[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums decided by rolling

[00:07]stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the order

[00:11]and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research

[00:15]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it better

[00:21]we are all the way up to album 136 and from 1971 we did it it's aaron when he's been hyping it up

[00:30]for a long time nobody made it before we got here it's happening it's really happening by

[00:34]funkadelic all right let's get right into this uh yeah so now if you've ever listened to mega

[00:43]brain you're gonna hear that these songs were kind of hard to duplicate for parody songs so

[00:47]sometimes it's cool if you just take maybe a song that's by a totally different band

[00:51]you're gonna hear that these songs were kind of hard to duplicate for parody songs so sometimes

[00:51]to do that i think it's fine let's turn on k-rob though just see what's going on aaron how's your

[00:55]rate you still listen to the radio aaron yeah mostly the jazz station mostly kcsm is the the

[01:00]other ones have too many commercials but yeah i do kcsm 91.1 i got some good good radio actually

[01:05]right now in fact tonight we're missing yeah right now it's in the soul kitchen from 8 to 10

[01:10]and then from 10 to 11 is the juke in the back so if we finish early enough i'll be in the back yeah

[01:16]nice what do you think what i think one girl that would do that in college

[01:21]juke in the back yeah only one yeah just one she didn't like it are you married you lived in the

[01:28]wrong dorm can you man i was thinking about when you tell that story about the girl stealing

[01:34]underwear like i can imagine grabbing mine and be like jesus christ what is going on with these

[01:41]why are these the weird legs here yeah why is this just a permit it seems like this

[01:47]discoloration is permanent really like it doesn't even make sense

[01:51]it's a color i've never seen in it's a color i've never seen in nature before uh let's turn on the

[01:56]radio and just hear what's on i like you know what forget it guys let's just do this everybody

[02:00]welcome to k-rob k-r-o-b things are not going well here oh yeah oh no i gotta get off of the

[02:07]podcast how do i get off this podcast i gotta get off i gotta get off of this podcast how do i get

[02:13]off the podcast you know you gotta get off of this podcast how do i get off a podcast

[02:18]we've had sure has

[02:21]been profound the quality of the show is going down going down i don't think that we'll be able

[02:30]to rebound our downloads have the emphasis on the down that last episode was junk yeah it really

[02:39]stunk whoa this was the test that we would have plunked this podcast could be defunct the last

[02:44]episode of junk our confidence has sunk oh it really felt like a skunk it totally

[02:51]blue chunks

[02:52]when you want to hear about the greatest how did you know that was gonna happen

[03:05]what if it was good you're just too lazy just a hunch

[03:10]somebody did say that bono was the world's biggest number two right

[03:21]jack who does number two work for we're going to talk about

[03:26]we we are all the way up to 136 for real this time and we are talking about mega brain by

[03:39]falling cadillac guys i uh the only problem i have with this episode is i feel like this is a

[03:45]rip-off to an album i did before it's about israeli self-defense oh yeah it was yeah it's

[03:50]called cross-border

[03:51]of my god brain

[03:52]this episode stunk this one also stunk it should be defunct i've got three guys here who agreed to

[04:05]change this podcast name to hunkadelic russell in minnesota russell how are you doing guys mother

[04:10]earth is pregnant for the third time for rob's ovipositor has knocked her up i have heard the

[04:15]maggots in the mind of the main host and i was mildly offended for i knew i had to listen to

[04:19]each episode or drown in

[04:21]my own shit and i've got i've got mad who wants to name it spunkadelic matt

[04:27]how are you doing matt rosie we have heard the maggots that is rob trying to make fun of you

[04:35]i was offended for one i appreciate that yeah we knew he had you gotta rise above it

[04:40]so we don't drown in all of rob's shit that is this podcast yes

[04:44]yes i feel like matt and i only both made it through the first lyric of the first song

[04:49]i wasn't gonna say anything uh and next up we have aaron now aaron was a little late getting

[04:55]here tonight because he was at the penis doctor i you know it's embarrassing to talk about but we

[04:58]all got to check it out you know sometimes you got to get in he was at the penis doctor but aaron

[05:02]said there was way too much small talk uh aaron how are you doing california rob when you base

[05:08]your love on credit and your love and days are done checks you signed with a love and kisses

[05:14]later come back signed insufficient funds let's talk about maggot brandon

[05:17]where is that

[05:19]what song is that uh that is great lyrics here and i love it right let's get into our voicemail

[05:25]now i just want to remind you guys our listeners will listen to these weeks apart

[05:30]so it's actually not gonna be the fault

[05:34]so it's not gonna see when you kiss my ass god our listeners are dumb shits they're just the

[05:40]dumbest of the dumb gotta make a nice one shits just the dumbest of the dumb

[05:44]dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb laughing but i'm not laughing

[05:49]my joke is funny no i thought this intro map put together had been eliminated from the board i

[05:55]thought we weren't using it anymore i just can't find the good ones i don't know where i put them

[05:59]and again there's a weak difference between this week and last week let's just remember uh so my

[06:04]final comment here guys i love the music you're introducing me to a whole handful of new albums

[06:09]that i'm never really concerned listening to listening to them through your clips on spotify

[06:13]reminds me of j term freshman year with professor alice hansen uh may she rest in peace

[06:19]uh she taught us everything about uh music theory american music history with a handful of your listeners

[06:24]um handful of them being steve pete manny joe from woodbury i think was in that class maybe not

[06:32]anyways uh time signatures keys measures american history of music taught us about

[06:39]uh black music being stolen by people like elvis and marty mcfly uh things like that

[06:44]taught us about syncopation where she'd go one two one two and and get in our face

[06:49]anyways my question this is i'm loving this i man you you caught with an alice hansen voicemail

[06:55]you're speaking to my heart my question to you is for all four of you what was your favorite j term

[07:01]class so of course i've i've edited that together so you could hear what he said at the end that he

[07:08]was asking what was the best j term class now we went to a school where every they had first semester

[07:13]second semester and then j term we had a class in the middle that was january so you could kind of

[07:18]go do go on trips or go just do a class what was your favorite j term class i will tell you i had

[07:25]one it was not that great it was martin luther where i just learned about martin luther now

[07:28]keep in mind i never went to church growing up i do not know anything about martin luther but the

[07:34]class i love the class because it was at 1 20 it was at 1 20 p.m and once i showed up late because

[07:39]i slept in just to go to show college rocks i actually took a class with aaron so i think it

[07:48]would have been our junior year and it's january obviously so we had a lot of snow that winter but

[07:53]aaron and i took a philosophy class it was called friendship love in the good life with professor

[07:58]corliss swain yes and it was just the most bizarre class ever and i remember there were a handful of

[08:05]snow days where they canceled classes which rarely ever happened as far as i remembered

[08:09]yeah but i think aaron and i had a point over a 30-day period where we didn't go to class for 16

[08:15]straight days i think it's either either had we either had weekends or we either had weekends or

[08:18]weekends snow days or we just flat out skipped it for 16 straight days so that was kind of the

[08:24]highlight but then it kind of came back to bite us in the ass because we had to do a final or we

[08:29]had to turn something in we had to answer all these questions and aaron and i had literally done

[08:33]zero percent of the work until the night before so but the jokes on corliss swain

[08:37]because we're still friends and we're living the good life so we learned something obviously from

[08:42]that class so we we ended up staying up all night to do the test and then the next night we

[08:48]went and saw rounders at the movie theater and i slept through the entire movie and woke up

[08:53]not knowing why john malkovich was eating oreos he beats me straight up that is a classic j term

[09:01]story of just like i remember i had a class where it was uh a theater class that i took and it was

[09:07]all about learning theater and i was so happy because every time we had to go see a show at

[09:11]the theater in minneapolis like the water pipes broke or it was too snowy and so i never actually

[09:16]had to go to the theater i was like yeah i remember i had to go to the theater and i was like yeah i

[09:18]remember just thinking to myself yeah no theater now i'm paying like three hundred dollars for a

[09:23]family of four to go see beetlejuice oh my god i don't know a thing i'm totally lost i also did a

[09:29]j term where i did uh my only international trip during college study abroad and i went to greece

[09:35]to get my art and my history credit and it was an amazing trip but when you're when you're in

[09:40]college you don't really appreciate those things right like you're in you're in athens and you're

[09:44]seeing the acropolis but the only thing you want to do is like go drink amstel light from the

[09:47]from the kiosk down the road right like when you're when you're 22 years old you don't appreciate the

[09:53]the most amazing things in the world do you but i mean but is it but is a kiosk of amstel light

[09:59]not one of the most amazing things in the world a kiosk it just tells you i'm still light that's

[10:03]incredible oh no i'm just meant like a stand at the end of the like we just we're more concerned

[10:08]about drinking beer than we were seeing the temple of zeus or the battle of marathon or those types

[10:13]i think your priorities are in the right place i feel like that's very greek though you know i mean

[10:17]like what would zeus do you know like what would zeus do you know like what would zeus do you know

[10:17]the answer is go to the amstel light kiosk i think you know you know what else yeah dressed as a bull

[10:23]so he could fuck the local milkmaid the other thing we did that was very greek rob we did dress

