[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by

[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted a text chain that celebrated the music x scoria the order and

[00:08]led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research

[00:13]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it better

[00:19]uh we are up to album 216 and from 1997 it's elliot smith with either or now aaron i'm sure

[00:26]you know but this album okay the name the dare the name derives from the soren kirkegaard book

[00:32]of the same name oh i did not know that okay now i don't need to say this to you okay i think we're

[00:36]not dumb fucks we know this but in in this book either or refers to the contrast between the

[00:41]aesthetic and subjective experience and ethical objective being which is to why you know and you

[00:46]know what i have to say to that shut the fuck up who cares what are you even talking about i'll be

[00:50]honest i have one kirkegaard book it's fear and trembling and there's some stuff about abraham

[00:55]in there and i i don't

[00:56]totally get it it's hard it's hard it's it's deep stuff man uh let's get right into it there is no

[01:03]uh a parody song this week there's not gonna be parody songs for the next couple episodes yes man

[01:06]i just i i read that uh saint olaf as some people call it is the kirkegaard center isn't there like

[01:13]a library right their whole library there at saint olaf really yes i never went in there but yeah

[01:20]it's like its own special like it's the spot it's the kirkegaard collection aaron was like i'm at

[01:26]a music library i know i totally right saint olaf did have a music library if people thought i'm

[01:31]making a joke about that they did have a music library i think i had to go in there once for an

[01:35]assignment and it was like everybody knew that i didn't belong in there you know what i mean like

[01:39]it was like i felt like the movie white chicks okay except i instead of me dressed up as a white

[01:45]chick i was not a music major walking around the uh it definitely was like a small town dive bar

[01:50]where if you walked in people knew you weren't from there you know do like wait a minute it was

[01:54]like because it was the one place where we could look at like the music library and i was like

[01:56]like football players and be like this isn't your place man get out of here you know it's like

[02:00]if we went anywhere else on campus we were the dorks i've never smelled this bass clef before

[02:05]rob guy you must have a club foot or something he's totally walking off off beat he's just

[02:14]completely off being on his walking hey i'm here to see some g-strings that's what i would

[02:19]say if i went to the music library uh that's a good joke now listen okay i realized without a

[02:26]parody song these two jokes are going to come parasitically close to each other so nothing

[02:29]we just said could be edited out i've got three guys here who think kierkegaard's either or are

[02:33]often centered around only perceived overly simplistic presentation of life's choices

[02:37]it's potential for promoting moral relativism as i said by emphasizing the either or dichotomy

[02:42]it's lack of clear ethical grounding it's potential damaging impacted individuals

[02:46]who might feel pressured to choose between drastically different life paths

[02:49]without considering nuanced options in between i mean i've got three jean-paul chartres here

[02:56]this is then we're going to lose half our audience we cannot do whatever you're doing

[03:01]now we cannot keep i think you lost half of the half of the panel here the half that's not going

[03:06]to laugh at a jean-paul sartre joke goodbye don't need you okay either or there's the door

[03:11]either stay and listen or you can get the out there are less than three people

[03:16]listening to this that have any even close to having a clue what you're talking about

[03:21]now do you think if you think that sounded weird because i was reading the words off the page not

[03:25]understanding what i was saying i to that i say what uh listen okay i've got matt minneapolis we're

[03:32]talking about oh i should say we're talking about elliot smith either or man i got matt

[03:35]minneapolis matt how are you doing today uh good rob drink up baby stay up all night why not we

[03:41]need sleep oh my god i got a russell in minneapolis with no sun streaming in the basement today

[03:46]russell how are you doing today i'm doing good guys last time when we were in vegas and i was

[03:50]late you thought i was hung over it turns out i i'm going to admit i actually tripped over a dog

[03:55]in a choke chain collar oh wow oh no how did my choke change collar get out of my hotel stay in

[04:05]the box yeah um and i've got oh nevermind it was good tell a story but i'm not going to uh and i've

[04:12]got aaron out in california now aaron told me he he said he had a bet with his wife he said i'm going

[04:18]to make a car out of spaghetti and guys you should have seen her face when he drove pasta could you

[04:25]do that with an italian accent redo it sure i told my wife i'm going to make a car out of spaghetti

[04:32]you should have seen her face when i drove a pasta

[04:35]i don't have a lot to quote on this album but i did go to target and michael's in alameda

[04:43]california yesterday so i feel close to it let's uh let's talk about elliot smith

[04:47]all right let's get right to the voicemail which i just remembered i did not you guys realize when

[04:55]when we don't do the uh the parody song it means rob also doesn't do the beck did a better song

[05:00]oh oh geez yeah what the hell podcast is what's up that's a problem well how do we do this i don't

[05:05]even want to listen and i would say like welcome to beck what would i say i would say today we're

[05:11]doing elliot smith how about this elliot smith this is elliot smith either or blah blah blah i

[05:17]mean what are we this is elliot john paul sartre when you want to hear about it does go better

[05:25]quality of this song is so poorly recorded every time i hear it on the podcast i should re-record it

[05:30]no no i don't know how i don't know how i did it it's not the time you got to just roll with it

[05:35]i know but it's so lo-fi for this album although actually i don't know i did it better

[05:42]i don't know uh listen okay let's get right into the voicemail next time russell next episode

[05:50]i machine i just got back from the future rivets smoke i nailed it

[05:55]i nailed when to play the theme song next episode so joe there's gonna be a little

[05:59]weak delay i know you hate that but get ready okay you're gonna hear me nail it

[06:02]same as the old tickler file

[06:07]beat the new tickler same as the old tickler don't get fooled again f mary kill

[06:15]dave matthews band matchbox 20. goo goo dolls

[06:24]dave matthews band matchbox 20. goo goo dolls now i have to mean by f what is what does that mean

[06:31]it was the f stand for huh a finger oh no no no no no no no no no no no uh-oh russell's brussels

[06:40]russell has a list of words that somebody whose life has written for somebody who's written down

[06:44]a couple of words for russell where he's now his response to those words but guys of course we're

[06:48]talking about which band would you like to which band would you like to marry and which band would

[06:52]you like to kill all right i don't know which band would you like to marry and which band would you

[06:52]like to kill all right which band would you like to marry and which band would you like to kill all right

[06:54]uh what do we think do you do dolls do now google dolls i am not as familiar i have to say with the

[07:01]google dolls i know their most famous song is iris okay oh yeah oh yeah i mean this is a banger right

[07:10]compared to the other two bands now well i mean matchbox 20. awesome

[07:20]what's their biggest great lineup we just had a song by them

[07:24]ago yeah what was the one i just didn't i just have one that i played in the background

[07:29]do you get smooth as a max budget 20 adjacent song no that's that's rob thomas that's rob thomas only

[07:37]okay the other matchbox 20 guys were like are you serious we not we're not part of smooth

[07:42]you know they were there they were like lined up next to record they're like we don't

[07:47]have any of this smooth money terrible what's the best matchbox 20 song man if you're gone

[07:54]bent bent is considered its number one hit let's pull up bent

[07:57]bent yep bent what about the one that's like sunday morning rain is falling oh no that's murdering five

[08:04]i get them confused back to good that's a good one back to good matchbox 20. unwell

[08:12]that's what i mean

[08:17]this is a really easy one for me okay mary is easy for me

[08:24]well okay so you know what let's just go you you killed it right before it hit the

[08:28]no i never do that so okay so let's pick our married right now okay who are you marrying out

[08:38]of this group dave matthews same very dave matthews man all day i gotta i gotta say the same thing

[08:45]that's who i'd wanna spend the most time with that's what are you marrying

[08:48]i did have a dave matthews band cd at one point but here's why i'm i'm gonna

[08:54]dump or kill dave matthews band i can't understand the people who are dave matthews

[09:00]band like they go to all the concerts like there are so many people out there that are diehards

[09:04]like matt is with pearl jam with dave matthews band i don't get it i'm killing them i'm dumb

[09:09]dumping dave matthews band you're doing dave oh wow that's crazy just because you don't like the

[09:16]in-laws i i don't i don't get the space between i don't get the die for it that's what i don't get

[09:21]they're cool i like the band smart this song's better than any google dog

[09:24]this is this is so much better russell i don't care if the fans are the most annoying but on

[09:29]crush is this like an issue where like you learn with like the people adjacent to the

[09:34]person you would potentially marry and that's why you wouldn't want to marry them what what

[09:39]you think you think you think a little real family the big problem is that they're dave matthews fans

[09:44]this this song right here is on my uh oh this is on my top 100 songs of all time this is my only

[09:52]dave matthews band song

[09:54]I could listen to this song on repeat over and over.

[09:57]I love this song.

[09:58]You never stop surprising me, man.

[10:00]Oh, right.

[10:01]This is a good song.

[10:02]Now, of course, you cannot talk about Dave Matthews and not think about his RV dumping poop onto that boat in Chicago.

[10:12]That is the number one reason.

[10:14]Also, the reason I'm marrying them.

[10:15]I like stuff like that.

[10:17]So you guys have all picked Dave Matthews' band.

[10:19]I agree.

[10:20]I like the Dave Matthews' band songs better.

[10:22]Which one are you marrying?

[10:24]Here's the real question.

[10:26]What are you prioritizing, the fucking or the marrying?

[10:31]To me, that's a lifetime commitment.

[10:36]You got to listen to a band for the rest of your days, and you got to listen to their days at work.

[10:42]You got to listen to stuff about maybe if they're running a powerlifting meet, you got to listen to a lot of stuff about that.

[10:48]And actually, when it was over a week ago, you still have to listen to stuff.

[10:51]It's crazy.

[10:52]It's crazy how much more stuff you have to listen to.

[10:53]Or, you know, I think what they...

[10:59]What's the good part about being married again, guys?

[11:00]Tax breaks?

[11:02]What's that?

[11:03]You've been on tax breaks?

[11:04]Nope.

[11:05]As you know, she has thrust us into a much higher tax bracket, as she talked about yesterday,

[11:10]with whether or not I can quit my job last time we were together.

[11:13]I got to say Dave Matthews.

[11:17]I just think the variety is good.

[11:18]I think it's fun.

[11:20]So what are you...

[11:21]What are you having the one-night stand with, and what are you getting rid of?

[11:24]I'll tell you.

[11:25]Let's do one-night stand.

[11:26]Who are we effing?

[11:27]Okay?

[11:27]And who knows what that stands for?

[11:29]Matchbox 20 for me.

[11:31]Really?

[11:32]I'll mess around with them for a little bit.

[11:34]Really?

[11:35]See what happens.

[11:36]Yeah.

[11:36]Goo Goo Dolls are so soft.

[11:39]They're so soft.

[11:40]I can't...

[11:40]I don't know, man.

