Jimi Hendrix: Electric Ladyland (1968)
[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by
[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a tech chain that celebrated the music excoriated the
[00:09]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research
[00:14]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy back did it better
[00:20]this is album 53 this is jimmy hendrix's final studio album it's a double album electric ladyland
[00:27]and let's guys i i uh you know last week aaron talked a little bit about a problem he's having
[00:33]and it turns out that that's one of the new hit songs of the summer the summer of course is
[00:38]wrapping up and everybody's sad about that some people have to go back to work it's kind of a
[00:41]bummer and it's even more of a bummer because some people don't feel bad about certain people
[00:44]having to go back to work and it's almost i think schadenfreude is the word you're looking for
[00:48]yeah i know that guy too but it's not what i'm talking about uh all right let's listen to the
[00:55]hit song of the end of the summer
[00:57]what's up everybody welcome to k-rob k-r-o-b listen last week we were talking to aaron and
[01:04]he said the biggest problem in his life is that his burgers are way too small well this is a song
[01:10]to aaron and his small meat
[01:12]well then aaron am i and i can tell no lies my meat is the wrong size
[01:25]my meat is the
[01:27]size oh yeah it's the wrong size
[01:31]it happens smaller buns oh my meat so
[01:36]i make the subtext text there
[01:42]well i'm cooking burgers on the fire and i'm looking at the size of my tiny meat
[01:53]oh no
[01:55]i'll know i'm up on size i tried to shape
[01:57]that meat of mine but my meat is too tiny
[02:01]my meat is tiny
[02:07]i think i made the meat into the right size one that'll make my wife finally smile
[02:18]oh
[02:19]it's always off by an inch or two but it looks so tiny when i show you
[02:27]will you hear those drums at the end of that
[02:31]goes right into it
[02:34]was that were that for those drums or was that aaron's wife running away from him in the
[02:40]background when she heard that
[02:41]i have a second whole verse about the wife's buns
[02:46]beck did it better welcome everybody to beck did it better the home of a 41 year old man who still
[02:55]thinks a song about aaron's tiny meat is the height of comedy there's no doubt about that
[02:59]uh we've got three guys we've actually got three guys here who loved chuck berry's cover of a jimmy
[03:05]hendricks song called doo-doo child doo-doo child there we go i've got matt minneapolis matt how
[03:10]are you doing excellent rob thanks for having me i've got russell in minnesota russell how are you
[03:15]doing rob i know everyone listening to this podcast is ready for you to show us all your long
[03:20]long long hot summer night
[03:25]and i've also got aaron here who kept texting us that picture of jimmy hendricks's plaster
[03:30]of paris mold of his penis have you guys seen that and he kept texting it to us saying oh this is so
[03:36]cool and then he wanted to trade us a receiver for a 3d printer so i don't know what that's about
[03:40]aaron in california how are you doing aaron long setup long setup rob as long as you're doing
[03:44]quotables i just want to let you know that i'll make love to you in your sleep and lord knows
[03:47]you won't feel no pain let's go oh actually i'll you know what i'll take it it's better than what
[03:54]i've been getting here at the cabin you guys might not realize it but when we're recording this
[03:58]there is an nfl game this week what does that blow your mind there is there is a national
[04:04]football league game this week so we decided that we are going to have a draft another draft yes
[04:11]we are going to be drafting uh rolling stone magazine came out with their top 100 music videos
[04:24]of all time matt almost threw just a shit fit of a tantrum when you said new list
[04:28]he's done he's done shoving that back down all right so we are going to do a draft here of our
[04:38]favorite music videos of all time we are going to do a snake draft music videos music videos yeah
[04:46]okay why oh did i text you guys the wrong thing are you saying no i'm good are you
[04:54]are you going to pick like charlie bit my finger you're like oh no i just picked regular youtube
[04:57]videos this is a disaster no i was i was going with the whole bit of where we'd act like it was
[05:01]something impromptu and not a stage oh that's right we've been working on our improv okay yes
[05:06]i'm sorry but you guys okay i'm gonna go kittens inspired by kittens please yes my first one uh i'm
[05:12]gonna go with that that video where i thought i was ever seen it russell i thought i was taking a
[05:18]cock shot but instead it was on a video and then it's me crying and saying oh wait how do i push
[05:21]record uh it's not a good idea i'm gonna go with that video where i thought i was taking a cock shot
[05:24]not called a cock shot though what am i trying to say russell what's it called oh a sext that's
[05:29]what i'm thinking a sext but for me it's just a cock i'm like no set of records
[05:35]this is that's like this is the portion of the grays okay this is a portion of uh this is the
[05:41]portion of the show your mom's not in your recording studio right now yet she is not but
[05:46]she may be coming in to lie down a little bit so i she told me that she said oh it's no big deal
[05:50]and i was like actually it is quite a big deal thinking about what we're going to be getting
[05:54]to especially with the videos that i have picked for this segment because a lot of them are about
[05:57]me being in junior high okay so we're going to do a snake draft okay which of course was my nickname
[06:04]in uh my sophomore year of college uh it's how long is the snake the snake is going to be we're
[06:10]going to do four rounds we're going to start with me to matt to russ to aaron and then back aaron
[06:15]to russ to matt to me so i am going to start off my draft there we go
[06:24]very softly in the background okay all right so now i do the part where i where do they put all my
[06:30]draft picks ah here we go with the first pick in the nfl music god damn it rob in the beck did it
[06:40]better music draft i am going to take music video draft music video draft i am going to take
[06:47]i gotta take november rain i think that was mine
[06:54]that was mine it's got that's horrible it's got two guitar solos it's got slash it's got
[06:58]a woman who is attractive where if i really was concentrated i could probably get it done during
[07:03]that time and it also has a guy jumping into a cake okay it's just like three of my fetishes
[07:08]including slash which i have to explain to my wife over and over put on the hat put on the wig
