Kendrick Lamar: To Pimp A Butterfly (2015)

Beck Did It Better Podcast 2015
About this episodeWe talk about the sensational 2015 album and how it is both stressful to listen to and modern poetry. We talk about watching your children play sports, favorite holiday gifts and there is an apology of the week involving Mariah Carey and a red snowmobile suit.  We talk about how this album is a history lesson in music from funk to bebop  (with Thundercat and George Clinton) and how Busta Rhymes led to one of us crowd surfing.  Reach out to us and say how great we are at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com and follow us on twitter and instagram @beckdiditbetter Call or text us at the BECK LINE at 802

[00:00]In 2020, four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by Rolling Stone magazine.

[00:05]This resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music, excoriated the order, and led us to making this podcast.

[00:11]We are far from experts, and we promise to do almost no research.

[00:14]All opinions are our own unless you disagree.

[00:16]Please sit back and enjoy Beck Did It Better.

[00:19]This is the 19th album on the list. It's Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly.

[00:23]Hey guys, I went down into Russ's mom's basement again.

[00:27]And this time there's a radio there, and I turned it on.

[00:29]I tried to make it about the mom, and I forgot it was records.

[00:31]I don't like when Rob mentions the word turning on in my mom's basement at all.

[00:35]In fact, we need to stay away from this.

[00:37]That might be the theme of this opener.

[00:40]Listen, I just want to tell my kids out there, if I'm dead and you're listening to this at my funeral,

[00:44]I'm not the proudest of this one.

[00:45]Okay, here we go. Here we go.

[00:47]Hey everybody, this is K-Rob K-R-O-B.

[00:50]I love K-Rob.

[00:52]We've got a song coming up now that's about me and K-Rob K-R-O-B.

[00:55]It's about turning off the multiplayer and just playing with your own joystick.

[00:59]This is a song about Jack and the Toys.

[01:02]Oh yeah!

[01:04]It's the official Jack and the Toys.

[01:05]I'm still up, but it's late night.

[01:12]Gonna give myself some delight.

[01:14]Kids and wife are asleep, so I'm gonna have to do it quietly.

[01:17]In the basement way, out of sight.

[01:20]Going to my favorite website.

[01:22]I don't want to get caught.

[01:23]One headphone in and one is off.

[01:26]Oh man, I just heard a door close.

[01:28]Or was that just in these poor noobs?

[01:33]I'm just showing that I love me.

[01:36]I gotta do it so I can sleep.

[01:41]Nature Zambian. That's a hang-up.

[01:45]Nature Zambian.

[01:46]But don't touch.

[01:50]When you want to hear about...

[01:52]The greatest albums of all time.

[01:55]I didn't know Rob had bars.

[01:56]But you're just too lazy to look it up online.

[01:59]Yeah, I'm pretty much like 100%

[02:01]If you want to hear about...

[02:02]Production quality, too.

[02:03]I've got the perfect podcast for you, Jack.

[02:10]Beck did it better.

[02:12]Alright, welcome all you Beckerheads out there.

[02:15]This is Beck did it better.

[02:18]That's what makes you guys laugh?

[02:19]That's my big joke today?

[02:20]We've got Russell in Minnesota.

[02:22]Russell, how are you doing today?

[02:23]I'm doing great, thankfully, for our dozens of listeners.

[02:27]This podcast is free!

[02:30]I've got Aaron out in California.

[02:33]Aaron, how are you doing?

[02:34]I think, is this podcast also 9 inches?

[02:36]I'm doing great, thank you.

[02:38]Maybe combined.

[02:39]Okay, so I'm rubbing off the board.

[02:43]I'm rubbing off the board that says

[02:44]we've done no dirty jokes.

[02:46]Matt, put that ruler away.

[02:48]We're back to zero.

[02:49]And then I said,

[02:50]and then I said,

[02:52]I'm rubbing off the board,

[02:52]and that made Aaron laugh, too.

[02:53]So, thanks a lot.

[02:54]Matt, in Minneapolis.

[02:56]How are you doing, Matt?

[02:57]Doing great, Rob.

[02:58]Thanks for having me.

[02:59]Alright, let's get right into it today.

[03:01]I don't have time to mess around.

[03:03]So, we guys, we have a Beck's to the Beck's line, okay?

[03:07]So, people are starting to send...

[03:08]Now, we have gotten two pictures of feet.

[03:10]I want to say, listen, we love it, okay?

[03:13]Aaron loves it, and he thinks it's great.

[03:15]I didn't think it was going to be that many male feet,

[03:18]although I don't know what exactly I expected.

[03:22]But it is a lot of male feet,

[03:23]and I got to say,

[03:24]y'all got fucked up feet out there.

[03:25]Alright, so,

[03:26]let's listen to this text that we got.

[03:28]What?

[03:28]Listen to a text?

[03:29]Yes, that's right.

[03:30]I have hired a new AI to read, okay?

[03:33]You sure it's not just these Amazonian women

[03:36]that have been showing up on my first dates,

[03:38]on my Bumble dates?

[03:39]I paid one of those women $5 on Fiverr to read this.

[03:43]Here we go.

[03:44]Hoping this is the Beck line.

[03:45]If so, a couple things.

[03:47]This is Steve from Minnesota.

[03:49]Maybe not that.

[03:50]Steve, but Steve.

[03:51]Nonetheless.

[03:52]One.

[03:53]Any soccer talk is too much soccer talk.

[03:56]My daughter plays soccer, and it's just the worst.

[03:59]Okay, so we got to pause it right there.

[04:02]Steve, his daughter plays soccer.

[04:05]He does not enjoy it.

[04:07]He said it's the worst.

[04:08]Not that, Steve.

[04:10]Okay, I didn't mention that.

[04:12]Two.

[04:12]Buying records, or anything for that matter,

[04:14]at best, buy is a great idea.

[04:16]Please help spread that to all your thousands of listeners.

[04:21]They've got no supply.

[04:22]I'll tell you this.

[04:23]I've looked.

[04:24]They've got no supply at Best Buy.

[04:26]So did he just try to pimp a Best Buy record store, or what?

[04:30]I want to be very clear.

[04:32]Beck did it better is not for sale.

[04:33]Okay?

[04:34]We will not bow down to these cheap in-text advertisements.

[04:38]Okay?

[04:39]If we would have gotten any other voicemails or any other text,

[04:41]I would be playing that.

[04:42]But you cannot play voicemails,

[04:45]or you cannot play text of pictures of feet,

[04:46]so we got nothing else that I can use on the podcast.

[04:48]But, yeah, so Best Buy,

[04:51]if you do want to give us a couple thousand dollars

[04:52]for all the downloads you're going to get,

[04:53]let me know.

[04:54]Please help spread that to all your thousands of listeners.

[04:57]Okay.

[04:57]Three.

[04:58]You should do a bid on

[05:00]if Ross can guess if a person is a wild player

[05:02]or a member of one of the bands you've done albums for on the pod.

[05:05]He absolutely hates the wild,

[05:08]and I love reminding him it's a sports team.

[05:10]Okay, so now I got to tell you this.

[05:12]I did try to do this,

[05:15]and so I looked up some wild players that had over 100 games,

[05:18]and I can tell you right now,

[05:21]this game is one of the worst ideas that any of our...

[05:23]Now, I have said before,

[05:24]our listeners are a bunch of dumb fucks.

[05:25]It continues.

[05:26]Because this is one of the worst ideas,

[05:28]because every single wild player I looked up was named, like,

[05:30]you know, Linderman...

[05:32]Linderman Syngard.

[05:34]And I was like, well, who's going to not know that's a wild player?

[05:38]Like, every single wild player is named after some Norwegian country.

[05:40]I don't even know who the wild are.

[05:42]What are we even talking about?

[05:43]Is this, like, a junior league soccer team,

[05:45]or what's going on?

[05:46]And then I was like, well, who are we going to do,

[05:48]like, members of the band?

[05:49]Like, am I going to quiz them on Stevie Wonder,

[05:51]his bass player,

[05:51]and then we're all going to laugh that he didn't know who that was?

[05:53]Like, it doesn't make any sense,

[05:54]because I can't say, like, Ringo,

[05:56]but I could say, like, Ringo Nygaard,

[05:58]and then you'd be like...

[05:59]I think Michael Henderson played bass for him,

[06:00]but not on Songs in the Key of Life.

[06:02]Oh, Jesus Christ.

[06:03]Okay, here we go.

[06:04]Fourth one.

[06:04]He absolutely hates the wild,

[06:06]and I love reminding him it's a sports team.

[06:08]Yeah, you already said that.

[06:09]Come on.

[06:09]Four.

[06:10]Love the pod.

[06:11]It's literally the thing I look forward to every week.

[06:14]Always puts a smile on my face.

[06:17]Oh!

[06:18]Lastly, here is a foot picture.

[06:20]Distribute.

[06:21]Just as necessary.

[06:21]Okay.

[06:23]So, I do want to say that I did not see that fourth one right away,

[06:28]so when he said it brings a smile on my face,

[06:29]I'm sorry that I called you a dumb fuck on the air.

[06:31]All right.

[06:32]That's our bad.

[06:33]All right.

[06:34]Rolling going, everybody.

[06:35]Steve, not that Steve, though.

[06:36]We are getting into rolling going.

[06:38]Let's do rolling going.

[06:39]Oh, my God.

[06:40]My kid just walked in and saw me doing this.

[06:42]It's humiliating.

[06:43]He did bring up his daughter's soccer being the worst.

[06:46]You guys have kids.

[06:47]Are your kids in sports?

[06:48]Is it fun to go to your kids' games?

[06:50]Matt, is it the worst?

[06:52]No, it's fun to watch your kids.

[06:56]It's the setup of it sometimes that drives you bonkers.

[07:00]Brandon, who was on a couple podcasts ago,

[07:03]he's got a son the same age as my son,

[07:06]and so your kids are growing up,

[07:08]and all you're trying to do is get them to share.

[07:10]Hey, help that kid out.

[07:13]Share.

[07:13]No, no, no, no, no.

[07:15]Don't hit that kid.

[07:16]Don't hit that kid.

[07:16]Share, you know?

[07:17]So, then we get on the soccer team,

[07:19]and all of a sudden,

[07:20]they throw,

[07:20]yellow team over here,

[07:22]green team over there,

[07:23]and all of a sudden,

[07:24]it's get the ball.

[07:24]No, take it away from him.

[07:26]What's going on?

[07:26]You know,

[07:26]and the kids are looking at you like,

[07:28]what are you talking about?

[07:29]You've been telling me to share the whole time.

[07:31]So, I don't know.

[07:32]I mean,

[07:33]it's good to have them out doing stuff,

[07:35]and if they like it,

[07:36]great.

[07:36]So, I don't know.

[07:37]Eric, Eric,

[07:38]to all those parents out there,

[07:41]say hi to your new daddy.

[07:43]That was a parenting tip from Matt.

[07:46]Oh, yeah.

[07:47]Not really a tip, I guess.

[07:49]No, it's a tip.

[07:50]I can't take it back now.

[07:51]Aaron, I was kind of curious.

[07:52]So, your son is going to grow up

[07:54]in a household with two musicians.

[07:56]Sure.

[07:57]As his parents.

[07:58]Is he going to be into sports,

[07:59]or are you guys going to be helicopter parents

[08:00]when it comes to like,

[08:01]he needs to play the trombone,

[08:03]or he needs to play the clarinet,

[08:04]or whatever the broken clarinet is.

[08:06]Like, what route is he going to take here?

[08:08]So, he's three and a half.

[08:09]He does enjoy sports in a very freeform way.

[08:13]So, our, he.

[08:14]Oh, my God.

[08:15]Is that the most Californian sentence

[08:16]you've ever heard in your life?

[08:17]He enjoys sports in a freeform way.

[08:20]Okay, this is the same state

[08:22]that brought us the hacky sack.

[08:24]Okay.

[08:24]So, like, I can't get him

[08:26]to like play in the backyard.

[08:27]He only likes to play in the driveway,

[08:29]which has resulted in multiple injuries

[08:31]over the summer.

[08:31]But yeah, his thing is like,

[08:33]oh, I like it when dad spins the football

[08:35]on the ground like Icky Woods style,

[08:36]and I run around.

[08:37]And then like, we do that for a little bit,

[08:39]and then he gets out the baseball tee

[08:41]and takes three hacks.

[08:42]And actually, he's got a pretty good swing now.

[08:43]And then he's done with that

[08:44]because then he wants the baseball tee

[08:46]to be a lightsaber.

[08:46]And then he'll pick up the Frisbee

[08:48]and throw that two or three times.

[08:49]He's like pretty good

[08:50]at it.

[08:51]But I don't think he's going to,

[08:53]you know, I don't think he's going to

[08:54]play a whole lot of team sports.

[08:56]Maybe he will.

[08:56]It's totally up to him.

[08:57]Definitely not going to be

[08:58]helicopter parents about learning music.

[09:00]We do have a piano,

[09:01]which I have a great story

[09:02]about to share another time.

[09:03]And I hope he will learn the piano,

[09:05]but I'm not going to,

[09:06]we're not going to push it.

[09:07]I would never play that piano.

[09:08]I'd have to walk through

[09:09]all those crumbs to get there.

[09:10]I would never sign up for that.

[09:11]I'll tell you what,

[09:13]I think Matt's,

[09:13]I think Aaron's child

[09:14]might have a good future

[09:15]in like interpretive dance

[09:16]by the sound of it.

[09:17]He is a very,

[09:18]he's a very interesting dancer.

[09:20]Yeah.

[09:21]Rob, don't your daughter swim?

[09:22]So do you go to the pool?

[09:24]Do you always smell like chlorine?

[09:25]Are you the dad

[09:25]who always smells like chlorine?

[09:26]Or what's your,

[09:27]what's your sports parenting style?