[10:29]up one day all the guys on our trip we probably have 30 people on our trip there was about nine

[10:33]guys we all went and bought spartan helmets and then showed up on the bus one morning all wearing

[10:39]full-on spartan helmets and just went and sat down on the bus like it was no big thing

[10:43]as a male graduate that makes me so proud

[10:47]that is russell i and that leads me to my next question okay this is going to kind of i was

[10:54]going to tell a different part of the story first yeah one of my greatest j-term trips is i went to

[10:59]russia to study uh the orthodox church there and i can say that to people for the rest of my life

[11:04]it's a lot of my kitchen hero thing i can just say oh yeah i studied the church in russia people

[11:08]think it makes me sound smart as shit and i love it i had a blast rob i use i studied art and

[11:13]history in greece that's no joke right oh that's really good that's really good

[11:17]really good but it made me think russell of the the best part of that trip to me right which is

[11:22]also kind of like you know with the trojans and stuff there was a guy who got laid by a local

[11:29]russian woman at the at the on the trip did any of you guys go with anybody that had sex with local

[11:35]women on college trips because that seems to be the real education i never did you guys did the

[11:41]abroad trips i never did i that was a mistake that was something i i did not oh not aaron aaron

[11:47]and then this trip it truly was a broad trip because this guy had sex with this woman who

[11:51]worked in the hotel lobby it was wild they rented their own room above the our floor

[11:56]and he took her up there and we had of course done you know college so you want to support a

[12:01]friend like it's i feel like this is a cultural exchange we taped a piece of paper that had the

[12:06]lyrics to the wild thing on it by tone look where it said uh this is what happens when

[12:12]bodies start slapping from doing the wild thing because we knew that she spoke or read no english

[12:17]here are two other memories i have a weird strange memories of the the uh what's it called a interim

[12:24]trip the study abroad one was one of the women who was on our study abroad group was a lady who

[12:30]worked in the post office at the school and so on this trip she started telling everyone about

[12:39]all the mail they got so she would be like russ i know you get sports illustrated i know you get

[12:44]these magazines i know like you get

[12:46]shipped like uh shipment like once a week i like she knew everything about everyone's mail and i

[12:52]thought it was the craziest thing ever was that nelly no it was not nelly oh it was like 85 years

[12:59]old man she ain't going to greece no different nelly oh different nelly i'm not gonna make you

[13:04]bleep out the name i think i think her name was amanda or something i forgot what her name was

[13:08]i think we've talked about her on this podcast before i think she might be the most successful

[13:12]person in our class oh that amanda yeah i was just talking to her at work the other day

[13:16]yeah she won't sit here in a book works for the new york times no different she knew everything

[13:20]about everyone's mail the other weird she's got a brain like an x like a dictionary yeah no for

[13:25]sure now did she ever mention that there was a victoria's secret subscription that came to dr

[13:30]roberto that's a good bit every time i got that in the mail i laughed the other one that was weird

[13:40]is so i don't know when you guys did your interim trips if you if you roomed with the same person

[13:44]the whole time if you switched it up

[13:46]how that worked but in ours you got assigned a roommate for the first like

[13:49]two nights when we were in a hotel and then whenever we'd move we would just switch it up

[13:53]and we tried to like the guys for example i think we roomed with everyone throughout like the 30

[13:58]days or whatever the first guy room with was like one of the few people i didn't know on the trip

[14:03]and i came back to the room once and he was taking a bath in the hotel room and i was like what the

[14:08]fuck who takes a bath when they have a roommate on like an interim trip is that weird very weird

[14:15]who likes to sit in their own room and i was like what the fuck who takes a bath when they have a

[14:16]roommate in their own shit you're just stewing in your own bald sweat the idea of taking a bath in a

[14:23]european bath so small when you have a roommate you don't know who lives who's gonna come back to

[14:29]the room doesn't even matter listen no i had a full i had a full conversation with both kids

[14:32]yesterday while i was in the bath there is no shame to just hang out and live in that bath

[14:36]lifestyle european baths all right they gotta be small you know it's not a big bathtub you're

[14:41]trying to scrunch in there that's trying to force a bath when it doesn't want to have a smaller

[14:46]oh well then why are you taking a bath i mean what's the point you don't feel like you're lighter

[14:50]get out of here i thought that i'll bring this up and then matt will have to comment we might

[14:57]have to delete this too but i always heard there was a sexual thing that happened on one of

[15:01]i don't know if it was matt's trip or another group of people's trips that did some sort of

[15:06]european trip where there was some sort of sexual escapade where the lady told the guy

[15:10]if we're gonna do this we gotta do this doggy style true or not true that's a legendary

[15:16]story yeah i have not heard that story i don't know what you're talking about russell tell that

[15:21]story again but tell it way slower why would you have to do a doggy style that's just what that was

[15:29]her request hmm feels it would feel a little insulting right like to ask the guy like oh i

[15:40]don't want you to sweat on my face okay i don't want you to breathe on my face like you you

[15:45]hurt my hips let's do a doggy style i mean imagine saying to a girl like oh we're gonna have to 69 it

[15:53]with me on top like this is not gonna fly not gonna fly listen i got one request and that is

[16:01]69 with me on top that would have been a great a great tinder opening line when i had my dating

[16:08]apps up and fully running my favorite part of this is that many other times i would apologize to the

[16:15]people who are watching this video for being so vulgar but nothing we say could be any more vulgar

[16:18]than anything george clinton ever thought about like the gloves are off tonight like you're

[16:22]pregnant mother earth three times yeah you're in good company oh that's the old fucking hole in

[16:28]the ground everybody does that not a big deal all right let's get into rolling going it's it's it's

[16:37]time to see what everybody's up to it's time for rolling going oh yeah

[16:45]and the thing about 69 with me on top is you know my balls would be right in your eye sockets

[16:50]it'd be like getting hit with two little bags of pre-cooked shrimp like devane shrimp

[16:55]how are you dealing uh see that feels like you're doing it wrong what are you being well wait i mean

[17:02]imagine this chair why no no you're right no no i was i i had my uh you had your direction wrong

[17:09]geometry wrong no yeah yeah okay i get it yeah you're thinking next time next time i see you

[17:14]maybe we'll

[17:15]okay don't worry my aaron when we hang out together we'll do a 96

[17:19]that's that'd be great okay that's where you're too tired in you okay i've already made that joke

[17:24]listen let's oh my god we haven't done rolling going yet uh hey has anybody here got a good

[17:30]rolling going i'll go first oh no russell said last week is too we're bad this is the second

[17:36]all right so i was actually out in south minneapolis matt's neck of the woods the other

[17:43]day yesterday actually

[17:45]and i went for a little south minneapolis tour i won't get into all the geography because

[17:49]i know aaron gets turned on and i know rob doesn't like when we talk about that stuff he doesn't like

[17:54]we talked about now we're talking about south minneapolis geography i was just that i would

[17:59]share where i went real quick and kind of tell you ask you guys a question about it but so the

[18:04]first place i went was a place called broder's pasta bar matt you've talked about this place

[18:08]before aaron 50th and penn this is one of your spots right yes yep so so i go into this pasta bar

[18:14]and and i was with a uh uh south minneapolis which one were you sorry not not to interrupt

[18:20]you weren't in the deli you were in like the the restaurant the fancy restaurant i was in i was in

[18:24]the restaurant area yes okay so go into the restaurant but my understanding of this is one

[18:28]of these restaurants where they don't take reservations so when you have a chance to go

[18:32]and you don't have to wait you just got to go for it right yeah so they opened at four me and this

[18:38]minneapolis south minneapolis adventurer we were in the area around four and it's like hey perfect

[18:43]opportunity go you don't have to wait we win fantastic spot one one of the best restaurants

[18:48]in the area no doubt right guys yep i haven't been there for 15 years but i still think about it

[18:54]but the coolest thing so we went i don't know if i've ever eaten there

[18:57]have i never eaten at a pasta bar that seems i'll tell you what though

[19:01]you gotta look out okay wait a minute i can make this work

[19:05]we're taking off we're taking oh i know what it is uh davy

[19:13]crockett once said oh yeah if you've gone too far your pasta bar oh god so sorry it's one of

[19:18]those nice guys my bad pasta bar pasta bar pasta bar how about this how about this how would we

[19:26]become a lawyer pasta bar thank you got it what an unbelievable comeback

[19:33]he's heating up he's on fire but so anyways this minneapolis adventure and i are there and we decide

[19:43]instead of going to the restaurant we're going to go to the restaurant and we're going to go to the

[19:43]bar and having a few drinks after we finish we're going to go hopping we're going we're going bar

[19:49]restaurant hopping in south minneapolis what's your guy's style when it comes to hopping do you

[19:54]like going from place to place or would you rather stay in one spot the whole night keep it moving i

[19:58]like hopping keep it moving keep it moving can i is there any noise that's louder than what i can

[20:03]hear the other person saying like is there any background noise if there is moving on let's go

[20:08]can't have a conversation at this point if there's any legitimate noise i have no idea what anybody's

[20:13]sometimes it's nice we decide to go hopping and so we actually decide to go next door the the sister

