The Beastie Boys: Paul’s Boutique (1989)

Beck Did It Better Podcast 1989
About this episodeHEY LADIES and gentlemen! Today we are becoming the best podcast about Paul's Botique by the evolving Beastie Boys. We talk about how this is another album where the artists got to do what they want and showed why they are on the Rolling Stone Top 500 list!  But first, the guys talk about a bunch of smart stuff like personal grooming, personal growth in a gi, personal cleaning in the basement, and whether or not someone would take it personally if your gift is more of a concept instead of a gift.  Call 802 277 Beck and leave a message so we love you and buy a shirt from the store here. [00:25]i'm big low energy guy

[00:28]and i'm sitting next to my friend big will you should make fun of people with low voices and

[00:35]don't listen to the intro song i did big william i'm a big bill in 2020 four friends decide to

[00:42]listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums is decided by rolling stone magazine this results

[00:46]in a text chain that's celebrating the music excoriated the order and led us to making this

[00:49]podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research all opinions are our own unless

[00:54]you disagree

[00:55]please sit back and enjoy beck did it better we are all the way up to album 125

[01:02]four i think 125 125 all the way up to album 125 and from 1989 it's the album that showed us the

[01:11]beastie boys were more than drinking that brass monkey there is no voice intro to this so you just

[01:17]got to listen there's no k-rob there's no nothing we just get right into the business turning on k-rob

[01:21]and i want to say this russell yeah when you're thinking

[01:24]about the music excoriated the order and led us to making this podcast we are far from it

[01:25]when you're going through and editing this episode and be like oh what did rob say we got to get rid of

[01:28]this or that the other thing just remember this doesn't come off like four weeks so you got four

[01:33]weeks to deal with this okay you could just think about it you can roll it around for four weeks

[01:36]just really kind of savor it okay let's not make judgments maybe right away or like get mad at

[01:41]people or whatever you've got it all right here we go let's turn on k-rob russell sleep

[01:55]her parents

[01:58]now you've heard about me let me tell you a little something about my feelings about sleeping over

[02:07]over the holidays holiday season i can't deceive them i won't sleep at their parents for any reasons

[02:13]about three hours visit is an appropriate time any longer than that and i would be 24 hours there

[02:19]too long of a duration i'm not doing this during my vacation we might as well just talk to them

[02:25]on zoom instead of us sleeping in separate rooms i would be happy to go home late instead of sleeping

[02:31]in your brother's bunk bed i'll say for now that as long as we last i'll never go there because

[02:36]the parents are a fan of this podcast oh

[02:39]russ won't sleep

[02:42]her parents

[02:48]when you want the greatest albums of all time

[02:53]russ

[02:54]now did you hear the russ impression

[03:01]i mean if i can make a computer sound like russ think about it guys the future is now

[03:08]ai is taking over did it better now listen i've got uh i'm here back to the better we're talking

[03:15]about paul's boutique i've got three guys here who thought this album was about serving soup

[03:19]hey ladles

[03:24]i made this into a loop so we can say hey anything

[03:29]sounds like a sample of jenny doing dishes while we're podcasting back there

[03:34]did we get that cleared or not rob hey jenny yeah this is a sample uh listen i've got uh

[03:43]matt in minneapolis matt how are you doing uh good robin one time homie that's how it goes

[03:48]just want to let you know

[03:49]someone's been paying attention to an album this week

[03:54]got a beastie boys fan on their hands i'm like the maxwell guy sitting in the chair and i'm getting

[03:59]blown back by man's energy i love it i'm feeding off of it i've got russell minnesota russell how

[04:05]are you doing guys there's more to this podcast than our listeners will ever know and i've got

[04:10]more hits than sadaharo oh yes but not more wins than brad ragkey or saves than rick aguilera as

[04:16]we discussed a few weeks ago those about to listen we navel salute you listen when you navel salute

[04:24]you

[04:24]when you um uh are listening and if you're big nine inch if the venn diagram of you is nine inch

[04:31]nails plus twins baseball from the uh 2000s late 90s 2000 that episode was chef's kiss

[04:38]okay because we know you like masturbating so that was no there's no doubt about that one

[04:42]now listen i've also got in california i've got aaron now aaron has been telling me about a

[04:48]business he started in his attic now matt aaron has started a business in his act did you hear

[04:52]about this one did you hear about this did you read about this i did not

[04:54]so aaron started a business his attic he makes yachts the sales are through the roof

[05:00]i get it i got you i got you why would you do that to your house rosie i just build it out in

[05:08]your backyard i didn't want to laugh over that when our listeners could have just enjoyed the

[05:13]pregnant pause instead well it's yacht yacht's your problem not you know please say something

[05:20]i'm begging uh i also wanted to shout out the side of our o-line but russell got to it but i do want

[05:25]to give rob props for not mentioning his opening song so way to go right i appreciate you i'm here

[05:32]i'm here to help um real gross let's get into our voicemail the freaks on the phone

[05:41]i gotta make a nice voicemail song i cannot think of one i cannot think of a nice song though

[05:47]the phone's kind of nice this one's pretty short but i think it's interesting and this is a

[05:53]hypothetical what would you do if your boyfriend pulled up the world cup on his phone while you

[05:58]were at brunch does this mean he has to spend more time with my family now russell i what would you

[06:04]say theoretically if you were at brunch with a boyfriend and they pulled up a world cup game now

[06:09]i do want to point out this caller did also send a photo what um the caller sent a photo of said

[06:17]phone oh um and we can see it right here here we are at brunch and he's got the drink no we've got

[06:24]the phone that that's a that phone looks familiar to me i feel like i've seen that it looks like a

[06:28]it looks like a phone propped against a cocktail yeah showing a soccer game and multiple water

[06:35]glasses spread out around the table so nobody sits there back so that's a move we of course

[06:39]know as the russell so it looks like this person's asking for dating advice about how you guys would

[06:44]handle it if you guys were out to brunch with your your partner your girlfriend your spouse

[06:47]and they pulled up something and started watching a game i believe the text very clearly said

[06:52]boyfriend yeah i think boyfriend i i i if if my uh spouse pulled up a soccer game and started

[06:59]watching it during the bar i would immediately stab that thing with a knife because i know it's

[07:02]an alien invader and it's taken over her body and it's trying to assimilate um nobody in my house

[07:09]was interested in watching the world cup i said a number of times this is the greatest sporting

[07:12]event in our lifetimes this is one of the best matches you'll ever see period and everybody was

[07:17]telling me to be quiet and put on my headphones and please not talk anymore so russell is it

[07:21]acceptable erin let me ask you this is it acceptable to pull out your phone at a bar

[07:24]and watch a soccer game i think if it's the world cup final it is but i think interesting if it's

[07:30]the world cup final it goes okay i gotta say it's a major l of your on your date to not take you to

[07:37]a place that has tvs forcing you interesting or whoever this person is let's just say this person

[07:42]okay let's call them uh let's call them bustle okay let's force you bustle to

[07:47]take out their phone at the bar and solve the problem themselves and really ingenuity

[07:52]caring you're saying if if best forces bustle to take the phone out of the bar maybe maybe best

[07:58]at fault i think the date is at fault absolutely hypothetically hypothetically russell i have

[08:04]learned over the years that this is completely and highly inappropriate completely and highly

[08:10]and i condemn such careless acts of

[08:17]compliance to you know the date you know the whole premise of the date and therefore you're

[08:24]gonna have to learn man to just put these things on the calendar so that when you have your shared

[08:28]calendar as long as it's on the calendar man that's gold and you're you're safe i can tell you

[08:33]unfortunately i my wife and i have a shared calendar and you know what it says uh today

[08:38]what if i could turn back time if i could find a way and i was like is this what a shared calendar

[08:46]is this is totally different than what i thought

[08:47]this is crazy would would you take all back all the words that he heard you and you'd say

[08:56]if you think that you could if it's like i wonder if i could jack off to an aircraft carrier not

[09:01]just michigan state opening the season that video says the answer is yes because she is dressed sexy

[09:08]as hell on that aircraft carrier that's all i remember you know what i said after i finished

[09:14]jacking off to share on the aircraft carrier i hope i don't run into any

[09:17]gypsies tramps or thieves mission accomplished accomplished i get it the first better than that

[09:24]one yeah i had a banner my family came downstairs i saw the banner they go fuck dang it i hope that

[09:29]when you edit this you just jack uh matt's vocal track as loud as possible because you really gave

[09:33]an excellent you know i have to know you know i have to got a jacket rob jacket my family comes

[09:40]down they see the banner and they're like they're like it's so humid down here why is it humid in

[09:44]the basement we have the dvd fire running full speed

[09:47]why was the door locked if you guys don't ever take out your phone while you're out on a date

[09:52]to watch a game do you always purposely go to a place that has tvs and appropriately place where

[09:57]you're sitting or how do you pull that off uh no rob rob uh uh let me let me take this one

[10:03]i uh i i fully enjoy being with the person that i'm with and realize that it's just a fight today

[10:11]or something it's just a silly just a silly sporting event russell and you know it'll come

[10:17]you can see the highlights on you know s spin later on that day something like that but russell when

[10:22]are you going to hear how it's going at work i mean that's that's the special one-on-one day that

[10:27]you need oh please tell me about your day at work today i swear to god i heard a story the other day

[10:35]i was walking the dog this story took the entire walk and it was like if imagine driving from like

[10:40]minnesota to texas but every exit you just got off and kind of spun around a little bit then got back

[10:46]on the highway went down that's what the whole thing was like and i was like oh my god i'm so

[10:47]this story was like like if there's an exit you could take it was token and we kind of spun around

[10:52]and the story took so long it was crazy what was it about rob oh i cannot i do not remember that's

[11:00]what i'm going to say the fifth i mean was it about like a work thing or was it like a just

[11:05]like russell's paper bag i plead the fifth listen here's the thing this may have to be deleted can

[11:11]i say something i'll definitely be deleted yeah you're fine you're in a safe space we don't have

[11:17]time let's get into rolling going why would you do such a thing so so a person i know they're a

[11:26]runner and we're talking on the phone once and they were telling me how they made this new playlist

[11:32]on their phone so they could you know stay inspired while they're running like matt we've

[11:36]talked before there's certain bands you like running to aaron and rob i know rob loves

[11:41]lifting to certain groups aaron loves doing his arm band stretches or his burpees whatever he does

[11:47]certain music but not a thing yep but this person was telling me about this new playlist they were

[11:52]doing and i was like oh what's on it and they started telling me the songs on the list and

[11:57]they listed every song and i timed it on my phone nine and a half minutes of them just listing every

[12:03]song on the playlist no i think the playlist was nine that's as long as the playlist telling you

[12:10]about it was nine and a half minutes how many songs are on this thing 90 an uninterrupted speaking of

[12:17]song on the list for nine and a half minutes i mean just go into a meditative state welcome