[09:29]No, going to the pool in New York

[09:30]is really cool

[09:30]because it combines everything

[09:31]you love about New York City

[09:33]in that it's super crowded.

[09:34]Everything is out of the city.

[09:36]So you got to take a train

[09:37]to fucking Nowhereville.

[09:38]And then three,

[09:39]it's super hot.

[09:40]And then your kid swims

[09:41]and literally it's over in 30 seconds.

[09:42]And you've been there all day

[09:43]and you watch your kid swim

[09:44]for 30 seconds.

[09:45]She gets like third

[09:45]and you have to be like,

[09:46]oh, good job.

[09:47]I'm so proud of you.

[09:47]Not really.

[09:48]That's the same time you got.

[09:49]And I know

[09:49]because I'm keeping track

[09:50]of it on a spreadsheet.

[09:51]So 30 seconds,

[09:52]that sounds about the same time

[09:53]you'd spend on K-Rob

[09:54]doing whatever business

[09:55]you need to take care of

[09:56]before you go to sleep, right?

[09:57]This, you know,

[09:59]I'll tell you,

[09:59]this song did take multiple tracks.

[10:00]So it took me more

[10:01]like 10 minutes this time.

[10:02]And I'm ignoring

[10:04]what you're trying

[10:05]to bait me into.

[10:06]All right.

[10:08]So what were we talking about?

[10:10]Did we roll and go on?

[10:12]I think we're about to roll and go on.

[10:13]Who's that I call on

[10:14]where they said something about sports?

[10:16]What is going?

[10:18]Did I call?

[10:19]We haven't actually started

[10:20]rolling going yet.

[10:20]Oh, my God.

[10:21]I haven't started rolling going.

[10:22]I was like, I'm totally lost.

[10:23]I was like, why did

[10:24]how do we start?

[10:24]We got into this

[10:25]as a result of our text from Steve.

[10:26]But the other Steve.

[10:27]That's right.

[10:28]It's a Bex.

[10:30]I already forgot

[10:31]about our dumb shit listeners.

[10:32]It's time to see

[10:37]what everybody's up to.

[10:38]It's time for rolling going.

[10:42]Oh, yeah.

[10:45]Yeah.

[10:46]Enough content from the listeners.

[10:47]It's time to listen

[10:47]to that content

[10:48]that I made up.

[10:48]I made that everybody loves.

[10:49]All right.

[10:50]Rolling going.

[10:51]Aaron, how's it rolling going with you?

[10:53]It's been a week of ups and downs for me,

[10:56]I'd say.

[10:56]So I would say you buy a pogo stick in bed,

[11:01]bought a pogo stick.

[11:02]I've been a good week.

[11:04]I feel good.

[11:04]I always feel good talking to you guys about music.

[11:07]I'm happy to be here on Tuesday of this week.

[11:11]I cooked a nine pound brisket.

[11:13]First time in my life.

[11:14]I've cooked a whole brisket

[11:15]and we made some deliveries to friends

[11:17]who celebrate.

[11:18]I celebrate Hanukkah

[11:19]and also like brisket.

[11:20]So I felt good about that.

[11:21]Nice.

[11:21]How did you cook the brisket?

[11:22]I'm interested.

[11:23]Yeah.

[11:24]Yeah.

[11:24]So, well,

[11:25]I don't have a pan big enough for this.

[11:27]So I braised it in beer

[11:29]and some spices and such.

[11:32]Michael W. Twitty,

[11:34]who has come up on this podcast before,

[11:35]has a really good recipe

[11:39]for a West African inspired brisket.

[11:43]So I kind of riffed on that a little bit.

[11:44]Some ginger, some spices.

[11:45]But I didn't have,

[11:47]I don't have a pan big enough

[11:48]for a nine pound brisket.

[11:49]So I did have to buy

[11:50]a disposable roasting pan this time.

[11:52]I have to know, Aaron,

[11:53]when you guys deliver this brisket,

[11:55]there's no chance you and your wife

[11:57]don't do some sort of caroling

[11:58]outside the house, right?

[11:59]Oh, that would have been a good idea.

[12:01]We did.

[12:02]It's COVID, man.

[12:03]You just drop it off at the door

[12:04]and then you run back to your car.

[12:05]We didn't, we didn't do any caroling.

[12:06]We should have.

[12:07]And then the rats stream out of Aaron's house.

[12:09]Somebody drops it on his front step

[12:11]and the rats stream out and grab it.

[12:13]He tries to come out

[12:14]and pull it from him there.

[12:15]Getting a tug of war with Aaron

[12:17]on this piece of food.

[12:18]It pulls in a nice strand.

[12:18]Because it's so tender.

[12:19]Yeah.

[12:19]So I was proud of my brisket.

[12:21]I felt good about my brisket.

[12:22]And then yesterday,

[12:23]I'm fairly certain I broke my toe

[12:25]in my garage doing yoga.

[12:28]So I don't know what happened.

[12:30]I was like.

[12:30]Now, what positions were you going from

[12:32]where you would break your toe?

[12:33]Like, I don't understand.

[12:34]How are you moving that fast

[12:35]and you break your toe?

[12:35]I wasn't even started yet.

[12:37]I was like walking to set up

[12:38]and I stubbed it

[12:39]and I think it's probably broken.

[12:41]You don't do the yoga in the tent.

[12:42]You move outside of the tent

[12:44]for the yoga, right?

[12:45]Yeah.

[12:45]Are you trying to f*** yourself?

[12:46]Oh, no.

[12:48]No, that's got to be.

[12:49]Is that what you call yoga?

[12:50]That's got to go.

[12:51]What happened?

[12:53]What is happening?

[12:54]That's got to go.

[12:55]What?

[12:56]I'm asking if you were trying

[12:57]to f*** yourself.

[12:58]No, I was not.

[12:59]Then you hit your toe on the ground

[13:01]and that's what stubbed your toe.

[13:02]I just think it was a very like

[13:04]almost 41-year-old move

[13:06]of just like,

[13:06]oh, I'm walking on the yoga mat

[13:08]and now my toe hurts super bad

[13:09]and like today it's bright red

[13:11]and black and blue.

[13:12]So what are you picturing?

[13:13]So he didn't say no.

[13:14]I want to point out

[13:15]he did not say no.

[13:16]And he didn't say no

[13:18]and he was nodding yes

[13:19]during that whole time.

[13:20]He was like big nods

[13:21]like all the way up and down.

[13:22]Okay, we get it, Aaron.

[13:23]Now he's winking at us.

[13:24]I don't like that.

[13:25]Okay, rolling, going.

[13:27]Matt, how's it going with you?

[13:28]Good, good.

[13:29]You know, being home,

[13:31]being in the deep, dark, cold

[13:33]of Minnesota,

[13:34]it's turned into Netflix season for me.

[13:37]So there's been a lot of good stuff

[13:39]on Netflix.

[13:39]There's a lot of,

[13:40]you know, like remember

[13:42]when you were younger

[13:43]and it would be Saturday afternoon

[13:44]and you could watch like a blood sport

[13:47]on Channel 9

[13:48]and it was just like great.

[13:49]Kumite, Kumite, Kumite.

[13:50]Just horrible.

[13:51]Kumite, Kumite.

[13:52]You are next.

[13:53]Yeah.

[13:53]But there'd be Rambo,

[13:55]all those movies

[13:55]that were just horribly made

[13:57]but they were so good

[13:59]and you just had to watch them.

[14:00]Netflix has about 38 of them now

[14:03]and they got a couple French ones

[14:04]and a couple Israeli ones

[14:05]and so I've just been hammering

[14:07]the cheesy, horrible,

[14:10]shoot-em-up movies

[14:12]and they're great.

[14:12]But the best thing I've seen so far

[14:15]is on season two,

[14:17]a show called

[14:18]Song Explorer.

[14:19]It started out as a podcast.

[14:22]The guy named,

[14:23]and I'm going to butcher this

[14:24]and I'm going to apologize.

[14:25]What's that?

[14:26]Explorer or Exploder?

[14:28]Exploder.

[14:29]Well, it is Exploder, isn't it?

[14:31]Yeah, Rob with the wind.

[14:33]Boom, baby.

[14:34]Rob, so smart.

[14:35]That's some smart shit.

[14:36]Matt might be confusing

[14:38]his Netflix account

[14:39]with his YouPorn account

[14:40]or whatever it is.

[14:41]You know, I've watched

[14:45]all two seasons of this.

[14:45]I like how he says

[14:46]or whatever it is.

[14:48]YouPorn.com slash Mills

[14:50]or whatever it is.

[14:51]I don't know.

[14:51]You know, whatever.

[14:52]I don't know Matt's preferences.

[14:54]Yeah.

[14:55]I've watched two seasons of this

[14:57]and I've never gotten past

[14:58]the X-P-L-O-W

[15:00]on the title

[15:01]and it's Exploder.

[15:02]The guy's name is

[15:04]Rishkesh Hereway.

[15:06]I never get past

[15:07]the opening credits either.

[15:09]Yeah.

[15:09]I mean, if they're there

[15:11]to buy a house,

[15:12]why is the wife

[15:13]looking at the bathroom

[15:14]so the real estate agent

[15:15]and the husband

[15:15]stay on the bedroom?

[15:16]It makes no sense.

[15:16]You know what I mean?

[15:17]I don't know.

[15:18]I am not doing this thing

[15:21]by the way

[15:22]where I talk about

[15:22]different kinds of pornography

[15:23]and I get so awkward

[15:25]every time.

[15:25]I do not like it.

[15:26]All right.

[15:27]So Matt, you were saying?

[15:28]Just think by episode 500

[15:31]what Rob's going to be talking about

[15:32]when it comes to his preferences.

[15:34]Oh boy.

[15:35]Go ahead, Matt.

[15:38]We're so sorry.

[15:38]Matt gets mad.

[15:40]Matt's not like Aaron.

[15:40]He's mad that we talked over him.

[15:41]Go ahead, Matt.

[15:42]We want to hear about your show.

[15:43]I just want to get through this.

[15:45]I just want to be done

[15:46]with my role in going.

[15:47]He's talking about

[15:48]sitting listening to you guys

[15:49]talk about Kendrick Lamar.

[15:51]All right.

[15:52]We know that's a lie

[15:53]but go ahead.

[15:53]All right.

[15:54]So season two's got

[15:56]The Killers,

[15:57]When You Were Young

[15:58]and Nine Inch Nails,

[15:59]Hurt

[16:00]and a couple other songs

[16:01]I don't know

[16:01]but the guy's name

[16:05]I really apologize

[16:06]for not getting it right

[16:07]because he's phenomenal

[16:08]what he does.

[16:09]Harish Keshe,

[16:10]hear away.

[16:11]Harish Keshe started out

[16:12]having a podcast

[16:13]and he does this huge deep dive

[16:16]into these songs.

[16:16]He gets like

[16:17]the original recording

[16:18]and he gets them

[16:19]broke down

[16:20]you know

[16:21]to every single layer

[16:22]and he brings in

[16:23]every member of the band

[16:24]and they talk about

[16:25]what they were thinking

[16:26]what you know

[16:26]what does this mean

[16:27]how'd they come up

[16:28]with this stuff

[16:28]and it's just phenomenal.

[16:29]It's like 20 minutes

[16:30]of breaking it down

[16:31]and then you hear the song

[16:32]out of it

[16:33]and it's just great.

[16:34]So you know

[16:35]I just got an email

[16:36]from somebody named

[16:37]Harish Keshe more so

[16:38]and he says

[16:39]hey just heard your

[16:40]RESPC for Feet

[16:42]and I want to talk to you

[16:43]for a show on Netflix.

[16:44]See you guys later.

[16:45]I'm out of here.

[16:46]He's doing season four

[16:48]as well.

[16:48]It's all K-Rob.

[16:50]We knew we were going

[16:51]to lose Rob eventually.

[16:51]He's going to the big leagues.

[16:54]We're just riding his wave.

[16:55]We're just riding his coattails.

[16:56]So Matt why do you enjoy

[16:56]this show so much?

[16:57]I think you know

[16:59]you hear a song

[17:01]and it means something to you.

[17:03]Sometimes it's very superficial.

[17:07]Sometimes it's like

[17:08]oh that's a cool song.

[17:09]Sometimes it's really deep

[17:10]and the more you hear it

[17:11]the more you kind of

[17:12]dig into it.

[17:13]I wasn't a big

[17:14]Nine Inch Nails guy.

[17:16]I think we talked about it.

[17:17]I was probably 12 or 13

[17:18]when it came out

[17:19]and I was more scared of it

[17:21]than anything

[17:22]but you've got

[17:23]all of a sudden

[17:26]Trent Reznor

[17:27]is breaking down Hurt

[17:28]which is the last song

[17:30]in his album.

[17:30]We're going to get to it.

[17:31]It's a phenomenal album.

[17:32]I think it's about 50

[17:33]on the list now

[17:34]and it's just

[17:36]you hear

[17:37]where he came from

[17:39]basically making music

[17:40]on his bed

[17:41]when he was a teenager

[17:42]hanging out with nobody

[17:43]and all of a sudden

[17:44]he's this huge celebrity

[17:46]and it's just cool

[17:48]to kind of see the arc

[17:49]of how these people

[17:50]come up with music

[17:51]and you know

[17:52]half of them are

[17:53]hey we didn't know

[17:54]this was going to be anything

[17:55]and all of a sudden

[17:56]this is huge success

[17:57]and so how they handle it

[17:58]and what it means to them

[17:59]now 20 years later

[18:00]and so it's just

[18:02]it's just a cool thing.

[18:03]If you know the songs

[18:04]it's great.