[20:19]restaurant if you will is called turzo it's got a wine bar so we go over to turzo and it's not really

[20:24]crowded or anything yet when we were leaving i did hear there was a two-hour wait to get into

[20:29]the pasta bar oh what a great i was curious it was a great feeling to know we beat it and then

[20:34]we were opening something up we were like being the gracious ones i was saying yeah have our spot

[20:38]right at the bar there but i'm curious what's your guys max amount of weight you would ever put into a

[20:43]restaurant if you were just going out on like a random friday night you know that has gone down

[20:48]so much as i got older i remember when i was younger it used to be like an hour 30 we'd be

[20:51]like oh yeah we'll go find somewhere to do we'll go get drinks now if they're like 20 minutes i'm

[20:55]like i'm old 20 minutes is a long time i could be going to sleep it feels like there's a lot of you

[21:02]know if if you can put your name in and if they can text you right so if they're like hey it's an

[21:06]hour wait but turzo right you know half a block away not even half just across the street here

[21:13]you know be back in five minutes or whatever it'd be all good you know like i'd wait an hour hour and

[21:19]a half for that kind of situation but like you throw kids in the mix you can't wait more than

[21:23]15 minutes if you get kids with you things like that so i don't know it feels like half hours

[21:27]kind of like a a good number but kind of depends on what the situation is too because can you can

[21:32]you just go belly up at the bar for a while you wait because typically if they tell you it's an

[21:36]hour i mean it's really more like 40 minutes 30 to 40 minutes right yeah you're not gonna tell you

[21:41]an hour when it's an hour and a half they're

[21:43]like they're like doctors that lie about like if you have some sort of terminal illness they're

[21:47]always like uh i'll give you about three four months and then when you make it a year it's

[21:51]like oh this is the best like the most gracious doctor ever i just i yeah i kicked it it's like

[21:56]when you tell the girl you have the it's like when you tell a girl you have the smallest penis

[21:59]they're ever gonna see yeah and they're like bro it's not that small it's like yep i'll take it

[22:04]thank you like it is the smallest one i ever saw but it's not as small it's not as bad as i expected

[22:08]yeah yeah the problem is when you do tell people that they still end up very disappointed as the

[22:13]only thing expectations were low and you delivered oh i thought this would be like measure up i thought

[22:20]this would be like a tall guy named tiny type thing so anyways we leave we leave broders the

[22:29]pasta was fantastic you that you can kind of see into the kitchen you can see him preparing

[22:33]everything there's nothing better than being at a restaurant where you can kind of see everything

[22:37]coming out of the window and then putting the final touches fantastic spot i was super excited

[22:42]i'd never eaten there before

[22:43]so it was really good i would highly recommend it so we decided we're going to go across the street

[22:47]to the wine bar the the sister wine bar owned by the same group we walk in and the the wine bar is

[22:53]full so we're like dang it but we asked like hey do you have any open tables they go we actually

[22:57]have one that we're holding open for walk-ins if you guys would like to have it we're like yes

[23:01]perfect we can walk in you're having oh my god yes so we walk in we sit down and we and up front we

[23:08]tell them hey we're not eating we're just gonna grab a drink or two and get some dessert maybe

[23:12]they're like perfect

[23:13]so we come in and we order dessert and we get this hazelnut chocolate cake which i thought you

[23:18]guys would all think look delicious that was delicious but the other thing on the menu that

[23:23]i just kind of bypassed was they had something called a cookie plate and in my mind i was just

[23:28]thinking this is going to be like chocolate chip cookies or something that's nothing really

[23:33]or a plate or a plate made out of cookies that when you eat the whole plate it's like a bread

[23:38]bowl but it's a cookie plate which i would devour i like this yeah i like this but the south

[23:43]minneapolis adventurer that i was with said we should ask about that because you never know what

[23:47]it's going to be and i'm never one not to ask and never not one not to double up so we we ask and

[23:53]they say oh it's got all these different things and they brought out this most amazing cookie

[23:57]plate it was like a bar plate if you will when you go to someone's holiday party right yes so

[24:02]so round two of our adventure has got wine some espresso a chocolate hazelnut cake and a cookie

[24:09]plate what do you guys think of that for round two of the south minneapolis adventure oh my

[24:13]god so give me an example what kind of bars are on this plate there russell i sent a picture the

[24:18]other day i sent a picture to you guys but i i couldn't tell you oh i ignored it i didn't look

[24:22]at it russell i didn't watch it okay how does that feel they were all different types of flavors

[24:28]rob there was some chocolate stuff there was some like macadamia nut type stuff nice there was

[24:33]fruitier bars or cookies it was really get the fuck out of here with those fruit bars it looked

[24:38]like a savory board like i didn't understand this was a cookie board you were showing us like this

[24:43]was all sweets aaron it was all sweets and a great way to like move on and you do hey dinner at one

[24:48]we're doing dessert at the next and then we decided we're going to do one more before we head back

[24:53]downtown out of south minneapolis we go to we go to george and the dragon have you guys ever been

[24:57]to george and the dragon before sounds all the time that's a good happy hour spot russell have

[25:02]a beer you know i don't i don't hate these sections guys but it does feel like i'm a

[25:06]passenger in the google maps car like that's what i feel like during these sections where i'm kind

[25:10]of driving around i see the street view i see like russell going

[25:13]in i thought i was going to forget that joke so i had to get it out sorry it was it was more not

[25:17]about the place rob it was about the adventure and about then you have so you do dinner and one

[25:22]dessert at one and then you grab a drink at the end of the night at the other one so i i thought

[25:27]like i would advise our listeners if you're feeling kind of stale with your going out and you're kind

[25:32]of going to the same spots every time try something new and bounce around and pick three spots that

[25:38]you're going to try to get to in one night you got to wait a little bit wait a little bit but do

[25:41]something new it's super fun and it's going to be a lot of fun and it's going to be a lot of fun

[25:43]it adds a little spice to your life and then we ended up downtown at kieran's which was which is

[25:49]like people are still celebrating saint patrick's day it's the night afterwards and matt either was

[25:54]a u2 cover band there and the guy that was playing the edges role was wearing like a skull cap just

[26:00]like the edge would have worked just like david would have just like david a little more so i

[26:06]thought about you guys this is el salvador coming through my amplifier your bloody yanks

[26:13]and the other thing the other thing that was the best part of my night at the saint patrick's day

[26:18]because this is like when you've gone to a few like slower almost like family type restaurants

[26:23]or bars right and then you go downtown there's an immediate shift in the vibe the noise everything

[26:30]right and so i got there and i was with my cousin and some friends probably three four people so if

[26:36]we had five six total people my cousin looks at me at one point he's got to work the next he goes

[26:40]just so you know my intention is to be home and in bed before ten o'clock and i'm like oh my god

[26:43]and i'm like yes thank god we do not have to do like the full night out here this is just like a

[26:49]one two drink thing and then the night is over i was like this is perfect a perfect night out

[26:54]it's it's we went we went did drag bingo the other day at nordstrom's okay don't ask but we love it

[27:01]because nordstrom closes at eight so the drag bingo has to be done at eight you just have to

[27:05]leave because the store is closed and it's great because you just know like i'm gonna be home by

[27:09]eight thirty i'm gonna go walk the dog nine thirty i'm in bed like it's

[27:13]you're gonna have fun and it's not you don't have to have that thing of like when am i gonna go when

[27:16]am i gonna go i was at i was in a situation the other night where i was in a what when am i gonna

[27:21]go situation and guess what i i did what'd you do had my kid call the adult i was with and say i

[27:27]needed to come home yes i texted her i was like you gotta call this person and say you need me at

[27:33]home and she's like what are you talking about i said i'd do it for you just do it right now i'm

[27:43]i gotta go home take care of this kid rolling going man how's it going with you uh good rosie

[27:50]was talking about listening to radio i've been just hammering 89.3 the current and so a couple

[27:56]couple new artists that i had never heard of before and so i i asked rob to pull them up

[28:02]here quick so russell i want you to listen to this band it's called the beta band i want you

[28:06]to tell me who this sounds like here

[28:13]oh my god this sounds so much like back i thought it was back i'm like i was waiting for it i'm like

[28:24]i'm like who what what is this bait you know is back part of some super group or something

[28:29]no it's just a scottish group called the beta band and they've had a couple you know a couple

[28:34]albums that are out but all of a sudden you know they're listening to the late 90s beta band and

[28:39]i'm like it's like beck jr so it sounds like the beta band and you gotta you gotta know

[28:43]the scene in high fidelity where they where he says i will now sell three copies of the

[28:47]three eps by the beta band and he puts the beta band on in the record store and everyone's like

[28:51]what is this i gotta buy this right now god i didn't remember that yes i don't remember it so

[28:56]all right good poll we're all so smart equally

[28:59]next one it's divided equally between all of us yeah and this artist rosie you might have but uh

[29:07]so then you got daniel ponder in the song the only way out and i haven't listened too much of it but

[29:11]every time this song comes up

[29:13]this comes on the current it just wails and she gets to the you know what i think daniel ponder

[29:20]should be doing bond songs singing about bond 100 yeah this is a bond singer if i've ever heard one