[07:13]act sexy doesn't it also have a wedding and a funeral like isn't that every dude's dream get
[07:20]married have the greatest day of your life and then you get to go out and find a new woman a
[07:23]few years later and then you get to go out and find a new woman a few years later and then you
[07:24]get to go out and find a new woman a few years later and then you get to go out and find a new woman
[07:24]when she kicks the bucket that's what i tell my wife every day and she hates it especially
[07:29]awkward when i was down at your family's place the other weekend all right matt with the second
[07:34]pick what are you what music video are you taking well now you threw me all uh i'm gonna go with uh
[07:38]sabotage by beastie isn't that kind of a parody of like an old like uh
[07:45]cop show or something like that they're sliding across uh hoods and stuff like that yep
[07:49]oh geez all right so now
[07:54]i've got russell with a third pick russell what are you gonna pick in the draft third pick i gotta
[07:59]be honest with you guys rob mentioned we were gonna do this i don't think i've seen a music
[08:02]video outside of the years between 1992 and 1997 or 98 i've never seen another music video in my
[08:09]life so i am really limited to about a six to seven year span but i'm gonna kind of go in the
[08:15]same years that you guys were talking about i'm gonna take the house of pain jump around that
[08:21]music video is badass it created like the whole thing and i'm gonna take the house of pain jump
[08:24]around that music video and i'm gonna pull everyone the mosh pit jumping around for for
[08:27]like a dance thing i'm going house of pain jump around yes okay i'm i'm actually gonna pull up
[08:33]jump around i gotta see this video there's like a weird funeral thing going on at the beginning
[08:37]there's like the bum bum bum and then you've got everlast or whatever the guy's name is in the
[08:43]middle wrapping wearing the the celtics jersey it's just the cream of the crop i rise to the top
[08:49]yes yes everlast turns out to be a very thoughtful guy
[08:54]who knows a ton about hip-hop i listened to a very long interview with him on joe rogan a couple
[08:59]times too yeah he's a really thoughtful guy i think he smokes a lot of weed but
[09:03]yeah i agree with a lot of the stuff joe rogan says i think joe grogan is a lot of great ideas
[09:08]i agree now damn it i i said tell him carly's but tell i mean carly's crushing the world
[09:14]old school video and then all of a sudden all these guys are in this bar just jumping around
[09:24]drunk having fun house of pain this is one of the best classic this do you think this this
[09:30]singly made people like celtics fans in their life is watching these house of pain videos
[09:34]no no what i don't think so you know what it made me think of though this week like
[09:39]no i got a better one this made me think about how dancing at weddings is a young man's game
[09:47]like if i were to go to a wedding now and try to do the jump around house of pain or to go to like
[09:52]the like a club and dance and jump around for four minutes i would have uh there would be a medical
[09:59]a medical emergency that would go on with that there's no way i could do that anymore
[10:03]like when you were younger you would do that that was a a common dance at wherever you went right
[10:08]oh oh jump when when that song came on it was like yes in the first 30 seconds you're like
[10:13]when jump around jump around there for 30 seconds you're like okay i actually have to go like yeah
[10:17]i'm gonna head to the bar i gotta take a little break right now yeah well that's why the first
[10:22]dance at my wedding was slammed by onyx it caused all sorts of problems my mom got seriously injured
[10:26]well there goes my second round draft pick but thanks anyways asshole aaron to the fourth pick
[10:31]you think i'm kidding look at this you can see it i got a list on my phone it's on there you
[10:35]can still say slam i'll edit out where i said it wink aaron what do you want all right well i gotta
[10:42]go i'm gonna go back up to the raiders of the draft you have no idea what's coming here
[10:46]duty
[10:48]okay there's this
[10:52]guy from jamaica he runs a 9.5 second hundred i'm gonna draft him as a wide receiver i'm going
[10:57]back to the vh1 days to watch these videos i'm gonna kick your ass this is the first
[11:02]video that i can remember watching watch this one with my mom and i said to her mom
[11:07]that tina turner has nice legs so i gotta go with what's love got to do with it by tina turner that
[11:12]is my first video memory watch that one on vh1 with my with my mom back in the day okay and i
[11:17]was wrong wait a minute can i ask you what did your mom say when you said
[11:22]tina turner has nice legs i think she said i was right i mean i what else what else would you say
[11:27]it's an empirical question she does it's true let's let's see okay here we go also her hair
[11:33]in this one yeah there it is it's the second one down her hair in this one is bowie-esque it's
[11:38]incredible are we a tina turner podcast now like is that what we are i mean why wouldn't we be we
[11:44]should be after watching the the documentary on hbo i think it was amazing
[11:48]it's like just a
[11:52]she's walking i think that's roosevelt island for real kidding
[11:58]but the thin tie i love the guy in the thin tie by the way i started all these
[12:05]videos at 30 seconds if any of you sick
[12:06]yeah i mean the song's so good so some of this british see the legs coming up out of the subway
[12:21]clinch essential
[12:22]new york shot let's hear it matt i'm with aaron i would love to have sex with tina turner what
[12:26]are we gonna say man wrote the song came out with this really horrible pop version of it
[12:30]right and so she's over there she's trying to figure out her career she can't get a foothold
[12:35]after all the ike and tina stuff it's been six seven years she's over in england trying to come
[12:40]up with a new kind of shtick if you will and this group comes and she's like this is a horrible song
[12:46]this is just a horrible song and they so they basically said well sing it like you would sing
[12:51]it
[12:52]so then she basically came out with this version of it and it is what it is today selling 30 million
[12:57]records and yada yada yada you know one of the best songs of the 80s unstoppable it helps when
[13:02]your voice is probably one of the best voices of all time like legit i don't think she gets talked
[13:06]about enough with best female voices ever but when she sings you sit up and listen like it's crazy
[13:11]rosie you got the next pick you've got the fifth pick you already have what's love got to do with
[13:15]it oh we got we're not going worse to first every round it's a oh no it's a snake yeah