[12:22]to serious relationship russell you you're now over the threshold now i can tell you what not

[12:28]to do at that point russell don't say that was a really good story can you tell it again because

[12:32]that gets you in a ton of trouble i'll just say that right now i actually said i missed one song

[12:37]in the middle after like whatever after the rocky suck could you repeat it from that point on

[12:41]what was the best song on the playlist uh sorry isn't it rolling going time rob you want to hit

[12:47]that

[12:47]how about the best song how about one song name one song in the list

[12:53]you know we don't have time

[12:55]russell's like holy shit this thing's going to penalty kicks like in the middle of the list

[13:03]it's all right we can delete it there was

[13:08]okay let's get into rolling going oh

[13:13]i was going to tell you about how i

[13:17]have been sports gambling at the bar with my family watching a football game on a tv

[13:21]and then when the food comes i go yes everybody thinks i'm cheering for the oysters but

[13:27]all right i got a story for you though rob you were you're talking about that like so you started

[13:32]power lifting i believe maybe before your wife did and then she she started doing it and you

[13:36]guys really enjoyed doing it together you think you would really enjoy sports gambling if your

[13:41]wife all of a sudden got super into it and now you guys spend all your time talking sports gambling

[13:45]you know what i really do i think i'm gonna be the last

[13:47]you know what i really do i think i'm gonna be the last

[13:47]oh yeah like imagine you're doing parlays you want to see whose parlays are better oh my god i

[13:53]think that'd be like if i turned to something i was like hey listen i think greg joseph is going

[13:57]to score over seven and a half points this week and they go what do you talk about that we talk

[14:01]about that that would be awesome do you think she would be ever be up for a three-team teaser

[14:06]uh listen rolling going aaron how's it going with you

[14:12]it's going great i did have the tiniest bit of trouble in paradise tonight uh it was

[14:17]a lot of night at the house so that means we do vincent no yeah so we do we do one beef and one

[14:25]veggie and so it russell started this is so weird time to serve up the enchiladas and and my lady

[14:31]says i said you want one or two and she says i'll have one and a half do you know how hard it is to

[14:36]get one and a half enchiladas out of the first of the pan of enchiladas and serve them up on the

[14:41]plate nice it was difficult but that's not what i'm here to talk about that i am here to talk about

[14:47]i don't want to have to do this you guys i don't i don't want to have to use our position as please

[14:54]quit please quit please listen matt would follow suit so fast some of our listeners know that we

[15:03]are not the only uh famous media personalities who graduated from the same school that we did

[15:09]we have a classmate who is now a well-known blogger about royal style right and my

[15:17]sister happens to be a huge fan of this person so my sister asked me she heard on the on an

[15:22]appearance that we went to the same school as this person so my sister was like do you know her

[15:26]heck yeah i know her we lived in the same dorm freshman year yeah she dated a guy who i who i

[15:31]was friends with like we talked a lot so i thought okay for christmas maybe i can get a gift for my

[15:39]sister from this semi-famous person so i send her an email and the email associated with her website

[15:45]and i say can i buy

[15:47]a signed copy of your book i don't get a response from the email so i try the instagram direct

[15:52]direct messages i'm not a beggar i'm not saying will you give me something i say can i buy a signed

[15:58]copy of your book still no response so now i have to do it i have to use our bully pulpit i have to

[16:04]use the power of this podcast to call her out and say elizabeth holmes give me a response why are

[16:11]you not responding to me when i just want to purchase a nice signed copy of your book oh

[16:16]that's it's time to use

[16:17]all the clout of this podcast to get air behind i'm not i don't i don't want free stuff i just

[16:25]want to do a nice thing for my sister who's a fan of her do you want all of our listeners to reach

[16:30]out to her on social media and ask like it's just a call to action why and say why are you being

[16:35]mean to rosie what's going on what did he do to you yeah you sick fuck nobody's mean to aaron

[16:41]you know what i mean like that's it nobody should be doing that and actually if you are

[16:45]his family gets mad and it makes you hurt more

[16:47]when his wife is mad at you than when he is that's actually worse i don't miss you yet uh

[16:52]and i would also remind you this is the elizabeth holmes the fashion person not the person who was

[16:57]arrested for theranos who correct thank you hey everybody i made me run in theranos i'm doing

[17:04]blood testing at that point when you heard that voice you had to know listen this person doesn't

[17:08]know what they're talking about right no genius has ever sounded like hey how are you doing they

[17:13]like they're on steroids that's not you just had to know like this lady's fucked up

[17:17]like now aaron would it help you if it's possible that one of your co-hosts made out with her

[17:22]in college oh i mean that at least i've been told do not remember or i mean this person doesn't

[17:28]remember i i think that would be important information maybe i could use maybe i could

[17:32]use that on my quest i keep wondering i keep reading the blog to see if she's going to bring

[17:36]it up but uh she hasn't yeah somehow it doesn't doesn't seem to can you imagine

[17:42]can you imagine you just like you wake up and you look over and you have made out with me

[17:47]like you just be like i need to get out right you just be like i'm in a place i gotta do something

[17:54]have you guys ever have you guys ever uh emailed or written someone for an autograph or a gift like

[18:00]this before no i have when i was a kid yeah when i was a kid we did this kind of like reading thing

[18:08]and we did this thing where we would reach out to celebrities and say like hey we're looking

[18:12]for an autograph thing to use as a prize and like you know if you read so many books and

[18:17]books for our school oh my god you found mr book right like one letter and then that summer i took

[18:23]that letter as like a template and then just blasted it out to like a hundred pro athletes

[18:28]i got one autograph card back who what who was it who was it kent her back

[18:35]barry sanders autograph card and it was do you guys remember sports illustrated for kids it

[18:42]had the magazine it had the cards like the nine like kind of uh from out yeah

[18:47]perforated cards it was a barry sanders perforated card from sports illustrated with the barry

[18:53]sanders autograph do you still have that i don't think i have it i don't know where it's at

[18:57]that's that is awesome russell like that you don't know where it's at

[19:02]oh my god i think i think i think elizabeth holmes stole it i don't know which one but

[19:07]you know i was much bigger fan of katie holmes than elizabeth holmes so i don't

[19:11]i'm not sure if i could pick up elizabeth holmes or remember who she was but um did

[19:17]like all those scientologists does she does she i mean do we know if she sold like a million copies

[19:25]of this book or like is she like uber popular like doing this or is it like a a semi-popular

[19:31]thing or what you know like her main job she's popular enough where she doesn't give a fuck that

[19:36]aaron has tried to contact her a number of ways like that is clearly yeah like if somebody if

[19:41]somebody emailed this podcast instagram message and like i don't know what called the backline

[19:45]we would do whatever they said

[19:47]if they were like hey aaron should like eat a bag of dog shit we'd be like no the person

[19:52]contacted us three times we should think about yeah i just feel like i i work in a job where

[19:56]people email me right and if i don't know i could give a fuck right but like if there's any sort of

[20:01]connection like hey you know like i see that you went to st olaf and my sister's brother's

[20:06]stepsister went there too you know kind of a thing like yeah so then like then i always feel

[20:11]like i have to like reach out or you know respond to the email or whatever kind of a deal so

[20:17]level where she doesn't have to or she doesn't remember me that's also a possibility yeah did

[20:22]you send her a picture with the hair or without the hair she sent her a picture of rob maybe that

[20:26]would help listen i know that we have a couple listeners okay that are indeed in contact with

[20:32]her okay or were at some point and they were happy you know who i'm talking about up in brainard you

[20:38]are going to be happy to reach out to her and get aaron a signed copy and save the day save the day

[20:45]save the day please help me out appreciate it

[20:47]appreciate you guys aaron wants a free book he doesn't want to pay for it okay he wants it for

[20:50]free do this connection multiple times that's enough of my sob story how's it rolling going

[20:55]with russell rolling going things are going good i actually went and saw a play a holiday play i

[21:01]noticed i'm wearing a holiday hat an elf hat rob and aaron appear to be wearing a santa hat i just

[21:07]want to be clear this episode is coming out i think around valentine's day so we are all wearing

[21:12]santa hats except for man who's not in the season i knew that and therefore i you know i didn't want

[21:17]to be a santa hat i didn't want to be a santa hat i didn't want to be a santa hat

[21:17]in the spirit yeah matt's doing what he does to celebrate which is shaving his

[21:22]nutsack for valentine's day he's getting in the spirit it's like two eggs brian brian from

[21:30]woodbury can call in yes is there anything better than a shaved nutsack god it just feels too when

[21:37]you're done

[21:38]did you say two

[21:43]i mean one is good

[21:47]right one's good two's gonna be great

[21:49]no that literally is what we do in hotel showers when jenny and i are done with a hotel shower

[21:59]it looks like a barber shop it's in there it looks it looks like there's a spot to do it

[22:05]it looks the spot oh yeah yeah it's it's it's just towels you got towels you can destroy

[22:11]not your own towels things like that and we're sliding around like two eels there's no friction

[22:15]whatsoever nothing could stop us

[22:17]it's like a hot dog for the rollers that's what it feels like it is it having a shaved crotch feels

[22:23]like you're you're on the hot dog roller it's like huh this is good this is smooth this is great and

[22:27]then about a day later you're like this is the worst feeling i've ever had in my life yeah this

[22:31]is so itchy it everything is rubby it feels like like 80 grit sandpaper not great and guess what

[22:38]nothing happened like there has never been a time where i shaved like my nuts that they've been like

[22:43]okay it's time to nut time and i'm like no it's just me like

[22:47]she's like oh my god there's so much hair in the bathroom gross i'm going to bed i hate you

[22:51]i'm like this is the opposite effect this is not nut time

[22:54]but look at how good i mean and here's the other thing too is like oh now look how good my nuts

[22:59]look please come on are you really gonna say that look at these they yeah they look good no they

[23:06]don't they don't they look like something fell out of you and is barely hanging on everything

[23:12]else looks bigger right yeah it's like oh you know what i love is a patch of skin that is somehow both

[23:17]very tight and very stretchy at the same time it doesn't make any sense

[23:19]this is russell's doing a great rolling gun it's so excited to hear

[23:26]i don't even know how to pivot to what i want to talk it's shaped like a brain and a deflated

[23:32]balloon depending on the temperature it makes no sense you can get you can get you can catch

[23:38]water in it now like a bird bath now listen if you are elizabeth holmes and you're listening

[23:41]to this episode because somebody tagged you okay oh no this is why we deserve free stuff

[23:46]from you please send aaron a free book signed you just want it free you'll pay i'll pay i have

[23:51]offered i'm not a beggar aaron don't aaron you're a superstar okay you're the star of this show don't

[23:57]say something you're gonna pay that's right yeah free stuff go ahead russell i'm sorry there was

[24:02]one other thing i wanted to get your guys advice on uh maybe i don't know if we don't mean to go

