Radiohead: Kid A (2000) (...now in VR!)

Beck Did It Better Podcast 2000
About this episodeWe take big step into a different type of album. Where lyrics and melody don't matter! None of us are Radiohead fans but will this album win us over? Is it a Rolling Groan? Listen and find out! We get angry letter from Houston and find out who is God's gift to men! Matt talks parenting and that naturally leads to a conversation about Jackass. Russ talks airports and he and Matt try to decide who hates hanging by the pool more.  Rob makes a large miscalculation by talking VR and we finally get into the album about 50 minutes in and then we mostly talk Moog rings and ring modulators! We talk a

[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by

[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the

[00:09]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts and we promise to do almost no

[00:13]research all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it

[00:19]better we are all the way up to album 20 this is kid a by radiohead so guys i do have uh a lot of

[00:28]people don't know that they did come out with a uh they were going to release a separate version

[00:32]of creep for this album but it just they just changed a little bit so let's uh let's tune into

[00:37]our favorite radio station and listen to it i'm okay what's up everybody this is k-rob k-r-o-b

[00:50]about the fourth of july

[00:52]the format goes to

[00:58]the store

[00:59]his wife pulls him aside

[01:04]she says just getting dog

[01:09]so please don't buy

[01:14]those giant inflatables

[01:19]to put in the yard

[01:25]i like it well that's good because there's two minutes

[01:28]but matt doesn't listen

[01:30]because he's on a mission

[01:35]he's an inflatable freak

[01:40]he bought a giant wallow

[01:46]got a sander and some reindeer

[01:51]you'll put them out next year

[01:57]he goes after christmas

[02:02]he buys all he can afford

[02:06]but he's got a new problem

[02:12]not enough extension cords

[02:17]they're expensive

[02:18]they are

[02:19]matt wants you to notice

[02:23]when you're driving by

[02:26]you're not gonna miss it

[02:31]baby yoda blow up

[02:36]his wife wants to throw up

[02:41]he's an inflatable freak

[02:45]they're just getting longer and longer

[02:46]he's got a huge bad nose

[02:51]his wife says he's got a problem

[02:54]this is just gonna turn into like an hour long

[02:56]i think i'm rob's parody voice

[02:58]with every minute of time

[02:59]yeah

[03:01]he's running to the stars

[03:04]listen to this

[03:05]i'm hitting that note

[03:06]are you using a ring modulator for this?

[03:10]there is no voice

[03:11]there is no voice

[03:13]you held it that long?

[03:14]you held that note that long?

[03:15]yeah

[03:17]you had a steady better ass

[03:19]he's still with us

[03:21]to sleep

[03:23]home

[03:24]maybe like the beach?

[03:26]when you wanna hear about the greatest albums of all time

[03:32]but you're just too lazy to look it up online

[03:37]if you wanna hear four guys who chat

[03:41]and then they get off track

[03:43]i've got the perfect podcast for you jack

[03:48]beck did it better

[03:50]what oh geez quick cut off there

[03:52]did not get to hear the cymbal at the end

[03:54]uh guys

[03:55]they really

[03:56]i am shocked now

[03:59]who is our producer

[04:00]oh oh this is not good

[04:01]uh guys what's up

[04:03]i already understood more lyrics in that song

[04:06]than we're gonna understand on this whole album right

[04:08]welcome to beck did it better

[04:10]we are talking about album 20

[04:11]we're talking about all 500 albums

[04:13]okay let's let that sink in guys

[04:14]we're talking about 500 albums

[04:16]we're to number 20

[04:17]uh we are talking about all top 500 albums

[04:20]on the rolling stones top 500 album list

[04:22]this week we are talking about radiohead kid a

[04:25]actually i read something about radiohead kid a

[04:25]i read something where they named this album

[04:27]when tom york went up to visit canada

[04:29]and he told some canadians that the album

[04:31]instead of guitars and stuff

[04:33]like they had an okay computer

[04:34]he's like this album is just synths and keyboards

[04:37]and they but he but i don't know what to name it

[04:40]uh and the canadians go

[04:43]oh wow that's crazy

[04:45]surely you kid a

[04:46]and tom york was like

[04:48]it was a very long setup

[04:50]i could see it coming for a while

[04:52]kid a

[04:53]okay well thanks aaron

[04:55]and thank you for that bounce

[04:57]we bounce it back and forth

[04:58]this is what we do

[04:59]so uh we've got let me introduce everybody

[05:02]we've got russell

[05:03]like pre pre uh talking about these jokes

[05:08]before no no no

[05:10]i was gonna make a joke about giving him enough rope

[05:12]but we agreed not to touch that subject

[05:14]is that i do have all these jokes written out on the screen

[05:20]and that one was humiliated

[05:21]that i think everyone could read it

[05:22]because i share my screen

[05:23]i know they're reading and just being like

[05:25]oh you idiot

[05:25]uh surely you kid a

[05:28]uh so here's the thing

[05:29]here's the thing

[05:31]we've got russ in minnesota

[05:33]how are you doing russ

[05:34]we're not scare mongering

[05:36]this podcast is really happening

[05:38]we got aaron out in oaktown

[05:39]aaron how are you doing

[05:40]i'm great i'm excited to be here

[05:42]and talk about radiohead

[05:43]matt in minneapolis

[05:45]how are you doing matt

[05:46]excellent rob thanks for having me

[05:48]i am in new york and i am rob

[05:50]and i'm the main host

[05:51]all right let's go straight to the voicemail

[05:54]we've got another bex to the bex line

[05:58]we have a text

[05:59]it's a it's a it's a repeat customer

[06:01]we'll just say it that way

[06:02]i am sorry mr a

[06:04]here on your avocado toast eating

[06:06]herb loving

[06:06]everyone's equal ass wouldn't last a minute in houston

[06:09]we are beef eating

[06:11]gunslinging

[06:12]jacked up gas guzzling

[06:13]ford truck son of a guns here

[06:14]nice try sunshine

[06:16]great show howard rob

[06:18]russ dating updates

[06:19]speak up cranky matt

[06:21]okay so aaron you have pissed off

[06:22]all right so first of all

[06:24]wow

[06:24]i am the one who calls our listeners rightly

[06:27]total idiots

[06:28]okay i think aaron said one thing about houston

[06:30]i'm not even sure it was negative

[06:32]and aaron is the one who gets the negative feedback

[06:34]so this this plan is going perfectly so far

[06:36]i mean the ironic thing

[06:38]i just want to share with with this listener

[06:40]that i ate both avocado toast and beef shanks today

[06:44]so i don't know what i i mean

[06:45]i would happily welcome this person to my home

[06:48]and and share all that northern california

[06:51]has to offer with him or her

[06:53]i do have to point out that

[06:54]what this redneck said was

[06:55]one of the insults he threw in

[06:56]and i'm assuming it's a he

[06:57]uh one of the insults he threw in was

[07:00]uh aaron's everyone

[07:02]everyone's equal ass

[07:04]so like that's his insult is like

[07:06]oh he thinks everybody's equal

[07:07]what a sucker

[07:08]okay i don't want to stereotype but

[07:12]it is just a number

[07:13]i don't know i don't know who this person is

[07:15]but please come visit me anytime

[07:17]not this isn't a meet me in temecula situation either

[07:19]this is uh let's hang out

[07:21]come out and play some beef shanks together

[07:23]and then we'll see you next time

[07:23]and then we'll see you next time

[07:23]and then we'll see you next time

[07:23]and then we'll see you next time

[07:23]and then we'll see you next time

[07:23]and then we'll see you next time

[07:23]and then you're gonna kick his ass

[07:25]yeah that's a good job aaron

[07:26]aaron didn't you used to own a ford truck

[07:29]weren't you a ford truck son of a gun back in the day

[07:31]didn't you have a pickup truck at one point

[07:32]yeah i've owned both a ford ranger and a chevy s10

[07:35]thank you russell for coming to my defense

[07:37]i've had i've owned two pickups in my lifetime

[07:39]yeah oh but this guy's yeah this guy's not gonna count

[07:42]either of those trucks as pickup trucks

[07:45]neither guy who's owned who's owned two rangers

[07:48]and three isuzu trucks in my life

[07:50]like they're not trucks

[07:51]they're just little tonka toys

[07:53]i would argue that aaron is by far the biggest hick of the four of us

[07:57]like it's not even close right

[07:59]that's true

[08:00]i mean it's true

[08:01]like yeah he loves avocado toast

[08:03]but that's because he grew up going to the bathroom

[08:05]around an outhouse i assume

[08:06]and by the way you can tell i'm a professional announcer

[08:10]because i said out in the outhouse

[08:12]yeah that's not idiot rob

[08:14]i mean what guys we go in an outhouse

[08:17]we go out the in-house

[08:17]okay i didn't think about that joke to the end

[08:20]but the beginning was good

[08:21]there's a setup there

[08:22]all right

[08:23]got rolling going

[08:25]let's do we do we want to make fun of that caller anymore

[08:27]is it the same one who questioned our our factual accuracy

[08:31]or is that a different no

[08:32]and actually i gotta reach out to greg uh music greg 76 or whatever

[08:36]i actually follow him on instagram now

[08:37]he's a really great follow

[08:38]like he had really insightful stuff to say about the christmas albums

[08:41]i'm sure he's not listening anymore

[08:43]because that kanye episode has come out

[08:44]but uh like he has and you know what his favorite christmas song was

[08:49]was the uh the charlie brown linus and lucy one that you brought up

[08:52]so i was like uh

[08:53]i was like what the heck we we should be on the same page

[08:56]so don't fucking criticize that that's it

[08:59]i'll give you one pass

[09:00]you better shut the fuck up about our factual inaccuracies

[09:02]because there are none son

[09:04]suck it down magic mark

[09:06]all right so here's the deal

[09:09]i also want to say this

[09:10]we have uh trying to been acting like we are talking about the day when the podcast comes out

[09:15]so for example our christmas episode we were like oh it's christmas

[09:17]we are recording this between christmas and new year's

[09:20]i am no longer trying to think about when this podcast comes out

[09:22]i will be talking like i'm not going to be talking about the day when the podcast comes out

[09:23]i will be talking like i'm not going to be talking about the day when the podcast comes out

[09:23]i will be talking like i'm not going to be talking about the day when the podcast comes out