[13:22]i'm going to skip forward a few years to another video that made me feel a little bit uncomfortable
[13:26]in mixed company and this is janet jackson's anytime anyplace this one is basically soft porn
[13:32]it is a great song but um it's all about janet and her neighbor down the hall and their their
[13:39]dalliances and it's a it's it's steamy it's a steamy video this one was uh actually in my mind
[13:45]as a young as a young kid could you define the word dalliance aaron i've never heard this term
[13:49]i mean it's them you know getting to know you
[13:52]a little bit oh i think it's a kind of deserted old country buffet yellow stuff with whipped cream
[13:57]on top that little powder on top oh this is reminding me janet jackson made me super horny
[14:07]forgot about this it's a great song and then kendrick sampled it too yeah it's a great great
[14:14]track and yeah it's just a lot of like wayward glances and then all of a sudden oh their clothes
[14:19]are off here we go this is mtv at four in the afternoon
[14:22]okay so go to 53 seconds of this video and it's probably the greatest thing i've seen in a long
[14:26]time aaron you automatically win the draft can i just say this guys
[14:30]wait a minute wait a minute can i just say aaron that when i'm watching janet jackson get undressed
[14:38]in an apartment and then hearing your voice in the background that doesn't give me conflicting
[14:42]emotions at all that actually yeah so i'm actually gonna have to take aaron's audio track and play
[14:48]that at night when your wife and i are so excited to see you in the future
[14:52]separated and i have some time by myself uh with the high speed internet connection all right i've
[14:57]got russell with the sixth pick russell you already have taken i can't remember oh a house
[15:03]of pain jump around which is a which i can't believe you jerked into that video but uh russell
[15:08]what was what was your next pick oh well now uh now i gotta watch what i'm gonna take here if this
[15:12]is the way we're going no no no no no we can't i'll do the same joke no i'll take this one then
[15:18]i'm gonna take sir mix a lot baby
[15:22]got back there's the crazy intro where they're talking about look at her butt it's so big but
[15:27]then finally when they hit becky when they look at her butt it's so big becky and then all of a
[15:32]sudden they what are those rap guys they show sir mix a lot rapping and then they span out
[15:37]and he's just rapping on mountains that look like big butts and like what a clever concept
[15:43]i'm going sir mix a lot baby got back this is the greatest opening line of any song ever
[15:48]russell what is it what is the greatest what is the opening line of the song man
[15:52]um let me pull it up let me see are we talking oh my god becky look at her butt or are we talking
[15:58]becky look at her not that part or i like big butts i cannot it's funny too because this video
[16:05]came out like 90s right yeah early 90s here we go here we go did big did sir mix a lot start this
[16:13]i mean her butt it's just so sick there it is and even by today's standards it's not that big
[16:19]out there i mean
[16:22]okay i am looking
[16:26]that's only one butt it's two cheeks yeah
[16:43]if people don't pull up the video look at the background he's standing on this butt and it
[16:52]was like a piece of blue paper as the background like and drew some clouds on it is the cheapest
[16:57]looking you can tell in the history of music videos you can tell they're like oh man we got
[17:02]this huge ass that you can stand on sir mix a lot what should we put the background he's like
[17:05]who cares nobody cares can you imagine like the set designer guy like wait you want what
[17:10]wait the best three butts and a what and they're gonna be doing what and what's the song what
[17:15]the other great part of this video is when they show the various fruits that look like butts
[17:20]you guys remember that they show like the
[17:22]i gotta try to i'm gonna i'll edit this out so don't say anything funny right now but just wait
[17:26]i gotta show you the part where they're showing the fruits because it shows like a tomato okay
[17:31]so first of all he's in he's sitting in the butt now yes he's just sitting like in the crevice
[17:36]where is it you might have to watch this whole video guys i'm not lying
[17:39]russell you might have won this draft with this pick i had forgotten how great this video was
[17:44]oh and he has a huge mix a lot it looks like a simpsons episode and then there's also the yes
[17:52]i just found the fruit part okay 128 i'm sorry
[17:55]so somebody was like okay we need to find a bunch of fruits and vegetables that also look like butts
[18:09]and then it also has the white guy's got to shout where the white guy grabs his collar and goes
[18:12]i used to do that all the time to express my disdain with certain things that's a great pick
[18:18]russell uh matt what is your second pick
[18:22]sabotage i don't know i'm gonna follow that up that's a pretty good one again i'm going to the
[18:27]list that had that in had influence on me not so much this whatever this top 100 list is because
[18:32]i'm sure there's uh dire straits and things like that michael jackson's probably like a top 10 or
[18:37]something so i was gonna say that you know my era the grunge era had horrible videos jeremy
[18:44]horrible video black hole son horrible video what's no black hole losing my religion horrible
[18:50]video i mean even a worse
[18:52]i mean like you're watching like the most depressing thing in the world like jeremy's
[18:57]about a guy who goes to school and shoots everybody up like okay great you know losing
[19:02]my religion is literally just this guy who's like crying in a corner about something i don't know
[19:07]black hole son is just creeps me out well all these songs like are dark and creepy right
[19:13]so i was gonna pick because they is essentially just a live concert the song alive by pearl
[19:21]jay
[19:22]uh as my number two video i loved that video eddie vetter's jumping off speakers and stuff
[19:28]from second stage and so it's just it's a essentially recorded at a concert so that's
[19:33]why i think i like it but all all these other grunge videos are horrible i can't think of a
[19:37]good one so if you if our listeners can think of a good grunge video text into the becks line right
[19:44]rob yes absolutely and i will say i'm not going to pick it but i think black hole son should be
[19:49]on somebody's list it's a very very good video
[19:52]let's watch a live we could take this one off the board that's then what do you think of the
[19:56]nirvana smells like teen spirit matt that's one of the most famous ones yeah and i kind of didn't
[20:02]want to go with that one because of it's probably going to be like number top five i guess for