[24:06]to the advice corner for it but i figured i could get your opinion on it we can we want to go to the

[24:10]advice corner why not should we go to the advice corner yeah let's do it we got time for the advice

[24:16]corner it's cold out that corner is probably 90 degrees so it probably probably is too late to go

[24:21]there it's especially cold when you're freshly freshly shorn down there right right might be a

[24:28]good might be a good night in minnesota here to go to the corner advice corner the advice corner

[24:33]so in different places it's confusing the advice the advice i need is about concerts coming up so

[24:39]i noticed uh you know there's a number of concerts coming up a couple of them that i don't really

[24:43]need advice but i wanted to mention was one crash crash crash crash crash crash crash crash crash

[24:46]crash test dummies matter coming up maybe we can go see the crash test dummies and get your

[24:51]impression maybe you can drop it on us once real quick i feel like i know one song though what's

[24:56]what song which one would you be good would you be going for which one would you be going for one

[25:02]that's my problem going for one song because once there was this girl who

[25:13]wouldn't come and

[25:16]see the concert because we only have one good song it's one of the weird concerts where you're

[25:25]getting drinks for every song except for the encore you're like okay and can you imagine like

[25:31]if you had to go to the bathroom and you missed that song oh my god that'd be the worst some of

[25:38]the other shows that i saw were coming up that i thought would be interesting i might have to check

[25:41]out the last waltz they're doing the last waltz by the band at first have what would you get sick of

[25:46]that that'd be awesome that'd be pretty cool it'd be awesome but again yeah it's like a you know cover

[25:52]band doing the last waltz kind of a thing and so fun though it'd be good it could be could be good

[25:57]i mean worst comes to worst you're gonna hear a good hawk impression hawkins impression where the

[26:02]guy comes in he's like he's wearing that cowboy hat oh so great the the other the other one that's

[26:07]coming up that i might have to check out i believe could be rob's pornographic alter ego it is the

[26:12]white buffalo you guys remember the white buffalo i love the white buffalo i do not know the white

[26:16]buffalo oh he's so good he's the guy who does i don't know if you guys ever watched sons of

[26:20]anarchy but he did a lot of music in that one it would be an amazing show maybe rob can drop a song

[26:24]listen to this voice i've never seen this guy oh yeah this is that first stab russell or where's

[26:32]it at um i think it's in the varsity oh this this looks i would go to the second to this russell

[26:38]and all that shit comes off my shield listen to this chorus

[26:42]you

[26:43]you

[26:46]i mean it's so good go russell

[26:51]it is kind of weird though in the in the picture on this music video he's just standing in water

[26:58]up to his chest wearing regular clothes i guarantee he's wearing shoes to fit

[27:02]think of how gross that would be touching the bottom

[27:05]so what i really what i really needed your guys advice on is i've got one one big concert to take

[27:11]in this spring and i had to decide between the following concerts i wanted to see what

[27:15]you guys would go to yep good call t swift not t swift it's either bruce springsteen at excel or

[27:21]the red hot chili peppers at u.s bank if you were to choose to only see one which one would you pick

[27:27]bruce springsteen bruce bruce bruce bruce the boss too now what if the boss tickets were about three

[27:33]to four times more expensive than the red hot chili pepper they must be the world's most expensive

[27:38]tickets that i cannot imagine how much that is but the chili peppers have a new album out right

[27:42]yeah yeah you better take a listen to that new album and see it because like

[27:45]is bruce i have listened to it it's okay they've got one or two good songs all right they still

[27:50]but they still do the fun thing where it's like a dingy dong ding a ding a california ding a donker

[27:55]ding and then the choruses are all by karen glide to the diggy diggy donker ding it's a classic red

[28:04]actually thank you for that impression my other question would be uh technically are you allowed

[28:09]to get this as a holiday gift for someone even though you're the one who wants to go yes does

[28:15]a holiday gift of course yeah is it like is it is it technically for you or is it technically for

[28:21]them you know what i mean like for them let's like hypothetically yeah if i bought if i bought

[28:25]sarah pearl jam tickets for the holidays so that we would go to pearl jam that wouldn't fly

[28:31]yeah oh that wouldn't come my other question would be if you were rich in the plants

[28:39]okay well yes i couldn't get two seats together so you're up top

[28:45]i'm down on the side but i still have a clear view you know those seats i like i'm right there so i'll

[28:49]meet you we'll call an uber after together the other question i had i'll get you a shirt we'll

[28:53]split it sure if you were going to get tickets as a gift do you actually have to purchase them by the

[28:58]time you give the gift or could you say you're getting them and then wait for prices to go down

[29:03]like the day before the concert and then acquire them do you have to have the tickets acquired you

[29:08]have to give them something that says tickets russell it has to be it can't be like an iou

[29:13]tickets i'll promise that i'll buy the tickets russell my kids my kids are 11 and 13 and even

[29:20]they wouldn't give a homemade gift to me their dad personally couldn't care less about roll it

[29:25]going then matt how's it going at least a screenshot or something i don't know i got

[29:32]you a screenshot i feel like russ didn't like the advice corner oh yeah you know we better hop out

[29:36]of there smells like mulch in the vice corner and the vcr is on and the tv's off i don't get it it

[29:43]makes sense that combination should never happen um there's this uh just on startup yeah there's

[29:51]this reddit page called tdil today i learned i don't know if you guys ever get on this at all

[29:56]i've got a couple tdils today i learned i think it's just french president right you don't have

[30:01]to say td tdil that's what it says on the reddit today it's it's one word tl maybe it is tl yeah

[30:10]yeah i'm not on there a ton so i would i mean who knows

[30:13]like i probably wrong so i learned that the french president emmanuel marcon marcon

[30:22]he's 44 his wife is 69 she was his teacher when he was 15

[30:28]and that i didn't know that he was in the same class as her middle daughter and so his step

[30:37]he's got two step kids that are older than him i cannot tell you so first of all i just want to be

[30:43]very clear i hit that yeah when she was 69 and then you happen to be saying that she was also

[30:47]a teacher when i hit the yeah so it sounds like there's some confusion there but second of all

[30:51]to be clear point of order point of order i've seen some documentaries on chrome incognito mode

[30:57]that follow that uh storyline almost exactly these things are these documentaries are anywhere

[31:02]from like eight to ten minutes long ten minutes exactly like yeah this is probably in rob's movie

[31:09]better than 50 probability that he has also been

[31:12]been with his stepsister right what hey i mean sometimes she loses stuff over the coffee table

[31:18]or not stepsister sorry i said that wrong but with with his lady's stepdaughter lady's daughter

[31:23]right yeah yeah this is stepdaughter stepdaughter he's got stepkids that are older than him do you

[31:28]think what that's gonna stay in the podcast like really like in your wildest dreams you think that's

[31:32]gonna stay in no i don't i do not please please take that out i love the fucking of my step

[31:37]out there you know that's not staying in

[31:40]we we my balls are

[31:42]so smooth they're like a frog leg that also should not stand that's not staying in that's too much

[31:48]okay um today i learned that there's uh there's a chiefs super fan a guy a super fan of the kansas

[31:57]city chiefs okay he dresses up he puts like this wolf costume on he's got like this huge personality

[32:05]tweets all the time all this stuff well he didn't make it to last week's game and everybody got

[32:10]really concerned about

[32:12]why he didn't make it to last week's game and then they they started to really figure out

[32:17]you got a life they're checking hospitals they were checking you know anywhere they could

[32:21]figure it out well somebody finally found him can i ask you matt real quick this guy was dressed how

[32:26]how does he dress up as a wolf like a wolf now did they check the top of a van okay

[32:33]a top of a van driving down the highway um was he surfing on it was that what he was

[32:42]actually skiing the surfing is copyright so he's actually both feet facing straight forward he was

[32:46]in a tucked position i don't know if i i can't confirm or deny rob if they checked that okay i

[32:52]can't i don't know something about what somebody did find him what i don't get about that is that

[32:56]his dad is also a werewolf right like that's pretty fun probably i mean genetics would tell

[33:03]you you're a science guy no i think there's a scene where they both uh wolf out you know what

[33:08]i mean we're talking about teen wolf again yes we are talking about i have never seen teen wolf what

[33:12]man russell do we need to do a special episode where we just watch the entirety of teen wolf

[33:17]and do a commentary on it and then other i just feel bad that rob's uh surfing on a van bit was

[33:23]probably lost on uh fifty percent of the co-hosts probably a hundred percent of our listeners and

[33:28]there's no way you can put together what happened in the scene just from my description okay because

[33:32]it's actually more nuanced than that matt what was going on with the chiefs guy in the teen wolf

[33:37]outfit so then the cheap super fan they did find him three hundred miles away in oklahoma he was

[33:42]in jail because he was robbing banks and the main reason he was robbing banks where the money is to

[33:47]pay for his chief's tickets he couldn't afford oh wow super fans so the chiefs are in the playoffs

[33:54]he needed to get playoff tickets he so he had to go down to oklahoma to rob a bank he became

[33:59]accustomed to a certain lifestyle yeah how about that so i mean life's just ruining your life to

[34:06]see a chief's game i don't know patrick mahomes is so good though it's very good they've got

[34:12]patrick mahomes and travis kelsey they're so good man like they're i mean it's they're not bad think

[34:17]about bad that and that that new uh running back thing is like panchero or pachero or pachero or

[34:22]you live you live for something or you die for nothing you know what i mean that's what i hear

[34:26]you i hear you well i i have i have and then the final thing i didn't learn this but i've

[34:32]i've experienced this over the last couple weeks or so i have invested my own hard-earned money

[34:39]uh i think you guys have i think you guys

[34:41]know that you know sarah doesn't really let me have like any room in the upstairs so she like

[34:47]no you have never said this ever what are you talking about this is doing what do you mean

[34:51]she has my bathrooms my bathroom's down here right no no wait let me you can use any bathroom

[34:56]in the house right i can use any bathroom now yeah but you will have three bathrooms around

[35:00]you whispered it you kind of looked around like maybe somebody was listening to you when you get

[35:03]up at like 3 30 in the morning for your flight do you got to walk down like two flights of stairs

[35:07]to use a basement bathroom just one well i don't have to but i mean that's all that's

[35:11]that's where all my stuff is so you know like i have chosen i to have my own bathroom let's just

[35:18]say that in the basement but that's where my bathroom is down here in the basement and so

[35:23]since i have my own that's not it doesn't get easier since i have my own bathroom i can do

[35:29]whatever i want there right so i've decided that i put a fridge in you go for it oh my god there's

[35:34]a fridge down here yeah to keep the toilet paper cold but you know we can edit that out um

[35:41]but i have decided to put in a bidet on my toilet downstairs classy

[35:48]what prompted you to add that this is like the heavens opening up and i was like boy this show

[35:56]really sucks today and now the heavens are opening up and i see just content i can just see content

[36:00]streaming in like a warm stream of information hitting me right where i like it in the mind

