The Slits: Cut (1979)
[0:00]In 2020, four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums decided by Rolling Stone magazine. This resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music, excoriated the order, and led us to making this podcast. We are far from experts, so we promise to do almost no research. All opinions are our own, unless you disagree. Please sit back and enjoy. Beck did it better. We are all the way up to album 260, and from 1979, by the way, I think you do have to keep that in mind. Let's see this album. From 1979, we have The Slits. I just don't feel comfortable saying that name so many times. The Slits with Cut. Listen we need to announce, okay, listen, here's the bottom line. We need to announce that this album has three topless women covered in mud on the cover. Or as Aaron calls it, oh, what I'm doing with all my neighbors next Sunday. Guys, they're going to a California mud bath. Doesn't that sound like something Aaron would do? I mean, I've been to a mud bath, actually. There we go. Dr. Shin. What's that place called? Oh, I've been to mud baths. Dr. Shit? I would not go to a mud bath that's called Dr. Shit. Aaron, that wasn't mud.
[1:00]No. That wasn't mud, Aaron. Yeah, no, I once crashed a ladies weekend in Calistoga, and it was called. Aaron, were you hanging with Dr. Shit, and he wanted you to hide out at the bottom of porta-potties, and you crashed a ladies weekend? Were you one of those guys? Oh, but you know what happened? I couldn't do the mud bath. Now I remember. I couldn't do the mud bath because I had knee surgery, so I couldn't get my incision in the mud. So I couldn't do the mud. But I did the hot springs. What the hell's the name of that place? Russell, you should go next time you're in Napa. It's Dr. Something. I'm going to stop shouting. I know. I'm sorry. I'm not. I don't need to shout. Dr. Wilkinson's. You're not really sorry. Don't lie. I'm done shouting. Don't tell her you're sorry. You're not sorry. People in Rob's house walk around with the craziest get-ups on at midnight. Rob, tell her to just fuck off. Yeah. Fuck off. Guys. Kitty what? Being hit by your wife with your kid looking at you and laughing is one of the most humiliating things.
[2:00]Look at her and act like she's a public safety officer and just wave your hand at her. Like, just walk away. Just give her one of these. Just have one of these. Tell her she's being disrespectful right now. Guys, I've always thought about talking quieter on the podcast. That's actually a decision that I've made myself. Okay? And Aaron, I'm just going to say this. If you went with Dr. Shit, I have to whisper this because my kid is outside, too. And it was a guy who wants you to hang out in the bar. I'm a port-a-potty to spy on people. You know I'm going to talk about that for an episode. You know I would talk about that again. It's Dr. Wilkinson's backyard resort in Mineral Springs. And I highly recommend. That sounds like what a serial killer would run. That sounds like it. I mean, that's probably true. Listen. Okay? I don't have any parody song. Big surprise. Okay? Couldn't quite figure it out. Although, I will say, I thought about doing one to the... Did you guys listen to their cover of... I heard it through Grapevine. Yeah, that was kind of fun.
[3:00]That was kind of fun. Yeah, that was pretty fun. Not on this album, officially. Bonus track. So we're not going to hear it on this episode. But I highly recommend it. What? I listened all the way to the bonus tracks? Shit. Yeah. That's what you did. I should have been paying more attention. Rob, your fade is so... I just realized I've been watching on the wrong camera setting. And now I can see your face up close. Your fade is so tight. Yeah. God damn. Well, I had to do work on Friday. I had last Friday off because I had to write all these comments. And it takes forever. And so Friday, I was like, I got to clean this closet. You know what I mean? And then I was like, all these cords by my computer. They've been bugging me for years. I better clean those. And I was like, I better schedule a haircut. Like, whatever I could do to not do work. Nothing in my life has changed. I tell the kids at school all the time, hey, you got to get started. Just do it. Don't take any of my advice. Props to you for writing them yourself, though, and not having AI do it. We're at like seven minutes, Rob. No, I... This is my fault. Excuse me. I... I'm indulging him.
[4:00]I talk to text, and then I run it through AI. So, sorry. Sorry, parents. You're just getting my voice. Listen. Sorry, climate. We are all the way up to album 260. Sorry, future generations. We're up to album 260. Well, guess what? Kids are mean to me now. They stole my headphones, so... They deserve this burnt-out husk of a planet. We're going to leave them. I've got three guys here who thought this band proved the dual nature of life. Light being both photons with discrete energy levels and wave of energy at the same time. But, guys, that's the double-slit experiment. Okay? Of course. You made that mistake. Look it up. I've got Matt in Minneapolis. Matt, how are you doing? Good, Rob. Typical girls are so confusing. I've got a good question for that one. I've got Russell in Minneapolis who has gotten up and walked away from the podcast right after reminding me of the timer. So, I'm getting... I feel like I'm getting mixed messages. I feel like I'm getting mixed messages here. Russell in Minneapolis, how are you doing?
[5:00]One second. We're on a timer, Russell. I know. Don't say that, guys. This counts, too. It stresses out the listeners, too. I'm sure the listeners get stressed out by the timer, just like some other people do. Rob, tee me up again. Rob, there are so many people walking around your house. It's midnight. Russell in Minneapolis, how are you doing? Rob, our frequent mutilation transmits over the air, serving the purpose of the dumb shit listeners of those who want to hear. Not me. I'm uncircumcised. And I've got Aaron. I've got Aaron out in California now. Aaron. Aaron. I was telling Aaron earlier. I said, I'm not on the... I just found out the FBI called me, and they told me I was on a list that had just come out. And I was like, what the fuck? You made a list. I said, I was worried. I was on the... They said, no, you're not on the Epstein list. You're on the wet stain list. You're on the... Wet stain list? Yeah. You were seated at the airport with wet stains on your pants. So, you're on a... Wet stain list. You were stealing a bag of barbecue chips. Aaron in California. California, how are you doing? I wish I had some lyrics for this one, but I don't.
[6:00]And I don't know how I feel about talking about the band name, but let's go. Let's do it. Rob, do you have a tattoo on your forearm? They talk about Babylon a little bit, which is not fair. Oh, that's fun. I would never get a tattoo on my forearm. That's for fucking losers. Now... Well, yeah, that's the reggae influence. They're always talking about Babylon down there. Well, let's get into the voicemail. That brings me to the heart of Babylon. See? Do you... Let me ask you this about this album. Are the accents offensive? On the back line. Should I be hearing the voicemail? 802-277-BEC. That's 802-277-2325. Did you hear the theme song there? Oh, yeah. Okay. Hey, fellas. Long-time listener. First-time caller. Just been a pleasure to listen to you guys and be with you throughout this journey, throughout the years. It's a pleasure. And because I'm a man of principle, I will be with you till the end. Can't wait for 500. My reason for the call tonight is twofold.
[7:00]Number one, had an opportunity to attend a live music event with our good friend, Jill, from East St. Paul. Yes. Matt, we missed you. Matt was a last minute he pulled out, which is something we've never been able to do. Oh, my God. This is an old-timer. Can I just say this? Talking about ejaculating to his wife, that has no place on this podcast. You know what I mean? Let him go. Let him cook. This is a masterful voicemail. I don't want to sound like a Bethel guy, but that's... Medallion Entertainment Center, west on Minnesota State Highway 55, off of 494. Hit the music, Rob. That's bad. I'll turn it up loud. Oh, fuck. Well, see, now I... Okay, wait a minute. I can do this. I can save this. Hey, fellas. Shit. I attend a live music event with our... Matt was a last minute he pulled out, which is something we've never been able to do. Which is something I've never been able to do. Here I go.
[8:00]We saw Blackhawk at the Medallion Entertainment Center. It's a perfect joke. West on Minnesota State Highway 55. And he does this. Off of 494. That's a good bit. But a couple things. Number one, the cover band, or the first band, the opening band, played a bunch of covers. It happened to be the week of the Dolly Parton release, which was awesome, because we heard Jolene eastbound and down. And also a great fiddle player. And with a great fiddle player, you have to play Devil Went Down to Georgia. And they had a great rendition of that as well. So my first question is, when it comes to an opening band, what do you want to hear? Do you want to hear the covers, or do you want to hear original music by that cover band? What's your style there? Okay, what do we think, guys? I'll tell you right now, opening band, give me those covers. I don't want to hear their real music. I want to hear some covers. If I don't know any of your original songs, give me some covers, right? I want to hear the band that has two. So then you can kind of go get a beer.
[9:00]You don't really have to listen to them. You can talk with your friends. You can come and go. You can go use the bathroom. You don't have to worry about it. Your goal is to not miss the two songs. Like when we heard Blind Melon opening for OAR at the Red Rocks, that was, for me, a perfect opening band. There was a few songs I knew and wanted to hear, but I didn't really give two shits if I missed the rest of it. So I'm going with the band that's got two hits as my opener. Aaron, what about you? What do you think? I like what Russell has to say. You want to hear the one? That's building up to the one song you want to hear. But I do, from any band, I want to hear a cover. I saw a show last week, and the guy, it was Dijon, who was fantastic, awesome show, but he didn't play any covers, and that was my only beef was, I do want to hear one cover from every band, because I want to hear who they would listen to. Matt, what do you think? What do you want out of an opening band? If I'm there for the opening band, I do want to hear their best five, six, seven, eight songs, whatever they've got. Come, I used to want to hear a cover, but every time somebody comes to Minneapolis,
[10:00]They play Purple Rain now, or some Prince song, and so it's like, that's kind of, we're past that at this point, so play some other cover of something else. And there's other Minnesota songs. Biggest ball twine in Minnesota. What other Minnesota songs do we have? Husker Du has some songs, right? I don't know the names of any of them. Runaway Train? There you go. Play some fucking Runaway Train. Love that band. I love that video, by the way. All-time bummer video. Funky Town by Lips Incorporated? Oh, Aaron, that's a good one. Janet Jackson? It's actually Funky Town. There you go. That would be a deep cut. All right, let's get back to this. This is mid-condition. Oof. And ultimately, we got there to see Blackhawk, but in the intermission, they had a live auction and a 50-50 raffle. So, thoughts on that? Oh my God, what is this place? Raffles and 50-50 auctions in the middle of a concert. In a show? I thought it was weird, but great. I saw Blackhawk. They played all of it.
