oh yes you must have listened

[84:07]to this album so many times i would say a judge would also say they were heavily influenced by

[84:10]the cure for sure russell that was the that was the list of songs about getting older

[84:17]i feel great i'm gonna sleep great tonight really appreciate you bringing that to us

[84:21]one quote i did one quote i did read which i'm gonna leave all our listeners with including

[84:27]brian from woodbury is every moment of your life is the oldest you've ever been yeah so this moment

[84:32]right now is the oldest you guys have ever been i love it they may be giants have a whole song

[84:37]about it uh all right now we have love song this got up to number two on the charts is their most

[84:44]successful single ever such a great song this is the one he didn't like though right he said this

[84:51]love a more straightforward pop song type thing and he he said it was the worst song on the album

[84:57]i believe really it's so different like it's a totally different song the rest of the album god

[85:01]i love it it sounds so good this either this the first three sounded like stadium anthems to me

[85:07]you know this one sounds like it's going back five years from where it was and it's kind of

[85:12]more early 80s but yeah i agree next up last dance

[85:21]i think this was the first of two songs that had a lot of whispering on it there were two straight

[85:27]songs with a lot of whispering not just a little bit i was like there there may be a limit on how

[85:32]much whispering i can do on my top 500 albums i am gonna say this album 1000 passes my college

[85:39]vibe check you put this album on you were setting a vibe in your room you play lullaby you're setting

[85:45]a vibe don't come talk to me right leave me alone let me cry in the dark this song is called the

[85:50]lullaby russell

[85:51]the song's narrator describes a nightly visit from menacing spider-man who is always hungry

[86:01]looking for a victim shivering in bed oh i was reading about this one too and i he said it was

[86:07]inspired by uh this is it robert smith he's inspired by a song his dad would sing to him as

[86:12]a kid and his dad would do these really creepy lullabies where he'd say sleep now or you won't

[86:17]wake up at all can you imagine what kind of what kind of

[86:20]insane parent tells like creepy lullabies forcing their kid to go have you guys ever heard like what

[86:26]is it the brothers grim like the actual fairy tales what they actually are like there's a

[86:33]podcast that my kids listen to oh yeah and sarah listen i'm like what are you guys listening to

[86:38]like they like like little little mermaid hansel like little mermaid she dies at the end

[86:43]like yeah you know handsome gretel they get cooked in the oven like it's a whole right

[86:46]kids cooked in an oven yeah yeah you know at the end of uh at the end of beauty

[86:50]the beast the beast dies from an anal bleaching gone wrong it's a it's terrible

[86:55]anal bleaching place loses their license and it's a terrible tragedy if i asked you right now is

[87:06]there a picture online regulations is there a picture online of the beauty putting the beast

[87:12]poop into a bag and throwing it in a garbage can no no does that exist online do you think that

[87:16]picture what are you doing no like where she's picking you know must pick up after

[87:20]your pet and it's like the beauty of the beast i bet that exists

[87:23]i don't know rob why don't you check it out you guys are lucky so late

[87:28]next up we have fascination streets oh sounds like rob is a fascination

[87:34]what now whoa this is heavy this song became the number one single on billboards

[87:44]a new thing that they made up called the modern rock tracks that stayed on top for seven weeks

[87:50]modern rock tracks also known as songs that suck well now it became it became alternative

[87:58]it became alternative and there's been one artist that had the longest space

[88:04]between their hits on the alternative uh charts you know who that artist was the longest between

[88:09]their first and second hit on the track who was it beck did it better like a 25 year hiatus

[88:17]between his two number one alternative songs wow

[88:20]it's true what were you gonna say aaron well i wanted to know if uh i mean i think matt's

[88:26]probably our top nine inch nails fan aficionado on the podcast do we know if trent resner was a

[88:30]fan of the cure i feel like i have no idea i don't know i think about that you can hear some of that

[88:36]yeah to me but i mean yeah no especially on that to be honest to be i listened you know the first

[88:42]four or five songs on this album that i thought were awesome when i listened to them in heavy

[88:49]half of this i just i started to just skip over it it's kind of a drag i just got it because drags on

[88:55]it becomes much more gloomscapey and much less it does musical uh prayers for rain aaron you were

[89:01]you were right before we go to the next one you were right trent resner inducted the cure into

[89:04]the rock and roll hall of fame oh my god you know what i bet he did listen to him then that makes me

[89:10]think he did listen to him prayers for rain

[89:15]matt this was

[89:19]my guess for your 100 song i don't know why but this was my guess

[89:23]interesting i don't know why this would be such a some part in some part later in the song that

[89:29]jumped out this would be such a good karaoke song wouldn't it it's like seven minutes long

[89:35]everyone's like why is this happening you just like sitting up on a stool and brooding the whole

[89:40]time i don't know tinny little backing track just doesn't quite capture the bombastic nature of this