[11:41]I was going to say Matchbox 22, but once you played Bent, I was like, I'm not sure I can get...

[11:46]I don't know.

[11:46]Bent is bad.

[11:47]I...

[11:48]My Matchbox 20 is so clouded by Rob Thomas being on Smooth that I...

[11:51]I didn't realize how much I don't really dig their stuff.

[11:54]Yeah.

[11:54]Smooth sets you back.

[11:56]Smooth is like if you know that girl, you know, dated the weird knife guy in college.

[12:02]Like, she dated the guy with all the knives in his dorm room, and now she wants to come and mess around with you.

[12:07]Are you going to let knife guy throw you off?

[12:09]Okay?

[12:10]Or is it...

[12:11]Listen, every college...

[12:15]If you went to college, you knew there was a weird knife guy.

[12:17]Yeah, that was...

[12:17]Guy with a collection of knives.

[12:18]Yeah, that was Chris from Lake Oswego.

[12:21]My freshman year, they got me a birthday cake, and he goes...

[12:24]Bright Lights is the song.

[12:25]Put on Bright Lights by Matchbox 20.

[12:27]That's the one we played a couple weeks ago.

[12:28]So, what did Chris from Oswego do?

[12:30]These guys got me a birthday cake my freshman year of college.

[12:33]Russell might have been there.

[12:34]It was a Marvin the Martian cake, and we were sitting down in the dorm...

[12:37]In the lobby, and it was like, oh, we got a cake.

[12:40]We don't have any knives.

[12:40]And Chris from Lake Oswego goes, I got a knife.

[12:43]And he runs up to his room and brings down...

[12:45]What, Russell?

[12:45]Like a nine-inch Bowie knife?

[12:47]Like, just not the sort of thing that you would have expected someone to have in their dorm room.

[12:51]In their dorm room?

[12:52]Something that should have not made it through a metal detector or something along those ways, right?

[12:57]Yeah.

[12:58]There's no way to take a birthday party from lots of fun to unsettling when the guy goes and grabs his knife.

[13:04]I mean, he was the number one fun to unsettling guy I've ever met in my life.

[13:07]Now, I do have to get back to the fact that it was a Marvin the Martian cake.

[13:11]Yeah, I don't know how that happened.

[13:12]I don't know.

[13:13]Maybe I'm imagining that, but I feel like they got me a Marvin the Martian cake.

[13:16]The frosting on this cake was both green and black, two of the grossest frosting colors.

[13:21]We all know it.

[13:22]If you're stuck with black frosting, it is a gross day.

[13:25]Okay?

[13:27]The answer, by the way, is I'm effing around with the Goo Goo Dolls,

[13:29]because I like Iris better than any of these songs that you guys have played me.

[13:32]I think for one night, I could put up with just a true banger.

[13:36]That's kind of right.

[13:36]You know what I mean?

[13:37]It's good, though.

[13:37]I don't think frosting tastes different based on the color, does it?

[13:42]That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

[13:44]I mean, that's the whole joke about red velvet cake, right?

[13:47]It's like red velvet is just red food coloring.

[13:49]Like, black frosting tastes horrible.

[13:51]That's not a joke, though, Aaron, because red velvet cake, it's cream cheese frosting,

[13:55]so it's a totally different taste.

[13:56]But the cake itself.

[13:57]Yeah, but frosting is not red velvet cake, Aaron.

[14:01]Top two frosting flavors.

[14:02]Number one, white.

[14:04]Okay?

[14:04]And number two, okay, is pink.

[14:09]If it's a giant pink flower, we know that's delicious frosting.

[14:13]Green and black frosting, bottom tier, F tier frosting colors.

[14:19]I'm still friends with at least one of those people.

[14:21]Although it's probably, I'm going to guess it was not Russell who got me the cake.

[14:24]If I remember correctly.

[14:26]I would have got that cake, I would have ate that shit myself, Aaron.

[14:29]Sorry, it was not me.

[14:30]But Russell, you wouldn't even have a knife.

[14:33]Wouldn't that slow you down?

[14:34]Just kidding.

[14:36]I once put a hammer in a cake in college.

[14:38]I told you that story, right?

[14:39]What?

[14:39]When I was at the football house.

[14:40]They were having a party, and they had a cake in the middle of the table of the football,

[14:45]and they had a hammer.

[14:46]Well, so you got to pick up the hammer and go, ding, ding, school's in, sucka.

[14:50]And then you use the clock.

[14:51]You use the claw part of the hammer to dig out a piece of cake.

[14:53]That's normal.

[14:54]And then speaking of hooking up more one-night stands,

[14:57]why didn't I have more one-night stands in college?

[14:59]But it didn't have anything to do with the hammer and the cake story,

[15:01]because you know I ate the cake off the hammer, too.

[15:03]That's all.

[15:05]Question.

[15:05]And I think a lot of people didn't like my frosting conversations I had at the party, too,

[15:10]where I'd be like, oh, this is grade A frosting.

[15:11]Yeah, because you're a white supremacist frosting guy.

[15:14]That's not, no.

[15:16]I'm just saying, I'm just, okay, so let's go to Rob wore one of those hoods that looked like,

[15:21]like a frosting thing with a thing cut out on the top.

[15:23]Is that going to come out?

[15:27]Oh, my God.

[15:30]He's putting it in the star-shaped thing on his hat.

[15:32]He's doing a different shape frosting.

[15:34]Oh, that joke is funny.

[15:41]But if you tried to explain to somebody, they would never want to listen to this podcast.

[15:44]So let's talk about dump.

[15:47]Who are we dumping out of this group?

[15:48]Okay.

[15:49]Oh, I guess, I guess that's just who's left, right?

[15:50]I got to say.

[15:51]Smashbox 20.

[15:51]And I think too, Aaron, I think smooth really screwed me up.

[15:54]Let's listen to smooth.

[15:55]Let's see if that's better than we think.

[15:56]Yeah.

[15:57]Carlos Santana on it.

[15:58]It's like, it's, it's on the graph of cheesy to great.

[16:05]It's like up in the right quadrant.

[16:08]Like it's cheesy and great.

[16:09]I heard this song so many times growing up.

[16:15]I agree.

[16:16]This clouds Smashbox 20.

[16:17]Matt, you're getting rid of Google dolls because they're soft, huh?

[16:19]Yeah.

[16:21]I saw the first concert I ever went to, like, like, you know, my mom dropped me off and

[16:25]went with a couple of buddies was Google dolls opening up for Bush from Google dolls soft

[16:32]to Bush who good thing I had two pair of socks on that day.

[16:36]Cause one of them got rocked off.

[16:37]That's good.

[16:38]You know, it was good.

[16:39]I had, it was, it was not even close.

[16:42]So I just, I haven't liked them since then.

[16:44]They did not have a good first impression.

[16:47]Russell, I can't remember what you said, but did you just already say you're going to dump

[16:51]Dave Matthews?

[16:52]Yeah.

[16:53]I don't like their pants.

[16:53]Get them out of here.

[16:54]I'm out.

[16:55]Oh my God.

[16:56]Aaron can't deal with it.

[16:58]Can you say something that's such a transition us to the Rolling Stones section?

[17:01]No Rolling Stones section.

[17:03]Well, they're rolling going section.

[17:05]We need a joke to get out of the voicemail section, but this is the hardest thing.

[17:09]Yes.

[17:10]I'm not the joke guy.

[17:13]Aaron.

[17:13]Okay.

[17:14]How about this?

[17:14]Uh, this song reminds me a lot of what, uh, Santana's favorite peanut butter.

[17:21]Collection is, you know what that is, Aaron?

[17:22]It's got to be crunchy.

[17:24]Everybody's here.

[17:25]It's got to be the organic stir, the organic stir peanut butter.

[17:28]It is organic.

[17:30]He's dumb as shit.

[17:32]Santana famously came out and said, duh, duh, duh.

[17:36]I like you only have to stir it once, Rob.

[17:39]Yeah, right.

[17:40]It also, I, that happens to me sometimes, right?

[17:42]Open up the peanut butter and there's some liquid in there.

[17:44]You know what?

[17:45]Closing it back up.

[17:46]Don't need peanut butter that bad in my life.

[17:47]Not going to stir my peanut butter.

[17:49]I was going through.

[17:50]I have a, what's, what's one of these things called a lazy Susan.

[17:53]One of these things in the cabinet where you spin it around and it's got everything in

[17:56]there.

[17:57]And I was looking through the other day and I came across a canister of Aaron's.

[18:02]You got to stir it.

[18:03]Peanut butter.

[18:04]I was like, you gotta be shitting me.

[18:05]Oh, it's so good, man.

[18:07]It's just, it's just peanuts.

[18:08]That's all that's in there.

[18:09]Maybe some salt.

[18:10]You know, Russ spun that shit back to the back.

[18:12]Get out of my sight.

[18:14]He spins it around.

[18:15]It's gone.

[18:15]Uh, Roland, Roland going here.

[18:17]And how's it going with you?

[18:18]It's going pretty well.

[18:19]I do.

[18:19]I want to let you know.

[18:20]Russell, I will happily stir your peanut butter anytime.

[18:22]Uh, number one thing I was a little bit late getting on the podcast tonight.

[18:27]We don't have to talk about it.

[18:28]Um, I'm sorry to keep you guys up late, but I have to, I had to watch the Iowa state cyclones

[18:34]close out their first 10 win season in program history for the victory over K state.

[18:40]So I was, I was pumped up to watch that.

[18:42]So I super enjoyed it.

[18:44]And of course, Rob is about to play the university of Iowa fight song.

[18:47]We love the Hawks.

[18:50]I got my Brad Banks Jersey on tonight.

[18:53]Go Hawks.

[18:54]He lost.

[18:55]He lost to the cyclones in his only, in his, in his orange bowl season.

[18:59]He had two losses.

[19:00]One was to Iowa state.

[19:01]Aaron, I'm just coming over as a Hawk.

[19:03]I'm going to come over and shake your hand right now.

[19:05]So if you'll just shake my hand, I think everything's going to be fine.

[19:07]No problems there.

[19:08]Happy to shake hands.

[19:09]So I would say that's what's immediately happening with me, but I want to ask you guys, I, I don't

[19:13]get out as much as Russell does, but I wanted to tell a, I wanted to do like a little bit

[19:17]of a story about, uh, hanging out with a bartender.

[19:20]And again, I'm going to do a little bit of a story about, uh, hanging out with a bartender.

[19:20]I'm going to get you guys thoughts on this.

[19:22]So in, uh, when we spoke last, I was in, I was in Arizona.

[19:25]So on my way back from Arizona, I was in the Phoenix airport.

[19:28]It had been a day.

[19:29]Uh, I was, it was afternoon.