[11:00]Okay, let me ask you guys this. 50-50 raffle at a concert. It is bizarre. I'm not sure, Darren, or I'm not sure this guy went where he thinks he went. It depends on who does the money go to. Is it going to the band? Is this another way to pay for... How much are you spending at a 50-50 raffle? I'm not doing it. I never do. What's the 50-50 part mean? You get... So, go ahead, man. Somebody wins. It's like... You know, they pull a ticket out of the bucket, right? And whatever the pot is, so if they collect it a thousand bucks, you get 500, and then Whoever else sometimes it's a charity or something like... Sometimes it goes to, like, the band or the venue or something like that as well. They do them at, like, a twin... The twins do them all the time. Like, every day... Twins do them all the time. Yeah, but it's always for a... Sporting events do it, yeah. But it's always for a charity, right? Somebody's running it there. The Little Sisters of the Poor are running the 50-50 raffle today kind of a thing, and I kind of like it. Why not add a little more fun to the concert?
[12:00]Yeah. You know what? If people don't want to do the 50-50 raffle, you just don't have to play, right? You don't have to do it. Yeah. 50-50 raffle. Aaron's like, that's not even old enough for me to go to that birthday party. The hits from 20 years ago, sing-alongs, bangers. 50-50. I had a great night. So, just really had an opportunity... Russ, you had an opportunity to join us. Oh! My final question is, can you please rank the... The following three regrets in order? All right. I'll put them in random order, just chronologically. Number one, Carrot Cake Gate. Number two, Apple Cider Vinegar Tone. Wow. And number three, missing out on a great night of live music with some quality people. Wow. Guys, it's been a pleasure. Talk to you soon. Wow. It's his pleasure. Wow. Truly a pleasure. He knows pleasure, as we discussed. Now, Russell, you are catching some strays on the two voicemails we've played tonight, for sure. But I do have to ask you, what do you think? I do have to ask, what is your greatest regret? Is it when you had a bad tone about the apple cider vinegar, okay, which turned out to be
[13:00]No big deal? Is it when you ate the leftover carrot cake out of the fridge, infuriating your upstairs roommate? Or is it when you missed out on this night of live music because of some reason? What do you think, Russell? I don't regret the carrot cake. I would eat it again. And if people don't like it, then they should have ordered another piece of carrot cake, I guess. I mean, I'm eating the carrot cake. Wow. I mean, Russell, that is so ballsy to say. I love it. And part of the reason I entrenched in that belief now is the upstairs roommate did listen To the other day when we talked about how she stole my ice cream that night. And I said, what would happen, do you think, if I would have eaten that ice cream? And it was the one you picked out. Would that have gone well? She goes, oh, no. And so I said, well, I probably handled that maybe more appropriately than you may have handled it if you were on the other foot. She agreed. Oh, wow. Wow. See, I wonder if I'd be having conversations like this with my wife if I wasn't constantly
[14:00]Wearing noise-canceling headphones around the house. Having conversations at all. Okay. Something to think about. But I don't regret it because that night I was also, I don't know if I told you this, I don't know if we talked about it. I was seeing Purple Rain. I saw the Purple Rain show at the Orpheum. Wow. So I regret not being able to see the pleasure principal pull out that night like he was talking about. But I was having a great night of music anyway. So I'm glad those guys had fun. You know the pleasure principal is pulling up to that concert in just one of those, the biggest minivan. He's pulling up in a Suburban, right? He's pulling up in a huge, like a huge, well, I know what his job is. So it's probably an Escalade. I don't know if he was wearing a cowboy hat. It didn't look like it in the pictures. That's true. You're right. He's owned cowboy hats in his lifetime. And why was he not wearing it in the pictures that we saw? Wow. Russell, you're too busy. You can't have regrets. You're just going around.
[15:00]You're doing all this different stuff. Tell us about the Prince show. What was that? Oh, it was the Prince, the pre-Broadway show, the Prince musical, Purple Rain. They did all the famous songs from the movie, but they threw in a lot of other Prince songs, a lot of more Stay in the Time songs. So it was a good show. We may have had an upstairs roommate that had a run in with some of the people at the show, and it got a little intense for a minute. But we got through it, and we enjoyed the rest of the show. And we had a good time. It got a little bit weird at the end. The second half of the show had some stuff that I think they could have just cut out, and I don't really know what the purpose was. But I really enjoyed it. If people are hearing this and it's still playing for another few weeks, I would say go check it out. I've just, as an anecdote, I know somebody who's working on the set for it, and then I also know somebody who's a producer for it, which means they gave a lot of money to be an executive producer. So to be part of it. And so I don't want to speak too bad of it, but it is getting roundly like shit on, if
[16:00]You will. Like it needs to be rewritten kind of a thing if it's going to make it anywhere close to being on Broadway and stuff like that. Because I think of some of the stuff you just said, it just gets a little weird at play. I haven't seen it, so I can't comment, but I think it needs to go. I think they're going to be, I think when you see it again, I think it'll be rewritten and it'll be a little different is what I'm hearing. Just as a thing. Well, it could be, but I will say it's, it's the closest thing I will ever, I was thinking Of Aaron when I was there because it's the closest I will ever be to seeing Prince. Like, cause even if you were to say like, you don't like the show, it's still like a good Prince imitation show or whatever you like at the very worst. The music pieces were enjoyable. Yeah. And so the music is fun. Like people were into the music. People were having fun. I, there are parts of the story and some of the scenes and stuff you're like, I don't really understand what this is, but yeah, I, I thought it was super fun. We were into it.
[17:00]The music was super fun. I liked it. I have an admission to make. Okay. And I know what Russell's thinking. Oh, to a show you're going to get in a ticket. No, Russell, a different kind of admission. I am the executive producer friend that man knows. And part of the problem is I did demand a 10 minute scene about masturbating with a magazine. So what? That's on me. You really thought it was going to work out. Yeah. Rob, my question is, is can you get a section 181 deduction? For the videos that you film? Because if you're, if you are, I've got some, I've got some passive income to Shelter. Oh, put that in Delaware. The idea. You think I could keep track of any sort of deductions? I don't even understand what that means. Aaron rolling going. How's it going with you? It's going okay. I, I'm starting to be concerned guys that, Nuts duction. Wow. Thank you. Beautiful. Thank you. Put that on my IRS form. Yeah. There's like a few things I'm worried about, in life right now. One is like how many takeout sauces can you keep in your refrigerator before
[18:00]You've you should have used. Guess what? You know what I mean? Infinite Aaron. What if you need that red sauce? What is it? Nobody knows it's in there though. Keep it in there. All right. Appreciate that. Thank you. I'm concerned a little bit that this, magazine publication after which we've, named our quest is, maybe dying. So when, I think we talked about D'Angelo passing away and I was sad about that. And I waited many days to hear what Questlove had to say about it. I was very worried about Questlove because I know that he and D'Angelo were close. So I was waiting to hear Questlove's thoughts on it. And then he finally, wrote something in Rolling Stone and then he, he essentially, I didn't, I didn't quite understand until I read this in the digital version, but, he essentially read aloud, kind of did like a performance piece of his, sort of eulogy for D'Angelo on his social media, which was beautiful and wonderful. But I thought to myself
[19:00]Digital media goes away, right? Like we don't know how long this piece is going to stay on rolling stone.com. So I want to buy a physical copy of the magazine Rolling Stone that has this article in it so that I can have Questlove wrote about it. You guys, I can't, I can't goddamn find a Rolling Stone magazine anywhere. I drove around to like four stores one day. Like I went to like three different grocery stores. I went to Safeway. I went to the little corner shop by down the street for me. I was like late for a meeting because I was out trying to find a copy of Rolling Stone. Guess print media is fucked. I don't know if you knew this. Do they have the whole Coke and real American story magazine or not? I don't know. I should what's fucked. I bet you could have found a Taylor Swift fan magazine and those things are like 20 bucks each. I bet you could have find that more easily than Rolling Stone. Yeah, I did the only copy of Rolling Stone that I found was at Safeway. And it was a Bruce Springsteen special issue sent to me. So now I don't even know if what Questlove wrote made it into any print copies of this,
[20:00]But I tried man. And there's just not a lot of print media out there. Can I just say this, Aaron, you've told a lot of pathetic stories on this podcast. That might be the most pathetic story I've ever heard in my life. You driving around to various grocery stores. Can you imagine working at a grocery store and somebody walks in and goes right to the magazine section? You'd be like, this guy's fucked in the head. Call security right now. I also, well, the other thing I went to it. Yeah. Even worse, I went to a bookstore. So you're like looking by the cash registers. You're not even going to the store. You're just looking by the cash register. But this was after people went to the bookstore and the bookstore didn't have, it was an independent bookstore. So they didn't have Rolling Stone. They only had, cause like Barnes and Noble was like too far for me to get there and then make it back in time for work. And I went to the bookstore and they only had like independent zines or whatever. So then, but I'm in the bookstore and this bookstore once burned down and now they have a new location. So I can't go in there. We're not buying a book. So I go in, I buy two books and then embarrassingly,
[21:00]I go to the counter and say like, well, also I was kind of hoping if you had rolling stone and the guy's like, no, we don't keep that one. So now I've got, I got these two new books. Bring one of them home. While it tells me he doesn't like it. Now I'm stuck with a book that he doesn't want. I still don't have Rolling Stone magazine. It's tough guys. Like this is what has happened to us since we started this quest. Wow. And that book he didn't like it was the Bible. Wow. That's crazy. It was a graphic novel about, no, I thought it was going to be cool as a graphic novel about a Boba cafe in the City that has like a magic cat, but it turns out he'd already read it on his iPad. So he didn't want it. Can I bring up one thing about the digital media again? Yeah, I'm telling you, go ahead and let's hear about the Bible. So every once in a while I drop the kids off at a karate and then I got like a half hour to myself. So either go to turnstile, the store, not the, not your band, Rosie which has been, go around and look at random stuff where there's a Goodwill arc value village, a couple of blocks away to go to that one. Now you're talking my language.