[09:23]like it's december 27th

[09:26]because it is okay

[09:27]so if you're listening to the podcast

[09:29]boohoo you're not part of the podcast

[09:30]do not confuse me

[09:31]i'm too confused to think about anything

[09:33]so right now it's december 27th

[09:35]i sound really dumb when i say about how confused i am

[09:38]i don't like when rob limits his swear words

[09:39]this would he when he would typically tell all of our listeners to f off

[09:43]and now he's like pulling back on his language

[09:45]i don't know if i like that

[09:45]i am trying to swear uh casually less okay

[09:48]um why

[09:50]and by the way

[09:50]why

[09:51]i pick you know what it is

[09:53]i picture i have an aunt

[09:55]who if she heard me swearing would not be happy

[09:57]there is a zero percent chance that aunt is listening to this podcast

[10:00]she will never listen to this podcast

[10:02]ever

[10:03]i don't know why i'm concerned about it at all

[10:05]but it's all i think about when i'm editing this dumb thing

[10:07]less likely to be listening than your mother-in-law

[10:10]yeah i was gonna say how does bernie feel about it

[10:12]bernie loves me

[10:13]bernie thinks i'm god's gift to men because i am

[10:15]okay

[10:16]what about women

[10:23]that's more mixed results

[10:26]i've got mixed results from them

[10:28]listen to that erin slam

[10:30]erin's gonna play better in houston this week

[10:32]first he's got any trucks

[10:33]now he's slamming people

[10:35]this is gonna be

[10:36]rob is a new sheriff in town

[10:39]there's a new sheriff in town

[10:41]his name is erin

[10:41]you guys are trying to wreck my confidence

[10:44]but it won't work

[10:45]okay

[10:46]it hasn't happened in 40 years

[10:48]and it won't happen now

[10:48]all right let's get into rolling going

[10:51]erin you better not say that

[10:53]you better not fucking make fun of me anymore

[10:54]the audience can hear you right now

[10:55]but i'm telling you

[10:56]that was not casual

[10:59]that was business

[11:00]i'm the main host

[11:05]stop making fun of me

[11:06]note to self edit all that out

[11:08]although the crowd does seem to like it

[11:10]they're hopping on board with yelling at erin

[11:12]people enjoy that

[11:13]all right let's get into rolling going

[11:15]rolling going how's it going rosie how's it going with you

[11:17]oh it's good yeah it's good it's december 27th

[11:20]it was 55 and sunny today so we got

[11:23]out to the park and ran around that was nice

[11:25]uh so you don't have to say the date okay that's not what i meant

[11:28]i don't want to be confused with the release date

[11:32]like we don't have to forget the date and the time

[11:34]i love how erin's quoting the temperature and everything too

[11:36]just so people in case they in case magic mark goes back in checks

[11:39]he's gonna be like actually erin was factually incorrect

[11:42]about the dew point in the oakland area on the 27th of december

[11:46]man don't get me started about the dew point

[11:48]i've really learned a lot about that in the last year and a half

[11:51]the dew point is a fascinating thing to do

[11:52]fascinating topic that also just proves that you're the biggest

[11:55]tick on the whole thing too because nobody talks about weather

[11:58]more than small town america that's like how you introduce yourselves like hey oh

[12:03]yeah it looks like storms coming in uh you know so

[12:05]that's how we know that rosie's the biggest tick on this whole

[12:08]yeah when you're talking to people in new york it's like dew point more like

[12:11]don't point don't bring it up they don't want to talk about

[12:13]and i would say the thing i'm really into uh the last three days

[12:19]is um this uh i realized that my

[12:22]what i've got going on dovetails with a couple of russell's interests

[12:26]i'm reading uh as a christmas gift for my lady i'm reading

[12:30]a biography about james beard the uh the guy

[12:35]after whom james beard awards were were named it's by john birdsall who was

[12:38]formerly of oakland uh great book i'm really liking it and

[12:41]i know russell likes to read back can you explain who james beard is for

[12:44]dumb listeners yeah so i'm just learning about who he

[12:48]was in his life but um he is he is a person

[12:52]after whom uh culinary awards are named and i think he was a

[12:56]uh food journalist and now is that like a really dirty word aaron just used

[13:01]i kind of flinched i didn't flinch when he said that culinary

[13:04]okay oh i don't like that anymore

[13:09]but i think he grew up near portland and then uh it was a food i think he was a

[13:13]chef at some point and then a food okay well we don't need this isn't the

[13:16]audiobook version of the book i mean we and what i but my real big realization

[13:20]that russell you probably have learned this through all of your about your

[13:22]biography reading is that i so i keep most of my reading fiction

[13:26]especially in 2020 because real life is too real for me but i'm understanding

[13:31]now that biographers also have to be something like novelists and to make a

[13:35]biography interesting they have to write it as though they have to fill in the

[13:38]gray areas and so i'm really enjoying uh discovering that learning that fact uh

[13:44]after 40 years of life so um not not the most brilliant uh insight but it's a

[13:48]it's a fun read so i highly recommend uh matt we're only going

[13:52]how's it going with you uh good it's december 27th here in

[13:55]minneapolis

[13:58]so it finally snowed on december 24th that's three days ago and so

[14:04]we've uh we've been out sledding every day and i well

[14:08]i'm trying to figure out if if it was just me in the old days or

[14:17]did you guys go to the sledding hill by yourself i mean there's a kid like is it

[14:20]eight nine ten year old did your parents come with you

[14:22]no we went by ourselves i know just what you're gonna say and i'll let you say it

[14:25]halfway before i interrupt you okay well yeah that's about par for the

[14:30]course thank you i feel like i'm getting better

[14:32]yeah so you know so i go don't let me stop you go ahead they got my eight

[14:36]year old and i got a five-year-old and i think we're fine there but like you

[14:39]start seeing i don't know 10 11 12 year olds and their parents are there

[14:44]and it's like a social event now for the parents to like get all dressed up and

[14:47]bring their coffee and you know maybe in copenhagen spice lattes you know everybody's out

[14:52]side and everything so that's that's kind of a you're thinking about it in minnesota but i don't

[14:57]know it's just it it seems like i mean this is a back in the day take that i wish our kids could go

[15:05]do more stuff on their own without having to be hovering over them all the time i don't know

[15:11]that is i that is the none of us if look at our faces

[15:17]none of us are shocked that you have that take absolutely none yeah but i don't know i mean

[15:22]do am i rosie you've got a little bit younger i mean it yeah mine's three and a half i mean i

[15:28]so yeah i don't want to turn this into a parenting podcast but i did even today on the playground

[15:33]realize like oh i need to step back a little bit away like you know the i i i've been the parent

[15:38]who's following the kid around across the little wobbly bridge on the you know play structure and

[15:42]i realized today like well you know if he falls he's he's okay i better just step back a little

[15:47]bit so yeah and then as soon as you do that the kid like gets seriously hurt that's what happened

[15:52]every time i'm like yeah and aren't you the parent where your kid made like two trips to

[15:56]the emergency room under your care in like a week or something like yeah that also is true so i do

[16:00]have that hanging over my head yeah russell maybe you shouldn't feel bad i feel bad i said that i

[16:05]take that you shouldn't be pushing the wobbly the wobbly bridge while he's on top of it maybe that's

[16:09]the problem russell get tough fucker you're yelling damn it it's a tough it's a tough line

[16:14]to walk right we're always trying to walk that line uh i i tell you i it snowed here in new york

[16:20]like major snow and

[16:22]so we have an inflatable tube right and we went to central park we went to the big sledding hill

[16:27]in central park i took the girls and nobody else in new york knows how to sled nobody has any idea

[16:32]people are walking up the hill down where you sled people are looking down the hill and getting

[16:36]just blasted from behind like people in new york are fucking idiots when i came to sledding and i

[16:41]said to my girls like these people are fucking idiots don't trust them they're here like they're

[16:45]like not wearing gloves it's just wild to me what people in new york do for sledding so i brought a

[16:52]bunch of kids to sled the hill and i was like oh my god i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going

[16:55]to sled the hill i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going to

[16:56]sled the hill i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going to sled

[16:57]the hill i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going to sled the hill i'm not going to sled the hill

[16:58]because it goes so fast so i put my girls together on a tube i put them together on a tube

[17:03]they went down and they went so much farther than the other kids that they immediately hit a metal

[17:08]fence and bounced over at my youngest one got pretty seriously hurt so here i am in central park

[17:13]with a crying child after i sent them down on a tube that i knew was too fast so ironically it

[17:21]turns out the shittiest parent of all was the parent inside it was me we used to when we were

[17:27]kids we used to go down a hill on the other side of the street it was kind of a hill that went down

[17:32]we would we would create a jump at the bottom of it and you would go off the jump and kind of onto

[17:35]like a frozen pond yeah but we turned this into like a full contact sport of course where we would

[17:42]have races to the bottom where you were allowed to get off the get off the sled and like tackle

[17:46]people off the sleds and it was essentially like a wrestling match to the bottom of the ice yeah

[17:51]the concussion special that's what we would call that like if aaron showed up at a sledding thing

[17:55]and his son was that would be put there would be that would be put to an end immediately and that

[17:59]was the thing is that there was one jump on this thing and it was like a rock that went out right

[18:03]and literally parents were gathered at the bottom and some kid bonked their head and i bet 10 parents

[18:10]went down and were like oh no oh no and like all the kids were like move i was like yes the kids

[18:15]are right get that kid move his ass he's standing up and they're making him like okay put your hands

[18:19]above your head do this to that i'm like he's in a snowsuit he can't move very well anyway like

[18:24]and the kid was the kid was like 11 and not let hurt and i was like just move on and i i do think

[18:30]it's i'm not saying like oh parents these days you know i'm not saying like oh every kid should

[18:34]be smoking cigarettes eating red meat but it's like okay they're sledding they're gonna get hurt

[18:38]there's a hundred percent chance they're gonna get hurt that's it okay i think you know and to

[18:42]the best thing somebody told me when my now eight-year-old was in the two three stage was like

[18:49]just don't

[18:49]react right like you're there if he's bleeding you know you got to fix it but like as soon as

[18:55]you run up and react is oh my god are you okay that's like the worst thing that could happen

[18:59]like you got to let him just kind of shake it off and so i don't know we're it's hard it's hard

[19:04]because they are your kids and you just hate him so much hurt so what was the best that's not what

[19:10]you're saying what was the best sled run that either of them had what was the best or longest

[19:13]one that i've either of them had it was honestly that first one where it hit the fence i've never

[19:17]been so i was asking matt around jesus this is still matt's

[19:19]because i told him i was like if you're gonna run into something get off and the older one

[19:23]failed immediately and the younger one just hit this fence and i went down there you know what i