[19:31]So I was like, okay, I'm going to go get a drink at the bar.

[19:34]But first I walked around for a bit.

[19:35]In fact, I even listened to this podcast.

[19:37]I was walking around the airport, listening to this podcast.

[19:38]Wow.

[19:39]I got to say you guys, the, the Charleston and the job of the hut joke.

[19:43]Uh, very funny.

[19:45]Some good stuff.

[19:46]Thank you.

[19:46]Yeah.

[19:46]Thank you.

[19:47]I mean, really though, Aaron, imagine you're in the twenties.

[19:50]Okay.

[19:51]Oh, let's go down to the store.

[19:52]I'm going to buy my favorite kind of candy.

[19:53]Charleston chew.

[19:55]I'm going to go home and dance.

[19:57]I'm dancing the Charleston.

[19:58]No wonder it was called the great depression.

[20:00]That's the joke I should have made.

[20:02]So, and there was some good, I think there was some good vocal effects.

[20:06]I don't know.

[20:06]You guys make a good podcast.

[20:08]Russell's 1920s voice was very good.

[20:11]Russell, what would a 1920s guy have to say about frosting?

[20:14]I'm going to steal this Charleston chew out of this.

[20:17]I'm Rob.

[20:18]My name's I'm Rob.

[20:19]I'm going to steal this Charleston chew.

[20:20]Out of this station here.

[20:22]Cause I don't pay for shit.

[20:23]Yeah.

[20:24]Hey, fellow 1920s guy.

[20:27]What's your favorite kind of frosting?

[20:28]Red frosting.

[20:30]Right?

[20:31]Oh my God.

[20:32]That's red.

[20:32]You know what?

[20:34]Red worse than green, Russell.

[20:35]You just reminded me.

[20:36]Red is one of the, if you get a full thing and it's a slight, it's just red frosting.

[20:40]You know, you're in for a gross ass time.

[20:42]Isn't that what like the flowers are Rob?

[20:44]I like kind of cake.

[20:44]Aren't the flowers like red?

[20:46]Pink.

[20:46]Pink.

[20:47]Russell, bro.

[20:48]You got to buy more cakes.

[20:49]I wouldn't know any of this stuff.

[20:50]I got to tell you, Aaron airport bars, an all time great place to get like a 2 PM drink.

[20:57]Yes.

[20:57]So that's what I did.

[20:58]It was 2 PM.

[20:59]And I was like, I've been walking around all day.

[21:01]I had done a little bit of a hike in the morning.

[21:02]I was like, I'm going to get myself a whiskey.

[21:04]I walk in the front of the breast re-zinc.

[21:06]They had blends, a couple of other things.

[21:08]I was like, I'm going to sit down and get a whiskey.

[21:10]And it was one of those where it still has the sign that says, please wait to be seated,

[21:14]which like even in an airport is just like, wow, I can't believe we're doing this, but

[21:18]cool.

[21:18]I'll sit down and wait.

[21:19]And the bartender was like, I'm going to sit down and get a whiskey.

[21:20]Kind of a grizzled veteran bartender looking guy.

[21:23]And so like you waited, you waited the sign and we took him like big country, country

[21:28]grizzled.

[21:28]Mike, what are we talking about?

[21:30]Honestly, he kind of did look like big country.

[21:32]He was like a big, big dude had a little bit of like a mullet kind of going on.

[21:37]Kind of like a, definitely like a, like a pro wrestler jobber goatee, you know, like

[21:42]you're exactly right, Russell.

[21:43]So he's got to wave you over and he's the kind of guy who goes your brother right away

[21:47]or, you know, friend or whatever, you know, you know.

[21:50]right you know who this might have been at any point now let me just ask you this at any point

[21:57]did he talk about owning a truck that had big arms in the front of it remember that when hulk

[22:02]hogan also had like a monster truck like that's the height of being a man is when you have a monster

[22:07]truck named after you there's not many people that have done that i'm all set to get a whiskey and so

[22:12]he has to like motion you over and it's like it's like a it's like a ceremony right it's like you've

[22:16]been blessed when our bartender like points at you points to a seat so you're already in the

[22:21]mindset of like yes this guy controls his space like this is his domain right so i'm blessed to

[22:26]sit at his bar and so i sit down he kind of has this it's just like kind of like hang dog that

[22:31]kind of quiet demeanor and he's like uh what do you want man like a ipa ipa or something like that

[22:36]and i was like yeah i guess i need an ipa like this guy knows what i know what this guy knows

[22:41]what i want better than i do so of course i'm like yeah look at the ipa and i was perfectly

[22:46]happy with it it was great but then it turns out that's his thing like he tries to guess everybody's

[22:51]drink when they sit down like he's trying to like this is how he's entertaining himself at work my

[22:56]favorite one was a younger guy sits down next to me you know kind of like a i don't know hipster

[23:01]looking dude and so he's like what do you want a modelo and the guy wanted white wine and he knew

[23:05]exactly he didn't even look at the list the guy knew exactly what wine he wanted he totally threw

[23:10]the whole wrench in the

[23:11]whole thing and of course my friend the bartender handled it with aplomb but it was a fun experience

[23:17]is there a drink he could say that is yours that you would be insulted by

[23:20]don't say slippery don't say slippery nipple although that would be funny you look like a

[23:28]slippery nipple guy well i don't know like maybe if he just said like hey you look like you need

[23:32]to diet coke oh that's rough that would be tough that's true what are you saying sir that is rough

[23:41]anyway

[23:41]diet right diet right diet right diet donald trump has said a lot of things but when he did say that

[23:47]he's never seen a skinny person drinking a diet coke i think about that almost every week i mean

[23:52]look at this these are by the way the diet cokes they have in new york they have these tall boy

[23:56]diet cokes i've shown you guys this before right hey your hands look really small yeah no i've got

[24:01]i've i've got huge hands actually i mean i i know we have a lot of hard seltzer fans on or uh fans

[24:07]on the call tonight but i like i think if i sat down and and listening

[24:11]i think if i sat down and he like cracked open a high noon from the cooler i'd be like

[24:15]hey man i do want like a proper drink at this moment in my life not that i'm against the high

[24:20]i mean i like seltzers but i think if it was like those are for all day drink right you know those

[24:25]are for the uh the marathon not the sprint yes you get not for quality if you're drinking for

[24:29]quality you're not drinking a fucking yeah you get it you know i truly disagree with you guys

[24:35]are you ordering it truly at the bar russell though no way no chance

[24:41]i did i went to this bar in new york where with every drink you got you got a free hot dog

[24:46]and i but so i was like well i'm gonna get came with a free hot dog oh yeah so the bartender

[24:52]would give that would be a proper proper time to get a seltzer i i just got seltzers there

[24:57]and the bartender would give you the drinks and then go and turn around and put on latex gloves

[25:01]and then take out a bun from a bag of buns in the back and then go into the dirty water

[25:07]and give you as many hot dogs as drinks you got so if you got four drinks you got four hot dogs

[25:11]and it was a cheap if you come here rosie we're going i think this place might be named rosie's

[25:16]i feel like there's a pig out front is it place named bar in new york just give me i just i just

[25:21]was appreciating this guy's approach to his job he he didn't just let you he he controlled the

[25:26]space and even when somebody threw him off he was he was okay with it so i like that i like how

[25:31]somebody like makes some choices and makes that makes the thing their own so that's it fun to see

[25:35]fun to see people good at their job that's like any person in any sort of like tourist town right

[25:43]it's like disney world you know in vegas we run across this in vegas right where so you just know

[25:49]they're not being very genuine but that's their job they know they're there for you're there for

[25:53]one weekend and you're never like who is that gal that knows john from owatonna what was her name

[25:58]last year do we even remember no are you serious like we talked for like three days right because

[26:05]minnesota things like that she's just trying to be friendly it's like that like you have to if you

[26:10]know you don't have regulars coming or something like that you have to find a job you have to find

[26:14]a way to make your job enjoyable like that right you might as well just mess with tourists at the

[26:18]airport but if you remember that that so that woman you're talking about was our waitress at

[26:21]vegas for the football game so she saw us for multiple days eight hours at a time and we would

[26:26]get like we she would kind of drop the facade a little bit and then tell us real things that were

[26:30]going on and without fail every one of them made us super depressed for like the last

[26:35]time

[26:35]she'd be like well my husband and i split up but i still moved out here with them

[26:41]we're like oh yeah we still live together yeah we're like oh god i wish you would have said that

[26:46]you know what aaron if the guy what if the guy came out and said you look like a white russian

[26:51]guy that'd be pretty ball i would have had to drink one right i'd be like i mean i'd have to

[26:55]been like well it's your bar this is what you think i need i mean that's what dude abides

[26:59]i would love to be a white russian guy god that'd be good and it's probably not me but that's me how

[27:05]is everyone going with russell we're only going things are good i went to a thanksgiving day

[27:10]celebration um with some uh i don't know what you'd call them uh people and there was about

[27:17]20 people at this would you call them in laws you can't couldn't pick a worse name than people

[27:22]just like people humans so i get there and it turned out there there ended up being about 20

[27:28]people there there was more than i was expecting but you know i don't know what threw me off about

[27:32]this thanksgiving day celebration yeah

[27:35]the number of dogs that were at this oh yeah what do you think is the limit on dogs that should be

[27:42]allowed at a thanksgiving day celebration one and they better be under better be like under four

[27:48]months or something like where you have to watch them or something like that i'm telling you russell

[27:52]to me it's about five or six bring all the dogs in i love a thanksgiving with dogs you got dogs

[27:57]around they're all over the place some of the dogs like you some of the dogs don't i love having some

[28:01]dogs around we hit the high we hit the high first i want to say this

[28:05]very clearly food was great all the people were great okay great time yeah but over six and a half

[28:12]dogs over six and a half dogs might be too many for us seven dogs at the thanksgiving at once i

[28:19]was like this is crazy how does everyone handle all these dogs right around and most of them were

[28:24]you know well-behaved dogs you know they weren't causing a problem but it got a little bit much

[28:28]what are your guys thoughts seven dogs at a thanksgiving day celebration

[28:32]did you ever have the urge to just get the dogs totally

[28:35]whipped up like you start

[28:36]they're like stop barking i mean in a lot of cases dogs are not gonna like kids are gonna be

[28:44]even worse than dogs but it's yeah sure every every well-behaved dog is well behaved in their

[28:50]own home or under the certain circumstances but when you get seven over six and a half dogs

[28:55]together it doesn't matter which ones are well behaved there's gonna be some shit going down

[28:59]what's the worst thing you saw a dog do did any of them eat food off the table no there was no eating

[29:05]food off the table so that none of them were that bad there was like the occasional little dog who

[29:08]was like walking on the back of the couch or whatever that no big deal but one of the dogs