[29:29]yeah yeah so i don't know you know we're a music podcast aren't we rosie yeah i think this is a

[29:33]music podcast i just you know my my news i think as i get older i'm turning into more of a snob i

[29:38]love listening to the current what they've got to say for new i like your new albums awesome

[29:43]new artists they haven't heard of thank you man yeah um but the okay quick question we'll make it

[29:49]quick tonight there was i'm trying to get through my list you guys know i make a list and sometimes

[29:53]i put a lot of stuff on sometimes i don't remember what the hell i said yeah so i have to go through

[29:58]all this stuff but i put on there was this huge controversy that the bidens went to a restaurant

[30:03]so dr biden and president biden went to a restaurant doctor the exact same okay they

[30:13]and it was like this huge complete controversy that they would both order the same exact sure

[30:19]really yeah do you guys have a problem with this because i have absolutely zero problem with this

[30:24]impeach his ass okay not my president i can tell you what not my president would not order the same

[30:30]meal as the wife when you're going out to eat that's crazy you want you could get something

[30:35]else and then you split each meal that's insane to get the same meal they want like if they like

[30:40]shouldn't they just eat no no you are

[30:42]you

[30:43]i heard we're indicting one president on tuesday let's indict another one

[30:47]one for us money one for chicken parm i'm gonna go down to the capital and tell them what i think

[30:54]again i mean i'm with you guys right jeez i mean you guys know me right like i hate vegetables

[31:01]and sarah is basically a vegetarian right so it's been the joke of our relationship

[31:06]ever since we yeah the classic jack spratt situation right okay i would love to get into

[31:13]that situation we could either split a meal right i don't need you don't need to eat that much food

[31:17]that comes on the plate all the time so just split a chicken can you give her the salad is that what

[31:22]you're yeah that kind of a thing but i we're never going to be i just i don't know if we're ever going

[31:27]to be there as a couple but are you guys do you guys go out and split meals or is it like a you

[31:32]order one thing and i'll order the other one you know i would say i went up when i go out with the

[31:36]foodie that i that i had met a while back we almost always split stuff we always almost always kind of

[31:43]take a team approach and say like hey what looks good to you yeah and we'll pick stuff that we know

[31:48]we're gonna split but i have also i would never mock anyone for getting what they want to get

[31:53]like if someone wants if both of them want the chicken parm they should both get the chicken

[31:58]parm right nothing else in the menu look good like no so it's not it's not my style but i would never

[32:03]everyone's got their own thing that they're looking for i would never say anything about

[32:06]what other people are doing with food or drinks i won't even let jenny and i get the same dinner at

[32:11]a wedding when there's only like three

[32:13]options we are getting something different just in case i mean really like like here's how it goes

[32:19]for us matt is that uh we both pick a meal we talk a lot about what we're gonna get there's

[32:23]usually something i'm not sure about and then she ends up you know getting something that she wants

[32:28]but i she checks in with me if it's also something i want and then she eats about half of that and

[32:32]then i eat my plate and that and she has a little stab off my plate so i mostly eat her dinner

[32:37]her dinner that dinner seems that story seemed a lot funnier in my head when

[32:43]i started my apologies just a little stab and then i eat her speaking of eating someone else's

[32:49]dinner i gotta watch how i do this but uh

[32:52]keep the other night uh me and this dessert fan we had we had these two desserts we had a piece

[33:01]of carrot cake and a piece of cheesecake and it was kind of the end of the night and we were

[33:07]watching tv or something like that and this uh the dessert aficionado fell asleep or weren't awake

[33:12]i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry

[33:13]i was asleep for about at least an hour uh-huh i decide i'm gonna eat the carrot cake oh i eat the

[33:19]whole thing that's an alpha move wrestle and i love it the whole thing and i didn't really think

[33:23]much of it when this person woke up i was kind of mentioned hey i put that cheesecake in the fridge

[33:28]the carrot cake is now gone and this person i was with legit had a shit fit out oh no the carrot

[33:34]what are your guys thoughts on eating something like that was it established that half of that

[33:40]should have been hers it was probably

[33:43]implied it there was never a conversation but i was definitely in the wrong i would start throwing

[33:49]elbows if i was in that if i was i am completely on this this foodies side it's not an exaggeration

[33:57]russell to say that you should be executed that is not right well that is the way they treated me

[34:02]i'll just put it that way so i've started doing it like i'll go to you know one of these pizza

[34:07]places and i'll get a piece and i'll purposely like bring half home because i love day old pizza

[34:12]like the next day i'll get a piece and i'll purposely like bring half home because i love

[34:13]day eating you know you know stuff like that so i'll bring home for lunch you know but the kids

[34:17]will be like oh i'm gonna have lunch today and oh dad's got pizza there i'll have the pizza and i'm

[34:21]like no the worst and i just i'm not i you know if they want great have it guys have it you know

[34:29]whatever and but it is it's it's getting to that point i'm trying to figure out maybe when they're

[34:34]like 13 when i can start just saying get your own goddamn pizza from their 529 like yeah you guys

[34:43]here's all i know russell is if i woke up from my slumber especially with carrot cake okay god

[34:48]carrot cake and i thought to myself i am gonna go have a little just a nibble this is a little

[34:53]schnibble of the secure test in the fridge just a little stab and you tell me that it's gone

[35:00]because you ate it while i was sleeping yes i would fucking go ballistic i would do like the

[35:06]ice pick under the bed it would be so bad and i'll say what's the cheesecake in there for you

[35:13]i didn't eat both of them i just took one of the two i don't want the cheesecake russell what i

[35:17]wanted was the carrot cake and that's why we ordered it you know and if it was if it was me

[35:22]russell that's the only way i get vegetables is by eating carrot cake so you know like now you're

[35:26]just making me now i don't want to eat dessert when i'm not hungry i want to wait until i'm

[35:32]hungry russell and i didn't get a chance because you ate it and now i'm mad so can i tell you when

[35:37]this person got legit upset not jokingly upset i thought it was joking upset at first and i realized

[35:42]it was legit upset i kind of did i kind of laughed and mocked i started saying oh poor you and then

[35:53]that didn't go very well russell if it's anything like what i'm dealing with i can tell you that is

[35:58]very bad to do it sounds related to things that they sounds like they don't like to be mocked

[36:07]it sounds familiar in a way sometimes they hear themselves being mocked sometimes somebody's just

[36:12]editing a podcast without headphones on and they hear them being mocked and they get really mad

[36:17]about it oh poor you you didn't get any carrot cake oh oh i'm sorry are you putting something

[36:23]on the internet where you're talking about 69 in the on top

[36:25]you know

[36:33]no it's me i think rob went didn't he rob already went no i didn't go no rob isn't gone don't go for

[36:42]a ride

[36:42]how dare you guys i'm sorry uh listen i'm gonna do what i've always done in group work and i'm

[36:50]gonna say that before our last podcast i forgot about this last podcast we were talking about

[36:54]how my kids are watching making me watch joe exotic again tiger king right and it's even i

[36:59]listen if you don't watch the last couple episodes it's funny it's fun it's perfect

[37:03]filmmaking the characters are unbelievable this might be the perfect characters like it's the

[37:07]best characters ever so we get on the podcast and before matt gets on so we're not recording

[37:12]aaron

[37:12]goes aaron why don't you tell us what story do you have about the tiger king

[37:16]what's that it's not necessarily about the tiger king and uh i want to keep this respectful because

[37:22]again my parents might listen to this but uh i think the tiger king was operating in missouri

[37:28]at certain points in his career and i have in fact uh i've been to an exotic animal fair in

[37:34]chile with my grandpa i've been and so it's possible like it's possible that i like it's

[37:42]it was there was there's some auctioning going on i'm just saying like there's there's a non-zero

[37:47]probability that i was actually a place where the tiger king was like auctioning a baby cub

[37:52]i've got a tiger cub yes it's eyes are crossed because it's so inbred but what i get it was

[37:58]never i never saw tigers but i saw i saw definitely pretty sure i saw an ostrich uh definitely there

[38:04]was a wolverine and a badger the wolverine was like very docile the badger was not um peacocks

[38:11]things of that nature so yeah i think i have been thanks we were in this we were gonna get a

[38:15]we were gonna get a mascot for this podcast it was gonna be a badger and then rob said

[38:19]we don't need no stinking badges oh my god so good listen i love my father-in-law i think he's great

[38:26]i could 100 see him buying an ostrich and coming home with an ostrich and just be like

[38:30]guess what fuckers we got an ostrich now like we're gonna hang out this is my big plan we're

[38:34]gonna do ostrich stuff i actually there was an ostrich farm by my in-laws place and so you'd go

[38:41]there they look so delicious like if you really look at an ostrich its leg doesn't have any

[38:47]feathers on it it looks like the biggest turkey drumstick you've ever seen in your life you'd eat

[38:51]from the flintstones or something right told you put it on your car and tip right over that's all

[38:55]my god so so you went you've been to an exotic animal place here and yeah it was like an auction

[39:02]it was in chili coffee missouri i remember going there with my grandpa and i didn't think anything

[39:05]of it it was like oh they're here you know trading animals but i but now having watched joe

