Led Zeppelin: II (1969)
[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums is decided by
[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the
[00:08]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts who promise to do almost no research
[00:13]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy back did it better
[00:19]we are all the way up to album 123 one two three something it's do re mi and from 1969 it's led
[00:29]zeppelin and guys this album led zeppelin 2 this album is a lot like a navy sailor i i
[00:37]pause for laughter all right so let's get into this you know i did some math this this radio
[00:45]song is going to be dedicated to doing math i did some math because i was thinking how many
[00:49]songs are we going to cover in the duration of this podcast so let's listen welcome everybody
[00:55]k-rob k-r-o-b you know i was sitting here thinking about
[00:59]if a podcast is doing 500 albums how many songs would they cover total in the course of that
[01:05]podcast well instead of telling you i think i'm gonna yell at you and singing is kind of a yelling
[01:12]that's like oh yeah we record every seven days we cover an album once a week
[01:22]i was wondering number of songs that
[01:29]we talk about in totality
[01:31]so i did some arithmetic
[01:36]and now i have done the math
[01:42]123 albums down the drain 377 down the drain 10 songs per album on average
[01:52]oh you might not believe it's true
[01:57]oh let's see here but i got it
[01:59]i gotta say the number of songs to you
[02:01]5 000 songs
[02:04]well that means about a hundred good jokes 5 000 songs
[02:13]it'll take about 10 years to give or take 5 000 songs
[02:17]oh god well i think i got a couple of days
[02:21]10 years seems like a long long time
[02:25]but we're still three years along
[02:29]there's no way we do this and if you count my parody rhymes
[02:35]well the number of songs is totally wrong
[02:39]so you figure that the effective better guys are going to cover about 500 albums
[02:45]there's about 10 songs per album so if you do the math they're covering 5 000 songs
[02:51]and they're going to have something cool and funny to say about each one
[02:55]ah those guys are so great and handsome and actually cool friends
[02:59]it's 5500 songs
[03:01]oh
[03:03]and it's over 500 drinks for us
[03:19]when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time
[03:24]listen that was a stretch even when i was writing that and recording i was like
[03:28]look it up on the internet
[03:29]you know what 10 years from now is a long time
[03:31]i bet i bet barry burnsville will have grandkids playing hockey by then
[03:34]can you imagine how great my balls are
[03:37]i've got the perfect
[03:38]i mean i'm trying to imagine that
[03:41]how great is the most greater
[03:42]listen welcome to back to better
[03:45]we are talking about led zeppelin 2
[03:47]ii as the navy captain calls i want to get back circle back to that joke i thought it was a good
[03:52]one and i've got three guys here i've got a lot of guys here actually who want to talk about this
[03:56]album i've got matt minneapolis matt how are you doing
[03:59]rob when the mountains crumble to the sea we'll still be doing this goddamn podcast
[04:04]oh he did it he did it
[04:07]jeez
[04:08]uh yeah but if it's me in middle school that'd be a c plus
[04:10]that's the first joke
[04:13]come on you can do better
[04:15]better
[04:17]barry from burnsville be c plus
[04:18]you're a better person than this you can do better you have high standards for yourself
[04:21]okay it doesn't matter how tired you are do this rock be funny
[04:24]okay here we go
[04:25]try number two
[04:26]russell in minnesota russell how are you doing today
[04:28]i'm doing great
[04:29]rob you need some cool and i'm not fooling i'm gonna send you back to school and yeah
[04:33]oh that's right you get four weeks off because you teach at a private school you asshole no
[04:38]school for you anytime soon yeah i actually use this time to do a little lesson planning russell
[04:43]right just kidding right and then listen i i've got aaron out in california and aaron was telling
[04:49]me the other day that uh he was he his wife got mad at him because he was singing that monkey song
[04:54]uh i'm a believer and he was like i i don't believe you're mad and then he saw her face
[05:00]i got aaron how are you doing
[05:02]if you're not if you don't know the monkey songs very well russell you're not gonna get that joke
[05:11]or have watched shrek yeah that's true remember any of the lyrics from this song let's talk about
[05:19]led zeppelin too that was your that was your big witty response aaron i don't have it i don't
[05:24]i didn't have it tonight i distract him listen let's go to the like we had like an extra hour
[05:29]and 45 minutes to prepare while rob was super late you couldn't have gotten i was reading
[05:33]prior i was reading a book let's just call let's go to the back line
[05:37]what book are you reading rosie so soon
[05:42]just the dumbest of the dumb every fucking time
[05:48]callous just the dumbest of the dumb
[05:49]dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb shit listeners
[05:52]i'm so i was so confused about like am i really laughing and then i realized the
[05:56]audio in my ears it's it's really awkward when you play that when two of them are sitting on
[06:01]the zoom silent right now may not have had sim and pump from his to match however he did put
[06:07]cocaine up his rectum as a way to protect his nasal passages so listen i just want to say i
[06:14]do love our colors i do love our listeners they bring me great joy bexters but it turns out this
[06:19]we have yet another rod stewart salmon call where that may have been false but he did and i've heard
[06:25]about people doing this where you do drugs and you put it up your ass to save your nose
[06:29]russell what do you think about that i don't know i think i have a pretty good looking nose it's kind
[06:34]of short like there's no like weird bends or anything i wouldn't mess with my nose i feel
[06:39]like if i had two choices i'd probably go the rod stewart can you imagine russell's like hey let's go
[06:43]in the bathroom and do cocaine right and you go in there and then the first thing he does is just
[06:46]sits on the counter and you're like wait what
[06:49]why are you spreading your cheeks it feels like you waste more that way like i feel like
[06:55]it might be nice and luxurious to like sit on a like on a mountain of cocaine naked or something
[07:00]but then you're wasting all of it that touched your butt like if you just are doing lines you
[07:05]can be a lot more efficient i would imagine i've never maybe if there's like a day in there first
[07:11]or you know i don't know i've never had i have never had any interest in doing any sort of
[07:15]stimulants that has never once i've never once been like hey i wonder what it would be like if
[07:19]i was really hyper if i had a ton more jacked up yeah like i i'm sitting here right now i can barely
[07:23]sit still i'm like i don't i think i would literally just like run around in a circle i
[07:27]don't know i do you guys have any interest in that like if you knew you weren't going to get hurt
[07:31]would you try it out just to get some more energy russell's fired up he looks he's giving me a big
[07:35]nod big i could see mac getting all jacked up on mountain dew i can see that kind of going that
[07:42]route he's like a spider monkey have you guys had a colonoscopy
[07:49]have you guys had a colonoscopy yet today or i got a group on for one so i don't i think it's
[07:57]rob do you have i have had no i have we talked about this where i had to get a standing desk
[08:04]at work and the only way to get a standing desk at work was to get a doctor's note
[08:07]what okay hang on no we have not let's yeah i'm listening corporate america rosie's an upper
[08:13]middle management guy so he probably understands how this works doctor's note legitimately so hr
[08:18]stands out i don't know if you've ever had a standing desk at work and the only way to get a
[08:19]corporate office rectum damn near killed me at the at the old office they were like hoarding
[08:27]raising standing desk right i just really wanted a standing desk and so the hr person the guy was
[08:33]like well you know if you had like hemorrhoids that's the thing like he was all worried about
[08:39]so i'm like i know my doctor my doctor i coached his kid at saint olaf i know him really well
[08:44]right been golfing with him all this stuff i'm like i will go into the doctor's office
[08:49]and i will tell this guy because i know him really well like hey doc i need a note that says that i
[08:54]have severe hemorrhoids what do you think he starts laughing he goes i'll write that for you
[08:59]kind of a thing but he felt all of a sudden the need that he actually had to check oh no do you
[09:05]actually have and so i would have just went and bought my own dance stand-up desk yeah so i did
[09:12]get a finger up my butt but i did get a standing desk so it was all good i think it's weird that
[09:17]my doctor when he does that he's like oh my god i'm like oh my god i'm like oh my god i'm like oh
[09:19]that uh that thing he he paints his finger like it's boba fett and it's falling into the sandworm
[09:25]you know he's like that's what it looks like you're just falling into the i also got a discount
[09:31]my doctor i did your doctor give you a discount if he doesn't use a glove he's like if you don't
[09:34]make me use a glove you take 25 off i was like boy that's a really good deal reimbursable expense
[09:40]he was in the thing was it was in pesos so i'm not sure what the conversion was
[09:44]and my spanish isn't great but i think it was
[09:49]so mad do you even use your standing desk you just sit there do you just lower it all the way
[09:53]down i mean i i try to for at least two hours a day i try to use the standing desk usually
[09:59]sometime in the morning and then sometime in the afternoon and usually it's more than that but
[10:02]one of those things i try to use it at least two hours a day and i don't know if that's a good goal
[10:06]or a bad goal or what man i love how your hr team was like hey we need to we need to spend the time
[10:11]to make this guy get a doctor's note to pay like 82 to get him a desk that rises and fall like what
[10:17]what the hell exactly and again it was one of those things i was like well do you have it well
[10:21]we have a we have a limited supply of them right but we just we need and it's like so again it was
[10:26]almost like a boneyard of standing desk and you just needed a reason for it so i did find a mat
[10:31]in the boneyard on the fifth floor somebody just like you had retired i've been fired and so then