[18:05]I just have to say this

[18:06]if there's

[18:07]if there's

[18:07]and eventually

[18:08]we're going to be

[18:08]on a Netflix show

[18:09]where they break down

[18:10]the world's most popular podcasts

[18:11]and we have to go on there

[18:13]and talk about a certain episode

[18:14]and this is the episode

[18:14]we have to talk about.

[18:15]It's a sad fucking world.

[18:16]I'm going to throw you guys

[18:17]under the bus

[18:18]so fucking fast

[18:19]it's going to make your head spin.

[18:20]What do you mean?

[18:21]Oh, oh.

[18:21]You just

[18:22]listen I'm going to see that

[18:24]as a vehicle for my own glory

[18:25]and I'm going to be like

[18:25]yeah these shitheads

[18:26]I had to tell them

[18:27]like we wrote down

[18:27]all the jokes for them

[18:28]like you know.

[18:29]Rob is the ghost writer

[18:31]for all of our ghosts.

[18:32]You mentioned like

[18:33]connecting with the song.

[18:34]I'm kind of curious

[18:34]like we've made it

[18:35]quite a few albums in

[18:36]we're probably 25 albums in

[18:38]with the

[18:38]with the reset of the list

[18:40]and everything like that.

[18:41]Is there a certain song

[18:42]that you guys heard

[18:43]that really connected with you

[18:44]or just kind of

[18:45]connected with you

[18:46]in a way that you didn't think

[18:47]it was going to

[18:48]happen that you're going to

[18:49]always remember as part of

[18:50]this first few months

[18:51]of this podcast?

[18:51]I keep going back to

[18:54]Wouldn't It Be Nice

[18:55]by the Beach Boys

[18:56]on Pet Sound.

[18:57]I don't know why

[18:58]you know

[18:59]but listening to that album

[19:01]three or four times

[19:02]during that week

[19:02]that we did it

[19:03]that song

[19:05]has stuck with me

[19:06]I think more than

[19:07]more than others

[19:08]there's been a couple

[19:09]other ones

[19:09]but that's the one

[19:10]that comes

[19:11]to mind right away.

[19:12]I'll tell you for me

[19:13]it's anytime I hear

[19:14]Kanye West from now on

[19:15]I'm going to think of this podcast

[19:16]because I did not listen to

[19:18]any beforehand

[19:18]and now I just

[19:19]you know

[19:20]from the album

[19:21]to his Christmas one

[19:23]which I thought was just

[19:23]one of the greatest songs

[19:24]I've ever heard in my life

[19:25]I just

[19:25]he's right in my wheelhouse

[19:27]I realize.

[19:28]Aaron how about you?

[19:29]Yeah I think for me

[19:31]the first one that comes to mind

[19:33]is Aretha's cover

[19:34]of A Change Is Gonna Come

[19:35]because

[19:35]I sort of knew that album

[19:37]and I know that song

[19:38]really well.

[19:38]I was so curious

[19:38]of what Aaron was going to say

[19:39]I was like

[19:40]I wonder how deep

[19:40]this dive is going to be.

[19:41]It's not that

[19:42]that's not that deep

[19:43]but it's the last

[19:44]that's the last track

[19:45]on that album

[19:46]and I'll be honest

[19:47]I didn't

[19:48]I didn't always get there

[19:49]when I had heard that album

[19:49]and listening to her say

[19:51]I had an old friend

[19:52]You just watched the intros

[19:53]who once said this thing

[19:53]yeah I just watched the intros

[19:55]so yeah I was not

[19:57]as familiar with her version

[19:58]as I was with Sam's

[19:59]Otis or Baby Huey

[20:01]so that's the one

[20:02]that sticks out to me.

[20:03]See for me

[20:04]I always scrub forward

[20:05]to the end

[20:05]so I hear stuff like that.

[20:07]Alright.

[20:08]You made a very

[20:09]inappropriate hand gesture

[20:10]when you did a scrub there Rob.

[20:12]Russell what's the song?

[20:13]That was way inappropriate

[20:14]you gotta

[20:14]you gotta put that camera up

[20:15]no more hand gestures

[20:16]from Rob

[20:17]when he's using the phrase

[20:18]scrub.

[20:18]Aaron shut up for a second

[20:19]Russell what's the song

[20:20]that you care about?

[20:22]I've got two

[20:24]I think one is definitely

[20:25]the opening track

[20:26]on the Kanye album

[20:27]we just listened to

[20:28]that just

[20:29]I listened to it

[20:30]so many times

[20:31]I loved it

[20:31]but the other one

[20:32]is on a track

[20:33]we recorded

[20:34]and we never got to talk about

[20:35]it was the white album

[20:36]I think Blackbird

[20:37]by the Beatles

[20:38]you guys

[20:39]you know that song

[20:40]obviously

[20:41]but that song

[20:41]is just so simple

[20:42]and beautiful

[20:43]so going through the quest

[20:44]that's been one of my favorites

[20:45]it's just

[20:45]very simplistic

[20:47]but very beautiful

[20:48]and touching

[20:48]Russ rolling going

[20:50]how's it going with you?

[20:51]It's going great Rob

[20:53]we're kind of in that moment

[20:54]of you know

[20:55]we're just getting past

[20:56]the holidays

[20:56]but we're still

[20:57]having you know

[20:58]Christmas cards coming in

[20:59]or holiday cards

[21:00]coming in from your friends

[21:01]maybe you're getting

[21:02]something in the mail

[21:03]from someone

[21:03]and I got an amazing gift

[21:05]from a friend this week

[21:06]and I figured I needed

[21:07]to share it with you guys

[21:08]so

[21:10]he's taking his belt off

[21:11]I

[21:12]sorry

[21:14]did I need to give you guys

[21:15]warning on that

[21:16]or not?

[21:17]Yeah

[21:18]this friend

[21:18]okay I'll put it back

[21:19]hold on I'll put it back on

[21:21]so I did

[21:23]I did get a really cool gift

[21:24]from one of my coworkers

[21:25]she sent me a Star Wars

[21:26]Chia Pet

[21:27]and I was like

[21:28]oh this is very cool

[21:29]it's like a Yoda Chia Pet

[21:30]and at least I can claim

[21:32]if I can keep this

[21:33]Chia Pet alive

[21:34]like I've grown up

[21:35]to plants

[21:36]so if I get to plants

[21:38]then I can get to animals

[21:39]then I can maybe have

[21:40]a human relationship

[21:40]at some point

[21:41]but

[21:42]my favorite gifts

[21:44]that I got

[21:44]were from a good friend of mine

[21:45]named Aaron

[21:46]out in the Oakland area

[21:48]and he sent me two records

[21:49]to add to my collection

[21:50]he sent me a very nice note

[21:52]and in my

[21:53]what he added to my collection

[21:54]was first

[21:55]probably my favorite

[21:57]musician ever

[21:58]we got Johnny Cash

[21:59]live at San Quentin

[22:01]which Aaron sent to me

[22:02]from his personal collection

[22:04]which is like extra special

[22:05]very very good

[22:06]so thank you Aaron

[22:07]so wait a minute

[22:08]Aaron has talked about

[22:08]how he doesn't have a lot of space

[22:09]because he lives in a little

[22:10]dollhouse

[22:11]but

[22:11]is he just

[22:12]regifting stuff that he has?

[22:14]one of the two things

[22:16]he sent me

[22:16]was from his collection

[22:17]but

[22:18]like I've got some old sheets

[22:20]I've got old sheets

[22:21]that we don't use anymore

[22:22]can I send you those too?

[22:23]like I

[22:23]is that a gift?

[22:24]it's not like

[22:26]you sent me a scratched up

[22:27]cocktail album

[22:28]or whatever that

[22:28]what a Kokomo is

[22:30]he sent me Johnny Cash

[22:31]live at San Quentin

[22:33]so

[22:33]that is pretty awesome

[22:34]so thank you Aaron

[22:35]yeah man

[22:36]but he also sent me

[22:37]maybe you guys have heard

[22:38]of this one

[22:38]Sonny Rollins

[22:40]it's called

[22:40]Sexaphone Colossus

[22:42]have you guys heard of

[22:45]Sexaphone Colossus?

[22:46]I have not

[22:47]I didn't just hear

[22:48]about it Russell

[22:48]when you wanted songs

[22:49]to play for a woman

[22:50]in the car

[22:51]for jazz

[22:53]you wanted recommendations

[22:54]so you came to the three

[22:55]smartest

[22:56]and sexiest guys

[22:57]you know

[22:58]us

[22:58]and you said

[22:59]please

[23:00]I'm going to be on a date

[23:01]I need some jazz

[23:02]to look to play in the car

[23:03]I recommended

[23:04]Sexaphone Colossus for you

[23:05]because it doesn't

[23:06]isn't that the one

[23:06]that opens with

[23:07]St. Thomas

[23:08]is that the one?

[23:08]yeah Rob

[23:10]you're such a jazz head

[23:11]you've tried to hide it

[23:12]you totally are

[23:12]oh I jazz so hard

[23:14]so I'm gonna

[23:16]I'm gonna

[23:17]zero man

[23:18]it's

[23:18]I'm gonna take this

[23:19]I'm gonna take this album Aaron

[23:21]and I might not play

[23:22]the music in my car

[23:23]but I'm at least

[23:24]gonna set it over

[23:25]the Herbie Mann albums

[23:26]that are still in my backseat

[23:27]so next time

[23:28]a lady gets in my car

[23:30]she might not hear jazz

[23:31]she might hear something else

[23:32]like we're gonna be listening

[23:33]to the Beck Did It Better pod

[23:34]but at least

[23:35]Sexaphone Colossus

[23:37]will be in the backseat

[23:38]I think you're gonna have to

[23:39]pull an Aaron

[23:39]and put the record player

[23:40]in the front seat

[23:41]and then put your date

[23:42]in the backseat

[23:42]and be like

[23:44]you know if this goes well enough

[23:45]someday you might move up

[23:46]to the front seat

[23:47]Matt did you get

[23:48]any gifts for the holidays

[23:49]or not?