[20:08]videos of all times and so it's kind of an obvious one and i don't know that's the only reason i
[20:13]didn't pick it for my list you know like they say on the internet uh i had a hard time masturbating
[20:18]to this you guys ever see that maybe we're on different
[20:22]networks of the internet but yeah this video is just pearl jam i noticed that eddie vetter is not
[20:26]sitting on a giant butt in this video so that's therefore i'm going to give this video a c minus
[20:29]the video i'm going to pick
[20:34]uh is creep by tlc that's a good one yeah no no no waterfalls was like
[20:44]radio head even better no no no no creep in the dance actually depressing wait a minute
[20:52]meanwhile like i'm a winner could you could you imagine rob sitting in his basement with no one
[21:01]down there listening to radio head creep while he's he's taking care of business oh and it's like
[21:06]i lowered that's my my my parents got me that shirt that said i lowered my sweatpants for this
[21:10]i lowered my sweatpants for this can we make that shirt on the back it says
[21:17]on the front it says beck did it better on the back it says i lowered my sweatpants for this
[21:21]question mark
[21:22]and then it's a picture of sir mince a lot sitting on a butt cheek
[21:24]i mean tlc to me this i i know i've joked about like jerking it to videos before this i'm not
[21:37]joking look at these big satin pajamas they're wearing like these big hammer pants look like
[21:44]skinny jeans these satin pajamas they're wearing in this are huge there's an excellent deleted
[21:50]scene from the show atlanta where the
[21:52]the guys from atlanta put on the sub pjs and do this dance it's amazing i would have because the
[21:57]problem with this video is is that like you were like okay the video is four minutes and 24 seconds
[22:01]long that's not a problem she's wearing your satin pajamas rob that's maybe why you liked it they're
[22:06]big and baggy but then the problem is it was intercut with just pictures of a trumpet so then
[22:11]when i would go to band class the next day it evoked all sorts of emotion i didn't know that
[22:14]i wanted to have all right so i also have the next pick and i'm not trying to go on any sort of uh
[22:22]theme here okay although who would have guessed that this is the theme that would turn to do with
[22:26]me we'll see in the podcast imagine that the next video that i'm going to pick my third one
[22:31]is christina aguilera uh pink lil kim oh my god i think my mom's coming in ladies night oh no
[22:38]lock the door can't let my mom see this this was lady marmalade from the moulin rouge soundtrack
[22:46]this video was
[22:52]i was like if i go to middle school the next day i'd be like why aren't girls here wearing
[23:00]corsets you know what i mean corsets just body suits let me look at that i like how this podcast
[23:08]is just a bunch of us saying look at that guys go to 30 seconds in all these videos let's see
[23:12]exactly what we're seeing you sick freaks out there visual jokes we should have we should do
[23:18]one of those those shows you guys probably see them on youtube where people watch new
[23:22]new songs or new videos and they just show the person in the corner watching it like if you
[23:27]imagine watching rob watch tlc and lady marmalade or whatever this song is yeah it would just be a
[23:34]dick thing i've seen both pink and christina aguilera live at separate events they put on
[23:39]the show uh probably christina i don't know pink i think pink was better yeah i think pink was
[23:46]better i saw her open for jt and i saw her by herself once too okay so i paused the
[23:52]video at a certain point i thought my mom was coming in don't worry it was just my kid
[23:54]seeing the picture that we're looking at now oh you continue matt what's your next pick for a video
[24:00]uh matt by the way sabotage and then jeremy okay so what's your next video alive he picked a lot
[24:09]i was gonna go with uh again only because it was in my youth and i saw it
[24:16]like four times a day for months on end but i was gonna go with uh gin and juice
[24:22]oh shoot yeah it's interesting matt you talk about gin and juice i is that the one where the
[24:28]dad leaves and he comes home at the end of the party and kicks everyone out or not
[24:31]yeah i think so i think so i was thinking of dray day i thought i thought dray is the
[24:37]one i think of more more often or more than gin and juice
[24:40]which is the one where they open the fridge and all the 40s are in there
[24:45]that's what i'm thinking of i think that's dray day with the fridge in the 40s right
[24:49]no gin and juice what
[24:52]gin and juice the one the dad leaves at the beginning they go out kind of have fun
[24:55]and then they come back and the dad is like everyone get the fuck out of my house
[24:59]also the beginning of this they show snoop dogg is sitting or dray or snoop is sitting in the
[25:08]bathroom taking a shit and like i don't know why they have to spend eight seconds with them in the
[25:13]bathroom before that all right the pick the pittsburgh penguins jersey he's like you gotta
[25:19]gotta show me taking a shit
[25:22]the money for this video is going to go to my ex-wife for
[25:24]payments for the rest of my life please
[25:26]no yeah this one's a classic
[25:31]what jerseys you wearing there 34 for the penguins is that a lemieux 94
[25:37]just his own year
[25:40]six in the morning all right so now i'm a little thrown off because my mom are they done watching
[25:50]olympics mom
[25:52]all right i'll head i gotta transfer i was going to talk to you guys about how much i enjoyed that
[25:56]part with about the hose in the living room getting it on but my mom's here so we're going
[25:59]to move on here i gotta move i gotta change location let her just take over she can captain
[26:03]the ship rob's gonna move to the living room she's just see what's going on in there just in
[26:09]case i've got something in my pocket i'll tell you guys about later here but even dare leave
[26:13]your computer open with your mom in the in the building where she could potentially see your
[26:19]search history or not
[26:22]good night mom
[26:22]oh hey sweetie okay so i'm just questioning a lot of choices i've made god i hope this makes it
[26:30]this has got it we gotta come up with some good jokes all this has to stay in rob do you ever like
[26:35]are you ever out with friends and you're showing them like a picture or something and they're like
[26:38]oh let me see and then you give them your phone and then you're terrified you're like oh my god
[26:41]what could be on that phone or what could they type in and what could they see
[26:44]did i clear my porn history let me let me tell you guys a story i i was recently texting a friend
[26:51]of mine i had i i was i found out that on bitmojis you can send people dirty things with bitmojis if