[10:35]i found it yeah first of all the boneyard was the name of my dorm room college um but also i think
[10:41]it would be weird if you went got a used standing desk and it turns out that somebody has put a
[10:47]one of those uh what were they called what were we talking about yesterday i think it helps you
[10:51]jack off guys what were you talking we were talking about it if somebody had glued on one
[10:54]of those on the bottom of the standing desk and then at work they're sitting there and just moving
[10:58]the desk up and down like you see even their office and the desk is going up like this and
[11:02]then it goes faster and faster faster but it would be but it would be rob's thing it would
[11:06]it wouldn't be like a new contraption it would be like this rusty old like metal contraption
[11:12]that creaks while it was doing its business right like an old slide that you see that at a park
[11:17]where you're like that thing is too old and rusty i would never let anyone go down that
[11:21]those are the ones you find in the barnyard it reminds me of my doctor rusty
[11:27]to see what everybody's up to it's time for my drink from last week the rusty nail
[11:32]whose dorm room was called that again
[11:36]roll it going aaron how's it going with you oh it's going great uh i just received
[11:43]word that there are some raccoons on my porch but i am going to stay here i'm
[11:46]going to stick it out i'm going to stick it out yeah and i'm sending me pictures of their
[11:50]records raccoons on our porch back home mommy used to just shoot them off with a broom
[11:54]so so the wife is she's your your lady as you call her she's texting you saying there
[12:01]are raccoons on the roof on the porch yeah she sent me photos of the raccoons on the porch yeah
[12:06]so aaron do you have trash cans or anything out there is he getting into your your compost bins
[12:11]or what's attracting this critter that's actually well i'm glad you asked russell we i don't know if
[12:16]this is on the podcast because it's not a pet themed podcast but we're adopting some cats
[12:21]they are you kidding me why would you do that to yourself listen do you think i did this to myself
[12:28]hey we have a small house don't be quiet for a second we have a small house is there a way i
[12:32]could put shit in that house somewhere i got a great idea we should get two cats we just we
[12:38]just purchased this this isn't a rental anymore this is ours that one day we're gonna have to
[12:42]resell how could we lower the resale value as much as possible that's
[12:46]the thing a couple small kittens the smell of cat piss works every time they live outside they
[12:53]piss and shit outside they belonged to the lady next door who has now passed rest in peace and
[13:00]when she went into assisted living her cats just roamed the neighborhood and the neighbors talked
[13:05]us into being the house that adopted the cat so we've been we've been feeding them outdoors and
[13:11]then uh alice and james and james is too scared to come inside alice comes in when it's time to eat
[13:16]but we've been feeding them outdoors and then uh alice and james and james is too scared to come
[13:16]we feed them on the porch anyway we had fed them tonight and hadn't brought the food dishes in so
[13:21]that's what the raccoons are snacking on go matt rosie this this is something i learned a long time
[13:26]ago if you're at the neighborhood cocktail party and you look around and you can't find the suckers
[13:31]it's you yeah the neighborhood party is the only thing that's gotten me to go to the gym in the
[13:36]last six months here you gotta skip that shit i do think you should have been suspicious here when
[13:41]you saw it was the solar panel guy he just had a mustache on he was like hey you want to be these
[13:44]cats now
[13:45]hello
[13:46]all the dumb neighborhood shit right they're just like i got the sun on my forehead so are the kids
[13:51]are the cats they have to stay outside or they're choosing to stay outside here there's a difference
[13:55]here they we i mean we kick them out yeah and you guys it's been 37 degrees at night here it's cold
[14:01]as shit and alice keeps coming back every day we throw her out when it's bedtime and seems fine so
[14:06]i mean it's working out the coolest part about having outdoor cats is your kid is going to learn
[14:10]what worms can coming out of an animal's butt looks like that and we've had uh we've not had
[14:16]two rat carcasses on the porch yeah and like guts and everything yeah it's really exciting stuff yeah
[14:23]and you're getting all the you're getting all the joys of having a cat outside i mean what the fuck
[14:28]are you doing like what the other morning they came up to breakfast and i opened the door and
[14:32]you guys i live like i swear i live in like a suburban place but i've opened the door the cat
[14:38]is at the front door there was a coyote just trotting right down the middle of the street
[14:41]like i don't know we've got cats and cats and raccoons and other critters in your house
[14:46]you got food no the critters are outside they're on the porch it's fine but i am getting some
[14:53]photos russell you live on the you live on the south end of the nature center you know in the
[15:00]in the town where you live and i grew up on the north end true of the nature center and we would
[15:05]get raccoons as we call them up north raccoons um through the sewers that would come up because
[15:12]they lived in the nature center have you ever had any raccoon problems because
[15:16]of the nature i've never had a raccoon problem because of the nature center well you guys know
[15:20]i go up north every year and this place we've been going to for years i remember as a kid
[15:24]there was a three ragged three-legged raccoon that lived under the cabin and it was not a very
[15:30]nice raccoon the owner had shot off one of the legs because the the raccoon was being a pest
[15:36]and it stayed there and it lived under cabin four at the little wolf resort up at up near coals
[15:41]good old tripod yes and then my rear rolling going and i have to just get
[15:46]this out that wasn't your real one no no that's it was a fake it was a fake i have to do this one
[15:53]this week because it's gonna be only been doing this 123 episodes you always know that rosie
[15:58]saves the best for also just let you guys know i got some cats i'm also reversing my circumcision
[16:03]but i think you know the cats i want to talk about the cats that's great i got some weights
[16:07]i hang on at night it's not a big deal these cats are driving crazy you know what i mean
[16:11]they're always hanging off my foreskin weight i don't know maybe maybe i shouldn't have done that
[16:16]don't ask by the way if anybody goes on the back to a better tiktok and they see what videos are
[16:21]being shown to them with the algorithm and it is actually a lot of foreskin lengthening stuff just
[16:25]ignore that okay this is the foreskin lengthening part of the podcast i've got a five skin now i
[16:34]mean this thing is huge i'm sending that thing out it's like a parachute so i had so i think this is
[16:40]after christmas now but if i wait until next week it's too far beyond the holidays i had yet another
[16:45]year
[16:46]end party at work today and it was over zoom so this is one of these awkward office holiday
[16:52]parties over zoom one yep yep and did who who talked about it who talked about everybody's uh
[16:59]you know good things for the year like what they did well and this time there was none of that it
[17:04]was all you know all good collaboratory games you know everybody getting together but but there was
[17:10]a sort of family feud style thing where you know like there was a question you got to name some
[17:14]stuff and one of the
[17:16]the one of the questions was can you know name a christmas song about a fictional or or real
[17:23]character and you guys the whole thing is like put the answer in the chat and i was like can i say
[17:30]backdoor santa on the word you have to holiday thing can i do it and i was going to text you
[17:34]guys and tell you and then i chickened out i did not i did good king wenceslas instead i did not do
[17:39]backdoor santa i was so disappointed in myself i i thought you guys were gonna have a character i
[17:44]like it i thought the family feud question was going to be
[17:46]what family feud host looks the most like rob's balls oh oh richard karn that's easy
[17:53]i don't know tim
[17:56]richard karn yes well the subject of we'll play we'll play flannel underwear so that's not really
[18:04]fair when you're wearing flannel underwear everybody's balls look like richard karn
[18:08]on the subject of rob's balls how's it going with you rob would you guys pay for a christmas tree
[18:15]can i just ask you
[18:15]you're going to pay for a christmas tree
[18:16]uh 85 oh my god i got fucking ripped off god damn it well you do you do live in new york so
[18:24]i paid 190 oh that's fine is that fine or for just for just a standard your children love it
[18:32]i know somebody no they know yeah they love it erin they're they're middle schoolers they love
[18:38]jack shit they love sleeping in and then asking me what's for dinner that's it that's what they
[18:42]see so you guys are pagans and you like celebrating the german did you say rob
[18:46]is pagan yeah you guys like the german new year around solstice say jenny's pagan
[18:52]that's why you got a tree for me a stand-up desk is a bend over desk
[18:57]you just lower it down to like the lowest level she's like she's like lower down more
[19:03]i'm like oh come on you said we wouldn't do this this much anymore she's a doctor she could give
[19:10]you a note for that desk anybody wondering wasn't jesus supposedly born in a desert like is there
[19:16]is there christ is there pine trees and deserts what man what are you what are you talking about
[19:21]we're talking about me getting fucked by my wife on a standing desk where are you
[19:25]i'm trying to figure out how christmas trees fit in with the birth of jesus oh god
[19:31]fair question fair question uh so yeah i also know somebody who paid 270 for a christmas tree
[19:40]and i'm not gonna say who it was and i wasn't hanging out with them earlier today hey that's
[19:45]too much right this is a christmas tree i'm not gonna say who it was and i wasn't hanging out with
[19:46]them earlier today that's too much right this is a christmas tree i'm not gonna say who it was and i wasn't
[19:46]hanging out with them earlier today that's too much right this is a christmas tree i'm not gonna say who it was and i wasn't
[19:46]does it does it start with an s and ends with an uzan maybe and it's a nice tree but like what