[23:49]well I too

[23:51]received a couple

[23:52]um

[23:53]records

[23:54]from out in Oakland

[23:55]somewhere

[23:56]I think

[23:57]I think from our good buddy Aaron

[23:58]and I finally got

[24:00]my first

[24:01]copy

[24:01]of Push Push

[24:03]Push Push

[24:04]and so

[24:05]I

[24:05]I've been playing it

[24:06]a couple times

[24:07]I've got the album

[24:09]I can't reach it here

[24:10]but it's

[24:11]prominently displayed

[24:12]I gotta put it away

[24:13]when my kids come around

[24:14]I don't want them

[24:15]looking at that

[24:16]but you know

[24:16]I don't want them

[24:18]but no

[24:18]so Rosie

[24:19]I appreciate it

[24:21]it's awesome

[24:22]great gift

[24:22]I love you guys

[24:23]and I sent Rob a gift too

[24:24]but he's saving it for Christmas

[24:26]so we'll do that on the next episode

[24:27]you guys are sick

[24:28]opening gifts early

[24:29]that's a sickness

[24:29]okay

[24:31]I'm gonna open it

[24:32]while at the same time

[24:33]yelling at my kids

[24:33]just like every Christmas

[24:34]but I'm gonna get

[24:35]I'll have to get serious

[24:36]for a moment

[24:37]and Rob can edit this out

[24:38]but this has been a highlight

[24:39]of my 2020

[24:39]I look forward to this

[24:40]every time we chat

[24:41]so I just wanted to show

[24:42]my appreciation

[24:43]cheers to that

[24:45]this podcast has been

[24:46]one of the worst decisions

[24:47]I've made in my entire life

[24:47]all right

[24:51]no I'm just kidding

[24:53]actually I

[24:53]you know

[24:54]of course I love you guys

[24:55]I think this has been

[24:56]so fun to be able

[24:57]to talk with you

[24:57]and that brings me

[24:58]to my rolling going

[24:59]thanks for asking

[25:00]an introduction

[25:01]of a brand new segment

[25:03]and I want to remind you

[25:04]that I did say

[25:04]I love you guys

[25:06]you know what time it is

[25:09]it's time to make fun

[25:12]of Aaron

[25:13]oh yeah

[25:15]don't worry

[25:16]he likes it

[25:17]I don't own a microwave

[25:22]all right

[25:23]so let's get into

[25:24]the section

[25:25]where we make fun of Aaron

[25:26]this is where I

[25:27]I find stuff that

[25:28]it was Aaron

[25:29]somehow now

[25:29]Aaron has a habit

[25:30]of talking under us

[25:31]okay we definitely

[25:32]don't talk over Aaron

[25:33]but he does try to talk

[25:34]under us

[25:34]all the edits I said

[25:36]to Rob are about

[25:37]hey Aaron's talking under us

[25:38]can you just mute him

[25:39]out of this

[25:39]yeah we need to

[25:40]and he just will talk

[25:41]and talk

[25:42]and we're you know

[25:42]Russell and I have

[25:43]a very normal conversation

[25:44]definitely not trying

[25:45]to talk over him

[25:45]and Matt stares at us

[25:47]so here's the

[25:47]thing is that

[25:48]I have picked up

[25:49]something from last week

[25:50]that Aaron said

[25:51]that I want to make

[25:51]fun of him for

[25:52]so this is again

[25:53]the famous segment

[25:54]make fun of Aaron

[25:55]all right

[25:56]here is what I have to say

[25:58]now

[25:58]I just want to tell everybody

[26:00]I'm ostensibly the host

[26:01]of this podcast

[26:02]okay so I'm trying

[26:03]to get the podcast

[26:04]we're trying to do

[26:04]funny things

[26:05]we are trying to talk

[26:06]about fun things

[26:07]we are you know

[26:07]sometimes it's tough

[26:08]with some of the material

[26:09]we're working with

[26:10]or whatever

[26:10]but we are trying

[26:11]to have a good time

[26:12]so we on the

[26:13]this is for the

[26:14]Christmas episode

[26:15]where we were talking

[26:17]about the song

[26:17]Christmas Rappin

[26:18]now just to give you

[26:19]an idea

[26:19]I made the very

[26:20]classic joke of

[26:21]oh Christmas

[26:21]Rappin paper

[26:22]okay we told the story

[26:24]about when Russ

[26:25]almost got in a fight

[26:25]at Carlton

[26:26]because he said

[26:27]he went there

[26:27]for some reason

[26:28]nobody understands why

[26:29]this is what Aaron's

[26:31]response when we were

[26:32]talking about Curtis Blow

[26:33]that's what I was

[26:34]going to say Aaron

[26:35]you stepped right

[26:35]on what I was going

[26:36]to say

[26:36]I'm also pretty certain

[26:38]Curtis Blow just had

[26:38]a heart transplant

[26:39]okay so

[26:40]what are we supposed

[26:43]to do with that

[26:44]what are we supposed

[26:45]to do with that

[26:45]information

[26:46]I think we

[26:47]were going to take

[26:48]all of our podcast

[26:49]all the money we've

[26:50]made from the podcast

[26:51]and put it towards

[26:51]like a GoFundMe

[26:52]to get it back up

[26:53]back on shape

[26:54]and we've sent him

[26:55]zero dollars so far

[26:56]so good luck Curtis

[26:57]with that new heart

[26:58]I mean I know

[26:59]we're talking about

[27:00]the chia pet

[27:00]but transplants

[27:01]now I've heard

[27:02]about everything

[27:03]it's like okay

[27:05]let's talk about

[27:06]fun things

[27:06]well Curtis Blow

[27:07]did just have a heart

[27:08]transplant

[27:08]it reminds me of

[27:09]the fragility of

[27:10]human life in general

[27:11]okay well now

[27:14]on to Jingle Bell Rock

[27:15]Jingle Bell Rock

[27:17]and I had to like

[27:19]edit

[27:19]and I really did

[27:20]I had to cut out

[27:21]both myself

[27:22]and Russell

[27:23]because we were both

[27:23]talking over him

[27:24]at that point

[27:24]so I had to silence it

[27:25]make the mp3

[27:27]put it in

[27:27]redo it

[27:28]it's a mess

[27:29]so that was

[27:30]making fun of Aaron

[27:31]did Aaron talking

[27:32]under us

[27:33]make the original

[27:34]podcast or not

[27:36]no absolutely not

[27:36]I cut him off

[27:37]I get annoyed

[27:38]when Aaron talks

[27:39]under us like that

[27:40]all the time

[27:40]yeah he's got to

[27:40]cut it out

[27:41]when he hears us

[27:42]talking he's a

[27:42]zip it

[27:43]all right

[27:44]I also want to say

[27:46]I have to say

[27:47]I have an apology

[27:47]okay

[27:48]and I don't do this

[27:49]very often

[27:50]because I do

[27:50]it is my standard

[27:51]being

[27:53]it is my

[27:53]who I am

[27:54]it is my

[27:54]job

[27:55]doesn't rob

[27:55]something off

[27:56]off schedule

[27:57]it worries me

[27:57]it's going to

[27:58]involve me

[27:58]so I just

[27:59]I just pray

[27:59]and I drink

[28:00]and I try to get

[28:01]through it

[28:01]I need to apologize

[28:02]for something

[28:03]because I went

[28:03]on and on

[28:04]as I was editing

[28:05]the Christmas episode

[28:06]I noticed that

[28:07]I kept referring to

[28:08]Mariah's Carrie

[28:09]all I want for Christmas

[28:10]is you

[28:11]as the horniest

[28:13]Christmas song

[28:15]that there was

[28:16]now at no point

[28:17]in that song

[28:17]does she say

[28:18]anything horny

[28:19]okay

[28:20]it is actually

[28:20]literally a very sweet

[28:21]song of I want

[28:22]a Christmas

[28:22]I don't need

[28:23]anything else

[28:24]I just want you

[28:24]reflection on the album

[28:25]and I literally

[28:26]I just kept saying

[28:27]over and over

[28:27]if you listen to the episode

[28:28]I'm like it's so horny

[28:29]and you guys are like

[28:30]so then afterwards

[28:33]so a little look

[28:34]behind the scenes here

[28:35]is after we get done

[28:36]talking on the podcast

[28:37]we then talk to each other

[28:38]for about two hours

[28:39]because our family

[28:42]first thing you went

[28:42]right hey oh guys

[28:43]we got to see this

[28:44]yeah so literally

[28:45]I pull up the

[28:46]video

[28:46]I was like

[28:47]this video was so hot

[28:48]when I was in middle school

[28:49]like I just thought

[28:50]this is

[28:50]she was so attractive

[28:51]it was the hottest video

[28:52]so we watched

[28:53]the original Mariah Carey

[28:55]all I want for you

[28:55]is Christmas

[28:56]it has to be

[28:58]one of the least

[28:58]sexual videos

[28:59]ever created

[29:00]in the history of MTV

[29:01]she's like wearing

[29:04]a snowmobile suit

[29:05]that video with

[29:06]Dire Straits

[29:07]where they're the

[29:08]animated guys

[29:09]are is more sexy

[29:10]than this Mariah Carey

[29:11]video where they're

[29:12]in the

[29:12]money for nothing

[29:13]yeah where she is

[29:14]in the

[29:14]she is literally

[29:15]the whole time

[29:16]in a

[29:17]not form-fitting

[29:18]it's like a form

[29:19]like obscuring

[29:22]snowmobile suit

[29:24]it's red

[29:25]somebody is driving

[29:25]an old ass

[29:26]like 1970s

[29:27]snowmobile around

[29:28]and that's it

[29:29]there is no sexy

[29:30]part of the video

[29:31]there's nothing

[29:32]exciting happening

[29:32]but the whole time

[29:33]I was like so sexy

[29:35]the guys are like

[29:35]oh okay

[29:36]that sounds good

[29:36]no idea

[29:37]I don't know

[29:38]what I was going

[29:38]through at that time

[29:39]in middle school

[29:40]where I was watching

[29:40]that video

[29:41]who can imagine

[29:42]what I was doing

[29:42]in middle school

[29:43]when I was watching

[29:44]that video

[29:44]okay nobody can

[29:45]imagine it

[29:46]imagine not

[29:47]going to imagine

[29:47]what you were doing

[29:48]watching that video

[29:48]I don't know

[29:50]how would you have

[29:51]I don't know

[29:52]you guys that have

[29:52]sons good luck

[29:53]because they might

[29:54]end up like me

[29:54]all right

[29:55]so that is it

[29:57]for my rolling

[29:57]going

[29:58]let's get into

[29:59]the album

[30:00]we are talking

[30:01]about

[30:02]Kendrick Lamar

[30:03]to Pimp a Butterfly

[30:04]this came out

[30:05]in 2015

[30:06]it's kind of

[30:07]one of the big

[30:08]albums of

[30:09]conscientious hip-hop

[30:10]that we're going

[30:10]to talk about

[30:11]this album

[30:12]when it came out

[30:12]debuted at number

[30:13]one on the charts

[30:14]this was a

[30:15]juggernaut

[30:16]at the

[30:17]Grammys

[30:17]it had a

[30:18]total of

[30:18]seven nominations

[30:19]it ended up

[30:20]winning for

[30:21]album of the

[30:22]year and

[30:22]best rap album

[30:23]in 2015

[30:24]and Kendrick

[30:26]Lamar at the

[30:26]same time

[30:27]not related to

[30:28]this album

[30:28]had four other

[30:29]nominations from

[30:30]different collaborations

[30:31]that aren't on

[30:32]this album

[30:32]so at that

[30:33]Grammy ceremony

[30:34]he was up for

[30:35]11 Grammys

[30:36]which is wild

[30:36]now the way

[30:38]this album came

[30:38]out is that

[30:39]he was planning

[30:40]for his third

[30:40]album

[30:41]he then

[30:42]when he

[30:42]took a trip

[30:43]to South Africa

[30:44]and he said

[30:45]that it made

[30:46]such a connection

[30:46]with him

[30:47]that he literally

[30:47]scrapped

[30:48]he threw away

[30:49]two albums

[30:49]worth of music

[30:50]and his quote is

[30:51]I felt like I

[30:52]belonged in Africa

[30:52]I saw all the

[30:53]things I wasn't

[30:54]taught

[30:54]probably one of

[30:55]the hardest

[30:55]things to do

[30:55]is put together

[30:56]a concept of

[30:57]how beautiful

[30:58]a place can be

[30:58]and tell a

[30:59]person this

[30:59]while they're

[31:00]still in the

[31:00]ghettos of

[31:01]Compton

[31:01]I wanted to

[31:02]put that

[31:02]experience into

[31:03]music

[31:03]so you're kind of

[31:04]getting an idea

[31:04]of what this

[31:05]album is like

[31:05]overall

[31:06]and some of

[31:07]the themes

[31:07]of the album

[31:08]and I was

[31:08]blown away

[31:09]by this

[31:09]is that

[31:10]I think to

[31:10]me

[31:10]if somebody

[31:11]said can

[31:11]you point

[31:12]out

[31:12]modern day

[31:14]poetry

[31:14]like when we

[31:15]look back

[31:15]in 20 years

[31:16]and we talk

[31:16]about poetry

[31:17]in the 2010s

[31:18]this is exactly

[31:19]what I'd show

[31:20]them

[31:20]when I was

[31:20]listening to

[31:20]this in my

[31:21]headphones

[31:21]I was like

[31:22]this is the

[31:22]first album

[31:23]I was like

[31:23]I gotta

[31:23]look at

[31:24]these lyrics

[31:24]I gotta

[31:24]see what

[31:25]he's actually

[31:25]saying

[31:25]because I

[31:26]know

[31:26]that I'm

[31:27]missing

[31:27]something

[31:28]and I'm

[31:28]just blown

[31:29]away by this

[31:29]whole album

[31:30]alright so

[31:31]let's get into

[31:32]the album

[31:32]the first song

[31:33]is Wesley's

[31:34]Theory

[31:34]and you might

[31:35]say to

[31:35]yourself

[31:35]hey is

[31:35]this album

[31:36]is this

[31:37]song about

[31:37]Wesley Snipes

[31:38]oh yeah

[31:39]it kind of

[31:39]is right

[31:40]oh it

[31:41]totally is

[31:42]so Aaron

[31:50]as you know

[31:51]is a major

[31:52]he's what

[31:53]we call

[31:53]a P-head

[31:54]in that he

[31:55]loves

[31:55]Parliament

[31:56]he loves

[31:56]P-funk

[31:56]he loves

[31:57]that whole

[31:57]thing

[31:57]and when

[31:58]he said

[31:58]that he

[31:59]loves

[31:59]this album

[31:59]and when

[32:00]I heard

[32:01]what this

[32:01]album

[32:02]sounded like

[32:02]it sounds

[32:03]exactly

[32:04]like a

[32:04]Parliament

[32:04]album

[32:05]I was like

[32:05]oh this

[32:06]is why

[32:06]Aaron

[32:06]loves it

[32:07]so much

[32:07]I mean

[32:07]this

[32:07]first

[32:08]couple

[32:08]tracks

[32:08]is so

[32:09]heavy

[32:09]and

[32:09]so

[32:09]heavy

[32:10]on that

[32:10]funk

[32:10]it's just

[32:11]crazy

[32:11]the intro

[32:12]with George

[32:13]Clinton

[32:13]is pretty

[32:14]badass

[32:14]isn't it

[32:15]yeah I

[32:16]love hearing

[32:17]George

[32:17]Clinton's

[32:17]voice

[32:18]I love

[32:18]I love

[32:19]the funk

[32:19]vibe

[32:20]I like

[32:20]that

[32:21]from track

[32:22]one he

[32:23]throws in

[32:23]that whistle

[32:23]sound

[32:24]which is

[32:24]just like

[32:25]absolute

[32:25]signifier

[32:26]that this

[32:26]is West

[32:27]Coast

[32:27]gang

[32:27]you know

[32:28]LA

[32:28]rap

[32:29]I love

[32:29]it

[32:30]you don't

[32:34]hear that

[32:35]it's a very

[32:35]common noise

[32:36]on a lot

[32:36]of G-funk

[32:37]albums

[32:37]you don't

[32:37]hear it

[32:38]very much

[32:38]so my

[32:38]understanding

[32:39]is legit

[32:39]like

[32:39]this whole

[32:40]album

[32:40]is kind

[32:40]of

[32:41]and correct

[32:41]me if

[32:42]I'm wrong

[32:42]but part

[32:42]of it

[32:42]is like

[32:43]black

[32:44]people

[32:44]to some

[32:44]point

[32:45]have

[32:45]been

[32:47]successful

[32:47]and then

[32:48]he kind

[32:48]of looks

[32:48]at it

[32:49]as like

[32:49]hey

[32:49]people

[32:49]are

[32:50]successful

[32:50]but they

[32:50]haven't

[32:51]been

[32:51]like

[32:51]they

[32:52]don't

[32:52]have

[32:52]the

[32:52]education

[32:53]to know

[32:53]how to

[32:53]pay their

[32:54]taxes

[32:54]or deal

[32:55]with things

[32:55]the way

[32:56]that

[32:56]institutions

[32:58]have always

[32:58]dealt with

[32:59]before

[32:59]and so

[33:00]then we

[33:00]punish

[33:01]these

[33:01]people

[33:01]and so

[33:02]he calls

[33:03]it like

[33:03]Wesley

[33:03]Snipes

[33:03]as an

[33:04]example

[33:04]where I

[33:04]think he

[33:05]went to

[33:14]so much

[33:14]money

[33:14]but at

[33:15]the same

[33:15]time

[33:16]society

[33:16]doesn't

[33:17]educate

[33:17]young

[33:18]black

[33:19]men

[33:19]on how

[33:19]to take

[33:19]care of

[33:20]their

[33:20]money

[33:20]or how

[33:20]to pay

[33:20]their

[33:21]taxes

[33:21]and so

[33:21]he got

[33:22]in trouble

[33:22]for it

[33:22]which is

[33:23]totally

[33:23]true

[33:23]I mean

[33:23]I pay

[33:24]somebody

[33:24]to do

[33:24]my

[33:24]taxes

[33:25]because

[33:25]to me

[33:26]I don't

[33:26]want to

[33:27]deal

[33:27]with

[33:27]that

[33:27]shit

[33:27]and who

[33:28]teaches

[33:29]people

[33:29]that

[33:29]if you

[33:29]don't

[33:29]grow

[33:30]up

[33:30]in a

[33:30]family

[33:30]that

[33:30]does

[33:31]that

[33:31]it's

[33:31]crazy

[33:31]I started

[33:32]looking

[33:32]in

[33:33]and I

[33:33]was like

[33:34]is there

[33:35]artists

[33:35]that have

[33:35]gone

[33:36]through

[33:36]that

[33:36]and it

[33:36]turns

[33:37]out

[33:37]there

[33:37]is

[33:37]a

[33:37]ton

[33:38]of

[33:38]artists

[33:38]that

[33:38]have

[33:38]gone

[33:39]through

[33:39]this

[33:39]like

[33:39]Mary J.

