Tom Petty: Wildflowers (1994)
[0:00]Where are you wearing underwear? I'm sure. College me, I'm sure I had lots of clean underwear just sitting around, okay? Not a big deal to me. Definitely remember doing laundry. Just surrounded by clean undies and sheets. Just washing my sheets like on a bi-weekly basis. Just imagine sleeping in a bed that smells like my crotch. Like that is... And by the way, Aaron, I'm still thinking about how your penis doesn't smell. I've been thinking about that all week. In 2020, four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums That's signed by Rolling Stone magazine. This resulted in a text chain that celebrated music, Excreted the order, and led us to make this podcast. But my penis has been playing tricks on me too. Because I was always like, well, there's one place I'll never grow pubic hairs. And that's on the shaft of my penis. Do you guys know anybody who can do penis tricks? No. I don't. No. No. Can anybody name like five different penis tricks right now on the podcast? There is the wristwatch, of course. I've seen the wristwatch. You want to see it again? Or is there about to? Oh, no. Oh, no. He does seem to be struggling with something.
[1:00]John, what are the least five names of penis tricks right on top of your head? Well, you got the snail, the hot dog, the hamburger. The wristwatch. The wristwatch is kind of the go-to. And then there's the birdbath. There's the birdbath, right? Isn't there a birdbath? There's a birdbath. Yeah, that's a good one. There's the Eiffel Tower. Eiffel Tower is really funny. That's just for you. Just throw everything out and get a good poll. I do one called the bright pink bird's nest. A lot of sticks. What's the pink part? Why do I ask these questions? Never mind. I'm pretty sure it's referred to as my glands. We are far from expert. We promise to do almost no research. All opinions are our own unless you disagree. Please sit back and enjoy. Beck did it better. At least that's what my wife calls it. I don't know. We are all the way up to album 214.
[2:00]And from 1994, it's somebody who always reminds me of my dad's advice. You don't ever want to sweat the petty stuff. But son, you always want to pet that sweaty stuff. It's Tom Petty with the wildflowers. Okay. And I'm here with one, two, three, four, five other guys. I'm here with five guys that want to talk about it. But before we can talk about who's here. Okay. We've got it. We've got a special treat for them. Because indeed, we do have a radio station this week that we're going to turn on. Okay. It's Tom Petty. It's on KSTO. It's on 93.1. All right. So let's listen to hear what's on the radio. Maybe it has something to do with this album. And now I have a bigger audience that's going to listen to this song. And I can look at their faces for feedback instantaneously. This will definitely be great. Every joke so far I've told has hit like crazy. Here we go. Welcome to KROB. K-R-O-B. And it's getting close to Thanksgiving, which means our minds turn toward food.
[3:00]Some of us love stuffing, turkey. And some of us, God only knows what we're going to be eating on Thanksgiving. Oh, yeah. We all know Aaron really loves Pete. But don't forget the weird shit he eats. Woo! Aaron eats like it's the apocalypse. He thinks a good side is some cactus. I've been thinking about that, too. Like, a lot. You think about me a lot. I do. His average dinner fare. The meal sounds like a dare. He'll order tacos. Then add tripe. It's fucking gross. Aaron eats weird fucking meals. Yeah, Aaron eats weird fucking meals. Aaron eats weird fucking meals. It's unreal.
[4:00]Your fucking meals. I like to think this song is coming out on its own. Everybody's like, who's Aaron? Do you want oysters from a tin? Or how about some squash blossoms? Oh, man. I do sound really weird when you put it this way. No. And if you think I'm just being mean, Aaron's paid me. He made money for dandelion greens. It's true. Guilty. When Aaron's talked about his treats. Twice he's mentioned types of yeast. Both mooch and corn smut. Why can't he order normal stuff? Aaron eats weird fucking meals. Aaron eats weird fucking meals. Aaron eats weird fucking meals. It's unreal when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time.
[5:00]A lot of dead space in this song here, Liz. I was going to do a full video where I'm spinning around in a room like Tom Petty did. Instead, all I did is dress like Alice in Wonderland. No relation. Listen, this is Beck Did It Better. We're a podcast. We're talking about the Rolling Stone top 500 album list of all time. And we're talking, is the list good? Is it bad? Is it maybe a Sisyphean ordeal that you're stuck with? It ruins almost every weekend. I've got five guys who agrees with Tom Petty on this album. And Russ, when he started going steady with his roommate. What? Fuck those heartbreakers. Get him out of here. No more heartbreakers. We don't need him. Heartbreakers not on this album. I didn't realize that. No. I've got special guest Joe from Woodbury. Joe, how are you? Everybody but the drummer. Yeah. That would suck.
[6:00]What did? It's like, yeah, I want all the heartbreakers back. Listen, can I talk to you outside? I know you hear those drum noises coming from inside. I got to talk to you about that. I've got special guest Joe from Woodbury. Joe, how are you doing tonight? I'm doing great, Rob. I appreciate you guys having me on to talk about my favorite album of all time. So I can't wait to chat with Carney about this one. Oh, Joe, we don't use last names on this podcast. That was the last name. What are you talking about? No, he's an actual carnival worker. Now we can reveal us about. Now we know. His hands smell like cabbage. I have to say this about carnivals, though. And I'm sorry, Joe, to interrupt you. I do think it would have been fun to go see strippers at the county fair. You know what I mean? When that was a thing like they'd had the tent with the strippers in it. Like, I think you go to the county fair with your kids. Yeah, you're getting some mini donuts. Okay, you're going on to rise where you know they're not put together. Well, and then you go over and see buxom toothsome women that travel the country with a carnival taking their clothes off.
[7:00]Odd as hell. And then next to them, they have like, hey, here's a here's the snake kid. He's got a snake head. You're like, man, back to the stripper tent. I think Joe. Sorry about the beard and strippers, Rob. Oh, yeah. I'm in the right tent. Yeah. Yeah. So. So what I have, Rob, what lies ahead? I have no way of knowing. But under my feet, the grass. The grass is growing. It's time to move on. Time to get going. Wow. Matt, I told you'd be prepared for the podcast. Never a doubt. I never had any doubt. Never a doubt. I've got Russell in Minneapolis. Russell, how are you doing? I'm doing good, Rob. That picture you sent me, that thing you would like us to try in Vegas. It turns out I'm actually going to be a conscious, conscientious objector to that position. I told you, Russell, I will pay you for your stretch labs visits. But you got to start now. It's going to take weeks and weeks to be able to do that. Okay. Conscientiously object. And by the way, Joe from Woodbury coming on for his favorite album. I hope somebody's wife is taking notes.
[8:00]Okay. Some people are actually trying to help out with the podcast. I've got Matt in Minneapolis. Matt, how are you doing? Good. You know, the one thing I actually planned for was to have my line today be, you don't Know how it feels to be me, but I have to say like somewhere I got skipped or something Like the counting's off or something. So it's think of be what you will. I've got a little space to fill. I don't know. I don't know why. I don't know why I'm off a pot or two. It's like, it's like a missed one. It's like they skipped you. I got John and he died. John, how are you doing? Hey, I'm going to show you. Have a good time. Nice. And finally, I've got Aaron. Now, Aaron was telling me earlier, he was doing some research and he realized one of His favorite video games, Mortal Kombat. And John, it's good you're here for this because I wanted to, I think you'll like this. Mortal Kombat is actually based on a Nordic religion song. Oh, interesting. Yeah, it was a Finnish hymn. All right, let's see.
[9:00]You wrecked me, Rob. Let's talk about Tom Petty without the heartbreakers. Oh, I'm going a little faster. Sorry, I forgot you're there. We've got to go. We don't, we simply don't have time for this. Now listen. Too many guys. We've got too many guys. I've made some miscalculations. We're in desperate need of voicemails. We have no voicemails. Please. It's been dry as a bone in voicemail land. Send us voicemails. Okay. Not that I'm insulting this voicemail, by the way. I'm lodging a formal complaint about the John Candy movies. Oh. How do you not include and conclude that planes, trains, and automobiles is clearly John Candy's best movie? Now, Russell, what did we conclude was his best movie? And I don't even think that's what we were doing, right? We were doing some weird boundaries that you had put out. Uncle Buck won, I think. I think it was Uncle Buck, but then I topped it with Great Outdoors. It was Great Outdoors, right. I kind of went over the top on you, but it wasn't a tournament. It was King of the Hill, The Winner Stays, right? It's you keep winning, you keep playing. But I think it was Uncle Buck or Great Outdoors. But I think Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a pretty damn good movie, right?
[10:00]Oh, it's a classic where they're doing the mess around. I mean, that's like a, that's a, that's a, it's a fun scene. And then at the end when he does his bit where he's like, oh, I got to get home to my wife. And then he ends up at this place for Thanksgiving. Spoiler alert. Yeah. I think it's a great movie. I don't know. But Uncle Buck is fun, too, when he wants to cut off a teenage kid's penis. You know what I mean? Yeah. That's one of my favorite parts of that. Is there a little similarity there? Yes, Aaron. It happens. Every time I drive by, you see the sign that says wrong way. Do not enter on the highway. I always, I just turn to my kids every single time and say, wrong way. How do they know which way we're going? Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. They must be drunk. There is one thing in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles when I saw it a while ago. The beginning, he's racing for the cab and he's racing against Kevin Bacon. And this opens up a whole new world of six degrees to Kevin Bacon. Because I, in that game, I always am going back to a few good men.
[11:00]So you got to get back to Cruz. You got to get back to Demi Moore. You got to get back to like four or five Nicholson, right? Yeah. But man, when you got John Candy or Steve Martin as direct options from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles to Kevin Bacon, That opens the game wide up. And I actually almost sent a text to you guys and had the text ready. And I stared at it for like a minute. I was like, if I send this, like they might just kick me off the chain, right? I can't text. I can't text this. Russell, can I tell you? I've never had that thought of like, I should send this. I'm like, send away. Russell, you should be torpedoes away on any text. You always send. Always full send. Aaron, John, Joe, do you guys ever think about what you're going to text on the chain and then delete it? Or what's your style when it comes to sending text to the group text? Yes. I've typed things out in full things and went back and said, no one really wants to see this. Or I know someone who's going to be offended by this. So it's out. Is it usually Aaron? Is it usually Aaron or not? Just between us? Yeah. Oh, it's Aaron.
[12:00]Hey, Joe, that Matt Gaetz thing you and I had going back a few days ago. It's a good thing we kept that on our private chain. That's funny when we get the guests on us. It's got to be the first time Joe has ever called me Aaron in the 20 plus years I've known him. I learned my lesson quick. Can't talk about carnivores on here. Can't talk about people's last names. Strippers names. Rosie Perez was on tonight. I agree with what Aaron. Was saying before the podcast. The president has the right to nominate who he wants. Okay. And I think we should just accept. You know, who's going to be in who's going to be in big business with the No fluoride. It's those dentists. Oh my God. What if it happens? And like your grandkids are so much smarter than you. And it was a fluoride. Your teeth are rotten. I'm an idiot. Oh, well, yes, we should have sacrificed our teeth for our IQs. Back to my tick tock. John, you text quite a bit. You're probably a top five texter on the text chain of 15 guys. Do you ever think about what you're putting in or you just let it rip.
[13:00]I let it rip. I never once edit and stop. And I just let it rip. What I struggle with though, is if I'm busy and then I have to go back and figure out What's going on, I have to like, yeah, in reverse order, do I give the thumbs ups and The, and the, and so make some points in order of which they came or in reverse order. I don't know. I think he just goes through. Consciousness, man. Just join in where you can. Our text chain has taken a big step up when John from Edina and Peter from St. Paul kind of did the undertaker and came back alive and we're back in our lives. I guess it's true. This text chain for the group went a lot better now that those two are back in action. It's true. And we've got Russ to thank for that. I tell people all the time in my work, if you're a male, if you're a male, who's in The forties, you need to be on a text chain with a 10 year friends. You know what I mean? It's just, you need somewhere where you can be like, look at this. I saw a pig and it has a huge boner in your life.