[19:27]told the younger one i said i told you to get off the tube like what is your problem she's like ah

[19:32]my head hurts or like my finger's bending the wrong way and i was like i told you get off the

[19:36]tube why would you stay on but i did film it in a jackass style video i'll show it to you guys

[19:41]sometime so i did get some play out of that that was good matt uh what was the best sled run your

[19:46]kids went on later on your kids did you like

[19:49]walk into when they were sleeping and like throw a bunch of baking powder on their face like they

[19:53]used to do on that yeah and i set off a bunch of fireworks and stuff like that it's a reverse uncle

[19:57]phil where i pick on kids what is the best jackass skit that you guys remember number one hands down

[20:03]hands down for me number one with a bullet for me is and i watched it recently it wasn't as funny

[20:08]but to me to me there's two the the funniest looking one is the one where the roller skating

[20:13]in the truck and the truck is driving around and i use that when i teach newton's third law

[20:17]i use that as an example i show that clip and i'm like

[20:19]yeah it's newton's third law i'm not a good teacher okay the kids did not do well on that test

[20:24]uh but then my other favorite one is the rodeo with the uh fire hose and it's not it doesn't

[20:31]it's not visually funny but the idea of it that somebody would come up with it and they do my

[20:35]favorite jackass thing which is that they wear the clothes that are appropriate so they're like in a

[20:39]cowboy outfit you know that's my favorite part but they're like assless chaps right yeah yeah yeah

[20:43]but that's my favorite part is that they dress so perfectly like if you watch that one i think it

[20:49]like oh there's a note on the door and so you got to go real close up to the door like oh yes so the

[20:54]big fist goes boom i think about that all the time you guys know your jackass i'm impressed i've

[21:02]actually been really into this kind of other this other practical joke it's like a youtube video

[21:06]it's these two guys over in england i forgot their names this is the other thing you subscribe to

[21:10]beside me and my wife right yeah yeah i've now canceled my facebook because the only updates

[21:14]they got were uk practical jokes and rob and jenny's weightlifting so i've been doing that for

[21:19]so i know i've terminated it the practical jokers made their kid fly off a sled and hit a fence oh

[21:23]wait no that was rob so one of these practical jokes that is just i've died laughing watching

[21:27]this is these guys essentially do this prank where they're gonna have one guy catch marshmallows so

[21:33]they're gonna throw a marshmallow up into the air and he's gotta catch it with his teeth oh no and

[21:36]so he does like five or six of them he can't get it he can't get it and he's gonna give him a hundred

[21:40]bucks for every one he gets every one he catches so he gives him like four or five he finally

[21:44]catches one and the guy's pumped he's jumping around he's like yes he takes the money he's

[21:49]cocking off and so they do the next one and he throws a like an egg like an uncooked egg and he

[21:54]catches this egg in his mouth and just starts gagging and vomiting all over it is so funny

[21:59]i thought you were gonna say he throws a golf ball you know like knocks out all of his teeth

[22:06]no no it's an egg no you know what i watched man i watched all the um jackass videos with my girls

[22:12]and they think it's the funniest thing and there were a lot i had to fast forward like the one

[22:17]where he starts peeing into a snow cone i was like we're not watching this we do that or like where

[22:21]he puts a firecracker up his dick hole i was like okay we can fast forward i didn't like when they

[22:25]would do the physical stuff like remember didn't he didn't the one guy put a fish hook through his

[22:29]mouth and like swim behind a boat like i don't like that fast forward the paper cut one i still

[22:33]fast forward that one i was like we're not watching that but i did show my girls the one

[22:36]where they stick their penis but is this a is this the podcast now should we just watch jackass

[22:40]where they stick their penis with a snake costume on it or with a mouse costume on it into a

[22:47]uh snake cage and they move it up and down until the snake bites into the penis you have never seen

[22:53]my daughter laugh so hard and i'm so excited because they are now filming jackass 4 and i'm

[22:58]going to be there opening night in the theater with my kids watching it okay so good parenting

[23:04]that's the name of this podcast good parenting advice from rob thank you very much that's all

[23:09]definitely very nice of matt for him to use his role and going to bring up uh people putting

[23:14]their penises into a

[23:17]rodent costume and putting them into a snake cage matt i appreciate you bringing that up yeah no

[23:21]problem no problem that that new mic's working out real well for you yeah thanks speaking of

[23:25]sticking their into things russ uh rolling going how's it going with you

[23:28]i'm gonna edit all this out

[23:37]i'm gonna get an angry email from russ

[23:43]must delete

[23:47]uh i'll save it though here i am red and i the reason i'm red right now is because i got a little

[23:52]sunburn this weekend it's december 27th which means when i went to i decided i had to get out

[23:57]of minneapolis i was tired of being stuck in having nowhere to go so i made the decision my

[24:02]family had canceled all of our holiday events so we weren't going to people's houses we did a zoom

[24:06]holiday but like i need to get out of here so i decided i'm gonna go to fort lauderdale for a few

[24:10]days just went by myself all of us with families are just like immediately depressed so i wanted to

[24:16]leave so i bought a plane ticket to fort lauderdale and you know my child's bedroom i don't know if

[24:21]it's the right thing to be doing traveling right now you probably shouldn't be doing that but i

[24:25]figure i'm coming home i'm gonna be home at my house by myself afterwards and whatnot so i just

[24:30]decided to do it but i thought this is a different trip right because you were trying to get a virus

[24:33]on this trip yes yeah that's your original uh i can't bring it up yes but so i thought i would

[24:44]share some of my travel experiences with you and see what you guys think about some of these things

[24:48]let's hear it so the first one i noticed this in the airport

[24:53]sting there was so you realize like most airports all have hand dryers they don't have towels they

[25:03]only have hand dryers and i noticed this in a bathroom in a restroom in in fort lauderdale

[25:08]they only had the hand dryers the air dryers and maybe people like aaron and his wife who want to

[25:14]no use paper don't use any products like the hand dryers i can't stand hand dryers in public

[25:20]bathrooms like what is worse than like having to stand in a bathroom for like 30 40 seconds and

[25:26]your hands still aren't dry and you've got your stuff all over everywhere you've got to like wipe

[25:30]your hands on your jeans as you're walking out because you don't want people to think you pissed

[25:34]on yourself i just i hate public air dryers for public bathrooms what do you guys think well i

[25:40]will say i want to i want to bring it up again sometimes you do the reverse you do the reverse

[25:44]where you accidentally pee yourself and then you have to go wash your hands and wipe on your

[25:47]pants to make it look like you didn't pee yourself we will be talking about miles davis

[25:51]we'll be talking about that joke again i think they've shut down a lot of the hand dryers because

[25:58]they're actually not that sanitary they're as matt said they're not sanitary i think they take

[26:02]up more energy i think it takes more energy to have those things blowing everywhere than it does

[26:07]for the five or six inches of paper that you used or whatever plus i will say without air dryers like

[26:13]in the air dryers they're not sanitary they're not sanitary they're not sanitary they're not sanitary

[26:14]in the um i used to go to a gym here in new york that had air dryers in the locker room there would

[26:17]be a less chance of a guy pointing the air dryer up and then drying his nuts on it in front of

[26:22]everybody because there was a 100 chance at this gym that i would see that when i went in that is

[26:28]like the old dude at the gym move isn't it the old guy with the air dryer have you ever seen those

[26:33]people when they skydive and you see their face and it's like flopping up and down because that's

[26:36]what it looked like but bigger it was somehow the parachute it was the size of a parachute that air

[26:42]would hit it it would just go

[26:43]you

[26:44]guy took off you hit the ceiling so so air dryers i kind of experienced oh that's right

[26:49]but one of the things i was gonna ask you guys so i was down there and i'm not really

[26:55]typically like a you know hot place vacation i would rather go see history i'd rather go

[27:00]see a ball game or something like that i'm really not one to just go sit on the beach but

[27:03]it's like i'm gonna do this but i'm not a pool guy either i'm not built to go lay by the pool

[27:09]by a bunch of attractive looking people that are in super good shape laying by the pool

[27:14]i don't really want to lay out the sun because i'm gonna get sunburnt way too bad like so i went

[27:18]to the pool and i sat there and there's literally all these people sitting over in the sun and i'm

[27:22]the one guy who's like sitting by myself over in the shade because i didn't want to be by other

[27:26]people i didn't want to get sunburned and i realized like i'm i'm a pool unicorn i'm the

[27:32]guy who goes and takes the shaded chair in the pool but there's so much like pool etiquette like

[27:36]people are are whenever they see like someone get up and leave a better spot a better chair people

[27:42]are like up running through the pool and they're like oh my god i'm gonna get sunburnt and i'm gonna

[27:44]take chairs and i was just like overwhelmed by this so what's your guy's pool style when you're

[27:48]when you're at a resort or you're at a hotel no holds barred baby whatever i can do to get the

[27:54]best chairs i want it but i will say this i don't like a chair close to the pool i like to back up

[27:58]so i'm not going to get wet and i also look around for people that i don't think are going to talk

[28:03]on their phone that's my number one thing i look for for where i'm going to go i don't want to be

[28:06]next to some person you know jabbering on their phone while i'm trying to sit there and ignore my

[28:13]right because i forgot to bring a book so i have my phone and i can't see it in the sun i don't have

[28:18]time to listen to people jab so that's what i do by the pool the last time i was at a pool at a

[28:22]resort we were in maui in march of 2020 right before everything shut down you didn't skip the

[28:28]pool so you could record the podcast while your wife and kid went that was pre-podcast in the

[28:32]pre-podcast days i was gonna say aaron did tell us earlier that he did get a discount because he

[28:36]went right at the height of the pandemic so very smart but again the nice thing about having a

[28:43]three-year-old is that you can't go to the pool and you can't go to the pool and you can't go to

[28:43]was that we were at the pool by you know 8 a.m especially on hawaii time so we were there by 8

[28:49]a.m there's nobody around it was great i know you're there earlier than eight when i fly with

[28:53]the kids when they were younger i was up at like 4 30 yeah 4 30 pretty much i was out there and

[28:58]they were like yeah they were setting up like an outdoor market it was just me and this kid

[29:01]in a stroller and i was like this is a nightmare that's how it works yeah so that we lucked out

[29:05]then you're like by the time he's ready to eat lunch at 10 a.m that's when the pool's getting

[29:09]busy so i missed all i missed the whole pool culture last time i was there matt would you

[29:13]i i can't stand sitting around by i mean no i mean i'm with you i'd rather go walk and go see