[19:53]would be your guys's limit for buying a tree like what would be your limit for a price of a tree man
[19:58]150 150 so if it was 175 what you tell your kids like no i mean you know it's always like oh what
[20:05]if it was 152 what if it was this is this sounds like you know joe from woodbury when he just makes
[20:10]up arguments just to make up this sounds like a joe from woodbury right now i don't is there any
[20:16]what if there were a thousand dollars you'd still have to buy one right like what no no why not no
[20:21]you're just not gonna have christmas at your house well you can have christmas without that
[20:25]without the real tree yeah i'm at i'm gonna ask the question what the heck does a pine tree have
[20:30]to do with the birth of our lord savior baby jesus christ i don't know but it's a fuck ton
[20:36]of work i'll tell you that i mean i took this thing right so i got my tree and i went of course
[20:41]i got it i had to get on the subway immediately as soon as i pick up this tree and i'm walking
[20:46]home immediately my whole family has something else to do my wife is like oh i gotta go see these
[20:50]people over here and my kid's like i'm going with her and then the one kid went with me on the subway
[20:55]and then when we got on the subway car she went and sat on the other side of the car she wouldn't
[20:59]even look at me i wanted her to take a picture of me with the tree did your uh did your doorman
[21:04]help you take it up to the oh no no no i came in i was a back door santa i came in the back door
[21:08]with that so i didn't get needles everywhere speaking of needles on christmas trees i
[21:12]actually saw some that i thought aaron would be very interested i saw on the star tribune the other
[21:15]day there was a lot of needles on christmas trees i actually saw some that i thought aaron would be
[21:15]there was an article can you eat your christmas tree a twin cities forager reveals the answer
[21:21]oh there's an article on the star trib about whether christmas trees are edible well then
[21:25]the answer is yes right i mean you can't write an article they'd just be like no they're not so like
[21:29]so it says can you eat an old boot no if it's a first spruce or pine and you're confident it
[21:35]wasn't doused with pesticides you can eat it but just sticking the needles in your mouth isn't
[21:40]really the most pleasant sensory experience so they go through and they give you all these
[21:45]opportunities to use christmas tree needles in your food one of them is burning edible evergreens
[21:51]to make culinary ash as a substitute for salt what do you think of that aaron culinary okay
[21:57]that sounds kind of clever have you ever heard of culinary ass culinary ash look at that have you
[22:05]ever heard of that culinary ash over there aaron you can put your stand-up desk away when you're
[22:10]showing us your culinary ash all right you've eaten a lot of top chef restaurants i bet you've
[22:15]never eaten ash you know what it's interesting aaron you've never eaten ash aaron no never
[22:20]eaten oh you should try it sometime a lot of people like eating ash they think it's good
[22:24]culinary ash they love eating it they'll chow down on that ash anytime they want it's something
[22:29]and for some people it's a special treat you know maybe just on the weekends maybe on a holiday
[22:32]maybe on a birthday okay please please let me eat some ash you know
[22:38]evergreens are also high in vitamin c they have long been part of a traditional diet in colder
[22:45]parts of the world including the upper midwest and it's interesting there's actually a james beard
[22:50]award-winning restaurant it's an indigenous restaurant it's called awamni it's actually
[22:54]just one like the biggest award you can win in the midwest like it's best new midwest restaurant
[22:59]and they actually use that um they use edible evergreens with spruce tips for a lot of their
[23:05]cocktails so it turns out that evergreens are actually edible so aaron next time you go to the
[23:11]farmer's market you can yeah i'll let you guys know
[23:15]you know you could do too is go to your neighbors just pick up like when they throw that shit out in
[23:19]the garbage just grab it yeah grab it take it now you have to go to the market you guys gonna finish
[23:24]this report back you mean a wreath we're just gonna we're gonna finish our wreath what are you
[23:28]talking about okay cool yeah well i think i do think aaron i mean that tree is in the house
[23:34]right the tree is there and what would be better than reusing that recycling that tree
[23:39]and after the holidays you could be eating ash for days
[23:44]okay that's that's a special treat culinary ash yeah culinary ash
[23:50]i'm not letting this go this is the bit is this a safe space to admit that i don't have a
[23:57]like we have a reusable christmas tree we use the same christmas tree every year is this a safe place
[24:02]to admit that i think so i mine i'm down to a half tree because i've been eating ash like crazy
[24:08]this is gonna catch on guys this joke do i need to explain what i'm talking about
[24:12]okay it's the sean connery accent is he saying ass or ash we often have kids that listen you
[24:21]know like brian from woodbury his kids though so maybe you could explain it for the kid like
[24:25]dumb it down just for the kids what are you talking about uh no i won't be doing that i
[24:31]won't be explaining that to kids so thank you thought about it not gonna happen was is that
[24:35]everybody who did anybody not could do rolling going we haven't doing two of them matt rolling
[24:39]going with you rolling going how's it going with you
[24:42]is it time for the grading system for next week rob i took a flight a couple weeks ago
[24:49]and i've got notes about my flight for beck did it better plain old story time
[24:55]all right all right all right these are the stories that i like
[25:02]about the trip you're on we're gonna hear about your flight tonight
[25:10]flight tonight
[25:12]all right man what daredevil shit did you pull on this flight russell i'm gonna ask you
[25:19]what would be you're sitting in just your seat let's just call it like
[25:23]22 d you're on the aisle you're sitting in your seat whatever hemorrhoids are killing what would
[25:29]be the could you come up with like three of like the worst things that could happen to you just
[25:34]happen to be sitting in seat 22 d so the person next to me or the person across from me
[25:40]no you say anywhere behind you
[25:42]front of you across the aisle can i say one i've got one let's all say one i i'm gonna say that
[25:47]the person takes off their behind you takes off their shoes and puts their feet where you can see
[25:51]their bare feet kind of coming up from behind okay and aaron's aaron's smiling real big at that but
[25:56]that's i don't like it uh russell what do you think what's the worst thing that could happen
[26:01]on a plane i i think for me i'm a bigger guy if i get stuck by another bigger person i think that's
[26:07]always that's gonna make a three-hour trip feel like a seven-hour trip so i i think uh and and i'm gonna say that's the worst thing that could happen on a plane
[26:12]and i i would say being being stuck to someone else where your personal space is invaded
[26:17]i'm actually gonna say another one i have a second one and this reminds me of a plane a train trip
[26:22]a train trip that we took where i put my wife's bag up high now it turns out that my wife had a
[26:28]water bottle okay and did the water bottle have like a screw on top nope it had a magnetic top
[26:32]that came off dumping the entire contents of her bottle into the overhead space now you might say
[26:37]to yourself well that's okay right because the water is going to stay up there oh no the water
[26:43]immediately disappeared somehow into the train now as the train was going two seats in front of
[26:49]us and two seats in back of us water just starts from above and we have to pretend like it's not
[26:56]us and we're like where is this what it's dripping on us too we're like oh my gosh who put this water
[27:01]up here like you could not admit it uh and that was bad because it was my wife and so she was like
[27:07]don't you not to put that bag up there i go you saw me put the bag up there you never said but
[27:11]we can't let anybody know we're arguing about the water it's like you put the water up there up top
[27:14]don't spill it on everybody and everybody knows because we're in the middle of the water spill
[27:18]everybody knows who it is aaron how about you what's the worst thing that could be next to you
[27:23]on a plane uh somebody really talkative chatty somebody who wants to have a long long talk with
[27:29]me for the whole that was that was my you know again we've talked about it the the drunk single
[27:34]gal next to the drunk single guy you don't want to be
[27:37]you know they're like on some like weird date but they're stuck together for three hours like
[27:40]you know that's the weird one i i flew from minneapolis to west palm beach but i had to
[27:46]go through atlanta first okay oh god i forgot to talk we'll talk about this next time we'll talk
[27:51]about my my time i'll go quick i had a full i had a 5 30 flight oh yeah 5 30 flight am flight that's
[27:59]horrible all right and yeah it was horrible but it fit into the kids schedule well and all that
[28:04]stuff so i had to do it so boarding started boarding started boarding started boarding started
[28:07]was supposed to start at 4 40 for 5 30 you gotta just so 4 40 all night okay so i'm i'm trying to
[28:16]be responsible we've talked about this in the past right like i i got up late i hadn't packed the
[28:21]night before i had to pack lunches all this stuff right so nine o'clock the night before i packed
[28:26]my bag there you go i packed the lunches the next day nailed it i'm ready to get to the airport you
[28:30]open it up and it's two bologna sandwiches jesus christ i switched them around some dots pretzels
[28:37]and the kids i go to bed at like nine o'clock just a huge rubber ass they're like what is this i set
[28:42]my lunch i set my alarm i need to have my watch for four o'clock so i can get up take a shower
[28:48]leave by 4 30 you know all all's good and get to the airport you know and get to i'll be i'll be
[28:55]walking up just as my section's going okay well every once in a while your apple watch just might
[29:03]not do the hepatic whatever to start tapping on your phone and then you're like oh my god i'm
[29:07]your wrist to wake you up so i woke up i'm supposed to be boarding a flight at 4 40 i woke
[29:11]up at 4 18 if you get on this plane i'm i don't believe it okay can i i got up at 4 18 can i hit