[39:11]i realized like oh maybe that wasn't you know entirely on the up and up so you didn't what what

[39:17]what if you had to buy an exotic animal what exotic animal would you i mean how bad did you

[39:21]want a monkey as a kid yeah we bought an animal yeah what we had we we bought it we we owned our

[39:28]sophomore year of college for probably three four months we owned a black emperor scorpion we did

[39:34]we had a scorpion and we had it in like a little terrarium i always wanted one of those was that

[39:41]as exciting as it sounds i think it was depressed i don't think it was happy we would feed it might

[39:46]not have had it in the right climate yeah now let me ask you this happy did he ever do that thing

[39:50]that scorpions do where they um throw a spear on a rope and go get over here i had a ferret in

[39:57]college did you know that that's just gross i had a ferret at the time and this is how cool of a

[40:02]roommate i am i didn't really talk to my roommate about buying it i just bought it with the cage and

[40:06]this might surprise you i bought the cage i bought a big cage bigger than you need those things stink

[40:11]out that yes indeed ferrets do stink very badly it turns out that women do not like having rodents

[40:18]in the room when you're trying to chat them up okay they don't like that squeaking the smell

[40:25]it turns out ferrets will bite you way more than you think they will snack on you and it

[40:30]and it also turns out that maybe if a week later you sit on your recliner

[40:34]and then later you're wondering where the ferret is he's gone he gets he got his head smashed

[40:41]and died almost instantly under that recliner so problem took kind of took care of it's true

[40:45]huh is this true yeah of course you sat on the ferris no i sat on the chair which pushed down

[40:53]on the ferret that's because people think this is like a soprano situation where i sat on the

[40:57]ferret and i didn't feel that it was moving because i'm so fat uh-uh i sat on the chair

[41:01]which squashed the ferret and listen i felt bad about it for a day but that was one of the worst

[41:06]purchases i've ever made in my life you had a ferret that you let out of the cage in a dorm room

[41:11]oh yeah it was in a cage the first time we've heard of it yeah well i sat on it you think i

[41:16]like telling this story guys this is not a great story for me to tell was but you let it out like

[41:20]you let it roam out of the cage and run around your room yeah of course i was weird ferret guy

[41:25]for like a week wow that is awful yeah not great i know yeah it's pretty weird i had weird pets

[41:32]though growing up i had a tarantula we did have the scorpion and we did reach the point where we

[41:36]would let it out and i would let it walk we we were pretty liberal letting it walk around and

[41:41]like walk on your hand oh my god the thing that was so disappointing was it never stung anything

[41:46]it wouldn't sting anything we put the only thing that it did was cool is if you if you we did feed

[41:51]it crickets yeah and then one time we fed it a baby mouse right so you threw the mouse in there

[41:57]and it took like a day for it to eat it are you serious it's dead serious god no wonder we're

[42:03]such good friends we're so cool i mean this is probably i gotta be careful here but let's not

[42:09]say how it died well rob said it was a good friend it was a good friend it was a good friend it was

[42:11]sad on it this is a lot worse isn't there what i don't i mean didn't it just die over christmas

[42:15]break wait yeah we left it in the dorm over christmas break we came back it was no longer

[42:20]yeah yeah what are you gonna do no i'll tell you what that's better than somebody sitting on it and

[42:24]then talking about it on a podcast not great you're the one who went to the exotic pets pet

[42:30]place i wasn't my rolling going it's true that was my real going rolling going aaron how's it

[42:35]going with you it's going good i don't want to take too much time because we got to get to this

[42:39]album i'm very excited to talk about it

[42:41]i gotta give two shout outs tonight one two is to my wife who is a fan of the podcast

[42:48]i was down at the market uh last week late in the week and i sent her a text and i said do you think

[42:56]anybody in the house would eat fish for dinner because like it's a constant struggle like what

[42:59]the fuck is my son gonna eat yeah and she was like yeah you know try it like maybe it's maybe

[43:04]it'll be fine and i texted her back and i said okay if anything looks good i'll grab it you

[43:11]yep if anything gives you an rhe go for it

[43:15]an rhe yep rock hard erection i know what you're talking about she's a loyal listener she's in

[43:24]she is clever she's a loyal listener she knows what happens when it gets when it gets too hard

[43:30]yeah yeah so i gotta give her a shout out for that and then the second shout out i gotta give

[43:34]this is from a couple weeks ago but aaron did you did you find anything that uh got your diamond

[43:38]cutter going or not no you know i don't know

[43:40]honestly i didn't because there was some well there was some mountain lobs and trout

[43:44]which i i thought about because like that's good stuff but i didn't think the particular piece that

[43:49]was on the top i didn't think it was great and i had to walk over to the coffee shop which is at

[43:54]the other end of the so it was going to be at least a full 30 minutes before i got home i didn't

[43:59]have a cooler bag or ice in the car so i not only did i not get an rhe it just felt like it wasn't

[44:04]the right time to buy fish yeah you can't be walking through a coffee shop with an rhe that's

[44:09]for damn sure yeah you can't be walking through a coffee shop with an rhe that's for damn sure

[44:10]those tables are all at the wrong height you know everybody just reading their paper drinking

[44:16]their coffee they're at the wrong height yeah and then actually that reminds me uh we were we were

[44:24]talking about what reminds you yeah we were talking about everything everywhere all at once

[44:29]uh before the last before last week's podcast and anna and i were talking about this last night

[44:34]apparently the daniels the directors directed the video for turndown for what have you guys

[44:40]video this man is breaking stuff with his rock hard erection like it's all about yes it's a whole

[44:47]video with rhes and dudes breaking stuff with them when i made you do my rolling going because i was

[44:53]too bored that's funny when you're making me do a video breakdown on your rolling going that's sick

[45:00]okay that's a sick use of my time it came up it's like this man's erection is breaking things

[45:07]wait where would i find this it's just you don't

[45:10]have to go very long yeah right here oh for real what is going on this is insane

[45:18]what is this literally like doing the worm on the floor and breaking things with his rhe

[45:23]yes oh my god what is going on

[45:30]throwing bottles at him oh no she's got a baseball bat there's no way yep smash she broke it on like

[45:40]bo jackson's

[45:40]style right on his rhe oh my god oh my god he just knocked all her clothes off all of her clothes off

[45:46]guys this is what we're devoting the rest of this podcast to

[45:50]i mean it's really alan jackson that didn't do this one it really works like george clinton

[45:56]would be way into this it's perfect it all fits into the the funkadelic you know style

[46:01]oh now she just sat on his head and he's going through the floor and they're falling through

[46:08]to the second level it's like

[46:10]inception how is this not in like a museum of the greatest things ever i mean this music video is

[46:18]spectacular and so you're like oh this is how these guys honed their style was doing i think

[46:24]i think brian from woodbury should show his kids this one this seems appropriate now her boobs are

[46:29]getting bigger and moving around i mean this you could you could argue this is a top 10 music video

[46:35]of all time right yeah it's pretty fantastic oh i would say so creep one of a kind i would say number

[46:40]one is creep one of a kind i would say number one is creep one of a kind i would say number one is

[46:40]creep number two is uh that salt and pepper one where they're on the beach number three is parts

[46:46]of the aerosmith video trilogy four is rump shaker yeah four is rump and five of course is this is how

[46:52]we do it by montel jordan which starts with the guy with the sandwich which i always point out

[46:56]it's true so that's it those are my those are my shots out for tonight so i i um appreciate my lady

[47:03]listening to the podcast and introducing me to the turn down for one video and now time to hit

[47:07]time to hit the closing credits huh rob no wait a minute now yes don't

[47:10]i'll tell you why the show let's talk about the album yes so listen this is the album aaron has

[47:18]been talking about and can i tell you how shocked i was that aaron's favorite album has a song that

[47:24]is just a 10-minute guitar solo started off i was like wow this is the most aaron thing i've ever

[47:29]seen in my entire life uh so maggot brain and i think it's important i was talking about this

[47:35]earlier but it's this is 1971 this is way early compared to a lot of the albums we've

[47:40]listened to i think when you're listening to this you have to keep this mind of like

[47:44]this is kind of riding right on that psychedelic wave like this would this would have fit right in

[47:49]yet that the the production on this i think is so good it sounds just awesome uh rolling stone

[47:55]2003 said this album is 486 on the list come on next time 2012 479 now with this one guess what

[48:05]they realized that it had gotten rolling boned and it should have been all the way up to 136 which

[48:10]is where it resides now one of the biggest jumps of all of the albums this is the final album

[48:15]recorded by the original funkadelic lineup after this album was released listen to this

[48:20]the band disbanded after drummer tiki fullwood was fired due to drug use

[48:25]yes imagine getting kicked out by george clinton for using too many drugs what would that even mean

[48:33]what does it even look like i don't know yeah yeah and then miles davis loved this album so

[48:37]much that they picked him up as a drummer uh the guitarist

[48:40]got into a acid eating contest by the way not not just gonna lay this out there right now the

[48:47]official beck did a better view on acid eating contest is thumbs down don't do it down also

[48:53]don't do it russell what if you and your date get two tabs of acid to bring home

