Mary J. Blige: My Life (1994)
[00:00]oh guys i almost started without it i always did it
[00:04]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by
[00:11]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text that celebrated the music excoriated the order
[00:16]and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts and we promise to do almost no research
[00:21]i've got nipple gongs greg can you gong me all opinions are our own unless you disagree please
[00:26]sit back and enjoy becca did it better we are all the way up to album 126 our journey through the
[00:35]next quarter of the albums god damn it i gotta edit that out i had so much energy and then i
[00:39]fucking blow it like that well see you guys later good show uh and from 1994 it's the album that
[00:45]jumped all the way up on the last time this album jumped all the way up from 281 yeah it sounds like
[00:50]my weight freshman year of college uh it's my life by mary j blige okay so no laughs on that
[00:56]so we're off to a strong start thank you so much down to 126 i would love to see those photos
[01:01]that's like if rob only if rob was only one leg and it had to do a water cut he'd be at 126
[01:07]so here's the deal okay uh you know what we're not messing around today we're gonna make this
[01:13]a quick uh we're gonna make this a quick episode let's get right yes guys listen we are
[01:19]gonna turn on the radio and let's just see what's on and you know what it could be anything it could
[01:24]be any channel i'm just gonna flip the dial let's go to a
[01:26]random station it's not a big deal everybody welcome to k-rob
[01:30]hi is this k-rob yes it is um i i just wanted to say that i miss my husband
[01:47]use the downstairs bathroom and i love it i recommend everyone does it this way
[01:53]so do we have downstairs
[01:56]downstairs bathroom
[01:56]yes upstairs good no no okay
[02:00]that's the real story i got a note from my wife she wants to talk to me
[02:08]she's mad at piss standing up because it's manly
[02:14]she doesn't want any strife so she told me
[02:20]me
[02:21]matt you need to go downstairs when you
[02:26]see
[02:27]my wife is telling me when i need to take it
[02:35]some personal time or a bathroom break
[02:41]downstairs is where i'm assigned it's where i find time
[02:48]to unwind
[02:49]so i put in something just for me
[02:54]helps keep me so clean
[02:57]i know i'm the man of my house
[03:02]some guys run their house
[03:05]i don't need to listen to my spouse
[03:09]that's the guy that runs his house
[03:11]but i go down anyway
[03:13]because i like to blast off with my
[03:19]birthday
[03:20]i got the water pressure turned up
[03:24]in there
[03:27]now the joke's on my wife
[03:32]because she never sees me
[03:35]if you see my anus it's a plus clean
[03:41]it's like a car wash for my b-u-t-t
[03:47]and i can fill myself up if i get thirsty
[03:54]when you want to hear about the greatest
[03:58]hey whoever that caller was sounded nervous
[04:03]look it up
[04:04]definitely all right
[04:05]he was
[04:06]if you want to hear from guys who chat
[04:09]and then they get off track
[04:11]i've got the perfect podcast for you jack
[04:16]beck did it better
[04:18]you make it this far and it's the first time you've said the word anus in a song
[04:21]that's actually really impressive
[04:22]yeah well you know you find a rhyme for it
[04:24]i think i like that rhyme b-u-t-t
[04:26]but the idea of matt being like i'm so thirsty
[04:29]and then using his bidet and be like i'm not thirsty anymore
[04:31]like that made me laugh so hard when i was recording it
[04:33]i left it in
[04:34]you can hear me laugh at my own joke
[04:36]all right listen
[04:37]welcome to back to better
[04:39]we are talking about mary g day blige my life
[04:42]and with me i've got three guys
[04:45]you know what they're 90s kids
[04:47]okay so they're gonna know this album like crazy
[04:48]i've got matt in minneapolis
[04:50]matt how are you doing
[04:50]uh great just great rob thanks for having me
[04:54]gotta go use the bathroom but i'll be back
[04:56]and i've got somebody who changed his name today to puffy daddy
[05:02]i've got russell at minnesota russell how are you doing
[05:05]oh guys podcasting on a tuesday night
[05:07]we're not gonna cuss and fight
[05:09]we're just gonna make it right
[05:11]oh there's work to do
[05:12]i want to get real close to you
[05:13]like matt's bidet
[05:15]i want to get you in the mood
[05:16]all we can do is think about matt's bidet
[05:19]it's all that's running through our minds
[05:20]matt's running it on his little brain downstairs
[05:24]we're just running it on his little brain downstairs
[05:24]we're just running it on his little brain downstairs
[05:24]running through our big brain upstairs
[05:26]and listen out in california i've got a guy
[05:28]now aaron actually it was
[05:30]he had a bit of a medical emergency this week
[05:32]he uh he ate six toy horses
[05:34]he accidentally ate six toy horses
[05:36]but you know what the good news was aaron
[05:38]i called the hospital
[05:39]see how are you doing
[05:40]and the doctor said your condition was stable
[05:42]condition was stable
[05:43]uh stable
[05:45]uh aaron how are you doing
[05:50]all right rob what i got will make you spend money
[05:51]let's talk about mary j blige
[05:53]nice
[05:53]i like that
[05:54]speaking of which vegas is coming up
[05:57]i am i am not going to bet this week of the playoffs
[06:00]just to get my tolerance back up
[06:03]so i'm ready
[06:03]it's going to be great
[06:06]and you guys are going to hear with our live recording
[06:08]just how bad i'm and we're going to sound in vegas
[06:10]because we're going to get
[06:11]my plan is guys we're going to get absolutely
[06:13]capital b blasted
[06:15]and do an episode
[06:16]great
[06:17]yeah
[06:18]speaking of which man before i forget
[06:19]do you want me to bring a package of gummies from new york for you
[06:23]yeah
[06:24]okay
[06:24]i can buy them so i'll bring them and that'll be no problem
[06:27]yeah
[06:27]otherwise just know what the uh dosage is would you
[06:30]so you're not giving us the 50s again
[06:32]that wasn't right
[06:33]i'm gonna keep it in the shop
[06:35]that wasn't right
[06:35]i said to russell don't have another one
[06:38]don't tell me what to do
[06:39]i'll have another one if i want to
[06:41]listen
[06:41]i literally i it was one
[06:42]we can keep this in i don't care
[06:44]it was but it was one o'clock in the afternoon
[06:46]and i could not pick up my chips
[06:47]that was as high as i've ever been in my life
[06:49]i could not
[06:50]we were playing blackjack
[06:52]and i had to go
[06:52]because i could not put in
[06:54]my next bet
[06:55]was that the one where the dealer told the same story 10 times
[06:57]were you there at that table
[06:58]no matt was gone by that
[06:59]jesus christ
[07:00]the guy told the same story
[07:02]and joe
[07:02]about a high roller
[07:03]yeah and joe and i rustled looked at each other
[07:05]we're like he just told that story the ninth time right
[07:08]like we're not crazy right
[07:09]it was one of those times where you're like this isn't fun anymore
[07:11]this is not good
[07:12]but we're gonna do it all over again
[07:14]i then had the greatest time of my life
[07:15]looking at the jimmy the margaritaville color green
[07:19]and thinking about all the other things that are that same color
[07:22]like mountain dew
[07:23]uh
[07:24]slime from nickelodeon
[07:26]nickelodeon slime
[07:27]and it just cracked me up that that was such a unique color
[07:30]the only disappointing thing about it is we're going a week later this year right
[07:34]and i did get a text from the richfield guys
[07:36]wondering if we were going to meet up on saturday night at the king's car
[07:40]and i had to inform they weren't
[07:42]and so they may or may not be trying to bribe the bartender
[07:47]into looking out for one of you guys who they have a picture of
[07:50]to see if they can get a shot the next week
[07:52]that was of course the infamous time
[07:54]where they somehow put a shot into a giant draft beer draft glass
[07:58]and we're like here somebody drink this
[07:59]and somebody drank it
[08:00]and then that's the next thing i know the next morning
[08:02]we're looking through the photos
[08:03]and we're like going through all these different casinos
[08:05]i was like i don't remember that
[08:06]don't remember that
[08:07]uh not great
[08:08]listen let's get right into the voicemail
[08:09]this is a positive voicemail song
[08:14]on the back line 802-277-BECK
[08:22]that's 802-277-BECK
[08:23]i almost called you a dumb shit just out of habit
[08:29]i fucking did it
[08:30]this is a quick one
[08:31]i fucking did it
[08:32]did aaron hear about gangster boo or ip
[08:35]i yes aaron so that is a caller from memphis
[08:39]who was wondering if you heard about gangster boo
[08:42]now aaron can you explain what's going on
[08:44]yes gangster boo sadly passed away last weekend
[08:47]or i think the weekend of new year's perhaps
[08:49]and she is uh one of the original members of three six mafia
[08:52]one of the hardest
[08:53]rappers to ever come along
[08:55]and the hardest rap groups that ever came out
[08:57]she got her start
[08:58]i read a really great
[08:59]eulogy of her by tom bryan
[09:03]who's an excellent rap blogger
[09:04]and she got her start at age 15 in three six
[09:09]and was just
[09:10]you hear her right there
[09:12]she was full of swagger
[09:14]full of life
[09:16]and unfortunately yeah
[09:17]passed away this last weekend
[09:18]but i do appreciate our listener reaching out
[09:20]and one of the things i want to say is
[09:23]if you think a little kim is dirty like gangster boo's got got some stuff for you
[09:28]i don't know wait a minute now i'm not more interested
[09:31]who are the who are the dirtiest female rappers of all time here
[09:35]and if you were going to do a mini list
[09:36]who are the dirtiest female rappers ever
[09:39]it's like there's gotta be him on there or not
[09:41]yeah it's gotta be little kim and gangster boo
[09:43]oh man i don't know
[09:46]is the lady of rage dirty or no
[09:48]not not that dirty i don't think
[09:50]not the like
[09:50]i mean i i think that
[09:52]who's the gal now
[09:53]oh what's her name
[09:53]megan the stallion is
[09:55]yeah
[09:55]is trying to get to get into
[09:56]megan the stallion
[09:57]she's trying to break into that top two
[09:59]she's fantastic
[10:00]yeah
[10:00]yeah
[10:00]i think she's probably the most talented
[10:02]yeah
[10:03]now i want to
[10:04]i want to make something very clear with you
[10:06]i had a date tonight to make love to my wife
[10:08]and instead she found out i was doing the podcast
[10:10]she's like oh we'll just move it
[10:11]and i was like
[10:12]so i just want to show you guys how committed i am to the podcast that i'm here
[10:16]okay
[10:16]um
[10:17]if we get through fast enough
[10:19]i was thinking to myself
[10:20]is there still time or no
[10:20]if if she said to me
[10:22]if she said to me
[10:23]one thing
[10:23]that like they say in wop
[10:25]you know what i mean
[10:26]like if she was like
[10:26]oh use your nose
[10:27]like you credit card swipe
[10:28]i would in my pants
[10:30]like that would be the hottest thing
[10:32]ever
[10:33]instead of like what i normally hear
[10:36]which is like
[10:36]oh my hair
[10:36]ouch
[10:37]ouch my hair
[10:37]you're on my hair
[10:38]you're on my hair
[10:39]i think i've got jenny's number
[10:40]i could just send her a quick text
[10:42]it feels like
[10:42]it seems like she's not listening
[10:44]she could really pick up some pointers
[10:46]matt what exactly would that text say
[10:48]uh
[10:50]rob would like you to quote
[10:51]the song that you wrote for me
[10:53]wet ass pussy to him
[10:54]yeah
[10:55]oh yeah
[10:56]yeah
[10:57]as foreplay
[10:58]first of all
[10:58]see what happens
[10:59]i don't think she knows what that song is
[11:00]second of all
[11:00]she wouldn't do it
[11:01]like that's not
[11:02]i mean rob just said
[11:03]it's basically five play
[11:04]so she doesn't even have to make the date
[11:06]she just recites the lyrics
[11:07]and that's it
[11:08]yeah she might like that actually
[11:11]less less contact
[11:12]i love
[11:15]i'll say it again
[11:16]i love dirty female rappers
[11:17]i just i cannot get enough of it
[11:19]there's something about it that's
[11:20]i mean it really deep down
[11:22]it's super deep
[11:23]super erotic
[11:23]don't you think like
[11:24]it's just
[11:25]i mean honestly
[11:26]beyonce kind of gets an honorable mention now
[11:28]like she really is up to her
[11:29]up to her dirty
[11:30]dirty lyrics game
[11:31]so i i think she gets a shout out too
[11:33]oh man i just i i don't know
[11:36]russell what do you think about dirty female rappers
[11:38]do you
[11:38]does it tickle your pickle
[11:40]or what's going on here
[11:40]i i swiped on as many dirty female rappers
[11:43]when i was back in the
[11:44]in the dating game