[29:18]pause on this real quick yes your alarm is your watch yeah yeah that's fucking wild man that is a
[29:26]yeah you really don't want to wake up your wife do you i know exactly why you're doing that i know
[29:31]exactly why you do that if you're terrified to wake it up we've talked about this say save this
[29:37]can't talk about this stuff on this pod because my wife listens to this we have to save this for
[29:41]the after pod okay so 4 18 i get up all right i have everything bushed so i i've decided i can't
[29:50]take a shower i can brush my teeth and i can sprint to the airport i get there i park my car at 4 42
[29:56]oh my god again it's a close it's a close gate it's c2 or c3 and so i get there and i'm walking
[30:03]up at 4 45 and i get i get there right as comfort plus is is loading so extremely stressful
[30:10]extremely stressful i don't recommend it i figured out i need to have a little bit maybe a little bit
[30:14]better of an alarm system rob so i make sure now man it seems like you're purposely trying to push
[30:19]i'm not i'm not i but if if i hadn't packed lunches and like packed my bag the night before
[30:25]i wouldn't have made it russell i would i would have not made it so i i learned from the previous
[30:29]experience where i had to rush and almost missed and now i need to learn that i can't
[30:33]i need to set an alarm sometimes you sometimes you got to step over the line when you're walking
[30:37]up to the line all the time you're gonna miss a flight continuing to behave like this right you
[30:42]know i'm going to yep and i will i will admit it when i do all you guys will hear my story of
[30:47]missing a flight when i when it actually happens but so get on a flight i get i sit up comfort
[30:53]plus i'm in the middle the guy next to me he comes up he sits down next to me and rob this this this
[31:00]is what triggered or this would spurred the memory he
[31:03]has the worst bo i've ever had in my life next to joe jackson and then he had sandals on it's the
[31:09]middle of winter but he's coming from alaska he had sandals on and he kicks his sandals put them
[31:14]underneath the seat and kicks his feet up and so you could i could see his feet like the whole it
[31:18]was gross it really was a foot story yeah so then i get i get to atlanta i got like 45 minutes get
[31:26]on my next flight and i've got now i'm getting the two to me the two worst things that you could
[31:32]possibly happen on an airplane
[31:33]i've got a i've got a kid behind me that is kicking me the whole time and his mom can care
[31:39]less because she's just on her goddamn phone doesn't have any respect for anything so i'm not
[31:43]again i'm you know hey we're okay you kick the damn seat but it's just it gets old but i just
[31:51]you know we talked about this russell i'm uh what do we we're uh what happens if he gets the wrong
[31:57]order at the restaurant we're a walker not a talker we're a walker not a talker you know
[32:01]life's too short it's like the irony is i almost didn't make this
[32:03]like because my watch didn't give me haptic feedback now you're getting haptic feedback
[32:07]the entire flight down there exactly i do stand exactly but i am not lying when i say this this
[32:13]is the worst and this is the second time this has happened to me a little bit different way
[32:18]but the guy next to me across the aisle i'm smelling something and i don't know what i'm
[32:22]smelling but it smells like dog shit and i look on this guy's shoe and his back of his heel he's
[32:29]a big dude he can't see anything with the back of his heel he had he had
[32:33]he's got dog shit all over his shoe and so for that i gotta go from atlanta to palm beach this
[32:40]is like an hour and 10 minute flight and all i can smell because you can't get that out of your nose
[32:45]i mean you can't not smell it and i can't not like look at it he's got fucking dog shit on his shoe
[32:50]and he's in an airplane flying like who wears a shoe what's got dog fucking man is that like a
[32:57]dream team level of this of smells like this is the dream team of smells this is like a
[33:03]david robinson michael jordan they're all the bad smells are there scott
[33:08]christian later floyd and they and all these smells are just like the worst smells you could
[33:17]possibly have on a plane oh gross god the bo guy he told me that he had flew overnight from he was
[33:23]from alaska to minneapolis and minneapolis he was going i don't want to be down to florida you
[33:27]throw in some hot food and some cheesy poofs on that thing and it would have been all over man
[33:31]i think it's bad when that guy was sticking his feet up by your
[33:33]desk and you had spaghetti and then you turned around and there's parmesan in your spaghetti
[33:37]you're like well i don't remember there being parmesan oh gross god oh rolling going that's
[33:44]my rolling going russell rolling going how's it going with you rolling going we're coming up
[33:47]aaron said the holidays are about over for our listeners so i i you know what i need to go to
[33:52]the dating advice corner we were mad that we're talking about something earlier i figured it's
[33:57]been a while it's time for russell's advice corner oh yeah
[34:03]standing desk at full mast and you're in the corner all right so the big question i have is
[34:10]when you're dating someone and if you if you've been seeing them for a little bit you start meeting
[34:14]family members you have to go to family holiday things and whatnot i get that that's part of the
[34:19]game you do that stuff my real question is is how much time do you have to spend at like a in-laws
[34:26]or someone's family holiday event like it's like it's like two hours sufficient four hours a whole
[34:33]day like an overnight how much is the the appropriate amount of time to have to spend with
[34:39]the family of someone that you're seeing i just got i got i think i got a backup just
[34:45]if you guys don't know the whole point of dating somebody i think i think and you guys can stop me
[34:53]if i'm wrong is one for the physical side of it and two because maybe you're gonna get married
[34:59]someday and you know like have kids or something you know i don't know what you know maybe it's
[35:04]maybe it's fur babies maybe it's just things like that i personally need someone to wipe the
[35:08]shit off the back of my shoe yeah we're big guys russell russell do you know what marriage is i
[35:14]mean you're with them non-stop and then you the family's coming to town you i mean you are if
[35:19]you're worried about two hours or even 36 hours let's say from like a friday night to the sunday
[35:24]you're fucked my friend like this is the nightmare we all live in
[35:29]put limitations on it though and say no we're limiting this to like four hours
[35:33]they might put limitations on how long they're gonna keep you around
[35:38]um excuse me i will be doing this but there will be some limitations
[35:42]russell the married guys are laughing at that statement
[35:46]there's got to be some sort of time limit where you you've done your time you can move it along
[35:53]right i think at least two nights russell i think it's two nights yeah yeah you gotta do an overnight
[35:59]in there
[35:59]it's a full day otherwise there's not even a full day in there well here
[36:03]if you have good in-laws and i think some of our in-laws listen and maybe some potential in-laws
[36:11]might be listening to like my in-laws are pretty darn good and they'll be like look
[36:16]i understand there's a football game on why don't you just go downstairs and we'll
[36:20]you know watch kids for a little bit you go watch your football game here's a beer
[36:24]and you know if you've taken a nap for a little bit it sounds great so you know let's just say
[36:29]russell that your potential in-laws happen to listen to this show maybe i i doubt they do right
[36:34]there's just there's no way that could possibly be unlikely there's no chance that that happened
[36:38]but you know maybe they will understand that god bless it you love their daughter
[36:44]love of your life but you know you need just a little bit of a break and maybe they'll just get
[36:49]that hint he's on fire but they'll just and they'll and they'll play along so that maybe
[36:53]you know they'll understand a little bit of time sometime yes he's but i think that the
[36:59]real question is like i get it hey if if joe from woodbury is driving out to wisconsin or something
[37:05]and it's four hours away they probably got to do some family time if barry from burnsville's got
[37:11]to drive down to iowa for some family thing he might have to stay for a night or two but
[37:16]barry just has to go around the corner and so rob your family is not in state aaron your family's
[37:24]not in state matt your family some of them is in state if you live close to them you don't have to
[37:29]spend three days with them right no no see but yeah but it's but you don't live close to russell
[37:36]yes yeah what's the time what's the time limit where you you've got to spend like three days
[37:43]90 minutes over under 90 under 90 minutes is you don't have to stay over 90 minutes drive you got
[37:51]to stay yeah yeah let me do it good russell's like russell's like i just bought a new house
[37:58]it's 89 minutes away
[37:59]i now live in north minneapolis on the north side of the
[38:03]animal refuge matt was talking about i know what russell wants to do he wants to pick her up
[38:09]and kind of wave from the car do like the duck under the kind of waving you're like
[38:13]but not roll the window down there's no window rolling down he's just kind of waving he's like
[38:18]okay this is christmas it sounds like he's on his phone like oh sorry oh yeah yeah i got
[38:23]i'm so busy yeah no russell you're you're stuck with the rest of us that's the way it goes
[38:29]yeah oh well that's not the advice i was hoping for but i appreciate it anyways
[38:34]that's it time's up get out of the corner that wait we can delete all that last part right
[38:40]rob rob will edit it he's good rob's always editing things out
[38:46]rob we don't have time for this let's get to the album i i is that everybody's really going i'm so
[38:52]yeah we're ready to go kind of surprised robert plant never wrote a song about that very topic
[38:55]is it is it time for the rating system is this a music podcast
[38:59]i hope there's a song on here about juice running down his leg listen uh we're talking about led
[39:06]zeppelin or as a lot of sailors call it i uh oh yeah i think that hits now it gets better every
[39:14]time you tell it man so good so listen here's the deal this is led zeppelin's second album
[39:18]their first album they're out touring and basically in stops on their tour they're