[36:07]yes in your freshly shorn

[36:11]now yeah tell us i want to know all about it how many times have you turned it on and just

[36:19]sprayed it all over the bathroom that's all i really want to know like uh really only like the

[36:24]first time when i was trying to figure out like how you know like because i installed it myself

[36:28]because it's just like it's a cheap 30 thing from amazon right you just hook into the waterline

[36:34]things like that and so this is like our talk about the walgreens twice the other day if i'm

[36:38]getting that apparatus i think i want to spend more than 30

[36:41]here's the thing you don't it's one of those things you don't know right like

[36:45]am i going to spend like 400 get an actual like toilet and then just never use it or should i

[36:51]you know test the waters a little bit maybe get the cheap one first and see what's how it's like

[36:55]somebody would say testy the waters but i wouldn't test testy the waters and so i gotta tell you guys

[37:01]it is wonderful it's it's just i mean so many good everyone says that yeah it sounds awesome

[37:11]i mean yeah i want i now man let me ask you this yeah how much would you have to get a discount to

[37:17]pay somebody how much would they have to pay you for you to have to call some uh plumber okay so

[37:22]picture this you open the door this guy 55 years old hands like steel right he's got just just total

[37:29]man hands he comes in firm handshake hey i'm ray i'm the plumber you called me what do you need

[37:34]and then you turn to ray you say listen i'm putting a bidet downstairs could you put it in for me please

[37:40]like how much would you have to get paid to make that call why would you be embarrassed at all i

[37:45]mean like zero like whatever the cost of it is why would you be embarrassed to have a bidet put in

[37:49]i suppose they probably see some shit where they're like a bidet is actually the opposite

[37:53]of the bidet is probably like the best part of their day where they're like listen this the best

[37:57]part of their bidet yeah i didn't have to like deal with any like literal shit like this was

[38:03]great you're right man they probably are super happy so i would highly recommend you know there's

[38:10]people on this podcast who listen to this podcast and we could we could go through all the names but

[38:16]i mean well let's do it they know who they are who do you think would like it i think i i i would

[38:22]love to get a review from brian from woodbury no there's no chance oh i guarantee this is a weird

[38:28]at all i guarantee he'd be all about it this is normal i guarantee you thought about it

[38:33]guarantee it but no i mean so again it's the whole thing you don't just you know you use water to

[38:40]wash your hands right you use water to wash everything else why why wouldn't you use water

[38:44]to wash down there right and it's it's uh it's an experience guys and i would highly recommend it

[38:50]when you go back when you go back to raw dogging it with no bidet yep are you just like so

[38:58]disappointed you're kind of like you're at work or whatever and you're taking a break and you're

[39:01]just like it's it's a little disappointing i can't wait to get home and really really get

[39:06]clean yeah yeah really flush this thing out really right so how does it technically

[39:10]function do you like step do you like have a little button you push or how does it work

[39:14]on the side it's almost like a like one of those like lounge chairs that you know where you kick

[39:19]up kick back and then you got to turn the vibe you know you can have like massaging

[39:24]chairs or whatever so it's like that there's just there's a little button and you can increase the

[39:30]pressure up to a certain point and then there's a little back and forth that moves the little

[39:34]wand backward and forward you know so you're you're not just spraying one spot good and so

[39:40]yeah you know so you just because i was picturing you kind of doing the dog on the kind of depends

[39:43]on how things went that day and you know how much pressure you need and how much you got to spray

[39:48]and so how long does it make does it like do you hold the button down for an extended period or is

[39:54]it a quick spurt you turn it on so like you twist it and it's just on right all day and so yeah so

[40:02]it could be on all day i mean it's just yeah it's just hooked up to the thing it's very nice i mean

[40:07]that thing would be like clink i mean like

[40:10]clean clean like i'm trying to think like power washing like i'd want one that's so powerful that

[40:17]my head would fill up like one of those balloons at the fair you know where you spray it it just

[40:20]gets bigger that's what i want i want something where like when i'm done i weigh more than when

[40:25]i started fill me up i want like the power you get at those self-service car wash places you

[40:32]know what i mean where that's like you know somebody's sketchy in town owns that stuff

[40:36]there's like you put in a quarter and it's like the most powerful water ever it's like it's like

[40:39]it it's like it's hugely wasteful it's crazy and it's one of the most fun you can have for a dollar

[40:45]is spraying down that car with a super high power washer so i probably should have brought you guys

[40:49]are in this christmas spirit with your christmas hats i probably should have brought this up a

[40:53]couple weeks ago so that you know if any of our uh becker heads out there are looking for a

[40:59]christmas present for their husbands no they probably you know i would get them of a day

[41:04]they could buy it from home depot with a bunch of rebates and install it 12 months from now right

[41:08]yeah exactly

[41:09]now russell you are looking for a gift right because your your ticket your ticket plan has

[41:13]fallen through so you are looking for a gift so i just want to put this in the ticket

[41:16]ticket plan didn't fall through it's just not going to be as effective as i had planned

[41:21]there's no deviating from the plan i is this like an add-on to something else that you're

[41:29]getting this person i mean it's been like 18 months hasn't it it's been a while now isn't

[41:34]it we can't get now we gotta move now is 18 months is 18 months the length of time you need to be

[41:39]together to get somebody a bidet like that's not a six-month thing that's not a three-month thing

[41:44]right of like hey i don't know i mean it's definitely like if you were to get somebody

[41:49]a bidet like three months in that might be like a big red yeah they might be like yeah so man only

[41:55]does every bathroom in the house now have a bidet or only yours in the basement just mine

[42:00]i mean you don't there's a lower age limit for a boy to be able to manage a bidet what are the

[42:09]rules can anybody come down and use the bidet anytime they want or is there like a surprisingly

[42:14]it's kind of just like out of sight out of mind i think because the boys got their own bathroom

[42:19]upstairs right sarah's got hers on the main floor and i got mine in the base i think we all have our

[42:24]own uh home turf yeah everybody just respects that makes sense because i was thinking if my dad

[42:28]installed a bidet if i'd want to go use it and i almost threw up so that kind of answers that

[42:32]imagine a bidet with a disco ball in your bathroom

[42:39]holy cow the same switch activates both rob roland going how's it going with you

[42:45]i'm thinking about getting into jujitsu is that crazy oh i love it i give yes i want to hear all

[42:50]about i want to start getting into jujitsu all the time i want to start rolling guys it's definitely

[42:54]very trendy it sounds like the guy who can't cut it in movie time that used to go to a different

[42:58]trendy sport right i don't know i mean the thing is is that i'm not really like aggressive when

[43:03]i'm wrestling somebody but i think like it would be fun to like just learn about it i don't know i

[43:09]watch and not like be part of this like just maybe it seems extremely like just life skills right

[43:16]like any situation you get into at any time you feel like you'd be put in a good spot yeah having

[43:22]having a little bit of jujitsu in your life right yeah and so i know i've thought about it too kind

[43:28]of but it's you're much stronger rob you know i think you're much stronger than people give you

[43:32]credit for yeah so i don't know if you could find anybody to roll with and you know what else is

[43:36]really cool is that my elbows don't hurt right now like they don't hurt right now they don't hurt

[43:38]like they you see how i straighten them and it doesn't just kill i would like to change that

[43:42]and make it so somebody tries to bend it the wrong way my nephew my one of my nephews one of my

[43:46]sister's kids he was in jujitsu for one round of classes or whatever and i don't want to call my

[43:52]sister out but i once saw the picture of him in his class and he did not enjoy it and the main

[43:57]reason he did not enjoy it is every kid in the class had a gi and he was the only one that was

[44:02]there in jujitsu just wrestling like he's there rolling in his t-shirt and pants it wasn't like

[44:08]time though or something i mean everybody on the first time you need it goes like that listen i'm

[44:13]gonna show up i'm gonna show up with a black belt just right away i'll be like hey i bought this

[44:18]stolen valor shit right there but it's hilarious when you see like these videos like at schools

[44:24]right where the bully's picking on the kid and then the kid just pulls out some jujitsu move

[44:28]and just puts the guy on the floor right you just you just want to be like hell yeah good for that

[44:33]kid see that's the problem is that i would be the one getting put on the floor like i i know i would

[44:38]that's that's the problem well everybody does at first right i mean that's kind of the whole deal

[44:42]that's how you learn and i don't know last time rob was doing muay thai didn't didn't he get beat

[44:46]up and then his wife told him he asked him not to do it like didn't she say you should ask them to

[44:51]be nicer to you when you're sparring when you are a big guy people want to beat the shit out of you

[44:55]and they think it's really funny and it's actually i still like have feelings and nerves like it

[44:59]doesn't hurt less when you hit me just because i'm a big guy okay so i'm worried that somebody's

[45:03]gonna like put me in a chokehold and i get a huge boner during the class you know what i mean like

[45:08]what happens if that happens has this happened before huh has this ever happened before my

[45:15]black belt like why are you worried about it i use my black belt and i it's like a reverse

[45:21]is this a music podcast rob rob gets put in one triangle choke and he's got to like stand up and

[45:27]waddle off the waddle off the bat oh now you're boner in the gee guy oh no it's fully geared up

[45:38]but he's got a boner i don't know this guy boner in the gee guy would i get much pleasure from

[45:44]making somebody tap out i don't think so right i don't know aaron would you ever do jiu-jitsu

[45:49]yes because anthony bourdain did so anything he thinks is cool i think it's cool no i

[45:54]drive by one of the gracie judo schools or one of the gracie jiu-jitsu schools i've driven by

[46:00]a bunch of times i think like people say that it's the best shape of your life you know like

[46:04]the fighting fitness is something different i think it'd be great but i also would get

[46:08]my ass kicked so oh yeah what's happening that's the thing is i'd be like you probably can't do

[46:13]anything to my weird my ankle but god damn it hurts so bad aaron you mentioned anthony bourdain

[46:19]i think i shared this with you guys like a year ago and i remember this inspired me for a weekend

[46:23]i'm going to share a quote with you guys can we do that yeah yes please it says eat at a local

[46:29]restaurant tonight get the cream sauce have a cold pint at four o'clock in a mostly empty bar

[46:34]go somewhere you've never been listen to someone you think

[46:38]may have nothing in common with you order the steak rare eat an oyster have a negroni have to

[46:44]be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you but have

[46:49]a drink with them anyways eat slowly tip your server check in on your friends check in on

[46:55]yourself enjoy the ride anthony bourdain and when you go home you're going to have a huge blast of

[47:00]cold water to clean it all up is it true man that you only use cold water to save money

[47:07]hey russell hey yeah i'm going to teach you about this album russell right now

[47:14]so basically to understand paul's boutique this is a very similar i think this is very similar to

[47:20]that u2 album actually um because this is paul's boutique where basically bc boys were coming up

[47:26]they're one of the biggest hits of what was 86 is that license to ill like they were crazy probably