[11:45]and oh
[11:45]a lot a lot of swipe rights
[11:47]a lot a lot of matches rob
[11:49]how many licks does it take to the
[11:51]get to the middle of the tootsie pop
[11:53]or whatever
[11:53]there we go
[11:54]yeah that was the brat right
[11:55]the brat's gotta be up there too
[11:57]is foreplay one word or two
[11:59]f-o-r-e-p-l-a-y
[12:03]is that how you spell foreplay
[12:04]oh my god you're sending the text
[12:07]that would be
[12:08]that would be a great opening bumble line
[12:10]wouldn't it matt
[12:11]is foreplay what two words
[12:12]or one word or two
[12:13]dirty rappers is what russ calls all the
[12:17]used up dental dams on his bedroom floor
[12:19]oh geez
[12:20]what
[12:21]oh jeez
[12:23]it's time to see what everybody's up to
[12:25]can you imagine going into like a duane reed
[12:27]and being like
[12:27]hey do you use any dental dams
[12:29]i mean at some point you just put a condom
[12:33]on your tongue right
[12:34]what
[12:35]squeeze the tip before you put it on
[12:39]it could go anywhere
[12:40]uh rolling going aaron
[12:42]how's it going with you
[12:42]it's going great
[12:44]i have made a musical rediscovery
[12:46]over the last
[12:47]month
[12:48]it's been a long time since we talked
[12:49]i think the last time we chatted
[12:51]we russell asked what my son's
[12:53]thought of the nine inch nails record
[12:54]or maybe the youtube record
[12:55]and i said he was pretty
[12:56]yeah so we didn't get through much youtube
[12:59]because he was really stuck on elvis costello
[13:01]but i got tired over christmas break
[13:03]of elvis costello
[13:04]so i thought well maybe i'll try some green day
[13:06]and see what he thinks
[13:07]so i put on
[13:08]there you go
[13:08]i put dukey on
[13:10]favorite
[13:10]and from it's eddie's favorite
[13:12]well yeah
[13:13]boulevard of broken dreams
[13:15]but yeah eddie eddie's into green day now
[13:16]so yeah it's so great
[13:18]like i put it on he immediately was like
[13:20]he said who's this song artist
[13:21]he wanted to know right away
[13:23]are you talking about mike dirt
[13:26]yeah right
[13:28]and i gotta say guys
[13:30]i'm i might have a new policy
[13:31]that everything is going to be rolling
[13:33]grown until we get to
[13:34]until we get to do
[13:35]that album is so good
[13:37]i don't understand how we haven't heard it yet
[13:39]it's so good
[13:40]and i know it's
[13:41]you know what year it came out
[13:42]you know what year it came out rosie
[13:43]i do because we talked about this
[13:45]1994
[13:45]1994
[13:47]greatest year of all time
[13:49]you hear aaron's kid walking around going
[13:51]all by myself
[13:52]it's like oh my god
[13:59]he found the mystery song
[14:00]how do you even do that anymore
[14:01]am i just down
[14:03]aaron is your
[14:04]is your son at the age
[14:06]where a term dookie
[14:07]is super funny to him
[14:08]or is he still a little below that age
[14:10]or where's he at in the
[14:11]the potty humor
[14:13]russell i just want to stop everybody
[14:15]russell that's a great question
[14:16]poop is still absolutely at the
[14:19]at the top of the heap for humor
[14:21]um but he's still at the top of the heap
[14:22]he did not know what the term dookie meant
[14:24]so once we told him then yeah he was over the moon
[14:27]but i did get my nephew a birthday card this last weekend
[14:30]and he's turning seven
[14:31]so he's in the prime age
[14:33]matt you rob
[14:34]you you might know better than i do
[14:36]but he seems like he's in the prime age
[14:37]where about every 10 minutes is some sort of
[14:40]poop or fart joke from him right
[14:42]and that's yeah
[14:43]so i played right into it as an uncle
[14:45]and i got him a birthday card
[14:46]where it had kind of like the christmas poo on the front
[14:49]and in the middle of the card it said
[14:51]it's your duty to have a good time
[14:52]and he got a kick out of it being his duty
[14:55]to have a good day
[14:56]i mean poop jokes never really get old
[14:58]you know my kids thought that was so funny
[15:00]when they were seven
[15:01]uh the works of chaucer
[15:03]they love the canterbury tales okay
[15:05]because my kids are actually super educated
[15:07]oh the baker ho ho ho
[15:10]what a funny story or whatever
[15:11]i had to read that shit in high school
[15:13]it's terrible
[15:13]the works we've been getting into are calvin and hobbes
[15:16]we got a calvin and hobbes book from the library
[15:18]and he will not let us return this thing
[15:20]we're just continually renewing it
[15:21]and i think that's a good thing
[15:22]i uh i didn't realize until reading this
[15:25]that that hobbes is actually a stuffed tiger
[15:29]and everyone else knows that that hobbes is stuffed
[15:31]and he comes alive just for calvin
[15:33]i always just thought he was like a figment of calvin's imagination
[15:36]never understood that hobbes is actually a real life
[15:41]did you have a childhood
[15:42]what the fuck is your problem
[15:44]i have been nice to you for a couple episodes
[15:45]i don't know
[15:46]but this is ridiculous
[15:47]like do you think that garfield actually talks to john arbuckle
[15:49]like you need to go on a whole comics discovery
[15:52]no it's thought
[15:52]bubbles look at his thought bubbles every time he does it
[15:54]what do you mean garfield's not actually talking to the man
[15:58]oh my god it's fucking thought bubbles
[16:00]i'm surrounded by idiots
[16:02]so really like garfield's not he's just thinking to himself
[16:05]yeah he's a cat
[16:07]he's a cat
[16:08]but it's a comic book
[16:10]look at it's all thought bubbles
[16:12]garfield never says anything
[16:13]although in this comic he is saying z
[16:14]so i think that's snoring
[16:16]but there you go
[16:16]he's no look at he's this one
[16:19]oh he's just thinking the whole time
[16:21]while john arbuckle is talking
[16:22]yeah it's a cat
[16:24]so you really i i'll tell you what
[16:26]i was a calvin and hobbes addict growing up
[16:29]like i had every book i read them constantly
[16:31]and i read them till i was like way too old
[16:33]i read them till i was like 16 18
[16:35]like religiously i'd read them all the time
[16:37]and then you know what comic i really got into
[16:39]dilbert for some reason
[16:41]i love dilbert
[16:42]i love the work-paced comedy
[16:43]and then all of a sudden it turned out
[16:44]probably not
[16:46]i mean that is a concern
[16:47]like calvin hobbes is like in the wrong hands
[16:50]it could be a gateway to to certain
[16:52]attitudes you know like the
[16:54]you like you don't want to get too straight
[16:56]too far from sincerity at this age right
[16:57]like you don't want to get into sarcasm too early
[16:59]but yeah i didn't realize
[17:01]no i got into sarcasm really earlier
[17:03]and it actually worked out great
[17:04]no big deal don't worry about it
[17:05]or if he starts getting into garfield too early
[17:08]he'll just eat a lot of lasagna
[17:09]and have a weight problem
[17:10]yeah
[17:11]he likes the garfield
[17:14]there's a netflix garfield show he likes
[17:16]and garfield swims in a sea of marinara
[17:19]and then the final thing i gotta tell you guys
[17:22]i don't know if you've seen it
[17:22]i have a i mean you guys know i have problems
[17:24]but i've realized i have a i have a new problem
[17:26]which is that i can't stop buying tote bags
[17:31]like i just have too many
[17:32]huge problem
[17:36]yeah i went into the wine shop the other day
[17:38]that i've been going to forever
[17:39]and it was like oh we finally have our own tote bag
[17:41]with our logo on it
[17:42]i was like well obviously i need to spend $34 on this tote bag
[17:45]like no wait a minute
[17:46]$34 for a wine tote bag
[17:49]you know what
[17:50]it was a bag who bag
[17:51]i'm hitting you
[17:52]and i haven't hit this one in a while
[17:53]that was errant
[17:55]second left field take of the week
[17:57]i don't know what i'm gonna do
[18:00]i'm holding one here that i got from my brother's resort
[18:04]yes
[18:05]a tote bag should always be a free giveaway
[18:07]you should never have to pay for a tote bag
[18:09]or like two bucks
[18:10]russell did you hear how much he paid for the tote bag
[18:12]i did i didn't want it
[18:14]it's a very nice bag
[18:15]it's a nice bag
[18:15]$34 for a tote bag
[18:18]i would tell that wine store to kiss my cork
[18:20]if they offered me $34 for a tote bag
[18:22]that tote bag better
[18:24]that tote bag better
[18:25]you know what i you know what i think
[18:26]if aaron put his son's lightsaber in the tote bag
[18:33]it would be the same cost as one year of college
[18:35]yeah that's an idea
[18:38]yeah this tote bag doubles as a dental dam
[18:40]does anybody else have an addiction that they
[18:43]or is it tote bags for everybody
[18:45]i well mine's a little bit different
[18:47]is that i cannot find the proper bag
[18:50]like all in one bag
[18:51]and i keep trying to find the proper bag
[18:52]whether it be a backpack
[18:54]whether it be uh like an airplane carry-on
[18:57]i cannot find the right one
[18:58]either it doesn't have enough room
[19:00]for like my second pair of shoes
[19:02]or it doesn't have a water carrier
[19:04]you know to put a thing
[19:05]or you can't easily sleep
[19:06]i cannot find a perfect bag
[19:08]and so i am ever on the quest
[19:11]to find the most perfect bag
[19:13]i don't want it too big
[19:14]don't want it too small
[19:15]i don't want like a thing over my
[19:18]you know i it's got to either have wheels
[19:21]or i got to be able to put on my bag
[19:22]but it can't be too big on your back
[19:23]so i don't know
[19:24]that's my uh problem
[19:25]is i keep trying to find the most perfect bag
[19:28]for work and for travel
[19:30]but who knows
[19:31]yeah it's bad
[19:32]you know what my wife's addiction is
[19:34]and this is sick
[19:35]it's powerlifting knee sleeves
[19:38]i bet she has eight pairs of knee sleeves
[19:42]all different sizes for what she gains
[19:44]or loses weight
[19:45]and she buys new ones all the time
[19:46]people be like this one's really good
[19:47]and she just buys it
[19:48]i'm like what
[19:49]i've used the same pair of knee sleeves
[19:51]for like the last five years
[19:52]it's not good for me
[19:52]it's fine
[19:52]it's it's fucking knee sleeves
[19:54]you should probably wash them
[19:55]sometimes i do
[19:56]my knees don't smell that bad
[19:58]so that's it that's my problem
[20:00]uh how's it going rolling going with russell
[20:02]rolling going things are going well
[20:04]do you guys know we're coming out of the holidays
[20:06]and i need to go to the dating advice corner
[20:09]to get some feedback on how i may have handled
[20:11]some situations over the last few weeks
[20:13]a little update
[20:14]a little update
[20:15]pretty warm there
[20:17]as a secondary note i'm also single
[20:22]i'll i might be after this episode but we'll find out
[20:26]you keep saying that so so as you guys know we talked a few weeks ago about how
[20:31]what the rules are with going to um someone you're dating's parents house or
[20:35]their family's house whether how much time you have to spend
[20:39]do you have to spend the night those types of things so i thought i could
[20:42]um fill you guys in on how this situation went for me
[20:45]um tell you how i handled some of the situations you can tell me whether i did
[20:49]the right thing or didn't do the right thing is that all right to you
[20:52]sounds great so i think the first question has to be
[20:55]um especially for people who live in minnesota minneapolis area i know east coast has had bad
[21:00]weather recently what is the rule about going to um an in-laws or someone you're dating's parents
[21:07]or their family if the roads are really bad let's say the government is saying advising you not to
[21:14]go on the roads not to travel if it were your own family it's easy to just say no we're not doing it
[21:20]but when it's someone else's family it's easy to just say no we're not doing it
[21:22]but when it's someone else's family it's easy to just say no we're not doing it
[21:22]it's a little different what are the rules about traveling
[21:25]it's a little different what are the rules about traveling
[21:25]um under treacherous conditions to uh someone's house
[21:29]um under treacherous conditions to uh someone's house
[21:29]um under treacherous conditions to uh someone's house don't do it you don't do it i have i have
[21:31]don't do it you don't do it i have i have
[21:31]don't do it you don't do it i have i have personal experience with this we we
[21:33]personal experience with this we we
[21:33]personal experience with this we we delayed our flight because we didn't
[21:34]delayed our flight because we didn't
[21:34]delayed our flight because we didn't want to travel under the treacherous
[21:35]want to travel under the treacherous
[21:35]want to travel under the treacherous conditions i'm on your side russell
[21:38]And did you, did you face any grief over that decision or anything, Aaron, or no?