[29:12]was a very loud high-pitched barker and um this is something like i have got this problem with like

[29:19]loud unexpected noises does that make sense like i don't i don't respond well to it it freaks like

[29:25]if someone were to drop something unexpected it it it catches me it i'm not ready for it

[29:31]and the one dog was a very loud high-pitched barker

[29:34]but most of the dogs were like i don't know what to do with it i don't know what to do with it

[29:35]most of the dogs were fantastic i just was like seven is a lot a lot of dark like what kind of

[29:40]space are we in here picturing russell's face when he's at this family event and you know already he's

[29:46]like and then he shows up and there's like seven dogs and one of them barks and russell flinches

[29:54]and everybody goes oh russell you flinch when the dog bark that they make fun of russell for

[29:57]flinching and he's just sitting there like get me out of here just out of here russell's russell you

[30:04]see russell go

[30:05]to the kitchen he goes uh a dog pooped on the floor comes back well i think part of the the

[30:10]the thing with having the dogs like aaron you mentioned it or matt you said one is the

[30:14]appropriate it should be the dog that lives there none of the other ones i think part of the crazy

[30:18]thing is you saw all the people like tending to their dog making sure the dog wasn't getting into

[30:25]some so they're constantly like running after making sure the dog's all right and it just

[30:29]seemed like a lot it seemed like a lot more stress than what i would be able or capable of handling

[30:35]i finally this is the first thanksgiving i've had where my kids are old enough both of them

[30:39]are old enough to just sit and watch football or do their own thing or hang out with the other

[30:43]cousins stuff like that where i didn't have to watch them it's been literally like 12 years of

[30:47]like watching kids to make sure they're not pulling crap down and everything why would you

[30:52]add a dog that's right you made it like why would you i don't know and it's probably people

[30:58]is there people with kids and dogs or is it just like dog parents that are bringing their dogs along

[31:05]i think it was uh people without kids that brought dogs people with kids i and i think it's it's just

[31:10]a family where everyone's like a dog owner right yeah and so it makes sense like if you were to go

[31:15]back to your parents you bring your dog what do you mean yeah rob how do you know well i just to

[31:19]me what i'm picturing is that you get the newlywed couple and i bet the husband is a rural guy who

[31:25]bought a dog that he wants to go hunting with so his way of interacting with the dog and i'm not

[31:29]gonna do it now because i'll yell i'll wake up people is just yelling at the dog like he's in

[31:35]there's always guys who are like 23 when they have a dog they're like chelsea don't get over here and

[31:39]you're like dude we just shut up we do not care that your dog is not returning the throwable

[31:44]duck toy that you've been playing with for the past three hours okay just shut the fuck up stop

[31:51]yelling at your goddamn dog we don't care okay we like like matt said we just release ourselves

[31:56]of kids duty now matt if you are like me you did buy a dog who immediately had a number of health

[32:00]problems uh haven't you done this twice oh no including now the dog is like oh my god i'm

[32:05]just itchy like that's one of his main problems being blind is even still eating underwear is

[32:09]this oh yeah well i didn't have to just buy underwear for my daughter she says the dog is

[32:13]still eating that he is not eating as much as mine because he can't see anymore a lot of my

[32:16]underwear is very visual how much your underwear huh just kidding i think i think he gets it i'm

[32:25]not gonna lie he gets it by scent he's not exactly a sighthound anymore roll it go man

[32:29]how's it going with you uh good good i uh i thought i'd just continue our list from last

[32:35]week just oh yes well also joe from woodbury wouldn't be can i just show you guys this i

[32:42]gotta delete this i gotta delete this picture because it keeps distracting me but look at this

[32:45]the hulk all good monster truck it is very hulkster i mean it's got his big arms can you

[32:50]imagine having arms so cool it's on the side of a monster truck if a guy pulled up to my house

[32:55]and he had the truck with the hulkster arms and he came in and then fucked my wife

[32:59]i would get it to me i would get that i'd be like this guy gets it

[33:05]to fuck my wife look at this car he pulled how much sushi are we talking oh

[33:07]especially in new york city there's nowhere to park that truck

[33:12]no you can't invite brother i'm double parked i gotta fuck your wife real quick

[33:15]i just ate a bunch i mean you know too he's eating rolls right he's not eating sashimi

[33:22]right he's he's having the heat up in there and he's doing like the big like the deep fried rolls

[33:27]you know what i mean like like stuff on there and yeah yeah shrimp tempura with hot sauce and

[33:34]that scorpion roll gotta go fuck my friend's wife oh brother and don't forget he got a call from his

[33:43]son mid-banging and picked it up which is true that's it i gotta now you gotta admit that guy's

[33:49]a good dad because if i was banging my friend's wife and my kid called there's a very low chance

[33:55]i'm picking up that call hello what do you need you need starbucks for your friends okay sorry go

[34:02]ahead man you were saying uh

[34:04]just gonna for joe from woodbury just so i wasn't hanging on tenterhooks yeah for next week uh so

[34:12]i think we got to about 45 i think we just talked about big lebowski that was like number 43 or

[34:18]something like that so i've just got a few highlights i say this i loved owning soundtracks

[34:23]growing up i thought soundtracks were a fun way to collect a vibe album without having to buy all

[34:29]the albums like i think the forest gum soundtrack it's really really good it was like a classic in

[34:33]our house and if you love to move

[34:34]you felt like you needed to get the soundtrack yes i always i liked all that what was the there

[34:39]was a 19 rap see if you can look this i think it was 1994 uh x games soundtrack kind of a thing

[34:46]that had just a whole bunch of songs see what presents x games the soundtrack album

[34:53]or if you loved end of the road and realized that it wasn't on

[34:56]fully high harmony you had to buy the boomerang soundtrack exactly yeah that's a good point

[35:03]it's a great point if one of the number

[35:04]one things that the boom it wasn't because it's like goddamn you know what movie i want to think

[35:09]about when i'm listening to music boomerang i've never seen the x games volume one rob go x games

[35:16]volume one x games volume one geez higher ground by chili peppers so click on click on that five

[35:23]more so higher ground by pepper chili by the way can i just say this this was the song are you

[35:27]gonna go my way this was the song awesome kingdom by toady this is the song when you guys hear this

[35:32]is so funny by court so of course i had that bass i had that bass i had that bass i had that bass

[35:34]i brought to college with the amp now i was not a music major i was not a band i was not good at

[35:39]playing bass let you in the music library we've discussed nobody was getting in the music library

[35:43]i just played it and it must have bugged can you imagine somebody practicing bass while you're at

[35:47]football camp can you imagine something more annoying to your life not a bass just a bad guy

[35:52]playing bass the other guard comes in pete who it turns out guess what he played in the jazz band in

[35:58]his high school okay i'll give you one guess the bass he pulls up and goes hey can i play that real

[36:03]quick he then plays this

[36:04]now after he played this i packed up that bass and i brought it home

[36:08]and i never touched it again because he in front of everybody with my bass he played this song

[36:13]i mean what the fuck he did this yes he did this might as well play your other instrument from i

[36:23]was just like it's a good thing i beat his ass for a starting spot my freshman year when he was

[36:29]a year older than me because he dominated me in bass playing that's man this is one of the i know

[36:34]about the chili peppers ones but that's a mind like stevie wonder probably played that

[36:38]bass line with his fingers right he probably played it on a key on a synthesizer and then

[36:43]flea was like well yeah i can do that on a bass fucking guitar it's crazy good now listen to the

[36:47]rest of this are you gonna go my way lenny kravitz a guy who we have not talked about enough on this

[36:52]podcast okay once again i will say you can't you can do worse than putting on a lenny kravitz album

[36:59]any time of your life yeah it's great jerry a little primus jerry was a race car driver uh

[37:04]oh here we go google dolls guys google dolls only one so man you think of google dolls are soft

[37:10]well maybe you haven't listened to xp put that one on quick i don't remember i think i skipped

[37:14]over that one okay yeah you don't remember xk now we're gonna start the episode over

[37:19]what are we gonna do we're never gonna get i knew this is a good voicemail this video is weird

[37:28]i like this i don't remember this

[37:34]hey google dolls i'm glad we're we effed one night okay on my navy on my navy blue sheets

[37:42]happen to be a notch in your bed you know there's i'm looking about the sixth one down on your list

[37:47]there was the 20 worst live performances of all time we have to we would have to put that in the

[37:52]okay that's in the tickler file joe it's in the tickler file you know what you know what's not

[37:58]in the worst live performances of all time the dolphins lament that's in the best

[38:04]it's one of their best albums a lot of people say that one of i've heard a lot of people saying that

[38:08]all right let me get through this quick so number 30 was uh singles the the movie singles and had

[38:14]you know pearl jam was on their smash pumpkins paul westerberg wasn't with the uh he had some

[38:19]solo yeah so by the way is his replacements guy did he literally just listen through 156 and say

[38:27]screw you guys i'm done i think he sent me a text today that he's recently decided the beatles are

[38:33]good so if you want to update on replacement guy yeah well you know what replacements guy we should

[38:40]call him up because he's gonna like the end of this list he just heard hide your love away for

[38:43]the first time he's like these guys are pretty good he sounds like russ at the beginning of this

[38:47]podcast okay these beatles guys are pretty good hey yeah if if if uh he likes the beatles he

[38:54]should listen to a little band called back there's a whole podcast about that yeah right

[39:03]uh number 25 one of my favorite movies of all time almost famous uh it's great soundtrack water

[39:09]you know when they're playing tiny dancer singing yeah they're singing that it's great all time

[39:15]number 19 one of john from edina's favorite movies well almost famous is one of his favorites as well

[39:21]i know that but boogie nights oh soundtrack to boogie nights is number 19 soundtrack

[39:25]is that a sister christian on it night ranger uh yeah of course it does motor in uh number

[39:33]17 this is spinal tap which gets funnier the more you watch can i first couple times you watch you

[39:38]don't get that i know every song on that album i know every song i know every lyrics i played it

[39:44]before but one of the greatest songs of all time okay of course is oh my god how can i type in sex

[39:51]form right you know what i mean like how hard is it to just type and those songs are all the

[39:56]originals that were written for the movie is that correct yes a hundred percent

[40:03]all right but it's kind of like uh what was the movie with mark walberg where he filled in as the

[40:13]singer uh invincible

[40:14]you know he was head to the born identity the born identity

[40:24]whoever he filled in you know the like the actual songs they're actually pretty darn good songs that

[40:32]they had there is just like

[40:33]like spinal tap uh number 16 which again kind of crazy that it's at 16 uh i'm sorry 16 is good

[40:40]fellas i just i love that movie so like number 13 i would think this would be a little bit higher