[14:00]You remember when I had, I saw that horse at the zoo with a huge cock and I said it To you guys, I was like, I don't, I don't have anybody else to send this to in my life. Okay. Nobody like nobody would care about this. And so that's why I have you guys there. And you guys are like, wow. Those horse cock texts do not go over as well with the new coworkers that you just meet For sure. I was going to say, John, Joe's old college roommate is probably the least texture. And I've always wondered, like, is he constantly just putting the dirtiest shit in there and Then staring at it for a few minutes and then hitting delete. You heard him, right? So he talked about it last time we were together. He talked about, he tries to listen to the pod, but he always listens with his wife when They're driving or whatever. She can't stand the pod. So he doesn't get to listen to the pod. That's not a good idea. Why? He texted us and said her voluminous chest heaves up and down. She's so mad. So we're like, John, you don't have to put that every time. It doesn't matter. Yeah. It doesn't matter what her supple bosom looks like.
[15:00]It's time for. I don't even know how to spell decolletage. I was so impressed by John, actually. I thought that was really good. Roland, go on, Aaron. How's it going with you? It's going great. Have I told you guys about my favorite songs lately? I've been keeping a list. I decided I should finally keep a list of my top five favorite songs. It's a great idea. If happy birthday is on there, I know we got this list. It's not. No, it's not. But I did. So I don't know if I'm going to go through the whole list of five right now because I keep changing it. But I wanted to tell you guys, I was really proud of myself. I finally played the Top Gun anthem during a work meeting. Not sure how it went over. Not sure how that went over. What are you talking about? No. You're not sure how it went over? What's the setup? What's the meeting about? You know, we need a full rundown of this. Yeah, of course. Listen. I mean, just. I'm going to wake my wife up yelling about this and she's going to come out and I'll be like, Aaron played Top Gun anthem. She'll be like, I get it. I'm going to do whatever you need to do.
[16:00]Rip his ass a new one. Oh, I don't remember how it went over. Aaron, you don't remember how this went over. You must have been sweating bullets. I do live dangerously. You're on Microsoft Teams, right? So, I was like. Right now, our earnings are inverted. International relations. So, we're in a meeting talking about analytics and health. Healthcare and my boss is we're supposed to do is our department spotlight. So, it's like a group of people a bunch of dorks talking about dorky stuff. Yeah. And my boss was like, well, this XYZ has been going on since 1986. And she's like, here's what else is going on in 1986. Top Gun was in the theater. And I was like, this is it. This is my chance. I've never had an opportunity to play the Top Gun anthem, which is my number one song of all time right now. Yeah. And so I quick had to figure I'm Googling like how to share sound on a Microsoft Teams meeting. And then when it was my turn. You're into it. But you don't know, man. You've got to close out every damn browser you've ever looked at before you pull a stunt like that. Right? And it's just like on this podcast where like I'm the person who keeps it going for Rob, right?
[17:00]Like he knows he's funny if I'm laughing. That doesn't happen on a Microsoft Teams meeting. Like maybe someone gives you like the thumbs up reaction that like goes up on the screen. When everyone's laughing out loud, everyone's muted. It was 8 a.m. On Monday. I was like, I have to do it. I absolutely cannot. Let this moment go by. They come back in and one guy is not there. It's just a big pill bottle on the table. Empty pill bottle. Did you get it up and going, Aaron? I got up and going. I played it. Yeah, I was giving my department spotlight on here's what my team is and what we do. How much did you play? Did you like sit there for a little bit too long? Like maybe three to five minutes? Honestly what? I think I didn't play enough. I think I only played. Did you play the air guitar? Did you go air guitar with it? I didn't. No, I didn't do that. I think I only got about 30, 45 seconds in. Because another nice thing about this song is like it gets this song gets going right away. Yeah. And it is repetitive. I have to say this. Anytime I think about Top Gun, I can only think about one thing. And that is, would I want to click my teeth together like Iceman does in that scene?
[18:00]I can't do it. I'm afraid mine would shatter. When I would see, that made, I was like, that guy's a true badass. He doesn't care about his teeth clicking together. Like that would tear. If my teeth made those noises, I'd be like, oh, I got to talk to you more today. I got to leave. And Rob, he's got to do that like on a regular basis. You don't just go and try that on a whim, right? You've got to do that all the time. It's like you're. Your machismo move. Yeah. I want to. I'm going to get a number two at McDonald's. Click. You know what I mean? But yeah, this one, I think it's right now. So this one. And did I tell you guys this? This one in Like a Prayer. You play this. You play the Top Gun anthem and Like a Prayer back to back. That's a party right there. If you do it. Yeah. Try it sometime. Try it anywhere you are. It works. But I was really proud of myself. I got to actually. The end of the song stinks. Yeah. It's long. I played like when we're going to play soccer. My son and I'd be like, OK, like we're getting ready to get the soccer socks on. I put on the Top Gun anthem and he's like, OK, I guess it's soccer. And he doesn't care about soccer at all.
[19:00]So it's it's like a little. It's like, Dad, not cool. You mean Living on a Prayer? On Lovie? No, Like a Prayer. Like a Prayer? Just like a prayer. Like a Prayer rules. Gonna take you there. Yeah, this soccer ball is not my favorite ball to kick. John, I'm with you. They've got some confusion over songs, I think. That's kind of. Yeah. That's crazy. Embarrassing. No, if you played the Top Gun anthem and then play Like a Prayer right after that. I think you're confusing Madonna. Followed by Borderline right after that? Are you confusing Madonna with Bon Jovi, Arad? I'm just telling you to play those two songs back to back and they will work. John, you and I are here at this right? This is embarrassing. This is shameful. You're confusing a Madonna song with Bon Jovi's song. No, I'm not. I didn't say Bon Jovi. What are you talking about? I love Madonna. Wow. John, are we crazy? He said Bon Jovi. I didn't say Bon Jovi. I would never have said Bon Jovi.
[20:00]Are you thinking about a Madonna song, Pyromania? The other thing is you talked about weird stuff I eat. I went to the grocery store yesterday and they were out of persimmons. And I really have had a real nude love of persimmons. Because they just like they fall in people's yards around here. Like no one eats them. But I finally got some. Where are they? Over, under, over, under, over 0.5 of the five guys of this podcast. Who knows what that is? Under. Under. That's five thumbs down. If it's a fruit that tastes like cinnamon toast crunch, I think I would actually love it. Because that's what I'm picturing right now. I mean, it has like kind of like a sweet, like a cinnamony vanilla type taste. It is. I think it's a fruit. It's orange. And it has like, and there's different kinds. There's Fuyu. I think it's a fruit. There's Fuyu persimmon. No, it's a fruit because it has seeds on the inside. So there's Fuyu persimmons and there's a chia persimmons. Yeah, let's look at a persimmons.
[21:00]And the Fuyu, I really just like slice them thin. Okay, so he was, Russell Simmons was the head of Def Jam. For Simmons. Okay, he ran a fitness program. And then later a podcast was about, oh, that's Richard Simmons. Oh, that's Richard Simmons. God, I screwed that up. That's so terrible. But they were out yesterday. I was disappointed. He was injured and he wanted to buy a whole turkey. Oh, that's tiny Timmons. I've been sleeping on them for a long time and they're actually quite delicious. Now I eat them with yogurt and granola. This is not a fruit. Look at a persimmon. I've never seen, I've never heard of that. Never once. They're like, they're on trees everywhere out here. They look gross. They look like tomatoes. That's like half tomato, half pepper. Yeah. Oh. Oh. At some point, like strawberry season's over. Peach season. Peach season is over. You got to do something. You can't just eat bananas all winter long. Stone fruit season's over. There's no stone fruit. You got to have something. I mean, you can't put oranges in your yogurt. Russell. Russell. You can't start eating almonds again, man.
[22:00]Russell, what would have to happen in your house for you to eat a persimmon, do you think? Like what kind of, what has gone wrong in the house where you're eating, where you pick Out a persimmon and you're like, this is what I'm going to eat today. I mean, I could see it being ordered by accident on a, we're into it. No, no, no, no, no, no. That's not what I said. I said, you eat it. Yeah, that's not happening. Anyway, we've got a lot of guys. We don't have time to go into my food proclivities. I want to know how it's rolling, going with Joe. Going well for me. So I want to start this. There's a couple of things I want to get cleared up. So there were a couple of the biggest cliffhangers I've ever had. So from episode 211 all the way to 212, I had to wait a full week to figure out if Rob's Daughter was going to eat the almond joy. So I didn't know this was going to be as big of a cliffhanger. But as far as the time went, and when I got to hear about it, it was a full week before I learned that Rob's daughter did not eat the almond joy. But prior to that.
[23:00]Can I say this, Joe, real quick? Speaking of biggest cliffhangers, hello, I'm not going to let you fall. That's that's a big cliffhanger. That's what happens when you record a double. I know. And the kid comes home and you're at like two in the morning. I mean, I think she's sneaking in. Her parents don't know better. Nope. Her dad is up recording his podcast, which approximately 85 people a week listen to. Yet he has given hours of his life away from his family to do it. That's what we're doing. We're doing that tonight, right? Recording a double. You're so proud. Oh, yeah. They're ready. Yeah, they love this stuff. All right. But hey, the second biggest cliffhanger, and I can't be the only listener that is still Wondering what happened. Matt, you started a ladder story and then got interrupted in between and never got to Finish. Oh, no. About how you can just get it. You got into places by just carrying a ladder and then you had a buddy who tried it and You got to the point where you said, and he started to walk through at a show with a ladder And then Rob came in with some big story.
[24:00]Got you totally off topic and we never finished. No, it's like something like I saw on Instagram or whatever. They were just saying like their friend said, if you walk in anywhere to a movie theater. So there's two guys that had like a long ladder and they're both had like, it looks quasi Like worker dudes kind of a thing. And they just walked through the gate of the movie theater and just kept walking right past The concession stand. And somebody's filming him the whole time, set the ladder down, went right into the movie Theater and they saw their movie. So it was just like an Instagram thing or something. So I didn't actually have a buddy, but I think we should maybe in Vegas, we should try that. You'll be there this year. All right. To be fair though, I'm convinced right now that you could walk into a movie theater without A ladder with just normal walking in because there doesn't seem to be people checking at Movie theaters. Anymore. If I, I don't know why I'm so, do you guys go to a movie theater where there's people Checking? Is this just a New York thing? There wasn't for a long time. And then I like, I'm thinking specifically of Southdale.
[25:00]And then we go to Eden Prairie mall every once in a while. That movie. That's off of Xerxes. Well, Xerxes, it's, it's where Xerxes turns into York. Technically you're flying cloud drives over there somewhere. Yeah. Southdale. See Rob, look at, there's five guys laughing at this bit right now. Five. I'm no, I'm. I'm not laughing at any bit that has a punchline flying cloud drive, but there wasn't. And now there is, they seem to have like the little things that have the little pull Across, barriers or whatever there seems to be. But that person, if you just walked up and said, I'm walking in, they're not, they're Not going to say anything to you. You could walk right in. And there was nothing that pisses me off more than when I buy tickets. And you know, when you go with a family, all of a sudden it's like a hundred dollar night And you're like, what's going on? Cause your kids only will get King size candy bars. Your wife doesn't want to get the same soda as you. You just got to sneak that stuff in. Oh yeah. Well you'll never guess what Jenny sneaks in. Do you want to guess? Dental floss.