[21:41]No, I don't think so.
[21:43]I think people understood.
[21:44]Russell, let's, let me just put it this way.
[21:46]I think there's a certain type of person in this world where if they really want to go
[21:50]do something, you just got to suck it up and go do it.
[21:53]Otherwise your life is going to be capital M miserable for a while.
[21:56]You just, if they say, listen, this is my family.
[21:59]I know we could die.
[22:00]Let's go drive through a snowstorm and go see him.
[22:04]You just, it's just, your life's going to be, honestly, if you go 360 and fall off a
[22:09]cliff, that will be better than the, uh, what will happen if you don't, if you just say,
[22:13]oh, I don't want to go.
[22:14]And then it's a little snowy and icy and stuff like that.
[22:16]So, so it was a little snowy and icy and we were making it, I believe it was, um, under
[22:21]the 90 minute rule, as you guys said, I looked it up.
[22:24]So it was under the 90 minute rule, but, uh, made our way down to this, this place about
[22:28]90 minutes away.
[22:29]Um, and about 20 minutes in the drive, you realize it's horrible road conditions.
[22:34]You can barely stay on the road.
[22:35]You can't see.
[22:36]And this is even in like the highways where super icy, um, nerve wracking, white knuckling
[22:41]at the whole time.
[22:42]Now, can I, can I just ask a question real quick?
[22:44]Yeah.
[22:44]Was anybody else in the car just talking to you this whole time?
[22:47]Like maybe nothing was happening.
[22:48]It wasn't a big deal.
[22:49]They were just chatting away and maybe you were trying to focus on the road.
[22:52]You got really stressed about it.
[22:53]No, for the most part, this person was very understanding that the road conditions were
[22:57]good.
[22:57]The only discussion we had, I've got a question though, which, which day was this?
[23:01]Was it Friday, Saturday, Thursday?
[23:03]Like.
[23:03]Sunday, which day, which day of that weekend was it?
[23:06]I don't, I'd have to go look.
[23:08]Let's say it's Christmas.
[23:09]Let's say it's Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve, whatever day it was.
[23:12]You still know everything was like, don't drive that day.
[23:15]So we, we decided to drive.
[23:17]We were, we were informed.
[23:18]We were informed and we look in it.
[23:20]Certain roads in this general vicinity are closed.
[23:23]They are closed at this point.
[23:27]So our strategy is we'll wait a little bit later in the afternoon to when they're open.
[23:31]Cause that makes sense, right?
[23:33]We got to just wait.
[23:33]Just wait for them to be cleared and then it won't be so bad.
[23:35]But the, the first, the one question I would have is if you're going on a trip
[23:39]like this and Google maps tells you to go one way and the person you're riding
[23:44]with, let's call them your shotgun person is telling you to go a different way.
[23:48]And they've driven this route before.
[23:50]Do you listen to Google maps or do you listen to your shotgun person?
[23:53]Google maps, a hundred percent.
[23:55]Google maps, Google maps.
[23:57]Absolutely.
[23:58]I can, I can tell you some people when you get out into maybe, I don't know,
[24:01]maybe like a very country area.
[24:03]Like the roads they want you to take are barely roads.
[24:06]They are like little trails through cornfields and there's no way they're going to be plowed
[24:10]whatsoever.
[24:10]I think you got to stick with Google maps, but honestly, if I'm in that situation again,
[24:15]Russell, you got to listen to them.
[24:16]Otherwise your life is just going to be miserable.
[24:18]That's the way it is.
[24:18]Yeah.
[24:19]You're out there going through Glencoe and Silver Lake and you don't know what the hell
[24:22]street you're supposed to turn on.
[24:23]I'd stick with Google maps too.
[24:25]So I did go with Google maps.
[24:27]I did hear about this about halfway when I was going down a cliff in Henderson, terrified.
[24:33]I, we were going to fall off the cliff that they said, well, the only bad part of this
[24:37]route is now we've got to go back up the hill, which is even worse than going down, which
[24:42]my shotgun person told me, um, at that point in the trip, but I didn't listen to them.
[24:47]I decided to go with Google maps.
[24:48]I don't know if it was the right decision or not, but I once spun a three 60 on that
[24:52]very hill.
[24:53]I know exactly what you're talking about in a very similar situation.
[24:56]I'm just going to no comment and say that nobody mentioned that a similar incident to
[25:00]me during this trip, Rob.
[25:01]Well,
[25:02]if you guys are both on this road, it must be a pretty popular road.
[25:05]Then if you've both traveled, I would travel to the same place, right?
[25:09]Russ and I are both taking that road less traveled.
[25:12]So let's say hypothetically, a few minutes after I get to this road where Rob maybe has
[25:16]spun out in his life, I realize there is no way I can drive home that night.
[25:21]I can't leave in the dark because you can literally barely see in the daytime, the road
[25:29]you understand that like you have to.
[25:32]You have to make a choice and you have to commit.
[25:34]There's no, we can't drive back at night.
[25:36]What are you saying?
[25:38]I, yeah, I'm just picturing, I'm picturing Russell is talking out of the left side of
[25:43]his mouth on the way out.
[25:44]God, we should be going.
[25:45]No, we could, we should not be in this.
[25:47]And then on the way home, it's, oh, we can get through this.
[25:50]We'll make it home.
[25:51]No problem.
[25:53]We're not going to handle anything.
[25:54]So we, so I make the decision about 20 minutes from our destination because I, I like, I
[26:01]don't know if.
[26:02]I don't know.
[26:02]I don't know.
[26:02]I don't know.
[26:02]I can be a nervous driver.
[26:04]If I'm by myself, it usually doesn't bother me, but when other people are with me, I tend
[26:09]to be a nervous driver if the roads are bad.
[26:11]And I was like, I can't see the road in the middle of the day when the sun's out.
[26:15]I don't see how we can go back at night in this.
[26:17]Right?
[26:17]No, of course.
[26:19]So, so I make the call with you.
[26:21]I tell the shotgun partner in my car.
[26:23]I bet they have lots of toothbrushes there.
[26:25]Actually, you actually never need to bring one.
[26:26]It's not a big deal.
[26:27]You've got to tell your family.
[26:29]We have to stay the night.
[26:30]I can't, I can't drive out in this.
[26:31]I'll lose my mind.
[26:32]So we are officially staying the night despite being at 89 miles away.
[26:37]So the plan worked.
[26:40]So the plan works.
[26:41]So we get there and the question, it's like a Venus flytrap.
[26:45]Russell goes in.
[26:45]He's like, Oh, what is this delicious nectar?
[26:47]I'm just going to have a little sip.
[26:48]And next thing you know, everything's closing around him and stuck.
[26:50]So speaking of things being stuck.
[26:53]So I, I am a planner.
[26:55]I, I, I am always prepared.
[26:58]I bring stuff with me just in case.
[27:01]So like I have a bag.
[27:02]I have a backpack with the clothes in it, just in case I need something on a trip like that.
[27:06]Right?
[27:06]Right.
[27:07]And we get there and immediately are my shotgun partner tells me, well, they don't have any change of clothes if we're staying the night.
[27:13]So they need to go to town because they need a change of clothes.
[27:16]So we get there and immediately my shotgun partner and five of the family members jump in a truck and leave me at the house with three, with three of the family members that I don't know very well.
[27:30]What are your thoughts on being left with random?
[27:32]Family members that you've maybe only met once or twice in your life.
[27:35]It's a good test.
[27:36]It's a good test for you.
[27:37]I, I, I applaud this shotgun rider of yours or whoever.
[27:41]They were really thinking through.
[27:42]Yeah.
[27:42]Is this are thinking through this?
[27:44]I can just.
[27:44]One, they trapped you there.
[27:45]Two, they trapped you with some family.
[27:47]You don't know.
[27:48]I mean, they're, yeah, they're, this is some checkers versus chess being played by the shotgun.
[27:52]You think it was on purpose you're saying?
[27:54]Oh, for sure.
[27:55]Yeah.
[27:55]For sure.
[27:56]They're, they're putting the, they're, they're dropping in.
[27:58]They're, they're seeing, they're like putting little spies around.
[28:00]Russell, my advice there is just start.
[28:02]Drinking.
[28:02]I mean, what are you going to do?
[28:03]You're just like, Hey, you're, you're in it.
[28:05]Just start drinking, loosen up a little bit.
[28:06]Talk with that family.
[28:07]I will say this.
[28:09]Yeah.
[28:10]Hey, Hey, give me your phones.
[28:12]I'm going to download a podcast for you.
[28:13]They were all very nice.
[28:15]They were all very hospitable.
[28:16]The shotgun partner's mother actually offered me wine immediately when I got there.
[28:21]Very hospitable people.
[28:22]Very nice.
[28:22]So it wasn't awkward or anything.
[28:24]We, we had a good time and, and, but there were definitely family members that had been
[28:28]there for like three days and had been stuck in the house.
[28:31]And the.
[28:32]The moment they had a chance to get out, like half the people jumped in the truck and we're
[28:36]like, yeah, we're going to the store.