[47:32]they started as a punk band of course at cbgb's we talked about that um and russell can you believe

[47:37]to cbgb's when you're in new york and try to find it what are we doing well i brought this up i was

[47:42]staying in a hotel that was right next to the the what's the what's the jazz club the birdland jazz

[47:48]club i heard a song about it from manhattan transfer one of my favorite bands russell we're

[47:54]going to cbgb we're going to cbgb's next time you come here so basically they release they get

[48:00]picked up by def jam right and they make license to ill and it is a huge album all of a sudden bc boys

[48:07]go from being nobody so now they're touring with madonna they're opening for run dmc and basically

[48:14]they're told like you need to live this life of the frat rap guys that we've made you of like we

[48:18]love to drink we love to party this is like our thing and honestly they were like i don't really

[48:24]like this and like it's not like they're expecting us to make the same album again like they want to

[48:28]hear more like no sleep till brooklyn they want to hear more and the real kicker was rick rubin

[48:33]tried to redo the guitar on no sleep till brooklyn and

[48:37]didn't tell anybody that he had redone it and there he's playing over one of the bandmates guitar

[48:41]and then he said hey i got an idea for a movie just like we did with run dmc with his crush groove

[48:46]is that what their movie is or what's their i can't remember what it is but they but basically

[48:50]they had this plan where they were making movies with their rap stars uh at def jam and they were

[48:56]like we're gonna do that for the bc boys you guys will take 10 of the profit we'll take 90 and the

[49:00]bc boys like no we're out of here they stopped paying royalties the bc boys totally relocated

[49:05]they moved out to california they moved out to california they moved out to california they moved

[49:07]they got picked up by capital records and they they met these producers at a party randomly the

[49:13]dust brothers and so they all got in and they were making these uh this music and the dust

[49:18]brothers like yeah this is gonna be hot at the clubs like you guys are bringing in so many samples

[49:22]and kind of layering them in an interesting way and the bc was like no no no we're gonna rap over

[49:25]these this album as well and they're like what and so basically you have this album which is

[49:31]they were sampling at the time right this comes out in 89 is that true i think so

[49:37]um and basically people were sampling at the time but this album like all you see on genius is what

[49:42]they sampled like every song has 30 samples it's just samples on samples on samples 105 total

[49:48]including 24 on the last track alone wow a lot of people think that this is like

[49:53]the bc boys like artistic highlight where they were like hey you think that we're just this

[49:58]frat rock we're going to show you that we really know a ton about music we respect the roots of

[50:02]music we're going to put it all in our samples and essentially this became a major influence in like

[50:06]what a lot of people call the golden age of hip-hop including the editors at wikipedia.com

[50:11]so let's get into paul's bow teak aaron are you a i should tell you this was a first track

[50:18]and they're saying they like all the girls because they're apologizing for

[50:22]some of the stuff they said on license ill which was received as well like fight for your right to

[50:28]party right like they basically don't ever play they just are completely embarrassed by it not in

[50:33]a bad way but they're like that's just not us and like we were

[50:36]kind of playing into what everybody else wanted to hear namely the the record companies and stuff

[50:42]like that and so this is just not us and so you can see what they're trying to backtrack

[50:46]and you've got to fight i mean what they're really making fun of there is the glam rock guys right

[50:50]like they're kind of they're doing a satire of it instead everybody was like you know what these

[50:56]guys are fucking right we do need to party and they're like no we're actually kind of saying

[51:00]the opposite everybody's like well um so then we come into the second song it sounds like you're

[51:04]talking about a slacker party right

[51:06]a slacker party what what's a slacker party oh you'll find out in a little bit

[51:12]oh oh i if i had a time machine i wouldn't go back to fix to not buy those sweater vests

[51:22]i would go forward and see what a slacker party is and that's it and then i'd burn the time machine

[51:27]and i'd happily live with future rob side by side in love metal rivets nine inch nails music yeah

[51:34]smoke yeah me steps out

[51:36]from 30 seconds ago being hey remember when you saw that time machine 30 seconds ago and you were

[51:41]like hey i'm gonna get in i'm you it'd be like well yeah but i got you i got in

[51:45]how were we getting a kiss all right the answer is a mirror with hair drawn on it

[51:53]uh shake your rump this is kind of the bc boys we know and love

[51:56]yeah this is like the the run dmc style wrapping back and forth from throwing rhymes back and

[52:06]forth

[52:06]i have never been a i would never say i'm a huge bc boys guy but i do love how their different

[52:16]voices sound i get a real kick out of that yeah they're very they're definitely very distinctive

[52:21]right they got their own style yeah now are you guys were you guys bc boys fans like man

[52:29]huge what was this song where they're riding with a car i can't draw on a huge blank

[52:36]well that one came out and that was like completely you're thinking of sabotage probably

[52:40]sabotage you know and that album came out and those guys are running in that song

[52:44]and everything going that was unbelievable right and then they were gone for about six years and

[52:48]then intergalactic came out and i'm like it's like you know we talked about uh metallica pivoting

[52:55]right in like the late 90s from kind of their what was it no load no load reload whatever it was

[53:01]and everybody kind of went oh you know i don't like it i liked it puppets to the the

[53:05]more thrash metal and then they got a little more poppy with black and load and yeah well

[53:10]intergalactic i mean it was like these guys pivoted in an awesome way kind of deal so you

[53:15]know i got that um rob can you go to like 215 i don't want to i don't know if you've got something

[53:20]else but can you go to like 215 on this album maybe like 210 and then we'll just let it play

[53:25]i want to see if you guys catch anything

[53:35]you guys hear that woo-ha does that ring a bell to anybody yeah that's all right okay so i heard

[53:49]that again i don't listen to lyrics at all right but i heard that woo-ha and instantly it was like

[53:56]time machine smoke clangs rivets nails on a nails on a triangle all that good stuff right and i

[54:05]went right back to like 1996 or something like that i don't even know what year it was

[54:10]to bust a rhyme so rob i thought and i i can't i just i know i can't do this justice i know i can't

[54:17]because russell does it so well but i thought this week that i would try to somehow create

[54:22]some sort of a list around that woo-ha yes i love it fantastic we just have just one sound

[54:29]just that one sound i was like it it got me on this much like rob got on this

[54:35]huge rabbit hole i got on this rabbit hole based on all of a sudden i clicked on again on wikipedia

[54:42]they've got the samples and they have them hidden because there's so many of them there's 105

[54:47]different samples on this whole album insane right there's something like 13 on this shaky

[54:53]rump alone including uh songs by like the beatles right i mean it's just it's unbelievable the

[55:00]different amount of samples that we got but so let's just go let's go the first song one thing

[55:05]you're talking about that woo-ha right that reminds me of the last job i had oh my god did

[55:09]not go well i was in charge of carrying around these packages uh in wuhan and i dropped one and

[55:16]i think it was fine but did you didn't get the delivery to the right spot

[55:20]it broke in a bunch of pangolins came over and ate it and i was like i can't be good but see you

[55:29]later you know what i mean i no wonder they call it wet market i slipped

[55:35]like it's a wet that's i don't know well first song rob let's go to let's go to the song that

[55:41]brought this back uh woo-ha so not that second song there flashback i'm going going out of order

[55:47]a little bit but you know from uh mr mr buster rhymes we've got the song woo-ha got you all

[55:57]let's just listen to that quick

[55:58]yes yeah i remember this

[56:04]i mean like i when you hear this is such a distinctive sound right yeah it is unbelievable

[56:11]okay so then again which next we'll go uh to the first song i got there fat boy slim in i think in

[56:18]2000 or 2001 had the song gangster trippin which so this song is like 13 samples in itself by fat

[56:27]boy slim right and so you know they pick it like just these unbelievable little clips from different

[56:34]artists including you hear a woo-ha but it's it's crazy though how much fat boy slim it was to the

[56:39]beastie boys right like you you realize i listen to that so all this so i'm trying to figure out

[56:46]where buster rhymes got it from did he get it from the beastie boys well in 1989 so right after i like

[56:55]this right after we got public enemy or is that what we've got here yep we got public enemy public

[57:01]enemy number one and so the time i got you hopefully it lines

[57:04]up here rob but this is public enemy and let's listen to their song

[57:08]there it is there it is there's the woo-ha it's a little old back to the woo-ha right

[57:16]all right so where does that come from this is like a true crime podcast oh my god we're going

[57:22]deeper you know we've been talking a lot about elizabeth holmes but matt's like sherlock holmes

[57:27]he's figuring this shit out the beastie boys where did you know where did they get it from if we go

[57:31]back to 1981 we've got the

[57:34]adventures of grandmaster flash on wheels of steel which is a live version with melly mel and the

[57:40]furious five there was so from what i know this is grandmaster flash and melly mel and the furious

[57:51]five and they put together this huge essentially live uh whatever you want to call the mixing

[57:59]of all of these things together but they're using three tracks instead of two and so that's came

[58:04]from that song came from actually uh in 1980 oh my god we're going deeper guys sugar hill

[58:11]the sugar hill gang had a song called eighth wonder and so if you go this is the original

[58:17]woo-ha so all of these bands comes back deepest i swear to god man if you go any deeper on this

[58:23]we're gonna need a bidet to get us out just listen to the eighth wonder by sugar this is

[58:34]just listen to the background beat for a second just listen to the background beat for a second

[58:49]you heard it go just start it over one more time rob

[58:53]the horns you hear that background there yeah okay so adventures of grandmaster

[59:04]flash 1981 eighth wonder by sugar hill gang 1980 from 1979 yes yes we've got full power a band

[59:13]called seventh wonder seventh one it's a song called daisy lady let's just listen to this real

[59:18]quick there's no woo-ha in this but just listen to this same same backbeat right can you hear the

[59:25]backbeat of this yeah so one year earlier it's this and this song was written produced arranged

[59:31]by a guy named ronald lapreed

[59:33]i hope i'm saying that right i don't know if i'm lapred lapreed who was the basis the original

[59:39]basis for the commodores okay so the commodores essentially was this huge group of from i think

[59:46]tuskegee university which is now tuskegee is it tuskegee university down in alabama and so they

[59:53]all came together you know they've got the commodores they're all splitting off and so i

[59:58]it was fascinating to me to hear all of these like just one-off woo-has right yeah

[60:03]um like make it all the way up through essentially to like 19 you know uh 2001 with all of these

[60:11]hip-hop artists who are sampling all these albums and actually uh buster rhymes his woo-ha got you

[60:18]all in check that song right buster rhymes famously came from where rosie did he hang out

[60:24]with the tribe called quest isn't that where he yeah he sees from the flip mode squad and native

[60:29]tongues right yeah i was trying to think of like where specifically he's from geographically but

[60:33]yeah i don't know if you've heard of him but i don't know if you've heard of him but i don't know

[60:33]native tongues yeah and so i think he essentially grew up with a tribe called quest and all of those