[26:00]Popcorn that she pops at home. No, that makes no sense. Now that is the word. Like the only place where you can get actually good popcorn is at like a, at a movie theater. You don't have a flavor call at home. There's no way. No, I need that flavor call as, as Aaron knows. I, but I do, but then you go walk in and then there's nobody taking the tickets. I'm like, I'm so fucking stupid. Like I just. You know what I mean? It's like the emperor has no clothes. Why did I pay for this ticket? It's the worst. So will you will steal stuff from airports, but you won't bring in like go to CVS and buy a. Oh no, I will. Candy and walk. I will, but it is my fear that I will get caught. I have a really, I'm more scared of getting caught than I think most people are. At a movie theater, but not at the. No airport. I can just say, I tried to scan it. Movie theater. If I'm a fat guy and they pat me down and I've got tons of junior mints, I'll be like. You know what I mean? So I'm sorry, Joe. I didn't mean to. No, man. I appreciate that. I was waiting to hear the end of the story. So it only was three episodes later to hear they got into the movie theater.
[27:00]It was all. They got it. All good. They're all laughing. They thought it was the greatest thing in the world. Yeah, that is good. So carry a ladder wherever we need to go. I like it. Joe, you can see why I interrupt these guys all the time. Joe, hold on. Rob, take your headphones off a sec, Rob. Joe, can you really see why? It's the Rob show, right? So he just, if he hasn't talked for 30 seconds and we're talking and giving a story, he needs to talk. So we just let him go. We just, this is his podcast. It's what we love about Rob. So. Right. All good. Yeah. So. Look at it right now. He's trying to be quiet. He wants to be quiet. Well, you guys don't get to hear my ladder story now. Sorry. Rolling going. So not much for me, actually. I'm kind of like in board phase of life right now. My kids are all done with all their sports and I found myself like. Wandering to watch like other people's kids play sports because I'm so bored right now. My kids don't do anything in the winter. So. Hey, are you, rumor is, are you babysitting your kids?
[28:00]Oh what? I am on, I almost was going to wear my, I'm on dad duty hat, but I knew that Aaron wouldn't appreciate that. So I'm on dad duty. He's on dad duty all weekend. Wow. In the closet. You're babysitting your kid. Yeah. My wife is on a, a girl's trip. What I found out. And I texted you guys earlier is girls plan out their trips much more to the minute and second. Yeah. Down to the hour. And as I told you guys, I'm just glad that we hang out together because the itinerary literally is like, show up when you want to show up. We'll watch some sports and then we'll fly home when we're done. Go eat some crab legs. Yeah. Make sure you're in the book by 9am to get your bets in. Imagine being in Vegas and somebody goes, Guys, we're behind schedule. I wouldn't. I said the day it happens is the day I'm done with the trip. So it's not on the schedule that we're going to get too high and then get in a limo and we're all going to freak out over the limo.
[29:00]That's not the plan. The sex workers have a half hour window. They will be here when they're here. It's fine. Yeah. Oh, I'm with Peter and he's got to cash out a ticket on the way to the airport. The most insane thing I've ever seen in my life. So I do. I love going to watch the other people's kids sports. It's fine. It passes my time, but I'm definitely on this countdown now for guys still two months out. But these two months out until we actually are in Vegas again and get to do only two months. What we do over the phone sometimes throughout the week, but we get to do it in person. So can't wait. Always one of my favorite weekends of the year. Joe, in two months, we will be at New York from the 18th to the 22nd. New York. New York. We'll see you there. Wait, are we in New York again? So Joe, what's the thing that gets out of control at your house when your wife's not around? Is it late bedtimes? Is that you guys are ordering pizza?
[30:00]What's the thing that you guys do different when your wife's not around? Yeah, I think the big thing is we just we realize that she is really good and in charge of like she does on her trip, the schedule. So it's like we eat dinner at this time and when it's gone, it is it's frozen pizza. It's like, let's get to Canes and get chicken fingers. And it could be we could be in at 830. 30 at night. So I think that's the biggest thing. And then, yeah, bedtime is whenever. I mean, I'm in here. I have no idea what they're doing. But I could ask yesterday what's for dinner. And I was flabbergasted by the question. I was like, that's a great question. I have no idea. Says the guy who orders food into the apartment from Las Vegas when we're there. That's dad of the year. I remember that one, though. He tells me, shit, I got to order dinner for my kids. And an hour and 30 minutes later, we walk out the door to go to the next casino. I said, did you ever order dinner? He goes, oh, fuck. That happens all the time. They're like in a Starbucks for a half hour.
[31:00]Dad, did you order? I'm like, I'm sorry. I talked. I was talking to somebody after I talked to you. So I immediately forgot what we were talking about. Love it. Yeah. So I'm in board phase. So if anyone has recommendations on a hobby or something to pick up here for two months Before I get to go to Vegas, just let me know. I'm all for any good recommendations. I'm picturing Russell. Watching some other kids, some other people's kids play sports. And in my picture, in my mind, he's also eating a persimmon at the same time. Both of those things are equally likely in my head. Equally likely. All right. I'm passing it on. Rolling, going. How's it going with you, Matt? By the way, I got a hotel room at the Tropicana. Tropicana? Yeah. You probably got a good deal. Good deal. Really good deal. Awesome deal. Dynamite deal. Yep. Wow. Wow. Wow. That was really. There's too many people on tonight, so I'm just, I'm going to go really short. I am also babysitting my kids, but we did. We, we go get donuts before school.
[32:00]Because they're like. Fucked up square donuts. Square donuts? Yeah. No square donuts. You're getting donuts before school with your kids? Oh, yeah. We just leave a half hour early. We go to Lund's over there on 62nd and Penn. It's on the south side. So call that Crosstown, Matt. Crosstown? Yeah. That. Matt. So. What? Can I be your kid? Can I come and live with you for a bit? I mean, we, we, we get, we, we get one of the little things of a cantaloupe and we buy some, Some cheese. What? A little something. We have a little fruit too. What the fuck are you talking about? Cantaloupe and cheese and donuts? I get a little fruit and cheese. Do you hear that? You guys know what I eat. Do you hear what Aaron, Matt, do you hear what Aaron just said? Are you happy with yourself now? Aaron said it sounds good. He likes it. Oh, there you go. Oh, man. Shit. Hey, Dad. Thanks for the donuts. Listen. Yeah. We really like the donuts. Okay. I'm not going to lie. The cantaloupe and the cheese though. I want to talk about that because it seems like a strange combination.
[33:00]Rob, you already have two for the list for part two of the song from today though. So add persimmons and add cantaloupe and cheese. Exactly. I know. I got a whole song about Matt next week. What rhymes with the cantaloupe? Oh my God. I hope the album next week is, I hope the album next week is cantaloupe. I hope the album next week is cantaloupe. That'll be easy. Flip Fantasia. Joe, you sent out that itinerary and our wives will be in the same city This weekend. So I sent it to Sarah and said, just so you know, you might see Joe from Woodbury's wife Hanging out as well. I texted her and told her the same thing about your wife. Rolling, going. John, how's it going with you? Well, I did not expect to be here tonight. I came to perform a thing and then this just happened. And I'm just happy to be here. It was by the grace of God. John, now you've been, you've turned into quite the celebrity on this pod.
[34:00]I mean, there's people that are like seeking you out in the real world public because, Because you're in the, you're on the school celebrations, religious ceremonies. Yeah. I'm a celebrity. It's fantastic. It's, it's, it's, it's kind of been overwhelming. I don't know what to do. I think sometimes I just roll up in a ball. Cause it's just, I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do about it. Hey, John, we just have one rule on the podcast. We usually don't sleep with our fans. Well, it's the only rule. That's most of the time. We're good. I tried to introduce a new guest. It's not worked. So babe, I got to talk to you about that hall pass thing. I've, I've joined this podcast just in case I run into you. I think this is where I'm going to go take this direction. And also why is your hall pass our landlord? Hey, so my role in going is flights are at an all time low for the national championship weekend,
[35:00]Which is when we're going to be in Vegas. We cannot advertise this to these plebes. We can't. We're going to New York. We're going to be there. We're going to New York. And flights are 250 bucks. And I just got an email from a dauber and his old busted wife at gmail.com. And they say they're big fans of the podcast and they're glad to hear about our new rules. That what? That should be the challenge of that should be the challenge of this year to see if somebody can get dauber to listen to the podcast. Yeah. And then one night and then the next day comes in and talks to Rob about the podcast. We should get a QR code shirt. That links to our podcast. Oh, my God. Yes. Oh, no. Aaron, how much embarrassing? How much high class trim, as you say, would you think we'd be?
[36:00]High class trim. Yeah. Hey, do you think Jamaican John will wear our shirt, Joe? He's your buddy. You think Jamaican John will wear our shirt if we pay him enough? I think he might. Yep. He's he's a good guy. Well, what does he always say? At the bottom of the staircase there? Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Jamaica John is a guy who has worked in Vegas and we've seen him how many years in a row? 17. Yeah. A lot. He is a strip show barker. Now, for those of you that do not go to Vegas every year and then talk about it for the rest of the year, a strip show barker, strip club barker is a guy who's standing on the sidewalk yelling for you to go to a strip club. And if you say, OK, you're immediately. We've heard loaded into a limo and take it to a strip club. Yeah. So what does Jamaica John say? Jamaica John says, who wants to go to Titty City? His main bark is who wants to go to Titty City?
[37:00]I mean, it's it's only because he's a Joe. I mean, this must have been 10 years ago. Joe was helping him for about two minutes one year trying to see who wanted to go to Titty City. So Joe was barking with him for a while. So it was very funny. Long time. I want to go long time ago. I would be. I would run for city council of that city. I have to. I think you'd like it in a landslide. Plates are great right now. Two hundred fifty bucks from Delta. One hundred fifty bucks from those shitty airlines that have no TV service. Aaron's Aaron's listening. Yeah. OK. Yeah. Yeah. I'm interested. What I'm struggling with is I live. I live very close to a to me store and I don't know if I'm going to join Russ and I'm going to. Yeah. Dude, I think I might just have some new luggage when I'm coming out. Oh, he's going to. Wow. I like it. Yeah. Yeah. Is that about like 70th and France there?
[38:00]Yeah. They call it the gallery. It's the gallery store. I purchased my backpack at John. I walked by it the other day. Yes. Michael's. I was not from Michael. You guys do that. I want to be. I want one of those Yeti cooler backpacks. That's what I'm going to bring to the last. Oh, there's a Yeti store. The UMI store because the UMI store is lights out. So, yeah, Russell, you planted the seed. I'm obsessed now and I've been just watching and I go in every week and Michael now knows me and he's like, hey, you back again and try on the backpack. Yeah, I'm going to try it on. Wait, wait, wait, wait. So you go. No, no, wait a minute. Russell, wait a minute. So looky Lou. You when you bought this bag, you go in and try on the bag. You seen he walks out without it. Did you try on a bag, Russell? When you went in and bought a bag, were you in there like a kid getting shoes and kind of being forced to walk around and be like, I walked in and I knew the one I wanted and I did put it on quick, but I guess it could have kept me over like I could have fallen over with it on it.
[39:00]I would have said. I'm taking it. There's no way I would have. There's no way I would have walked out without it. That's like when I bought my latest guitar. I went in and I was so embarrassed and I played one chord. I was like, this is good. I'll buy it like a twelve hundred. This is fine. So, John, you go in and you look at the backpacks and you walk out. You're like, I'm not ready yet. Yep. Yep. I'm like, yeah I'm really interested, but I'm not going to buy anything today. But can I see it and try it on? And I do. Sounds like a good Christmas present from the girl. I know. Well, I'm just hoping that. But the Chicago guy, what's his name? We'll just appreciate the update on the backpacks, because I know he was a big fan. He was trying to do some reverse psychology, but I think he liked hearing about those backpack stories. You want to hear more? I bet he's going to love this episode. Lots of inside baseball stuff on this episode.