[22:00]And so I went there and I'm just perusing cause sometimes they get records. So go by the bookstore and I had to stop and think for just a little while about if this was funny or not, or if it's a comment to myself, but they had a copy of the Bible in the nonfiction section and I had to think about it for a second. Oh wait. Yeah. Just like where does the Bible go? In the sections of the arc Valley village. It feels like if you went and said that to a book, to a person who worked there, They'd just be like, what the fuck? I come on, man, I don't want to deal with this shit. You know, we're closing in like two weeks. We're fucked. You know what I mean? Like do not pick this up right now. All right, well that's my rolling going. How's it rolling going with Matt? Well I haven't, Rob, I want you to play one song and I think you should just add this to your list. And I thought about this last week when we were talking, but, it's called let things go by, Camp. C A M P. We've done one of their songs before. Wow.
[23:00]Yeah. Great band. Just a great, but just listen to this. Lots of A's. Put this on in the background every once in a while when you're walking your dog. Cause I think about this song more than again, kind of like the Bible. Think about the song just a little bit more than I should every once in a while. So I don't have a really good rolling going this week because I really haven't done anything over the last week because I've been sick if you will. But I thought I've, I'm going to do a little bit of a, I'm going to do a little bit of a, I'm going to do a little bit of a, I'm going to do a little bit of a, I'm going to do a little bit of a, I'm going to do a little bit of a, Crazy hours of doing nothing. Hey man, is it the news? No. I thought we were doing it right. So all of a sudden you're flipping through And then we were at, I was thinking I was in prime And it like goes to like the next show. So I was just watching all these random documentaries And I think it was on some way. Hey, Dan, you were sick. Yeah, I was sick. And then it came up like, what did it call, What did they call it? Swingers Clubs in England.
[24:00]Okay, I'm listening. I looked at the thing and I said, Apparently there's like 2,400 swingers clubs. Is the song playing? I just want to make sure. Yeah, sounds nice. It kind of sounds like Iron New Wine a little bit. Yes. It's a good one. Salting. Really? I like Iron New Wine. Oh, you're such a nerve. Oh, I'm sorry, man. His voice is similar to me. Yeah. So I just let it play. I'm like, what the fuck is this? Let's just see what a swingers club in England is. All right. Very nice old gentleman. He's probably 80 years old. Has been running it for 45 years. It's the longest running. Swingers Clubs has got all this stuff. It is the most pathetic place that you could ever Think about going and like sad and like, You know, it's like set up rooms That are like very cheap furniture And they got two staff ladies Who like do all the stuff and all this, But it's trying to bring people who want, You know, you sign up to be a swinger And so you come to like the Valentine's Day
[25:00]Swinging event or whatever. And I just, like I almost had to shut up. I felt so bad for everybody Who was just trying to get into the life Or whatever kind of a thing. And it was the most awkward thing in the world, the most. So I don't know, how does anybody get into swinging? Just, can I just say this right now? I just want to say this. You're having sex with somebody. Somebody's sitting next to the bed and watching you. That's it. I'm just going to say that. I mean, that's kind of what it was Because people like want to join in, But they don't want to like just jump. It was just, it was. Can you imagine? Here I am, pounding away. You know, listen, this woman gave birth to my two kids. She's the love of my life. And I'm pounding away. And some guy is taking his penis And trying to put it in her mouth at the same time. Excuse me, sir. We're having a moment in the medical exam room. You know what I mean? They have theme rooms. We're like. Well, I think there's a difference Between swingers and orgies, right? There's at least feel like separate groups. But I don't, I don't think so. This feels like I better do some investigation on Bing.
[26:00]I don't know. It's like the same thing with an orgy. Like how do you go to an orgy? Never been to one to have no plans to go to one. All my socks match. I got all my socks when I go home every night. You know, how do you get involved with one? Is it something you have to be invited to? Like, hey, you want to come join my orgy? I think so. Cause if we've been alive long enough, We'd be at a spontaneous orgy if it ever happened, right? I think it's something where everybody's like, Hey, after this, we're doing an orgy. Just remember, right? You know what I mean? I'm using the bathroom now. Cause in 50 minutes, it's orgy time. So let's just Wait, are you, I think there's gotta be a shower involved Depending on what's going on in the bathroom. I'm showering. It's not good. I probably would shower before an orgy. If it's like, I drank a lot of milk. Now I gotta go to the bathroom. Then there's gotta be a shower. I think you should shower before an orgy. If you're in orgy and you see some guy Just pound and milk in the corner. You're like, I, I don't think it should be Cause it should be like the public pool. It's like, oh, you got to shower Before entering the thing. And then like no one actually does it
[27:00]But like it's everyone should. And so like this document didn't like show much, You know, you could like see, oh, there's a, The backside of a naked person walking in that way Kind of a thing, right? And so it was just more of like the people Trying to like get comfortable with each other. And like, I don't know, it was just rolling, Going to the Russell. How's it going with you? Rolling going. I had a bar pet bartender pet peeve to share With you guys quick and see what you think of this. Wow. Okay. This is my airing of the grievances. And I was going to air a bunch of grievances With you guys, But I realized the other night When I was writing them in my notepad, I may have gotten, had too many drinks And didn't save those notes. So the only one I can remember, I don't like being at a bar Where they do fancy bartenders Or like they're doing fancy drinks. I don't like my bartender doing the straw in the drink, Tapping it and then taking it out And then taking the sip of the drink To see if it tastes well. I know they're not tasting the drink. I know they're not like putting their mouth on the cup.
[28:00]I know they're just touching the straw. I don't like the bartender holding up the straw And tapping the little, Like the little droplet of the drink Because they got to make sure it's pristine and perfect. What do you guys think of those arrogant bartenders? I don't know if I've been to a place that's done that. Do you see it happen once in a while? Rob, did you ever do that? Yeah. The place in Paris, This bartender did it multiple times While making the drink. And at first I was kind of like, Oh, they're really like dialing this in. They've got it. And then after a while I was like, What is going on here? Why are they taking so many steps? That's just a bartender trying to have some drinks. Because have you ever seen, Have you ever seen a bartender do that And then adjust the drink? No. No, but they do my line not their head, right? If they know you're looking, They will kind of give a thoughtful. It's like when the school photographer Comes in my classroom, I always do the like looking over the shoulder And pointing at something for the students. Like something I've never, ever do teaching. But if I think I'm going to be like In the school's email to the parents And I was like, yes. Because one time someone should do that And then say like, oh, no,
[29:00]If the whole thing's like throw the whole thing out, Start over. Like that should be like, okay, If that happens, fine, but no one ever does that. No, this drink tastes like shit. People would try a wine and they're like, Oh yeah, I can really taste the Oaky after birth or whatever. After birth? After birth? Yeah. No, I'm with you Russell. Unless your bartender is really going to just like Start over or fix it. They're just trying to have a drink behind the bar. Russell, that would bother me. Listen, I know it's not sanitary. I know it's not unsanitary. I know it's clean. It still feels dirty to me. You know what I mean? Just a little bit of taste of that drink. I'm like, I don't really want to drink a drink That somebody else has tasted. That's kind of my- Yeah, it's your drink. It's Russell's drink. That's kind of my baseline. I don't like it. Another thing I was going to ask you guys, We also, I was in Matt's neighborhood. I was down, I went to book club the other day. It's a bar, kind of a nice bar restaurant. I don't know, Matt once at like 55th And I don't know, Xerxes or somewhere over there. 54th. In Penn, yeah. Right next to the old Ace Hardware.