[60:38]guys if i have my information correct um eighth wonder was used in a in a song by a tribe called

[60:46]quest called rap promoter so i gotta think 1996 woo-ha got you all in check you know buster rhymes

[60:52]has been sitting on this beat for like four years and then finally brought this all together to

[60:57]finally come up with this song which was like hugely inspirational what i've got but it to me

[61:03]105 different cuts what an interesting voice buster rhymes has doesn't he like yeah he's one of those

[61:09]guys like we said before you know when it's buster you guys ever seen that that youtube video like

[61:14]the evolution of dance matt has just like blown that away with the evolution of woo-ha i mean like

[61:19]i know nothing about this right i mean like i know nothing about how all these guys went

[61:23]crate diving to find the seventh wonder you know to come up with this stuff and then

[61:28]you know just happen to have so again we're talking about like the party boy uh beast

[61:33]beastie boys and you know how they came up with all this stuff and they're trying to get back to

[61:36]their roots right well they've got one little sample of woo-ha got you all in check you know

[61:42]in one little song that they've got and it's it's unbelievable so they've got this uh we'll listen

[61:47]to song six in a while the sound of silence you'll hear the end by the sergeant uh by the beatles

[61:52]they've got cuts from sergeant pepper's lonely heart club and they got when i'm 64 i mean there's

[61:57]all of these you find all of these tiny little things and all of these and they've created this

[62:01]great sound right

[62:03]and you can just get into these huge rabbit holes and so russell i have deep respect for what you do

[62:10]on a weekly basis with our list because it is unbelievably hard to find but i tried to at least

[62:14]just bring it back to see if we could kind of sample ourselves to see how deep i mean all of

[62:20]these hip-hop artists go to create these songs so incredible that was my list for the week that was

[62:25]that was a top five i would say i bet they would have never found those records if they had to go

[62:32]to the stores where they felt uncomfortable that is the great point that's the point i was making

[62:37]they didn't have the internet they actually had to have a physical copy of every song they wanted

[62:41]to put in this album and i'll tell you guys now i don't think you could do that sampling stuff

[62:45]because i think it would be it would be prohibitively like copyright wise but you also

[62:51]can think of like maybe i absolutely love my penis like i wouldn't yeah no like i love having

[63:00]a penis i've always said like it's it's the greatest thing i've wanted to do in my life

[63:02]sorry i forgot you guys were here for a little bit actually

[63:15]man that was easily a top five list as i said now i do want to say this i have to say this if you

[63:22]listen to the bass on shake your rump listen to this listen to this part that was amazing that's

[63:28]that's like a sound from a different dimension isn't it

[63:32]i mean the sounds on this this album is a producer's delight it sounds perfect with

[63:39]headphones it's unbelievable i was walking around town today listening to this i felt

[63:43]like the coolest motherfucker ever listen to these lyrics i've never been dumped because

[63:47]i'm the most machinist i've never been jumped because i'm known as the most pachinist

[63:51]like that's as a guy who writes parody songs for a living right now that's amazing rhymes i can

[63:56]tell you right now you will not go on rhyme.com rhyme zone and find machinist he also mentions

[64:02]in the back of his ride and he busts out the whip it i fucking bought whippets the other day do you

[64:08]guys know what those are you did what are those legal to buy so drugs jenny bought one of those

[64:16]whipped cream makers that you get at like starbucks you know like the big metal ones that you put

[64:20]nitrous into and you put cream and it automatically whips it so we've been making whipped cream and

[64:24]you can put anything in you want so you put in you put in cream you put in like you know whatever

[64:30]syrup you want whatever it

[64:32]and then you put on the top and you insert this nitrous canister and it whips it automatically

[64:37]boom you got custom-made whipped cream whenever you want the thing is is that how wait how often

[64:42]are we like when i mean how often does everyone need whipped cream i had some on thanksgiving

[64:47]i'll be honest but we go through multiple cans of whipped cream a week at our house

[64:50]you do what for coffee directly i mean mostly it's directly into the mouth like it's a direct

[64:56]line i'm not gonna lie like if you come to our house that whipped cream canister has been in

[65:00]all four mouths it's a super super super super super super super super super super super super

[65:02]spreader event for sure but my kid looks at me and goes oh this is stupid having a custom-made

[65:07]whipped cream thing and i was like get out of the house you're disowned i'll never talk to you again

[65:11]i was like i would have killed for a custom whipped cream maker but when i bought it

[65:15]of course jenny bought it online and i have talked about before that sometimes people struggle with

[65:22]online purchases and getting all the necessary things guess what she didn't buy the day before

[65:25]thanksgiving oh yeah the canisters that caused the whipped cream to be made she just thought it like

[65:30]made the whipped cream i guess in the container i'm not sure so i had to go i was like where would

[65:35]they sell whippets and sure enough i went to a head shop in new york city and so right next to

[65:40]the bongs and like kratom everybody's selling kratom power i don't i don't even want to know

[65:44]what that does but it's next to the bongs i was like oh i need to buy these whippets and the guy's

[65:48]like okay and he takes them out and it's these packages of these like canisters right and of

[65:54]course like i said you can use them to get extraordinarily high and i turned to the guy

[65:57]they go i'm really making whipped cream with these and the guy was like okay

[66:00]i was like no i it was so stupid that was a good story man that was a top five list

[66:05]are you creating an edit point here johnny

[66:10]edit point story was so good

[66:15]i would say this is not the most sensitive song about the unhoused crisis that's sweeping the

[66:23]united states i think a lot of this album actually if you look at the lyrics it's it doesn't hold up

[66:30]it's problematic yeah there's some stuff on here that's not great and they're like we feel so bad

[66:35]for how we treated women on licensed ill and there's a couple songs in here i'm like

[66:38]you don't step forward yeah i would say now this song aaron aaron sent us today a picture of

[66:47]himself shaving his bald ass head okay because i was trying to tell you where i was before i

[66:51]you know i was letting you know why i wasn't joining the chat and it blew my i know matt

[66:55]sent a picture of his bidet so listen everybody's sending the pictures what they're doing this is a

[66:59]song called egg man and it's about the beatles love of throwing eggs at people and also the

[67:04]beastie boys love to throw eggs at people outside the hotel room window and i'm thinking every time

[67:09]i hear this song all i can think about is aaron's head looking through the window because they do

[67:13]talk about a bald guy looking through the window and then they want to throw an egg at him and i

[67:16]gotta say i get it when i see aaron's bald head with no hat on and think about hitting that with

[67:22]an egg that would be satisfying who would be the most satisfying guy to throw an egg at on this

[67:27]podcast it's aaron right

[67:28]so the converter

[67:29]russell no it'd be you rob rob

[67:33]we played uh it was called the game was called battle pong and we played ping pong and then if

[67:40]you lost you had to pull your shirt up and let the other person blast you with the ping pong ball

[67:45]and watching you get hit with a ping pong ball over and over on your bare skin they'd be laughing

[67:50]it would be you guys think of aaron's bald dome and you're just drilling that thing with a double

[67:58]a-sized egg

[67:59]rob i did notice one thing on this song and i think you might owe our listeners and maybe your

[68:05]your kids an apology abected a better apology um if you notice a few weeks ago um you had mentioned

[68:12]that i don't know why people think humpty dumpty is an egg no one has ever said he's an egg it turns

[68:17]out on this song they say humpty dumpty was a big fat egg he was playing the wall then he broke his

[68:22]leg so technically people have said he's an egg rob so so i believe you us and your daughter's an

[68:28]apology for thinking that humpty dumpty is not an egg back did it better this is such bullshit

[68:33]they've fallen into big humpty dumpty's got you too russell back the big egg podcast big humpty

[68:40]it's a big fat egg there is nothing in the store oh my god matt has a humpty dumpty statue that

[68:46]is showing us it's the second most terrifying thing we've seen after russell drinking out of

[68:49]a bag all night listen at no point in humpty dumpty do they say anything about him being

[68:56]egg-like it is a man who sat on a wall and fell and literally busted into pieces with the force

[69:02]of his impact guts and sinew everywhere and yet we depict him as an egg who's sad that he broke

[69:07]apart something to think about that that lame stream media was that superfly that's the sample

[69:13]on that last one that's badass this again we've talked about this before i i like listening to

[69:18]this i think it's awesome i think they do a great job but man they've got some liberties with a lot

[69:23]of great songs here that they're really leveraging right yeah this could never happen now they're

[69:28]like yeah they're playing huge swaths of songs that were already great which is enjoyable for

[69:33]sure but yeah it's absolutely not allowed anymore um guys i mean just like listen i've heard about

[69:39]people that sell planes because i've heard of biplanes but this is high planes drifter

[69:43]this is another great song about driving your car around you know what i mean like

[69:50]should be played in a car with a superheap system

[69:53]what is that back there

[69:57]they sample up on crippled creek by the band jesus song oh it's too bad i didn't bring back

[70:04]my crippled creek drink with the uh pomegranate molasses yeah i've got some pomegranate molasses

[70:10]in my fridge right now aaron no i do it's true i do aaron come on you just give me i can't even

[70:15]get over here fast enough are you serious what the hell are you talking about oh do you guys

[70:23]think you could name

[70:24]i won't do it we gotta keep moving it's sweet a little bit of fruit it's good on pancakes

[70:31]aaron tell us one other weird thing that's in your fridge right now

[70:34]what's something that you think you have that i don't okay now look at me i'm a man of culture

[70:39]a man of taste okay why'd you laugh at that you don't motherfucker i look at that hat

[70:45]that you don't i mean you are a man with a with his own whipped cream baker

[70:49]mm-hmm yeah and i can use it to have whipped cream

[70:53]or get high so check it's kind of like i think i have one baby bell left from the last little

[70:59]you know net bag of baby bells that's not weird though but i bet you a little cheese that's the

[71:03]best thing you can think of that i don't have any do you have one bro i got so much cheese in my

[71:08]fridge it's crazy like i got lots of cheese all right aaron thanks for saving that bit

[71:13]now this one you want to talk about beatles

[71:18]over like bumping around the town like when you're some of these songs they

[71:22]will start off kind of slower like this is kind of whiny i don't know how you describe it and then

[71:26]all of a sudden like the second half of the song it just ramps up okay so let's see if

[71:30]let's see if russell's right this is the first half let's go to the second half

[71:32]right russell's got it wow he knows how to write a bc boy song

[71:44]wow this is my these are my favorite parts of the bc boy songs here when they get going with

[71:50]some tempo they're all on the same start

[71:52]this is the sergeant pepper reprise on the second go way to the end of that one

[71:59]right go way to the end once all right way to the end as that that's the brand of his

[72:04]the unison rapping is nice i like i like it too

[72:07]there it is you can hear in the background that sergeant pepper's back there

[72:13]that's the end how much would that cost the bc boys to do now do you think