[40:00]He's going to think it's great. The role going. Who's who's up here? Who do we have? Russell. I had a unique experience tonight. I had my first ever. I don't know. You would call it double Uber penetration. I had I was picked up. I was picked up twice by the same Uber driver in one night. Have you guys ever been picked up? No. You got picked up twice by the same Uber driver. That's a two hours later. We don't call them double penetration. Oh, sorry. Sorry. I didn't know what else to call it, man. But I was picked up, dropped off by this nice Uber driver at a cool restaurant. It's called J.D. Hoyt. Supper Club in downtown Minneapolis. Very cool. Oh, yeah. Right. Right. Right on the entrance to get on the three ninety four there across the Washington. Yeah. I think it's second. I think it's second. Right. Yeah. I can speak up for that right next to the strip club. I got an email from Rand at McNally dot com. And they said that bit sucks.
[41:00]Is that one of those exits off a three ninety four where it just drops you straight down There and it is to Washington going the wrong way. We get dropped off. This is a very short Uber ride, but it was like, oh, let's just we'll take the Uber. We'll get there. We'll get there on time or whatever. We're going to Uber back about two hours. Russell. Russell, can I ask why were you guys running late? Is there a reason? Was there something to blame? I was wondering why you needed an Uber to get from one place right next door. But I get it now. I had to wipe the glitter off first. Then it was fine. So anyways, we get this. We get this Uber. We get dropped off and then we get the Uber back and the car pulls up and I jump in and It's the same. Same Uber driver. Have you guys ever had the same Uber driver on two rides in the same day? Nope. Russell, did you get a pork chop? I did not this time, but I have had it before, Matt, and it is great. But you know what I was going to say about J.D. Waits? I love any restaurant that advertises world famous.
[42:00]We're the world famous buddy. So they've got the buddy bowl, which is like rice and beans. And you put some scallops or something. There's some cheese in it. It is amazing. The world famous buddy bowl, any restaurant that has something that they claim is world Famous. I am in on how about you guys? You got to go with it. I like it. Like, Russell, if it's like a world famous chocolate chip cookie, I'm like, I got to Have it. It's world famous world's best world's best cup of coffee. Yeah, you did it. You did it. Congratulations. So then but have a great time with this restaurant. We get picked up and immediately I realize I had just tipped the guy because An Uber the tip. Doesn't always you get out of the Uber and you tip them like two hours later And I clicked on the I was tipped on my next ride on the next ride. That's standard. But normally you're tipping them, but you're not getting into the same car that you rode Earlier. So I get into the car and I and then it shows up right there on his phone. Like Russell just tips. Yes. Cheapskate Russell.
[43:00]So so I my Uber ride was eleven dollars and it popped up one, three and five and I tipped Three. So I tipped the middle. Yeah, that's good. So like if I get back in that Uber after tipping three, does he look at me and be like That piece of shit? Or am I OK? Or what's where am I at? You're you're just fine. The fact you're kind of a middle of the road to just fine because there's Guaranteed as people who don't tip or they do just do the one dollar tip. So and I know the drive you're talking about and I think it probably cost you 50 cents. So you're really given like a 300 percent tip. The other thing I was going to bring up, Rob, I'm curious. The DVD tournament finals. How did it go? How did it go? I know you put that up on the Instagram a few weeks ago. What was the finale? Oh, no, there's no way. OK, no, this is such a big. We got a few of our listeners on that. This is one of their favorite bits. Let's hear the results. If you're going to have it, it's ready to go. Right. Second favorite next to going to the archive.
[44:00]OK, so I have found it immediately. Believe it or not, Aaron. OK, I've got it. Brass. Which DVD would you keep? And again. I was I knew this was going to happen. I was nervous. This is going to happen. This was on our better social media. Yes. Go there. If you want to talk to one of us, which DVD would you keep? And think about how dumb this is. Like you're like, oh, maybe I should get into this podcast. I'm going to look to see what they post on Instagram. And this is what we post. Which DVD would you keep? The Godfather or Dumb and Dumber? Yes. Did someone vote 100 times for Dumb and Dumber? The winner. The winner. Fifty two percent. Oh, 40 to 48 percent. So close. The winner is. The Godfather. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. I don't know what the least number of votes you can do to get to a 52, 48 vote percentage, But that seems sick to me.
[45:00]The fact that half of our fans think that Dumb and Dumber. Well what? I would have voted Dumb and Dumber. I don't think I voted. I saw on a plane ride. The other day that the Godfather was on a plane and it was like, the fuck if this is The greatest DVD ever, if they could put it on a plane, right? Like they should be like Fast and Furious five and stuff on a plane, not the greatest Film ever, supposedly. So I'm calling our listeners a bunch of dumb shits for the 52 percent that went that route. I think that is messed up. I think 13, 13 votes out of 25 is the lowest we can get. That's still a crazy amount of votes. Twenty five people are voting on our Instagram thing. There's 25 of you out there. It could be twenty five hundred. We don't know. Pretty good for a non-math major. Rolling on, Rob. How's it going with you? Listen, we missed it, but we're not going to miss it next year. OK, before we do this. What? Guys, I got a new kink I got to tell you about. I guarantee Rob was saving this for weeks when he had two extra audience members.
[46:00]Their kinks, but we'll never shame Okay, yeah, so just a warning guys. I am gonna be showing you porno on the screen. No Lot of that gotta edit it out. This is like when he tells us class. There's gonna be a little bit of nudity. Oh Listen, okay, I Have a new kink to tell you about and it is mostly because I read about it online because it has a great name and this kink is Loctober, okay, Loctober is where you go the entire month of October And somebody puts a cock cage on you and then takes the key and you have to wear the cage for the whole Month
[47:00]Okay, nothing now then your penis would smell that is actually what most of the forums are about believe it or not Is like How do I clean it and then they're like, well if If you're you know, if you're dom tells you that you could take it off. You could take it off And I was kind of like This might be a thing I get into next year. Like I kind of get bored around the fall There's just not much going on I'm like and you know what they actually the number two But here's the problem the number two thing on on reddit when they're talking about Loctober Is what do you do in an airport? And one guy's like I didn't take it off. I had to show to the guy at tsa I had to explain it to him and then he was like, I think he kind of liked it And I was like, no You made surprise. You're actually terrible with social cues The guy who's got his cock and balls locked in a cage. It doesn't have the key because these guys will give the key to somebody else So like if you got this thing like stuck on a hook in your hotel room You literally would not have a key to get yourself out. Your cock would be stuck in the cage How did you get up to the hook?
[48:00]What were you doing that your cocky? Okay, can I tell you actually what I was those are like I tell you what I was thinking actually Is that you kind of walked in and got scared and jumped up And then it hooked on something What? This sounds like a wily coyote cartoon. Now, you might think when you type in amazon cocky You jumped up and you might think when you type in amazon cocky is that nothing is going to come up But it actually does it's chastity devices and we have a lot of different selection here Okay, but they're all like how do we get here? They're all like 20 bucks That's again. I just got to say that's too cheap if I'm going to wear this for a whole month of october That's too cheap the first time october experience This one made me really sad I'm new to the world of chastity while I might have missed a couple of october days I don't have a key holder and my partner isn't even remotely interested in being one That's gotta suck doesn't it? That relationship's gonna last a long time that would be like I could see that too where I'd be like listen I know this is weird, but it's really important to me
[49:00]I do want to lock my cock and balls up for an entire month Can you hold on to the key because it gives me pleasure and my wife me like I am not remotely interested in doing that There's no way you would trust your your wife loses like her phone on the daily basis. There's no way The key to that. Oh god, that'd be so that would be bad Yeah, you'd have to stash extra for sure. I don't even know if she went on an airplane Keys are gone man. Yeah, it's frantically searching eba cockies lana cockies extra set I mean, can you imagine how much those cost you could charge her every one on ebay? God damn Oh my god The other thing Rob is this is like the only thing I could compare it to is I don't know If you guys ever go on a trip and you're gonna use the hotel safe like before you lock that safe You try that about 10 dozen times like you do not risk accidentally locking something in that safe So like could you like how many times you have to practice with the key to that cock cage before you're willing to like lock it
[50:00]That's one of the scariest sounds is when I hear my wife using the lock The like I'll be in the shower and I hear her using the safe in the other room. I'm like, no No, don't because it's happened twice where we've had to get the front desk to come and put like the code in Because she doesn't remember the combo It's the worst So obviously when you do lock turnover, you're gonna have to mail your key to someone is it someone on this zoom call Who would you choose? Oh, man? It's gonna be isn't that obvious don't you as she was meant to? He already did he already said I gotta say Matt with Matt holding the key to unlock my chastity It's pretty hot. You think about it. Okay next Next link and guys I wrote on here. Can I just tell you the note I wrote? Don't show them the link on amazon with the one with the urethral dilator. No, I can't I'm not Excuse me. You're saying nope that i'm not showing it to you I'll just put it. I'm not gonna show you because the urethral dilator is way bigger than I thought it was gonna be
[51:00]It's it was big. I was like god. I was like they're not kidding Oh cages this one is written by a erin Cages for larger than average dick I can't find a cage big enough to do this. I've ordered two sets of cages Read the headline again. You need to read the whole headline cages for larger than average dick parentheses not bragging That sounds like a Yeah, I've ordered two sets of cages from etsy sellers and both their xls were too small for me Where would one find larger equipment? Nobody has commented. There's no comments to this. They don't want to talk about it. So no one can help Is this your reddit page? Did you write this? Is that did you post that? Okay You think I would do a fake reddit post just to get more people listening to the podcast that would be crazy Anyway Geez, I almost went right into the rating system. That's too far We got extra guys on here just to talk away the sound you it's a good thing. We're getting to it already
[52:00]You know, it's a it's a rob reddit page if it's becketed it better cock cages or something about tori hunter It was rob who wrote it out the internet Jesus Every time the twin's supposed to be about tori hunter. I get in there can't help myself I know I said I was bored rob, but I think I'm going to take other people's advice on what I should be doing Well, I'm bored than yours I guess Well, sorry Aaron that you can't do locked over because your cock is too big I'm gonna be just fine I will say if you look up chassis devices on amazon, it does make me feel better about my penis size Because I did tell susanne. I was like, I think if I had a large penis my life would be totally different I'd be on a totally different trajectory So I would have been confident. I would have been like probably I would have just stood around looking in the mirror more The first thing that comes to mind when I think of you rob is not a lack of confidence Rob, I I bet you would have been a tight-ended college if you had a huge song
[53:00]You would have been a tight-ended not you know, why can I Did have a big dog That's a fact, okay Oh and guess who our other tight-end was that guy I'm not kidding that guy rustle wait. We only had two times throwing it down Okay I'm not looking at everybody's penis is there when I have respect. Well, you say who's our other tight end? You were like a real football program. You can play with only two tight ends I guess maybe in 2002 must have been the water where was growing up Did you ever hear about the prank that would do in the showers Or who did it? I don't think so where he would you would be taking a shower with your eyes closed He would just come up. He would just come up and pee on you while you're taking a shower So you'd be in the warm water. They'd be like, well, that's there's a really warm water on my leg And he'd be pissing on you and then this guy would be fucking massive and you're like one what? I can't do anything
[54:00]Ah, it's so funny you peed on me. It's definitely not gonna. I'm not gonna think about that when I'm 44 I mean, can you imagine my kids come out dead? Have you ever been peed on? Lots yes Yeah, listen episode 214 in my podcast. Yeah, right they would do that Where we're talking about kinks the worst thing about that is that you got to give him his keys back at the end of october 2 Can you imagine? I bet halloween would be extra fun though for lactober you'd be like, listen, I love halloween, but this is going to get crazy afterwards I mean, can you imagine just you just see me halloween. I hope somebody gives me a big blue grader, right? I'm gonna be so thirsty later. All right, listen Tom Petty in 1988, okay, he's with the willburys Oh, you didn't think I was going to start with the will the traveling willburys did you? But basically 1989 he he makes the album full moon fever. Okay, which has won't back down running down a dream free falling So already massive star 1991
[55:00]He puts out learning to fly and into the great wide open Then he's making a best of like a Greatest hits and he's like i'm going to throw in an extra song It's a song called last dance with mary jane So he's just like this guy is absolutely on fire for the late 80s just unbelievable Absolutely crazy And then he in 1989 he secretly signs a huge contract with Warner Brothers All right, that was the mba jam This album he makes this album it's produced by rick rubin. I didn't even realize that this is a rick rubin joint It means you did not watch the documentary that matt suggested to you a week ago. Is that am I right? Good. Yeah all rustle I remember matt suggesting that Okay I just didn't have time also. Literally half the documentary is rick rubin sitting there talking about making the album, right?