[40:45]but oh brother where art thou is that number 13 what that's 13 russell did you hear that that's

[40:50]top five oh brother without thar is that 13th i mean top 20 that's a respectable spot i think it's

[40:56]gotta be top 10 i don't know that's gotta be all right top 10 now something called wild style from

[41:03]1983 it was like a kind of first hip-hop yeah i mean that feels like a cultural artifact kind of

[41:08]choice i don't know number nine american graffiti good movie number eight the graduate i mean i

[41:14]remember you know they had the song this is robinson from there yeah but that's is that i

[41:19]mean that deserves to be that up high i don't think so i don't think so number seven which i

[41:24]you know again we were young when this came out this is we were impressionable but number seven

[41:29]is pulp fiction that is a killer soundtrack that had

[41:32]the song jungle boogie on it of course okay which you would never confuse for a different song

[41:37]earlier all right jungle boogie is such a great song by cool in the gang oh i love it all right

[41:44]number six superfly which we've already had is number 76 on the list yeah number five saturday

[41:50]fever which is number 163 in the list so superfly which is 76 higher which means it has a lower

[41:59]number lower on the list which means it has a higher number yeah that makes sense to me

[42:02]number four for replacements guy hard day's night oh number four soundtrack of all time check it out

[42:09]hard i don't is that i can't believe is that really a soundtrack though wasn't that in an

[42:14]album that they made a movie too i mean that wasn't true so number three the harder they come

[42:20]which we had at 174 i agree that was a pretty yeah that was fun soundtrack number two

[42:28]for replacements guy movie help

[42:32]there's two beatles yeah like give me give me a break so we will come to that we will hear that

[42:39]at 266 in about a year from now what the hell that's so crazy who made this list it's like

[42:46]they're like okay how are we gonna piss people off guys thank god we did make a podcast about

[42:50]this dumb list you know what i mean and then number one uh again is it a soundtrack or is

[42:56]it just album but purple rain number one soundtrack of all time which is number eight on our list yeah

[43:02]i guess it is a soundtrack yeah but then again the bodyguard is number one that's crazy guys that's

[43:09]that's the craziest that's that yeah see to me the soundtrack should be movies that the director

[43:14]picked to go with it like i think if you listen to the rush singles the rushmore soundtrack that

[43:19]that's on there that's pretty it's one of the greatest soundtracks of all time because it

[43:23]totally defines what the movie feels like it gives you a sense of the movie right help is not doing

[43:30]that rush rush bar was number 12.

[43:32]rob so it was yeah that's a great it's a great one mark mother's bar yeah as great as purple rain is

[43:37]it it was a companion piece with the movie they're not they're not yeah yeah or is part of their by

[43:43]or pants or is part of the problem that the album's so big that you don't think about the movie as

[43:46]much as you think about the album yeah i i don't know i don't know so that that's it rob rolling

[43:53]going how's it going with you here's the deal morning radio shows i found out have a a uh

[43:58]you know i'm obsessed with like morning radio i love the idea i wanted to be on the radio show

[44:02]i used to listen to lots of morning radio shows and they have a formula which they call the dick

[44:08]the dork and the deer okay so we got to figure out who on this podcast well oh no let's just go

[44:14]through it i'm not sure the way it sets up is there's a guy who is the dick who is mean and

[44:20]causes trouble okay who kind of just goes against what other people say all the time oh boy all right

[44:26]and who sometimes is actually some of the most attractive of the whole the whole thing

[44:32]then there is the dork okay the person on the podcast who is socially awkward who's kind of a

[44:38]nerd okay who does weird stuff k fan k fan in the uh the twin cities has this nailed uh and then

[44:45]there is the deer who is the person that everybody loves who's really really nice okay so my question

[44:52]is what's russell you know what i mean like what is russell on this show we need to come up with

[44:58]another d word to describe russell i think

[45:02]the the dichotomy of all of them the director i like that i don't know russell i have all these

[45:09]pictures russell has got russell is a really interesting guy to have on a music podcast

[45:12]because when we started his musical knowledge his pop culture knowledge is almost is is not it's not

[45:19]zero because you do have this very like if it's a show on fx about a group of guys doing something

[45:24]russell is seeing the shit out of that show you know what i mean i'm doing rescue me right now

[45:28]oh my god you're doing rescue me

[45:30]i'm gonna

[45:32]but russell has russell has a weird like pop culture gaps and i think when we started he had

[45:40]almost no musical knowledge right like he had no russell he plays a role but he had more musical

[45:48]knowledge than you think he he knows stuff remember his choir list he knew a lot of stuff

[45:54]that's true eyes the boy that builds the boat rob yep yep i don't know what d word do you think you

[46:00]are on the podcast russell i'm the d word for you

[46:02]i'm out going and doing things that makes this podcast fun to listen to right wow

[46:07]russell that's why you're the doer do do and do that's crazy that's true wait wait wait wait

[46:16]so who's who's the dick what matt you're raising your hand

[46:23]or you are you pointing up to my zoom though like this is a pretty bunch of situation

[46:32]i mean rob's obviously the dork right rob's obviously no i'm obviously the deer so i play

[46:39]a character on this show where i argue with people and i make fun of people things i would never do in

[46:43]real life people okay oh yeah and make make fun of everyone equally matt and aaron both have dork

[46:50]and deer qualities i would say that they've probably got those roles split appreciate that

[46:55]you did that song you wrote last week was a pretty dick continue to bring out well the worst part

[47:02]was is i didn't share with the text change just like you said i shared it with the text yeah of

[47:07]course we knew that was going on and the response was underwhelming so i was like the guys were

[47:11]right it wasn't good so you know sometimes you just get sometimes you get misses you know what

[47:15]i mean yeah i know the i know the beatles they wrote a couple songs they're like this is gonna

[47:19]crush and nobody liked it they're like well for those that don't know rob had an inappropriate

[47:23]song last week that's not going to be shared with the general public yeah and i had to nicely put

[47:29]to him chicago guy can email if he wants to hear it i i

[47:32]nicely said in a text rob i'm not trying to be critical but this i think would need to come out

[47:38]if this were me it would need to come out and then matt matt immediately followed up and said it has

[47:43]to come out which i appreciated matt uh jumping on board and and he did the right thing he knew

[47:49]what had to happen with the way you guys text me with baby gloves on okay and yeah that's what they

[47:54]are they're the softest of gloves they're baby you said you take that stuff personally so i was

[47:59]you would think i exploded you would think i explode into a

[48:02]rage when you guys think my songs are too dirty i get it okay a song a parody to truck and that's

[48:07]not about rucking i get why that would be too dirty okay i understand it and i appreciate the

[48:14]feedback okay i would rather put out a song about rucking than one where if people thought maybe

[48:18]having a certain kind of sex was you know not as funny as maybe other people in this podcast thought

[48:22]it was then i appreciate the help with that i really do so i i've now just learned whatever

[48:27]russ says with the edits that's good i used to fight for him i don't do that anymore because i

[48:31]just trust him

[48:32]okay now we start if we start litigating this f word though we are going to have an issue about

[48:37]that because i think the f word is very funny okay and the word is not funny here and i can

[48:42]see you look confused russell hit him with the f word can you bleep it for nobody's favorite oh

[48:47]yeah it's finger fucking oh just kidding just kidding i'm putting the i'm putting a big echo

[48:53]behind it here and it's gonna be the loudest thing you've ever heard it's gonna be like he's saying

[48:57]it to god himself uh listen let's talk about either or

[49:02]he hit us with a double f word by the way there yeah yeah double f we're talking about either or

[49:07]by elliot smith so you here's the thing with elliot smith right is that this is another one i'm just

[49:12]going to spoiler alert for the end here elliot smith ends up stabbing himself in the chest at

[49:17]the end of this whole thing right we've had a couple artists like this who kind of put out

[49:20]albums who are these where you know kind of like a jeff buckley thing right you know the tragic end

[49:25]so it kind of paints the whole album with a separate thing a lot like uh nick drake right

[49:30]same thing with nick drake like just

[49:32]you know it you you can't help but think of the album in terms of this guy's life

[49:36]elliot smith goes to hampshire college in amherst massachusetts makes the band heat miser okay while

[49:42]he's in heat miser he is now living in portland and he comes out with this kind of guitar and

[49:48]soft voice music he's recording it on a on a ford track and in a friend's apartment and it's so

[49:54]opposite this is 1997 this is so opposite the grunge that's big in the northeast at the time

[50:01]he said uh he said that going to going out to play an acoustic show in the northwest was like

[50:06]crawling on a limb of a tree and begging it for it to be sawed off like you just you it wasn't the

[50:11]kind of music everybody was into on this album uh elliot smith plays all the instruments themselves

[50:16]after this album comes out he hits it big the friends have intervention for alcohol abuse at

[50:22]the same time gus van zandt says also from portland by the way the director says i love this music i'm

[50:28]gonna put three of your songs into uh uh goodwill hunting including a song called i think mercy me

[50:36]which is not on this album but it's one he performed at the academy awards uh and basically

[50:41]they said we want you to play uh no miss misery sorry they said we want you to play this at the

[50:47]academy awards and he says i don't want to and they said okay we'll get another artist to play it

[50:50]and he's like okay fine i'll play it which i think is so it's so nasty to do to some small

[50:55]indie artist oh it's disgusting

[50:58]uh and then uh yeah and then after this the music comes out at people it it's actually a kind of a

[51:05]big hit like nationwide elliot smith at the time you know nme knew who he was like all these

[51:10]magazines knew he was he wasn't like totally like he was sort of a critical darling in a way

[51:15]was was his heat miser music was heat miser this kind of band were they i don't know let's listen

[51:21]to their story heat miser i don't know what did you know about elliot smith before by the way heat

[51:28]miser i think it's the devil there's no space i didn't know much i remember the when um it's when

[51:38]from a basement on a hill was coming out i remember reading about that and maybe even

[51:41]downloading it from a music blog here's heat miser i i have never heard of wow elliot smith

[51:51]until this episode did you think he was british russell i had no idea what to expect i had never

[51:58]heard of him kind of sounds british doesn't it yeah for sure um what did you i i've never i don't

[52:04]know that i this seems like the kind of music i would like i mean let's get into it right but

[52:08]like here's speed trial so he actually recorded this in the friend's apartment

[52:12]on a four-track recorder now it might surprise you i got my hands on a multi-track recorder

[52:17]when i was in high school and i loved it that might shock you guys good one now

[52:22]didn't we try to record a podcast once on the multi-track recorder it didn't work out i know

[52:28]it worked out fine here could have been anyone's fault well yeah we don't we don't do it anymore

[52:33]because nobody liked recording the podcast we would rather be gambling or hiking we're not sure