[33:41]Blige

[33:41]owed

[33:42]$4

[33:42]million

[33:42]Flava

[33:43]Flav

[33:44]Matt's

[33:44]favorite

[33:44]$3.1

[33:45]million

[33:45]no wonder

[33:46]Matt

[33:46]doesn't

[33:46]like

[33:47]him

[33:47]he

[33:47]doesn't

[33:47]pay

[33:47]his

[33:47]taxes

[33:48]but

[33:49]there's

[33:49]some

[33:49]really

[33:49]interesting

[33:50]ones

[33:50]mystical

[33:51]owed

[33:51]$3.2

[33:52]million

[33:52]and did

[33:53]time

[33:54]for it

[33:54]Fat Joe

[33:55]owed

[33:56]$3

[33:56]million

[33:56]did

[33:57]time

[33:57]in

[33:57]federal

[33:57]prison

[33:58]for

[33:58]it

[33:58]Chuck

[33:59]Barry

[34:00]did

[34:00]four

[34:00]months

[34:01]for

[34:01]owing

[34:01]$100

[34:02]grand

[34:02]in

[34:02]back

[34:03]taxes

[34:03]and

[34:04]when

[34:05]you

[34:05]talk

[34:05]about

[34:05]this

[34:05]being

[34:06]a

[34:06]real

[34:06]thing

[34:07]Willie

[34:08]Nelson

[34:09]owed

[34:09]$32

[34:10]million

[34:11]I

[34:12]don't

[34:13]believe

[34:13]he

[34:13]did

[34:13]any

[34:13]time

[34:14]for

[34:14]it

[34:14]there

[34:16]you

[34:16]go

[34:16]bingo

[34:16]bingo

[34:17]bingo

[34:17]it's

[34:18]obviously

[34:19]it's

[34:19]just

[34:20]taxes

[34:20]are

[34:21]from

[34:22]as

[34:23]far

[34:24]back

[34:24]as

[34:24]Al

[34:24]Capone

[34:25]maybe

[34:25]further

[34:25]taxes

[34:26]are

[34:26]an

[34:26]easy

[34:27]way

[34:27]to

[34:27]get

[34:27]the

[34:28]federal

[34:28]government

[34:28]involved

[34:28]in

[34:28]people

[34:29]they

[34:29]want

[34:29]to

[34:29]go

[34:29]after

[34:30]anyway

[34:30]and

[34:30]there

[34:30]is

[34:31]a

[34:31]long

[34:31]history

[34:31]as

[34:32]well

[34:32]of

[34:32]surveillance

[34:34]of

[34:34]African

[34:34]Americans

[34:34]and

[34:36]surveillance

[34:36]of

[34:37]black

[34:37]rappers

[34:38]there's

[34:38]a

[34:38]whole

[34:39]host

[34:39]of

[34:39]information

[34:41]about

[34:41]people

[34:41]who

[34:42]are

[34:42]being

[34:42]surveilled

[34:42]illegally

[34:43]and

[34:44]taxes

[34:44]are

[34:44]an

[34:45]easy

[34:45]way

[34:45]to

[34:45]get

[34:46]an

[34:46]in

[34:46]road

[34:46]there

[34:46]go

[34:47]ahead

[34:47]Rob

[34:47]well

[34:48]guys

[34:49]I

[34:49]mean

[34:49]if

[34:49]setting

[34:49]up

[34:50]cameras

[34:50]in

[34:50]a

[34:50]bathroom

[34:50]is

[34:51]illegal

[34:51]surveillance

[34:52]like

[34:52]who

[34:52]hasn't

[34:52]done

[34:53]it

[34:53]I

[34:58]haven't

[34:58]Aaron

[34:59]have

[34:59]you

[34:59]not

[34:59]guilty

[35:00]Russell

[35:01]no

[35:02]just

[35:02]you

[35:03]Rob

[35:03]no

[35:03]I

[35:04]was

[35:04]just

[35:04]going

[35:04]to

[35:04]say

[35:05]there

[35:05]was

[35:05]that

[35:05]ESPN

[35:06]30 for

[35:06]30

[35:06]episode

[35:08]broke

[35:08]you know

[35:09]and so

[35:09]it goes

[35:10]from

[35:10]it's

[35:11]a

[35:11]socioeconomic

[35:11]thing

[35:12]goes

[35:12]from

[35:13]entertainers

[35:14]to

[35:14]athletes

[35:15]it

[35:15]goes

[35:15]across

[35:16]the

[35:17]whole

[35:17]gamut

[35:17]and

[35:17]it's

[35:18]more

[35:18]than

[35:18]just

[35:19]the

[35:19]entertainers

[35:20]there's

[35:22]a

[35:22]new

[35:22]Ma Rainey

[35:23]thing

[35:23]there's

[35:23]a

[35:23]there's

[35:23]a

[35:23]movie

[35:23]that just

[35:24]came out

[35:24]on

[35:24]Netflix

[35:25]and I

[35:25]watched

[35:25]it

[35:26]today

[35:26]I

[35:26]plan

[35:27]to

[35:27]watch

[35:27]it

[35:27]today

[35:27]because

[35:28]I

[35:28]wanted

[35:28]to

[35:28]see

[35:29]it

[35:29]and

[35:29]what's

[35:29]the

[35:29]name

[35:29]of

[35:30]it

[35:30]Ma

[35:31]Rainey

[35:31]Black

[35:32]Bottom

[35:32]Black

[35:33]Bottom

[35:33]Gal

[35:34]Rosie

[35:35]am I

[35:36]saying

[35:36]it right

[35:36]I think

[35:36]it's just

[35:37]Ma Rainey's

[35:37]Black

[35:37]Bottom

[35:37]it's

[35:39]called

[35:39]Ma

[35:40]Rainey

[35:40]Exploder

[35:41]he

[35:41]missed

[35:42]the

[35:42]Exploder

[35:42]part

[35:42]he

[35:43]died

[35:46]while

[35:47]I was

[35:47]in

[35:47]post

[35:47]production

[35:47]and

[35:48]you

[35:48]know

[35:49]it

[35:49]talks

[35:49]about

[35:49]the

[35:50]same

[35:50]things

[35:51]there

[35:51]as

[35:51]back

[35:51]in

[35:51]the

[35:51]20s

[35:52]and

[35:52]you

[35:53]know

[35:53]the

[35:53]entertainers

[35:54]getting

[35:54]used

[35:55]by

[35:55]white

[35:56]suits

[35:58]more or

[35:59]less

[35:59]and

[35:59]how

[36:00]it

[36:02]just

[36:02]affects

[36:02]everything

[36:03]and

[36:03]we're

[36:03]still

[36:03]talking

[36:04]about

[36:04]it

[36:04]here

[36:04]and

[36:04]so

[36:05]I

[36:05]don't

[36:05]know

[36:05]it's

[36:06]it's

[36:06]a

[36:07]deep

[36:07]long

[36:08]standing

[36:09]problem

[36:11]that

[36:11]will

[36:12]continue

[36:12]to be

[36:13]a

[36:13]problem

[36:13]until

[36:13]something

[36:14]changes

[36:14]you

[36:15]know

[36:15]isn't

[36:15]it

[36:15]weird

[36:15]that

[36:15]this

[36:16]is

[36:16]so

[36:16]similar

[36:16]to

[36:16]one

[36:16]of

[36:16]the

[36:17]best

[36:17]opening

[36:17]tracks

[36:18]on

[36:18]any

[36:18]album

[36:18]ever

[36:19]tax

[36:20]man

[36:20]I

[36:20]mean

[36:20]it's

[36:21]just

[36:21]like

[36:21]it's

[36:21]so

[36:22]crazy

[36:22]that

[36:22]it

[36:23]just

[36:23]lines

[36:23]up

[36:23]like

[36:23]that

[36:24]this

[36:24]track

[36:26]was

[36:26]it

[36:27]kind

[36:27]of

[36:27]jumped

[36:28]all

[36:28]over

[36:28]with

[36:29]different

[36:29]kind

[36:30]of

[36:30]musical

[36:30]aspects

[36:31]but I

[36:31]really

[36:31]loved

[36:31]it

[36:31]as an

[36:32]opening

[36:32]track

[36:32]he's

[36:35]talking

[36:35]about

[36:35]buying

[36:35]guns

[36:36]from

[36:36]the

[36:36]CIA

[36:36]you

[36:36]know

[36:38]what

[36:39]this

[36:39]album

[36:39]is

[36:39]going

[36:39]to

[36:39]be

[36:39]about

[36:40]I

[36:41]will

[36:41]say

[36:41]though

[36:41]I

[36:42]was

[36:42]like

[36:42]oh

[36:42]is

[36:42]this

[36:42]like

[36:43]a

[36:43]P-Funk

[36:44]record

[36:44]like

[36:45]it's

[36:45]very

[36:45]strange

[36:46]and it

[36:46]gets away

[36:47]from that

[36:47]at the

[36:47]end

[36:47]I

[36:47]mean

[36:47]part

[36:48]of

[36:48]what

[36:48]he's

[36:48]talking

[36:49]about

[36:49]on

[36:49]this

[36:49]album

[36:49]is

[36:49]that

[36:50]he's

[36:50]really

[36:50]going

[36:50]through

[36:50]the

[36:51]history

[36:51]of

[36:51]black

[36:51]music

[36:52]right

[36:52]so

[36:53]he's

[36:53]going

[36:53]all

[36:53]the

[36:54]way

[36:54]through

[36:54]funk

[36:54]he's

[36:55]doing

[36:55]jazz

[36:55]he's

[36:56]doing

[36:56]you know

[36:57]bebop

[36:57]he's

[36:57]doing

[36:58]all

[36:58]these

[36:58]different

[36:58]kinds

[36:58]that

[36:58]you're

[36:59]going

[36:59]to

[36:59]hear

[36:59]which

[36:59]is

[36:59]part

[36:59]of

[36:59]why this is so entertaining and here's a little bebop for you so this is the interlude this is

[37:13]the second track technically right yeah yes he's just rapping his ass off i don't know how he does

[37:19]this but it's super fast too isn't he yeah and i don't think like i don't want to put down rap as

[37:24]an art form because obviously i i elevated incredibly but this is beyond that when you

[37:30]rap it elevates rap oh yeah oh yeah no when i did it i was like i was like this is very hard for me

[37:35]so it must be very uh it must be a very high form of art i fear if i feel like he may have

[37:40]interpolated the bad boys or whatever that word is called interpolated is that the right word

[37:45]but but that was like i mean that's like a a combining rap and like a scat like it was just

[37:51]incredible and i what i really love about this song is i love

[37:54]the

[37:54]this woman in the beginning saying this

[37:57]can you imagine being with a woman and she called russ what if you were on a date and she goes

[38:10]god you're baller ass you're boss ass you'd be like hell yeah that's what i'm talking about

[38:15]like that's what i i know i i think she was essentially calling him off brand ass that's

[38:19]what i typically get usually the worst thing about this is that i normally get this in text it's not a

[38:24]call and in my text i also use a female voice for text reading like we did earlier with steve's text

[38:30]so i have like a robot text texting me these breakup messages like on a weekly basis and it's

[38:35]like you're off brand ass i need a better ass a boss it's really terrible it's very hard to get

[38:41]through you are like a bunch of bk knights i am looking for some nikes wow bk knights yes i haven't

[38:49]been referred to as that yet but if that happens i will i will let you know immediately if some

[38:54]why not all right so next up we have king kunta i love this this is a highlight for me

[39:03]i think this is the best song on the album the beat on this song just is so awesome

[39:09]i mean p-funk all over the place on this one

[39:14]now this has this bass player thundercat on it and it's helped to be produced by red food

[39:24]oh mfg right is that the band he's in the group he's in is it is it like the yellow

[39:31]thundercat or what thundercat aren't there like five of them they all put together to form the

[39:35]ultimate thundercat thundercat oh no you're thinking of uh megatron no i think it's thundercats

[39:42]i think there are five different cats no no our listeners go google now i think there are five

[39:46]different cats that form a huge cat no no no no i'm right i'm right on this one no thundercats

[39:54]is the one where they had the hot cat the old cat the guy cat and then like and then i think

[39:59]they form a bigger cat no i think that's a dream you had thundercat himself has like a whole he's

[40:05]his his solo album uh i think it's called punch drunk love uh is great but he's a he's into he's