[48:58]do not eat half of one while they're sleeping what if i leave the other one though that's okay

[49:02]no it's not i'm serious russell seriously you have to know how bad that is apparently that

[49:06]tears your stomach up too but the guitarist in question is eddie hazel we're gonna get back to

[49:10]him later

[49:10]uh and then the uh that so then since then they snorted raw speed and then has never performed

[49:18]the guitar since so it sounds like a good time for this band so what is it can you just tell me

[49:23]aaron what is funkadelic's deal like they just seem to do all weird stuff how much time do you

[49:28]have because i have been doing a lot of prep on this album hours reading george clinton's

[49:33]autobiography brothers be like yo george ain't that funking kind of hard on you and this is they

[49:40]were they were doing a lot of prep on this album and then they were doing a lot of prep on this album

[49:40]they were they were a detroit band in a lot of ways so so they were in new jersey um when they

[49:47]got together and george was so george was from north carolina he eventually ended up in plainfield

[49:52]new jersey he was a hairdresser and then was you know wanted to be a musician he was a songwriter

[49:57]and they really set their sights on motown so they spent a lot of time in detroit trying to

[50:02]uh get in with motown in fact they even had one song i want to testify that was on the motown

[50:07]label so they were going for that motown sound and eventually they were able to get in with motown

[50:10]they just realized they didn't fit in and um by the time this album came around they had they had

[50:16]recorded one album called osmium as parliament previously they were the parliaments a sort of

[50:22]doo-wop group um but but by the time this album came around um george realized two things one was

[50:30]that he was very interested in the rock and roll that was happening in england he was very much

[50:35]thinking about jimmy hendrix all the time and he really thought he saw all these british bands doing

[50:40]american rock and he said wait if if white bands can take black music and do that why can't we as

[50:45]a black rock band take white music and do what we want to do and he was always thinking about

[50:49]jimmy hendrix and the other thing that really fucked him up was he said i cannot write songs

[50:54]about specifics because then i'd be competing against smoky robinson and smoky robinson was

[51:00]writing specific love songs in a way that no one could top so george said i've got to go bigger

[51:05]i've got to think of bigger ideas i got to get cosmic and yes he did then

[51:10]start thinking about the the other strains of thought that were going on in the late 60s that

[51:15]had to do with people coming from aliens and then they they borrowed some briefly they borrowed some

[51:21]of the texts from this process church which uh then once the the sharon tate murders happened

[51:27]there was a lot of more more attention on potential cult-like groups and george realized

[51:32]that it was not perhaps a great idea to be affiliating yourself with the process church

[51:36]so that's it that's that's their deal as a band i think the beach boys

[51:40]found out you don't want to be associated with charles manson like it's just something that you

[51:43]bring up over and over right um so let's start off so basically this is a seven song album

[51:50]it's like what 40 minutes 36 minutes a great length of the album and it starts with the

[51:57]titular track here this is a big and would you say aaron would you say this is one of the longest

[52:04]titular tracks we've seen ever it's a long soulful titular track it's not it's not it's not

[52:10]it's the rhe of a titular track it is yep it's a this is this is a long titular track maggot brain

[52:17]and this is eddie hazel on guitar

[52:20]the legend for this song is that clinton was taking lsd and told his guitarist

[52:28]play as if you just found out today that your mother had passed away and what would that feel

[52:33]like an inspiration pretty amazing guitar solo right or i don't know if you call it a solo i

[52:40]mean i mean it's instrumental there's no words but my understanding aaron is they like they had

[52:46]the drums they had more bass and they drowned it out is that right they stripped it out yeah i mean

[52:51]so george clinton went back into the studio and took out a lot of the other instruments there is

[52:55]an alternate take out there somewhere that has the other instruments added back in so i think

[53:00]most of what you hear is eddie hazel's guitar tone and george clinton's mother called eddie hazel

[53:09]crying eddie

[53:09]because he could make the guitar sound like it was crying so most of what you hear is is wizardry

[53:15]but later in the track you get there's a lot more sound sort of effects going on and what clinton

[53:21]said was he echoplexed everything back on itself i don't know what echoplexing means

[53:25]but there's some um so matt talked about you know studio i knew a girl who could do that my

[53:30]sophomore year in class you can do an echoplex and so some of us it's a sort of like combination

[53:36]you know what was eddie doing what was george clinton doing

[53:39]aaron the so that you have like the funkadelic parliament the p funk all starts is is george

[53:45]clinton the only common thread between all the groups or explain to me all the different groups

[53:51]yeah i think he probably is the the only common thread there are others who played on a lot of

[53:56]this stuff but funkadelic was sort of the so there was the parliaments then there was parliament

[54:01]briefly funkadelic came next funkadelic was basically like 70 to 74 or 5 i think and then

[54:09]parliament funk or parliament what later became known as parliament funkadelic or p funk sort of

[54:15]came along so they started as a rock band eventually went more into r&b and funk and

[54:21]george clinton was kind of the through line so when they got bootsy collins and maybe 74 that's

[54:26]when they started to do more more funk and then they broke off they were still recording as both

[54:30]so funkadelic was still recording for a the westbound label and the warner brothers label

[54:35]and parliament was recording for another label where's p funk fit in all this

[54:39]that's a good question i i mean i think they they may have been known as p funk as well

[54:45]for periods of time but when they started with funkadelic they went from parliament to funkadelic

[54:50]and they would say it's a parliament funkadelic meant thing so it was always the lines were kind

[54:54]of blurred well they probably shouldn't have so much asparagus and that's how i get that p funk

[54:59]i don't know

[55:00]yes i appreciate you can you get to that features isaac

[55:09]hayes backing vocal group hot butt dirt soul yes this is the jam this is my favorite song on the

[55:16]album yeah and this coming after mega green it's like just a ray of sunshine you can definitely

[55:23]hear a motown influence here can't you yeah oh yeah it was just one of my favorite parts i don't

[55:28]know if you guys heard it i don't know aaron i could be wrong maybe you can clarify i don't know

[55:31]if it's george clinton or or ray davies but there's a super low voice you know which one it is yeah

[55:38]check this out

[55:39]this is fantastic the super low bass voice guy right yes it sounds great

[55:47]this lyric was from an mlk speech there it is yeah what did they say rosie when you base your

[55:59]love on credit and your love and days are done checks you sign with 11 kisses later come back

[56:04]sign insufficient funds insufficient funds but this get this

[56:09]it's all it's like this podcast insufficient fun i i but this guy just started making me think about

[56:15]like who are the other great bass vocalists in music history so i think we can do a quick list

[56:20]of the best low bass vocals in music history here for it here for it

[56:25]i wonder who will be the lowest voice on the list

[56:38]first one on the list i don't even know i think he might sing more in baritone i think don't think he

[56:42]always sings in bass maybe eric can answer this but he definitely does an intro in the bass voice

[56:47]that gets the ladies going this is barry white can't get enough of your love i think that's his

[56:52]regular voice right it doesn't seem to me like it's enough he can get away with eating a girl's

[57:01]carrot cake easy right he would just say baby i'm sorry yeah it's just not enough

[57:06]oh no

[57:08]but you're right he was unique because he didn't necessarily

[57:13]he sings in this register he didn't sing yeah it's different isn't it yeah he had that low

[57:18]speaking voice but he's one of the only guys who's like hello i'd like to come in to sing today

[57:23]the next song on the list this is the oak ridge boys the songs elvira

[57:38]you know that his balls touched his cowboy boots i mean those had to be the longest balls

[57:52]ever making that note whoa next song on the list and you know and you know his pubic hair

[57:59]looked like his beard you guys know which elvira guy i'm talking about yeah the long beard

[58:04]next song on the list this is a band we've actually talked about numerous times

[58:08]and i did start researching this guy it turns out this guy does have some sort of uh really bad

[58:13]disease so we kind of get a watch but this is this is yeah yeah this is boys

[58:20]on bended knee and this is where he is making a low bass voice apology girl i'm sorry every guy

[58:28]my age our age knows how this starts yeah i'm sorry baby

[58:32]baby i'm sorry yes please forgive me

[58:38]what was worse was in jay-z covering this on the 444 album

[58:47]baby i'm so sorry i know that when we went to the restaurant and we picked the dessert together

[58:53]you thought you were gonna get part of that carrot cake and then when you woke up

[58:57]that carrot cake was gone and you knew that i got to taste all the carrot cake i could have easily

[59:03]taken only half the carrot cake gotten just a taste and that would have been fine but baby

[59:08]no i'm sorry baby i'm so sorry i know that when we went to the restaurant and we picked the dessert together

[59:08]i know i ate the whole carrot cake and for that i am truly sorry but instead of doing that i decided

[59:15]to say oh poor you you didn't want it russell did the poor you

[59:23]this is a fantastic song oh my god oh what did you guys picture he had done wrong

[59:33]when i listened to this song i was like what do you think he did wrong i was like what did he

[59:37]get the wrong person to do wrong i was like what did he get the wrong person to do wrong i was like

[59:38]what did he get the wrong person to do wrong i was like what did he get the wrong person to do wrong