[52:38]yeah you get it i mean to me this is exactly what my pandora station is this is nice music right like

[52:44]this is good the only thing is i do think it can get a little atonal sometimes or like a weird

[52:51]there's a weird tonality the whole album yeah i hear that like you don't know what pitch he's

[52:57]actually singing right he's kind of like somewhere in between the pitches always

[52:59]but i think like so many songs on that pandora station i have i think if you hear him like a

[53:04]hundred times and now when i'm catching in headphones he's got the vocals double tracked

[53:09]right he's got one in each yeah here that's kind of true yeah i mean that's the thing is that he

[53:13]i think it's interesting him playing all the instruments i do think this album is well

[53:18]produced for the most part it's interesting sonically interesting um alameda about alameda

[53:25]street in portland i don't know if you've heard of alameda street in portland i don't know if you've

[53:26]ever heard of alameda street in portland i don't know if you've heard of alameda street in portland

[53:27]that's where he spent most of his youth guys if i had to name a song after the street you spent

[53:32]most of your youth on what would it be i asked the question i'll go first for me skyline lane

[53:37]wow that's what the song would be called what a great street to live on doesn't that just

[53:40]sound fun living on skyline lane that sounds like a rich guy street

[53:43]that was skyline drive okay if you went down skyline drive forget about it those houses were

[53:50]rich as hell the real posh people lived in skyline skyline court

[53:56]oh well it was confusing because the other side of town there was a water slide called skyline

[54:03]raceway and so sometimes people thought i lived at the water slide and they were very disappointed

[54:08]when they came over because it was one of those water slides where like when you got older and

[54:11]you went down it you're like oh this isn't safe like this was constructed in a time where water

[54:15]slides were not constructed safely the amount of water going down was too much the curves were too

[54:20]sharp you're going too fast we would just go and then stop in the middle of it we just put our hands

[54:25]up and stopped everybody smashed into us and we thought it was so funny i had not heard of elliot

[54:30]elliot smith here before we did the podcast but one person who did was beck he's a big fan of

[54:36]elliot smith they're kind of coming out at the same time right he actually covered after he

[54:40]passed away he covered this song alameda rob i think i gave it to you if you want to queue it up

[54:44]oh no i didn't know you sent me any email at all that's interesting that's an interesting fact to me

[54:50]did you put in the email russell i think all of

[54:55]rob's emails are from jennifer and start don't do not look at my email my email is a mess i

[55:02]book of the month i didn't do any of these songs russell we can skip them no no

[55:09]russell the alameda one absolutely not we're not skipping it we're editing it

[55:12]beck said uh needless to say he was one of the best songwriters of our day and a formidable musician

[57:16]he's talking about

[57:25]throwing candy out into the crowd on a parade have you guys ever been in a

[57:33]parade before

[57:33]yeah in my hometown for like the summer parade or whatever like but anybody could just back in

[57:42]the little league yes so my my neighbor growing up

[57:46]one of the complimentary movie guys dads he was the uncle sam in all the july 4th parades in like the

[57:52]apple valley area so he had the full stilts he had the full outfit yeah he had stilts that were like

[57:59]you know six eight feet high so he was doing the walking through wearing stilts as uncle sam and i

[58:04]bet he did it for 10 15 years did he have a big white beard oh yeah yeah they had the whole kid

[58:09]he was a full uncle sam looking motherfucker yes holy cow

[58:13]full uncle sam

[58:16]did you ever ask him to hold some elmers and then it's like you'd say like we want glue

[58:19]you know what i mean like do like we want we want if he was gonna have sex with somebody

[58:29]you think he'd say we want goo oh uncle sam you know he's pointing at like a naked woman

[58:34]we want goo what stop me guys please before i kill again you can just play another i'm giving

[58:39]you all the clues why won't you stop me oh i do i feel like a serial killer i'm not gonna stop you

[58:46]right into the police there were a next step just laid out right in front of you

[58:49]we want okay put your foot down right you're right let's go checks rhymes with

[58:54]goo what purple link behind the bar between the bars this was on goodwill hunting

[58:59]i don't remember this was during the fun this was during the funny part oh yeah

[59:07]was this on the list man of best soundtracks did we talk about this

[59:13]i think goodwill do it it was like 90 something

[59:16]i think this is when he's this is when he's hanging out with uh what's her name mindy yeah

[59:21]mini driver part of the movie that we didn't care about anytime many drivers there's like who cares

[59:26]we want to see this guy do math and like be smarter people don't give us this shit about

[59:30]does he have i think there was another one from i don't know if it was miss misery or whatever the

[59:35]other song name i don't think it was on the album but that's the one that won like best

[59:38]yeah best song or got one academy award we play that one yeah i was gonna ask you to play it

[59:42]let's see but first i want to show you this picture of the hulksters monster

[59:46]he played this at the academy awards he won like best original song or something and people were

[59:56]fucking sad in 1997 huh just everybody's just people are bummed out in the late 90s

[60:01]can you imagine like you just had bill clinton stuff going on and everybody's like boy this is

[60:08]as bad as it's gonna get can't get worse than this yeah geez the president is having sex in

[60:14]the office pictures of me now this one did remind me of now

[60:17]replacements guy listen up because to me this kind of sounded like the beatles

[60:21]like if you if i told you this is a beatles song wouldn't you kind of be like oh that makes sense

[60:27]to me you may or may not be surprised to learn that that is exactly what your wife at gmail.com

[60:32]said this morning oh yes we're a match made in heaven yeah you guys should hang out aaron i will

[60:38]take you up on that wife swap you keep bringing up and i edit out all the time that's okay but

[60:43]you know what it's gonna be a wife swap of the minds oh an intellectual mind swap yeah

[60:49]wife mind swap rob can you imagine you show up at a party you bring your little girls when they

[60:55]were kids and it's a it's a wife swap of the minds what a bummer i've got a box of condoms

[61:04]i'm like i don't even what are these for now how would that go over at cole's resort you try to

[61:08]hold that money i'm sure yeah hey hey i've got my kierkegaard

[61:13]yeah either either or you're gonna me or not like what's going on here oh this is a wife swap

[61:17]don't even get me started about moral relativism at a wife swap uh no name number five

[61:28]talking about biting his fingernails here you guys bite your fingernails i'm a big fingernail

[61:35]biter i'm not as bad as i used to be no that one gives me the creeps really yeah i don't mind if

[61:39]i don't have a problem but i couldn't chew on fingernails no

[61:43]i used to do it all the time i've stopped lately now i have to trim them which i'm very proud of

[61:47]myself for but great it's progress now i want to chew them just thinking about it you guys get

[61:53]grossed out watching other people chew nails or like you chewing your nails no me chewing my own

[61:57]i just couldn't do it how are you keeping your nails clean guys washing my hands washing my

[62:03]hands we already went over this rob that you don't like washing your hands a week that's not

[62:07]that's not what i said what i said was when you're digging around in there you don't have to

[62:13]i don't think you should have to after number one but i still do

[62:17]but you know it's like you don't have like dirt under nails i'll take a picture of like me holding

[62:23]i take more pictures of me holding cans of things than you would imagine in my life

[62:26]and my nails are always just dirty enough where i'm like i have to not show this nail like i

[62:32]don't know i need to get one of those like kits you know what i mean with various picks and stuff

[62:36]that i can put under there oh it sounds i'm more and more concerned with like ear and nose hair

[62:40]like what am i supposed to do i need one of those kits yeah it's happening you know what i mean

[62:43]we can't make this an old man podcast that's happening to me and i've got to deal with that

[62:48]aaron you want to see what happened to me look at this maybe you guys haven't noticed yet look

[62:52]at this disaster struck me thanksgiving break i decided to first of all i i trimmed my beard

[62:57]you're clean shaven yeah right and then i trimmed my mustache and it got too short

[63:01]and i looked like i looked like somebody michael jordan i look like somebody who you'd not want

[63:06]around your daughter i know it wasn't no it wasn't short like from the sides russell i did not have

[63:10]the michael jordan oh like too short here's like the length of the muscle

[63:13]well hold up rob you think the old mustache gave you a look that would want people around

[63:19]their daughter no yeah i was kind of like a time selling rob aaron's laughing way too hard at that

[63:26]don't you think yeah people constantly asking him like hey you should hang out with my daughter

[63:30]it made me that's a nice looking full mustache hey you sir with the mustache

[63:37]volleyball after after dinner like what are we talking about a lot why don't you come

[63:43]in daughter you're obviously a private eye detective when you're done with that why don't

[63:47]you uh come on over and hang out with my daughter my daughter out for a coffee no this was not a good

[63:53]somebody take my wife please this was a negative daughter mustache where i trimmed it not too short

[63:59]but too thin you know what i mean like it looked like it was just fuzz on there so i was like okay

[64:04]time to shave the mustache now i did like a matt dylan and something about mary kind of thing

[64:08]yeah exactly yeah i shaved it look at what i did to my face

[64:13]oh no he took a whole chunk out of there i was shaving the mustache for the first time in years

[64:20]i shaved it a piece of skin the size of my pinky nail which someone under there the size of my

[64:26]pinky nail just got shaved and as soon as i did i was like oh that's a bad cut and sure enough now

[64:32]i have a scab that's come in on my face where i didn't have a mustache before guys this is and

[64:38]now do you know what my face you know my number one facial feature is now that i've shaved my

[64:42]mustache eyebrows you know what my number one facial feature is now that i've shaved my mustache

[64:42]eyebrows bags under my eyes all the only thing that adds color to my eyebrows too and those

[64:48]eyebrows i think i do look younger though i look way younger yeah that's why maybe you will get a

[64:55]chance with somebody's daughter you you have a prominent forehead rob a prominent woman's head

[65:00]erin laughed at that one erin laughed at that one i gotta get this mustache back this is a disaster

[65:12]it's an absolute disaster oh and then guess what when i when i move my mouth now guess what happens

[65:18]to the scab it pulls off and it bleeds so i came back today from being in public for like three

[65:22]hours the whole thing was bloody i had no idea so i was walking around with a bloody face can't tell

[65:28]absolute disaster rose parade now listen this is the second song that this guy has

[65:40]about parades

[65:41]parades i was thinking we've got a parade ribbons already right yeah i'm not imagining we already

[65:45]had a throwing out candy thing oh and the weird thing is is that this music is like the opposite

[65:52]of music that you would think of with parades right if you went to a parade you heard this

[65:58]music you'd be like what is this yeah he's i mean this you can't hear this album but anything

[66:03]other than a cry for help now once you know yeah and it sounds like he's just really trying to

[66:08]paint that picture of a person who's like well i went to the parade because it's what people do

[66:11]and i don't know how to be a human and this is so sad if you went or you can think of it like this

[66:17]aaron what if you went to the parade and one of the floats was for euthanizing pets i think this