[56:00]And you know, I'll just say for the really deep cuts last dance with mary jane was written halfway between Recording this album. And so they wrote tom petty started writing this all stuff the solo album I'm using air quotes solo album He had to get out of his contract with I forget was it you know, he went with warner, but I forget who he didn't like But he had Something like that. He had to get two more songs for the best of that would close out his contract So the last song he went and wrote was Last dance with or what was it? Yeah, the last dance is mary jane. He wrote it halfway. So he was right. He wrote that song with The heartbreakers all of them during that time So it it's during this it wasn't before anything that was kind of a weird thing to me that he actually wrote that song Which is another banger. Yeah use that anymore, but wrote it while he was writing this album He couldn't he everything he touched was gold. It's crazy. Yeah My this
[57:00]So but he was since like he was doing the british thing where he would really singles that were not on an album necessarily He had to finish two for like his greatest hits album to finish So he jumped over to do the two but I love the story because two new songs because he would leave Like he would find a total different studio and do it all separately because he didn't want to mix the two of What he was doing with his solo album with what he needed to finish for the greatest hits It's awesome that yeah, so you can just ditch like the guys you work with for so long and just do stuff on your own I mean you could try it and then they know maybe like throw out one or two episodes and see how it goes See what the public you don't end up together anyway because you just turns out you're just stuck with all of it Rob you could pick one of your favorites and just do like a spin-off or something Hearing your voice john is bringing me back down to earth. I gotta admit I was gonna say it was like a few weeks ago and rob made erin and I record on teams when matt wasn't around He was like we better not do zoom we better do teams
[58:00]Matt you were like the heartbreakers drummer of that episode. He just Hey, man. Sorry. We need to talk. You're off. Yeah We'll get into that at this time and they asked him like why didn't you I Is it in the documentary why you didn't use the heartbreakers because basically came on said well We just didn't want to say it was all five guys and I was like, well, that's a weird answer Joey you go ahead. I'll fill in yeah, so the reason we've been putting like quotes around solo album is He like he wanted to go produce it on his own So he wanted to just do his own thing where it was his own thoughts and everything he wrote But they it's funny because you go through and as you start watching the documentary about it He's acting like a solo and then it just comes in that the heartbreakers were On basically all instrumentals on everything he did so they were really a part of it It was just he had the freedom with Ruben to kind of produce it how he wanted and write the songs on his own And then they would come in and do the music with him Yeah, I think I mean he started out by saying I don't want to do another heartbreakers album
[59:00]So he started out without him and then they're trying to find Musicians to fill in more session musicians and ultimately they kind of just Take the end around to come back to that the heartbreakers particularly the couple of guys that he does some harmonies with You know the piano player things like that they're the best they're the they're that's who he works best with And so it was basically everybody but the drummer seemed to have a bad relationship with those guys Yeah, he just couldn't he couldn't handle the energy from the dream. He's kind of sound like a very negative guy Who's always kind of put stuff down like Tom Petty would come in and play a couple of the songs that he's doing on the solo thing and he was She says that's not a very good song I think when Tom Petty says hey guys my next album It's just going to be the band's just going to be called Tom Petty If I was in the heartbreakers, it'd be like you're great Tom Whatever you say because you know that axe is coming down. That's what I got out of that You know the documentary. I mean crepes. Those guys are just fawning over Tom Petty like because he basically writes everything, right?
[1:00:00]I mean I was looking at a little bit of the credits And some of them have like Tom Petty plus I think one of the guys named was Mike and one of the guys You know Tom Petty and Mike and Tom Petty and Alan But I mean 95% of Tom Petty and the heartbreakers was songs that were written by Tom Petty Maybe like a little bit of somebody else I picture Rick Rubin sitting with me later and being like listen for your new podcast You need a guy who eats really fucked up food I'm like, I do know a guy like that You're never going to believe it but I You said he wants to go solo But then it felt and it felt like that through the documentary that they were just so willing to be like, yeah We're in as soon as you wanted them. They were like we're in Okay, is this a must watch documentary? It's unbelievable we've gotten that message. Yeah, probably a top 10 music documentary I've seen right top five at top 10, right? Yeah, yeah The only thing I think Jeff Lynn and the famous Jeff Lynn right John
[1:01:00]He was producing all of Tom Petty's albums up until this and was is that right? Yeah, they were the traveling wheelbarrows together Yeah but Jeff Lynn's way of doing things was very piecemeal So we're going to do the lead guitar Well lay down that track now we're going to do the bass now We'll do you know, there was piecemeal into a song Where Tom Petty in the documentary he says that he wanted to make a live music Album an album that sounded like they were playing a live So he at Rick Rubin never was officially hired to come be the producer He was just always hanging around because go ahead Rob Well, I just think you can hear it that this sounds like a live album I think the tone of it especially in these first five songs It's really a live album and to me the album it reminds me of is the Dolphins lament, which of course is my favorite Live album Rick Rubin had called somebody and said hey if I ever get you know, if you guys ever be a producer for Tom Petty
[1:02:00]Let me know. I'm a big fan and they basically said that you'll never Jeff Lynn does all of his production and never be able to do it And then all of a sudden he's out doing a solo air quotes solo album and he's just hanging around I don't think he ever had a contract. I don't know if he's getting paid or how he got paid, but you know, he was And everybody really calls Rick Rubin when they want to get to like the essence of their true sound right like strip all the Nonsense away My rule of thumb is if you're if you look down and your pubic hair looks like Rick Rubin looks in your chair It is time to shave your boss Rick Rubin looks like out of control pubic hair like if you put a bikini bottom on Rick Rubin's chin There'd be stuff coming out all over You knew we were going on spring break to my parents place in florida We've known about this trip The only other thing before we get going just to hear this Tom Petty was 40 years old when he did this So he did all of those other things up until we're all 43 44 years old
[1:03:00]He was 40 years old when he did this album. That was when he decided it's time to move on and do my own solo thing So he had massive amount of success You know early on in life. I mean he's he's clearly one of a generational Musicians with his songwriting and then he pivots to this which ends up being One of the greatest albums of all time if you like this album You will be happy to have you seen beyond wildflowers? This was supposed to be a double album 25 songs and Warner Brothers said supposed to be Yeah, Warner Brothers said no way right is that it? And so well, there's a there's a whole second deluxe version that has Various versions of the songs and there's lots of there's lots of bonus stuff along with the documentary I think they just had this is like an additional app like ten songs and everything after of which five of them Are absolute bangers like there's a song california erin. We should listen to it's called california It makes me think of you every time I hear it because I think california has been pretty good to you
[1:04:00]Yeah, go down man. I think if erin want to hear the song you've got to fight for your right to get the key Your package And they release all tom petty's I don't know if this is in the documentary But they did release all tom petty's albums into a high fidelity set except for this one Which you could only get on the pono player, which was mentioned by me last week neil diamonds now extinct high fidelity music service So anytime we talk about the pono player, I'm gonna be sure to bring that up. So let's get into wildflowers This song Was not released as a single off this album. Is that the craziest thing you've ever heard? Oh really? Yeah, but it did get all the way up to number 16 on the hot rock charts You know what the number one song on the hot rock charts it was during this time It was probably something by Lava Lava was the number one hot rock On the list. Oh god. What? Did the wizard so this song I
[1:05:00]I just want to say if you really listen to this song You think about your kids Listen to the lyrics You're you can't help but shed it to you. It is Unbelievable from a song writing sample. So I'm not gonna make any of us do it here because I don't want to see john cry again I've seen him cry too many times, but do you listen to the lyrics? I just challenged somebody to put on this song and just sit back and think about your kids and it's unbelievable It's such a great message I want to sing along but they're late He claims that he never stops rustling He went into the studio and sat down and played that song and ad-libbed all the lyrics He ad-libbed the lyrics recorded it and that's exactly what's on the album Which would be crazy if you went and made that song ad-lib. That's that's nuts. That's off, man You don't know how it feels. I mean, this is the song I said and think about my kids
[1:06:00]Little ball blue and the man on the moon except it's the opposite I'm asking my kids like, hey, do you want to do stuff with them in there? Like I'll never do stuff with you Like they're doing the reverse cast of the great old to me Actually, we're like, hey, we're going off for sushi. Do you want to go there? Like no order a sushi for at home And I'm like damn you guys It's like begging you to come hang out with us. You don't know how it feels this was the lead single off the album It got to the top 13 even with all the various censored versions. Remember all the versions they have of this Couldn't say joint. Yeah, you couldn't say joint. They had one where they said joint backwards They had one where they said roll the joint And then write various permutations of that I I read that this was best male vocal performance in 1995. Aaron talk about tom petty as a singer What makes him a great singer? What makes him enticing as a singer? I I was kind of anticipating this question. I mean what makes him enticing as a singer is I don't think he's Got some Naturally, super impressive voice, but he
[1:07:00]Gives it everything and he goes to whichever Limits he can go to I can't raps pull up the weirdest shit on his computer and shots on your left Hudson Russell asked me a serious question. I need you to not get distracted by this Okay It's hot sauce on feet guys. It's hot sauce on feet. Not a video anymore I think that's a catalyst Why what about anything we've talked about makes you think if I go to youtube Aaron, here's the thing Okay This one may mtv's male Mtv video award for the best male video Okay, now do Swear to god. I had it on here somewhere. Do you want to guess what last year's Award was for best male video that are listening against Robin has to touch this up again on amazon Hot sauce on feet. Is it not there anymore? It's gone. What a youtube it's gone What? Okay, I'm going to bing when you got to go hardcore. I've got to go to big
[1:08:00]Hot sauce on feet Video hot sauce on eggs YouTube Probably got clipped for copyright and I'm gonna course copyright. There it is. Oh, where? He saw it like Safe search off. Okay. It's already set to off guys. So don't worry That single was released and tom petty wanted to put a song on the other side called girl on lsd And warner brother said you cannot because it's all about him dating a girl that's on different drugs. Listen to this song It's crazy. So good I was in love with a girl on lsd plays a concert She had seen things I never seen this is so fun She brought in her perspective Then I got more selected As in love with the girl You should listen to that song right now. It's such a fun song to listen to think about that
[1:09:00]And you don't know how it feels to come out on the scene turn out this podcast and listen to So so the you don't know how it feels was one of the last songs they wrote because they said we don't have a Radio hit on this album. It's kind of goes to russell's like you got to have a radio hit on the album Kind of a thing The front half of this album's got it. They so they said what is a radio hit and they said the joker by Steve Miller. Yeah, and then so then they kind of use that as like a As like a template and that's how they got to and then you look out the window and m&m's looking in Time to move on Well, his Wasn't the joker. I guess it was a Steve Miller song. It was never mind. Here we go. Time to speak at that bit time to move on This is the best song on the album This officially is the best song on the album. However His daughter did say that when she heard him saying this she knew that he was going to divorce her mom I was listening to this Just in case you're on this song ruin food
[1:10:00]Joking there. I was listening to this on my car ride into work today. This album is an amazing car album Yeah, put this on while you're driving down the road And every song at the beginning especially for me the first five I first I go Is this the best first two on an album? Then I was like, is this the best first three? Yes, then I got this the best first four and then the best first five and then at five That's where I kind of stopped. I was like, okay, I think I'm good You listen to this and you're listening to the lyrics you start thinking Like what do I need to do different in my life today? Like there is this connects with you in a whole different way that a lot of these albums have not, right? Yeah Okay, I'm going back to the cockade. You nailed it. Like the first five are awesome I think the question that you asked Rosie to like at the beginning of that documentary Like they asked him and he said like he considers himself a soul singer Which I think just hits on what erin says It's like he's so deep He's just so into it that whether he's got the greatest voice or he's like It's coming from the greatest spot ever