[28:37]The one thing I did is I didn't know if these people, if they drink at holiday events or
[28:44]something like that, if we're supposed to bring anything, I brought some wine down just
[28:47]in case, like, it can't hurt to bring it and people can drink it if they want.
[28:50]So, but I, I brought more than enough.
[28:53]I'll just put it that way.
[28:54]So my next question is, is if you're at, if you're stuck overnight for something like
[28:58]that, is there a limit on how many glasses of wine or how many drinks?
[29:02]You can have, can you do whatever you want?
[29:04]Do you have to follow like a brother-in-law's lead?
[29:07]If they start having more drinks, can you have more?
[29:09]What's the rules?
[29:09]Wait, did you refer to him as a brother-in-law?
[29:12]You know what I'm, you know what I'm, you know what I'm implying?
[29:16]If it's, if it's, if it's your shotgun, your shotgun partner's brother is, if he's having
[29:22]some drinks, can you, you follow his lead or what's the, what's the rule?
[29:25]You got to know yourself, right?
[29:28]I mean, I, I, I cannot follow anybody down.
[29:32]I don't know if it's a shot game or slamming beers or anything like that, like that, that
[29:35]would ruin it for me, but you know, you got to know your own game, don't you?
[29:39]If you can hang or not.
[29:40]So what if, what if I'm saying, I think I'm the leader in the pack, but I don't want to
[29:44]make it clear that I'm the leader of the pack by always being the guy who's going up to
[29:48]get another glass of wine.
[29:49]If that makes sense.
[29:50]I mean, honestly, to tell you the truth, Russell, I think you do that first time down there
[29:54]is like, that's, you gotta behave.
[29:57]You gotta behave yourself, right?
[29:58]Like you gotta be good.
[29:59]You gotta do maybe one or two or three or four.
[30:02]Less than you would normally do.
[30:03]Like, I think that would be a good, I think that's a good thing.
[30:07]Now I would say maybe if you've been down there a bunch of times, okay.
[30:10]A couple of times you could just get absolutely blasted and nobody cares at all.
[30:14]It is your time to do whatever you want because everybody thinks you're wonderful for being
[30:18]with, you know, just being there in the first place.
[30:21]That's what I would do.
[30:21]I think it's just about, you know, it's about managing the perception.
[30:24]So why is difficult if they see you getting up to do the refill?
[30:27]That's, that's problematic, but if you can find a way to do those refills on the slide,
[30:32]maybe keep your glass at the same level all the time, so it's never empty, you know, or
[30:36]if you, if you switch from wine to something else, you know, you get the, you get the tumbler
[30:39]full of a liquid with ice in it and you know, you just roll with that for, for the night
[30:44]and nobody knows exactly what old Russ is drinking, but he's feeling good.
[30:47]An opaque glass.
[30:49]That is a classic move.
[30:50]An opaque glass.
[30:51]And you start with just putting Diet Coke in there and you pour it right at the table
[30:53]and you just, you just have a big Diet Coke and you're like, hope this doesn't keep me
[30:57]up tonight.
[30:57]You know what I mean?
[30:58]And the next thing you know, you're in the bathroom putting a bunch of whiskey in there.
[31:02]Oh, but just got to go back to the bathroom real quick.
[31:03]They hear you moving the toilet tank around.
[31:05]Hey, what is that guy doing in there?
[31:06]I kind of thought the key was just to get one person on your side.
[31:09]As long as you have one person in the building who's kind of on your team, I think that's
[31:13]the way to go.
[31:14]So at, at this house, there was a gentleman there who, um, nobody was ever offering to
[31:19]get him a glass of wine when they got up.
[31:20]A lot of times people get up, they'd say, Hey Aaron, do you need some Rob?
[31:23]Do you need Matt?
[31:23]Do you need something?
[31:24]Um, and no one was offering this gentleman anything and he kind of made a point about
[31:29]that.
[31:29]So the next time I got up to grab a glass of wine, I said,
[31:31]Sir, can I grab you anything while I'm up?
[31:34]And all of a sudden he's on team Russ.
[31:35]You know what I'm saying?
[31:36]Does that make sense?
[31:37]How could you resist?
[31:38]We're all on team Russ.
[31:40]I mean, let's just do it.
[31:41]You want to make sure it's not the, the, the outlaw of the family, right?
[31:44]You don't want to be the excommunicated uncle that you're.
[31:47]Hey Russell, you want to do go do Coke with me in the bathroom?
[31:51]The guy that everybody's trying to not have drink anymore.
[31:54]So either way that the night's going good.
[32:01]I find.
[32:01]I find like all these Christmas cookies come out there.
[32:04]There's not a better, like when you, when you find your groove of, Oh, there's a ton
[32:07]of Christmas cookies.
[32:08]I can have as much as I want.
[32:10]No one cares.
[32:11]Like they want you to eat.
[32:12]Oh, try everything.
[32:13]Right.
[32:13]That's what they're all there for.
[32:14]And I've hit my groove.
[32:17]Like I'm, I'm having a bunch of wine, but I'm not overdoing it.
[32:20]So I'm doing good.
[32:20]Um, a good time and everything.
[32:22]I was curious about this though.
[32:23]I was talking with one of the people who lived at this house and I asked him cause they've
[32:28]got a bunch of real nice couch set up.
[32:30]It's very cool.
[32:30]And I asked him, I said, well, Hey,
[32:31]Where do you normally, where do you normally sit when you're here?
[32:35]And he said, well, actually I sit right where you were at, but I, but, but you're a guest.
[32:39]So I didn't say anything.
[32:40]So what do you, what do you guys do?
[32:42]He didn't go out of his way to say, Hey, you're in my spot.
[32:44]But when I asked, I said, where do you sit?
[32:46]He was like, well, you were actually in my spot.
[32:49]What do you, do you guys have ever sat in someone's spot?
[32:51]How do you handle that?
[32:52]Russell?
[32:53]You are now the king of the castle.
[32:55]You could tell that whole family to go eat shit because this is Russell's world.
[33:01]They're just living in it.
[33:03]Oh, I think that's a tough spot because you can't just get up immediately.
[33:09]Like you can't, you can't, you can't like just say like, Oh, so sorry.
[33:12]And get up.
[33:13]You have to figure out a way to let everybody save face and maybe make it up at a later
[33:17]date, but you have to just say thank you and enjoy it for that moment.
[33:21]So again, it was not, there was no, he didn't say it.
[33:23]The person didn't say anything to me.
[33:25]I just asked and it turned out the spot I'd been sitting in for most of the time while
[33:29]I was there was kind of his spot, but he was very good.
[33:31]He was very gracious about it.
[33:32]So that was very nice of him.
[33:33]But the, I got, I get through the first night.
[33:36]Everything's great.
[33:37]Everyone's we play some games.
[33:38]Everyone's having fun.
[33:39]His bed is whose bed is this that I'm sleeping in this bed is so comfortable.
[33:41]I love it.
[33:42]Which woman do you, which woman do you usually sleep in bed with?
[33:46]Well, I guess it's fine.
[33:49]What share am I sleeping?
[33:50]Okay.
[33:51]Porridge.
[33:52]Which bowl of porridge is my porridge?
[33:53]Oh, okay.
[33:54]Russell locks to the three bears.
[33:56]Shouldn't have.
[33:57]So everything goes, everything goes well the night, the night, that night.
[34:01]So the next day the goal was eventually to get to my family's.
[34:05]We realize it's probably not happening because of the roads, but I'm fine with that.
[34:10]There's no worries there.
[34:11]And so we eventually decide, well, my shotgun writer has another family event at a different
[34:18]person's house.
[34:19]So at an aunt and uncle's house, what is the rule?
[34:21]Are you obligated to go to two family events at different homes within a 24 hour period?
[34:26]Yep.
[34:27]What are you going to do if you say no, what's your option?
[34:31]I'm just going to stay here and kind of roam us through your guys' stuff.
[34:34]I don't know.
[34:35]It's a big deal.
[34:36]Like I'll just stick here.
[34:37]It's no big deal.
[34:38]I don't think it was sticking there.
[34:39]It was, we're either going home.
[34:40]The day is done or we're going to another, another family type Christmas event within
[34:45]the same day.
[34:46]So the last question I had, so everything's going well here, but I, you know, when you
[34:50]go somewhere, people are very gracious.
[34:51]They want to offer you a drink.
[34:52]So I get there and one of the people that own this house insists that I have a beer.
[34:58]So I grab a beer from them.
[34:59]They give me a beer.
[35:00]It's very nice.
[35:01]The beer.
[35:02]And then another person who lives at this house comes up and insists that I try this
[35:06]Scotch that they have.
[35:08]They're a big Scotch drinker.
[35:09]They want me to try this Scotch.
[35:10]I finally, I just give in fine.
[35:12]What?
[35:13]Fine.
[35:14]I'm happy to try it.
[35:15]Now I'm the guy who's holding two drinks.
[35:16]I'm sitting on the couch, two drinks, and this is when everyone descends on the football
[35:20]room.
[35:21]And now I'm, I'm the new guy who's holding two drinks at one time.
[35:25]How do you handle that?
[35:31]Yeah, that's a, uh, that's not a great look, Russell, you just don't, you just hand one
[35:43]to somebody on the couch next to you.
[35:46]So essentially I just pounded the beer as quick as I could, got rid of the bottle and
[35:49]then, uh, then, and then it sat there with the Scotch.
[35:52]That's perfect.
[35:53]That is so funny though.
[35:54]Russell, you picture like, oh, okay.
[35:55]Yeah.
[35:56]I'll have the second drink.
[35:57]And then everybody comes in and you're sitting there.
[35:58]It was not optimal timing.
[36:01]But I will say everyone was very nice.
[36:04]There's nothing, um, those types of things can be intimidating, but when everyone, everyone
[36:08]is very nice to you and very gracious and lets you into their home, it's, it's a very
[36:11]nice thing.
[36:12]So I had a great time at both places and I think I survived each of them, but, um, we'll
[36:16]see.
[36:17]I might be cut off from wine, Christmas cookies and other things.
[36:19]Next time I go to any of these places, okay, Russell, when we're done with this podcast,
[36:23]we'll have a real conversation about how it went when you really Matt Roland going, how's
[36:27]it going with you?
[36:28]Uh, good.
[36:29]Good.
[36:30]I got, man.
[36:31]I got, I've got a, I've got a problem.
[36:34]I think I do so well taking these notes.
[36:36]You guys can see you've got the app on this thing.
[36:38]You're typing now.
[36:39]You're not even, I mean, and I, I've got the third one now that I have no idea what the
[36:43]fuck it means.
[36:44]So it's flashlight.
[36:45]See Menzies.
[36:46]It's what was the other one?
[36:48]It was photos of feet.
[36:50]I'm the creeper.
[36:51]And now it's elbow guy would have worn nicer socks and I have no idea, and I think it has
[37:00]something to do with.
[37:01]Uh, something at, uh, at a fuck fest, if somebody would have worn nicer socks or something,
[37:08]and I'm trying to remember what it was, but I have no idea about holiday party, right?
[37:12]I gotta say elbow guy, the fuck fest.
[37:15]That only makes me think of one thing, macho man.
[37:18]No, no.
[37:19]It's yellow guy.
[37:20]It's you fucking somebody's elbow like this because you thought it was something else
[37:23]in the dark.
[37:24]And you're like, oh, you're kind of getting into that crevice.
[37:27]Yeah.
[37:28]You're kind of doing like, you know what they used to call the bagpipes where you do it.