[30:00]Yes. Cross from the Red Wagon. This is in Penn? Yep, cross from the Red Wagon, Right down from, what's the Chilean place or the, What's the, there's a fancy place in the corner. I can't think of, yeah. Is Broder's gone? Is there, are there any Broder's left? That's on 50th. Broder's is on 50th. So we go there and this was a perfect spot. We went there in a week. I think it was a, maybe a Friday or I think a Saturday night. So we went there and not too busy, Sat at the bar, had some really good drinks, Hung out for a little bit. And then afterwards we went over to the 50th in France area. We went out for sushi on Saturday night. So we go and we ended up having to wait a little bit. It's kind of a small little spot. And we ended up waiting and I was going to see When the people at the front desk at a restaurant, If they're going to tell you It's a 10 to 15 minute wait, What is the longest the wait can be Before you're annoyed at what they told you for the time?
[31:00]Oh, but see, like I'm, I think usually, excuse me, I'm, I'm convinced. Somebody tells you, ah, it's a 20 minute wait. They're telling you that Cause it's really only a 10 minute wait, right? Oh, it's an hour. Well, that's because it's 30 to 40. You think they normally they overshoot So it makes it so it's a better feeling When you get in earlier. Yes. So something like Sarah We're all for gold places, But she's pretty good about getting reservations now. So it's like, Hey, it's a half hour wait. I'm like, well, it's fine. We'll be in in 15 minutes kind of a thing. Matt, the people that make that decision that do that, To me, they're just like a twinkie, good hostess. Good hostess. Yep. But if it's, if it's, If it hits a half hour or it hits 15 minutes, Then I start to look around a little bit and then, But I'm also always, are you the judging type Russell? Like, Oh, these people were here before us And they're a group of four. So they'll probably get there. You know, what do you think? Yeah, of course he is. There's also the like, I might wait 15 minutes, But if I, if after 15 minutes,
[32:00]I'm going to end up at that table, I'm not going to wait for that. If it's 15 minutes, I can sit at the bar That I'm going to wait, but like, I'm But Russell to your question, If they say 10 to 15 minutes and I wait 16 minutes, I might be ready to go. 15 minutes goes by 16. I'm pulling the, hey, Jenny, go up there. See what's going on. You know what I mean? Sorry, I didn't want to do it, But I've got to unleash Jenny on the hostess. That's the way it is. Sorry. It's kind of like, it's good to me. It's kind of like a, yeah, It's kind of like a, the chocolate donuts, bad hostess. Bad ones, bad, but the Twinkie. Well, it's the only one I could think of, it's good. I don't even think a Twinkie is that good. To me, the chocolate cake, the cupcake top hostess Is the chocolate cupcake with the white stuff inside. Better than the Ding Dong, Better than the Swiss Rolls, top hostess right there. Although Swiss Rolls is a little Debbie, I think. Wait, where's Star Crunch fit in?
[33:00]Get the fuck out of here with Star Crunch. Fuck you. Fuck off. God damn it, Aaron. That really pissed me off. I've never seen anything more than this. Can you imagine, hey, honey, I got you. It's like 100 grand, kind of. I got you delicious treats for your lunch. Oh my God. What's it going to be? Is it going to be a zebra cake? Is it going to be? Oh no, it's a Star Crunch. Good. Rob, you go up to San Francisco or Oakland and you visit. You stay at Aaron's house. He's like, hey, you need a snack? I got some hostess stuff in there. He comes out with a Star Crunch. I kept half that Kevin Crunch shake in the freezer, Rob. You come on and see me. We're going to go to Hypey Burger. Oh my God. Listen, we could do a wife swap where you take my wife And I take that shake. Please, take my wife. Take her, yeah. You see Aaron's wife going like this, whew. All right. She's holding the camera. So anyways, so we go there and it ended up Being about a 45 minute wait and during the wait, I was kind of thinking like how long is too long before? And I wasn't even annoyed because I was like, oh, it's
[34:00]What's just hanging out. We're just standing here. It's not the end of the world. But do you get a drink waiting or anything? No, it's too small. It's just not like there. You're standing outside actually outside. And there's other people outside and they actually Have kind of like, you'd call it like a bus stop type thing Where people can kind of stand in like a heated area outside. But now this is getting packed with people. And now there's kids that are getting jammed in there And everything. It's starting to get too much. But I patiently just stood there in silence for like 45 Minutes, like staring at the wall in a zen, Mat-like moment of stoic behavior. I didn't say it. I just sat there and said nothing for 45 minutes. I've got to ask. Yeah. Your roommate does not seem like a person that's Going to suffer this. I would think that your roommate after 16 minutes Would be over there. What's going on here? What's the roommate up to? She did go in and sneak past to use the breast room Once or twice while we were waiting. It came out, but she was more kind of tracking When people were going in. I think she was more curious of, oh,
[35:00]This group was here before. So I know we got to wait for this group. And I think she handled it very maturely, Rob. Wow. I mean, not wow, of course. That's what I meant to say. My whole thing is that if they say 15 minutes, And then it's say it's 18, you're like, well, I've waited the 15. What's another five? You've got to stick it out, right? And then now that I'm there, what's another five now? And then eventually, yeah, you look like the sucker If you're there for like an hour or whatever. But if you came to that place to eat that sushi And you got nothing else That you're not pressed for anything else, I think it's just part of it. Let me chalk it up to a little bit of wasted time, But whatever. Let me ask you guys this. I read an article recently, and it was about a person Who bribes the hostess. We'll give them a 50. If, what do you think of that? Are you, yeah, are you grease and palms? I mean, to me, you're doing that at baller. If it would work, I would do it. I've never done it, but I think I don't see why wouldn't. I think it's a great idea. Because what if they just take the 50 And then look at you like you're a dumb shit?
[36:00]Like you just got the way the wall works. I feel like I'd have to have knowledge that it works. Like if Russell went to a fancy restaurant and goes, Hey, you got to try this place. Make sure when you get there, just slip them a 20, Slip them a 50, and it'll really pay off. Like that kind of a thing. Like you have to know that it's one, Like allowed and two, like part of the game kind of a thing. Like, because if you just did it randomly And they're like, okay, what is this for? You're still at the back of the line Or whatever kind of a thing. Then yeah, I would need knowledge that it actually works. Yeah. You see me over there. Honey, do you have 20? Okay, watch this. Hey. It's like what happens when your kid loses a tooth And you're like, well, how much cash do we have? Russell, I have a, so you were a 50th in France, Eating sushi. Yes. Wow. Is that any diner or not? That is a- Depends on what side you're on. Well, because I want to try a joke on you guys
[37:00]That I wrote tonight. Okay, Aaron, I'm going to put some echo on your voice Because you're at a stand-up club, so. Okay, I got to see, hang on. I got to see if this is a good joke or not. Okay. Okay. So earlier tonight- Hey, Aaron- It's Minneapolis, you're correct, man. You're on the east side of the east side. Aaron, can I just say this? If this joke isn't good, I'm going to be so fucking pissed. So earlier tonight, And I know that our friend John from Edina Is not on to hear this joke, But on the text chain, Edina, Did they win the state 6A football Championship, is that right? They did, yep. So one of our earlier callers said, Edina, state boys soccer champions, State girls swimming champions, What's next 2025 is the year of the Hornet? And I wanted to say, what's next? Edina gets a good restaurant? Oh, wow. Is that funny or not? Do they actually have good restaurants now? I don't know. You know what though? Any blast against Edina, You'd know what's going to play. I'd love to know. Matt, what do you think, Edina? Does it have a good restaurant?
[38:00]Can you, Can you, Edina and Edina? They kind of don't that the ones on the other side Of 50th of France have been closing. The barrio just closed. Wow. Okay. Well, I'm going to, I'm going to, I should have used it. I should have used it. But now, John, when you hear this. Although Gavin Kacen's opening up something In that new development on the Northwest corner. He's bringing one of his restaurants there, Things like that. So that's goofy over there anyway. That's like new 50th in France, Not like the classic 50th in France, Which I'm sure rustles it. Is the parking ramp still there? No. Oh, the other thing I was going to tell you. So book club, which is by Matt's house, And I believe Matt and his, Your family goes there once in a while. I think you told me that, right? Yeah, we're frequent. We're frequent the place. I'd say Matt, there were, I don't know if it always, If it ever gets packed or not. There was probably less than 20 people In the restaurant we were there. It was some pretty relaxed.
[39:00]Up on the TV behind the bar, Back to the future too. Oh, it is very random. I am into it. That's fun. I'm like, I need to see, I need to see the sports almanac. I do. It's very random. I go like every once in a great while After ref and basketball, I'll go there just to have dinner And before heading home kind of a thing. And often they'll have like the basketball game on Or a hockey game or something on too, But they do have just the rando movies as well. So I thought about Matt Because I think they have a deal on that. If I read it correctly, If you get like take out food to take home, They will buy you a drink while you're waiting. Yep, free beer. What? And I was like, I could see Matt totally being like, Hey, I'm going to pick up our skewers Or whatever he gets his one beer, Then he heads home. You guys know I would be there every weekend. Like no question. Two things about back to the future. Russ would stop by for 10 minutes one weekend And then off to 10 other places.