[66:22]would be a song that would be coming out of that float right like everybody else is like that

[66:26]and then the euthanizing pets float comes down and you're like yeah it's kind of a there's your

[66:32]parody song oh my god that'd be great but it made me think good thing i didn't invite aaron to my

[66:38]thanksgiving dinner this last week

[66:39]six and a half candidates okay i'm off to the parade i'm driving the euthanize your pets float

[66:46]see you guys later don't think about me but guys i thought to myself what is the best music for

[66:52]parades so i made a list parade list a parade list on the elliot smith episode now we're going

[66:58]to play a special game during this segment and this game is did rob make this list when he was

[67:03]high okay so by the end of this list you have to guess that if last night at about

[67:09]8 30 p.m when i made this list he told us that i super baked okay and did i go off into some weird

[67:16]places what was rob baked enough where he ignored my list in the gmail and made his own list yes

[67:23]i didn't ignore it i don't check my email i was gonna use your list but i got high i never check

[67:31]my email look at all these unopened emails my email i was gonna copy your youtube clips but i

[67:37]got high

[67:39]God i hope that's on the list that would be such a fun parody song to make

[67:44]number one best parade song i thought of it without even looking it up

[67:48]okay i got this top five list and i don't know 76 trombones when you think of a march

[67:56]this is what you think of from the music man with 110 cornets right behind you know this

[68:05]me took my place as the one and only baby

[68:09]you can talk yeah you can bicker you can talk you can bicker bicker bicker you can talk you can

[68:13]talk now listen you might the more you listen though the more you realize this march doesn't

[68:17]really sound like a good march okay and as somebody who's been researching a parade list

[68:22]for a long time okay i'll tell you what and that's because they're not it's it's like a it's it's for

[68:28]a musical it's a facsimile of a march it's not even a real march and we're going to get to what

[68:32]some real marches are but then i went to google and i typed in best parade music and you know

[68:36]the number one song to come up

[68:38]very moon

[68:39]already in the u.s sometimes it snows in april it's that google ai shit when google is giving

[68:46]me ai results it pisses me right off at those results do you guys know what i'm talking about

[68:51]is that the worst thing possible i hate it yeah look what google ai thinks is great parade music

[68:58]listen to this what the fuck are they talking about this is type in best parade music this

[69:06]is the number one song that goes on a parade i mean it's a great song

[69:09]i mean if i was on my euthanize your pets float and i was playing this i think it would be

[69:13]we haven't heard this on the list have we

[69:14]what is this on pets or not yeah this is on pets oh i i tricked myself into thinking yeah

[69:22]this song is so good now it is possible i didn't see the right version of the song

[69:26]instead they meant this this would be a better parade song

[69:31]okay now what i want to remind you we're playing the game it was rob high when he made this i mean

[69:36]yeah you're making those associations why your mind is another

[69:39]dimension so then i had to do some google foo i finally start typing in best parade march songs

[69:47]and i came up with this guy named now you may have never heard of this guy

[69:50]okay john phillips susan he made russell think about this 136 marches can you imagine what he

[69:58]was like at home where he's just like okay okay write this down

[70:02]like he'd just be making up marches can you imagine his 136th best march

[70:10]like what do you think that sounds like it's got to sound terrible right a bad march

[70:15]probably about as good as the bodyguard soundtrack

[70:17]101 john that would be a great soundtrack by the way if it was just john phillips susa

[70:25]you're matt damon this shit's easy for me i wish you could see what i could see i could see this

[70:29]this shit's easy for me and then all of a sudden just like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god

[70:32]what kind of accent was that i was gonna say that's a great accent you're listening to goodwill

[70:38]hunting is just this it would be a totally different movie the good one i think it's from

[70:43]austria by way of california good eye a lot of people think i'm really good at accents

[70:49]go to the shrimp on the bobby what i love is that when you look up why i gotta go see about a girl

[70:55]how do you like them apples this is semper fidelis this is a song

[71:02]john phillips susa wrote when he was listening to the marines singing at quantico and he started

[71:07]crying that's how every biography of a susan march goes is that he listens to something he cried and

[71:12]he wrote a march about it that's to me that's the third best march you can have at a parade

[71:17]okay number two this is a parade song now when you hear 76 trombones compared to this

[71:24]this is so much better listen to this this is the washington post march the jeff bezos march

[71:30]hey

[71:32]aaron yeah do you think the washington post march who did they say should be president this year

[71:38]uh they wouldn't they refuse to say they refuse to say just in case somebody got in charge that

[71:43]hurt one of their other businesses russell is this an all-time march to you pretty damn good

[71:49]march i mean this is when you hear this you know there's a parade going on first comment on youtube

[71:54]though this fucked my this fucked me up first comment believe it or not this played on iranian

[72:00]radio when the shower was in power

[72:02]and i loved it as a kid do you think john phillips souza wrote this march that's fast for it to be

[72:08]played in iran for the shah over the radio i don't think so guys this is the number two greatest

[72:16]parade music of all time and at number one okay john phillips souza led the marine band back to

[72:23]new heights of popularity during his 10 years leader from 1880 to 1892 was during this era

[72:27]he earned the title the march king now check this out stars in the air

[72:32]stripes forever this is the all-time best parade song ever right it feels like it's just on a loop

[72:40]for parades right like you just keep going and right just play it over and over now what i love

[72:46]about john phillips souza songs on youtube is check this out there's a guy who he runs the marine

[72:54]band and they play all of john phillips souza songs now they do not they play it sitting which

[73:01]is kind of sick

[73:02]like if you were in an auditorium listening to a bunch of marches i think you're i think it would

[73:05]blow your mind but watch this this guy comes out and explains beforehand john phillips souza led the

[73:12]marine band to new heights of popularity during his tenure as leader from 1880 to 1892 it was

[73:19]during this era that he earned the title the march king i mean he said some smart shit there that guy

[73:25]i i reckon this guy when uh leo had to pick out an instrument to play yes you know and so they're

[73:30]like okay well here's all the different instruments that he's going to play and he's going to play

[73:32]instruments you do for band this guy was explaining all the individual really instruments

[73:36]so i've got yeah but it was the uh the marine marching band that was they were the ones that

[73:42]were doing all the different instruments and matt and matt i agree that's a number one parade song

[73:46]guys what a great list i really like that that uh i've heard that song before it's got a great

[73:53]piccolo section yes completely into the comments 100 yeah yeah you saw the comments the comments

[74:00]on that video what do you mean no

[74:02]i didn't see any i just remembered the piccolo section was awesome the comments in that are so

[74:07]nasty they're like oh the piccolo section is actually in tune and the trombone can double

[74:11]tongue i'm like jesus christ there's some band people on youtube all right hey guys if you think

[74:17]i'm gonna edit that out russell what russell when are we doing your when are we doing your list

[74:20]what when are we supposed to be doing yours well i would have done it on that one because that was

[74:24]about the rose parade which is in portland and i was going to do a list about the best bands

[74:28]all right you know what there we go here we go guess what it's a list

[74:32]off okay now we're gonna play a game was russell high when he made his list let's see

[74:38]okay i may or may not have had a thc cocktail the other night which i've never really had before

[74:47]okay oh tasted terrible didn't russell uh it didn't taste wasn't a worry i think the problem

[74:54]is i probably shouldn't mix an espresso martini with a thc drink i think it's like it's it got

[75:00]my wires a little crumbed

[75:02]that is messed up russell that is like could you find your room i guess the question i could find

[75:08]my room all night but i okay um i was reading that uh the thc like for some people can cause

[75:15]like paranoia and stuff like that i don't think these are good things for me i think there's a

[75:20]brain a brain thing with me that is not good yeah but russell what if somebody is coming to get you

[75:25]okay and you don't realize it okay this is just informing yeah it could actually save your life

[75:31]yeah i don't know if i'm gonna be able to do that i don't know if i'm gonna be able to do that

[75:32]okay so think about that as you go to sleep tonight all right so we've talked before with

[75:36]sleeter kinney i believe is a portland-based band and aaron you you went to portland i believe you

[75:40]stayed in the roughest neck of town i did i stayed downtown they told me don't stay downtown and i

[75:45]stayed there yeah wow that's the night we recorded with replacements guy i was in portland you love

[75:49]portland so i figured we could honor some of the best bands ever from portland yeah um one of the

[75:54]ones we won't get to uh is it the kingsman i believe louis louis are they are from portland

[76:00]they're from portland which i thought was interesting but the fact that they're from portland

[76:02]first band on our list is paul revere and the raiders the song is

[76:06]formed in portland 1960 really yes i thought these were a british band yeah a hundred percent

[76:18]i thought these guys were british invasion for sure mark lindsey's voice on this is they were

[76:23]they were inducted into the oregon music hall of fame in 2007 the same year as elliot smith

[76:29]wow really wow interesting

[76:32]boy one of the bands next song on the list one of the bands that did play at that that that was

[76:38]the inaugural oregon music hall of fame 2007 another band that played at that is the band

[76:43]everclear oh santa monica or buy you a new life here we go this is who i would ask you could take

[76:50]get rid of goo goo dolls yes yes i like how this song was totally different than the other song

[76:56]father of mine when you play them back to back they definitely don't sound like the same song

[77:00]who cares if you land on a

[77:02]sound that's pleasing everclear is touring right now i think yeah bad air song when they're singing

[77:07]about the west hills that's in portland i believe so that's a little nod to portland right there from

[77:11]wow next band on the list this is one of matt's favorite this is kind of like an indie rock uh

[77:17]household name i think right matt that's modest mouse the song is float on oh yeah yep oh this is

[77:24]so good i believe they began in washington spent most of their time in portland and uh

[77:32]jeremiah green i was one of the i think the lead guy from modest mouse was really good friends with

[77:39]elliot smith and actually the guitar player for modest mouse jim fairchild was in elliot

[77:44]smith's touring band at one point so another portland connection there wow yeah they uh they

[77:51]they play that very uh they do not like playing it very much anymore but they know that they have

[77:56]to play right i mean yeah so they yeah so they kind of play a different version of it not a

[78:02]all out we're not gonna like end the show with it or start the show they just kind of play it because

[78:06]they know they have so you're a fan mad you go to a concert they don't play it what would they they

[78:10]opened up for i think weezer recently like in in at the armory i saw them recently i forget i think

[78:19]it was uh weezer so yeah so i have seen them but i like yeah i like their work they do good they do

[78:26]good stuff i just i think i love bands from portland i've loved all these so far check out the next one

[78:31]warhols the song is bohemia like you i wouldn't have guessed this is the dandy warhols

[78:37]fun song though why do you say that eric because i don't know that i know i know the name of the