[89:47]arrangement i'm telling you like this is a song that i've been listening to for a long time and

[89:49]this is not a music i would want to listen to all the time but it sounds so good so well put together

[89:54]i think like for what it's trying to do this one's got the one with all these guitar effects effects

[90:00]all over it right yeah and at the end it ends with thunder and it connects to this song

[90:06]uh the same deep water as you great title by the way great title

[90:12]rob i sent you a clip for this song if you can go to it i think it's about 50 seconds into the song

[90:19]i don't know if it's on the one i sent you're the one you have oh i don't know i just have the one i

[90:23]have i put it to 20 seconds because that's what you said go to about 50 okay listen can you just

[90:28]go 50 and take a listen to this quick

[90:29]i heard something on this and it took me a second to click in my mind i remember wwe wrestling

[90:40]superstar mr perfect this sounds exactly like oh really i guarantee the guy who writes the wwe

[90:49]it sounds exactly the same doesn't it oh no yeah they ripped it off 100 whoa i mean they just ripped

[90:59]it off it's the same song isn't it yeah they just ripped it off it's so strange absolutely

[91:04]perfect it's so strange because you would think you know what wrestler i think would come out to

[91:08]cure songs what was that sting better taker yeah i mean does the sting look like he would be

[91:14]robert smith he's kind of got a goth look to him i think you're right one thousand

[91:19]percent robert smith takes off the mask and it's robert smith below uh all right i should start a

[91:24]website like you know there's like there's like there's like who sampled who and what song sounds

[91:28]like what song i should have a a website called like what wwf song is like which famous pop song

[91:35]oh my god that'd be so good just they're just totally blatantly ripping off so i'm looking

[91:39]this up mr perfect there's something called exodus theme is that the name of the song russell did you

[91:44]i've got i've got perfectly perfect or i don't know what the one i sent off let's call it even

[91:48]better song title sorry that one i don't know if it's the same one or not matt why well because

[91:53]that was stolen from a 1960 london orchestra score or something i get so maybe we are just

[92:01]uncovering that the cure we gotta pull this up now we're pulling the thread mr perfect exodus

[92:08]exodus theme wait it's on grannyhands.com let me change the theme of exodus okay sure

[92:18]oh this is different

[92:22]it's nice though let's see maybe it will kick into that

[92:29]walk it out yeah i've never heard this from mr

[92:39]mr perfect fan if i remember right he was a good wrestler technically that's a perfect song for a

[92:47]guy coming out to wrestle or if you're a guy coming out to wrestle you're a good wrestler

[92:48]making a movie about cowboys in wyoming and they're looking over a landscape somewhere like

[92:53]it's such a strange song to have as a wrestler it's bizarre this disintegration by the way that

[92:59]last song in the same deep water view he said that when he was singing he said he was shocked

[93:03]that he could still care about music as much as he cared when he was making that song he was

[93:08]blown away by it which is great just awesome disintegration one of the cures best this is

[93:15]voted fourth best song in a fan poll i talked to somebody

[93:18]how would you describe how would you just rosie what would you say about this song how would you

[93:23]describe it in the album the album or this song would you call this maybe the

[93:30]i would call this a titular track a titular track this is a titular track yeah and you know what the

[93:36]deal is though this song is longer it's a long titular it's long these are some long titular

[93:42]tracks i like i do like the songs better that have a bit more driving rhythm to it

[93:48]which i think i've said many times about stuff that some of this stuff in the middle

[93:52]when the drums kind of drop out i get a little bit lost i like this stuff when they combine the

[93:56]glooms what would you call it gloomscape rob with a little bit of rhythm i i think this is a good

[94:02]album to just put on if you're like i was gonna say doing something around the house but this

[94:07]would be insanely depressing to also be like moving the dishes or whatever people do with

[94:11]dishes moving i don't know what people do clanking the dish yeah clanking the dishes while i'm trying

[94:16]to make a famous podcast here

[94:18]homesick

[94:20]this is the last song the keyboardist contributed a song to before he was kicked out

[94:26]for being too happy so is he playing a piano so there's piano in the mix here

[94:33]and there's a yeah maybe not i don't know this

[94:37]this is a little bit of whispering here again i don't know sludgy it gets

[94:43]it gets tough to get all the way through this album now we get to the final

[94:48]transition

[94:48]this is the opposite of a titular track because it's a track that billboard claimed was so

[94:54]depressing that robert smith couldn't even name it and to be fair robert smith said this song is

[94:59]about how making an album is an utterly pointless occupation okay so don't think what that means

[95:04]about making a podcast about an album swings back around it's actually good

[95:10]it's important we're doing important work for the culture

[95:14]i love this

[95:18]though i do think it sounds so good is he a good singer aaron or not i don't know i you know i feel