[40:00]Two things about back to the future too. Number one, of course, I've never related to a bad guy As much as I did Biff in that movie Where he just makes an empire gambling on sports. I was like, this is brilliant. This is the greatest scene ever. Number two, how much did you think About hoverboards after that movie? Like hoverboards, I bet I thought about hoverboards Once a week for the rest of my life after that movie. Like anytime magnets, When are we getting hoverboards? When are we going to hoverboards? Does anybody know what it really is? It was the coolest fucking thing. Rolling going, Rob. How's it going with you? Oh, listen, guys what it is? Hold on, Russell, how was the sushi put? You waited an hour? Is it worth it? Is it good sushi? The sushi is Amasushi. And it was fantastic. There was another, There's the same ownership group That owned one in Northeast called Momo Sushi. Oh yeah. And it burnt down recently. And so part of the reason we were down In that neck of the woods, Matt, Down around France and Penn And those different streets in the 50th area
[41:00]Was because the one we used to love to go to burnt down And it's gone. Can you think of a restaurant Less likely to burn down than sushi? I mean, they're not cooking that much. You know what I mean? Like, I think maybe we got some rice going. That's it. I've been at the fire department you call. You say a sushi place to burn their fire department. It's like, what? How is that possible? Burn down. So we went to the other one and he died. And it was fantastic. We had a great time. I would go again. You know what the other thing? We got a bottle of wine, a bunch of sushi rolls and everything. And it was very appropriately priced. As someone who goes to like, Checks out new restaurants and stuff, Some of it you get the other night we went somewhere And it was really good. But the price tag, it was outrageous For what you got for it. But when you go, at least my experience has been When you go out for sushi, You usually get a pretty good bang for your buck. So this is a $30 bottle, $40 bottle. What's a reasonable bottle, Russell? I don't even know what the price was, But our total bill for what we got was like around, Just about a hundred bucks. I was like, I thought that was pretty good.
[42:00]That's good for two people. Yeah, that's good. For a bunch of sushi and a bottle of wine, I thought it was a great deal. Yeah, all right. Wait, you said sushi and a bottle of wine for a hundred bucks? Yeah. Yeah, that's highway robbery. That's amazing. Wow, guys. The world is so fucked. It's a hundred bucks. It's a hundred bucks. It's crazy. That's wow. That's crazy. Can you imagine my parents, me telling my parents? So yeah, sushi and wine for a hundred bucks. That's a really good deal. Oh my God. That's the best deal out there. Yeah. If you say that's my parents, like 1992, They would just like, if I said, Well, here's the future, sushi and wine, a hundred bucks. They would be like the robots and Robocop too That can't survive. They just grab the guns, blow their brains out. Listen what it is. It's the episode before Thanksgiving, Which was the last episode, But you guys bullied me into doing a different rolling going. So instead of doing it this week, We are have our Thanksgiving Day draft today. Wait, when did we bully? Oh, I missed that part.
[43:00]No, I got bullied into telling the story About waving at the public security. You guys, it doesn't matter. So we are gonna do our Thanksgiving Day draft. This is a four round draft. We are going in the order. We're doing a snake draft in the order Of the windows on my screen, Which means I am first for the first round. Okay. What are we doing? Convenient. The first round, Russell, is we are drafting The best Thanksgiving Day food period. It's gonna be real quick. I'm saying stuffing. It's simple. And stuffing, by the way. I would never eat stuffing. Oh, stuffing. No way. No meat addition, okay? Oh, absolutely not. No, get that shit out there. No sausage, no meat addition. That is my draft pick. Okay, stuffing. Russell, you don't like stuffing? I would never. That cranberries, I'm out on that stuff At a Thanksgiving Day table. I want no part of it. What are you eating, Russell? If there's not stuffing, no cranberries. What are you doing? I'll take a sweet potato on Thanksgiving round. That's gonna be my number two overall pick. Okay, I'll tell you what, Russell. I'll take the what? You and I would be a good couple
[44:00]Because I'm gonna have the marshmallows On top of the sweet potatoes. That's what I'm gonna eat. I don't know. I'm out on that too. There's no way. You're fucking with my head. Matt, what do you think? What's your number one? Matt, guess what? You're on the clock. Well, I'm gonna go with stuffing with meat, But no onions or very little salaries. So no crunchy stuff, but a lot of meat, a lot of bread. That's what I want from my stuffing. Wow, this is wild. Russell, you're on the clock. What's your number one? Is it Erin up? No, no, you went out of order, Russell. It's on my screen, it's how I see it. Just say it again, just so we can move it along. Russell, what's your potato? There you go. Erin, you're on the clock. Macaroni and cheese. I didn't know. I think macaroni and cheese sounds great. Admittedly, we have never been a family That has ever had macaroni. Oh, no, it's not something my family. It's not a Thanksgiving food. It is a Thanksgiving food. It's a southern thing. I think it's a southern thing.
[45:00]It's a soul food thing. I love it. I know, but now I need that mac and cheese. I'm not saying it's what I grew up with, But I'm saying if there's mac and cheese on the table, That's when I'm grabbing first. That's my base. That's what I work with from there. I like that. Let me ask you this. Is carb base is that instead of like a mashed potato? It makes sense. No, it doesn't. I've listened to both of you. I'm not listening to either one of you. You're both fucked, okay? Now, second round of the draft. Erin, you are on the clock, okay? Best part. I can't take anyone's thoughts on food seriously If they like it more with marshmallows on it. Disgusting. I'm not with the marshmallows. Literally, nobody agrees with you. There is nobody agrees with you. That is the dumbest thing that's ever been said On the podcast. I'm gonna think about some of the things that Erin said. Okay. What? What are my kitchen strays? Is this a snake draft, Or does it go back to you at the fifth pick? Erin, with the first pick in the second round, Erin, best part of Thanksgiving.
[46:00]What is it? Now, I did text you guys this list earlier And I know you thought about this, okay? So the answer should be right on the tip of your tongue. I thought we were doing a flag draft or something. Oh, wow. Yeah, that was different. That's next week. Flag draft, next week. That's part is getting outside in the morning. Okay, I gotta do some stuff. I gotta do it. Getting outside in the morning Is the best part of Thanksgiving. Hell yeah, man. Go take a hike, play some basketball, Get outside, move around, do some stuff, And then eat and drink a lot. Wow. You know what? That does make it sound pretty good. Russell, you're on the clock. What do you think? Best part of Thanksgiving. I'm a big, I like people saying what they're thankful for. Maybe it's seeing my nieces and nephews do it And occasionally they'll Someone's thankful for grammar. Of those things are always, I love that type of thing. I like when people have to go around And say nice things about other people. That always gets me.
[47:00]So I'm gonna say being thankful is the best part of it for me. Matt, what's your best part of Thanksgiving? Had a tradition since maybe I was 14 Of watching a Christmas vacation On the night of Thanksgiving And now the whole family watches it. So now it's a family tradition As opposed to a bunch of friends from Richfield Who used to always watch everybody. And so every year since I was 14 I've watched it. Rob, you gotta play family tradition. Like if he says family tradition, you have to play it. Oh, that's true. It's playing in the background right now. Rob doesn't know that it's a song. He does not know that's a song. Excuse me. Hank, why do you drink? Why do you smoke it out of here? Thank you. Okay. All right. I've been listening to a lot of Elba country music Recently actually. Listen, I'm on the clock. Best part of Thanksgiving. Listen, of course, you think I'm gonna say pie Because it's the one time of the year Where there's multiple pies in the house. But the correct answer is I do this every year. I've got to tradition myself. I place a bet that's just a little too big. Okay. It's one where I'm like, at the time I'm like,
[48:00]This is a fucking lie. This is so good. It's gluttonous as you will. Hey, it's Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for the ability to bet on these apps. I pick one that's a little too big. Guys, sweating and over while you're at the dinner table With your family, trying to talk to them, It's one of the all time great parts of Thanksgiving. God, is it good? The real disease part of betting on Thanksgiving Around is if you bet like the late, like NFL network game, That is you are a true degenerate. If you're betting like the Ravens eight PL. You know, it's like it's like the Texans Ravens. You're like, well, this isn't even a Thanksgiving day team. But I was still like. You turn it on and the uniforms are fucked. You just, what the hell is this Color thing they're wearing? Text the text chain. Nobody responds. Nobody else has watched the game. Okay. I've got a hundred and $5 right now in the over. Next, Neil from Lakefield's watching. Don't worry. Neil's watching. Neil's always watching. And he's got thoughts. Listen, next up, third round, worst part of Thanksgiving.
[49:00]Super clear. Okay. It's the dishes. Oh, by the way, did you see me scramble Out of my seat earlier? Is there anything like a dryer That makes a weird beeping sound and you look And there's just two letters on it? So it's like DR. You're like, well, that's not good. I don't know what that means. Yeah. You see me just out of whack. It's like off balance. I know how to fix that. Worst part of Thanksgiving. You just like take the stuff and shake it up And put it back in and start. I'm not doing that. No way. My kids are putting in a million towels. Maybe that's what. You can't do that math in your head. Oh, maybe two teenage girls doing five sweatshirts And 10 towels as a one load of laundry is fucking Shit up. I wonder if that's true. Worst part of Thanksgiving, correct answer Is the dishes. Okay. Nobody likes to do the dishes. Nobody wants to do it. And I'll tell you what the worst part is, We get the China out. So it's hard to do the dishes. You got to be careful. This is the one time we used the dumb fucking China That I said I didn't want to register for And we ended up registering for. Matt, what do you think? Hot take, what's your hot take?