[29:22]what's going on or go up and down the beach or i don't know i mean trying to relax by a pool it's

[29:27]just with rob's take you know somebody's on their phone you got like four chicks next to you who are

[29:33]not very good looking and they're wearing the worst not enough clothes clothing they're all

[29:38]good looking if you have enough of those those those cocktail drinks that they give you a little

[29:43]you know then yeah or if you're just trying to hang out with like you know some of your buddies

[29:47]or something or your wife and some friends and then somebody's always wedging their way in there

[29:51]to try hey where are you guys from it's like i don't want to fucking talk oh man like public

[29:55]pool talkers are the worst yeah so so i try to do everything i can to not put myself in those

[30:02]situations russell and uh you know sarah and her friends can go hang out by the pool i'll come

[30:06]i'll just go gamble in vegas or something instead so you mentioned talking to people at the pool

[30:13]obviously this is kind of you know we're at a different time right now people don't really want

[30:17]strangers coming up and being close to them but like if you were a single guy would you would you

[30:21]take a chance of talking to a woman at a pool or are you immediately like flagged as the creep if

[30:27]you will yes do that yes the answer is yes if it was an opportunity to talk to a woman when i was

[30:33]single the answer is always yes now in real life of course i wouldn't i would like cry i think it

[30:38]probably really depends i think it depends i think if you're a super attractive guy you can talk to

[30:42]someone at the pool i don't think that's true i don't think that's true i don't think that's true

[30:43]that's what i think if if you're under like the 41 percentile i think you're a creep if you talk

[30:48]to someone i i don't know i think i don't i think you could be i don't i don't you could be the best

[30:55]looking dude in the world if you're there by yourself nice talking to or trying to pick up

[31:00]people there's something it's like you know what's going on here either hey it's pandemic

[31:05]time i'm just taking time off great you know let's talk about it but like if you're the best

[31:09]looking dude in the world and you're just there like roaming around i don't know i think you're

[31:13]that puts up red flags i don't think i don't think it's it's a it's not a it's not a given

[31:19]that you know like you can just go do that if you're a good looking dude i don't know

[31:23]that's just i will say a good looking dude in a hotel by himself at the pool is that is a red flag

[31:29]big time yeah does it make it even weirder if they're there on christmas i just realized

[31:34]the worst part about that is like that story was spot on except for i'm not a good looking dude so

[31:41]really the story is like ugly dude i'm not a good looking dude i'm not a good looking dude

[31:43]at we just need to move on like three levels i'm gonna have to take another vacation after this

[31:50]podcast i mean i don't know yeah i'm not really like the person to answer this question but

[31:55]you know i think in that situation you have to really be prepared to talk about something

[32:00]interesting like you have to have a real good reason to talk to somebody like so you've got

[32:04]to like you can't right you gotta have like a podcast to talk about you need to be able to

[32:09]talk about kid a like you got to really bring some game like you can't just say

[32:13]oh hey what are you drinking a drink with a umbrella like that's not gonna work you know

[32:18]in five seconds aaron i'm a woman at the pool you're trying to pick up on me

[32:21]five four three two one hey what are you drinking and drinking

[32:25]but like russell aaron my eyes are up here okay were you the one walking you like walking from

[32:33]group to group or were you like hanging out in the hot tub and i didn't go talk to anyone i didn't

[32:38]go talk to anyone i went and sat in the shade with not within 50 feet of anyone and i listened to kid

[32:43]headphones i mean that's the thing i think i think you gotta like if you're in the pool

[32:47]or you're in the hot tub i mean people are coming there you know then hey then you could talk about

[32:51]it but like if you're going you're moving oh they're not gonna go no no that was not me yeah

[32:56]that's absolutely not that was not me and you're bringing your chair with you russell's gonna keep

[33:01]it chill lay back and rob's gonna edit all this out to make me look like the creep though this

[33:05]is terrible what i would never do that i need to do it people think i'm the creep rob roland going

[33:12]how's it going with you we got to hear from you in the chat

[33:13]i'll tell you what i got a vr headset for uh the holidays and it rocks it is better than real life

[33:20]my wife keeps wanting me to do real things and it's when did you get this for your birthday no

[33:24]for the holidays you got this you said you didn't get enough gifts what the fuck are you talking

[33:30]about you just said you didn't get any gifts no from jenny that was for my parents 40 years old

[33:36]baby getting presents from my parents like she would buy me a vr headset give me a break okay so

[33:42]i i gotta i gotta ask you a question

[33:43]like i think of rob and i think of a vr headset i have no idea what you're gonna say next right

[33:50]instantly what was the first thing you downloaded is your mom listening rob second yeah it was

[33:58]bernie i did i it was wild because nobody can see what you're looking at in the vr headphones

[34:06]so i'm like with my family they're opening up gifts and i'm like v r p o r search

[34:13]uh it's pretty good rob's what are you doing what are you what's dad doing over there in the

[34:22]corner i'm like turning knobs with my hands that's the joke

[34:28]this old transistor tv is amazing

[34:33]i gotta get this channel on k-rob i gotta turn the knob you get it to

[34:40]turns out people around you though can't hear the sound i didn't think of that there were a

[34:43]lot of speakers so no so okay i i did not think you guys are gonna bring that up i thought i would

[34:51]get at least two sentences in before somebody brought that up to be honest but i will say this

[34:56]is the main host of this show you should know that we're gonna bring the main host right

[35:02]so i did want to say i did watch the vikings game in it

[35:12]and then i did watch the vikings game in it and then i did watch the vikings game in it and then

[35:13]like i was sitting in like outer space and then on a big screen the vikings were playing so i

[35:17]watched that that was super depressing not good um and then and then but the coolest thing was

[35:24]there's some really cool games and there's some fun stuff on there and you know whatever it's

[35:27]the games are not like regular video game level games like if you bought it on a switch or

[35:33]whatever you'd be really pissed but to be able to look around there's some really really cool

[35:37]and if you guys want i do stream to facebook now because you can just push a button and play your

[35:41]video game on facebook so i do that all the time

[35:43]and i have a game where i just try to shoot guys in the nuts all the time i'm always going oh here's

[35:47]a shot to the nuts so i am making content without you guys just to let you know so if getting shot

[35:52]in the nuts takes off i will be seeing you guys later i do need to play vr but on sunday kid

[35:59]cuddy actually did a vr concert for oculus um rift owners i have an oculus quest too but for

[36:06]the oculus owners and basically what it was is you walked into the stadium and you're sitting

[36:10]next to like 20 other avatars that were moving in and out of the stadium and you're sitting next to

[36:13]them and dancing and you could listen to them if you wanted or and and then kid cuddy was doing a

[36:19]concert in the front and he was kind of he wasn't on a screen you could see him move around but i

[36:24]wouldn't say he was 3d and i gotta say the camera they used was not the highest resolution but

[36:28]he was on the moon promoting his man on the moon three hours world problems here and there were

[36:33]like lasers going off and like vr wasn't good enough but you could look around and see all

[36:38]these people so basically and you could move your arms with the controllers so i was standing in my

[36:43]at about 10 o'clock at night watching a kid cuddy concert and dancing like this arms up arm i was

[36:49]doing like and it was so fun i think your wife i think your wife put it on instagram anybody wants

[36:53]it was really cool because it's everything i like about concerts right which is like showing other

[37:01]people my dance moves listening to music and then kind of like seeing other people dance but i could

[37:07]cut out all the bad stuff about concerts like a guy next to me started singing so guess what i did

[37:11]i muted his ass i went

[37:13]mute him he doesn't know couldn't hear him it was awesome like and it was just it was just great like

[37:18]i i didn't have to drive anywhere to go to the concert i love it now there's also never have to

[37:24]leave your apartment ever there's also a ping pong table game and i did try to lean on the ping pong

[37:27]table and fell so that's part of the story but we're not going to go into that so did you have

[37:32]to did you have to unplug it really quick when you were at the concert you jenny caught you like

[37:35]staring at a woman in the different section or anything or what'd you do no they can't tell what

[37:40]i'm looking at oh she was like why are you turning that big radio you love that big radio

[37:43]game you think it's so fun rob are you playing that k-rob game again oh rob you're all the kids

[37:50]are at home opening that cash register who knows if there's other people and other and other i did

[37:54]in your building that are playing k-rob game at the same time now you guys don't seem to get any

[37:58]of my texts because you don't ever respond to them but i did text you a photo of me with the

[38:02]headset on if you want to refer to that how cool i look there is no way to look cool wearing a vr

[38:06]headset you look like a huge dork not like i normally look where i'm the cool guy by the pool

[38:13]all right let's talk about we're ready to talk about dorks kid and play yeah yes i'll i'll give

[38:21]you guys each 20 bucks if we can do kid and play instead of this album right now terrible all right

[38:26]let's talk about kid a russell not kid and play okay please don't make puns anymore like that

[38:31]that's my area of the podcast so let me go i don't like that when you go that makes me think

[38:37]you're really bad uh all right let's talk about uh this was in 1997

[38:43]okay let's go back in the wayback machine oh you're just going like straight dick shit you're

[38:47]going straight encyclopedia tonight well here's the thing is that i think the best way to think

[38:51]about this album is that you have to think about what they're doing beforehand which was okay

[38:55]computer 1997 huge hit for him put him on the map every they were one of the biggest rock bands at

[39:00]the time period and i actually did my due diligence i listened to okay computer today and i gotta say

[39:05]it is it's you can hear what you're hearing on kid a which is a lot of synth and computer sounds

[39:13]and it's rock and that's all this stuff but tom york was just totally stressed from that tour he

[39:18]hated it it was a terrible point in his life and and on top of that he had writer's block couldn't

[39:22]think of anything to write so he decided that they were going to totally diverge from what

[39:27]they're doing they're going to make an album that focused less on melodies and more on rhythms which

[39:31]is interesting when you listen to it where they were like we don't give a shit what the singer's

[39:34]saying like we just want to create kind of a feel with it uh and and a lot of what he did is that he

[39:41]you know he would take the lyrics and cut them out of the album and he would take the lyrics and cut

[39:43]them up and then just put them in randomly you know and and at the time on their website they

[39:47]had how to make a dadaist poem do you guys know what dada art is that's how i do all my first

[39:52]dates where i just say random thoughts without stringing any of them together in any sort of

[39:56]coherent matter it's really well for me i thought you're going to say that you make them call you

[39:59]dada makes them call them daddy might make more sense do you ever start a date like that like