[37:30]Somebody's armpit.
[37:31]They'd go like this with their arm.
[37:32]The worst is when they guys know what I'm talking about.
[37:33]They flex a little bit and you get a little more constriction that you were expecting,
[37:38]Rob.
[37:39]Yeah.
[37:40]They're really just the macho man.
[37:41]Yeah.
[37:42]They're released.
[37:43]Oh yeah.
[37:44]I like those socks.
[37:47]Those are nicer than my socks.
[37:51]The best socks for a fuck fest would be one that you get from like a trampoline place.
[37:55]Have you ever gone where you get the special socks that had the grip on the bottom?
[37:58]You could, you could, you could put those feet up on the wall.
[38:01]Those feet.
[38:02]Anywhere.
[38:03]You wouldn't like slip in a tub or anything, would you?
[38:05]No.
[38:06]And even if they wanted you to get real slippery for some reason, you know, on a tarp or whatever,
[38:09]uh, you're not moving.
[38:10]You're the king.
[38:11]You're the one eyed man in the land of the blind.
[38:13]So my hope is that we'll be, we'll be in Vegas next week and I'll be slightly inebriated
[38:19]typing these things up and then you guys will be able to help me.
[38:22]That's right.
[38:23]Better notes.
[38:24]Yeah.
[38:25]We're there.
[38:26]Taking better notes.
[38:27]Um, you know, this is a music podcast.
[38:28]Is this a music podcast, Rosie?
[38:29]I think it's supposed to be a music podcast.
[38:30]And I, I'm going to jump a little bit ahead only because I, I started listening to half
[38:36]this album and then just cut it off because I've been obsessed with this band that I didn't
[38:40]really know about.
[38:41]I mean, I knew about them, but didn't really know about them called LCD, LCD sound system,
[38:46]which is kind of this dance, rock, hippie, rock, uh, electronic rock group that came
[38:53]out and they've got this, there's this new movie and Rosie's probably heard of it called
[38:57]white noise.
[38:58]It's kind of really artsy fartsy.
[39:00]It's got a Adam driver in it.
[39:02]Right?
[39:03]I think it's on Netflix.
[39:04]Okay.
[39:05]It's like one of those movies that cinematography is off the charts.
[39:11]The story itself is just kind of stupid and dumb and wacky, I guess.
[39:15]And so like, it's really cool.
[39:16]But at the end they have this huge, long, like seven minute outro of all of the, um, you
[39:23]know, all these people are dancing in this, uh, like grocery store and it's very choreographed.
[39:28]So it's awesome scene.
[39:29]And I had no idea what the song.
[39:30]I thought it was from the eighties and all of a sudden listened to your favorite station,
[39:34]Rosie and the twin cities here, 89 three, the current, and this song comes on and it's
[39:38]from LCD sound systems.
[39:40]Okay.
[39:41]And I am like, what the hell is this band?
[39:43]All right.
[39:44]I, I swear to God is from 80.
[39:45]So Rob, I think I told you to tee it up, but they've got this song called new body rumba
[39:50]from the movie white noise.
[39:52]And it is like straight up.
[39:56]It's like, uh, synth pop.
[40:00]But it just goes unbelievably cool.
[40:03]And I'm like, Oh, this, this, you know, I've never heard of these guys from, oh, this song
[40:06]is from September of this year, you know?
[40:09]And I'm like, holy cow.
[40:10]So I'm on this deep dive into LCD sound system.
[40:13]That's my, you know, we talked about the songs that were playing over and over and over.
[40:17]This is my song for this week.
[40:19]So it's a good thing, man.
[40:20]They were, I've never listened to that.
[40:22]It really rocks right here.
[40:23]Like it really kicks in.
[40:24]If you, and it's just this for the next two minutes.
[40:28]And it's, oh man.
[40:29]So Matt.
[40:30]Do you listen to this song or to like all their music now?
[40:33]A lot, all of their music, but this song specifically, especially this last two minutes here, just
[40:38]goes in heavy, like into like a newer sound, but like I've told you, the synth pop from
[40:43]the eighties, I don't know.
[40:44]You've got a sound.
[40:45]You definitely have a sound, man.
[40:46]I got a sound, you know, and then all of a sudden this band comes along and it's like,
[40:49]oh, people are still making the stuff.
[40:50]So, so good stuff.
[40:54]That's always, that's always so fun.
[40:55]Isn't it?
[40:56]When you get it, you get hooked on an artist that is, that you really haven't heard before.
[41:00]Like, and it's just kind of like a newer artist and you feel for fleeting second as
[41:05]a 40 year old man, you feel almost hip, right?
[41:08]You feel almost cool.
[41:09]Even though you really, you're like a year behind everything.
[41:11]You're like, ah,
[41:12]no, I know I've heard of them before.
[41:14]Yeah.
[41:15]I will say.
[41:16]I think every time he talks music with us guys, maybe he's the guy, he's the guy with
[41:24]the, uh, the, the trampoline socks and the fuck fest.
[41:26]He's the genius.
[41:27]I've actually never listened to LCD times.
[41:30]He's the genius.
[41:31]Yeah.
[41:32]He's the genius.
[41:33]He's the genius.
[41:34]He's the genius.
[41:35]The genius.
[41:36]He's the genius.
[41:37]He's the genius.
[41:38]He's the genius.
[41:39]He's the genius.
[41:40]He's the genius.
[41:41]He's the genius.
[41:42]He's the genius.
[41:43]He's the genius.
[41:44]He's the genius.
[41:45]He's the genius.
[41:46]He's the genius.
[41:47]He's the genius.
[41:48]He's the genius.
[41:49]He's the genius.
[41:50]He's the genius.
[41:51]He's the genius.
[41:52]He's the genius.
[41:53]He's the genius.
[41:54]He's the genius.
[41:55]He's the genius.
[41:56]He's the genius.
[41:57]He's the genius.
[41:58]Yeah.
[41:59]Yeah.
[42:00]sound system because i it was too long so the second the second half goes crazy man it's all
[42:06]synth pop that's the weird part shit oh i missed it oh well rolling going rob how's it going with
[42:15]you okay now i actually have three things number one these i'm gonna have two quick things number
[42:19]one did anybody watch new year's music shows again is it just me no well i watched a little
[42:26]bit i did watch a little but i missed a bunch of good stuff i think like miley cyrus's was really
[42:30]great right yeah and they had belbiv devoe was going with bobby brown whatever new edition it
[42:35]was new edition no that's funny you texted us and i was like hey turn it on belbiv devoe's on and
[42:40]then we turn it on and they were like what the hell are you talking about this isn't belbiv devoe
[42:43]and i was like oh no it's new edition yeah i get it wasn't new edition the same as belbiv devoe
[42:47]minus bobby brown what about ralph trezvan oh i'm sorry sorry ralph i forgot about that
[42:53]that's actually the first time i've ever thought
[42:56]about ralph trezvan number two i want to remind you guys how i find my boxers online one way i
[43:02]have combated getting older okay is i am doing cool stuff now as you know last year my key to
[43:09]buying a speedo is i did go to a gay clothing store okay and that got me a nice speedo everybody
[43:14]complimented me in there and it's great i have found now the best way to buy boxers i believe
[43:19]you had a moon landing at that event right well that's true it was through a curtain though so it
[43:26]was pretty cool um but if you if you go on amazon and you search boxers best bulge this is the way
[43:34]that you can now buy boxers i'm going to show you guys my boxers real quick what do you think of the
[43:37]bulge in these boxers check us out are we looking on text or what's going on no not yet on video oh
[43:42]no we're actually looking oh wow oh those are not boxers those are pretty whatever they are what no
[43:47]they're not briefs that's like a lift you're getting your ball sacks getting a lift rob rob
[43:55]has got confusion over terms with his underwear i think this okay so how would you just aaron describe
[43:59]those underwear in detail and do it slowly please they were orange oh yeah they're quite snug and
[44:06]there does seem to be one of those pouches in the front to kind of keep the whole thing high and
[44:10]tight you know and everybody thinks it's your cock but it's your balls yeah it's a lift it's
[44:16]lifting everything up it is it's it's like a wonder it's a wonder pouch guys if you are not
[44:21]wearing these kind of boxers they make you feel sexy as hell
[44:25]those are 100 not boxers though they're not boxers they're they look like they're orange
[44:30]whitey tighties they look like yeah they're not whitey tighties they have legs they're very
[44:35]there's no legs on those things rob's rob's too big for those steps what did you fold the legs
[44:43]up underneath i think all right i mean i see those don't you get chafing do you get some thigh rub
[44:51]now that actually goes together with why they were folded
[44:55]up i think my body just does that it kind of eats whatever i'm wearing kind of up into my
[44:58]crotch area that's just a natural thing that happens but i thought of that when i skittered
[45:02]to the bathroom i was like i wonder if they're wondering what these boxers are about but
[45:05]i sent you guys a text you listen back to the recording we were not i want you i want you to
[45:11]look at the text i was over the holidays i saw my family i was looking at instagram as something my
[45:17]dad was looking with me and i said oh let me just go search instagram real quick and i went to one
[45:24]in the history of life and that is the instagram search page now what the instagram search page
[45:30]does for those of you that don't know is it just shows there's a tiny tiny search bar at the top
[45:35]it's like two percent of the page it's almost non-existent but what it does show you is people
[45:40]on instagram or photos that it thinks you would like okay so according to instagram's algorithm
[45:49]and it's best okay yeah aaron do you want to describe just just pick any picture
[45:54]that i sent you and i will be posting this in the instagram of my search page just pick one picture
[45:59]and tell me which one you're looking at and tell me describe to the audience what it is what what
[46:04]did my dad see on my instagram search page hence thinking that this is what i'm way way way into
[46:09]sounds like um looks like ronnie coleman on the joe rogan show talking about his body fat percentage
[46:14]that's the one you pick out you gotta be fucking kidding me do you know what a podcast is do you
[46:20]know what we're trying to do i think you're doing the opposite i was messing with you a little bit
[46:24]it does look it appears to be uh ladies who are jacked um super are bodybuilders of some
[46:32]maybe one or two ladies who some cartoons some pictures yeah oh there's no cartoons on there
[46:39]russell no those are all people there's at least three cartoons i think oh there's not there's not
[46:45]those are real photos zoom in my dude so these are amazon women huge roided up women with six
[46:53]packs wearing bikinis and almost six-packed women with six-packed women and almost six-packed women
[46:54]every photo is like from the crotch up it's the dirtiest looking photo and this is what came up
[46:59]when i showed my dad my instagram of like what i said so my dad now thinks that my like fetish
[47:06]is bodybuilding women is he wrong and you also have paulie from the jersey shore on there it
[47:11]looks like we're in a shirt that says full send well yeah i mean that's that's kind of the vibe
[47:16]i'm giving off for sure i this instagram page disturbed me i thought about it for days i i
[47:24]because on one hand what if my dad turned to me and was like i'm proud of you son
[47:28]listen we are talking about my life by mary j blige music this album okay this is kind of i mean this
[47:40]is really in my mind the quintessential 90s hip-hop soul album when you really think about
[47:46]like this is and i've i have how familiar were you guys with this album just real quick
[47:50]i don't think i've heard i don't think i had heard any of the songs before listening to it
[47:54]i know several of the songs but definitely never listened to the album all the way through but yeah
[47:59]it's it's it's genre defining i mean it's bad boy doing what bad boy does yeah so mary j blige is an
[48:04]interesting story she actually recorded a song in a recording booth in a mall and her mother's
[48:11]boyfriend took that tape and gave it to somebody at uptown who sent it to uh andre harrell who is
[48:16]that right here and andre harrell yeah that's how you say it yeah and so we've talked about
[48:20]andre harrell before when we talked about uh biggie i think and basically she got brought
[48:24]in to work immediately with puff daddy on an album called what's the 411 because her past
[48:29]job was that she was actually a 411 operator which i think would be a great job right people
[48:34]would call and be like hey what time is this movie show you look it up you'd be like 8 20
[48:37]you know and everybody'd be oh thank you i'd rather be a 511 or 611 operator i don't remember
[48:43]what it was but it's the one that tells you what roads are closed in southern minnesota
[48:46]not that not that it was the first time i've ever looked at road closures on
[48:54]that website but so what's what's the 411 was released on 1992 her first album it peaked all
[49:01]the way up at number six and it went triple platinum so she was a superstar right out of