[50:00]He's going to say hot take, love doing dishes. In fact, the other day I saw a guy at a shirt At the mall or something like that and he had a shirt. And I think Sarah, hopefully Sarah gets it for me For Christmas. It says load the dishwasher like a champ And it had like a dishwasher with the partially out Of everything stacked and I think that's a t-shirt I'm going to have for Vegas. It is so much better to put the dishes away, Matt. What are the dishes away? It's way above the dishes. I like doing the dishes. I was thinking about that with Matthew. This is subverting the draft, But I feel like I'm a pretty good like house person. Like I do some stuff. Like I do shopping. I can do laundry on my own now. She doesn't do anything. I know. There's a lot that I do without consulting Anna, But for some reason in my mind, Running the dishwasher is always a consultative. Like I never run the dishwasher without being like, Is it time to run the dishwasher? And I know Matt, you're in every night. Run the dishwasher. You run your house. For me, that's the one thing where I'm like, I better, I gotta check before I run the dishwasher. I don't know why.
[51:00]Why is that? Can I just say this, Aaron? Shocked you own a dishwasher. Can't believe it. Would have bet the farm that you're not running. It's a Bosch. It's nice. That is nice. Matt, worst part. Came with us. I don't like being interrupted watching. I love watching football And I know there's too much football, So you're going to get interrupted or whatever, But I just, I don't like being it. I like to watch the football game. I don't like being interrupted to tell everybody What I'm thankful for or anything like that. So maybe that flu is going to come on back. You know what I mean? Next. Little bit. Russell, you're on the clock. Worst part about Thanksgiving. You know, I, a lot of times I've always been Bring some wine to Thanksgiving. I, people, they always get Gwertsaminer, Reisling, people do white wine with turkey. I think I always get the white wine. I never enjoy the white wine. The white wine always ends up half full. No one ever drinks it. We end up pouring it down the drain. I think it's white wine. Go with the gamay. Go do the gamay. Gamay goes great with.
[52:00]Yeah, Aaron, we're all watching the football gamay. So what are you talking about? I just told you I'm gambling A ton on the gamay. Okay. What was your last game? Me and my grandpa and my gamay are watching the gamay. Aaron, worst part of football. What do you think? I'm sorry, worst part of Thanksgiving. Matt's right though. I am now, I'm complete. Like for so many years now, Thanksgiving football Is just completely out of my mind because. Male cheerleaders. I'm like, Matt, like if I'm going to watch football I'm going to be super boring Doing nothing but watching the football. And that's just not what's happening on Thanksgiving. But the worst part is when Thanksgiving is over And you've got gas And then you might be like a little bit hungry Depending on if you ate too early, stuffed yourself. Now you're kind of hungry again, But you don't know if you're hungry or not. And then you're partying a lot. That's okay. Well, I know, but it's like that time, Like should I go to bed, should I eat more? Like do I need to sleep on the couch Because I smell bad? Like that's a tough thing. Listen, bonus round. No talking about it just quick. What's the perfect time to eat
[53:00]Your Thanksgiving dinner? Aaron, what's your favorite time To eat Thanksgiving dinner? 4 p.m. So late. Russell, what do you think? 259. Okay, Matt, what do you think? One o'clock. Yeah, I knew Matt was going to say that. Guys, the correct answer of course is 430. All right, we're going to go back to Aaron Because that was not a real draft round. Aaron, you're on the clock. What is last round? What food should be part of Thanksgiving? What should we put in there? And you can say macaroni if you want. Oh, chicken wings. Okay, well, I guess that's the point. You could say something. Why do you want chicken wings? Like deep fried chicken wings? What do you mean deep? I mean, chicken wings are usually, They're a perfect food that they should, Like any meal where you're eating a lot of stuff Should involve chicken wings. Listen, hand up. I was thinking about turkey legs at the fair. Okay, I was like, it's kind of similar To what's going on. I realized I was thinking of turkey legs. That's on me, getting my poultry confused. I'm just like, man, I haven't played at wings.
[54:00]They're amazing. You know what? I gotta admit, Thanksgiving, Hand around the mashed potatoes, Hand around the sweet potatoes and marshmallows. Oh, by the way, here come some garlic and salt wings. Yes, thank you. You can always eat one more chicken wing. No one's gonna be upset about having chicken wings At the Thanksgiving table. Can you suburban guys do me a favor on Thanksgiving? Can somebody go to Buffalo Wild Wings And see if anyone's eaten in there? I gotta know. I gotta know how many people are eating At Buffalo Wild Wings on Thanksgiving Over under one and a half people. Oh, a ton of people. Put balls on. Put balls on. People don't have like Families, things like that. Yeah, it's a great spot. All right. I actually think it sounds fun. Why not? I agree. Russell, if you go to the Buffalo Wild Wings And you don't come out to New York, I'll be so pissed. Russell, food that should be part of Thanksgiving. What do you think? Hmm. Food that should be part of Thanksgiving That isn't already. I'm gonna say, well, this isn't Thanksgiving. We used to do this on Christmas a lot.
[55:00]We used to be like a ham family. And then one year we pivoted. You stole it. You stole it. That's not what We pivoted away from ham And became a lasagna on Christmas Day type of family. So I'm gonna say like, if you were to get rid of it, Like if I went to my mom's, Like if we did a family thing and someone said, Hey, we're doing lasagna instead of turkey For this Thanksgiving, I'd be like, hell yeah, Give me that red bottle of wine. No one's gonna be mad. Oh, that's beautiful, Russell. Oh my gosh. And just like the guy who owns the terrible Timberwolves, Glenn Taylor, it's got a lot of layers. You know what I mean? Cause he had all those chickens that he had to kill. Matt, what do you think? Oh my God. Matt. I was gonna say ham. Leftover ham is so much better than leftover turkey For ham sandwiches the next day. All that good stuff. Put it with your eggs, all that. So I think a nice big ham Instead of a turkey should be allowed. Problem with ham, kinda slimy. Thanksgiving hams can get a little slimy, A little gross, man. Thoughts on slimy ham. Hold on. I gotta ask you guys about this too.
[56:00]So I grew up in a house where, We just bought whatever ham from the grocery store. I have family that lives on a farm And when they do ham, It is not the same thing as like what you buy From Cub Foods or whatever. It's like deliciously amazingly fantastic. We need Brian from East St. Paul to call in. Yeah, you need a real butcher shop to get you there. If you have a real ham, Rob, There's no slime on that bad boy. It's a totally different game Than what you're buying at the grocery store. Listen, your relatives going ham on the ham. I love it. They're going ham on it. Yeah, if it's already spiral cut, I'm questioning it. If it's in a bag, I'm questioning it. Like you need a butcher shop to get you a good ham. Picture this. Turkey comes out, stuffing comes out, Mashed potatoes come out. Green bean casserole comes out. All right. Devil eggs comes out. Devil eggs, now part of Thanksgiving. These devil eggs are where it's at.
[57:00]That is the correct one. And now, oh no. If you notice a lot of the things that Rob wants here, It just feeds into his profile as a mush head. He likes the marshmallows. He wants to eat anyway. Yeah, he wants the mush. Thanksgiving is a mush meal. It's a mush meal. You're right. It's a lot of mush. It's kind of a mush heads delight. You know what I mean? Hey, the chickens are taste like wood. I don't know. The peas are all mushy. Sign me up. Rob, what about just ice cream with no pie? Just ice cream. That's your dessert. Instead of pie at Thanksgiving. Yes. That's a great idea. That's a great idea. Pumpkin ice cream. That's a great idea. No, no, no. Can I just say this, by the way? Pumpkin pie is getting shit on lately. Everybody's very fucking washing their mouths about pumpkin pie. Pumpkin pie is so good. Everybody's talking about pumpkin pie. Well, don't do that. Listen, let's talk about the cut by the slits. Now, this might be the fastest about the album
[58:00]We've ever done. Don't have a ton of information. I will say this. Maybe the fastest we go through an album, too? This album was nowhere to be found on any of my normal sites To find albums. I couldn't find it anywhere. I had to download the entire album off YouTube And chop it up. This is the first album. It's on Apple Music, dude. Oh, well, I know, but I can't download. Aaron, do you think I just downloaded from Apple Music? Oh. I got to download the MP3s. OK, and I do want to find stuff on. Oh, I'm sorry, Aaron. Do I have digital physical media in my house That I own, kind of? OK, of course I do it legally. Now, this is their debut album. It comes out in 1979. It's punk, and it's reggae, and it's Kind of art rock all mixed together. That's why I thought it was just going to be straight punk. It's so reggae. I was excited when I read the Wikipedia stuff about it. I was like, oh, I might like this. And then I do hear a lot of reggae. I don't. I really do. I heard it.
[59:00]I heard it. OK. There's some, but a lot of it is just a reverb. You know what I mean? Like, it's a reverb. Yeah, it's like, yeah. I swear to God, sometimes there's An accent where I'm like, I don't know if we could be Doing that accent. I enjoy it. I like dub music, but it's to me like, I didn't get dub from a lot of this. Maybe I was just listening at the wrong time. I was trying to work at the same time. I missed it. Band Forms. Band Forms in 1962. OK. She's, she's 14. Lead singer Ari Rock born in 1962. She's 14 when the band starts. I'm sorry, I didn't start in 1962. She was born in 62. I was confused. OK. She is 14 when this band starts. She's the lead singer. She, they go out and they tour with the clash. So who she is, this teenage punk rock singer Touring with the clash. This album got all the way up to 30 on the UK album Charts. I just want you to think about that. What is going on in the UK where this album got up to 30? They love Reggae. They love Skah. They love Reggae. Absolutely crazy. OK. So let's get in. Ribbit, ribbit. I mean, guys, basically it's post-punk.