[39:22]recording this album in like dozens of studios around the uk around the us all of these things
[39:28]so they have no like they just can't do anything the same so that's why you have so many wild
[39:33]sounds on this album this is also the first album by the way where jimmy page uses less paul
[39:37]uh and then i can't remember what amp he's but he's got a famous less paul sound that he has
[39:42]i think this album has some of the best guitar tone of any album we have listened to the guitar
[39:48]is so good and so clear and it sounds so great it's unbelievable um basically this album is
[39:55]nine songs which rocks it's six original songs and three
[39:58]chicago's blue songs and uh we're just going to talk about i'm just going to tell you right now
[40:03]every one of those songs ended in a out-of-court settlement so it's uh we're gonna go ahead and
[40:08]go there yeah they didn't use the music to educate people which is actually free use okay a lot of
[40:14]people don't know that's fair use okay airball rob don't why do you why do you gotta bring this
[40:19]up you already know we had a panic attack a few weeks ago when our whole podcast was taken down
[40:24]on spotify for the morning i don't know i felt like a weight was lifted off my chest
[40:28]felt so good three of our listeners gone we're not accountable to them anymore
[40:33]yeah and the problem was we were the only ones who noticed the spot the podcast was not on spotify
[40:38]i got i got a few emails for some some super fans let's call them super fans
[40:46]right or super you're at home you're your childhood home you take this album you just
[40:51]got it okay you look at the calendar it says 1969 you go nice okay
[40:58]you put this record on your record player you put on some big cool as headphones and you hear
[41:07]this when you drop the when you drop the needle yes fucking rocks so loud right
[41:18]so let me just say this rap because this is the exact take that i had uh led zeppelin one the first
[41:28]one good times bad times starts out like a banger led zeppelin two you start with this led zeppelin
[41:33]left zed led zeppelin three you start out with immigrants home led zeppelin four you start out
[41:40]with black oh my god they know how to fucking start right let me tell you it is unbelievable
[41:46]they also know how to exit albums we'll talk about that later so
[41:49]exit out exit albums that reminds me of that episode of tool time for richard karn
[41:56]rock rock rock
[41:58]exit album more power there's an interest that song is kind of interesting though like
[42:05]i i recognize it i know that song i don't ever remember the part of the song where there's like
[42:10]three minutes of some weird wind noises like it's a strange song right like it's not all to begin
[42:15]the first minute of the song is there a radio hey drugs are cool russell drugs are cool let me tell
[42:22]you i'm with it give me a second guys i'm typing in a joke
[42:26]i'm typing in a joke
[42:27]i did i did read there was a at about one minute in there's a free form section where it resulted
[42:33]in uh i don't know if it's page and the engineer twiddling every knob known to man and it was known
[42:39]as a freak out rob have you ever twiddled every knob known to man didn't did it result in a freak
[42:44]out how many knobs are on your body though really do you think about it i can think of like three
[42:51]how many can be three three knobs right that could be turned
[42:57]i could turn a lot of stuff on my body russell i could turn a ton now this song you might think
[43:05]oh does that sound a lot like the small faces songs you need loving that was released three
[43:09]years earlier in 1966
[43:10]this is steve marriott the lead singer of the small faces when he left to do humble pie
[43:22]they turned into the faces and picked up ron wood and rod stewart became the faces
[43:27]so here's how do you come up with the name the small faces do you think as a band name i think
[43:34]they were just looking in a mirror a long way away oh okay i mean that's that's what i think
[43:41]this this seems logical led zeppelin and concave led zeppelin and steve marriott settled out of
[43:47]court okay so it's a lot like uh ron artest he's out of court all right so that's a deep cut
[43:53]speaking of ron artest did you guys did i ever tell you that i
[43:57]met him in the middle of the night and i was like oh my god i'm so excited to be here and i'm
[43:57]going to be here in the middle of the night and i'm going to be here in the middle of the night
[43:57]and i'm going to be here in the middle of the night and i'm going to be here in the middle of the night
[43:57]at a conference and i um met with met him talked with him for a while and i actually spent a night
[44:02]smoking cigars with him and some other people around a fire so we're outside we're in salt
[44:07]lake city we're up at a ski resort right north of salt lake city and ron artest meta world peace is
[44:13]there and so a very nice guy there's probably eight of us sitting around this outdoor fire pit
[44:18]and there's this guy who clearly doesn't know anything about basketball most people are just
[44:22]talking about life talking about business no one was really talking basketball stuff with him
[44:26]but there was this one guy
[44:27]he started bringing something up and and meta meta world peace said uh oh yeah i actually got
[44:33]suspended for a season or they were saying like what was the most stressful part of your life and
[44:37]he was talking about how stressed out he was after he got suspended for a season and this guy looks
[44:41]at him he goes what'd you get suspended for oh god he goes well i kind of got in a fight in a
[44:46]stadium the guy had no clue that the guy that was sitting with us was the guy that started
[44:50]meanwhile russell was getting his muscle was getting his cup of ice and it just launched it
[44:56]through the air it was gonna hit him
[44:57]he's like uh-oh should not have done that i will say i think that meeting was great russell when
[45:02]when meta world peace is like well no you definitely have to spend two nights
[45:05]at the in-laws he's like he was like i make bad decisions but i would never spend under two nights
[45:10]you gotta go the worst part was when he grappled me to the ground and started turning all my knobs
[45:14]he was very uncomfortable in a freak out
[45:17]what is and she'll ever be now this has some flange vocals on it which is kind of cool
[45:25]what's flange it's that kind of that
[45:27]wow
[45:27]not that wawa but it's like i mean this is flange oh like that kind of underwater and this is the
[45:34]first led zeppelin song to have robert planned to have writing credit so after this he started
[45:39]writing a lot more of the songs you're ready here it comes hold on turn it up
[45:44]this might be one of the most banger dynamic albums we've listened to i don't know if that's
[45:53]where it plays with tempos it plays with volume
[45:57]maybe better than any album we've listened to don't you guys think
[46:00]listen right here it goes quiet now i mean anytime bottom lays off the snare you're just
[46:10]like whoa and then he plays so fucking loud when he wants to this song also has reverse echo on it
[46:16]they're using that reverse echo that i think we heard in four where the echo actually comes before
[46:20]the sound okay and when you're um high over at a friend's house earlier today trying to explain
[46:26]that to them it's really hard
[46:27]that's what she said the lemon song now we have heard the killing floor so many times yeah i was
[46:38]surprised this wasn't called killing floor no now is that howling wolf in 1972 howling wolf
[46:45]i think so yeah arc music sued led zeppelin for copyright infringement with this song
[46:54]and guys what happened is going to blow your mind
[46:57]they settled out of court oh they did a real runner test
[47:02]but this is weird i mean when when was this released 1969
[47:07]i mean this is after monterey pop like you know when jimmy was playing killing the floor right
[47:13]like yeah how did they think they were gonna get by with this people knew the song by 1969
[47:19]i don't get it because uh i think robert plan is really really smart no he's not he's not smart
[47:27]he's so good looking he can sing like crazy that guy better be dumb as dog shit or i'm gonna be
[47:31]pissed we've talked a lot before about how like bonham's one of the best drummers ever and actually
[47:36]i think we have one of the best percussion moments on this album uh you hear it on three or four
[47:41]songs rob maybe you can go from the beginning it's not what you guys would normally think
[47:44]it's something different in the percussion world what wait what where am i just go to the very
[47:47]beginning of the song play the beginning i don't know i don't know if you guys heard that or not
[47:53]the very beginning yeah it's the
[47:56]their gong you hear that gong yes oh yeah you guys hear the gong on this album i heard it yeah
[48:02]so there's the gongs on like three or four of these songs and i was reading that
[48:07]they actually took that they the first time they toured in the u.s was with a band called
[48:11]vanilla fudge i don't know if you guys have ever heard of them before or not i have but so their
[48:16]drummer carmine carmine app ice was very big on using the gong up on stage and that's where john
[48:23]bonham got that from because they were opening for vanilla fudge and they were opening for vanilla
[48:26]and so i started thinking about the gong and i thought tonight we could make this the gong show
[48:30]by doing a list of the greatest songs ever that feature the gong songs the gong show
[48:37]russell if take a hit from the gong is not on this i'm gonna be so mad
[48:41]it's from actually one song that you would expect to be on this morning where the weed at
[48:46]is reach in my pocket for my fat weed stack because i want to get high like a plane in the
[48:53]sky with that endo cloud on my brain
[48:56]so one song you're not going to hear on this list is by t-rex bang on bang the gong that actually
[49:05]doesn't have a gong in it did you guys know that's outrageous there's no gong in bang the gong that's
[49:10]crazy terrible so first i was trying to wonder do you guys know the difference between a symbol
[49:16]and a gong yeah what is the difference what are you talking about everybody i don't know i didn't
[49:21]know the difference until today what's the difference a gong is one thing you hit with a
[49:26]smoke together right no you're thinking of the high kind of like you and your friend earlier
[49:32]i'm not thinking of a high hat aaron i know what a fucking symbol is i'm thinking of the symbols