[40:11]definitely into like a lot of weird cartoons he sings about anime he's a very interesting guy and

[40:15]it's fun to hear his voice all over this this album this is the track that for me like this

[40:19]is what i wanted to hear i remember hearing this album the first time when it came out i felt like

[40:24]i just want to hear kendrick you know rap because that's what he does better than anyone

[40:28]but what you realize the more you listen to the album is that he's done that he's done

[40:32]pure rapping if you listen to good kid mad city or even his mixtapes he's done the rapping thing

[40:37]where he can rap better than anybody and he's he's judicious with how he hands out his bars

[40:43]on this one but yeah i agree russell like he's just going for this one what band am i thinking

[40:48]of guys that has red food they did party rock i don't know what you're talking about you've

[40:54]dumped me is that the lm lmfao god i was calling him omfg god i mean i'm so fucking old so lmfao

[41:02]is the group that did party rock right and red foo is in that group and one of my favorite facts of

[41:08]all time is that red foo is in that hip-hop group and the other person is his uncle can you imagine

[41:14]starting a hip-hop group with your uncle just pick an uncle any uncle you want imagine you're

[41:19]like hey we should start a hip-hop group it would be a wild that would be a russ would you do a hip-hop

[41:24]group with your uncle just pick an uncle any uncle you want imagine you're like hey we should start a

[41:24]with your nephew yeah now that i would be down with russell that's cool it's gonna be it's gonna

[41:28]be called barney did it better whatever my nephews are into these days we're just gonna like we're

[41:32]gonna do we're gonna do i love you you love me over and over it's gonna be awesome god this song

[41:38]and the opening to it i mean listen to this i got a bone up here right from the drop right i don't

[41:43]want you monkey mouth sitting in my throne again because this album is interesting right because

[41:48]it kind of goes from him being talking about social issues to him talking about being famous

[41:54]and wrapping those in and then talking about going back to the streets i mean it's just

[41:57]the tone shifts wildly between these songs i love it i think this also is just a requirement if you

[42:03]were the top rapper in the game which he was at this time you have to have a track that

[42:07]destroys every other rapper in the game you just have to come out and do it once and so this was

[42:12]him saying like yeah i can still do this and then i'm gonna do everything else i want for the rest

[42:16]of the album i don't think making fun of people is very nice i think people should stop doing that

[42:20]i agree all right the

[42:24]that was a joke about me all right now i have to explain my joke wipe that off the board matt rub

[42:29]that out too all right institutionalized with snoop you mentioned this is with snoop

[42:39]i decided to um honor snoop tonight i think believe this is the first album where snoop

[42:46]was co-starring on one of our albums and you know snoop is kind of known for showing up on

[42:50]these albums right oh yeah so in honor of snoop i am proud of you and i'm proud of you and i'm

[42:54]drinking something called 19 crimes cali red and it has snoop on the label 19 crimes tells the true

[43:03]story of rule breakers who beat the odds overcome adversity and went on to become rock heroes in

[43:09]their society folk heroes i should say and snoop became a leader in contemporary pop culture snoop

[43:15]embodies the timeless values of the 19 crimes rogues who came before him so i'm honoring snoop

[43:21]tonight by drinking this bottle of 19 crimes cali red

[43:24]i love it snoop is a folk hero i'm looking at what the other 19 crimes are on the uh website

[43:32]this is weird because one of the crimes is underage drinking and it's just like the son

[43:36]of the guy who made the wine and then the other crime is uh is george w bush for war crime so i

[43:41]that's kind of surprised by that trust me that's better than the other joke i was gonna make guys

[43:48]i don't want to laugh but i can't help it i suppose i suppose it works when we're talking

[43:53]about being

[43:54]institutionalized and institutions right i love how local and global this album is he's so specific

[44:00]to compton and he's doing so many things that are compton you know i mean snoop's not compton he's

[44:05]long beach but you know west coast rap and he i think he's quoting snoop when he says i put that

[44:09]i'm on mama and my baby too maybe baby boo too and then snoop shows up on this track it's so cool

[44:13]and then the whole thing is about a larger experience and i love that kind of like

[44:18]micro and macro in the same do you think he was pissed when snoop called him out as being five

[44:22]foot something so i had to look up because i was like oh my god i'm not gonna do that

[44:24]because i'm not a huge kendrick lamar fan i've never really listened to his music before but

[44:28]when snoop called him out as being five foot something i was like well what does that mean

[44:31]and then i went and looked it up he's only like five foot six he's pretty sure and i was gonna

[44:34]do a list on the shortest rappers ever but i decided not to go that route but like you think

[44:38]he's like hey what the hell man i know i'm sure you don't need to call me out or does he approve

[44:42]what snoop does on his album could you imagine if a rapper was too short and a pimp like that'd be

[44:47]oh rob that's so good that's the one thing i left out of my room going is that tomorrow night i'm

[44:53]super looking forward to it i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like

[44:54]to the e40 versus too short on versus the battle of the bay that was supposed to be part of my

[44:59]i don't know i understand the words you said i don't understand the order that came out of your

[45:04]mouth almost none of them we call that a left field take is that a football game going on

[45:08]what are you talking about it's i believe that's called a left field take rob

[45:12]yeah you know what i'm leaving this pause

[45:16]the pause is staying in this there's the second greatest media event of 2020

[45:24]after this podcast has been the versus series where they bring in two artists to do battles

[45:29]against one another they've had erica scott versus jill badu they had uh whoa geez erica

[45:34]badu versus jill scott sorry you're gonna edit that out i don't like what aaron talks under

[45:38]our soundbite they had young gz versus gucci main i mean and tomorrow night is e40 versus too short

[45:44]i'm sorry we got to get back so aaron i'm sorry if i wanted to catch this so-called greatest media

[45:48]event that nobody but you has heard of where would you go check this out instagram live or apple music

[45:54]okay i thought you're going to give me some like vivo site such a big uh event that it's yeah

[45:58]on channel four or channel five so it's on my google drive i'm going to share it with you like

[46:03]he's got you got to go to like you know rap.fre and you're like wait a minute is that how is that

[46:08]fre how's that a website all right so let's uh when you it's crazy when you log on there's two

[46:13]viewers it's you and aaron watching this yeah welcome welcome to my party thank you guys for

[46:17]joining so this song second biggest media event this song also had a hook now the problem is i

[46:22]listen to these at school right so i've been listening to these for a long time and i've

[46:24]started singing the hooks to this song now the first hook i i loved was the first part where he

[46:28]says every blank is a star and i was like singing that in my head over and over i was like don't

[46:33]sing that out loud you're gonna get in trouble and then the second one was this

[46:36]yes this is in my head all the time

[46:41]i i thought i thought this was the worst part of the album i didn't get it and i'm sure there's a

[46:48]lot of parts of this album that i'm just not gonna get and aren't gonna resonate with me but like

[46:52]i don't i don't get it i think

[46:54]this is the weakest part of the album but russell that's because you have always been a cleaner

[46:58]person than i like russell you are much better about taking showers than i am like i i remember

[47:03]vividly wait like you are much more cleanly than i and i think about this you think like no you

[47:10]gotta get up you gotta clean you gotta clean yourself you gotta take a shower you gotta move

[47:13]on with your day because if you're not taking care of yourself you can't make any other changes

[47:17]and russell you're not familiar with that because you're always do we need an aaron

[47:20]rightfield take of the week aaron aaron aaron spends too much time on foot care

[47:24]he doesn't spend enough time on showering that's the thing it is wild though isn't isn't just isn't

[47:28]just toilet paper like in general the idea wild like and i heard somebody say this the other day

[47:33]like if i stepped in like dog shit right and it got all in between my toes and like the whole thing

[47:38]right and then somebody handed me just a piece of paper and was like here wipe this out with your

[47:43]this paper i wouldn't be like oh that's good enough like that's wild we can recover from this

[47:48]right you gotta have some liquid in there yeah yeah i mean you're totally right maybe some

[47:53]disinfection

[47:54]oh all right so let's talk about uh these walls this this won a grammy for best rap

[48:00]and slash song performance and uh aaron don't laugh with how this starts just listen to how this

[48:06]starts so is this a double entendre for vaginal walls yeah do you know the sugar walls

[48:17]kind of sounds like a prince song doesn't it yeah

[48:20]yeah rob you were talking earlier about

[48:24]how he was trying to do something with prince i think it was on this song right

[48:27]i have no idea right up prince's alley for sure i think they were gonna do uh kendrick lamar and

[48:32]prince were gonna do something together and they got in the studio and then they just ended up

[48:35]talking the whole time and never did it but i think this was the song where prince was gonna

[48:39]work with him that sounds like how we start and end this podcast except the thing that comes out

[48:43]in the middle is not as good as these walls we don't make kendrick lamar records in between yeah

[48:49]turns out neither one of us are kendrick lamar or prince all right

[48:54]right so there is a line in here about effing a famous rapper right

[48:58]aaron why did you want this clip in here defend yourself oh yeah i just

[49:05]i just thought that kind of brought the whole song home that that he at the whole time he's

[49:18]been talking to a person who doesn't know that his lady's sipping out on him i feel like that's

[49:22]like that kind of punched him in the face i feel like that's like that kind of punched him in the

[49:24]that's it i wasn't trying to make a joke or anything i i wish when i got broken up versus

[49:28]via robot text that they would say hey i've i decided to hook up with a famous rapper instead

[49:34]it would be much easier on my my ego than the previous robot voice breakup text yeah i broke

[49:41]up with you for a butterfinger candy wrapper there's something there i feel like there's a

[49:46]joke there somewhere okay i'm gonna flesh it out on here you're right okay so what candy

[49:52]rapper is the funniest

[49:54]i mean it's kind of way off all right uh now we've got you lowercase

[50:01]this song is about his depression which he has famously struggled from

[50:08]and it's also an allusion to the tupac poem love is just complicated tupac comes up over

[50:14]and over kendrick talks about tupac as being a major influence on him

[50:16]i mean this is poetry in my mind right here matt what do you think of the album so far

[50:24]my favorite part of the show

[50:26]the matt's not talking enough so let's ask him a question and see what he says i love it yeah

[50:33]hey you know it's it's kind of stressful to me oh yeah um you know all it's it's it's not my

[50:42]cup of tea from a rap standpoint he's clearly uh i mean he's an artist he's ahead of his time he's

[50:48]he's great at what he does it's just it it just doesn't speak to me i guess so

[50:54]that was not one of my favorite songs this this is the song where there's like the old raspy voice

[50:58]rapping am i right on that oh yeah it's this part here that aaron cut out and i'm not gonna listen

[51:02]to it it goes like this do you like this part aaron i'm i mean i'm i i gotta agree with matt

[51:09]it is stressful i i don't i don't know if i would say i would like it i like it but i think it's

[51:13]important to include as a the the second part of this of the story arc of this song understood

[51:20]that's that's it's rough to listen to somebody what they think the voice in their head is

[51:24]telling them when i just ignore the voice in my head at all times or i actually listen to the

[51:27]voice in my head at all times that's what the real problem is we we seem to hear that voice

[51:31]about every friday rob so you keep you keep suppressing it it's going well for you yeah i

[51:36]think if you guys could see the things i'm thinking that i don't say out loud you'd turn

[51:40]white parts of this album are definitely not intended to be pleasant to listen to and and

[51:45]i've read that uh from several sources of people writing about this album and that that song in

[51:49]particular that's hard that song did it because i skipped it over and over and over next we have

[51:53]all right this is the song one song of the year best music video best rap performance best rap

[51:58]song er actually was nominated for those that won best rap performance and best song

[52:03]this song became a big rallying cry for the black lives matter movement

[52:13]what do you think of the rapping here aaron this seems like super impressive

[52:18]yeah i i liked i liked this uh this little clip because

[52:23]because i think this is again him flexing his muscles where uh if you listen to some of his

[52:28]like uh his mixtape section 80 and a couple of other things where he can do this anytime he wants

[52:35]if you you know it's like um i'm struggling to come up with a a synonym in other worlds but

[52:42]well it's like if he wants to come out and right rip the best rap verse of all time of the year

[52:48]he can do it and he chose on this album to explore a lot of other musical avenues so

[52:53]he's always able to do dense rhyme schemes and uh internal rhymes and write poetry like rob said but

[53:02]he doesn't always choose to do that so i i was interested to hear that but this is something we

[53:06]see we've seen it over and over we saw with brian wilson we saw it to an extent with bob dylan but

[53:11]they're like yeah guess what i can churn out those same songs that you love and i can do that over and

[53:15]over and over and i could make a commercial success anytime i want i don't want to i want

[53:19]to make something more complicated and that's where we get kind of these real seminal albums

[53:23]like this right and aaron don't give me a thumbs up when i say seminal i that's not his thumb but

[53:30]wow all right when i when i heard that one though when i heard that i heard it was like a really

[53:38]fast rap so it started making me think what are the greatest fast rap songs of all time oh this

[53:44]is red oh man okay now i do see aaron's thumb for sure i was you know i was hoping we would

[53:49]talk about this because it's another you know i feel like i'm gonna let aaron

[53:53]down though here well that's not let him down let's count him down yeah that thumb that's been

[53:59]sticking up in aaron's zoom call is gonna go down real quickly but i don't pick his songs he likes

[54:04]no i'm excited he's got a shirt on the set jeffrey tubin did nothing wrong i don't

[54:08]i thought it was funny okay so one thing i tried to do is there's a lot of rappers out

[54:19]there that are really really fast but i've tried to pick most of my songs on my list

[54:23]are songs that i think are good songs not just the fastest rapper so the first song of the best

[54:29]fast rap song ever is outcast bombs over bang damn big boy here check this out

[54:35]yes that's fast

[54:43]i gotta say this guy this one jumped on the list quite a ways right snakeonia is