[40:06]you can call me daddy just once can you try that and record it audio and then we'll play it on the

[40:13]texting now just once messaging now okay i got a message from russ edit podcast no no um but so dada

[40:20]art and i when i taught middle school english class i used to bring this up all the time it's

[40:24]the idea of like where the guy just put a urinal in a museum and he said this is it was duchamp and

[40:29]he just said this is art everybody's like well that's not art he's like it's in the museum it's

[40:32]art so it's the idea of like not making something showing like how fake everything is and that's

[40:43]music but it's not what you think of he referred to the rock music at the time as a refrigerator

[40:47]buzz and he didn't want to be part of just that bland white noise so they came out with this he

[40:53]was listening to a lot of electronic music they came out with this album kid a um and basically

[40:58]it debuted at number one in the u.s it's their only it's their first uh number one album in the

[41:04]u.s but at the end of the day it only sold a third as many albums now part of that is that it was

[41:09]leaked on napster two weeks ahead of time but part of that too is that when this came out

[41:13]half the rate the radio head fans hated it and they won't admit it now it's kind of like a dylan

[41:18]going electric they all say they love it now but i you know and if i was a radio head aficionado

[41:25]at this time i would have been completely pissed off at this because you go from their earlier

[41:30]stuff you got the caramel police and you've got the high and dry and all this and all of a sudden

[41:33]you go to this i would have been at like what in the hell is this like when you hear it first blush

[41:39]you know like we've got the the uh we've got the ability to listen to this 20 years

[41:43]after it's come out and kind of hear the everything else that's come behind it which

[41:46]i personally like this album but i would have i would have totally been in that radio head camp

[41:51]of what in the hell do they do what are they trying to do here with this if uh if i would

[41:56]have been a big fan back then because the thing about this album is that it's it seems influential

[42:00]to us now looking back but i did my due diligence today too rob and this album was of its time it

[42:07]was a lot like other things so when i did my due diligence today and listened to apex twin i tried

[42:13]listened to otaker last night that one's a little too mathematical for me but this album sounds like

[42:18]other things that were happening at the time so it it took a lot of those sounds into to a different

[42:23]audience and uh including the human voice was a big change from what was going on in electronic

[42:29]music but this wasn't you know completely out of the blue nothing's ever been like it before

[42:34]aaron shut up for a second here's the thing is that was that was extra i shouldn't have done

[42:39]that all right here's the thing is that i so you guys are saying this is an influential album

[42:43]why don't i hear albums like this then i mean are we talking that this was influential because it's

[42:47]not a it's not a radio album you don't you could find albums like this if you yeah right yeah but

[42:53]you know every every time this has happened in the past rolling stones uh brought you know blues

[42:59]to america and all this stuff you know it's been on the radio and you know bruce springsteen's

[43:04]bringing out that long right you know it's all been on the radio this is not a radio album right

[43:09]you don't hear this there's not a station that plays these songs and so that's why i think

[43:13]it kind of flies under the radar a little bit as it's not radio hits that come out of here i i think

[43:18]a great way to sum up this album is to listen to how people describe it electronica experimental

[43:23]rock post rock alternative rock post prog ambient electronic rock and art rock yeah now i do love

[43:30]they might be giants and and there are some things in this that sound like they might be giants where

[43:34]it's kind of i consider that kind of an art rock nerd rock type stuff but i did hear a ton of like

[43:38]just soundscape ambient ambient ambient

[43:43]noise oh it's great i mean for me it was if you listen to headphones you got you can we can start

[43:49]getting into the tracks to russell's point you know but if we want to if you have headphones on

[43:53]you're listening to this it's way different than just listening to it off your phone or

[43:57]some sort of speaker and i was walking around doing some post-holiday trying to find my uh

[44:02]my blow-ups at menards and and uh home depot which they were sold out of so it was a complete waste

[44:08]so but you know listening to headphones it was great

[44:13]i was just at peace i was just at peace so well let's get into the album all right let's talk

[44:18]about it so we start off with probably the biggest most popular song on the album everything in its

[44:22]right place and this is this has been on a number of movies a number of tv shows was recently on the

[44:29]hbo had a about this cult and it was going through the whole cult how they started

[44:34]and this is it was just it's phenomenal it's phenomenal background did you think that keith

[44:38]ranieri had a lot of good ideas though i thought so i was like this is the other one

[44:43]this is the other call one oh shoot those first chords let you know exactly too what the album's

[44:47]going to be about like oh this is different like you hear it right away and it's different

[44:51]i also thought it's cool how they're using tom's voice here it actually reminds me of

[44:54]prince's voice on when doves cry so it shows you also that this has been done you're taking the

[44:59]human voice you're running through some other uh process and then it comes out something different

[45:05]use it as texture i know this is the sucking on a lemon song so in in in cheers of that tonight i

[45:13]drinking truly original lemonade so why do i feel like you just had some lemonade seltzers lying

[45:18]around and you're using you're just like i'm not wasting anything good on this album did brian

[45:24]setzer work on this album at all i could bring that in no sets or seltzer all right so uh he did

[45:29]write this song originally on piano but nobody liked it until he transferred it to the synths

[45:33]and this was the song because all of his bandmates were really nervous about making his album because

[45:37]they're so different there's no real like the guitar player's like i'm not i didn't contribute

[45:41]a bunch to a bunch of these songs like

[45:43]that was really hard for me as being a band but they said when they finished this song they said

[45:47]this is the album and it's going to be great like they they knew instantly and in fact they said if

[45:52]we weren't able to put out an album we were just going to break up because he didn't want to make

[45:55]that same old crap anymore and they ended up making so many songs that they used they were

[45:58]going to make a double album and then they put all their songs onto the next album next up okay

[46:03]and aaron don't do it don't laugh at this now this is the this is the titular track

[46:13]this one might be my favorite i like but i'm i'm a sucker for like that sort of glockenspiel-esque

[46:21]sound i don't know what instrument that is and then i i think it's just because aaron's got head

[46:26]on sticks and not but that's that's why i thought it was and here if i know listen if you if you

[46:32]could try to listen to the background there's a really low bass in there and i don't know if we

[46:37]could hear it you know through zoom or whatever but you know when you've got headphones on you

[46:41]really hear it in this one and that's that kind of bass in there and i don't know if we could hear

[46:43]that kind of that melancholy low beat that just kind of puts you in a nice calm mood i think but

[46:49]i'm with i i i really like this song as well this was another album by the way when you tried to

[46:54]find out what it was about tom york is just giving you the bullshit over and over there's like three

[46:58]different sources with different stuff does it have to be about something well and that's the

[47:01]point is that this kid a is actually named after a file that came with his synthesizer and so he's

[47:07]like i'm just gonna call it canada because oh my god that's a good joke i should write that down

[47:13]um done will do okay i mean there's a joke not me there's a 100 chance that kid cuddy has spent

[47:20]entire nights whacked out on whatever drugs kid cuddy does listening to this album right i mean

[47:25]rob for you to say i don't hear music like this it's like no this is super influential like everyone

[47:29]who's a musician now to be fair i heard this music standing in my underwear in my bedroom

[47:33]at 10 o'clock last night with my hands up in the air like this going yeah you would

[47:37]you would love rob dub this in over this but there's a there's a guy out of philly i think

[47:41]called suburban

[47:43]you know suburban he's a like kind of this he's like thinking of t-urban nope suburban and he's

[47:48]kind of got it he absolutely pulled his uh latest song off of this this uh track right here so i

[47:56]don't know it's it's crazy and let's listen to it now why are we pausing there's no reason to pause

[48:02]i'm gonna edit it in guys we didn't need to pause yeah i can hear the simulators hey you know what

[48:09]oh say we should all stand up for this one

[48:13]yeah this is the national anthem uh

[48:16]all rise no that's a court not the national anthem here this all right what the hell are you talking

[48:24]about that that bass guitar in the background there yeah it goes through oh so this was the

[48:32]bass line he wrote when he was 16 and he uh they set up this song inspired by the jazz musician

[48:39]charles mingus a little hi-hat in there

[48:43]oh i thought you're telling me to turn what do you guys think oh what do you guys think of like

[48:47]the point on some of these songs like the end of this is just these horns blaring back and forth

[48:51]like there's no i don't know what they're trying to do musically but it literally sounds like a

[48:55]terrible fifth grade band you guys enjoy that part of these songs or not yep i'm gonna tell you

[49:01]it's interesting to ask about if i enjoyed it or not it this this whole album and we've talked

[49:06]about this album a few times it piques my curiosity enough curiosity enough to know that i i don't know

[49:12]if i'm enjoying it or not but it sparks my interest and i think about it and um yeah and then knowing

[49:18]that they were interested in mingus i get it i just think he just does this do i think it's

[49:23]interesting too and yeah yeah do i think it's interesting more than do i like it you know i

[49:28]think it's an interesting track and i and i enjoyed listening will i go back to russell

[49:33]admittedly probably not very many times right this was the first dance at my wedding yeah

[49:37]well russell wasn't there yet because he was still picking up uh

[49:42]statues that's probably good that it wasn't he wasn't there yet he would have left right then

[49:48]one thing i noticed on this album was kind of they were kind of messing with the voices

[49:53]and i was reading about it and so they're using this thing called a ring modulator which i believe

[49:58]aaron was also included on the early moog synthesizers yes but so i started wondering

[50:03]what are some other famous songs that have used the ring modulator so i came up with this for you

[50:08]this is gonna be fun are you guys talking about moog rings that

[50:12]change color when you're moog

[50:13]by the way my daughter and we'll get into it but my daughter did get a mood ring for

[50:19]the holidays this year and she is just bummed about it she's like i'm sad

[50:23]is it all oh yeah she's always blue she's like i'm sad i'm like no sweetie the ring is wrong

[50:28]you are not just sad she's like i feel fine but i must be sad i was like no don't do this

[50:31]commie work is right consumerism culture is killing us all can't you get like a fake one

[50:37]where it only has the good colors that's a great idea russell i'm gonna delete this part but that's

[50:42]a great good mood rings good mood rings good moog rings they also they also distort your voice when

[50:48]you sing into it okay go ahead not all right the first song on the list so sometimes these i don't

[50:56]really know if i'm factually correct on all this stuff i'm just reading what i what i could find

[51:01]and but mike mike will tell me but it seems like people use these ring modulators differently like

[51:07]kid on kid a they're using it on some of the lyrics they use it with some of the guitar but so i'm

[51:11]guys like now wait a minute wait a minute what is a ring modulator can you explain this to me