[49:36]in the marching band i think technically a symbol is mounted in the center where a gong is mounted
[49:41]on the rims yeah that's the major difference and i was actually reading there are really three
[49:46]types now i have an idea for a bing search later there are three types of gongs a suspended gong
[49:51]where it's suspended vertically oh out of school suspension a bowl
[49:56]gong where it's a bowl shape that lays on a cushion it's actually a boxing ring bell is
[50:00]actually a bowl gong did you guys know that i did not know that that sounds like somebody you
[50:05]i didn't know the definition of a bong until i swear to god bowl gong is the one i could never
[50:10]pass in mike tyson's punch out i could never figure out and in between if you looked if you
[50:16]looked up just above his left shoulder when there was a flash from a camera and every time it flashed
[50:22]three times that's when you had to dodge and then you could that's how you yeah and then they go to
[50:26]like the game you're playing the game now and it's so fun and then they go between rounds and
[50:29]they just say insanely racist stuff and you're like jesus christ i don't remember any of this
[50:33]and then there's a third type of gongs that you can actually turn the knobs on they're called
[50:38]nipple gongs no they're raised in the center and suspended horizontally they're nipple gongs you
[50:43]didn't know that rob excuse me i was taking hit from the gong it turns out there are actually
[50:51]thick and thin gongs large gongs tend to be played with large beaters but
[50:55]not always they use an enormous gong and an enormous variety of beaters and nearly all
[51:01]beaters are smallish i dated large gong uh in my sophomore year kind of as a rebound it's been my
[51:09]experience that people that the irish oh gong is usually not very big oh so small beater for it
[51:16]it turns out that both gongs and cymbals of all sizes can be played with either hard
[51:21]or soft sticks if played properly yeah well it's sometimes
[51:25]it's just you're you party too much that night okay you stayed up too late for a podcast
[51:30]i'm looking up nipple gongs
[51:32]rob's looking up nipple gongs we're going to play the first song on the list normally we don't
[51:38]replay songs that we've talked about before but this one's so awesome we have to replay it from
[51:42]1964 this is john coltrane a love supreme oh yes
[51:47]that's the only beginning just for a second right i think it's the only appearance of the
[51:53]gong on the record
[51:55]and i think aaron if i'm right it's elvin jones is he a member of the coltrane quartet that would
[52:00]have been the percussion player that played the gong yep 100 do you think so i think he
[52:04]but do you think aaron's the only person who knows the percussion player for john coltrane
[52:08]and also can tell us multiple members from cypress hill do you think he's the only person
[52:13]in the world that can do that no that venn diary that there's there are more like me
[52:18]he did pull i want to tell the guys who are listening he did pull the maroon 5 keyboardist
[52:25]last episode and it blew my fucking mind i've been thinking about it all day i i think it's
[52:30]technically called adam levine in the maroons that's right pj morton he's got a great cover
[52:36]how deep is your love jesus i was actually reading though john bonham was heavily influenced by elvin
[52:41]jones and other drummers like him and his style and they specifically said that elvin jones used
[52:46]a lot of those triplets and those triplets are what bonham became famous for aaron isn't that
[52:51]so bonham definitely was influenced by elvin jones isn't that right 100 percent
[52:55]yeah for sure he owned a copy of love supreme and wore it out and other obscurities by elvin
[53:01]jones that i don't even know that's great you know if i was making music instead of using
[53:05]triplets i'd and use twins i had to think about that rob if there were twins i would probably
[53:14]stay overnight if it was less than 150 miles next song on the list this is actually 10 of the 14 songs
[53:25]on this next album actually started with the gong it's james brown the album is hell check out this
[53:30]one of the songs on the list or on that on that album that's a gong 10 songs on one album oh
[53:39]10 of the 14 songs on the hell album started with that just a gong announcing james brown's
[53:46]entrance some people think there's an average of 10 songs on albums i don't know if you guys
[53:49]heard that back if you did 500 well you see rob in the late 80s they had this thing called
[53:54]a compact disc that overtook the record and he were able to record like way 90 minutes of uh
[54:01]of music instead of just the standard 45 so that's why do you think albums started becoming
[54:06]long do you think that's my problem man that i have a compact dick what i do i do
[54:14]does it fit in smaller party spaces or not yeah cds nuts no no no cd stands for compact dick i
[54:21]was in a i here's the thing
[54:24]you think to yourself hey everybody's gonna love it when i take this unicycle off a jump
[54:28]well it turns out not everybody what i smashed my dick bad you know you know what i was reading
[54:36]that the gong show from the 70s was an mbc talent show where uh people who had didn't have good
[54:42]shows would be gonged i remember that for public humiliation or artistic failure so i figured
[54:48]maybe from now on if rob drops a joke that doesn't work we could use the gong signal on him to
[54:52]display artistic failure
[54:54]oh god that scared me that next song on the list this is a song i think we've talked about before
[55:04]it because it features the boogie man don boyce it's from 1973 it's cool in the gang jungle boogie
[55:09]oh yeah wait a minute do i have the wrong one that's the wrong jungle boogie wait a minute i
[55:14]think there's two of them i know and i have it lay down that boogie
[55:21]music to you
[55:24]where did that go i've got this one i've got the second one i don't have the first one so let me
[55:28]just pull it up here jungle boogies don't just wait there's don't don't do his bit this song and
[55:36]i'm going to tell you right now this song as a low voice singer we've talked about this before i am a
[55:40]low voice background singer was one going to be my job this gave me all-time hope
[55:44]this is so good the bass line this is i this is the first thing i learned on a bass was this
[55:54]bass line and i played it a million times and it was fucking awesome every time just listen to this
[55:59]bass
[56:00]and then there's the guy who goes
[56:09]get down that's that's a boogie band don boyce every
[56:14]talked about him before fuck if you jump forward about 30 seconds maybe we can get another uh boogie
[56:20]band impression i i gotta reopen that close tab again now i'll forget it the interesting thing
[56:26]about that song jungle boogie remember last week we were talking about that song bang the drum all
[56:30]day by todd run grin famous football song for the bangles and the colts and the rams all these famous
[56:37]nfl teams those are the only teams that use it um it's interesting i was reading that the bangles
[56:42]in 2014 actually used it for the bangles and the colts and the rams and the rams and the rams and the
[56:44]rams and the rams and the rams and the rams actually used jungle boogie as their extra
[56:46]points song so if they made an extra point they would play the jungle boogie that's a great i
[56:51]why not i guess you gotta celebrate it's so good plus i mean is there no good i suppose they can
[56:58]only play eye of the tiger so much for the bangles or you know what you could play walk like an
[57:04]egyptian and i am doing the walk like an egyptian of folks because that's the bangles and they're
[57:09]probably like that's close enough you know what i mean i said go with manic monday if i'm doing
[57:13]the bangles but we agreed it's a good song it's a good song it's a good song it's a good song
[57:14]okay guys i also read that the bangles that year we're also using a nickelback song after every
[57:23]touchdown so maybe the maybe the jungle boogie wasn't that good look at this so barry from
[57:28]burnsville probably liked it then right yes okay that guy has to like nickelback like a nickelback
[57:32]guy jeez you know you got you guys know that that jungle boogie song is so awesome though
[57:38]because it was once covered by dr teeth and the electric oh yes oh yes
[57:44]and in the video you're gonna see animal go up and just bang the gong right at the very beginning
[57:57]it's fantastic and you know what other that's also interesting remember on the who when we
[58:02]were talking about keith moon how people thought animal was a takeoff on keith moon or some of
[58:08]these other famous drummers there are a lot of people that think he's actually based on maybe
[58:12]john bonham and not keith moon wow
[58:14]russell this is like you're doing good stuff on the podcast i was doing math in a parody song i
[58:20]mean that's kind of where i am you're above me this is like watching pizarro next next song on
[58:26]the list is uh aaron aaron and i used to like this one when we were back in college i think
[58:31]it's still got a pretty cool beat it's ram jam black bed oh yes this is what we played
[58:36]have you seen the video for this yes it's like we are doing a video
[58:44]review of ram jam because it's an unbelievable just right now in your head picture what a band
[58:51]looks like if they're named ram jam like the best nickname they can come up with they're like
[58:55]okay guys this is really important we need a band name and the guy's like ram jam and they're like
[59:00]great love it did no notes that's the perfect band name said nobody the interesting thing about that
[59:07]is that was a cover of is it lead belly he was the famous uh blues artist from back in like the
[59:13]40s is that about right i think so yeah i think so yeah i think so yeah i think so yeah i think so
[59:14]that's right even earlier so that was actually a color cover of his song and i thought we could go
[59:19]back and listen to that song from 1949 the original version it's there's no gong but i thought you guys
[59:24]needed to hear it isn't that badass that's so nice and it's interesting because we've heard how we've
[59:37]heard before how led zeppelin's taken a lot of music from like old blues artists and actually
[59:41]they covered a song once i don't know if you've heard it but i don't know if you've heard it but
[59:44]i forgot the name of it but they covered one of lead belly songs and so robert plant they actually
[59:49]did a tribute to lead belly at the rock and roll hall of fame in 2004 and robert plant was one of