[49:05]the bat she goes into studio 93 to start recruiting my life and now all of a sudden she is battling
[49:11]alcohol addiction she's battling drug addiction she is battling depression she's an abusive
[49:16]relationship with some shithead named uh kci from jodeci and now this is the first album where she
[49:22]writes lyrics and she's writing lyrics about all these things that are happening in her life and
[49:26]when you listen to this album you're like oh this is kind of a fun funky album and then when you
[49:30]start reading the lyrics you're like oh this is a super depressing super funky album uh and in 1996
[49:36]this was nominated for the best r&b album at the 38th grammy awards which of course uh uh that award
[49:46]was won by tlc for crazy sexy cool but it also had d'angelo brown sugar it was going against prince
[49:52]and then this is weird barry white the icon is love like can you imagine barry white being there
[49:58]he's like i i'm gonna get my ass kicked by these albums nobody's ever heard of this album i think
[50:02]isn't he sampled on this record he is yeah absolutely yes and you know what the record
[50:07]of the year was that year i've been kissed oh rose on the wind i knew that oh man wouldn't
[50:17]it feel kind of shitty to lose a grammy to someone who sampled one of your
[50:22]songs
[50:23]and now the best podcast of the ward of the year award is paul's boutique remix
[50:32]we thought we had to go to it well this was i mean yeah this i mean we talked a little bit
[50:40]before the show this album's full of samples because that was puffy's whole thing he was
[50:43]just like oh well if the song was good once it's probably good to just redo it again and
[50:48]it's going to work for people who know the songs for nostalgia purposes and it's going to work for
[50:52]people who've never heard it because it's already a good song he's and he's not wrong so this album
[50:56]gets uh it it again this her second album certified triple platinum like a giant genre
[51:02]defining album like aaron said before aaron real quick before we start can you explain how this
[51:06]album uses samples differently than like the beastie boys that we just listened to
[51:09]i think it comes a lot closer to interpolation or even getting in some of these cases getting
[51:16]closer to just straight up covering a song it's not really burying the samples or or trying to
[51:22]make us guess five or six notes or repeated or something like that or right like the hook or
[51:28]something yeah exactly i mean it's really just like using big swathes of tunes exactly matt and
[51:33]and laying them down so like the point is to recognize the song and to say oh i think i
[51:38]recognize that and then it's updated intro i'm gonna go through those spoken intro ones so fast
[51:46]they are right it's not it's not a bad boy record if you don't have puffy on the voicemail
[51:51]what are the other
[51:52]big bad boy records i don't know enough about bad boy or or what are the other big killers out there
[52:00]both biggie albums ready to die and life after death matt's right mace uh 112 uh i mean the locks
[52:09]then maybe state property but yeah i mean biggie would be the big one and then um mace his harlem
[52:15]world was like massive right looks like machine gun kelly is currently uh an act french montana
[52:22]he's pretty good uh it's no longer little bow wow janelle monet probably a song i've heard more
[52:30]than any other song in my life and not by choice not once not once have i chosen to listen to this
[52:34]song and that is i'll be missing you yes by of course mary j blige and faith evans yeah is that
[52:40]faith evans that's faith uh faith evans uh biggie's ex or uh wife yeah you know yeah so
[52:47]faith evans and p diddy and it's just i heard this song i bet one conservatively one billion times
[52:52]growing i was a much bigger fan of the version that was like the dinosaur version uh what was
[52:57]the was it on the god i like the godzilla version better mary jane all night long according to
[53:07]wikipedia this was the third single but the wikipedia entry also said the video has them
[53:12]doing some real crazy dancing so i'm starting to get suspicious as we move down the list how
[53:16]accurate these sources are going to be yeah this is the one that's just like almost a straight cover
[53:21]of the
[53:22]the mary jane girls song i was thinking of you rob i heard the harp on some of these samples here
[53:29]that was didn't your aunt play a harp or something when you were a kid oh no i've got a cousin now
[53:34]who plays the harp oh they've got a harp in their house and if i went over i could ask them just to
[53:37]play the harp for me and they would i wonder if deborah beck is listening to this one erin that
[53:43]is a pull and a half who is okay that was good i did it better on the harp player
[53:50]from like when it comes to harp
[53:52]on the record who does it better yeah we might need to find that let's go back in time to when
[53:57]we talked about the harp we'll drop it in i'll find it that would be tough though wouldn't it
[54:05]if you were going back in time to talk to a person that was playing the harp you'd be like
[54:08]okay let's go back let's remember that time i talked to my aunt who played the harp and that's
[54:12]like that's right when does hey hey hey rosie improv with me hey hey aunt rosie how are you
[54:20]doing are you still playing the harp yeah i'm still playing the harp i'm still playing the harp
[54:22]yeah i've been playing the harp the whole time oh are you playing it right now yeah i'm playing
[54:26]the harp i'm really okay that sounds way better going further going further back but i just where
[54:31]am i now i'm just trying to practice my arpeggios i don't understand oh my god i'm i'm i'm in an
[54:36]ancient land surrounded by troglodytes ancient humans ancient humans and they're coming at me
[54:42]they have bones ancient weapons bones they seem to have some sort of raw culture that seems to
[54:47]be undeveloped but here somebody brings out a a tiny stringed instrument and hey thog uh
[54:52]what are you what are you playing over there thog what is that oh it's a it's a harp have you ever
[54:56]heard this before it's a it's a beautiful harp it's so interesting oh my god now i go farther
[55:00]back in time it's me space nothing okay it's the sixth day god created the harp hey rob check out
[55:07]this note it's a harp oh my god where am i going now this is crazy i'm not editing any of that
[55:14]that was a great bit haven't you noticed i don't edit out boring stuff anymore i only edit out
[55:22]inappropriate terms in association with parody songs that are inappropriate to be fair when i
[55:29]had to beep out a dirty dirty word that aaron said last time he was saying good job rob for
[55:32]not saying this he's congratulating me so you bring me just like my friend when i didn't want
[55:40]any more mounds you bring me joy i thought this song was absolutely fantastic the beat was banging
[55:50]i really enjoyed this was one of my favorites on the album
[55:52]i also i gotta give some i gotta give some credit where it's due my we're listening to this in the
[55:57]house and my lady was like i think she stole prince's flow from get off for this one from get
[56:03]off yes and obviously she's not gonna credit nobody's gonna credit prince because he wouldn't
[56:11]clear the sample but yes it sounds the same right it's there right that is a pull i don't
[56:22]know
[56:22]it's also a great song i'm not i'm not i'm not a big fan that your wife always goes after female
[56:31]artists those and accuses them of stealing male artists yeah uh guys i think we need to do a video
[56:38]breakdown of the video get off i'm seeing a lot of interesting things here i'm gonna need to order
[56:44]more dental dams if we're doing that right there's a lot of women on tarps in this video like the
[56:48]time is a flat circle i swear to god and wait a minute
[56:52]what is that that prince is playing it's
[56:53]hey prince you're you're now you're back in minneapolis high school you're playing basketball
[57:02]oh hey it's a pep band oh what's that one guy playing in the pep band oh no
[57:06]i'm not editing that out that's a great bit the accidental confused time traveler
[57:15]the guy
[57:18]it's time traveling but secretly
[57:22]loves it i just can't stop time traveling okay wait a minute just one second i'm sorry guys
[57:27]okay i had to write that down uh marvin interlude oh god wait is there a harp in there too
[57:40]i was reading one of the big producers on this was someone called bob bob brockman and their
[57:46]name was either i couldn't decide if their name was the coolest nickname ever or the worst it's
[57:50]either basie
[57:52]bob brockman which would be an amazing name or bassy bob brockman like as if he's a bass fisherman
[57:58]and i couldn't tell so i think it's bassy because i saw him one time i walked into a room and he
[58:04]looked right at me real quick as soon as i moved and he goes take me to the river
[58:08]i walked into the room and he was noodling something in the corner
[58:14]this is one of the few podcasts where you will get a big mouth billy bass reference
[58:22]i'm the only woman
[58:24]now can i just admit some of you guys the problem i had with this album i think it's a great album
[58:31]i love listening to it i listened to it a ton this week at work it helped me get through a really
[58:35]stressful week almost all these songs sound the same to me like i could put this on random i could
[58:41]put it in the straight play i don't think i'd know the difference i love the sound but i was
[58:46]i took about a four hour drive it was not to my shotgun partner's home it was a different place
[58:51]this weekend but i was like i'm gonna do it again i'm gonna do it again i'm gonna do it again i'm gonna
[58:52]driving back and i was like perfect opportunity put this on be over in an hour no problem i had
[58:58]to stop the album three or four times and go to someone else because it was just doggedly beating
[59:04]me down with the same thing for way too long album i know matt had maybe mentioned this in
[59:08]the text way too long for me it is i i'm telling you an hour-long album should be illegal it should
[59:14]she should be in jail sorry not sorry uh marvin interlude
[59:22]we just did that one we did do that one wait a minute what's going on here
[59:26]all right uh my light no oh it's keeping so here's the other thing with this album and i don't know if
[59:34]this is on purpose or not i just realized that that the sample that she's using that they're
[59:39]using and i'm the only woman is also in keep your head up by tupac and just biggie and pock are just
[59:44]they they tower over this album for me they're the piano from who from who shot you is in a couple of
[59:51]tunes dear my god i love this album i love this album i love this album i love this album i love
[59:52]it mama or was it keep your head up
[59:54]that's what i'm thinking so it's like yeah yeah and uh and then the piano loop from who shot is
[60:06]in here and so it's just it's hard to listen because it just these guys were just like
[60:10]towering over the the sound at the time well i can tell you what what people are not sampling
[60:15]and that's these interludes here's another one this one is actually by an arizona quarterback
[60:19]you might have heard of it hey murray interlude very
[60:22]selfish
[60:22]actually i know none of us read anything on this album this is the one thing i read
[60:27]this is who shot yeah this is not keith murray um kind of redid a a biggie verse on this and
[60:33]the reason they had him redo the verse was the biggie verse had explicit lyrics and if they
[60:38]used that in the album they would have to put the explicit lyric tag on there and they didn't want
[60:42]to do that so they had keith murray redo the verse i thought that was pretty interesting rob i don't
[60:47]know if that was the only thing you read so if it was i apologize but no i read that actually he
[60:52]had to redo a verse because wait a minute you know russell one interesting thing about this album
[60:58]is that i actually read the something reverse verse i don't know i got it lost keith murray
[61:04]was kind of like your favorite rapper's favorite rapper for a while i know he had an album called
[61:07]the most beautifulest thing in this world but i don't actually know his music that well i just
[61:11]like that album title most beautifulest thing in the world that's so good i love it he's kind of
[61:15]like carmelo anthony of nba players right aaron everyone loves carmelo anthony but everyone's
[61:20]like he's really not that good but all the players are like he's really not that good but all the
[61:22]players are like he's really not that good but all the players are like he's really not that good but all the
[61:22]players love the players love him yeah that's a good good analogy i got another nba analogy for
[61:26]this album i'm gonna wait to bust it out my life in the sunshine roy airs
[61:32]i read this song by this is the joyers was sampled 183 times i was like that's pretty
[61:40]impressive right right wow i mean this is that's why they call them airs jordan oh another callback