[51:15]because what i'm picturing is it makes dirty to even say

[51:18]well this also makes things sound wobbly so it could be somewhat similar i guess it can constrict

[51:26]things so it's more interesting constrict things oh my god my understanding is it kind of takes

[51:32]two separate inputs and then creates a different sound and it can make it something sound more

[51:36]wobbly or make it oh no my vr headset heard you and it searched it well better put that on to you

[51:40]guys later

[51:41]it constricts things and holds things back for a while oh yeah so the first song is billy cobham

[51:49]it's called red baron and this is they're using one of these ring modulators on a keyboard

[51:54]so i think it starts kind of changing here in a second

[51:59]what year is this it's like screwing with the sound of the keyboard yeah this is good i mean

[52:07]this sounds like something you would hear on kid a

[52:11]i like this this is fun this is named after my third favorite kind of pizza

[52:16]cobham red baron

[52:19]what are your top two what are your top i love cobham jacks i love uh tony's said nobody ever

[52:28]two dollar jack's pizza tony's totino's tostitos and i like the bigfoot from little caesars

[52:35]man there used to be one coat i'm not gonna do this let's keep going with the list

[52:39]wait aaron wrote a sign on a sign double meat oh aaron my vr headset heard that i'm still trying

[52:48]to play better next up is all right here might be the most famous of the ring modulator

[52:53]when it comes to vocals it's the beginning of iron man by black sabbath you guys will all know

[53:00]this part i don't i haven't heard about any iron man yet

[53:09]i suppose we could afford there we go

[53:10]this has got to be the most famous use of it right i played this one for my son not that

[53:19]long ago and it blew his mind he loved it oh you're a terrible father yeah was he terrified

[53:22]or did he like it or what he doesn't even care about those werewolves yeah more than

[53:27]so the really interesting thing is

[53:37]fucking rocks uh black

[53:39]sabbath also really used this on the song paranoid and the guitar player at the time

[53:43]hated that they used this ring modulator on the guitar solo on paranoid which actually became one

[53:49]of their most famous kind of sounds and one of their most famous songs and at the time he hated

[53:53]it and over time he's just become used to the fact that well they kind of mess with my sound

[53:57]with this ring modulator but check this one out this is the solo in paranoid

[54:00]oh i never understood that that makes sense

[54:09]so that's one solo i always thought that was like multiple guitars

[54:11]because on my headphones i hear it on the story of music is the story of technology there's all

[54:17]these sounds that you're always like wow how did the guitar do that oh it turns out they

[54:20]used some enhancements russell this is amazing and so my favorite of all time was music that

[54:29]is associated with the tv show and we'll see if you guys recognize this it's the end credits to

[54:33]the tv show south park you'll recognize the song but they use a ring modulator for part of this and

[54:38]this was les claypool from primus that wrote these songs for south park

[54:42]oh yeah that's cool

[54:50]it's good you can hear the sort of varying degrees of modulation you can go through right like some

[54:56]of these were a little bit less and then this one's kind of extreme i wonder if i can find a

[54:59]free ring modulation plug-in online and do it to my voice so magic's like 69 i'm sure it's gonna

[55:08]i'm sure magic mike 69 is going to bring the pain on everything i got wrong with that but

[55:13]there's the history of ring modulators and where it's cool this is good

[55:17]bang russell that's so good i am iron man and then i come out and iron your shirt

[55:25]now is it cool if you're playing golf with people every time

[55:31]you hit a shorter shot you go i am iron man

[55:38]i am driver man that doesn't make sense because you do that first on the first hole they're like

[55:44]i am driver man but then they get the joke later when you say i am iron the worst part about golfing

[55:50]with rob is when he never hits it past the women's tees and then he's always playing with his pants

[55:53]down for the rest of the hole it gets really annoying after like six holes rob you can pull

[55:58]your pants up especially what he's doing with his vr goggles the first time is enough rob it's good

[56:03]i'm the only guy you see kicking the ball backwards oh wow that one went past the tees oh let me go look

[56:08]okay rob's standing in his living room with no pants on swinging a fake golf club while he's

[56:14]wearing his vr goggles that he got from his parents well the kid cutting concert hadn't

[56:17]started yet that's why i was doing that okay i'll always wear pants with my vr goggles just kidding

[56:24]think about what we talked about rob's parents and then when rob's parents find out what he's

[56:28]doing with those vr goggles he wants to disappear i'm going to edit this out but i will say this

[56:32]trying to standing up is a young man's game i'm going to say that right now

[56:38]it is not easy to do burning and with the vr goggles with the vr goggles you can't lie down

[56:45]and look down because the horizon is still where the horizon is so you can't like see it on a screen

[56:50]ahead of you well no if you're like jerking it lying down where it is why do you need to look

[56:54]down like because it's vr you can look around and see everything so if you just lie on your

[56:58]back and look up at the ceiling you're literally seeing the ceiling in the porn scene is that what

[57:03]you're into aaron oh you sick freak don't make me keep this in i can't don't make any good jokes i

[57:07]cannot keep this part in

[57:08]so you gotta like the popcorn on the top of that ceiling

[57:11]lying on your back and then you're trying to see us like your toes like that's what you have to do

[57:17]it's almost not you're speaking rosie's language okay no no no stop it you just prop up on some

[57:23]pillows or something there's got to be like there's ways i'm not just in don't make me keep

[57:28]this in don't say funny stuff and don't reference it later seriously i'm not talking about it with

[57:33]my vr just in case your mom's listening you can play the next song anytime

[57:38]rob you're the you're the captain of the ship you're the master host or whatever you said

[57:42]okay master host you're trying to make me talk about vr again i'm not going to do it i'm not

[57:46]falling into that trap all right let's talk about how to this um so in the last after the last

[57:54]podcast russ was like i really like it when you make puns of the album track names and i'm really

[57:59]trying to do it but it really has slowed me down guys so but i'm going to try here okay

[58:02]how to disappear how to disappear how to okay i got this when i only like apples it's how to

[58:07]disappear nailed it oh you're so soft squishy eating you is no problem bear first joke i've

[58:17]ever heard why do you agree so easily on this week's podcast to be rob i do not like when you

[58:23]make puns during the song title big tracks one thing i'll say is i really did not enjoy this

[58:29]album at all tom york said this is the most beautiful song they ever did and i have to agree

[58:34]i completely agree this song is beautiful it's kind of like haunting

[58:37]and i really enjoyed this one this was my favorite favorite song i like all of the songs that don't

[58:42]have guitar on this album it's weird i a radiohead is such a guitar band in my mind but but i think

[58:48]the guitar based songs in this album are the weakest parts and this one yeah i love it and

[58:55]there's probably a guitar in there somewhere music mike's gonna nail me on it but you know

[58:58]what i'm trying to say like the driving guitar is absent he's gonna not be listening to this

[59:03]after what we said about him in the kanye episode so we need to stop referencing oh he'll be back

[59:07]he'll be back he'll come crawling back he likes it when we make fun of him you sicko

[59:12]he'll probably be listening to it while he's walking around with his headphones on talking

[59:17]with people yeah right what's your guys's favorite christmas song okay now i made fun

[59:22]of him for something i actually liked so here's the deal wait i i feel like you just stole my

[59:27]bumble opener rob did you get that from my bumble account too or not this is not good

[59:31]russell do you have a little special request on bumble it's roberta yes rob

[59:37]let's fuck all right so uh i will say my wife must love this song because i've noticed in my

[59:43]google history searches how to disappear completely it's just typed in over and over

[59:47]only when she's home so i didn't know she was such a big fan i i was gonna ask her but i was

[59:52]no time to ask

[59:54]busy uh looking straight down but no by the way i'm gonna say this getting caught

[60:01]off is embarrassing getting caught off with vr goggles on humiliated and it's actually even worse

[60:07]because when you turn off the goggles what they do is they show you a camera of what you're looking

[60:10]at it's bad it's really bad okay so uh that that the refrain of that song where he he repeats to

[60:23]himself i'm not here this isn't happening is from his okay computer tour he was so stressed out that

[60:27]he called michael stipe so you know you're in big trouble when you're calling michael stipe to be

[60:31]like mentally like level turn yeah yeah uh and he goes he goes well can you see me

[60:37]he goes no i'm over here he goes is that you in the middle of the room and you know what michael

[60:40]stipe said that's me in the corner no he actually said yeah but michael stipe said to him just say

[60:48]to yourself just close the blinds and say to yourself over and over i'm not here this isn't

[60:51]happening so i was thinking that's good advice right like that sounds like the most midwestern

[60:56]minnesota advice of like don't worry about it it's not happening shove it down it'll go away

[61:00]it's not going to affect you later stop it down there and never bring it up ever again yeah it's

[61:06]a slip right it's when you say something and you mean your mom i mean no wait that's not the joke

[61:13]i'm going to say that again it's when you say one thing and you mean your mother i mean that's the

[61:19]joke okay worth it nailed rob when you get caught with the vr goggles on is the creepy noise that

[61:26]you're making is that like the same sound that this song tree ringers is playing for the whole

[61:31]time is that a similar creepy type sound because i already have a pun about tree fingers i thought

[61:36]i walked today did you guys hear about the guy who worked in the sawmill and had an accident

[61:40]yeah his name now is no three fingers he's irish part of the joke i forgot to say

[61:47]three fingers i think that's norwegian boy i'm patio three fingers that's there it is nailed it

[61:55]so i i recognize this song this sounds like the creepy beginning to a u2 song but it's the whole

[62:01]yeah it's like the whole track yeah no lyrics just filler

[62:06]it sounds like a big church organ i love it colin greenwood of the band has come out and said that

[62:11]this song shows his desire to make an album that's not too long or too boring not sure how that song

[62:16]is not too boring did he get one sounds nice and short i will say that i do it's a quick one yeah

[62:22]10 songs fast no problem russell still give me the speed it up sign all right uh this is a song

[62:28]uh when i go get my eyes checked optimistic i'm not doing this anymore russell this is torture for

[62:32]me okay you're right i'm not allowed to make this song i'm not allowed to make this song i'm not

[62:36]going to make suggestions anymore this is not going well but it is if i go see a witch about

[62:39]my eyes it's an optimistic

[62:41]oh i kind of like that i'm back baby i'm back i've never left

[62:47]at least rob's not swearing

[62:52]yeah this is the one that's like to me a little bit more like what you imagine radiohead to be

[63:01]and i don't like it as much as the other stuff on the album well that's probably because you're

[63:05]it's about your favorite song it's about your favorite song it's about your favorite song it's about