[78:44]band the dandy warhols and i know this song but i wouldn't have named any single dandy warhol song

[78:49]i'm just saying i didn't know that was who did this song but i know the song rob weren't you

[78:53]talking about that elliot smith formed an indie rock band was a heatmeister what was the one you

[78:57]were talking about at the beginning yeah heatmeister and actually one of the people that they started

[79:01]playing with

[79:01]in school was a guy named eric hedford who was the drummer for the dandy warhols here

[79:07]so i thought that was interesting and another interesting thing the dandy warhols also had a

[79:13]song on the goodwill hunting soundtrack so there's obviously some link to portland yeah it's not your

[79:19]fault rob gus van zandt he's from portland i thought this was a pretty cool song too

[79:24]this is the kind of music i wish my kid would get into it we're like they're finding up-and-coming

[79:29]bands and going to see them when the tickets aren't a hundred bucks

[79:31]three hundred dollars at master square garden well if she was like if she was gonna get into

[79:37]new bands rob she might just learn some new slang and she'd be listening to the shins which is the

[79:43]last band on the list man where is garden state on that best soundtrack i didn't see it's got to

[79:51]be way up there it's one of the best this is on the garden state soundtrack that big part of the

[79:56]garden state soundtrack right rob so good that whole soundtrack is so good this is my

[80:01]pandora station right here this song comes up all the time this is what i love this is a song that i

[80:07]would love to ignore what i mean here's a very pleasant song that i could put you mean that in

[80:16]a good way yeah what the how can you mean that in a good way i'm just like i'm making a grilled

[80:21]cheese and this song is on it's fine background yeah wow wow wow front man james mercer uh new

[80:30]elliot smith or

[80:31]was kind of influenced him and at one point this is crazy he actually bought the southeastern

[80:37]portland house that elliot smith recorded roman candle in so this house he was living in when he

[80:43]recorded roman candle this guy the lead singer from the shins ended up buying it like 20 years

[80:49]later and didn't even know it kind of wild over 66 rob is number 66 above goodwill hunting which

[80:57]was at 77 feels like some influence there don't you

[81:01]think to some extent a little bit of a similar sound right a hundred percent oh russell that was

[81:07]a great list that's the list the top one list that's the top list those are some pretty good

[81:11]bands in portland right russell what if a band named themselves after a portland basketball player

[81:17]wouldn't that be crazy terry porters no the mookie mookie blakelock wasn't that what they're

[81:24]from the seattle sonics oh where it was the cliff the clifford robinson's movie

[81:31]moving on the greg odin's no yeah who is the guy okay guy from ohio state the brandon roy randy

[81:40]foy trade oh i just say this right now russell i apologize for not reaching out to see if you're

[81:46]doing a list because your list beat my list ass okay i marched i marched all over your list oh my

[81:52]god you got a bunch of good lists i'll never i'll never go list to list against russell again that

[82:00]was crazy i i got an i got a list now okay my list top groups from portland maine

[90:19]listen this is the popular and patented

[90:19]listen this is the popular and patented uh rating system we've already talked

[90:21]uh rating system we've already talked about it okay is this album

[90:24]about it okay is this album

[90:24]about it okay is this album at 216 on the list is this perfect

[90:28]at 216 on the list is this perfect

[90:28]at 216 on the list is this perfect yeah it's kind of lo-fi yeah it's sad

[90:31]yeah it's kind of lo-fi yeah it's sad

[90:31]yeah it's kind of lo-fi yeah it's sad but guess what it was in goodwill

[90:32]but guess what it was in goodwill

[90:32]but guess what it was in goodwill hunting

[90:33]hunting

[90:33]hunting a movie that literally everyone in the

[90:35]a movie that literally everyone in the

[90:35]a movie that literally everyone in the united states can quote

[90:37]united states can quote

[90:37]united states can quote okay if you are over 40 35 if you're

[90:40]okay if you are over 40 35 if you're

[90:40]okay if you are over 40 35 if you're over 35 you know goodwill hunting

[90:42]guaranteed it's it's it's like a cultural thing it's like it's like not knowing what the it's

[90:46]time to play the game guy is on tiktok now you have to know this stuff time to play the game

[90:52]triple h the russell this is where you gotta be her selmsley this is see but there's a guy who

[90:58]sings it on tiktok so you got to get into the meta now you got to get on tiktok you got to spend three

[91:02]to four hours a day on there like i am over the thanksgiving break here it's kind of rotting my

[91:06]brain away uh listen is this a rolling well toned this is perfect at 217 okay this is right where it

[91:13]belongs is this a rolling boned it should have been higher up on the list okay this is one of

[91:18]the greatest movie soundtracks of all time i would say if we were going to make a list it should be

[91:22]higher on the list that would be a rolling boned or is this a rolling grown should be lower on the

[91:28]list not this high matt what do you think rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling grown excuse me

[91:34]uh i just it i'm

[91:36]failing to hear how this is like different or new or you know like inspiring to other artists it

[91:43]just it feels like every college album that came out of the 1990s i guess somebody who had a little

[91:51]bit of a some college angst i guess so i it's it's not for me i don't know i i would listen

[91:57]to it again i'm thinking with aaron where i like to have it on the background and forget about it

[92:02]if you will because it's just good music to have out of the background but

[92:06]do i think that belongs up here no i don't i don't understand why it's up here so i think it's rolling

[92:10]boned no rolling grown rolling grown be way down on the list higher just uh now you know

[92:21]man here's the thing right is yeah this is not a college vibe album right if you had this album

[92:28]but you've got some knives you've got a knife you've got a knife to cut some cake in the room

[92:34]your college vibes are very different i think

[92:36]i think that our college vibes we've disagreed on every college vibe album in the last like 10

[92:41]weeks now this is literally on uh goodwill hunting where he's dating a college student

[92:47]and you know that's the whole thing i mostly watch the math parts i'm not gonna lie other fun

[92:53]so i don't know i don't get it i mean there's i mean we're gonna hear so many more out

[93:01]it's the fact that uh like 16 stones by bush this is kind of the same era

[93:06]oh yeah it's not on and this one is like i don't get it so i'm gonna say it's rolling

[93:11]grown yes no yes rolling grown man this is so simple my my way we rank albums uh russell

[93:19]what do you think rolling well toned russell who's currently fixing the headlight on his car

[93:23]russell rolling well toned rolling boner rolling grown what do you think i'm gonna go a similar

[93:29]route to man to me this is perfectly pleasant music i could have this on i could you know be

[93:34]making dinner making dinner i could be making dinner i could be making dinner making dinner

[93:36]making brunch put it on the car plenty of places you can listen to this making espresso martini

[93:41]plenty of things to listen to this music it's very pleasant it's enjoyable i think it's well

[93:46]done but we're talking about the 500 greatest albums ever like some at some point you've got

[93:52]to have something that blows me away you have to have something that's so unique and new you have

[93:56]to have an amazing singer some amazing musicianship something that something has to knock your socks

[94:02]off and i didn't get blown away by any aspect of the album so why don't we get started

[94:06]while i like it i enjoy it i think it has a place and should be enjoyed by a lot of people and i'd

[94:11]probably even recommend people listen to it it didn't blow me away to me that means i don't think

[94:16]it should be this high on the list so i'm gonna say rolling grown similar to matt aaron what do

[94:20]you think rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling grown 1997s either or and disagree with

[94:25]these guys i can't say it any better i think it's a fun album maybe fun's the wrong word it's nice

[94:30]to listen to i like it maybe i didn't give it the right chance there's probably some stuff in the

[94:36]album but it it just uh and i'll listen to it again but i can't say it belongs where it is it's

[94:41]just not blowing me away so i'm going to give it a rolling grown is it possible that rolling stone

[94:47]included this person on the list because it makes them look smart music wise of course okay there we

[94:53]are and that's why i think it should be on the list because i'm also smart music wise a lot of

[94:57]people are saying that i'm a real albert einstein this gets a rolling unfortunately you guys are

[95:02]incorrect okay this gets a rolling despondency

[95:06]despondent despondent despondent this is an album to listen to when you're sad and you want to hear

[95:12]someone else who's sad but not enough where you want to actually listen to their problems god i

[95:16]don't care what bill said oscar at work shut up oh god i shouldn't have said shut up i didn't mean to

[95:21]say shut up okay i was talking i was talking to the video game what you meant to say was relax

[95:29]oh yeah relax that's always a good choice huh you're just like your mother all right

[95:36]all right next up next up which would be great is there we're talking about bernie okay

[95:43]person to be like okay who's gonna listen to this episode my wife or my mother-in-law i wish she was

[95:50]like my mother-in-law next up this album was just russell what was the title of the album we just

[95:58]did either or the next one is called definitely maybe this is getting weird i don't know we're in

[96:05]the middle of a rolling stone list writer bit it's a dumb shit bit it's the only reason these

[96:11]two are next to each other is because the song the type the album titles are the same

[96:14]and i know waffling guys this is a dumb bit and i and i would know

[96:20]i just did a bit earlier about parade songs

[96:26]i know a bit when i see it oh no yeah you can't cut it no i feel like you brought it up again

[96:35]it's not getting cut i didn't say that i think there's more meat on the bone about a guy who

[96:40]writes parades what his life is like did it better i want this part to go

[96:45]why would i try the bit again you know it's not gonna work why don't you just play you should play

[96:52]like eight uh different marching band songs to end this episode so it lasts another 45 minutes

[96:59]to see who gets to the end we cannot get copyright strict because of marching bands

[97:03]oh that's true we cannot although i would like to hear his worst

[97:05]march you know what i mean what is john you know what i thought it was 136 we already talked about

[97:11]it right suza's worst march like do you think there's one where it's like tired and sleepy

[97:15]your opinion what's the worst what's the worst suza march that'd be the band reddit episode

[97:21]as a horn player as a horn player wow okay you know what they're saying king cotton now this

[97:29]doesn't sound like it's gonna cause trouble i think this is fine oh look there's an animated

[97:34]video that goes along with it

[97:35]all right

[97:36]do you guys see why this didn't make the list seems as good as the other 135 right to me right

[97:48]no the first two comments oh this is how it's supposed to sound

[97:54]and my favorite suza well that's dumb that person this is the worst suza march a lot of people don't

[97:59]realize that you think john phillips suza was a serial murderer that's why we know all three of

[98:03]his names oh well i don't know i don't know i don't know

[98:05]it's time to say um goodbye i have to say if i wrote a song while watching zine of warrior

[98:16]princess with a sound off there'd be a lot more verses about trying to jack off real fast

[98:21]oh no hercules is on oh or no uh oh my god in sorbo yeah it's renegade i made it all the way

[98:34]to renegade damn it

[98:35]russell renegade is kind of the poor man's sons of anarchy if you think about it