[1:11:00]Yes, and it's the whole I don't know That's why I love it so much when you listen to it because Yeah, he considers himself a soul singer because of that and I don't know what What genre you put him into but I think it's awesome to hear him talk about How he considers it and how he came to be What I love about these songs is that I think everyone sets a soundscape as soon as you hear that first note Like listen to wildflowers first note. You know exactly Where you are it sets a mood listen to I mean it's time to move on It sounds like the horizon like literally it sounds like You're expensive driving in Montana or something like you just get you get the image right away And then he wrote a song called you rock me and his guitarist was like That is a lame song every rock and roll guy has a song called you rock me and he recorded it as you rock me And he came back and said ah, you wreck me and the guy was like now you've got it Yes, you wrecked me is and this was a big song you used to play as on chorus
[1:12:00]I was more of a spice channel guy myself I I think actually heard the guy was really into potbelly. He liked the rec sandwich from potbelly Russell I've told you this before every week. I got to edit out your potbelly stuff, okay You're not doing spec sponsorships from them. They're not mentioning them. Just hoping that we get paid by potbelly Can we not go one week without talking about the potbelly salt and pepper vinegar chips I'm getting that contract the kanker store check russell. Give me one other sandwich from potbelly. What else we got? I'm a wreck. Yeah, that's all I get from the from potbelly. It's all I love it. Italian. I love it. I love it It's good to be king Hey So what the other ones that jumped out to me when I was thinking of greatest starts to an album I think there's the lead zeppelin where the first three of the first four There's a lead zeppelin four one of those there's a metallica one was metallica's awesome. There's some up there, but I
[1:13:00]The hell if anyone turns this album off before the first five And the rest of it's great too, but no one turns this off in the first five songs Yeah, I would argue the drop-off. I think for the rest of this album There's a drop-off, but it is because those first it's it might be the best Up there with the Beatles the best ending songs Wow Put that in your tickler file and throw away the key Adele Adele Adele put it put in your tickler file and give the key to your wife who's not going to lose it only a broken heart I was shocked by how few notes there was on genius for this album I couldn't find any There was not a lot of stuff on song facts either Rob That's one of my go-tos and song facts only had two songs as well. I was surprised. Yeah, it's kind of weird No research No, it sounds like it could have been on the white album
[1:14:00]True rosy, I agree. There's some Beatles notes here The doc the documentary The movie has stuff on all these songs It talks about when he's breaking up and his wife and his daughters watching him make this song like In retrospective and she can hear Like how this is where he's done with his family and it's the movie is fantastic I think the song I should get to keep some of your panties when I move out. I think that was Give away B was one of the 13 that got cut, huh? So so let me get this straight. She gets the basketball if you get To me I got to say I used to have the cd in my car This was the number one skipper on the cd for me. I was always For the next one. So what you I don't mind listening to it now, but I can hear what you're saying The one thing they said about on the album they got 25 songs Eventually that came out of the whole session is that and one of them was with I think one of the guys from
[1:15:00]Second album we ever listened to Beach boys one of the beach boys guys and then ring go It was a very soft song It was a great song We're very soft and so what they basically are cut from the album because they have too many soft songs Out of that session and so that's why I think you hear some songs like honeyby There's four or five on the on everything else that could absolutely take over for honeyby, right? But he was a big pacing guy. He was big Slotting the songs and I think that he kind of explained it well There is that he just he needed a few more pick-me-up songs and honeyby probably got in there because of that You got to admit like if somebody came to you and said listen, I got an investment If you want to be in it It's rick rubin and tom petty working together. Wouldn't you just be like yep all my money? Here's my kids college investment. I'll give you everything. This is going to be of slam dunk it Don't fade on me And then I would say and also did you know that rick rubin what he kind of looks like?
[1:16:00]What does tom petty look like then He does tom petty does kind of look like an old man's penis Speaking of people that look like tom petty for the college football fans out there I know we've got at least one on this podcast I was googling back in tom petty. It turns out the georgia quarterback Carson beck looks exactly like tom petty. There are reddit There are reddit things all about how karson beck is tom petty google karson beck tom petty rob Okay, now is this it because if this was in the loctober subreddit, I probably would have seen it Here's the reddit tom petty and karson beck are the same person. They look the same. Oh, wow Joe when it comes to looking like tom petty what college football player did it better obviously beck did it better? He looks like a guy where you're like, oh, I've always wanted to try meth. Who could I talk to in my school? That was so crazy because Like petty's music everything's so good that you look at him and he just makes that look so cool
[1:17:00]Like when you watch him he makes like he looks cool with that look. Yeah, it's crazy But if he was like at the grocery store, you would stand between him and your kids Yeah what I mean? Like you would put up a barrier If he worked at potbelly, you would not order the sandwich You'd be like, I'll just take your bag stuff. I'm good Here's the other thing guys. He's from Florida. So it makes a lot more sense when you realize that he's from Florida And then moved out to california Cabin down below Who knows what he's talking about here Oh, they said in the documentary I'm gonna say I re-listened to that episode the other day on the roulette and it was a good one Who would have guessed we could make that chuckberry work You had the video camera the bullets asked
[1:18:00]Well, we don't want to I heard john you and erin were mentioned in the Beatles a little bit on who influenced tom petty I think Elvis there's a bunch of people that influenced tom petty But I thought we could also celebrate some of the bands that tom petty influenced. I thought we could do a list You guys up for a list. Wow I love it. Yeah, I love brussel's list brussel just so you know if you try to do hot sauce on feed on your list It's not I can't find it anyone And part of this on the list joe and john, I'm glad you guys are on this you're tom petty fans I didn't know you were this big of fans, but I'm glad you're here But I know matt is the one who's been bringing up tom petty for many weeks now, right? So a lot of the people on this list I'm I'm I'm dedicating to matt as some of his favorite artists as well And we're going to start with matt's favorite artists ever We're starting with pearl jam. They covered wildflowers. Check this one out. Oh, wow It's just it's just eddy
[1:19:00]This makes you want to move up to Alaska You saw this man, huh? So the pearl jam toured with tom petty they opened for him a concert tour 2006 Wow But they did and actually when tom petty died they do the in memoriam segment for the oscars or whatever And they covered a tom petty song and it was eddy vetter that covered it and played that song during the in memoriam So I thought that was a pretty touching tribute to tom petty from matt's favorite artists ever Hey real quick matt were you at that 2006 concert? I was not at that one. So the funny thing was is that it was a pearl jam and petty Old tour and Tom petty Was the bigger band, right? Obviously and eddy got on stage and he said hey
[1:20:00]If If tom was my dad I'd be Eddy petty It was amazing. It was so fun. That's so good That's so good The only thing better than that is if you're out sleeping around and you accidentally knock up someone You know what and you're cheating on your wife. So we're gonna honor the next artist Is the Foo Fighters in Dave Grohl the song is wheels He would appreciate the privacy as all the parties figure out what's happening Doesn't this sound just like tom petty though this song here. Yeah, it's a Foo Fighters song I thought you're getting back into one of those dates used to have Russ Joe Joe So Russ before I saw you I was just on a date with Dave Grohl I know I can't drink right now Dave Grohl a huge fan of Tom petty and he actually played with Tom petty and the heartbreakers on saturday night live in 1994
[1:21:00]They needed a drummer. Oh, Dave Grohl played with them They offered him a spot in the band and he turned it down to form the Foo Fighters But he always talked about how he was one of his biggest inspirations And he said even when I was a stubborn punk rock asshole I still love Tom petty because I felt like he was a stubborn cynical punk runk asshole. So Dave Grohl also loved Tom petty and I think you hear that music. Don't you guys? Yeah, I'm sure Yeah, that was great. You're the guy in the heartbreakers and he's like, hey, Dave You want to be in our band as our drummer? You'd be like, wait a minute This guy You might be trying to get rid of me. I better be careful the beginning of the end for that guy It just took 20 years before they actually got rid of him Next band up on the list is in honor of one of my feet one of my best friends on the show tonight It's the strokes the song is last night Wow Well, this absolutely sounds a little American girl intro it sounds exactly the same right? Yeah, this one was like
[1:22:00]They ripped it off. Yeah, Eric They did rip it off Tom petty got asked about it and he said what like there's you know Music comes from everywhere and I think he compared a lot of things like all rock sounds like chuck berry If you really want to go back to it But he said at some point is a julian casablanca. Is he one of the main guys for this ropes? Yeah, one point just said, yeah, we ripped it off It is what it is where have you been and I think Tom petty just appreciated They just admitted that we took it, right? Right He's fine. He doesn't need to curl with it. Led Zeppelin's like shit. We should have just done Tom petty songs This guy doesn't give a shit Next song on the list. This is for matt. I think this is one of your matt's favorite bands I'm not sure about the song man if we've talked about this one before but the band is one vampire weekend The song is oxford comma. Oh, yeah, so good Matt you still rocking vampire weekend a lot Oh, yeah, I gotta it's about one every 10 albums now because I gotta start working
[1:23:00]That song only god was above us still yeah, it's such a bank The main guy is an esra conic mad in this band Sounds right canik. I think yeah, Esra. Esra canik But if you listen to that it sounds exactly like don't do me like that if you can hear that Heavily influenced by Tom petty and he said Tom petty he was it he departed from his 70s stuff And kind of started doing the drum machines in the sense like you would see in the 80s So he was a 70s rocker that stayed open minded like the changes of rock in like the 80s and 90s And he always said he really appreciated him about that. I thought that was pretty cool Yeah, they said in the documentary they used to just lay down tracks, right? It basically wasn't it wasn't a drum They had the human element by it by using like a Rolled-up newspaper or something like that they would record and then just use that as essentially as their drum machine God, they this guy fucking hated his drummer Addie
[1:24:00]Next up on the list probably the biggest pop star in the world right now heavily influenced by Tom petty It's taylor swift You hear the vocal inflection Taylor Swift article in Rolling Stone Rob's favorite website She said he motivated thousands of guitars because they wanted to be able to play Free falling count me as one of them. So Taylor Swift Becomes a guitar player and helps your crew take off because of Tom petty So good wow All right one more on the list. This is one of our favorite artists. This is what everyone comes here One of our favorite artists that was influenced by and influenced with Tom petty is back Check out this song here. Let's rub. Let's let's play the here we go. Yeah. Oh man Now I want to be very clear. None of us were beck fans before we did this podcast Russell randomly picked back as somebody who could make songs better than the Beatles
[1:25:00]And now this is our life So Tom petty actually really liked beck and he covered the song asshole by beck And this was in the phase where johnny cash covered rowboat by beck It was kind of in the late 90s with american record stuff erin And this is when the exact time When he did this was about the time he was doing wildflowers And he actually said like beck is going to be one of those artists that is always around So like tom petty really appreciated beck And beck was actually at tom petty's last ever concert at the hollywood bowl So he saw tom petty erin you talked about when you didn't get to see prince at one of the last concerts He was there and he talked about like how important tom petty was to him. He said You know tom petty is like the la band just as much as the beach boys Their music was an idealization of the parts of la the sort of beautiful summer down in the valley that kind of feeling So like beck is a california artist. He's taking a lot of stuff from tom petty So i gotta say when it comes to being inspired by tom petty who did it better?