[61:47]what i guess to what here's what is that
[61:52]making an airs jordan joke with the xylophone on the dead guy and the whole thing
[61:56]jesus christ no i don't remember what we were talking about two minutes ago deborah beck harp
[62:01]thing from earlier i don't know what he's been doing recently but i guess i've been listening
[62:04]to beck did it better wait a minute let's let's see what let's see what he's talking about
[62:08]so aaron the thing with this airs guy is something with a xylophone what do you think
[62:14]we're improv aaron you have to oh well the thing is you know it's like he's wearing a t-shirt
[62:20]where he's playing xylophone and he's wearing a t-shirt and he's wearing a t-shirt and he's wearing
[62:22]xylophone on a dead guy's ribs i gotta get out of here give me that harp
[62:26]matt what's your impression of like the bad boy i know you're more of an outcast guy do you like
[62:32]the bad boy hip-hop or you like the r&b or what's your impression so far same thing as rob is it's
[62:39]it's all the same and i don't know if it's just me because i think we had the same thing with
[62:43]erica badu you know or by the end of the album the three or four great songs but everything
[62:48]else was essentially the same song and i don't
[62:52]trying to figure out if it's me or it's the genre or what it is but um yeah it's just i like i said
[62:59]i turned it off halfway through because i just couldn't listen to it anymore i had to listen to
[63:03]something else it was the same thing over and over i think this is a great party song though
[63:08]right you're having a dinner party you're having people over put this thing on cut out all the
[63:11]interludes i think it would be awesome a great college vibe album i yeah but the best would be
[63:17]watching rob like jump up like the interlude comes on and he jumps up from the dinner table to go like
[63:22]to track that track to track it you gotta believe no i when i was younger actually i used to always
[63:32]play like weird al over the whole house stereo and i was always like why are my parents so annoyed
[63:38]with me all the time and now i realize like we were jumping from like 60s rock to weird al to
[63:43]they might be giants on a six disc changer so it was just randomly playing songs casey and jojo in
[63:49]the background it is right yeah
[63:52]what the fuck i was telling the story to me but i think she i do think she really turns it out on
[63:57]this one vocally but there's a lot of filler on this album she does have a pretty amazing voice
[64:01]there and what what did you and your wife talk about her vocal skills at all what what's her
[64:04]singing ability or what was your guys impression my impression is this and this is my nba analogy
[64:09]for this album i think for modern r&b i think that whitney and mariah are the
[64:18]steph curry and reggie miller of modern r&b singers
[64:22]did not see reggie miller coming there as the second name for me mary j blige slots in at the
[64:27]ray allen slot where she's still great but i don't think she's god tier up there with whitney and
[64:33]mariah which i'm gonna give away my my album rating but but i think she's great and i think
[64:37]she's got a lot of soul in her voice but i don't think she's up there with with whitney mariah
[64:41]what was his was he the one was ray allen the one with the tweet
[64:46]yeah i think he did make some uh yeah is that the statements on twitter that
[64:52]didn't is that the switch tweet yeah his ray allen tweet i'm getting there when you masturbate
[65:00]think about my tongue on your clit switching back and forth with my dick and my tongue
[65:03]what a classic ray allen tweet so that is who aaron is comparing this to that's what ray allen
[65:09]tweeted out obviously it was supposed to be like a dm to somebody and he pushed tweet it's so funny
[65:15]what guys think is sexy when they say it and then when you read it you're like wait you're gonna
[65:19]switch back and forth like come on really
[65:22]i mean what are you in a hotel room switch give me a break that that movie with jesus
[65:28]shuttlesworth he got game he had game he did have some game that's true that yeah that's true he had
[65:33]some game in that movie i never want to live he definitely ran a three-man weave in one of the
[65:39]scenes i remember when i was in middle school basketball we were running a three-man weave
[65:48]everyone else on the team knew how to run a three-man weave i had no idea what i was doing
[65:52]it's tough to run a three-man weave when you don't know what you're doing
[65:55]i guess they had to give the two sex songs in a row right like in case you're taking your time
[66:00]with it do you think aaron can hear me and aaron hear what i'm saying
[66:03]i'm just trying to think maybe i'm not that funny
[66:08]wait aaron am i on mute
[66:11]you say yes aaron that's the joke there okay uh i never wanna where are we guys sorry
[66:18]i think i'm going down oh yeah
[66:22]uh i'm going down speaking of ray allen
[66:24]this might be my favorite track so this is a this is another one of those just covers right
[66:30]this is a rose royce song when all the music and instruments kick in it's amazing well the
[66:38]original is amazing i mean this is a perfect song for the cover this part right here how do you not
[66:43]love this right yes rob you got me on that one i did not know it was rose rose rose royce
[66:49]my only problem with this is that it's literally
[66:52]i because i was going to pull the rose royce song as a sample something rob said
[66:56]i know i'm not listening to him aaron he doesn't listen back
[67:00]this is the rose royce version since you've been this is my problem it's literally the same song
[67:08]it's just the same yes can you fast forward when the music all the instruments kick in yeah
[67:12]when is it
[67:13]oh yeah it's man you hear this and now that mary j blige's version is kind of bullshit is it
[67:22]isn't it right this song's kind of watered down it's i don't know i mean that that rose royce that's
[67:27]what i mean is i was gonna pull a sample and be like oh this it's just not different at all it's
[67:31]great song but it's my life my life my interlude no all right thank you be with you
[67:41]i don't know if we'll hear it on this sound clip but this is where
[67:48]there's that there's there's that g funk snake right here we talked about
[67:52]many years ago on the dr dre and i think it was the chronic where that g funk sound with the snake
[67:58]kind of twisting around i love that if this was a 40 minute album it would be perfect i think i
[68:04]think it would be a perfect album of this genre mary's joint hey i got a question yes did mary j
[68:12]blige perform with dr dre at the super bowl yes yep so so typically you don't see like the crossover
[68:20]like if she was with was
[68:22]she ever part of puff daddy's label or how does that work like you don't see many hip-hop artists
[68:28]that are part of kind of both those michaels labels right that's true yeah i don't know who
[68:33]she was recording for when she did but he did the um what the hell is that song oh yeah what is that
[68:44]i think dre did that beat but i don't know who what label she was on when that happened that's
[68:52]all uh halftime was just literally like the mount rushmore of rappers and r&b you know kind of that's
[69:00]why they had uh you know dr dre and snoop and then they had um m&m you know they had to throw a feet
[69:06]those are all like dr dre produced west coast right they all were right but i mean m&m's from
[69:11]detroit i mean you know they were all in the dre family tree and so mary kind of joined the dre
[69:18]family tree later aaron aaron aaron i love you i'm sorry
[69:22]i love you i'm good man no no that was the next song i wasn't talking to you
[69:26]he was cutting you off and then saying the song
[69:30]this is isaac hayes ike's mood sample okay
[69:36]album sounds good in headphones man sounds really good well yeah he knew they were good songs
[69:45]oh these are good songs just gonna play it's full it's lush i mean what so how is this how is this
[69:52]like what makes this a ditty album well i think ripping off songs wholesale i mean i think like
[69:58]uh you know a lot of people took took issue with his use of music in this way
[70:04]brazen about using material from others but nobody had ever done a song before called i'll be missing
[70:12]you you know what i mean so something to think about until they did it on the godzilla movie
[70:20]right well no i was making a song called i'll be missing you you know what i mean
[70:22]making a joke because it's a sting song called i'll be watching you but no
[70:25]so technically i was right uh no one else
[70:31]it's interesting you guys hear that there is no competition there is no competition
[70:38]i was like i know what that is do you guys know what that's from is that any camosi
[70:41]it's not is that any camosi is a statement i have never said in my entire life
[70:48]you know what i'll give you a warning we're about to say is that any
[70:51]camosi again in your few minutes here all right i actually was looking and that's actually a sample
[70:57]from slick rick and dougie fresh's song lotty dotty right from 1985 so maybe rob can you pull
[71:05]up that um the original version of that when it comes to me and my friend doug fresh you know
[71:09]there is no competition because we are the best but that's impressed which we so that's there
[71:15]there is no competition that we are that's nice and i started looking at this and it turns out
[71:20]this lotty dotty by
[71:21]slick rick and dougie fresh is one of the most sampled songs ever it has been sampled
[71:27]1084 times at least i thought that was insane so i thought we could do a list and we're not
[71:34]going to talk about sampling of the music because if you go back and listen to that
[71:37]it's the lyrics that are amazing on that song and the lyrics are so good
[71:41]so i thought we could do a list of the greatest lyric samples ever
[71:45]from lotty dotty by slick rick and dougie fresh this is great this is such a good
[71:51]list i'm already excited for this comes to mind right away right we'll get after that one right
[71:57]off the bat i think i'm gonna say i've said it before and i'll say it again i love how slick
[72:02]rick sounds i cannot get enough of i can hear slick rick if slick rick read an audiobook i would
[72:07]listen to every one he's another favorite rapper favorite rapper ghost love slick rick let's get
[72:12]into it so before we get into the best songs i had to give you guys some of the amazing
[72:16]lines from this song that were sampled but couldn't make the list but they're still amazing we have to
[72:21]go through some of these lines right i'm here for it yeah let's hear it so the first one is okay
[72:25]party people in the house party people in the house great line sampled by crisscross in the
[72:30]song party oh nice here's another one just some just some men that's on the mic and when we rock
[72:37]up on the mic we rock the mic right sample by ludacris robbie williams on some song amazing
[72:44]lyric right yep just to see just to see you smile and enjoy yourself because it's cool outside when
[72:51]you cause a cozy condition that we create because that's our mission amazing line sampled by ll cool
[72:58]j stand by your man jeez and uh tim mcgraw just to see you smile yes i do anything so tim mcgraw
[73:08]sampling slick rick you know i i edit out every time matt has mentioned tim mcgraw on this podcast
[73:13]it's almost every episode another one because this type of shit happens every day another fantastic
[73:21]wow the junior mafia um on players anthem de la soul uses that one mc ren air and that's one of
[73:27]your favorite rappers right on the song this type of shit he samples that through the whole thing m
[73:32]and m slick rick even samples himself on that that's so badass when you say yourself right
[73:37]a few others i'll try to get i'll tell you what russell i cannot i just can't all i want to do
[73:43]is make love to you another couple that were i thought really interesting i woke up around 10
[73:51]in the morning like that's not always sampled but that's a huge influence on hip-hop all these songs
[73:56]always start off with like um starting in the morning like six in the morning ice cube it was
[74:01]a good day tupac changes all that stuff comes from this song by slick rick right yes yes i said mirror
[74:08]mirror on the wall who's the top choice of them all the mirror said you are you conceited bastard
[74:12]another great line like these like rob you threw on your new pair of gucci underwear today like
[74:19]this is fantastic right
[74:20]yeah i put and i did put on some baby powder too so this all right so i could keep going forever
[74:25]these lines this is i think this that song has the greatest lyrics in the history of music if you go
[74:30]back and look at it it's all over but so the first song is that's a great day we're just we're just
[74:34]going to start with lotty dotty we like to party we're going to play the original version from
[74:38]lotty dotty back in 85 you know what your people is lotty dotty we like to party we don't we got
[74:44]fresh on the beatbox nobody we're just some men that's on the mic rock up on the mic we rock