[72:18]infinite right they wouldn't license it

[72:22]yeah no do you know who made some money off that back then for the the beatles samples you know

[72:27]who the bc boys were paying michael jackson nobody it's me give me some give me some money buy some

[72:32]milk i use the money from the bc boys buy some mama's milk give me that milk he loves that bit

[72:41]he's always a big fan and i will keep giving it to him i'll give him what i'll give him what

[72:45]vincent price wants the price is right in this case he's right all right 73 minute rule

[72:50]i go to sleep

[72:52]how much of your time do you think you've spent watching the price is right

[72:55]like the show like how much i think this is number seven and it's called three minute

[73:00]the price is right have you guys ever seen the video of aaron paul the guy from

[73:06]breaking bad when he was on price is right as a kid no no we we have to we have let's pull it up

[73:14]let's pull it up we watch it every holiday season this is so good this is so good okay so price is

[73:19]right aaron paul price is right aaron

[73:22]okay this might be triggering aaron right i'm watching the other aaron is this before he was

[73:28]an actor oh way before yeah this is like 2002

[73:30]he's fired up

[73:38]oh my god he's going nuts

[73:42]we've been moving around

[73:50]an elegant

[73:52]but his buddies are all they're going nuts like a bunch of

[74:11]now at that point of course aaron paul was in breaking bad at that point do you think aaron

[74:16]paul's like wow this is the highlight of my this is probably the greatest thing i'm going to do in

[74:19]my life just let him let him tell you he'll tell you right now if it's not going to work out

[74:22]it's the highlight of his life

[74:23]he's so pumped he met bob barker

[74:27]no matter how far you're missing

[74:30]oh my god he's beating some military woman

[74:33]he's the worst

[74:36]oh my god

[74:39]the military woman has gone over on the room and spa

[74:43]and he's going for a sports car

[74:45]26,368

[74:50]now he put

[74:52]26,368

[74:52]he went over by a hundred bucks

[74:54]look at his face

[74:55]no guys i'm not gonna lie to you

[74:59]i i was suspicious when russell immediately said pull up the aaron paul on price is right video

[75:05]i did not i was like oh my god what is going to

[75:07]this is worth it this is this is it's not quite hot ass on feet but it's a good one

[75:11]okay look at his reaction

[75:14]he's smart

[75:16]by so little

[75:18]by

[75:19]by so little

[75:22]that's how bob makes money isn't it

[75:26]listen they're howling in the crowd this guy just got his spirit broken and they're howling

[75:31]oh no and then the music plays and it's so upbeat oh my god

[75:37]make sure your pets are spayed and neutered

[75:39]now i know what you're thinking what if

[75:42]what would be horse's favorite

[75:44]treat hey ladies

[75:52]and this is a song about them trying to meet ladies does that surprise you

[75:58]i guess it's a little bit off

[76:00]now you hear this song and you're like wow this is classic bc boys this makes sense

[76:09]it's cool it's funky like literally when you're listening to this at headphones it sounds great

[76:13]and you're like wow i can't wait for the next song which is also going to be cool

[76:17]and funky and if somebody was listening to me listen to this they'd think it's cool too

[76:22]i love this

[76:23]it is literally like a 23 minute song 23 second song

[76:31]eric weisenberg and marshall brinkman

[76:34]eric weisenberg if you guys remember we did a list about him

[76:37]probably a year and a half ago i believe he's the guy who played the banjo in um what's the

[76:42]most famous banjo song uh

[76:44]the dueling banjo

[76:45]dueling banjo

[76:46]in deliverance

[76:47]and we did a list on him i'll have to go find what it was but we we did a list and we've covered this guy before

[76:51]they brought in a list and we've covered this guy before

[76:52]they brought in a list and we've covered this guy before

[76:52]they brought in a list and we've covered this guy before

[76:52]banjo player

[76:53]it is such

[76:54]they were sparing no expense

[76:56]i thought that was a sample and i was like that's a lot to sample that's like the whole song they just played verbatim

[77:01]it'd be like releasing the bodyguard soundtrack i mean like listen to the sample i made

[77:04]you guys have been mentioning samples all night well i've been sampling something tonight and it's a cocktail it's a drink

[77:10]oh boy

[77:11]oh boy here we go now i just want to set the scene for everybody

[77:14]russell as we have been drinking has been drinking out of a bottle that is in a paper bag now you might say to yourself oh a bottle in a paper bag it must be a normal size bottle

[77:22]a normal size can size bottle like a bag that you would see a person holding and the answer is no this is like a groceries store bag this is a full-on it's i think it's got handles on the top it's huge and russell has a huge bottle and it hasn't been drinking it as if he is a giant or no as if he is like i don't know what it's like you've been shrunk down honey i shrunk the kids and i'm drinking a normal size bottle it's huge

[77:44]it's probably it's probably like a a 38 centimeter high bag i would say right for those for our european listeners right rob

[77:52]no yeah we're taking off over there

[77:54]so actually i went and looked at i looked at booze and vinyl and they didn't have they didn't have paul's boutique is it paul's boutique we're listening to oh my gosh they didn't have that in the book 25 in the list but they did have license to ill so i figured i would go back and listen to this i figure we can i know they've changed their what they're doing they brought in the dust brothers here it's a little bit different but i figure we could still celebrate the beast he was anyways and on side a in the book they recommended a brass monkey have you guys ever had a brass monkey

[78:21]never have

[78:22]no

[78:22]never

[78:23]no

[78:24]rob maybe you could play brass monkey in the background while i talk about it

[78:27]i sure could

[78:29]you know at 192 we're gonna be listening to license deal

[78:33]oh it's not that far

[78:34]yeah so russell put a cork in this bottle and save some of it because i think you drink that whole thing tonight

[78:38]there's no cork going in this one it's a twist off

[78:40]i think you'll die if you drink that whole thing i'm not gonna lie

[78:42]i'm actually quite worried

[78:44]so you want me to give you the ingredients for a brass monkey

[78:47]no thanks

[78:47]yeah

[78:48]it is eight ounces of old english we got malt liquor

[78:52]oh

[78:52]eight ounces

[78:52]eight ounces so one of the ingredients is just starts with old english

[78:57]is old english

[78:58]oe

[78:59]and the oe is some of us call it

[79:00]the only other ingredient is orange juice it is it is malt liquor and orange juice

[79:05]it's a shame

[79:06]and the book says to follow the spirit of the recipe grab a 40 ounce bottle of oe

[79:10]drink it down to the label and then finish it off with orange juice so as you guys can see tonight

[79:16]i have got my bottle of old english i've got a 40 i drank it down to the label

[79:22]filled it up with orange juice and i'm enjoying a brass monkey tonight

[79:25]all right honestly russell

[79:29]you look like somebody who i would see down on the subway and i would tell my kids like hey

[79:34]let's just steer clear of that guy for a little bit russell when we get to license ill we all have

[79:38]to drink a brass monkey so you're gonna have to remind us it's actually very good it's very good

[79:44]oh no i did go through an awkward moment though at the at the liquor store because i went and i

[79:47]bought i'm probably the only person who's been in there today that bought a six pack of a brass monkey

[79:52]of strawberry lemonade trulies and an old english 40. yeah and he looked at me he looked at me he

[79:59]goes you need a bag or anything and i was like i better put that 40 in a bag so i needed a bag i

[80:04]figured i needed that for the for the presentation tonight right yeah you made the night but it's

[80:09]pretty good i say our listeners should try it out a brass monkey russell's drinking trulies in the

[80:14]front and old english at night when we go to night time it's old english time technically

[80:19]license deal is recommended um

[80:22]for what did i say before you spend this at a slacker party so you spend the other one at a

[80:27]slacker party whatever that is we're finally finding out about the slackers you teased it

[80:32]so long ago and now here we are we made it and it was about a half hour ago so it was yeah future

[80:37]rob we've caught up we finally caught up with future rob and now we all know what a slacker

[80:42]party is stock up on plenty of red solo cups but don't bother picking up your apartment that's the

[80:46]slacker party i guess done and done i did i was playing video games with somebody

[80:52]cleaned the apartment again today and i had to lift my legs i had to lift my legs

[80:55]and i didn't even think twice about it it felt good looking down the barrel

[80:59]this is one of the few where they're actually playing instruments on it

[81:03]and i did not care for this song it's got like a heavy metal angle to it or something right

[81:09]it's a slower tempo right it's not it's not the style that russell's yeah it's like oh what does

[81:16]everybody love about the beach boys bc boys oh yeah the guitar in the front and their voices way

[81:20]in the back that'll be good

[81:22]car can you hear the mississippi queen by mountain in the back oh my god

[81:26]i can't believe some of the albums that they sample in this yeah it's wild it's car thief

[81:32]this is you can hear that this was a instrumental for the club before they rapped over it

[81:38]you can imagine being the club just looking for the instrumental of this

[81:42]they're listening to it'd be so good

[81:44]i mean this sounds so good bad news i read today that they're

[81:52]there's a gang called the kia boys who are going around stealing hyundais and kias and it's it's in

[81:56]the midwest right now but i'm hoping it doesn't spread to my driveway that's that's like old news

[82:01]around here like my piano teachers had her car stolen twice what by the kia boys yep now you

[82:10]would think the key gang who would they love more than a piano teacher there's 88 of them

[82:14]you know i mean like there's so many kias on that piano but the deal is it's so easy to break into

[82:19]them you just drive one around until it runs out of gas and then you're like oh my god i'm going to

[82:22]gas and then just steal another one next one right you know so everybody gets their cars back usually

[82:26]yeah you know that's kind of the thing it's just out of gas and you got to go pick it up you know

[82:30]even if i stole a car i would get really stressed out driving it around until it ran out of gas like

[82:36]that as soon as it got down to the e i'd be like oh boy let's start looking for another key this

[82:41]dress yeah this stresses me out like the stealing the car part easy no problem getting there hot

[82:45]wiring simply using the stuff i learned on the streets okay when i was growing up but running

[82:50]out of gas

[82:50]yeah

[82:52]no thanks very scary what comes around

[82:56]i mean this album you just started to hear that same thing over and over but

[83:04]i'm telling you sonically is this album is beautiful

[83:08]this one the bass is so cool

[83:11]now russell would you recommend playing this in the college dorm room is this a is this a vibe

[83:17]i think so i think this is a great vibe album don't you guys think if you went to a party and

[83:21]this is part of it

[83:22]play in the background i think it's badass i do now and i gotta give props russell you'll remember

[83:26]there was a guy on our our four freshman year lucas who was really into the beast beastie boys

[83:32]and specifically this album and i did not give him as much credit at the time for having great

[83:37]taste in music he may have had some other things regret me the wrong way but yeah he might have

[83:41]been like the only guy who was in what we were talking about earlier about the venn diagram of

[83:45]nine inch nails and something else whatever that other thing was he might have been that guy