[26:58]you spell it wrong so i sent a friend of mine my friend suzanne i sent her a bitmoji that just said
[27:03]cunnilingus with two n's and two l's and then i sent another one that just said big balls
[27:08]well then my conservative aunt was hanging out at our place and we were looking up uh caning
[27:15]because i was bringing up the guy who got caned in singapore and so then she was looking at my
[27:18]phone for an article of caning because we wanted to see what a cane looked like and she was like
[27:21]oh no and i was like oh no she's gonna text back something super dirty with a bitmoji but it's just
[27:27]gonna pop up my aunt's gonna see it so i was like oh my god this needs to stop right now
[27:30]terrible all right russell what's your next pick i'm gonna take one that i just remember this
[27:36]i completely remember the bumblebee one i'm gonna take no rain by blind melon that's the
[27:42]one with the girl doing the audition in the bumblebee suit right yeah that's a good one
[27:46]that is a classic video i gotta take that with the third don't understand why i sleep all day
[27:51]something about blind melon and me yeah blind melon is one of the bands that i love so much i
[27:56]bought the album i know the whole album by heart it's one of my favorite albums of all time i've
[28:00]never talked about it but it's so good shannon hoon is such a talented singer and it's crazy
[28:05]because i feel like i'm the only guy in the world that is like a huge blind melon fan but if you
[28:09]listen to that album it's so fantastic and this video like his voice is absolutely incredible
[28:15]it's great yeah he died right didn't he die right around yes they had an album after this and then
[28:20]he passed away
[28:21]due to a heroin overdose this song is the crusher this video is badass i almost took this with my
[28:27]first round vic i would have been angry if anyone else would have taken it from me again though if
[28:31]you look they're doing this they're like playing out in the grass and the background looks like
[28:35]they're just standing in front of a piece of blue paper the background is terrible again it's so
[28:40]90s though isn't it like what they're wearing again like we all knew guys in high school that
[28:44]dress like this like yeah well i mean think about actually little glasses okay shirts i mean yeah
[28:51]they're tinted remind us of look at now there's a part where no rain is where blind melon is on
[28:56]student council they want to make the dance what was your what was your big student council day
[29:00]again aaron what was your dumb shit idea imagine it was a huge coup i got to i convinced them to do
[29:05]imagine as the theme for the homecoming dance and you wouldn't you can't believe how much better
[29:10]people everyone in my graduating class are they all went out and just did wonderful things to
[29:14]improve the lives of others i gotta admit that's a better theme than we had for our high school dance
[29:18]trying to finger somebody in the
[29:20]football field at midnight but
[29:22]actually our theme was dimly lit gym dimly lit gym uh russell that's a fantastic pick i didn't
[29:33]even think of that one aaron with your third i'm gonna go with my next one i'm gonna go i'm gonna
[29:38]go to tom petty and i hope i got this one right uh i'm gonna go with into the great wide open is
[29:43]that the one that has the the sort of uh flying over yep you're passing on last dance with mary
[29:48]jane that video that is a great one too no i know that was that was a tough call but i think into
[29:53]the great wide open is the one i remember watching a lot yep last dance with mary jane does aaron does
[29:58]love that one because it does involve him digging up a woman and dancing with the dead corpse but
[30:01]let's see what this video has i'm into that for us yeah it's like the scene where they're like
[30:06]hanging out over the freeway that that is that the one you're talking about i is that isn't that
[30:10]aerosmith haven't we already covered that no
[30:12]this is this what you're thinking of aaron and by the way thanks for doing all the research for
[30:19]this podcast i've only i've only put in hours getting this ready and you're like i think it's
[30:23]this tom petty video where like he plays guitar what yeah where he's telling the story yeah there
[30:28]he is yeah he's the storyteller and then there's the people acting it out and he's that he's the
[30:34]why is he dressed like the manhatter what's going on there i think he's the i think he is the
[30:39]right he's making it happen there was a video where he was literally the manhatter is this the
[30:43]one yeah or is this like a continuation oh i love this video because it's like literally he's doing
[30:51]what the song says it's so great he's like oh he's playing a guitar what's the limits
[30:58]yeah great song i like the storytelling i'll tell you what though this did to me what it
[31:06]happens every time i listen to tom petty which is i'm like
[31:09]tom petty is so good like i love to burn on tempetti because he does look like an undertaker
[31:13]somewhere that happened to pick up a guitar but he his songs are so fantastic and the fact that
[31:18]we haven't had a tom petty album yet kind of outrageous right like it's it's pretty outrageous
[31:22]uh we're on 53 so aaron that pick did suck what's your next what's your final pick of the draft what
[31:28]if you love reaches i'm gonna dig deep into the bag of um tv raps videos that i watched
[31:33]as a young kid and i i this is crazy
[31:39]the one that came to my mind was dos effects and i had to go with the first one that came to my mind
[31:44]you gotta go with your gut so dos effects mic checka that's the one that came to my mind is
[31:48]just two dudes rapping in a very dimly lit video um they have another video where they're carrying
[31:55]torches through what looks like a sort of dungeon but i always like their rhyme style and i liked
[32:00]their stocking caps and so i used to watch a lot of um tv raps late at night and dos effects is the
[32:04]one that came to me and i gotta take it finally a rap video with stocking caps i just want to say
[32:08]this is the
[32:09]second dos effects video that comes up when you search dos effects on youtube
[32:12]so that maybe makes me think that i don't know
[32:14]i mean you gotta get value where you can find it
[32:20]this was just like this is one of those things i was like oh whoa this is a rap video it's just
[32:25]dudes rapping hard at the camera wearing stocking caps that's my thing i've never seen this one
[32:31]before yeah no nobody has uh this has 200 000 views 210 000 views this is the least view that
[32:39]video of ours by one million i mean this is crazy wow what a shitty pick that i would expect no less
[32:46]this is like when aaron just took the putter in the second round they're like wait you could have