[1:26:00]John Yes, so yes, no good And there's one more thing I wanted to end. I want to start with eddie vader I want to end on eddie vader for one quick thing. I thought matt would absolutely adore this This is after tom petty had passed away eddie vader was doing one of the concerts at wrigley mad It could have even been one. I think you were at a wrigley concert if I remember right 16 and 18 so this would have been I don't know. I think petty died in 20 17 so this could have been after but check this out There's a short clip where tom petty is on stage at wrigley field and he's telling a story About this conversation or this phone call or conversation he had with tom petty and it's going to take a minute or so But you guys have to listen to this. It's so cool It's so cool about what he says and then he goes into a song. Just let it roll for a minute On the other side says He
[1:27:00]Guess we're on that And it was tom petty And he said Yes, I want you to know it. They said I wish you all these years later It's me wishing he was here thinking about this earlier Would you help me create a moment and if there's such a thing as the heavens? Maybe we could light it up with our phones down here. Maybe you could see us that we see this one together and Bring him back Thinking about this and I'm you know what I've got to say is like
[1:28:00]You're always wishing people were here joe and john I couldn't be happier than her that you guys are here doing this with us tonight It's such a cool thing to have you guys here for it. So matt I wanted to start and end with your favorite artists any better This is easily the top Top one You great. Thank you. I heard who's in that. I heard who's in the crowd there and I didn't like it. That was not That's not good Was another excuse me is this concert over so I can get out of this cock cage? I've got a key way to get home If it's the end of moktober or whatever it locked over the middle of mid night on october 31st I've got to go. He'd be like I was on the phone. I'd be like play jeremy Shut up Play jeremy
[1:29:00]Play bugs Aaron brings it. I love this song to find a friend I don't know. How do you get friends now as an older guy? She was meddlesy to me. We obviously make a podcast. This is the one that was the this is another one about his marriage breaking Oh, oh, man. That's barely my favorite songs are about marriages breaking up Not worried about that does not I'm not worried about it. Hey russell It's fine. Okay. I'm not gonna be thinking about this Okay, I'm not gonna be thinking about who's listening to this and who might tell people that are I think that rob brings this up is like he's got these recordings of it This is kind of like in the documentary when his daughter is watching and she goes this is the song I can tell my parents. We're getting divorced Like if rob imagine you've got all these episodes for your kids to go back and be like, yeah, there's probably the cock cage You had all the clues
[1:30:00]A higher place Yeah Hey judge in the settlement. Can I actually get like one of the keys? I need it really bad Oh My urethra has never been this dilated Higher place I don't know enough about his career when I think like when I've been listening to this album and to Think chronologically like who influenced who like that sounds like Elvis Costello to me But maybe Elvis Costello had heard Tom Petty in the 70s or like there's other stuff where it sounds like Fleetwood Mac to me and like I don't I don't know the chronology enough to know who was Taking from maybe it's just that's the time to the time. I know there were a lot of artists inspired by Tom Petty I can think of a couple pearl jam Taylor Swift Vampire weekend You're pretty good Aaron you think about who the traveling wheelbarrows were right? Yeah, you've got The jeff linds and you've got the Harrison's and you got the Bob Dylan's and you've got I mean he was
[1:31:00]Learning from those guys as much as everybody's learning from him And you know late 70s early 80s eight late 80s all that stuff So I don't it feels like it's just such a mishmash of Of crossover that he's probably stealing a little from them. They're stealing from him Like you would have feelings if you found out your mom was a groupie, right? Like you'd be like, well you could do what you want mom Like you had a life and everything But if you found out your mom was a groupie for the traveling wheelbarrows, wouldn't you just be like Oh What is going on all of a picture? Oh, yeah, I was in this we were just in this fuckfest It was me Roy orberson tom petty jeff linds. What? Now I know who all those stone west jeans belong to in that closet Well, can you imagine just how much hair is everywhere like rick rubin is there too? You're like there's hair everywhere This is the number one harrier storage. You have ever been to Crawling back to you Oh How do you matt joe you guys
[1:32:00]How do you rank so I grew up with the tom petty greatest hit cd. It was like that might have been double But that's the one I had growing up How do you guys compare this to full moon fever because rob when he ripped off some of those songs on that one That one sounds pretty damn good Did like were you guys a fan of one of the album over this one or where do you rank that one? Yeah, I like yeah you This album is so I mean it's just so different right? I mean that's like kind of more like an 80s rock It's not really 80s rock. It's not hair melanin. I've got it. Just it sounds like the You know kind of the transition from yacht rock to just straight up like ks 95 rock in russia If you know for this the bus lives in the cities But this one is just so far ahead of all of that because it's much more To joe's with joe's saying more soul, but I think it's just more Kind of independent and it just it feels like it's not it feels like it's more
[1:33:00]Grown out of not a rock album anymore. It's just a guy who wants to put out his best user That's where I am and a lot of times that happens matt and it is like Oh, that's like not my taste like I liked him for what he was like I thought he was really good in those early albums But seeing this that just comes out of him To me it was Just something so different and people still yes soulful like not soul, but soulful. I love it Yeah, people still have like pearl jam. They still want to do verses and ten and you know things like that That's pearl jam. I can't you know the new stuff. I'm not gonna listen to you. I love the new stuff I mean I like it all but I love the new stuff more than that. So I think it's just a it's a You know, it's kind of like metallica. Some people Can't stand What the black album and everything after that because it's such a Change from what they were doing on the first three four album probably you missed your chance to bring up st. Anger You'll never guess what I was about to say
[1:34:00]Because I know my favorite album st. Anger Okay, matt joel there. I don't know you guys may be on Russell here's what I think right this album came out when we were 14 Like that is such a huge Formative year. I think of music too of like it's a snapshot you listen to it when you're 15 Talked about 94 like it. Well, and I wasn't gonna bring up 94 again But this came out in 1994 If you look at all the albums and one day we'll just do a 1994 podcast about it Unboly it's the greatest year of music ever and I know we were 14 then 13 then things like that. But if you really look it is the greatest There's something about that first year you're jerking it where those memories just are locked in there You know what I mean that's when life has started everything up to there You know what when I was a child I read Richard scary books When I was 14 I was watching the grind on MTV It was a whole different life Wake up time Listeners of this podcast are like this guy really has something with the grind. He's not kidding about that
[1:35:00]I wish we could just let this whole thing but this is if you know, when we get to the end This is the greatest ending song of an album. So this is your number one closer so far Number one closer. Yeah, and there's a lot of good closers I love it man. You know what world fame is closer. That's what I would say 100% was big a big fan of the first half of 2001 with LaTroy Hawkins The winds and he melted down The whole season to the now guardians Oh, I see you guys keep talking all of a sudden the big band comes in So we should I wish we could let this whole thing play. We'll let how long is it Rob? Let me get close to the screen to look at the number Like three and a half minutes maybe Matt we can listen I I got some to mention you guys are a fan of this song and this album There are two people that disagree with you and that would be Andre Darlington and tonight Darlington the authors of booze and vinyl because that book
[1:36:00]Included full moon fever as the album in that book What I had a cocktail tonight and it might be the best cocktail I've ever had out of this book So I want to share with wow You know what Russell We ran out of time. We got to go. Sorry Russell would you say this is a world famous cocktail It's a world famous It doesn't make as much sense. I get it back to the better world famous cock back to the better most famous. All right. Here we go The drink is called a zombie zoo. Have you ever had a zombie zoo before that? That sounds like something my father in law legitimately would have ordered when we went out to dinner somewhere He would have ordered a zombie zoo I told you that for a while he was I tell you what drink is way into for a while It was buttery nipple slippery nipple We would go to a restaurant and my father in law would order a slippery nipple And we would all look in horror and the at the waitress who's also in horror. Everyone's in horror We're like 22 and he's like I want a slippery nipple. We're like
[1:37:00]It is 3 30 p.m. On a Thursday. You cannot order a slippery nipple right now happy hour Again happy hour special Was he just I wanted that I don't know maybe he does have a bit of the clown blood So I wasn't sure if he was just trolling us or what but Russell what is it in there? What's that first one again? We got one ounce of light rum Wow two ounces of dark rum two ounces An ounce of poncho. Wow No way is an ounce of pineapple juice. No 100 chance. No way an ounce of fresh lime juice Half an ounce of grenadine A pinch of brown cinnamon No a dash of absinth And pineapple wedge for garnish that is a zombie Does that remind you of like the days back at Garfield Avenue in Ritzfield at A drink ticer's house with fire starting on the
[1:38:00]Countertops and doors being taken off their Did she get for living on the stairs guys If my kid came home and told me one story Of an exact time that like I was drinking with the guys when I was like 23 I'd be like You're never leaving the house again You guys did what you took a block of ice out of Lake Superior Carved a path in it and by the way carving a path on a block of ice takes hours And then you dumped alcohol down the ice luge with your mom at the end Drinking it and oh everybody would do fun shots like blue shots and rip your schnapps And then when Rob got on there the guy with the wild turkey stepped in and poured half a bottle down it And I couldn't stop because there's a luge I had to have my mouth on it. It was a traumatic experience. Yeah, and also don't forget I'd eaten a case of Girl Scout cookies at this point And smoked out of a can Cocktails just get a little cold at that point too. Oh, yeah Nemo best finishing song ever got any better ones This is the best one ever
[1:39:00]It's good Matt, hold on. Just let this play right here. Hold on. Listen. Turn up loud. Oh I think I stopped it early on the edit Yeah, and what leads into that is crawling back to you. So like 14 is awesome too like 14 and 15 on the album are unbelievable So I'll just say this for that song Eddie in the documentary said his favorite line. He said this is at the time Right here we go Such a great he said it's his favorite line that he ever wrote up until that point was it's going to be all right It's just going to take some time You know, he said that he always thinks about that. That's his favorite and that's from that song It's his favorite line that he ever wrote in a song up to that point. So If tom petty said it, yeah, tom petty said that's this thing I'm gonna go along and say that's one of his favorite songs and love it. What am I so good Was there anything in the documentary about why the fuck he did a allison wonderland video? Like was there any
[1:40:00]It's like, hey, I wonder if this guy has a drug problem comes out with an allison wonderland video. You're like, I'm still not sure I don't know But maybe rob if he dances with that dead woman for a little bit We'll forget about that other one. Yeah for real and then you're like, which one's the dead woman? [100:21] That joke has not hit yet, but it's going to soon Yeah, I don't want to tell it on this episode though. I'm actually going to edit it out there Listen, we don't care about the album. Okay. Hooray. We all like the album. Who cares? [100:33] Okay, we're going to listen to lots of great albums. This is the top out 500 albums They've all got to be wonderful to listen to Okay, it's got to be a good time. Is this album perfect? [100:43] at 120 And if you think I'm talking slow because I'm pulling up something you're wrong 200 and 14 14 120 Good lord. Okay, this is 214
[1:41:00]so far off Suddenly feeling so old Samsonite so old Like literally my kid's gonna go to college and I'll be like album 318. Like that's a fact Oh my kid decided her major and this is album 460 Oh 318 the velvet rope by Janet Jackson That's got any time on this amazon sell pills looking that up right now That would be a rolling well toned. It's perfect at 214 and we love doing this or would this be a rolling bone It should have been higher up on the list and of course by higher up now. You might think higher up Well, that must be a higher number Okay, but here in this case higher up on the list is a lower number and of course something we looked at earlier So whether you're going by the Roman Gregorian calendar or the number of this list. It's a lower number Okay, unless you go too far back in the calendar and then it gets higher again
[1:42:00]I'm the guy by the way who decided bc is now bce. Oh, thanks a lot, buddy that really helped Oh ade oh, I was confused Everybody knew so bc and then the bce everybody's like well, I guess those are just the rules now I mean nobody came to your house and said you just got to say bce. No, but now you do Or is this a role That bit is closely related to my dewey decimal bit, okay Rolling groan Okay, if you hated this album, it should be higher on the list now You might think to yourself. I'm going back in time. That's a higher number bce Just like if it's a rolling groan. It should have been higher on the list back in time all right We'll tell a story about your roommate who used to play back in time all the time. Okay, Joe