[63:06]your favorite thing consumerism talking about a big fish or eating the little ones he's talking

[63:10]about businesses getting bigger but in the end he's saying a phrase that his partner said to him

[63:14]which is try the best you can the best you can is good enough that's not true for any of you by the

[63:20]way i went i went and took rob's advice and i went and bought a filet-o-fish from mcdonald's

[63:25]because i'd never had cheese or no cheese no okay i've never had one i want to be clear about that

[63:30]i say i've had one because i never it was like the d'angelo poster that's a lot well you knew

[63:35]there was cheese on it

[63:36]on it i figured you had to have had it if you know what i'm in mcdonald's i'm always looking around

[63:39]in case anybody drops a fry i'm a real fry spy

[63:44]so in this case i was the big fish and i ate i ate about half of the little fish and i i don't

[63:51]get it i don't understand why put the mcrib on all season long i would never get rid of that

[63:55]filet-o-fish well the filet-o-fish is for catholics i mean i was listening to that episode we were

[63:58]editing i was like well that's why they have it right yeah it's like on fridays on fridays right

[64:03]yeah consumerism you want to

[64:05]apologize to the catholics russell republicans buy sneakers too oh that's a different um different

[64:12]thing i feel like john lennon got in trouble for making like this one so i'm not gonna even comment

[64:16]turns out we're bigger than john lennon and jesus all right so we have rob rob you're gonna be in

[64:24]limbo forever for making a joke like that i can't believe you made that joke you're gonna be in limbo

[64:28]for way too long from a higher power this is what happens to a flail fish when rush limbo eats it

[64:33]it's in limbo russell please

[64:35]you torture me with this i cannot come up with a good one every time

[64:38]but i was gonna say this is russell down in florida in limbo

[64:41]i like this one i thought this was like hypnotic

[64:50]yeah i guess this one yeah this one's got guitars and i do i do enjoy this one

[64:57]so maybe i'm wrong about my previous take

[64:59]so

[65:05]one of the things that i thought about a lot listening this album was

[65:07]as i said i tried to listen to other electronic music of the time i guess they call it idm

[65:13]intelligent dance music i don't know wait say that again edm idm there's there's something

[65:19]called idm i looked at pitchfork's list of the 50 greatest idm records of all time i tried to

[65:24]listen to parts of all of them and none of them have human voice in them and then it made me

[65:29]think about public enemy it reminded me of the way public enemy used flave of flave but also

[65:35]snippets of other voices as music and as texture and so i think that's kind of what radiohead's doing

[65:42]here and i don't know if they were listening to public enemy but somehow to me those two things

[65:47]are linked and it might just be recency bias but i like how they're using the human voice as an

[65:52]instrument and this one is is a big example of that you know you're talking about ibm makes me

[65:56]think about my nuts big blue idm oh idm okay well that joke is worthless

[66:05]by the way i had an ibs joke locked and loaded too

[66:08]well you might as well let us save it for the end rob ibs you say rob huh

[66:17]yeah it's no i didn't actually have one right man how can you call me out on that

[66:22]i had the semblance of a joke as in just say ibs all right uh the next one up idioteka idiotek

[66:30]basically what we call our it guys

[66:35]that was a good one is this what this podcast is now russell what have you done

[66:43]i was listening to this album in the car with my son today and he said turn it up

[66:48]so if there's any chance if there was any chance of him not being like one of us it's gone now he

[66:55]said to turn it down listen to this song can you imagine him going to school and the teacher's like

[66:59]hey whatever his name is i already forgot actually i probably should say that on there

[67:05]i'm gonna beep out your kid's name like it's a swear word all right what why did i say the beep

[67:11]what's your favorite song i like idioteka by radiohead oh my god i'm calling the cops

[67:17]immediately reporting this parent this parent's obviously on molly all the time

[67:22]it was kind of interesting how they wrote this song basically one guy took and made random

[67:27]samples for about uh 40 minutes on a tape tom york listened to the whole thing and cut out

[67:31]40 seconds in the middle loop that and he was like yeah that's the part i like

[67:34]and that's how they made the song out of it so there you go that that's the one that most

[67:40]reminded me of pure electronica as i think of it like like a craftwork type thing or yeah exactly

[67:46]with the drum machine right i i think one of my heart one of my biggest challenges with this album

[67:52]is i think back to when we were in college there was a guy in our dorm so on one end i went to

[67:58]school with aaron in our freshman year and aaron was went to school for vocal performance so aaron

[68:04]did he's a singer can probably play the trombone at least to a second chair level but there was a

[68:10]kid at the other end of our dorm who had like the turntable he was doing like the electronic music

[68:14]and i'm having a hard time listening to this thinking that guy could be considered a better

[68:20]musician than aaron because he could do something like this when i don't see like where the talent

[68:25]comes from i understand like it's messing with computers and whatnot or or technology but i have

[68:30]a hard time understanding listening to this why these people would be considered better musicians

[68:34]than someone like aaron who could sing his ass off well i think radio had proved that they can do it

[68:38]all right i mean that's that's partially why i picked that song creep for the opener right is

[68:43]like none of these songs like matt said none of these songs are radio songs i literally tried to

[68:47]think of some karaoke to some of these and i was like i'm gonna do it and i was like i wonder if

[68:51]people in the crowd will care the crowd our audience will care if i do creep when it's not

[68:56]on this album and i was like why do i care about that that's so stupid creep is such a fun song to

[68:59]sing i'm gonna do it anyway i took your question and made it about me sorry about that i guess the

[69:04]thing about that i'm imagining and i'm not russell you're very generous about my musical

[69:10]talents which are not as great as you described but thank you but you remember that guy who we

[69:14]used to play this type of you know he made kind of electronic music and if someone at the time

[69:18]would have said i think that guy's a better musician than you aaron i think i would have

[69:22]been annoyed yeah that's true i think what i'm imagining now what i'm imagining now and this

[69:27]isn't going to be fair either is what if what if aretha covered this album and radiohead

[69:34]tried to make i've never loved a man the way i loved you like which would have come out better

[69:39]i think it would be aretha doing this album because she was a great keyboardist as well

[69:43]as a great great singer and radiohead would fall on their faces trying to make i've loved

[69:48]i've never loved a man the way i loved you but maybe maybe something great would have come out

[69:51]of both that's a really interesting question i that's fascinating to me i love to think about

[69:55]aretha trying to do a radio album i think that'd be fun but i don't know would she be able to do

[69:59]an album like this where like you're you like can you imagine making

[70:04]an album and you're like we don't care about the lyrics we're just going to cut them up who cares

[70:07]i mean think of what like kendrick lamar you think yeah when i was reading about this album though

[70:13]part of this was they were just trying to figure this this technology out on the go like i don't

[70:17]think they were experts in this technology they were just kind of not i shouldn't say throwing

[70:21]shit at the wall but they were they were trying to like figure this out as they went so like who's

[70:26]to say you couldn't give rob and matt and aaron the same technology and you guys couldn't do

[70:30]something just as well right all right that's why that's why i keep saying

[70:34]there were there were other bands doing this that's why i kept saying there in spite of our

[70:39]other bands doing this and i think that to me the big difference is adding tom's voice back in there

[70:43]which isn't necessarily a great voice but it it works really well for this album but man now i

[70:48]want it now i want to well it the whole thing but it's a it's a known band too like if this

[70:53]was their first album i mean they don't make it to the second album right i mean they have this

[70:59]back catalog that they can fall back on they can go do live shows they can go play all the

[71:03]festivals they can go play all the tours they want in you know for this album but they've got

[71:09]their catalog to play back on you know they got sick of playing their back catalog and they didn't

[71:13]want to create that anymore so they're pivoting to this new style right but in the end i mean

[71:19]they've they've created enough equity in what they've done in the past to be able to do this

[71:24]uh you know this time around it's it's great when bands and people have the ability to do this

[71:31]because this is completely just their own

[71:33]um you know what's coming off of that has anything to do with selling records isn't anything to do

[71:39]with trying to please the record uh heads as anything to do with anything but trying to put

[71:43]out what they want to put out and they've had the ability they've built up that equity and now they

[71:48]can do it and send you know now we're here talking what is the 20th greatest album of all time they

[71:52]can't do that if they didn't get everything before them before but are there guys in their basement

[71:57]making stuff that's just as good yeah possibly right yeah yeah for sure but again it comes but

[72:03]it comes down to you know consumerism or you know let's let's take it to that right if somebody

[72:09]doesn't buy it i mean it can only go as far as that guy's basement then right i i would argue

[72:14]though that a person in their basement is not going to make this whole album they might hit a

[72:19]song i don't think they would be able to create an album like this no because you there are actually

[72:22]more instruments than you can fit in a basement you're right wait that wasn't even okay i thought

[72:31]you're making some sort of vr porn joke again and i was like

[72:33]but i and especially you wouldn't have a guy in your basement go back and be able to make okay

[72:39]computer and go back and be able to make creep right right i mean it just wouldn't happen uh

[72:45]the next song is like the opening scene in uh beauty and the beast morning bell that's a cut

[72:52]for my kids don't listen to this kids i just talk about vr oh my god my kids are gonna listen to

[72:56]this when i die i thought rob for sure here was gonna talk his morning or something on this one

[73:03]this might be my favorite track on the album i love this one

[73:05]i just love when he says release me i feel that that's the one that i can relate to

[73:15]to look behind the curtain we did this album as a as a test of the podcast right away and we

[73:22]realized we had gold on our hands immediately of course and i said and i said on that podcast i

[73:27]said you know i am going to listen to this album again not true have not listened to it since then

[73:31]like even that's

[73:33]i do enjoy it but that voice and the noise it's not something that makes me i and it was fun to

[73:37]walk around new york city today listening to this album but i i had to i had to kind of force myself

[73:42]to do it for sure but that's one of the fun things about this podcast is there are many things like

[73:46]you know fleetwood mac rumors i never ever i'm gonna listen to that again but i really enjoyed

[73:51]the week i spent listening to it so there's this none of this stuff none of this album is necessarily

[73:57]going to stick in my quiver of regular rotation but i've enjoyed diving into it and talking to you guys

[74:02]about it and hearing your thoughts yeah well this album is kind of like going to the dentist right

[74:06]turns you on what rob your mic's off okay so nobody else gets turned on go to the dentist check

[74:15]my sister's a dentist i just remembered all right motion picture soundtrack can you see rob like

[74:22]sitting at the dentist while he's laying down and they he's like can you arch my chair i can't see