[74:50]this is so good isn't it yes slick rick always sounds like he's smiling doesn't he when he's
[75:00]rapping he's kind of like kind of sneaky so matt actually mentioned the sample we're going to pull
[75:07]on this one is actually snoop dog who essentially twisted the whole song and almost covered the
[75:12]whole song but it's from doggy style 93 it's lotty dotty check this out he has the same type of tone
[75:18]and tempo we like to party
[75:20]two guys who have very distinct voices that are so different than other rap guys
[75:37]i don't even want to tell you how much time i spent looking for a stewart scott version of
[75:43]lotty dotty he likes to party and it is not on the internet no scrubbed it from the internet
[75:48]you can't that's whack i don't
[75:50]tell you guys how many hours i spent in russell's dorm room listening to that song on death row's
[75:54]greatest hits all right next song on the list we have to go you guys will remember this it's
[76:00]the phrase hit it we'll go to the old version first check this out so listen close some so
[76:05]you all don't miss as we go a little something like this hit it there's that hit it you guys
[76:12]you guys will know that sound right yes so this has been covered by nwa the beastie boys dj
[76:20]jazzy jeff eminem those are just some of them but the one we're going to start with
[76:24]we're going to we'll jump to the high stepper aaron wanted to hear i need camozzi we'll hear i need
[76:28]camozzi yes isn't that a badass oh that's so good this is i mean this is a top 10 song of our youth
[76:38]this thing is it because he's the lyrical gangster committing a metaphorical murderer
[76:44]excuse me mr officer i believe you're correct
[76:50]what is he what are they saying there and if you tell me the truth i might just die because i've
[76:57]always wanted to know the lyrical gangster i'm the lyrical gangster oh no no i get no i know that
[77:03]part it's here comes the hot stepper where they go word murder murder i always thought they were
[77:14]saying word to rub i mean that would be cool too that'd be all right thank you aaron that is cool
[77:19]thank you that's very cool that hit it is so good though it's sampled on so many songs another one
[77:24]we had to play two of them the other one is from rob bass and dj easy rock it takes two
[77:29]i'm gonna rock right now and i love how it used like the the low zombie voice or whatever like
[77:42]the low alien voice like rob claims i sound like in the last song yeah i thought i'm not gonna give
[77:49]too many facts of these the one thing i thought was interesting about this is 1989 spin magazine
[77:54]ranked it takes two as the second greatest single of all time i saw that it was like they should have
[78:00]their magazine privileges revoked after that right this one we had to touch on was a great
[78:06]line this is the original version is tick tock you don't stop a great line to the heart
[78:10]tick tock you don't stop to the tick i did not know this was from slick right it's at the very end of the
[78:19]song you have to look for it it's at the very end do you guys know the famous song that that
[78:24]what is that calling me bad i want to sex you up yes
[78:28]you don't stop stop to the heart tick tock you don't stop and they kind of put it down there
[78:37]into the host becomes part of the percussion kind of a thing this is right remember when we got into
[78:41]that new jack swing this was written and produced by i believe we talked about elliot straight who
[78:45]was known as dr freeze was the guy who wrote poison for
[78:49]this is a great song still great this song always let me stop it here so i can edit this out but
[78:56]this song always makes me think about having sex standing up
[78:59]really an impossible dream never gonna happen but it makes me think about it
[79:04]do you think jenny's still up you think i could text her that too
[79:12]i was gonna say jenny is simply not strong enough she can't pick me up so i don't know
[79:19]swinging me around like a windmill she'd have to be like holding you by the armpits right
[79:32]yeah oh i'm don quixote would look at me and be like i'm charging that thing
[79:36]i give you all my love today ricky ricky ricky can't you see oh there we go
[79:43]what is this gonna sound like man you got this one biggie biggie biggie
[79:49]can't you see you got it man hit that one rob
[79:51]i never knew all this stuff came from the same song did you guys know that i had no idea no i
[79:59]didn't know wow most of the n y lgbt and y and aaron i believe i believe that hypnotize also
[80:07]sampled a herb albert song right really uh it samples a herb albert song called rise
[80:12]and the reason that sample came was biggie when he was a kid list in the 70s loved that song by
[80:19]herb albert and that's why they used it for hypnotize oh my god that's fantastic and that
[80:24]actually that that's a great point because the one thing like i've maybe been harsh on puffy's
[80:29]tactics with this album but he definitely was a kid listening to the radio in the 70s like he loves
[80:35]the music and he's got an ear for it and i think he also was playing you know he was
[80:39]playing the game of well this was on the music that the radio stations i listened to but
[80:45]crossover white audiences aren't going to recognize this music but they're going to know it's good
[80:48]so they're going to buy it last song and the first single off this album this was the first one be
[80:57]happy it's good enough where i give it a b plus happy you guys don't come on we're just having
[81:03]fun here this might be a curtis mayfield sample too right i wouldn't have picked it out but you're
[81:10]probably right i believe it's you're so good to me is the sample oh i don't know that song
[81:18]i do there's a lot of writing about you know if you read about this album much you know a lot of
[81:25]people really took a lot from it in terms of the the strength of her story rob you told about
[81:31]getting through adversity and i think a lot of people take a lot of inspiration from from this
[81:35]album and so closing with that one i think spoke to a lot of folks all right let's get into the
[81:41]rating system i normally like to do it on a joke or something like that but i wasn't telling a joke
[81:48]to a joke even i could not do that back did it better rating system oh yeah
[81:55]now listen okay you have to think about this album just like you would the song
[82:03]lotty dotty we love to party now if you think this album is just fine and guess what it doesn't
[82:10]bother nobody okay does this does this belong at 126 that would be a rolling well toned okay
[82:18]is this song is this album too high on the list it's too good it's not that good you know what
[82:24]it thinks it's good and it's not and that's why it's a real conceited bastard this is a rolling
[82:29]groan it should not be this high oh i had the gong red grown i almost hit gong and said that'd be
[82:35]crazy i'd start the show again or here comes an edit point right here or is this song is this
[82:43]album better than we think it should have been higher up on the list which of course we know is
[82:47]a lower number than we think it should have been higher up on the list which of course we know is a
[82:47]lower number than we think it should have been higher up on the list which of course we know is a
[82:47]lower number than we think it should have been higher up on the list which of course we know is a lower number
[82:48]that would be like hitting the mic right okay and that would be a rolling bone it should have been
[82:55]higher on the list a lower number it got boned what do you think matt rolling well toned rolling
[83:00]bone or rolling groan from 1994 my life by mary j blige what do you think um i is you know like
[83:11]i've said it's just not for me i think it's rolling groan should be lower on the list um
[83:18]i think you could clearly hear her talent and i think if you read her backstory she's
[83:23]100 an inspiration to everybody that came after her and you know just generally uh she's overcome
[83:31]a lot in her life which is a great story um but this album just doesn't do it for me i'm gonna say
[83:37]rolling uh groan should be lower on the list russell what do you think rolling well toned
[83:42]rolling bone or rolling groan mary j blige i thought it was beautiful music the samples that
[83:47]you're using are absolutely fantastic you drop her voice in over these samples and i think it's
[83:53]a great combination i love listening to it i will say when i listened to it the first time i had to
[83:58]stop numerous times and go listen to something else it was too repetitive for me if you take a
[84:03]great movie but the movie's 40 minutes too long or something it's hard to get past that and for me
[84:08]it felt repetitive it was hard for me to get through the whole album so
[84:12]if one of these songs popped up on my playlist i would love it and enjoy it i don't want to listen
[84:17]an hour and 10 minutes minutes of it in a row so for me it's a slight rolling groan a little too
[84:22]high on the list it's like when you when you find a porno online and you find the full like 40 minute
[84:27]version you're like yeah right fast forward to about 12 minutes into this thing is it 12 minutes
[84:35]for everyone like this yeah it's it's like a song 30 seconds in is the best part of the song 12
[84:39]minutes in is when they're just about to close a real estate deal but the one woman is realizing
[84:42]the loan doesn't go through and she's like well i need to buy this out what's gonna possibly do to
[84:45]make this work
[84:46]you're on
[84:47]why do you have so many dental dams on the ground what rob do you ever only get like 13 minutes in
[84:52]then and then wonder what was in the rest of like the 32 minutes or not no again i do that thing
[84:57]where it takes me a long time to jack off everybody loves that very fun why is there a sweat stain on
[85:03]the couch this doesn't make any sense you know the bench press is right next to it that's what
[85:07]happened in the tub tub aaron what do you think rolling well-toned rolling bone or rolling
[85:12]groan yeah i think russell makes some really good points the formula works when it works the the
[85:17]the best songs on here are great um i think there's some filler on here probably for a reason
[85:21]i think it might have been a time where they were trying to fill out enough music to sell a whole cd
[85:26]but they just needed the hits i'm confused why we've got mary j before we hear from whitney or
[85:33]mariah i don't think that's quite right and as i mentioned earlier we haven't heard duke yet so
[85:38]it's got to be a rolling groan for me oh no it's your duty to rank this album
[85:44]i would
[85:47]rank this album number two honestly guys unfortunately you are all incorrect
[85:53]shit okay this album is a rolling 90s sound right like if you want to think about 1994
[86:01]what music sounded like this was well i was going to do rolling too long but i think i
[86:06]already might have already done that for an album so i didn't want to copy myself
[86:09]i didn't want to sample myself for this album uh let me let me just check real quick
[86:17]well no it takes it takes rob way too long to sample himself anyway this this sweaty this guys
[86:24]now i gotta start the bit over again thanks for out here and you're totally distracting me
[86:27]going back again hey guys this is episode four of the podcast oh my gosh this podcast so fun
[86:32]we're never gonna be sick of it okay i'm gonna give this album a rolling too long
[86:36]this will probably not be the best album we hear for the next 10 years
[86:40]hey what's this heart button do oh no going back in time even more russell we're fishing
[86:46]here's the deal listen okay this is it when you want to hear that 90s that when i turn this on
[86:53]it was that quintessential like 90s soul hip-hop song this is a this is a great album if you want
[86:59]to go be transported back to that time in your life and it's and it's not quite it's not quite
[87:04]dookie but it's i actually do you would be a stronger reminder of that time in my life to
[87:08]be honest with you listen i fuck this up what can i do next up now i just want to tell you guys this
[87:14]this is maybe the greatest ending joke i've ever written
[87:16]are you ready for this
[87:18]next up
[87:22]do you want to hear the most ironic cover ever of hey good looking
[87:28]yeah it's ray charles with modern sounds of country western
[87:33]but after that is queen so we'll just see in two weeks don't worry about it
[87:37]i don't know how to stop the one
[87:41]i mean really he's
[87:46]saying hey good luck
[87:47]back did it better guys if if aaron's ranking was a dookie and it was my duty to raise rate
[88:02]the album and rob gave it a number two do you think that matt's bidet could clean up this mess
[88:07]we left for our listeners i don't know if we get it not a strong enough stream
[88:11]you have to
[88:16]at least the beast on that one
[88:17]oh jesus christ
[88:22]we're back in time again well now we got to start the podcast
[88:26]oh there it is
[88:30]wow that's a nice bulge see that's what i'm telling you guys i think they're great underwear