[1:00:00]Like this is going to lead into the riot girl stuff. This is going to, it's, listen, let's talk. Let's get into it. Instant hit. I mean, this sums it up. The song. What are we getting into? This is a song. OK, so there's some Reggae guitar a little. This is a song about how she hung out With Sid Vicious in his drug use. Big Sid Vicious or little Sid Vicious? Oh my god, I forgot about that bit. I'm a big Sid Vicious fan. I'm going to say Sid Vicious's catchphrase now. Hey, it's me, Sid Vicious. Did he ever catch you? Did he ever took his power bomb or not? Yeah, I'm sure. Oh. Listen, I just a regular bomb. Too old, no more power bombs. So tough. Joke slam. It's almost, I thought it sounded a little bit like Kesha to me. There are parts where I could hear a little Kesha. Like, look guys, this is a tough listen.
[1:01:00]It's just, it's, yeah. It's Ernie. It's people experiencing, which is cool. All the love and from the 70s. It's quirky. It's different. You know, sometimes if you do everything like everyone else, You know who you're going to be like everybody else. There you go. So I appreciate they're doing something different, But I will say this feels like the most amateur band we've Listened to on 250 some episodes. Because the B-52s were making kind of nonsense music. But it was musical and fun. It sounded like they went into a studio to make some songs. Agreed. Bend, spend. Although I did appreciate some of the drum fills on this. I enjoyed it. The drumming I liked, I'm going to be out. That's my favorite thing about the album was the drums. I'm not saying she's a great drummer. I have no idea, but I did enjoy the drums. I do. I will say, I know. I wanted to like this.
[1:02:00]You know me, I kind of try to like these silly albums Or I kind of try to find the inspiration. You really wanted to like it because of the cover. Is it a New York thing? Is it a Rolling Stone thing? What's driving its popularity here? Well, they like this British punk kind of this like, This is not the first like proto punk or post punk band we've had. I mean, Devo, B-52s, they kind of like this era. FM, the song is written by their drummer Who eventually left the band, Which is why there's only three people on the album cover. There's not a musical moment on this That touches the worst musical moment On the Janice Joplin album. No, no, no. You can't even compare them. All right, we're going to keep going. Shoplifting, of course. I did recently see a tic-tac Of somebody getting caught shoplifting in the airport. It shook me to my core,
[1:03:00]But they were shoplifting headphones. They're shoplifting expensive headphones. Put me back, not worried about it. Nobody's going to get me for peanut butter M&Ms. As shoplifting once as a kid, I was like five or six years old And I stole a thing of bubble ease. It's like it was like the bubble gum That came in like the spaceship With like six little bubble gum things in it. And I was, Oh, you got a rush you can never match. I know what you're talking about. No, I did that. I brought it home and I came inside with it And I told my mom I found it out on the driveway And I don't think that flew. And I believe she may have made me go back to the PDQ And tell them I took it. So Russell, are you saying that you did something Outside of your house that was bad And you kind of turned yourself in? I did. No, I got caught. I thought it was the only way I could explain How I had like a pack of bubble gum. I was going to say, It was kind of like Bethel to me. It was no turning in. It was dumb shit.
[1:04:00]Caught in a lie. That rocks. Caught in a lie. New town. This is about drugs And they actually, There's sound effects here Where the guy's dropping spoons And shaking up a big bag of matches. I mean, the albums we've had like this already, Slater, Kenny, I think is similar. The clash is maybe close to this, but I don't. It was like both of them. It was like both of those that had like a song Where you're like, okay, I like this song. Right? And you just don't get the one you get As part of the extras. That's not even part of the album. No, the clash wrote catchy tunes, man. Ping pong affair. I did. Okay. All right. This is the song. Getting up there. Who would win in the four of us? Ping pong tournament. Who's winning? I kicked the shit out of all of you guys. I'm fucking great at ping pong. There was a period in my life in the 20s Where we were at John from East Richfield.
[1:05:00]We would play Tom from Richfield, John from East Richfield. We would play so much ping pong. Yep. I think every male has a point like that in their life, Right? Where you're like, that's my ping pong weekend Or my ping pong years or whatever. Matt or Rob, what's your thing? So Matt knows he would kick our ass. Like what's your thing that if we wouldn't all did it, Like not weightlifting, But some other game where you're like, Oh, I know I'd be better at these guys than this thing. What's, what's your thing? Probably pleasuring a woman. What would I be best at? I mean, why? You know what I did very well at once? We went out for Steve, that Steve's 40th birthday Years ago, four or five years ago now. We did axe throwing. I was really good at axe throwing. I was one, there was probably like 10, 12 guys there And a lot of the guys there were good athletes, Good hand-eye coordination. And I remember being one of the better axe throwers And I was like, that's pretty cool. Listen, I would say I had a period of my life
[1:06:00]Where I got exceptionally good at botchy ball. Hey, now, do you think I was employed during this time? No, I was not employed. I got really good at botchy ball And of course translated that to a slow pitch softball pitcher, Which I was also good at, but was scary. I guess it was the balls. You're like the best player in your team, right? Well, yes, pretty much. Best athlete? Best athlete? Easily best athlete. Fuck off. You guys remember all my stories. Yeah, what would you be, What would you be to say In some sort of game of hand-eye coordination skill Type of thing? I'm not gonna be guys at any games of hand-eye, Coordination, I don't think. I bet I could jump rope longer than most of you guys now Because I practice. Yeah, hand up, you could beat me. Yeah, I think I could be a jump rope. If you could jump rope five times in a row, I bet you could beat me. Like I, and I, and of course, listen, When I had to do jump rope in gym, Did I often hit my toes just to be like, Oh, my gosh, I gotta reset.
[1:07:00]Oh, I gotta take my time. Of course I did, okay? I'm gonna take my best, The way I jump rope is backwards. It's like the only way I can do it for, Yeah, I'm a backwards jump rope. I'm gonna try that one. I'll do this. So to try to go forward, I look very uncoordinated. You know what I'll do, Russell? I'll do the side to side like this. You know what I mean? To kind of twirl it back inside. You're doing rope flows. Like with David Weck, the Weck Method. You're doing the drag and flow. Yeah, of course, Aaron. You don't need to explain the Weck Method to us, okay? I'm going, I'm Wecking off all the time. I'm going crazy. Going righty head left. Yeah. The Weck Method. Rope flow is a whole different thing. I'm just supposed to use that as a heavier rope for that. Or drag and roll. Sorry, it's the drag and roll. You think my Weck Method doesn't lead to some rope flows? Okay, I got news for you. There's lots of rope flows. Love unda romance. I kind of like this one. I gotta say, there is a place for music like this. Like we don't need to be hard and kill it. It's just, it shouldn't be the sign of the list, right?
[1:08:00]Of course there's a place for it. This is what somebody's into. That's great. Then typical girls. Of course, the lyric, it opens with typical girls Get upset too quickly. Do you guys agree with that? Do you think women get upset too quickly? Russell, what do you think? Nope, usually we deserve it. Matt, women getting upset. In my life, women are getting upset a lot. I've got a lot of women upset at me a lot of the time. Okay, they do seem to flip out about nothing. All right, I was just asking questions. I was asking normal questions. Matt, can I ask Rob what? You talk a lot about how other people in your family Maybe talk a lot. I feel like you probably talk a lot. Like, do you pester people? Because I have to tell people sometimes, I don't want to be pester, you're pestering me. I pester when I come home. I'm fired up because I'm normally so high on caffeine From lifting weights or just got done due to jitsu That I'm pestering everybody. And then my kid is a big talker. And my wife, she's been known to talk a little bit. I'll just say that right now.
[1:09:00]We will just all be talking at the same time And we're trying to get a word in. We're just all trying to wait. It's Russell, you would hate it over here. It's just, it's way too much. Okay, there was a song on here. This album, I should just tell you guys this. This album was in Kurt Cobain's journal. They found a journal after he died. Top 50 albums of all time. Slitz, the cut was on it. Guess what? I got a list of five other songs that are on there. No, don't make that face, Matt. Don't do that. We're only what we were one song away from you. I know, this is worth it. This is good. I'm gonna go fast. What's crazy is 50 albums. He had so many punk, all-female punk bands. Okay, now that might not be surprising Considering who he was running with at the time. But listen to this. One of the bands on his list, the album, The raincoats, the band, the raincoats, It's a 1977 British all-punk band, A song called Supermarket.
[1:10:00]Kurt Cobain loved this all-female punk. And I gotta say, this is better than the last one. I like this, I listen to it. I agree. If you get a chance, go listen to the Donnas. Still, the Donnas turn 21, in my mind, One of the greatest albums of the 90s Or 2000s that nobody talks about. Good. This is by Colossal Youth, Credit in the straight world. It's off the album, Colossal Youth, sorry. Just wonder why he was so attracted to Courtney Love. Well, this song was covered by Hole. We've heard this song already on the Hole album. No way. So, of course, one of the bands in his journal Was covered by his wife, that's him. Another one, Marine Girls. This song was recorded, this album, 1981. It's recorded at a home studio, released on cassette. The band is Marine Girls. This is Honey.