[83:48]shadrack i just wrote for

[83:52]this one funky ass song this is the third one in a row with the johnny cash connection he also

[84:00]recorded shadrach meshach and abednego yeah i remember that so how how are how are how is this

[84:07]album still existing like when we talked about um de la soul remember like de la soul we couldn't

[84:14]find anywhere because the samples weren't cleared how how how are these guys getting away with this

[84:20]but de la soul's album is like got shut down what's the difference is it a record label thing

[84:25]was capital record label thing capital was willing to pay but de la soul's label wasn't

[84:30]yeah you can stream this i mean you can stream this everywhere it's it's easily accessible maybe

[84:36]at some point they cleared all of these and capital paid for them i mean that's part of the

[84:40]reason the bc boys are bigger for a lot of people than de la soul right is that it's just so much

[84:43]easier to find or did any of this get grandfathered in once rulings were made i don't know how that

[84:49]works but i don't know this

[84:50]this felt the closest thing we've listened to for me for this album was the de la soul album

[84:55]yeah i think that's a really good pull i like that well i think there's also a lot of public

[85:00]enemy influence too but yeah it's similar in de la soul and in style and then we have asked for

[85:05]janice which is kind of the ad of paul's boutique now russell we didn't go see paul's boutique either

[85:10]big mistake on our part uh you mentioned earlier the dust brothers rob it turns out uh uh a friend

[85:20]sent me a link earlier today and gave me a heads up on this but uh i don't know if they knew this

[85:26]part of it but the dust brothers uh where they produced this album right like they were a big

[85:30]part of kind of helping the bc boys bring all these samples in so it turns out the dust brothers

[85:35]later on also worked on with beck uh they worked with beck on odelay midnight vultures and guero

[85:40]but i gave you a song rob and i think the song is the opening song on guero which is e-pro it's got

[85:47]so it's a sample of so what you want so the dust brothers

[85:50]work with the bc boys they work with beck they take this bc boys sample to inspire

[85:55]e-pro and so it's the same drum beat in the back and it's got beck and the bc boys in the

[86:02]same song so check this song out you can it's like a mashup of both the songs that use the same sample

[86:06]yes

[86:09]i could listen to this kind of stuff all day

[86:14]this is fun

[86:15]the youtube page is

[86:20]funny because it's like a it's a mashup right and it says you idiots it's exactly the same

[86:27]drum beat you know it's not a mashup if you're using the exact same drum beat kind of thing

[86:31]but if i'm but i think i think beck actually credited them and put them in the credit put

[86:35]the bc boys in the credits or yeah for that album but i i figure you guys need to know the dust

[86:40]brothers also work with the color a couple other groups because some of rob's favorites

[86:44]believe they work with uh tone loke oh oh everybody this is me

[86:50]i'm gonna ask your favorite movies and show and i will definitely take you out of it because as

[86:55]soon as you hear my voice you realize that guy likes funky cold medina that's definitely

[87:00]he produced tone loke's album loked after dark rob have you ever listened to loke after dark

[87:06]after dark is one of the great that's a tattoo i'm getting we should have named our podcast

[87:12]loked after dark oh right the dust brothers also work with a group that we talked about recently

[87:17]it was mbop they produce

[87:19]by hansen

[87:20]did you guys know that wow they probably could have just retired then paul's boutique also did

[87:26]mbop that's fucking mind-blowing yeah so when it comes to sampling the beastie boys

[87:31]with the dust brothers producing who did it better beck did it better i mean they're better

[87:37]than mbop right amazing bc boys yes the bc boys are better than i'm gonna go out on a limb and

[87:44]make that statement now are we covering b-boy boule bass a 12-minute song that i don't know

[87:49]what's going on

[87:50]24 different uh samples

[87:53]russell it sounds like de la soul if i remember right i'm kind of reading quickly

[88:01]their record company tommy boy records was going to give them 10 royalties for that album and they

[88:07]just said here's the big middle finger interesting so they could have cleared it yeah but it sounds

[88:13]like talib quali is trying to figure out how to get it released yeah but they've been doing that

[88:18]for years i think we talked about that right about that

[88:20]sometimes it's better to take a smaller piece of a bigger pie than a bigger piece of a smaller pie

[88:26]sometimes it's better to just keep the whole pie for yourself until everybody else go fuck

[88:33]themselves it's your pie wait what are we even talking about anymore i'm so confused listen guys

[88:39]we don't have time to talk about the album anymore homemade whipped cream on the pie

[88:42]i got pie in the fridge i might need some when we're done here you could put some uh you could

[88:45]put some cashew marmalade in there whatever everyone was talking about earlier i wasn't

[88:48]listening passion fruit something

[88:50]and everybody else just acted like it was a normal thing everybody's like oh yeah i got

[88:53]ketchup i got passion fruit marmalade it's no big deal pomegranate molasses pomegranate molasses

[88:59]i got that in my i you guys i almost made what was the album we listened to that's had a song

[89:04]about a lemon the other night led zeppelin so i almost made something called a lemon pie

[89:09]which was like whiskey lemon and something else but i was missing an ingredient so i was going

[89:15]to sub it out and make a pomegranate molasses pie with pomegranate molasses and whiskey

[89:20]then i was worried i might have like a a medical medical emergency yeah no well i i do know that

[89:27]10 out of 10 doctors recommend drinking old english and orange juice so i think you're safe i think you

[89:31]made the right decision technically it's called a brass monkey rob even better uh what's a funky

[89:37]monkey listen we're not talking about the music we couldn't care less about the music doesn't

[89:41]interest us don't care about samples we care about the list okay and of course this number is

[89:46]this is coming in at a hot and ready

[89:50]125 okay is this album at 125 and i also want to point out aaron this marks we are officially

[89:58]a quarter of a way through the mission

[90:03]we are right there we we only need to do all that we've been doing

[90:09]three more times with the music getting worse and worse as we go so well you didn't have to

[90:16]add that part of it i thought it was someone argue a little better some might argue a little

[90:20]better well we'll see is this album at 125 is this a perfect place for it it's a quarter of the way

[90:26]through listen okay you look at a quarter on one side george washington the most honest man we know

[90:32]did nothing wrong only great stuff okay on the other side an eagle an animal which i could easily

[90:38]beat in a fight everybody knows that we've talked about that before i would simply punch the eagle

[90:41]into submission is this a perfect place for this album okay if you think that this is this kind of

[90:48]gets a uh hey gravy

[90:50]because it's so good that would be a rolling uh bone it should have been higher up in the list

[90:56]is this is a hey maybe because you think it's pretty good here okay it's a pretty good spot

[91:01]this is 125 that is rolling well toned if you think this is a a shady because it's kind of

[91:09]shady that is this high up it should be lower on the list and we all know that's a higher number

[91:12]that is a rolling groan we did not like it what do you think aaron balls boutique rolling well

[91:17]toned rolling bone or rolling groan

[91:20]this is actually my first time in my life going through paul's boutique i never went through i

[91:25]never went through a beastie boys phase i don't know why i've never been into them so this was a

[91:30]fun experience for me i think it's a really important album in terms of where hip-hop was

[91:36]coming from and going at the time and i think it stands as a great um sort of historical you know

[91:44]document of of where hip-hop stood at that time because it changed pretty quickly after in terms

[91:49]of the samples and what was allowed so um i think it's a little bit uneven there's some maybe some

[91:55]skippers in there but uh all in all i'm going to give it a rolling well toned some of them you

[92:00]would track you might track a couple there here and there that's true russell what do you think

[92:04]rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling groan 125 i kind of expected not to like this one i

[92:09]like the bc boys and everything but i'm a commercial hits guy it didn't have sabotage

[92:13]it didn't have fight for your right so what you want didn't have any of the bc boy songs that i

[92:17]knew so i was expecting to be like oh maybe this is too artsy for me maybe it's not what i'm going

[92:22]to enjoy but i really enjoyed it i love when they got like the tempo going and they were all i think

[92:26]aaron said you rapping in unison i love those parts of the album the samples are like really

[92:31]hard to beat it almost gives them an unfair advantage that i don't know if other groups

[92:35]could could do so i'm going to say it's rolling well toned i would probably come back and listen

[92:39]to it again and i think uh a lot of that is because of the samples that they're using but

[92:43]man these guys know how to work magic with it so i enjoyed it man what do you think rolling

[92:47]toned rolling bone or rolling grown the beastie boys and they had some samples man i don't know

[92:52]if you knew that but the sample had yeah album had some samples i know so i was i was trying to

[92:56]kind of put it all together do i like this it feels like one huge adhd trip if that makes sense

[93:03]like it just bounces around so much and moves and pivots left and right and i it's like i couldn't

[93:10]keep up with it i i don't know and so ultimately it's it's not my favorite beastie boys album and

[93:17]i don't know how much i would listen to this one again compared to other ones you know to rosie's

[93:22]point um it it seems extremely influential and i don't know if we've really talked about it too

[93:29]much but you know there is this level of the beastie boys being three white guys from new

[93:35]york that kind of allowed this opening up of hip-hop i think on some levels definitely you

[93:41]know that i think makes it even more influential that it kind of you know showed the world what

[93:47]this kind of music uh can be uh if you really dive in deep it's not all about the gangster rap i

[93:53]mean let's face it i think for a lot of white america the beastie boys was the first rap

[93:57]experience for a lot of people right like that i don't think that's you know but but they they did

[94:02]you know they they were taking what their forefathers before them did right and they're

[94:08]new york i mean they're like new yorkers through and through that's weird there's four fathers i

[94:12]mean there's six of them yeah no there's kind of there's three beastie boys forefathers

[94:17]yeah yeah it makes sense you know so ultimately you know like i don't know if i really like

[94:23]listening to this on my headphones so i'm gonna give it a rolling walking around

[94:27]son of a bitch i am not leaving my notes up on screen anymore and in fact you're incorrect

[94:33]everybody's incorrect because this gets a rolling correct finally after 125 i thought i got it right

[94:38]no this is a rolling walk with your headphones okay you miss the emphasis on that you are

[94:44]walking around in your headphones you feel like a god listening to this album

[94:47]it is so groovy and so funky now listen next up next week there are places that mary j

[94:54]mary j blige remembers some are gone and some remain it's mary j blige with my life

[95:02]if you want to hear four guys who chat and then they get off

[95:17]and ray charles modern sounds

[95:19]unusual we might end the podcast before we listen to them rob do you think your your

[95:27]your reputation as the boner and the gee guy would change at all if you were fully shaved

[95:34]hey he's getting a boner don't worry folks he's totally shaved

[95:41]okay so it doesn't look weird yes it does still it still looks super weird

[95:47]i was also wondering if if matt like the beastie boys brought the hip-hop to a broader audience i

[95:53]also wonder if this is the episode where matt is going to be the pied piper of the bidet and bring

[95:58]the bidet to middle-aged males throughout the happy to take i'd be happy to take that and run