[32:52]taken the putter in the seventh round or just signed a free agent punter you guys don't know
[32:57]you never know where this is gonna go wow aaron you never failed to disappoint i love you russ
[33:02]with your final pick of the draft what are you gonna take my final pick i think there was a lot
[33:06]of good snoop dogg dr dre ones that i was considering but matt took those off the board
[33:10]so i'm gonna stay away from those ones no repeats i'm gonna take one that i thought matt would maybe
[33:16]take this is one of matt's favorite bands it's kind of in the grunge area but i think the videos
[33:21]may be a little bit weird a little bit different i'm gonna take tonight tonight by the smashing
[33:26]pumpkins you guys remember that one oh i don't know the video it's kind of like a little cartoonish
[33:32]it's a little not cartoonish but it's kind of got a weird vibe to it right it's the one
[33:36]where they crash in the moon it's a it's a thing yeah it's like the theme of the album if you know
[33:41]what the album cover looks looks like kind of weaves it together there yeah i like weird vibes
[33:46]again disarm that's another one that falls in just a horrible grunge video russell can i ask
[33:52]you a question real quick does this video have uh them sitting on a giant butt no does this video
[33:59]have two guys rapping with uh stocking caps on well let's by the way this might be weirder
[34:06]just to give somebody an idea this video has 68 million views
[34:09]it's like you're at the world's fair or something there's something weird going on then there's
[34:16]weird cartoons you got billy corgan or whatever his name is wearing the the tuxedo and the top
[34:21]hat standing in the clouds this is just a killer i love this video i thought this was so great
[34:26]yeah there it is the moon it's kind of like wes anderson-esque in a way matt what do you think
[34:32]yeah i i like this it wasn't really drawn to the video i think it's just so overdone not in a bad
[34:42]way though i mean it's good i i agree with you that it's good it just wasn't something that i
[34:45]but even the song it's not it's like a top 20 smashing pumpkin song for me not a top 10
[34:52]if you will so i don't know so yeah i agree with matt not enough guys with stocking caps
[34:58]rapping in that one matt what is your pick for the next uh for the next
[35:02]it's very hard to pick one and last one right um
[35:06]here um i was gonna i've got so many other videos that i could throw out there but
[35:12]i don't think we can have a best video of all time about it's getting a little serious but
[35:19]it's a good song it's a lot more recent than anything else we've brought up but this is
[35:24]america by childish gambino i don't know that one oh there you go might be one of the best
[35:29]video music videos ever because it's a great song within the
[35:32]it has is a little bit this was one that when it came out we actually showed our middle school
[35:38]students when it came out and kind of analyzed what he was talking about i mean it's it's so
[35:42]heavy it's so intense to watch russell you you probably need to watch this on your own russell
[35:46]to get a true view of it but so good so even even on non-non-movie days teachers are showing movies
[35:52]these days when i'm not serving lunch i'm showing this video i don't know if you can get to the
[35:58]first part just get russell's reaction are you watching this for a while i don't know if you're
[36:02]watching russell's watching that lady marmalade video on his own computer yeah yeah there it is
[36:09]oh whoa yeah hold on hold on 45 seconds you want 45 seconds yeah this is what it's probably here's
[36:20]the essence for russell oh yeah i don't like this i mean it was like a it's it's it's such
[36:29]an intense video it's it's crazy and by the way compared to the last one i've seen it's it's it's
[36:32]that to aaron's video this one has 788 million views compared to 210 000 so aaron goes a good
[36:39]pick still i'm telling you you gotta find value how many computers would aaron have to buy or how
[36:44]many time would he have to reset his ip address or whatever to get that rex x or whatever video
[36:50]up to 788 million there might not even be enough computers in the world for aaron to get it up
[36:55]there i'm gonna start working at it i mean at least there's not enough computers in the world
[37:00]to get for aaron to get it up my final
[37:02]video and this is not a music video but it is a video i send to anybody when we have a text
[37:06]message exchange and i don't know what else to send this is a video just on youtube it is called
[37:11]hot sauce on feet so let's just watch this real quick
[37:14]how many views does this one have rob it only has two thousand
[37:30]just for this
[37:32]and they're all robbed they're all rubs but if you send this to somebody and russell i highly
[37:38]if somebody goes hey i really had a great time i want to see you good just send them that video
[37:41]and if they respond you're in okay so russell has his head in his hands aaron has turned his
[37:49]camera off and jumped in his tent i can't see what he's doing uh this one i'm gonna pick for
[37:54]my fourth one hootie and the blowfish i only want to be with you now listen i had it on the list i
[37:58]have a lot of sexual videos but there is only one video that features
[38:02]dan marino and that is this one listen he talked about how much he loves the dolphins they make
[38:07]him cry they were in this video
[38:09]a lot of sports going on here i mean it started with sports center for god's sakes this is the
[38:20]most 90s video unfortunately it is a repeat of content from our joni mitchell album about a year
[38:27]ago where he talked about this video and dan marino starring in the video are you
[38:32]serious i have zero recollection of this you you've missed oh my gosh and he's winning a
[38:41]super bowl in this video it's a dream come true for dan marino and now they're golfing they're
[38:44]just playing all these sports what a great 90s video it's so great because hootie the blowfish
[38:48]is like hey we should just go play golf everybody's like yeah that's a great video and guess
[38:51]what i enjoyed this video enough where i picked it as my top four video of all time so uh i
[38:57]obviously won the video playoff let's look at the actual i'm going to tell you guys the top 10
[39:01]videos as rolling around the world and i'm going to tell you guys the top 10 videos as rolling around
[39:02]stones pick them michael jackson billy jean okay good video going one to ten or ten to one
[39:08]ten to one go for is ten the best or one the best ten is not the best i don't know what in what world
[39:13]ten would be the best russell that's insane that you'd even think that as you know on the rolling