[54:53]it's on that album yeah they've got a couple of it then all of a sudden they got four or five

[54:58]albums let me check god that bang but you can hear every word you can hear every word it's

[55:03]and don't you think like if you're gonna be a fast rapper and you want really people to really

[55:07]enjoy you got to be able to understand what they're saying it can't just be syllables right

[55:10]yes right i am gonna say when somebody was recording a karaoke version of a rap earlier

[55:15]today it was very difficult to both speak clearly and quickly both things i'm not very good at

[55:22]number two on my list and this one became famous if you guys ever saw harry potter the kid who played

[55:27]harry potter did this a cover of this on the jimmy fallon the tonight show this is blackalicious

[55:33]alphabet aerobics you guys know this one i don't know this no i'm gonna seek it out though wow you

[55:44]stumped you stumped aaron russell you win a prize russell you got me on this one

[55:48]it's kind of got a jazz bass line like a lot of this album

[55:52]i do know blackalicious but not this song so the track is essentially him going through every

[55:57]letter in the alphabet and he's just putting it together all these words but if you go look it up

[56:02]look up alphabet aerobics and the first thing that's going to pop up is what's the guy's name

[56:06]who played daniel radcliffe daniel radcliffe does this song on the tonight show and it is so fun to

[56:12]watch i would highly recommend keep quiet it's quantum coral isn't got a quart of water we gotta

[56:16]really raw raps rising up rapidly riding the rushing radio activity super scientific sound

[56:22]sir thought

[56:22]god being famous if you're fucking famous enough i mean can you imagine going on tonight show and

[56:29]being like oh you want to talk about acting no actually i want to rap the song and he gets to

[56:34]rap it with the roots that's pretty cool and they're like well okay well okay you're so famous

[56:39]you can do that what song is it a song everybody knows nope it's blackalicious alphabet something

[56:43]and they're like oh okay well that's like that's how you test how famous you are if i tried to do

[56:48]that they'd be like wait who are you in the post game show we'll check it out you guys will really

[56:52]love it number three on the list played in their sleep i love that you called the post game show

[56:57]number three on the list is eminem rap game let's see if you guys know this one

[57:02]so this song is there a sample in here from blue

[57:14]i'm blue that's on

[57:18]i hear it

[57:23]he better give them some money but this song actually broke the record i hear a lot of

[57:31]this is most words in a hit single 1560 words in a six minute song

[57:36]most words in any hit single song ever did you guys hear all the samples in there

[57:41]let me listen

[57:41]yeah

[57:46]yeah

[57:48]just get them all in rob i don't know what you're talking about is there a honky i thought i heard

[57:53]i thought i heard him sample the jitterbug at some point

[57:55]oh no this has gone fucking haywire

[58:01]oh no oh no oh wow we really lost oh my god oh no this is literally the same as us talking over

[58:10]aaron during the podcast this is what it sounds like i don't like what aaron talks under our

[58:13]samples before i edit it that's exactly what it sounds like with all of us talking and aaron's

[58:17]like boring

[58:18]stuff and russ and i are saying real fun cool stuff so number two on the list is

[58:22]bust a rhyme break your neck check this one out this is fast i'm sorry aaron i think that was mean

[58:27]that's getting edited out by the way

[58:29]buster rhymes is uh underrated underrated

[58:38]is he the king of fast rapping between like 93 and 98 99 man he had some bangers we haven't used

[58:47]bangers in a while no didn't bust a rhyme come to our college at one point didn't he perform at

[58:52]our college he definitely did and at one point he held out the microphone for the crowd to sing

[58:56]and uh and uh 300 caucasian lutherans from minnesota had no idea what to say at any point

[59:02]this this concert was the only concert where i've ever gone crowd surfing i may have been

[59:07]with rob actually or i was with some friends we were in the very back and i remember

[59:12]someone picked up a smaller friend of mine and they made it like three people forward

[59:16]and they got me in the back and i was like oh my god i'm so sorry i'm so sorry i'm so sorry i'm so

[59:17]sorry i'm so sorry i'm so sorry i'm so sorry i got dropped right on their face like within

[59:19]like two seconds so then in classic college male fashion you were like

[59:23]that i better try that it's gonna go different for me all the friends were looking at me like

[59:28]russ you got to go next i'm like look i weigh like 50 pounds more than that guy and they dropped him

[59:32]i'm not doing it they're like just try it and i crowd surfed and i got all the way to the front

[59:36]i made to the sage and then security grabbed me and they threw me out because i was crowd surfing

[59:40]i do not remember that i wish did you like having everybody touch you i think that'd be fun but i

[59:47]meant extrovert i think that would be a good time it's what i think about whenever i listen to k

[59:52]robin before i go to bed okay i'm gonna say that as a search term for later crowd number one on

[59:59]the list and this person is often credited as being the fastest rapper ever so this one you

[60:04]might not know this song but it has to be on the list it's twista mr tongue twista check this song

[60:10]out yes you know what aaron i don't know this song actually but i know i know this no

[60:17]twistas i mean i know him from his recognized i know him best from his collab with kanye 1992

[60:24]he made the guinness book of world records 11.2 syllables per second on this song

[60:30]he's from chicago i think what if it turns out it's just a micro machine guy in a wig

[60:37]he was like wait i can make some money with the micro machine guy from the list i thought i would

[60:42]get yelled at for that one for taking too much air i don't i wouldn't who do you think who else out

[60:46]there did we not touch

[60:47]on for fastest rappers that are awesome i don't think you missed anyone i think it's a it's a

[60:52]particular skill that not everyone has and not even everyone even tries to i think every once

[60:58]in a while people try it and they do like a verse or two and they they get it down pat but it's not

[61:04]like an art form like twist that really made a he really made his mark by kind of coming out

[61:09]quickly yeah i don't think i russell i think you nailed it i don't think you missed anybody i mean

[61:13]i think i think people should talk about tech nine as a fast rapper but i know there are two different

[61:17]i did look at tech nine tech nine didn't make the cut yeah so i don't think you missed anybody i think

[61:22]black thaw can do it if he wants but you're not going to find him the other one that i had a hard

[61:25]time with was bone thugs has a lot of fast rap songs so the songs that you guys all know are not

[61:31]their fast songs so like crossroads and all those aren't the fast ones he's got they've got some fast

[61:35]verses on crossroads though i think not fast enough for this list rob not fast enough not as fast as

[61:40]tongue twister all right next up we've got did you guys like when tongue twister was talking about

[61:46]like put your red hand on red put your left foot on green like that was my favorite part of that rap

[61:51]russ unveils that that's in the back seat during his dates it's just a twister board he's like all

[61:57]right interlude this is that this is where he's starting kind of an arc for the rest of the album

[62:02]where he's talking about lucifer and kind of a more religious land talking about lucifer in a

[62:06]later one he talks about god coming out the whole time he was talking about saying lucy i thought he

[62:11]was saying lucy like loose cigarette you know how you can buy one cigarette at a time all right

[62:16]so i was like why is he so mad at lucy's i didn't understand that lucy was lucifer that's that's news

[62:23]to me but that makes a lot of sense now i like again he talks about riding dirty i think like

[62:32]he's just like dropping a little like people who love it's a it's a survey of it's a survey of

[62:39]music it really is right this is fun too when he changes his voice a little bit i like this

[62:43]but i i was in uh we were amelia and i were in the same room and i was in the same room and i was

[62:46]in a bodega up on 115th street i think we're farther north than we normally are and the guy

[62:51]ahead of us we went into this bodega and it was like you know we got our gatorades and like our

[62:56]you know swiss miss or not swiss miss what's the we got a little cupcake we had some chips you know

[63:00]we got like then we got another bag of chips or whatever you know whatever you do in a bodega

[63:04]but the guy ahead of us bought he bought a loose cigarette and so he's like yeah give me a cigarette

[63:10]so he gives the guy two bucks he gets a cigarette and the guy lights it for him behind the counter

[63:14]and amelia looked at me like her

[63:16]world had just gotten flipped upside down to watch somebody buy a single cigarette and then

[63:20]get it lit by the guy behind the counter and i was like you know welcome either that's i was like

[63:24]yeah i was like this is this is how it is in new york like it was a cigarette it wasn't a cigar

[63:28]no it was it was a straight up one single cigarette that he was buying and i was like

[63:32]oh if my kid wasn't here i'd be buying that second cigarette so fast oh my god make your head spin

[63:37]one ahead of time never get caught by the wife

[63:40]uh yeah that's smart i gotta run it back really quick was there a weero on that interlude

[63:46]russell's favorite instrument

[63:48]there's definitely some weero action going there it is we got some weero

[63:53]i actually look this up on i look this up on geniuslyrics.com to see if there was a weero

[63:59]and they don't call out a weero so i wrote this down as a tash tish tash tish clock sounding is

[64:05]what i wrote in my notes it's a clock sound i think you need to get on genius russell as a

[64:09]contributor anytime there's a weero get on there weero god 69 and you're putting all the words on

[64:14]there that's your call

[64:16]all right next up mama i feel like i think matt might have already taken that on his peloton

[64:20]name right i can't i can't have overlap with matt's peloton yeah

[64:26]69 69 sex laser 69 69 all right mama this is the one where i was like oh this is poetry

[64:37]cartwheels linen fabric on fashion winning in every decision country gets matched to that

[64:46]isn't it lovely how menaces turn attraction pivoting rappers finishing fraction while

[64:51]writing blue magic thank god for rap i would say it got me a pack but what's better than that

[64:56]the fact it brought me back home i mean think about that listen to that thank god for rap i

[65:01]would say it got me a plaque but what's better in the back the fact that brought me home so he's

[65:05]talking about how he's reconnecting with his roots through the music that he's making i mean it's just

[65:09]like there's just this is one where you have to go to genius.com and figure out what the heck he's

[65:14]talking about because it's unbelievable

[65:16]yeah this is a headphone album i mean but it also works great for playing in the house but

[65:21]you really have to get studied if you want to know what he's talking about uh this song uh hood

[65:26]politics then takes that idea of him talking about how he got out of where he the area where he grew

[65:31]up and now he's talking about the guilt of being rich and famous and going back to that with hood

[65:37]politics 14 years later going hard like when you still want to so he's thinking about hey this is

[65:42]what my youth was like on a dead army

[65:46]he's using his high-pitched biggie voice here

[65:49]is this the album do you think that switch styles most of any album we've done yet

[65:56]yeah i mean that's why i mean that's why when matt said it was stressful to listen to it

[66:01]definitely is it there's never a long groove that you can kind of relax and just enjoy like

[66:08]it's demanding your attention all the time the next song we've got how much a dollar cost this

[66:15]is about it's a story we're going to talk about in a minute but it's a story we're going to talk

[66:16]about in a minute but it's a story we're going to talk about in a minute but it's a story we're going

[66:16]to talk about in a minute but it's a story we're going to talk about in a minute where he sees a

[66:17]homeless guy in south africa who asked him for a dollar uh unhoused excuse me i asked him for a

[66:22]dollar and it turns out that the person is god and he denies it and he's got a great line here

[66:26]he says well how much is that diamonds worth this song reminded me a lot of the arrested development

[66:30]song mr wendell which is when i was growing up like my first idea of like oh yeah what it's like

[66:35]to be around uh kind of an unhoused population and of course it's something that my kids are

[66:39]seeing firsthand here in new york unfortunately but it really is i i thought this was a great

[66:43]african only spoke zulu my american

[66:46]i do have a record store story about this song bring it on who wants to hear it i want to hear

[66:58]it there was a record store in oakland uh that has has closed unfortunately called park boulevard

[67:04]record and tape records and tapes and it was owned by uh andrew nozitsky who i'm sure is listening

[67:09]uh he goes by the second cousin of michael weirdo

[67:12]he goes by he goes by the son of dirt

[67:16]on twitter and he's one of one of the uh rap internet's uh greatest writers characters

[67:22]aficionados uh he writes for fader and other places anyway he owned the record store and uh

[67:27]he was a cool guy and you would you go to the store and it was always like dudes shooting the

[67:31]shit about you know the warriors or whatever and there was always cool records on um and i went to

[67:37]the dollar bin and grabbed a single of the bridges over by boogie down productions which we were

[67:43]talking uh on our um

[67:46]text chain this week about great diss tracks uh bridges over is a great diss track and it was it

[67:52]was he had in the dollar bin and i took it up to the front and i said you know hey man i'm you know

[67:57]checking out and you know buying the records and he goes through checking you know scanning each

[68:01]one of them and then this one that comes up the the boogie down productions when he was like oh

[68:05]you know what honestly i don't know i haven't listened this one i'm not sure what kind of

[68:09]quality it's in like it might not you know so if it's terrible go ahead and bring it back

[68:13]and i was like well it's only a dollar so you know it's

[68:16]fine i'll just like you gotta be a real asshole to bring that back for a dollar right and he said

[68:21]yeah right i mean how much does a dollar cost right and i didn't realize at that moment that

[68:25]he was quoting kendrick and now yeah i'm like oh man what a what a nerd i was not even i wasn't

[68:32]even hip to what he was trying to say to me complexion

[68:35]complexion don't mean a thing

[68:40]complexion don't mean a thing

[68:46]it's about beautiful women of any color

[68:49]uh the rhapsody verse on this is really good she really lays it down too

[68:54]and i read that she basically was like he didn't give me like a lot of instructions he was just like

[68:59]here's the general idea i think one interesting thing about this song is it's it's about

[69:06]complexion but i think really it's about like not feeling good about yourself or something i think

[69:09]a lot of people can relate to that for different reasons right whether they're terrible podcast

[69:14]hosts or whatever they don't feel good about themselves i think a lot of people can relate to

[69:16]themselves like there's so many reasons that i love it when you make fun of aaron it's my

[69:20]favorite part of the show you can relate to this even if it's not specifically about that topic