[59:38]i mean there's there's only one dude you got a low low bass voice like that there's a lot you could

[59:44]have done wrong out there right like there's no there's it's there's no limit rob you're gonna

[59:48]you're gonna have to just cut that baby i'm sorry every time every time jenny get in trouble with

[59:54]jenny he's gonna start playing that all right done next time on the list we've actually talked

[59:59]about this artist we were talking about this artist on a text chain and this is not the song

[60:03]that someone had requested from rob but it's another great song from a low

[60:07]bass voice artist this song is house of the rising sun it's by white buffalo check this

[60:12]beginning out he's got a great low voice

[60:15]that's almost out otherworldly isn't it wow

[60:23]this guy's name is white buffalo and it's yeah badass badass go the distance

[60:32]one of the greatest songs out there what was the box was it friends both who was the white buffalo

[60:36]aaron wow you did get that yes all right

[60:41]rob just hit that intro again that first note is the best isn't it it sounds like he's doing

[60:48]that tibetan throat singing you know what i mean yeah don't and don't make me tell any jokes about

[60:53]that because i'm not going to yeah isn't that amazing yeah that's got to be altered somehow

[61:01]right that's great i don't know man he's one of those big balls guys he's got a low bass voice

[61:06]low voice guys with low voices they often have big brown balls really so you think that you know how

[61:12]we talked before like about the tidy thing like if you got to undersell that are there there's got to

[61:17]be low bass voice guys out there who don't don't have what it takes don't have the fire down below

[61:21]right that's gonna be the worst girl i just have to tell you this is the smallest penis you've ever

[61:28]seen as big as it sounds all right last song on the list i know matt said he liked this song once

[61:35]we've done this song hallelujah once before this is leonard cohen doing hallelujah maybe the greatest

[61:40]song ever written greatest song ever written most awkward sex scene ever filmed he filmed the

[61:46]watchman oh yeah oh god i went into my mr skin mode where i thought about the sex scenes in every

[61:57]show i've ever seen i was like it goes like this the fourth the fifth leonard cohen wrote it right

[62:05]yeah he did yeah it's been uh

[62:08]i like the other one i like the buckley

[62:15]i'm jeff buckley yeah but so that's it that's the list of the greatest low voice

[62:22]songs oh great list good one i have to i have to i just have to throw trace atkins out there

[62:30]from a country standpoint that guy back back in the 90s man there's another one

[62:35]one it's josh turner i think it is josh turner is that right he does a long black train and a few of

[62:41]those and it's those are really good well you know one of the classic all low voice guys how is andre

[62:46]the giant right like his low voice was so low anybody want to be anybody want to be

[62:52]russell is russell is missing out his wrestling and

[63:05]impression we should be doing a podcast for sure hey that's the other thing that doesn't work as a

[63:12]carrot cake apology is just your macho man impersonation doesn't help it a bit doesn't

[63:17]help a bit mrs elizabeth is coming in here trying to tell me i don't get to eat all the carrot cake

[63:23]she's out back sleeping and cream cheese frosting rose to the top and i ate it miss elizabeth

[63:31]yeah i just want you

[63:35]to picture this eric just picture you're married and say to me you're going to be you're going to

[63:39]be uh the the woman in this and you say to me did you eat the carrot cake i'm upset about you eating

[63:44]the carrot cake i'm i i thought there was some carrot cake left did you are you mad at me are

[63:50]you mad at me for you the carrot cake get out of here you know you're just joking you mad at me

[63:54]you know the carrot cake you don't look like i ate all the carrot cake whiny baby just go buy

[63:59]yourself some more oh you woke up thinking you're gonna have carrot cake and you didn't

[64:03]because i ate the whole piece

[64:05]okay i didn't even enjoy the last part of it just shoved it down

[64:07]really only wanted half i didn't want to leave half though that's true you really don't ever

[64:13]need the whole piece why are you mad at me god you're always yelling at me that's the move i

[64:19]pull out at that point god you know i'm just joking i'm just trying to have fun not everything's a

[64:24]joke rob yeah i've come full circle nobody's ever told me that before and i've never even

[64:30]told this to my kids and had my eyes rolled to the back of my head as i said it

[64:34]just to quit goofing around you're just goofing around oh you think it's funny to say things that

[64:39]are offensive just to get a laugh who taught you this i'm watching you dad hey rob i was

[64:47]wondering if you could explain to me uh what the title on the next song means hit it and quit it

[64:51]hit it and quit it what does it mean

[64:56]hmm sounds like sounds like we need brian from woodbury to call in and explain this up

[65:04]it's so interesting you say the motown thing i can hear it yeah i mean that's how you know

[65:10]you know this sounds like to me big time frank zappa i get a lot of frank zap out of this i mean

[65:17]i think they yeah i think they were running in the same circles yeah uh and this is bernie or

[65:22]this is bernie orrell singing on this one i believe and then bernie is also playing organ

[65:28]and russell you asked on the last track if that was george clinton or ray davies and george clinton

[65:32]doesn't actually sing that much on this album

[65:34]and it's one of the things that people sort of pointed to as why funkadelic never got huge was

[65:39]they were very democratic in their approach so there's a different lead singer on every track

[65:43]on this album they didn't have one main front person so i have another question here and so

[65:48]like snoop dogg covers a ton of parliament funkadelic george clinton a ton of hip-hop

[65:55]like there is no hip-hop without funkadelic parliament without these groups right correct

[65:59]is the low voice on all those songs what do you say like well the dog that don't pee on

[66:04]trees is a bitch like is that george clinton or is that this ray davies guy i think i think that

[66:10]voice is entirely someone else i think that's not a sample i think that one but i don't know i think

[66:14]i could be wrong but uh but most i think most of those g funk samples came from 1974 or five or

[66:23]later i think they came from parliament funkadelic pull up there's a dog that is it can't you see me

[66:28]what's the tupac song play the beginning of this is this george clinton tell me who this is the

[66:34]line stairs of a million pairs of oh yeah that's george clinton looking hard but won't realize that

[66:38]they will never see the pee yeah yeah that's okay so i bet a lot of those are george clinton oh

[66:45]atomic dog here too right weird version of yeah all this stuff like this was this so funkadelic

[66:52]was never doing you know such straight ahead grooves like that they were they were always

[66:57]experimenting more with time and playing a lot or playing a lot looser than than parliament did

[67:04]you and your folks you and your folks me and my folks me and my folks and that it's not because

[67:11]i couldn't read it i did i knew it but um some say it's a sequel to the song before which would

[67:17]make sense because it sounds very similar and so then this is billy bass nelson singing lead right

[67:24]billy bass i think he was the bassist right to the river i don't know how they get this like

[67:33]flangey sound like this but i like it i mean doesn't it sound like a great production it

[67:41]sounds crystal clear you compare this to youtube last week oh man but what's funny is there's stuff

[67:47]where george clinton was saying oh i was it was more specifically on the title track but i think

[67:51]across the whole album where he was doing stuff in the studio and he was like the professional

[67:55]engineers had to get up and leave because they were like i don't want to be associated with the

[68:03]album and i don't want to be associated with the album and i don't want to be associated with the

[68:04]album and i don't want to be associated with the album and i don't want to be associated with the

[68:04]it's not in booze and vinyl but when's the right time to listen to the funkadelic when do you like

[68:08]listening to this album so that's a great question i this particular album i bought a vinyl reissue a

[68:14]couple of years ago and i've just finally now got that copy cleaned up enough that i'm i'll listen

[68:20]to the first track on that copy because it's the one thing that i would almost in the right

[68:27]situation stream over playing it on vinyl because that first track has to like i play it at night

[68:33]when everyone's asleep and there's no ambient noise in the house so if there's nothing else

[68:37]going on then i'll play it on vinyl but otherwise after maggot brain and before wars of armageddon

[68:43]you can play this anytime it's like it's fun music it's it's good jams i think it's good kitchen

[68:48]music it is good kitchen music i play in the kitchen all the time yeah so you're doing dishes

[68:53]i bet it kind of keeps you going moving forward right yeah super stupid i mean this is is this the

[69:03]is this the first true jam album we've done i know that almond brothers was kind of a jam but that was

[69:10]more blues like this is well i think they're really like this this particular track they're

[69:16]really pulling from jimmy hendrix and eddie hazel i think was really listening to his voice like he's

[69:21]doing jimmy yeah totally and then i love when he sings along with his guitar solo on this track so

[69:28]good is that what i have here

[69:33]uh no this is later in the album but just like more of the later in the song

[69:36]in the song this is a true story about how he went out looking hazel went out looking for

[69:40]cocaine and came back with heroin which is named skag now guys would you do a drug named skag

[69:49]i mean i that sounds bad to do skag like yeah i'm hooked on skag not great back in our minds

[69:56]this is what are the to be clear a better decision than eating the

[70:03]cheesecake right or the character 100 yeah we do the skag over the character 100

[70:07]i wanted to i wanted this clip in there because this is the only horn that we hear on the albums

[70:12]and eventually parliament went such in the direction of horns and that's the only time

[70:17]we hear that's when i think of you know george clinton right i think of like the 19 piece band

[70:22]with every horn imaginable and every you know percussion imagine you know right so and that's