[39:16]stone website it is a great website to use everybody loves it i have clicked on the
[39:20]appropriate page i am now scrolling down now don't contest as we scroll down the number goes down but
[39:25]the quality goes up and a lot of people don't realize that because they don't listen to the
[39:28]end of this podcast uh guns and roses november rain number nine great call
[39:32]great we're gonna be on the list peter gabriel sledgehammer i like oh i mean this is a big bust
[39:37]i've never even seen the video it can't be on the top if you are a vh1 head like me you saw that
[39:42]video one million times million times we got d'angelo untitled how does it feel which is just
[39:47]him and those muscles that i'll never have that i don't even think i have where it's like the
[39:50]the real cum gutters down there i don't i don't have those uh six bc boys
[39:56]hey there you go i had no idea where that would be at this point the list this is why i wanted to
[40:02]because this list is fucked after this new order the perfect kiss right what the shit i don't even
[40:08]know what the song is if the bumblebee is not on this list they just need to get rid of the stupid
[40:13]the website what is new order the perfect kiss could you guys even tell me what the song is
[40:18]i don't think so i think you're gonna see something later not later mid 90s coming up
[40:24]i think there's something that could be what the fuck is this wait a minute it says here who wrote
[40:29]this article it says aaron that's so weird
[40:32]yep it's into my moonlighting game for writing a terrible magazine childish gambino this is
[40:40]america oh hey job oh madonna vogue yeah this that has to be on the list that's probably a
[40:47]whiff by all of us if you go if you're at a if you were ever at the the bar or you ever had a
[40:52]wedding and a madonna song comes on it doesn't have to be vogue but this is that's how you do
[40:56]the dance you do all the hand anyway here's johnny cash hurt at no this i love the song
[41:02]it's not as the video second video i like the video but i think number two all time is that's
[41:09]really grown and i'm a huge johnny cash well i'm just reading what they say there basically i put
[41:13]it because it's all accidental this is the last time he's ever recorded in videos that's why
[41:18]they're it was very hard to masturbate to this thank you i love how rolling stone and rolling
[41:24]stone's infinite wisdom they're like oh rolling johnny cash should only have one album on the
[41:29]list and it should be like in the 300s but we're gonna put this stupid video up as the second
[41:34]greatest video like it just got an ass back literally it looks like he's one foot in the
[41:39]grave yeah and at number one and this blows my mind is no rain by blind melon i can't
[41:45]i was lying i'm just kidding
[41:49]it's hot sauce on feet uh no it is i was gonna ask if you could take lemonade in its entirety
[41:58]yeah i was gonna see if you could take lemonade in it
[41:59]its entirety but failing that yeah this one's got to be number one this is what the cop car is
[42:04]sinking in new orleans this is incredible and the head nods and the black hats
[42:09]it is a good video but it doesn't have somebody in a bumblebee and well beyonce is sitting on a
[42:18]giant ass for part of that video but i gotta say i don't know about that so everybody that was our
[42:22]that was our music video draft if you're still listening congratulations i think it legit went
[42:28]longer than the nfl draft
[42:29]thank you guys for saying but it did not go longer than our our fantasy football drafts
[42:37]from 2000 until like two years ago and we sped it up yeah yeah no which which which second tight
[42:44]end am i taking that i'm gonna cut immediately can i get out of that league yet is it is it too
[42:48]late to bail on that you have to you have to get out you have to get out by may no you missed it
[42:54]by two what's really fun is when you've gotten kicked out of that league once for not paying
[42:56]and then when you won nobody paid you it really feels satisfying that's probably my
[42:59]favorite part of being in that league i love it all right let's get to nobody's favorite part
[43:04]getting into the album let's talk about the music for nobody's favorite part of the show
[43:10]let's talk about the album you just said that oh yeah it's almost like i can't think of a lot
[43:15]of funny things to say about this part uh but this is electric lady land this is the only album
[43:20]produced by hendrix and it's so funny because he produced it and then at the end he took so long
[43:25]being a perfectionist with the song that he didn't have time to do a final master so he hated the way
[43:29]when it came out he thought it was way too muddy he thought it was way too much bass you know how
[43:34]there's in some songs there's those 3d sound effects where it's going back and forth a lot
[43:38]of the guys who mixed who mastered it thought that it was a mistake so they just took it out
[43:42]he was like what the fuck don't do that um this album spent two weeks at number one uh uh redding
[43:49]his bass player that we talked about before had his own band called fat mattress okay was who's
[43:53]i actually that was my nickname my sophomore year of college but uh so he wasn't there a lot so jimmy
[43:59]was the bass player he uh because hendrix was in charge of it he would just invite tons and tons
[44:04]of people in the studio so the manager actually quit because of that there were just tons of
[44:09]people sitting in the studio while they're recording and at the time no writing's like
[44:13]yeah you couldn't even move it was like a party and we're sitting here trying to record these songs
[44:16]which i think lends itself to this a little bit looser feel of this album and then the cover of
[44:21]this album i think goes down as one of the worst covers that we've seen yet it's i think it's
[44:25]absolutely terrible it doesn't sum up this album at all and the thing was is that hendrix
[44:29]wanted linda mccartney to take a picture of him and a bunch of kids sitting around a statue in
[44:35]new york city and the inside of the have you guys ever seen the inside album cover of this the inside
[44:40]art no what is it it's just 19 nude women sitting around and he was like i didn't ask for that but
[44:49]it's pretty cool he's like it's actually worked out pretty well and it's not like them covering
[44:53]themselves up it's like straight up nude women sitting around okay uh and i just realized i was
[44:59]so i'll probably see you guys later because i'm gonna have a lot more time to do this podcast in
[45:03]the upcoming years so let's get into this is it tastefully done uh yeah i would say so although
[45:09]all new it was a fish what do you think aaron tastefully done yeah because it's important not