[69:24]but i think i think there's it's a broader reach than maybe you might initially think yeah i agree

[69:30]my self-esteem is so high it's a wild that might surprise you guys but my self-esteem this is not

[69:34]a bit like i honestly have this high of a self-esteem it's gotten me through every s if i

[69:39]had this high of self-esteem in middle school i definitely would have gotten somebody pregnant

[69:43]there's no doubt in my mind that that's what happened

[69:46]i swear to god my life in middle school i was such a mess i thought i was just nobody

[69:50]i know if i was as confident as i am now it was swung the other way and caused way more trouble

[69:54]than me just not sitting at the right lunch this should be an mtv show after teen mom or whatever

[69:58]like if i were this confident in high school i would have definitely got someone pregnant it

[70:02]would just be like people like rob doing podcasts and people like accomplishing these middle age

[70:08]like stupid things that nobody cares about but if i knew if i were this awesome then

[70:12]and then a big reveal is like a picture of me in middle school and they're like really

[70:16]really this is this is what was gonna get that done i was gonna say the big reveal should be a

[70:21]picture of you doing a podcast with four middle-aged guys in your daughter's bedroom in the middle of

[70:26]new york he ain't getting no one pregnant anymore i don't care i don't care what how many boudoir

[70:32]shoots he does i felt my confidence drop there for a second i've never felt that before all right

[70:36]the black or the berry everybody like confidence

[70:38]once i finish this witness this will convey just what i mean been feeling this way since i was 16

[70:45]came to my city

[70:46]so on wikipedia they said that this is a boom bap beat can you explain that to me aaron do you know

[70:50]what they're talking about they're talking about the drums and the bass

[70:54]i know what a beat is i'm asking about that's like an east coast kind of yeah i mean boom bap

[71:00]rap is kind of an east coast thing uh i think i mean yes tupac is a west coast rapper but he's

[71:06]you know starred while he was a multi-coastal guy i think uh the specter is tupac there's only two

[71:14]yeah i mean well tupac

[71:16]you know he like was born in baltimore and then he learned to rap in oakland and then went back

[71:19]to new jersey with outsiders and then came back to the west coast i think i think wikipedia research

[71:25]you didn't wikipedia coast before this for this podcast rob you're pretty good at wikipedia

[71:31]everything else nope this is all yeah i think you know tupac is a specter over the whole album and i

[71:36]think the black or the berry is obviously that's not a phrase that's unique to tupac but if you

[71:42]you know you think about the opening to um

[71:46]well now i'm forgetting which which tupac song this starts with the back of the black of the

[71:49]juice yeah yeah i think it is so i think he's like making an homage to that era of rap so rosie the

[71:57]song it's it's keep your head up it's keep your head up that's the one yeah i drew a blank thank

[72:01]you for fixing that all right guys it's just like uh when i try to sleep standing up you ain't gotta

[72:07]lie like the feds on me you ain't gotta lie no

[72:10]you ain't gotta lie you ain't gotta lie you ain't gotta lie to kick your mic

[72:16]i do yeah i think in general the beats get more straightforward here late in the album

[72:20]yeah this is another reference to tupac uh with the song lie to kick it

[72:24]and in fact he released this whole album the day after the 20th anniversary of me against the world

[72:31]the tupac album so he's i mean it's tupac one of my favorite things about this song and maybe it's

[72:37]something that some of us can learn on this podcast is he talks about like the loudest one

[72:41]in the room is the weakest one in the room those who don't tell you what they know are the ones who

[72:45]know everything and they're the ones who know everything and they're the ones who know everything

[72:46]and so when aaron talks under us maybe aaron you should think about yeah that when you're talking

[72:51]under rob and i and under matt that it's not about who's speaking the loudest so i just figured

[72:56]i'm looking to sign i hold up sometimes it just says shut up by the way this again made me think

[73:04]about me when i was younger because he's saying uh you don't have to lie to kick it turns out

[73:08]that's not true i had to lie constantly to kick it all the time i am still lying to kick it very

[73:16]lying to kick it was my whole life it's like oh oh do you want to see this movie oh yeah i'd love

[73:22]to see this movie oh what's it called the notebook oh my god i cannot wait i love romantic comedies

[73:26]lying to kick it i this is the first single off the album it's the only top 40 hit off the album

[73:33]it's obviously uh it's got a sample of who's that lady by the isley brothers and he actually went

[73:37]all the way to st louis to uh not on a coast aaron just let you know to ask permission to use this in

[73:46]best rap performance and best rap song and he said that the rest of the album was feeling negative so

[73:52]he wrote this to promote positivity so this is kind of one of the commercial hits from this album

[74:00]right yeah it's the only one kind of right i thought all right was yeah you're right matt

[74:07]but this one best raps on best rap performance right rob yes

[74:15]and best karaoke version on youtube i can tell you right now it's one of the few songs that has a

[74:19]karaoke version i like it's a favorite anecdote about this song i maybe i'll give away who my

[74:27]employer is here but my employer used some verses from this uh song in an ad and uh they're some of

[74:38]the more uplifting verses uh use use the song in an ad about mental health but the song and i i hope

[74:44]that the person who

[74:45]put this song in the ad knew this song also includes the line i put a bullet in the back of

[74:51]the back of the police and i really enjoyed that a corporate ad campaign used uh lines from a song

[74:59]so i put a bullet in the back of the back of the police like someone i love big corporations they

[75:03]never make any mistakes i think it's great got approved by somebody and that's i've always

[75:07]enjoyed that person's like listen i just got fired from pepsi for this kindle jenner ad but

[75:11]i'm here at your company i'm ready to make another ad let's go we're gonna do a successful thing this

[75:15]is gonna be a success

[75:15]that's a mortal man that survives making that decision

[75:20]i will say this part i was thinking about trying to do the karaoke song for i could not figure out

[75:28]the rhythms that he was doing i was like this is too hard i read this was only one of five songs

[75:35]to ever reach the top 100 or the hot 100 that only had one one letter in the name of the song

[75:40]how many other songs there are four others that only had one letter to reach the hot 100

[75:45]all right guys we guys think of any you'll never get it one is x by chris brown one is three by

[75:52]britney spears one is o by o'marian and the last one is 1993 we've got seven by prince in the new

[76:00]i heard that song the other day that song is horny as hell again

[76:06]that yeah that one you're right although that is that same time as that mariah carey song guys i

[76:10]think i was just going through my horny phase all right prince was also wearing a snowmobile suit

[76:15]actually i would like to see that that would kind of be horny all right last one mortal man

[76:24]now originally

[76:25]this album was to be called to pimp a butterfly for

[76:33]because when you spell that out it spells out tupac like tu like the spanish

[76:38]and i think the biggest part of this song that

[76:45]that i don't have a sample of is at the end where he has takes a recording from like a swedish tv

[76:50]station of tupac talking and he sticks himself in there to have a conversation with him which

[76:55]i was so disappointed i thought this song was called mega man after the nintendo game and then

[77:00]he didn't get into any no codes or anything in nintendo i was so so bummed they made two way

[77:06]to how many mega man went all the way up to like what six or seven they made way too many mega

[77:10]mans yeah there was way too many mortal man songs in this album not enough mega man on mega man i

[77:15]always went and fought woodman first because i thought it was funny

[77:18]woodman all right let's get that is it for to pimp a butterfly i gotta say guys once again i have to i

[77:28]have to say this whole setup of this podcast has gotten me to listen to albums i would never ever

[77:33]listen to and this one i i really enjoyed i don't get to make a real rating at the end so i have to

[77:37]say what i think right now all right let's get into everyone's favorite section you could no

[77:43]this is

[77:45]my this is my sisyphean ordeal i'm pushing this rock up the slope every week coming up with a joke

[77:52]sisyphus russ look him up don't type in sisyphus this time in your search

[78:01]wait should i have not invited to that girl on the first date to push that rock up the hill

[78:09]rob you're supposed to laugh into the microphone

[78:15]i think that is very funny longest first date ever meanwhile russ is at the bottom of the chair

[78:19]and umbrella with sunglasses on and some lemonade hey push that rock up there

[78:22]all right so let's get into everybody's section favorite section the rating system is this album

[78:32]uh which is number or the one thing i should know is number 18 on this list

[78:37]is this album falling apart okay in 2020 nobody's listening right now everybody's

[78:45]cut out nobody is listening rolling is this album rolling well tone that means it's perfect just

[78:51]where it is at number 19 and i'm going to say that clean so i can edit it in earlier 19 uh is this

[78:58]album did it get rolling boned it means it's too low on the list it should be up higher which in

[79:04]this case is a lower number so it should not be 19 it should be 18 or lower in this case in the

[79:09]list higher but we it is you know chronological this is later so think earlier on the list

[79:12]now or is it a rolling groan you did not in

[79:15]joy listening to this it should be much lower than 19 but not a lower number it's a higher

[79:19]number or if you're going chronologically a later album all right but not actually chronologically

[79:24]by when the order was made because this is one of the later albums on the list so think about that

[79:28]leo russell what do you think i've never been a i don't listen to a ton of current music so this was

[79:34]my kind of first experience with kendrick lamar and it took me a few listens to really kind of

[79:39]get a vibe with it and really start to appreciate it and i had to read a little bit about it too

[79:44]to understand a lot of the music

[79:45]meaning behind what he was singing about i think it's an amazing album i love wesley's theory i

[79:51]love the song king kinkuta i love some of the the commercial hits for me it's not one of my favorite

[79:57]20 albums ever so i'm going to say rolling boned the other thing i would say is it's hard to really

[80:03]listen to this album and then go back to listen like a beatles album from like 60 years ago because

[80:08]there is so much more going on in an album like this when you go back and listen to the beatles

[80:13]and it's just this very basic

[80:15]beat this very basic guitar and drums and it's really really becoming hard for me to compare

[80:20]these newer albums to the older ones because they are so different in terms of technology and in

[80:26]terms of um just the evolution of what music is right now so it's rolling bone for me i don't

[80:31]think it's one of my 20 favorites but if you were to put this back 50 years ago it just it blows

[80:36]those old albums out of the water from my perspective hey wait a minute it's me paul

[80:40]mccartney you say you like thundercat more than me oh no oh i switched up voices they're like

[80:45]a little bit not gonna do big bopper at the end do not have time rosie what do you think of this

[80:50]album is it rolling well toned rolling boned or rolling grown and don't think about the time the

[80:54]guy at the record store tested you and then realized you'd know nothing about music your

[80:58]wife would have caught that reference by the way i know she would have she would have caught it for

[81:01]sure yeah i i'm i um once again i'm going to defer to both russell and matt who've been uh more eloquent

[81:08]about this than i but um it's hard to think about where this ranks how do you rank something like

[81:14]this it's a to me it's a

[81:15]monumental work of art but i agree with matt it's not easy to listen to um although art doesn't have

[81:21]to be easy and i think that um in terms of an album of the last 10 years it captures so many

[81:30]moments and so much of what was going on in music uh up until that point so um for me i will say

[81:37]rolling well toned um but i certainly understand the the difficulties of trying to enjoy this album

[81:42]uh i'm gonna say rolling grown

[81:45]um i with rosie it's hard where do you peg this so you kind of put this as uh call it

[81:52]conscientious rap rap albums in the last 10 years well it's probably up there it's way up there

[81:58]you know i if you're putting it up against tupac putting up against wu-tang putting up against

[82:03]outcast and my you know outcast is my jam but um you know i i don't know i i would i wouldn't

[82:10]listen to it over any of those other albums um it is hard to listen to

[82:15]so i i would put wu-tang ahead of it i would put uh aquarium by outcast ahead of it probably put

[82:24]maybe biggie ahead of them you know he's it's certainly a great album in the last 10 years

[82:31]it's very monumental where it is but in the grand scheme of things i'm going to say it's

[82:36]rolling groaned meaning it's it's number is too low so it should have a higher number

[82:42]you don't need to explain this part i think i might

[82:45]have said rolling boned earlier i'm rolling grown it was too high i got confused also it's it's it's

[82:50]too high it's rolling grown yep okay guys funny prank acting like you don't understand my system

[82:56]even though i clearly explained this and speaking of things that are funny let's get to my rating

[83:01]what's your rating we have i like i have to hype myself up this is a rolling presidential nomination

[83:08]because obama said this was his favorite from album of 2015 okay how brave to pick an album

[83:14]that won two grammys

[83:15]and he liked it so much that he forgot to close guantanamo bay because of that so that's a

[83:20]a lot of people don't realize that he said he promised he would and then he didn't do what a

[83:25]big mistake all right so much that he forgot to say that cops shouldn't murder people okay

[83:29]my bad i'm the person in power that could do something about it but instead i'm just gonna

[83:34]say i like the album okay gonna edit that part out wow next speaking of things that cause

[83:40]controversy next up we've got kid a by radio no no wow yes we

[83:45]do you won't let us release that earlier episode russell so we have to listen to it again that is

[83:50]your punishment no way that this is how the best no business being anywhere near the song

[83:55]speaking of sys a pissing ordeals this is russ listening to kid a getting into a pissing match

[84:01]and that's it for beck did it better when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time

[84:08]but you're just too lazy to look it up online

[84:15]if you want to hear from guys who chat and then they get off track

[84:19]i've got the perfect podcast for you jack it was russ it's gonna be funny back did it better

[84:27]while we were doing this podcast i got a text from a woman i've been on a date with

[84:32]and i had to play it in a robot voice but it said hey russ it was nice knowing you i am no longer

[84:38]interested in this i can't be with someone who confuses voltron with the thundercats

[84:43]kiss these big td's

[84:45]goodbye

[84:46]that was so depressing i don't ever want to be broken up by the computer voice again that

[84:55]was terrible i don't know she said kiss these big titties goodbye i think there's an opening

[84:58]holy shit guys