[59:54]the headliners for that and he said what a great way to honor some of the great songs that that
[59:59]lead belly actually provided for us and everyone so i thought that was you know it'd also be a
[60:03]great way to honor him he didn't pay his family some money he's like he's like i'd like to thank
[60:07]lead belly uh they did give me two of my four houses so thank you so much i appreciate that
[60:12]all right last song on the list this is
[60:14]lead belly song and i think it's a great song to listen to i think it's a great song to listen to
[60:14]metallica wherever i may roam check out the gone
[60:17]this is nostalgia for me too and the fact that lars ulrich is playing that
[60:27]makes you smile because he's a great guy not annoying not like a weird thing we're
[60:33]love what we're trying to do here this is really yeah i think lars would really say
[60:36]he's got about the same abilities as john bottom right i believe technically aaron would call him
[60:43]what aaron
[60:44]a shit drummer
[60:46]yeah this is a shitty drummer i think i might call him a shit drummer lars ulrich is the only
[60:51]person who could put me on the side of a program that downloaded hundreds of viruses onto my
[60:56]computer like i downloaded so many viruses trying to get big titty dot jpeg or whatever
[61:02]and i still was like i prefer that over lars ulrich talking about it
[61:08]i was actually reading that metallic was heavily influenced by led
[61:14]i think that's probably pretty clear but headfield said stairway to heaven was his favorite song ever
[61:18]and the first song he ever learned on guitar so i thought that was pretty interesting but then also
[61:23]howard stern was doing an interview once where they were having this big argument about the
[61:26]greatest rock drummer ever and so he actually had lars's number so they called up lars and it came
[61:32]down to neil pert or john bottom and ultimately he said no disrespect to bert but john bottom's
[61:37]greatest rock drummer ever oh wow and russell was another every good drummer
[61:42]and russell was another great drummer
[61:44]and every bad joke needs one too right rob well the time for bad jokes is long gone
[61:50]the i don't know too much about it but the reason they broke up john bottom died like 1980 right and
[61:58]basically they just couldn't play any longer because there wasn't a drummer that could there
[62:03]wasn't even two drummers that could play together that could essentially do what he did that's what
[62:08]i've read you know they've tried and they've kind of dumbed things down but he was so good
[62:12]and so influential for that band you know on top of the the voice and then the guitars that it was
[62:19]just it's unbelievable they couldn't replace him but i think it's really sad about led zeppelin is
[62:22]john paul jones is still alive like he's out there they all they do not like each other they will not
[62:27]play together and his bass playing on this album all three of them are still his bass on this album
[62:32]is so strong i would love to see john paul jones go back out with page and plant like that would be
[62:36]so good uh thank you oh this is my this is my
[62:42]favorite song that i hadn't really heard of until listening to this album the drums are
[62:47]unbelievable now this is john paul jones on organ of course he's a multi-instrumentalist
[62:53]this made gibson's list in 2010 for the top thanksgiving songs this was number one oh
[63:03]when we were talking the other week about a thanksgiving playlist you need to put thank
[63:07]you by let's put this on here dang i messed up yeah it's got a nice vibe
[63:12]should have taken off all those nine inch nail songs you put on and put on this way better
[63:15]uh heartbreaker you got the best of me is this not the mariah song
[63:25]this feels like a weight room classic right like this is my high school weight room a lot
[63:33]i is it do you think you know every sound on this album i might i might know every like guitar solo
[63:39]and right
[63:42]like i know everything on this and basically this song they recorded this solo in a totally
[63:47]different studio so it sounds totally different listen to this solo
[63:50]i mean this guitar tone is crazy right it sounds like stevie ray vaughan
[63:58]better than his old playing after this oh my god this guitar tone is so sharp and just
[64:03]yeah see he's not a technical player though like van halen you can hear that he kind of is
[64:10]more emotional
[64:12]oh man i do have to say that one of my great pleasures in life is watching led zeppelin look
[64:24]more and more like grandmothers as they get older it's kind of funny to think about like my grandma
[64:28]doing a rock band which i i want to remind everybody lmfao is that it is an uncle and
[64:33]nephew who started a rock band together and then they broke up because they got mad at each other
[64:37]so something to think about party rock yeah i mean not the worst
[64:42]no i'm not gonna make that joke all right living loving this song a lot of times
[64:48]that heartbreaker goes right into the song in the radio station this played back to back
[64:53]yeah i think 94.9 kggo played him that way okay this ggo this was jimmy page's least favorite
[65:04]led zeppelin song and it was never ever played live why would it be his least favorite i don't
[65:10]know he just he didn't i
[65:12]guess he's kind of like relegated to rhythm guitar there for a while
[65:16]you think he didn't get enough attention on his album he's like i wish i had more
[65:19]guitar solos i only have three every song like i actually i think i know there's another reason
[65:24]why jimmy page might not be happy oh it turns out that he was actually also the inspiration
[65:32]for a character on our favorite japanese anime show back mongolian so you guys know our favorite
[65:41]anime show
[65:42]our favorite character rikiya was actually a bully attending kyoki's middle school and
[65:46]childhood friend of hyodo yeah he owns a fender guitar at first he's quite hostile towards kyoku
[65:52]he once tried to beat him up and even broke his guitar pick that he had been given as a gift
[65:57]after finding that hyodo had forced kyoko to pay for his damaged guitar he confronted him at the
[66:03]school's cultural festival however they then started a band he was then known as the japanese
[66:10]jimmy page
[66:12]so when it comes to honoring jimmy page what japanese anime show did it better
[66:17]back mongolian chop squad did it and actually rob i believe i gave you a clip
[66:22]of this character who is the japanese jimmy page in the anime show
[66:26]this is rikiya the japanese jimmy page in the anime show back mongolian chop squad it's just
[66:37]crazy that you know all that right off the top does everybody feel high does everybody feel high
[66:42]right that was a wild trip i feel like i did think it was interesting though when you were
[66:47]talking about the school's cultural uh festival aaron kind of popped up he's like oh maybe that's
[66:53]something i could go to like he loves i'm not i'm not busy tomorrow he loves going to school
[66:57]performances it's his favorite thing yes uh let's see i did the very cool thing where i had the
[67:02]led zeppelin in the front of every song name so i can't tell what any of these songs they all just
[67:06]say led zeppelin like it's that's not helpful i know that this is uh no heartbreaker we did that
[67:11]yeah heartbreaker no we did heartbreaker and live and loving and you didn't do the heartbreaker has
[67:18]guitars what was considered the 16th greatest rolling stone said 16th greatest guitar solo
[67:22]wait are we going back like three songs wait what i think we're on i think we're on ramble on no i do
[67:29]feel like i'm super high are we just doing the same thing over again wait do you guys want me
[67:35]to rerun my back mongolian chop squad is the top still spinning yeah right off the top of your head
[67:40]ready go you did living love
[67:41]we did didn't we okay here we go okay and now one that actually is named after our podcast
[67:48]ramble on this song is so good this is one of my favorite let's have the bass just
[67:55]voice
[67:58]dynamic right yep it sets up these amazing riffs and it's just gonna be better than any album ever
[68:09]it sounds like sunshine and traveling and having fun is he the quintessential lead singer
[68:15]i mean i think yeah he inspired a whole generation like people were trying to live up to him right
[68:21]i mean he's got the look he's got the voice he's writing songs about fucking lord of the rings
[68:28]i mean that fucking rules this guy is writing songs about gollum
[68:32]and lord of the rings and then is going back to his hotel room and going to town on three to four
[68:39]groupies a night can you imagine anyone else where if you were like hey check out the song i made about
[68:43]lord of the rings that you're just getting you're just getting more ass than a toilet seat think
[68:49]about that or more cocaine than uh than uh someone who takes it in rectum user hey rob can you replay
[69:00]that quick that's the song clip you just played yeah uh this is the 16th greatest guitar solo of
[69:05]all time okay sorry uh yeah
[69:09]ramble on here we go yeah
[69:10]what's that pitter patter that drum beat is so unique isn't it
[69:15]i was i don't know what it was but i heard people people read that or people thought it was like
[69:22]he was hitting his shoes with drumsticks people thought he was hitting a garbage can lid
[69:26]what i read was that he was actually using his bare hands on the guitar case that's what that
[69:32]that's it that's the whole thing oh man that's what i read yeah wow russell god damn russell
[69:37]you're good at this podcast
[69:39]uh research so this is the 16th greatest guitar solo of all time
[69:43]all right not funny actually now this song a lot of people say this is the greatest drum solo of
[69:53]all time in concert now russell i don't know what do you think about this the drum solo would be 10
[69:57]minutes all the way up to 30 minutes would you be able to sit through a 30 minute drum solo russell
[70:04]oh man i think so i actually wrote in my notes there that you
[70:08]have every reason to not like this song because the drum solo goes on forever but it it keeps you
[70:14]engaged this is usually not a drum solo person but it's so good this moby dick is such a good song
[70:26]and so basically they would play the opening and then they would leave and it's great because if
[70:31]you watch the uh the led zeppelin there's a documentary about them and it's not that
[70:35]when the west was one it's the earlier one and basically they just
[70:38]go off stage and then they're just smoking for like 15 minutes while john bonham is playing and