[70:27]why i like this song i thought it was gonna be like flashlight and all those songs like that

[70:30]like i this is such a change for me when i put it on i was like

[70:33]oh this is like a grateful dead fish type band speaking of flashlight i i pulled this but since

[70:39]you brought it up rob do you say flashlight i can't help myself now flashlight actually do you

[70:46]know uh george was actually on the muppets muppets in space i believe that and they did the closing

[70:55]song i had it up here i think it's space light is a parody nice the song is called space flight

[71:03]with george clinton and pepe the king prawn yes yes the the closing credits of muppets in space has

[71:13]george clinton doing space flight with pepe the prawn yes yeah you can hear you know your legend

[71:20]in music if you are doing a song i think clinton never and he writes about in his book he never

[71:26]wanted to be a front man he wanted him he wanted to write songs he wanted to be a band leader he

[71:30]never wanted to be a front man and he didn't really have the voice to carry it and that's

[71:34]part of why funkadelic never hit bigger than it did that and they were doing so many drugs and

[71:38]just around russell i gotta disagree a little bit i don't think parody songs are that great

[71:42]all right wars of armageddon this is described as a we've we've definitely never gotten any

[71:48]comments or texts out of my never not once hours of my life no response okay i might as well i

[71:55]mean i might as well hope somebody texts me about me sleeping like for how much time i've put into

[71:59]it that didn't make any sense

[72:00]making that made more sense in my head before it came out guys uh listen

[72:04]russell tell me this is described as a freak out jam is this a freak out jam

[72:07]it's a psychedelic freakout

[72:12]here to make the noises like whoa guys i'm gonna have to go back and forth in the stereo

[72:21]drumming that miles heard that miles wanted tiki fullwood for it

[72:25]this sounds like santana to me or santana sounds like this

[72:30]you know well very much uh hendrix when he got with the band of gypsies too it sounds like that

[72:35]yeah no you're totally right and that's like clayton writes about that like he thought about

[72:40]jimmy a lot when jimmy hangs heavy over this whole album this is the album this is so funny here this

[72:48]is the power to the more to the power more to the people can you imagine that this is those

[72:55]are they're this this no you're using them like they're yours yeah and you wanted to buy the shirts

[72:59]that say that a dollar aaron has shirts that says that very suspicious uh listen let's get

[73:06]into the rating system and now it's time for everybody's favorite part of the show

[73:14]and very popular beck did it better rating system oh yeah okay guys this time when i say super freak

[73:25]out you need to go whoa and then i'm gonna have it go back and forth so i believe like we're having a

[73:29]super freakout okay listen this time this album okay is kind of like at 136 on the rolling stone

[73:36]we don't care about the album we only care about the list okay we want to see if the list is correct

[73:40]we're double checking rolling stone's work dr stone did you do the work today say hello to your

[73:46]wife sharon almost started that joke and forgot the name but pulled it out at the end yes another

[73:51]overtime victory for rob is this episode great it is like a super freak out it is like a super freak

[73:58]out that would mean that it should be higher on the list which is a lower number okay it should

[74:08]be at 130 129 etc okay you do the math folks okay i'm not come on or is this album uh a perfectly

[74:19]just normal freak out okay it's just your fine kind of freak out is rolling well it's perfect oh

[74:24]yeah or is this album freaking okay

[74:28]okay or is this album just playing out because i feel like it's inappropriate to say freak

[74:33]nowadays so i'm gonna say is this album just an out it's not that great it is a rolling groan

[74:38]it should be six four three on the list which of course is a higher number and we would get to it

[74:44]later okay aaron would have to wait even longer before he gets to his favorite little album

[74:48]uh what do you guys think 136 is this a good place for maggot brain

[74:52]rolling well-toned rolling bone or rolling groan russell what do you think you know what i really

[74:57]enjoyed the album the album is a good place for maggot brain the album is a good place for maggot brain

[74:58]album and at first i was a little i was kind of thinking this is going to be more funk kind of

[75:02]more like the more wawa type stuff we've heard from from that we've heard covered on a lot of

[75:07]uh snoop dogg or dr dre or kind of the west coast rap i thought i was going to kind of hear more of

[75:13]that noise and we didn't and i was thrown a little bit off regarding the 10-minute guitar solo at the

[75:18]very beginning i knew that was a big part of what these guys did i wasn't really expecting that so

[75:22]that threw me off a little bit but i kept having to come back to this was in 1971. yeah feels to me

[75:28]it's way before it's time based on what we've heard otherwise around then so i'm going to say

[75:33]for me i really enjoyed it i could see myself coming back and listening to the get this again

[75:37]i'm going to say it's rolling boned i think it should be a little higher on the list it's not

[75:40]like a top 10 or top 20 for me personally but it seems like it's super influential plus they've got

[75:45]the super low bass voice guy i'm all about that girl i'm so sorry i took your dessert and i'm

[75:52]so sorry i'm doing this bit again i'm desperate for a laugh i really don't see why it's that big of a deal

[75:58]i left you one of the other ones in the fridge it doesn't seem like it should be that big of a deal

[76:03]and i was expecting we could split that other one as well so please don't eat the whole thing

[76:08]uh technically that is what we did do with the other one this would rob so it sounds like you

[76:13]had 75 she had 25 much like somebody else i know all right rolling well-toned really boner rolling

[76:21]your own matt what do you think i think i'm gonna go rolling well-toned i think you brought it up uh

[76:28]at the beginning of the podcast rob and russell just brought it up again you know you think of it

[76:33]from 1971. um i think of other groups like the velvet underground which i didn't really like

[76:38]their album but then you remember that's from 1964. you know and it's just so far ahead of

[76:43]everything else and you know the beach boys and some of these other ones so i think you know it's

[76:48]not the george clinton that i think of but you kind of hear it again put it in the right context

[76:56]and i think it's

[76:57]super influential and fits in pretty good right around here so i'll just go with rolling

[77:03]well-toned all right unfortunately you guys are correct or incorrect the correct answer

[77:08]is he's skipping me all right sorry go ahead i don't even care rolling well-toned rolling boner

[77:16]rolling this is the 1971 album george clinton and funkadelic i am so happy that we got to

[77:22]listen to this album together i am so appreciative that you guys let me talk so much on this album

[77:27]i honestly think it's rolling well-toned i love this album i love how fucking loud it is and

[77:32]how hard it rocks i recognize that perhaps it wouldn't be everybody's cup of tea but i'm mostly

[77:37]just happy to listen to it with you guys so thank you why are you not saying it's rolling bone what

[77:42]what would make it better i think wars of armageddon is maybe a questionable inclusion um

[77:47]and uh do you have other parliament or funkadelic albums you would rank higher than this um no i don't think i would

[77:57]um i think this is the i think this is their best because i think it's the tightest i think

[78:01]some of the other funkadelic albums are a little even well they were just doing so many drugs like

[78:07]their first two albums are a little looser i think this is the tightest in terms of song selection and

[78:14]instrumentation um but i guess maybe for me i'd listen to like chocolate city or for the downstroke

[78:20]from parliament more often because it's sort of easier to listen to and those are the like those

[78:27]are the ones that i would like to listen to um but i don't know if that's something that i would like

[78:32]to listen to i would like to listen to but i would like to listen to that one um yeah i don't know

[78:36]if that's something that i would like to listen to i don't know if that's something that i would like

[78:39]to listen to but i don't know if that's something that i would like to listen to but i don't know if

[78:41]that's something that i would like to listen to but i don't know if that's something that i would like

[78:46]to listen to but i don't know if that's something that i would like to listen to but i don't know if

[78:49]that's something that i would like to listen to but i don't know if that's something that i would like

[78:51]to listen to but i don't know if that's something that i would like to listen to but i don't know if that's something

[78:52]no it doesn't matter if you're looking at somebody in a tent russell you're outside that's all that

[78:55]matters honey there's a bear out there and he's lying down because it takes too long when he

[79:04]stands up and his calves cramp up rob what you're raking we got it right this time right rosie got

[79:12]it right unfortunately you are incorrect guys this gets a rolling jam own all right this is the first

[79:18]real jam record we've listened to and i loved it i think it's just it's what a vibe put this on in

[79:24]a college dorm room okay you are definitely going to meet the guy who sells weed on campus so that

[79:29]is something to think about next up this is an amazing transition because we are going from an

[79:34]album that is drug addled to one that's just addled it's adele 21 we're doing adele wow dude

[79:45]we're doing adele

[79:48]but you're just too lazy to look it up online how long he can have his burger right how long

[79:54]would it take and then they get off track who are you talking about i've got the boyfriend

[80:01]get him with the now did it better he's probably jacked off outside i'll tell you that guys i'll

[80:09]tell you what what are you gonna tell us i got i got nothing i'm just gonna say super freak out

[80:17]again you guys got anything better well i i we might have to bleep it if i say it though

[80:22]the the other the other thing i was gonna say to the the dessert aficionado that i was with was

[80:28]did we really after we had all the like cake earlier in the day yeah that's gotta be edited

[80:35]started this song right right as he was talking guys what would it sound like if for macho man

[80:46]randy savage