[95:26]i feel similar to him as i did about morrissey where like the stuff that's really on is really

[95:31]on and then sometimes he chooses to do like non-singing kind of stuff and i don't know there

[95:36]there are tracks here in the middle where i just i get tired of his voice but i i do think that when

[95:40]he's really singing great it's great i think it's a little ubu i'm not gonna lie russell that's what

[95:45]i think listen that is it for disintegration okay and uh i know what you're thinking you know what's

[95:53]funny you know what's funny it would be funny rob please tell me because i've been looking all night

[95:57]i cannot find it uh what would you describe an anal ass bleaching because it really isn't useful

[96:03]but it's not ugly so what would the what would the short name for that be well unfortunately

[96:09]it's ubu because it's unuseful and ugly it's the same letters it's ubo

[96:15]only one perfect asshole that's because you're just going for that perfect asshole

[96:18]that's what you're striving for when you go and just you go ahead and say give me that one perfect

[96:26]asshole do you think do you think at the anal bleaching place it's like a barber shop where

[96:29]they hold the mirror up at the end and they're like hey what do you think and you gotta look

[96:34]and you and you have to look and say wow that looks great because you can't i mean it's like

[96:38]you go in with pictures of the one you wanted to look like like no i didn't want this one but that

[96:45]nine and eleven o'clock can we kind of maybe clean that up a little bit yeah there's still

[96:50]some scrapings on there i see the fade over on the right isn't quite what i was looking for yeah

[96:54]it's it makes you realize that oh it just makes the rest of the area more brown like my night okay

[96:59]okay so yeah okay between four and six yeah my nine and eleven you're four and six okay yeah

[97:05]looks looks fantastic

[97:08]just thinking about things guys just think about getting older this list actually really

[97:15]bummed me out big time oh i thought it was a positive list well i mean hey that's kind of

[97:21]like this album right we've got this album coming in at 116 okay uh 116 and is this a positive thing

[97:29]like russell thinks his list about getting old was the very positive things of getting old and

[97:33]songs about getting old uh and by the way i'm glad you didn't include the wreck of the edmund

[97:37]fitzgerald on there because that uh had made two previous lists russell so we couldn't use it but

[97:42]that's also about getting older

[97:43]i'm

[97:45]because you start thinking like hey maybe a job where i'm on a boat away from my family for months

[97:49]at a time actually not that bad doesn't sound that like a big of a deal sounds good uh is this album

[97:56]good is this a place at 116 a good place to put this album listen we wanted 80s pop and we kind

[98:03]of got 80s pop here a little bit um and if you agree at 116 this is a rolling well toned if you

[98:10]think this album should have been higher okay i mean think about all the other gloomscapes albums

[98:14]we've done

[98:15]should this been higher than those that would be a rolling bone it should have been up higher

[98:20]it should have been better or is this list a lot like getting older okay anytime you stand up or

[98:26]sit down you know what sounds going to come out oh yeah this is this album a rolling groan should

[98:33]not have been at 116 should have been farther back russell what do you think rolling well

[98:37]toned rolling bone or rolling groan i'm kind of torn on this one i enjoyed some of the synths and

[98:43]some of the or i don't know if you'd call it orchestral or whatever but i think it's a good

[98:45]what you'd call the music kind of the vibe that it gave you i don't know if you guys called it

[98:48]soundscape or what the right term is for it but it was really beautiful to listen to and

[98:53]you can kind of sit back and be introspective while listening to it but for me i read that

[98:58]this um you know they were one of the biggest bands in the world they were selling out like

[99:02]wembley stadium and giant stadium in 1989 that's when that's when i was a kid and i don't even

[99:06]remember listening to any songs from the cure so i think it's kind of weird that they were so huge

[99:11]when i was a kid but i'd had i don't know anything about them i would have never known that they

[99:15]were a big band so for me it's kind of weird that they're this high on the list but i definitely see

[99:20]how they could be very influential for future bands but for me it's just probably not what i'm

[99:24]going to come back and listen to over and over so i'm going to say it's rolling groan it's too high

[99:28]on the list rosie what do you think rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling groan robert smith

[99:33]and the ohio state buckeyes yeah as we talked about this album starts out great the first

[99:39]four to five tracks i think they really make a cool sound they set the stage i

[99:45]think that that's kind of when you guys ask about what i think robert smith's voice i think on

[99:49]pictures of you that's when it's at its best uh but just the rest of the album to me just doesn't

[99:54]live up to the to the first half it got kind of long it lost me a little bit and uh we talked

[99:59]about 80s pop but still no madonna so i think i'm gonna have to call this one a rolling roll

[100:03]what one of these kind of sound didn't i mean come on you don't think this sounded a little bit like

[100:09]vogue i agree with you yeah no no i mean yeah you're totally right but i just think that like