[70:42]he's like dripping sweat they're kind of sitting there having a nice and then ronard test shows up
[70:47]i think he goes by meta world peace oh yeah and meta world peace shows up and somebody said oh
[70:55]is that your oh call me on our test meta world peace is my dad's name uh all right technically
[71:01]we are we are linkedin friends or connected via linkedin now don't everybody's gonna dox you
[71:08]world peace is linkedin friends they're gonna find you
[71:11]jeez that's true there can't be that many russells
[71:15]your uncle's gonna be pissed all this what do you think meta world peace is linkedin says
[71:20]like uh uh power forward tell you uh pivot tables you know what i mean no because he's
[71:27]an entrepreneur now entrepreneur steve that's steve i think he's met him a few i mean that's
[71:34]technically we bet we probably better stay away yeah
[71:36]never really giving people's identities away speaking of my uncle though it turns out this
[71:43]will be after the holidays i believe my uncle had one request for his birthday his birthday
[71:49]this might be on his birthday but whatever his birthday is the day after christmas so it could
[71:54]be the day this comes out he had one request okay from his daughter my cousin okay that he
[72:02]wanted one gift for the holidays okay russell will play all i want to do is make love to you
[72:06]i don't know why i wanted to hear that that is so weird his request was he wanted a beck did it
[72:12]better t-shirt for the for his birthday that was his one birthday request wow what a fan what a
[72:19]super fan and we love our fans and they're nice and cool and that so that is great so our fan
[72:24]cousin asked me she said can you get me one she wouldn't just go buy one off the store because i
[72:28]don't think our store exists so i had to i had to buy some new shirts yeah wait you're on the show
[72:36]shirts i actually bought a handful of shirts and i was actually going to see if you guys wanted to
[72:41]buy some new ones for you to send out but then i remembered how stressed i got last time when i had
[72:46]to go to the post office and i was like i'm not doing that again you know what russell what you
[72:52]have to you have to start pushing those things outside of your life you can't you can't deal
[72:56]with all the stresses of of those things you you did a great thing there by pushing that out of
[73:01]your life the stress of both worlds that you live so podcast in the real world let me get this straight
[73:06]you took the image from the store that i run and you just went and made your own shirts with them
[73:12]i made my own shirts a year and a half ago i believe rob remember yeah well now actually
[73:18]that is now a copyright infringement so i have to actually put that on your linkedin technically
[73:24]rob they may be shirts that you did not get your in-laws for the holidays but maybe russ might have
[73:29]beat you to it oh oh shots fired why would you why would you be why would you be talking to rob's
[73:36]mother-in-law wait wait wait i got them standing desks i thought they'd like that
[73:43]isn't hers yeah they're like i have hemorrhoids i said well here's a standing desk i don't know
[73:51]these go together in my mind for some reason this one jacks you off
[73:56]listen i ain't just gonna say this if an item jacked you off you would pay double for it
[74:05]hey i'll sell you this couch for two thousand or a couch that jacks you off for four thousand
[74:10]wait what
[74:14]you can't pick up our guests don't know exactly what we're talking about it's gonna be funny in
[74:20]a couple weeks you can't pick anything about the couch but it will jack you off and it will
[74:25]do a good job but it's double the price does it matter if it's like cloth versus leather
[74:30]there's only one thing i mean if you're looking for options and something that jacks you off
[74:35]you have that in cream okay yeah on top bad one uh bring it on home now this song of the same name
[74:46]was recorded by blue's great sunny boy williamson now it's going to shock you what happened between
[74:50]the plan zeppelin and sunny boy williamson there's no way no no way no way oh i think this is a great
[75:04]ending song
[75:05]i don't even know this song that well and it rocks
[75:13]i mean what's the worst song on this album
[75:17]i think i think some of the some of the interludes with the weird wind noises there's some strange
[75:25]parts in the middle of songs right yeah we're playing the highlights and there is some filler
[75:30]even within the lemon song is the worst okay the rest of them right i mean is this a song it's a
[75:35]great album isn't it matt russell's this is a song where if we got rid of all the other albums and
[75:38]said this is the best album that i think it's possible right you could argue this is a top
[75:43]20 album right yeah absolutely i mean i think so for sure it's all killer and some filler with wind
[75:48]noises i mean i don't know i don't know i mean when we talk led zeppelin four i think there's
[75:53]like three or three of the first four songs on that are like all timers right so i don't know
[75:57]how you compare two to four but this this album is fantastic it was a it's incredibly you know what
[76:03]we're gonna rate it
[76:05]okay just like we want to do with all art right aaron everybody's favorite part of the show
[76:10]the pandemic and very popular beck did it better okay don't get your knobs all twisted we're
[76:16]getting into the ratings
[76:17]that happened to me my sophomore year of college
[76:23]did you get you got a shot for it no shots did it to me
[76:30]no on four one two
[76:35]three four all right so listen it is time for the rating system and of course we are talking about
[76:41]led zeppelin two which a tragic story actually on the deck of the edmund fitzgerald the captain said
[76:51]well boys it's been good to know you and then he said guys what album are you listening to back
[76:56]there and they said ah it's led zeppelin and he's like which which one and they said aye aye
[77:04]and he said aye aye
[77:06]oh no oh no that's brutal so if you think this album was as good as that joke okay this album
[77:13]should have been way higher on the list maybe number one joke of all time and album i bet i
[77:17]know who likes that joke okay the pleasure principle the bat the bath pager i thought
[77:24]you bet he loves those robo-dubberals
[77:25]uh uh m m x v no m x x m i x x 69 no l i l i x x
[77:42]69 okay l x i x
[77:50]69
[77:50]i mean can you imagine
[77:53]can you imagine that you're like a guy and you're chipping in some of us some of us are
[77:57]chipping into something so funny that the idea of roman numerals would be at your math majors it's
[78:02]like i get this calculus but this roman numeral is driving me crazy sine cosine roman numerals
[78:09]so god told my friend just got a compact disc so i'm worried about that too
[78:14]he's on his unicycle here's the deal if you think that those jokes were as good
[78:19]as this album and therefore the best it's a package deal okay you know that this is
[78:23]rolling uh uh you know that this is rolling uh boned it should have been way up higher on the
[78:30]list if you think that this would be like trying to make calendars back in the roman times and
[78:36]you're chipping away right you're chipping away and you look at the calendar and it says l i x x
[78:41]and you turn your body you go nice uh that is that would be that would be a hard job and just like
[78:47]this album is not very good this album would be rolling ron you did not think it was very good so
[78:53]let's play that let's play that i want to do is make love to you and that was a second gift so
[78:58]that was a little another package under your tree for your uncle russell uh so here's the deal if you
[79:03]think this album what's left if you think this album is great where it is one two three okay
[79:11]do re me uh and you know who's saying that song rob any hope of us doing two episodes you were
[79:17]just stopping god right now okay then we're not gonna talk about mommy's milk in that song okay
[79:23]um one two three glass of mommy milk please give me that good dr comrade that is a rolling well
[79:30]toned it is perfect right where it is okay what do you think this album led zeppelin ii rolling well
[79:37]toned rolling boned or rolling grown russell what do you think and please let's hurry this up i
[79:41]thought this was an incredibly dynamic album they knew exactly the perfect time to slow it down and
[79:46]then ramp it back up anytime you thought maybe this song was getting too slow all of a sudden
[79:50]it kicked in and just blew your mind the the music was a little bit slow and then it was a little bit
[79:52]better and i think it was awesome on it this is probably the most pissed off i've been on the list
[79:57]and it it comes back to we talked about this a few weeks ago with elvis costello the radio head if you
[80:02]pulled a hundred people how many of those people are gonna say that elvis costello album was better
[80:07]than this one zero there's no there's no way get the out of here right like
[80:12]this is ridiculous and what percentage of those people who have glasses that look just like aaron's
[80:22]hat everybody i don't know for me this should be way higher on the list i really enjoyed it i'd
[80:28]come back and listen to it again and i think it's better than a number of the albums we've listened
[80:33]to in the last few weeks man what do you think rolling well-toned rolling boned or rolling grown
[80:36]led zeppelin two uh rolling boned i mean this is an awesome album you know admittedly this hits
[80:43]exactly the kind of music i like some long drawn out rock and roll music with a great singer and so
[80:50]it it's it is certainly something that i would listen to again i mean the whole week i've been
[80:55]listening to led zeppelin one through four on repeat basically um because i just think
[81:01]all of it is so good so absolutely rolling boned and exactly what russell's i like to
[81:06]think of man in the hospital he's like please get me iv and they come in and they have a
[81:12]needle and he's like what are you doing i wanted to drop that zeppelin ivy uh please help me number
[81:20]two my culinary ash help me number two everybody i i i fell in the pit that looked it was covered
[81:29]in cocaine it was all right here's the deal m-i-x-x aaron aaron needs a ring aaron rolling
[81:35]well-toned rolling bone or rolling groaning keep in mind aaron okay keep in mind this is
[81:42]the 16th greatest guitar solo okay
[81:45]this guitar solo could drive a car
[81:50]i think it's the 16th greatest guitar solo
[81:52]i think it's the 16th greatest guitar solo