[1:43:00]You have a dewey decimal bit. I can't wait to hear it. Oh my god. Not to be confused with the 900 or the references St. Olaf dewey bit right dewey. He had no trust me. He made me look like a decimal He was a whole number and that whole number was like 10 or 12 honestly I mean I would think about him There's no other reason I would think about him fucking somebody but I did I know I did If the hey if the chicago guy doesn't laugh at that joke listen nobody's gonna laugh at he's rolling He's got some fancy job. He's rolling in his I found out who my wife dated before me in college And I went out and looked to see who these guys were because I had to see what I was swinging against here And I went and saw my wife's ex-boyfriends. Now, of course, I started dating my wife I had a girlfriend of four years Met my wife don't my girlfriend four years immediately. So I am kind of a nice guy, but I
[1:44:00]Hold on. Hold on. I don't know. Wait, wait Immediately or was there like a two-week Change there was a bit You know, like when you change sides on a football field and like the players kind of maybe There's maybe three players talking at the same time Maybe one player is talking to one player then also talking to the other player They go back and talk to that first player again That was pretty sweet. That might be the highlight of my life actually that like two weeks Where I was so stressed out But I saw two different kinds of underwear in a week Like when you see multiple sizes of underwear in a week, you're like, oh, no Robert Lacey wasn't good for his healthy two chipotle burritos for lunch every week, right? [104:44] You're like, I can't do it. I realized now I have told this story, but my wife My wife dated just fat guys just big fatties and I never I was like, well, this is great. She's got a type. She's found the king of them in me. Let's go
[1:45:00]If she would have dated Dewey with this huge fat cock, I could have not gotten over that Because I would have been like, this is bad. This is a bad She's not going to I forget where we were so let's talk about the rating system Well, it's rolling well to unrolling bro and rolling growing now. Joe, you are new Do you understand what rolling because sometimes the lower higher stuff gets people but We're talking Tom Patty. We're talking wildflowers Let's start with actually with Russ. Russ, what do you think rolling well to unrolling bone or rolling grown The song this album was so fun. As I said earlier when I was listening in the car It was the perfect car album and it really made me think like it's time to move on You think about the stuff you're getting caught up in life. You got to let it go This was so good. It just it makes you think about stuff that the songs were beautiful The wildflowers is one of those songs it almost [105:52] It almost makes you cry. It's like such a beautiful song It reminds me of like Blackbird with the Beatles or something like that like it's just so good I'm going to say this is rolling bone and to me. It's wildly rolling bone
[1:46:00]That this is going to be way higher on the list I don't know that it belongs in like the top 10 top 25 top 30 But I think it's in my top 10 favorites that we've listened to I'm going to put it up there with in no particular order Kanye West beautiful dark twists of fantasy the Beatles white album Amy Winehouse back to black Alanis Harvest by Neil Young led Zeppelin for purple rain and the rise and fall of ziggie star dust and I'm putting this right up in there with that I love this album And I don't know if this is college vibe. I don't know what this is it this what you categorize this is But there's no way anyone turns this shit off So I'm going to say this is rolling bone way higher on the list for me Why am they rolling? John just got called away from my spouse. I can only imagine what he's saying. He's like, sweetie I just got to get my rolling. I just they're asking me about the album. Is it rolling well told? [106:52] In the morning Do not take me away right now I have to answer this now. You might think really well bowed. Well, the number is higher But there's a calendar thing now. Did you know it's busy? [107:02] what do you think Matt rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling groan that jokes gonna hit
[1:47:00]I think this is rolling bone and I think this is the top five album of all time. [107:15] I you know for me, it's a top five. I but I honestly, I think it's a top 10 at some point kind of a thing, but it's top five for me for sure. So absolutely rolling bone I've only been talking about it for seven. Yeah, man. I don't know. You know what this is kind of like, Matt Your loctober is over Today, we're taking off the cock cage that is wildflower by tom petty. You know what? [107:37] You know what honestly Now we rest This has been matt's loctober Where there are six people saluting for the list some people wear physical cock cages some of us wear metaphorical cock cages where we've talked about an album for the last Five or six weeks and now we've listened to that album
[1:48:00]And as we looked down the list at the next 386 albums that we need to cover You wonder will there be another wildflowers? [108:10] Or is it all downhill from there? [108:13] Did you just switch your hands? [108:15] And it turned down the volume because I couldn't I couldn't tell if you guys were laughing at my jokes So I had to turn down the tap. Hey taps. Nice. I can't even hear if they're laughing at the jokes Or down the trumpets Don't even think about the 21 guns going off So do you matt's loctober of tom petty's wildflower? [108:33] We salute you not quite over All right, and then we will go with erin. What do you think rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling groan This is where I mean Listening to this with you guys is what makes the list worthwhile to me. Yeah, as you guys said I I don't even want to Say how I feel about the album because I mostly just like listening to you guys and your thoughts on it and love being here with
[1:49:00]Art that inspires you. I think the first four songs are incredible Maybe to five for me. I had a harder time with some of the later tracks So I've got to be honest with myself and it's I don't I wouldn't read it quite as high as you guys would so I'm going to give it a rolling well toned let's go, john rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling groan. There definitely wasn't somebody else to the room Saying why aren't you coming to bed yet? You're like, I got to do my bed There's a joke at the end. I really want to hear it It's the ranking. I am not baby singing your damn kids again. If you don't let me do the ranking Rob said he's doing another karaoke song at the end. He didn't actually get any compliments for that Nobody said anything about it. But if he still thinks it went, okay But nobody actually said anything or emailed or voicemailed in and said, oh, good job, Rob What did he say, john? What did he say? [109:52] Your daughters are swimming for a state championship tomorrow. Can you shut the fuck up lady? [109:57] Jenny came out and said it's two o'clock in the morning. Oh tell her I wish on these ghosts
[1:50:00]Look at him peek around. This is what Rob does Hey use your head. Rob's on these posts. He's an hour later Hello Yes, yes this this album was rolling. He's falling quiet john. I like quiet john. This is my favorite Okay, is he is very Rob like now he's standing and you know what the thing is too I did that whole admin Fitzgerald karaoke bit My family was in the other room listening to me do it. Did not ask a word when I came out Why did you just sing that whole 10 minute song? What's going on? [110:37] You didn't seem to do any retakes even though some of the verses started fast from your thought Rob, did you do that to be listened to it when we recorded it or you just add that on I added it on I the upstairs roommate made a comment about the admin Fitzgerald story. I was like, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about What episode is that I really thought it was like a magnet opus because everybody We've had so many different variations of the bit and you were like we should play at record the admin Fitzgerald and I was like
[1:51:00]I got an idea rust wink and I was like in my head I was like Russell is so interested with what's going to happen with this admin Fitzgerald What episode is this on? [111:12] It was two weeks ago. I couldn't even tell you. I think it was it Jody Jody Mitchell was that two weeks ago? It feels like it was Fuck me Okay, Joe rolling well toned rolling boned or rolling Yeah, obviously wait a minute. I'm biased rolling groan I got you. Yep. Tom Petty's 1994 hit wild flowers Got it is that's the one we've been talking about. Okay, obviously I'm biased. I said at the beginning It's my favorite album ever. So for me definitely rolling boned. I can appreciate Aaron's take on the album. I love every single song from top to bottom of this album could listen to it all I think as you watch the documentary. I believe it was his daughter She gave a quote. She just said about Tom. He's a unicorn
[1:52:00]He's a one-of-a-kind human being on this planet that came here to bring joy And to me that this album Does it for me it might be because I I listened to it first when I was 14 or 15 or whatever it was That it just hit me in some way and I've been able to appreciate it all the way until Today when I listen to it again And then to be able to talk about it with you guys I appreciate the opportunity to come on here and do that because I love it Rolling bone to me it is like it is with Matt a top Five album probably the top one for me. So Wow, Rob, would you say this hits you differently than the salt and pepper push it video when you were 14 Is the tlc creep video and you know that where there are those pajamas I was like if I can time it just right spinderella will be oh no, it's the trumpet player Listen, unfortunately, you guys are incorrect amazing joke Shit When I listened to my dad's podcast episodes, that's what I knew he jerked off a lot when he was younger
[1:53:00]Yeah, jokes on them. I've never stopped I'll never stop John's wife say, what are you doing? What are you laughing at? [113:18] Rob talking about what's the oldest age you get caught jerking off where it's not like, whatever he's doing what he wants You know what I mean? Like I think like when I'm 62 and I'm just jerking at everybody's gonna be like, well 62 One of my buddies you guys will appreciate this, he sent a picture of an older gentleman at a full cart Rob bleep that out and not getting paid for this but [113:42] And he sent a picture and it was not of them standing taking a selfie of the Members that monitor do you like that? We like to send to our friend from joe from woodbury But it was a gentleman pushing a cart that just had like four cases of ky jelly in it Nice And they said this and they were like good for him that he's he needs this or whatever
[1:54:00]And you know what? I really appreciate it was the old guy where it's like He's not even putting anything else in the cart Like he's not he's not trying to cover it up by putting like some food or like some You know kitchen cleaner or it's all it was a cart full of ky jelly for like a 65 year old dude So much shit is going on in my ass and I don't care who knows it You know what I mean So Rob or joe from woodbury if you're out champ bottles in his house or like Let's see if they need to refill an aisle too The christmas ornaments in his house are like oh my god. Do you see how much ky he just brought in? [114:36] look out Unfortunately, you guys are incorrect. Okay, and if you guys are pleased we gotta move along This album gets a real rolling vh won't john's gotta go to bed. No, I have to start Excuse me Don't like to be interrupted. I think it's actually quite rude This album gets a rolling vh. He's gotta he's gotta go to a swimming meet tomorrow. No, I don't My kids aren't quite good enough to make it to state
[1:55:00]Dad, why does this metal from the that we got the mail look like you just made it What Sped and spelled m e t a l Oh Not even close I mean it is gold metal if you think about it. So really it's kind of a double it's under this album gets a rolling vh won't Double when I get up on you then I get up on you. No, not the lyrics I used to watch tom petty all the time on vh one like literally the skateboarding video for a free fallen Like the dancing with the lady video. We laugh about it But and then the alice. I mean guys I've talked a lot about tom petty videos even just today Okay, and for him to come out with a legit album when I was 14 It was just perfect because it really showed like here's a guy who everybody said it was a rock star And now like you said he's changing with the times and this feels like music that's applicable to me and who I am I I listened to the first half and it was an all-timer now. I thought I had
[1:56:00]A joke on there, but I don't so sorry if you thought there's going to be a joke in there. There was not I think Yeah, I think I was going to make a jack-off joke about mtv instead and it's just I've been doing that the whole episode. So next week Okay, so this joke I'm just going to tell you right now. This joke is tough And the part of the reason it's tough is it's a double decker Okay, I'm going to tell half the joke that I'm going to go back to the beginning that I'm going to tell a second Half to the joke and then at the end it's going to have the same punch line. So are you ready for this? [116:32] This is a two for one two jokes one punch line. Okay That reminds me of a website that we should look at if we're done with this next week Your jokes won't punch line To next week We finally cover one of erin's favorite movies where kevin spacey is attracted to a high school age girl Oh wait, this is a music podcast We have an album by a band that made a song about russell's hair and ben rothasverger's penis A touch of gray It's a grateful dead with american beauty
[1:57:00]And then you go back to the old joke So good I was like the guy who invented the mic plane. He's like fucking put another wing on there Sounds good the guy who makes razors is like wait a minute. It's a great idea Fuck it. We're putting another one on Back did it better Robbie you actually you mentioned my hair and I thought it was pretty interesting timing because i'm not bragging But I do have to go get a haircut tomorrow and when I do go in I'm going to ask for a high-class trim And then I'm going to say I'm going to give him permission to buzz the tower And then I'm going to tell him look loctober ended two weeks ago giving my cock cage key back or lose me forever Dude's taken Damn thing Unfortunately, I didn't hear what he said because I was thinking about how women's razors are the only razors who did not Keep up with the multiple razor trend. They're stuck on two, but it's actually probably good
[1:58:00]Because if you went into your girl's shower and she had like a six-blade razor you'd be like damn Six blades That's a lot of blades