[100:15]i just don't know as an album

[100:17]let's hear it for the boys

[100:22]sorry uh matt what do you think rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling

[100:29]groan to be fair i wanted to hear 80s synth pop you guys wanted to hear 80 pop i wanted to hear

[100:36]80s synth pop so i absolutely loved listening to this album but listened to it multiple times

[100:42]and then started just listening to the first four or five songs then

[100:45]started diving into is this like depressing synth pop you know compared to like in excess and you

[100:53]know the pet shop boys and i you know i really started getting into what kind of synth 80s

[100:58]synth pop do i like and this is the stuff i like the depressing alternative stuff oh my god

[101:03]think about getting old and all this stuff and so so this is stuff like i i i this is the era and the

[101:14]music that i've been listening to for a long time and i've been listening to it for a long time and

[101:15]i've been listening to it for a long time and i've been listening to it for a long time and i've been

[101:15]into right now trying to figure out what exactly my avenue is um in this so i loved listening to

[101:23]this album you love that kate bush album too right yeah no it was great things like that um talking

[101:30]heads was listening a lot of talking heads lately you know things like that uh pet shop boys a little

[101:35]poppy a little weird i don't know not not into them as much but trying to figure out to rosie's

[101:41]point and i think we've all said it the first five four or five songs actually i've been listening to

[101:45]excellent the bottom just falls out on this album so i'm gonna say it's roll it should be lower on

[101:50]the list should be meanings it has a higher number so that means it's rolling grown i haven't given

[101:55]a rolling grown in a while is that is it rolling grown means it shouldn't be so high it's not very

[101:59]good yeah so i think it should be you know on the list but it shouldn't be this high up there's

[102:04]plenty of albums that are a little bit more fuller and more complete if you ask me yeah i think this

[102:11]is an album where like if you're just depressed about like things but you can't quite put your

[102:15]on it this is the album to listen to yeah if you're depressed about siamese dream by uh yeah

[102:19]smashing pumpkins listen to that man that'll put you in a really weird spot if you're depressed

[102:23]and you know exactly what's bugging you go back and listen to the smiths like that's a much like

[102:27]direct this is kind of more more roundabout you're so funny man the stuff you're listening

[102:31]to it's just so funny to me i think this is a rolling depression i mean this again wait this

[102:38]can't be a wrong depression this was the smiths two weeks ago was a rolling depression oh man

[102:45]where's our song about the repeated bits this is good night this is good night guys guess what

[102:54]you're the only ones who ever going to hear this bit because this gets i gotta tell you guys you're

[102:58]all incorrect okay because this gets a rolling integration disintegration this is this is the

[103:07]album and definitely not because i already did that one for the smiths and i remember that uh

[103:13]listen this is this is like an

[103:15]album though where he is going through it and he's talking about it and like he's having a rough time

[103:20]and things are not going well uh and he has the ability to talk about it and express his feelings

[103:26]instead of just not talking to his wife and hoping things get better like that

[103:30]that's not as good of a way to solve the problem okay and i wrote these notes a week ago i just

[103:35]want to remind you so things are going fine now i thought this was for sure a segue into next

[103:40]week's album no i'm not going through some stuff ironically a trip to the apple orchard improved

[103:45]my marriage it was why it's i gotta tell you guys that story that's a wild story rob was that ranking

[103:50]before after your wife heard you playing the the song where you were clanking pots and pans

[103:54]everything's it's it's like my marriage is like it's bc no pd past dishes time like that's

[104:02]my marriage before the dishes and after the dishes next up

[104:05]we look at a tv channel that only showed kathy lee's co-host after 11 p.m

[104:15]it's late regis station by kanye west

[104:19]guys i'm not saying that it's a grave digger but you couldn't possibly make the wheels bigger

[104:28]that's a little taste for the parody song actually

[104:30]it's about grave digger so we have to talk about grave digger now so it works

[104:35]beck did it better guys i actually came across an old magazine in my basement

[104:45]a penthouse i thought i would read you the dear penthouse is that what it's called the penthouse

[104:48]letter rob what's it called i thought it was the forum because it's actually like the greeks it's

[104:53]actually yes it's the forum it says dear penthouse then later on on the drive home i called rob's

[104:58]wife from a payphone i said i was the cops and your husband j husbands in jail the state looks

[105:04]down on jokes about anal bleaching what's my age again russell i would pay 780 dollars for that

[105:15]that's a no-brainer

[105:18]i'll go to the concert with you man all right you guys i don't know how you put up with me

[105:26]i was i could not find it today goodbye we gotta play goodbye yeah it's time to say

[105:33]it's time to say oh how's brian how's brian's kids gonna know the show's over

[105:45]it's time to say

[105:47]are we talking about the viking are we talking about the oh okay yeah

[106:02]yeah i was gonna be an nfl player and i decided not to do that

[106:14]you

[106:15]all right