[74:27]what i want to be seeing while i'm laying completely horizontal he's got like the vr goggles out of

[74:32]there like mr this is a family practice i'm just picturing myself getting fired from my job because

[74:38]people are listening to me talk about self-love okay first of all everyone does it okay it's okay

[74:44]to do you prudes while wearing vr goggles in the bathroom in the shower running so my family can't

[74:49]hear it coming through the speakers but whatever like it's not like i've done it okay you lie down

[74:53]i've never done that i love this numbing rob loves the numbing agent that they apply to him that

[75:02]allows him to last longer

[75:03]we have gone all the way off the rails they put it in my mouth how will i get it to the tip of my

[75:11]penis they come back in sir not again comparative remove some of your ribs

[75:21]swish and spit speaking of dennis did you know that the reason they know everything about you

[75:28]when you come in is that they write it down in a freaking book when they talk you said that in like

[75:32]episode three yeah it's crazy to me so my my dentist book like just says self suck real big

[75:37]and then like

[75:38]don't allow him to wear vr goggles two dentists you know those big you know those big plastic

[75:48]shields that people wear now because of the pandemic they've got to wear two of those where

[75:51]rob comes into the office i had one on the bottom all right just pressing up against like put him

[75:57]on the glass i'm putting it on the glass myself i'm putting it right here all right

[76:02]is there is there usually a soundtrack to your vr motion picture there is this is a motion picture

[76:06]soundtrack final song on the album they said they were trying to make this sound like a 1950 disney

[76:11]movie and then they did it i mean this this is a is this the most depressing way to end an album

[76:20]ever i mean listen it's yeah it's rough

[76:22]i read that uh nigel goodrich who was the producer for kid a also produced a few of beck's albums so

[76:31]the mutations sea change the information that makes sense and these albums were actually noted

[76:36]as being kind of a big change for back too because it had more of like this atmospheric sound that

[76:41]you hear on this than some of his other like more rap type focus or or i'd say hip-hop or whatever

[76:46]you want to call his earlier albums but in 2010 night nigel goodrich actually worked with beck to

[76:53]compose the movie score for the movie scott pilgrim versus the world and so rob if you want

[76:58]to pull up ramona by beck

[77:01]so this is ramona by beck produced by nigel goodrich who worked with on kid a you can

[77:10]probably hear like somewhat of a similar sound sounds like bully it does sound like so i gotta

[77:15]ask you guys while while kid a had the track called motion picture soundtrack i think when

[77:23]it comes to making songs on motion picture soundtracks with nigel goodrich who did it

[77:28]better beck did it better beck definitely did it better beck did it better that was good russ okay

[77:35]so that is it let's get into everyone's favorite and you know what do we get a lot of text messages

[77:42]making fun of aaron for some reason i don't know who would encourage that kind of behavior

[77:45]yes do i get even more texts saying they love the rating system yes i do

[77:50]and now it's time for everybody's favorite part of the show

[77:57]the

[77:58]oh that's right i'm i'm hosting i gotta tell you the main host

[78:13]oh wait it's the main before i am the main host what just happened to rob

[78:18]rob just completely i don't know i was i don't know i was just like staring off into space

[78:23]who knows why could be any reason all right so my final rating i guess they did too rob put those

[78:28]vr goggles down and pull your pants back up before we

[78:30]please i'm playing the big radio game again ignore me please rob can we go one episode

[78:38]without you watching the hulk go get sex tape on your vr goggles can we just go one

[78:42]you know when you wear the vr goggles you feel like you ate a bunch of sushi

[78:45]the menu just says fuck friend's wife and you're like click the only option

[78:58]oh wait when you do real well though you can also bankrupt a gawker okay so let's too many

[79:04]filet-o-fish brother extra cheese definitely official looks like my skin tone brother

[79:11]you do bronies all right eat a bunch of sushi full pig but all right joke i just sped up the

[79:18]joke there i ran out of time okay so is this album kid a by radiohead 20th on our list okay

[79:24]is it rolling well toned it belongs at number 20 okay

[79:27]it is a score of an album nailed it is this album rolling boned it's too low on the list

[79:35]it should have been higher should have been 1918 17 16 or is this a rolling groan uh you did not

[79:41]like this album it should not be a 20 it should be uh lower on the list or off the list and when

[79:46]i say lower i mean a higher number so if we're looking at the list on a website it would be

[79:50]lower except for the rolling stone website which actually counts down to one in that case it would

[79:54]be higher so it's that simple what is happening what what's the

[79:57]rating on the list it's too low on the list it should have been higher except for the rolling

[79:57]what's the rating name if we don't think it should be on the list at all that is a rolling

[80:01]let's see rhyme.com stone no no uh that's a rolling

[80:09]get out of my zone russell don't put me on the spot i'm not good at this

[80:16]oh sorry okay now i need to start over okay is this rolling well okay russell what do you think

[80:21]what is your rating for this album we did that we did an episode of this podcast in one of our trial

[80:27]runs and we did an episode of this podcast in one of our trial runs and we did an episode of this

[80:27]and i just shit on it the whole time it was such a bad episode i i never allowed these guys to play

[80:32]it i hopefully send me 50 bucks i will send it to you a good friend of mine matt once said if you

[80:38]don't like it just say it's not for you and move on so i'll kind of do that i don't get the music

[80:42]i respect that it speaks to other people and it's kind of unique and different and it really

[80:47]resonates with some people it doesn't resonate with me at all i don't find it enjoyable honestly

[80:52]i don't really see where the actual talent comes from with this music and i really don't understand

[80:57]the following

[80:57]i think some of the following i believe probably comes from people liking this new kind of unique

[81:02]and different music so they can feel like kind of they're in the know and kind of exclude other

[81:08]people who don't get it and so it's just not for me i don't enjoy it it's it's it's rolling grown

[81:15]for me when you see some of the albums that are coming up on our list i just don't see how this

[81:19]can be rated ahead of born to run by bruce springsteen ready to die the velvet underground

[81:25]um sergeant peppers which used to be one on the list you're

[81:27]telling me this is better than that album tapestry horses and then of course

[81:32]so i just don't see why this is zero episodes if we've listened to if we've listened to matt and

[81:40]i've probably listened to 200 and 250 albums this is probably in my bottom 10 or 15 that we've

[81:45]listened to so rolling between actually between russ uh matt and rosie you've also listened to

[81:50]about 250 albums on the list all right rosie rosie what do you think rolling well tone

[81:57]rolling bone or rolling grown i as russell mentioned this is the second time around for

[82:02]us with this album every time i've listened to it i've enjoyed it i think it's fascinating it it

[82:07]piques my curiosity i i respect it as a work of art and a document of where music was at the time

[82:15]i don't think it's better than enter the wu-tang as russell mentioned or better than many of the

[82:21]albums that will come after i also take particular issue with uh radiohead's own admission that

[82:27]they were inspired by mingus and i don't even think mingus is on this list anywhere so mingus

[82:32]um and mingus mingus mingus and black saint and the single lady don't make it in here at all

[82:36]um so as much as i don't want to be negative about this album because i do really like it

[82:41]uh i think for purposes of the list i will say it is a rolling grown

[82:46]oh it's real late in the episode for this who did you say after mingus mingus mingus mingus

[82:57]please don't condescend to us we know that what is what was the one you said after mingus didn't

[83:02]you say something well there's mingus um and there's black saints in the center lady which

[83:06]i think black saint in the center lady is my favorite uh mingus album

[83:09]okay let's go around what's our favorite mingus album all right actually i used to have a couple

[83:16]of charles mingus albums yeah right you don't want to brag your friend all right matt rolling

[83:20]well-toned rolling bone to rolling grown what do you think i am going to say this is rolling grown

[83:26]but not

[83:26]i'm going to say this is rolling grown but not

[83:27]in a not in a bad way um i'm kind of with the other guys that there's so many other

[83:33]albums that could be placed above it i look at you know each of these you know we're kind of

[83:39]going through this section at the end i kind of look at where does this fit in right like

[83:43]stevie wonder has a section of a of the population that he'll always speak to and the beatles always

[83:50]have a section bob dylan you know this is probably the first i don't know section for maybe

[83:56]i don't know i don't know

[83:57]35 to 50 year old white males who never played sports in high school kind of a deal you know i

[84:04]don't know like i feel like there's this huge population out there that just doesn't care for

[84:09]pop music you know and this is exactly what speaks to them and you know it's not on the radio it's

[84:16]something that's not uh the top 100 list trying to sell albums yeah radio head not on the radio

[84:23]aaron's scouring the radio

[84:27]all right worth it worth that joke move on so yeah so you know i think where it was it used to

[84:33]be at 67 you know that probably feels a little closer to where i think it should be um but that

[84:39]being said every time i listen to it i thoroughly enjoy it just like rosie said i i do like the

[84:44]earlier stuff it is a little more commercial so you know maybe i'm half the problem but um you

[84:49]know i do like radio head as a band and so i don't think i would have listened to this album if we

[84:57]i don't know if i'll come back to it but i did enjoy it and uh i'll end by just saying yeah

[85:02]rolling rolling boned it should be have a higher number which means it's lower on the list on

[85:08]december 24th here uh excuse me it's midnight it's midnight here so it's actually the 20

[85:14]december 28th temperatures drop below zero it's dropped below zero here i didn't forget to mention

[85:19]one thing this was nominated for uh best uh album of the year it didn't win alternative album it did

[85:25]win best alternative album of the year and that's when it won the best alternative album of the year

[85:27]did you say me oh guys she's back

[85:31]so you is she giving a rating i don't have a rating but i heard you were talking about vr

[85:38]i've used vr goggles i stick them up my gotta go bye oh granny so dirty

[85:47]almost made it that's like you guys ever play that game uh what's cards against humanity and

[85:54]some people they try to say like the clever thing and some people they try to say like the clever

[85:57]people just say the dirtiest thing they can say rob just show that he is the dirtiest guy at the

[86:02]table when it comes to i was just gonna say find a man who can do both you guys know what i'm talking

[86:06]about all right so my rating for this album is on this document and i'm scrolling up and down

[86:14]looking for it all right it is a rolling internet chat room this was the first album that you could

[86:21]talk about online i think that's a big reason why it's it's so divisive it's like this this came out

[86:26]it was when everybody guys

[86:27]guys

[86:27]am i right everyone was chatting in the 2000s we loved asl okay age sex location that's okay

[86:34]you guys don't okay so well back to vr see you guys later we're just ass all right so this is