[1:11:00]Oh, I like this. See? I'm telling you. I saw there's a podcast where it's going through Kurt Cobain's 50 Albums list, And I was like, it's fucking smart. Those guys fucking thought ahead. God damn it. He must have had all these on cassette, right? I'm sure. I mean, it's kind of fun to think about what influence him. Then, of course, the album Pod by the Breeders. Okay, you ever heard of a little song by John Lennon? Oh. This is the Breeders' debut album. This was on Kurt Cobain's journal list of the best albums. And then, guess what? The first PJ Harvey album ever. Okay, Off Dry. This is Dress. It's the first single, 1991. So Kurt Cobain was not only doing bands, Let me fast forward a little bit. Kurt Cobain was not only doing bands like in the 70s,
[1:12:00]He was into female punk in the 90s. He was true to himself, man. Guys, I think I might like PJ Harvey. It's kind of fucking rocks. You wouldn't be the first member of this podcast, So it's PJ Harvey. Man, they're about to PJ Harvey's songs on the, The, Peaky Blinders show. I don't know. I haven't watched that in a long, I mean, it's been, what, six years Since the last episode came out? Yeah, that's too long, man. Four years? Four years ago. No, it's less than that. It was after Cobain. I think 2022, maybe. Those were the best female punk bands Around Kurt Cobain's journal. That's a good list. Good list, Rob. That is a good list. Nice, Rob. Thank you. Bad timing, but good list. Nice and quick. Very good. And then finally, Last song, Adventures Close to Home. This song was also recorded by a band called The Raincoats,
[1:13:00]Which was the drummer that's playing on this song. So the drummer quit the band, went to another band, Played this song on this album too, which is very punk. And this almost seems more produced. Like it almost gets more normal as we go. It sounds more listenable in a way. These other tunes just don't sound finished somehow. Even this, doesn't it sound like they're just Fucking around? I don't know. They sound like demos. Yeah, I don't know. Amateur houring or anything. Is that what it is? It just, yeah, it doesn't sound like they, They don't even need to keep going. If you threw this on and you threw a bunch Of like high school band just playing in their garage, I don't know that you're picking out the difference. But I don't think they would argue with that. I think that's what they're talking about, right? Like that's the whole point. I don't know. Now, of course guys, this does end our five episode run
[1:14:00]That Aaron has insisted on calling in. And he uses a very lecherous voice When he says that, but it is ladies night. Hello, ladies. The gifts and emojis he uses when he texts About ladies dates too is inappropriate. It's bad. One was just a close-up of a pumpkin. I was like, that doesn't even make sense to me. Listen, Rolling Well Tone. Is this album perfect at 260? By the way, we're into another 260. We're into a whole nother decade of albums here. Guys, we're getting close to 300. Is this album rolling? Hold on, hold on. This album, I don't even know what songs are on this, But is one, two, three, above a Beatles album. That's what I'm gonna think about. Hey, John, Ringo, and the rest lick my nuts. Okay?
[1:15:00]You suck. Now. There's, wait, but I'm still also, There are more Beatles albums. It's actually three more than another Beatles album. So it's above two albums. We have two Beatles albums. How do we still have Beatles albums left? Hard days. What night? They're the older ones. They're one of the biggest bands of all time. The Liverpool, the lads from Liverpool, Aaron, I can't wait. Can you imagine what I'm gonna talk about On those episodes? What am I gonna say? What am I gonna say about the Beatles That everybody doesn't already know? Okay, but you might hear, We might have a special guest appearance, Okay, by somebody, and I don't wanna say who it is. Dirty Granny? No. Wow. Dirty Granny, that doesn't, no. Dirty, no. Do not do this. Hey, it's Thanksgiving, my phone's ringing. This is such bullshit because you don't want, This is what happens is that I tried to move it along. You guys slow it down. Dirty Granny doesn't have anything to say. You know what I mean? Hey, hey, are you gonna be making over For Thanksgiving tomorrow? You know I am, sonny. I always come over for Thanksgiving.
[1:16:00]It's a real mushy day and I love that mushy food. You know I don't have any teeth And you know what that makes me good at? What's that? Oh God. Eating mashed potatoes, oh yeah. And I'll take your balls like a golf wash washer. Golf ball washer. Oh no. What? Dirty Granny. What? Oh, screwed up that joke or dirty granny. That's so disgusting that you would Screw up that joke that bad. Somebody did it playing ahead. Listen, Russell what I'm serving For Thanksgiving? What's that, Granny? My crotch. Dirty Granny, I don't like even the way you said that. It doesn't even seem, it doesn't even seem And you're looking for the sound effect to get out. It doesn't even seem that clever. You know what I mean? It's almost like you just said something disgusting To just kind of get out of this quickly. It's for the sake of it. This dirty granny's fallback move. Now, Russell, listen, Russell. Sounds like someone else I know. When you think about turkeys, What do you think about? Okay, muscles. Wishbone. Well, okay, I wasn't gonna say that. I was gonna say muscles,
[1:17:00]Which is why if this album is perfect at 260, It's really well toned. Just like those turkey muscles That we're about to feast on. Or if you're listening to this episode, You have feasted on already. Okay, it's a weird how this time works. Time only goes in one direction Unless you're on a podcast. Okay, then time seems to go on for so long. Or is this a rolling groan? Okay, just like at Thanksgiving, okay? Over's 44 and a half and they only get up to 44. Oh, yeah, that's the worst Thanksgiving ever. That's not what I'm thankful for. Rolling groan should be lower on the list, Which of course would be a higher number. Or did this get rolling wishbone? Okay, and I'm gonna edit this so it sounds like That's pretty clever. Did this get rolling wishbone? No, it's not a favorite offense that we're talking about On the text chain more than we should probably. Okay, or it's Thanksgiving. Okay, is anybody doing wishbone? Like if my kids- Love their flex bone. My kids don't know what a wishbone is. Okay, anybody's kids, are we doing wishbones? We have to like dry them out, right? Don't you have to dry them out?
[1:18:00]Yeah, let them sit around for a day or two, yeah. Really, you're doing the wishbone? Maybe I should be doing that. I could beat some kids asses on the wishbone. I'll end up with the biggest bone for sure. I have a good luck for the rest of the year instead Of what my life is doing now, Which is just a gray void every day. I wake up, go to the same job. Things are fine. The only excitement I get is yelling at people Who are trying to keep me safe in my community. Anyway, Matt, what do you think? Rolling well-toned, rolling bone or rolling groan? The slits. I think this is rolling groan. Should not be on the list. There's so many albums that are 501 that we keep talking about. And I just, I don't get it. And it could just be me. Could be the era, all that good stuff, But I don't know how this is on the list. So rolling groaned. The slits are on my lips. There's something there. Russell, what do you think? Rolling well-toned, rolling bone or rolling groan? Oh my God. Yeah, I'm with Matt. I said earlier, I don't get why this is on the list.
[1:19:00]Obviously, we're missing something here That other people are seeing. But yeah, I don't understand this at all. Even if I scroll down, there's a lot of bands that we don't, That I don't know, but just looking at some of the ones That we're scrolling down the list. 321 Matt, Lana Del Rey, Norman fucking Rockwell. I know a lot. That you're going to take a- I'm going to jump all the way down to 495. I was thinking about this band last time Because I was thinking, looking for acapella songs. Boys to Men. Boys to Men too. You're telling me this album is better Than anything Boys to Men ever did. We got to stop. Someone's got to, someone's got to speak truth to power Until rolling stone. There's a reason your magazines aren't out anymore. It's because you do shit like this. It makes no sense. If you went to a funeral home And all they had were the slits and no Boys to Men, You'd be bummed. You know what I mean? Like, hey, do you want a Ping Pong affair? Although Rob, I will say, good college vibe album.
[1:20:00]It might be. Scary college vibe album. I, Aaron, did you rate it? No, but no one needs to hear me say That I agree with you guys. Growing, grown, I'm not, I don't get it. But I'm sure- I'll explain the system again. Like trans out there who live the slits, that's great. It's not our thing. Let's move on. Did you listen to it in your house, Aaron, or no? Yes, yeah. Any comments from your lady on this one? Yeah, I don't think she enjoyed it. It was one of those What the hell are you listening to moments? And then, yeah, kind of just like a shake of the head And walk away. Unfortunately, you guys are getting correct. This gets a Grammy nomination. Nomination? Yeah. Now they start doing best album covers. What? Okay, this one would have been an absolute shoe in. Okay, I was listening to this at school And I had to like keep the phone in my pocket Because I could point out to look at it And not remembering what the album cover was. Next week, what do the school nurse
[1:21:00]During the Lies Outbreak and Scott Stevens have in common? Well played for the New Jersey Devils. Offside trap. Check your head. What? God damn it, Aaron, that was so good. Check your head. Check your head. When you want to hear about the greatest albums Of all time. Top three PC boys song. Next week. But you're just so lazy to look it up online. Brass monkey is out. If you want to hear from guys who chat And then they get off track. I've got the perfect podcast for you, Jack. Back did it better. Russell, this Thanksgiving, Do you know what I'm thankful for? Dirty grandpa? Oh, no, wrong one. Shit. Yes, Russell, I'm thankful for dirty grandpa. You know, I'm like 10 years away From being dirty grandpa, by the way.
[1:22:00]I'm gonna embrace that. Wow, yeah, you're right there. Yeah, something to think about. Well guys, we did it. We did a double, and guess what's over, Aaron? What's over? What's over? The slits? Ladies night. Oh, so sad. No more ladies night, we're back. And in fact, we end the ladies night with who? The Beastie Boys. Always right back. Something to think about.