[45:17]as much to be as much pissing as aaron likes i haven't seen it but i'm just now i'm going down
[45:22]the air no one's gonna make it through this part anyways it don't matter hey i want to really hear
[45:29]the music picks or the video picks wow rob picked hot sauce on feet what a big surprise
[45:33]all right so let's get into electric lady land and the gods made love for the first song
[45:40]do you guys hear that back and forth in the this is uh i know jimmy hendrix is a music god
[45:49]this is an abomination of an intro for an album to me i thought it was horrible so he kind of is
[45:55]doing these sonic paintings on some of these songs where he's just kind of experimenting with it and
[45:59]kind of said okay make your own album and he's like i'm gonna put this on the album they're like
[46:02]shit we're making this i mean this should not be a double album i think we can probably all agree
[46:06]to that but he did say i know everybody's going to criticize this song so i put it first to get
[46:10]it out of the way so nobody thinks about it so russ he knew what you were going to do jimmy
[46:14]hendrix could see in the future and he got you that's what i always talk about on my dates i
[46:18]talk about the worst parts about me at the beginning and hope if i can just get past that
[46:21]i'm going to be gold well the thing is i don't like going to my neighborhood night out because
[46:25]i don't want to be around people i would love to think that that's the worst part of you is that
[46:29]you go to your neighbor day hey my name is russ i have a great penis hi how are you doing uh all
[46:34]right oh wait no that's my bit that i have that uh all right have you ever been parentheses do
[46:39]electric lady land and this is where he's just tossing off little licks just like no problem
[46:50]i mean the jazzy nature of it you know a bunch of these songs is phenomenal
[46:55]yeah i gotta say the text that matt sent today
[46:59]i thought was so perfect of why did we have a jimmy hendrix album before this one i mean this
[47:04]really is like the quintessential like if you want to peg down to jimmy hendrix song i think
[47:09]are you experienced was him trying to be fit into a box with like the beatles or like the yardbirds
[47:13]or something like that this is him just being like okay guess what you're a guitar god let's
[47:17]hear what you can do and it there's so many different styles on this and it sounds so cool
[47:21]i i was he just i mean like voodoo child coming up it's just like he's a blues man i think first
[47:28]and foremost but he's going to play you the blues from saturn or somewhere else in the galaxy
[47:33]and this seems to be the album where you get to do that the most now we have crosstown traffic
[47:39]i love the left or right fade on this one too yeah this is a an absolute must have to have
[47:49]headphones in for this song right both of them russell you both
[47:52]sorry
[47:54]you
[47:58]just want to get a little singing here also take you take our listeners behind the scenes
[48:03]i may or may not have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best songs featuring the kazoo
[48:08]and there are not many at all give it what's one what's one good song featuring the kazoo
[48:14]i don't know i even deleted them from my notes that's how bad the list was it was bad
[48:18]i love that idea he actually made his own kazoo for that song out of a comb
[48:24]and then on the thing it said cellophane but i was like you can't make a kazoo out of a
[48:27]comb and cellophane they must mean wax paper right like you can't do it a cellophane can you
[48:31]aaron you use cellophane as condoms do you think you could could you pull some out right now and
[48:36]use that remember in class they're always like don't use cellophane as a condom and i was like
[48:41]shit i gotta try that that's a great idea because then you go buy condoms and you're
[48:46]like they're so expensive it's so big right rob it's so big so big like i was like really you
[48:52]need a big somebody needs a bigger condom than this that's wild like i'd put it all the way
[48:57]down and i'd still be like super yellow at the bottom because i'd have all that extra
[49:01]i was like what how much do i need
[49:05]russell apparently there's a uh blind melon song that has zoo in it called skinned
[49:14]it's not on that album it's a different album oh how's the video it's a really good stop it's
[49:20]it's eighth on the list actually oh i think i don't know if i did that voodoo child
[49:27]so this yeah this is a slow blues then he's just gonna go to space this was a jam he would go from
[49:35]his recording studio in new york around the corner to a place called the sea and he was jamming with
[49:42]these guys late at night and he was like this fucking rocks let's go back to the studio and
[49:46]record this and then they put it on the album what i got out of this is i loved i i was like why would
[49:50]they put so much organ on a song like this now it is a seven and a half minute song but it's cool to
[49:57]play with these other musicians i i enjoyed that this is seven and a half or 15. it's 15 minutes
[50:04]yeah it's like a oh sorry i missed i meant okay let me uh that's a 15 minute song and i want you
[50:11]guys to check out the video for it's called hot sauce on feet i think it's really interesting you
[50:14]guys should check that out and is this the one is steve is this one is steve winwood playing an organ
[50:19]on this one i looked it up i believe it's the hammond organ should have written down the hammond
[50:22]organ oh i love you guys know i love the hammond that's so weird that steve winwood wouldn't play
[50:27]woodwinds but who would win if steve winwood played a woodwind you know what i mean it's one
[50:32]of those questions we'd all win if steve winwood would play a woodwind that wasn't that wasn't
[50:36]okay so moving that's my new bit is i'm going to shut down everybody by the way if you just
[50:42]ever need like a station like if you're putting in like i just need some music you know like pop
[50:47]whatever put in steve winwood station on a alexa or something like that that you're going to have
[50:53]great music for a long time really has there been anyone in the history of the
[50:57]world other than matt who's ever done the search for the steve winwood station
[51:01]oh for sure you think he's like he's like the perfect mix between like adult contemporary
[51:06]and like yacht rock and it just goes and that that genre goes on forever i can tell you after
[51:12]this there's going to be at least two other people that are going to go do that on their alexa right
[51:15]after this i gotta say i do love are you guys do you guys jam on pandora pandora is still one of my
[51:20]number one music things i love pandora i got out of it what spotify has just put pandora to shame
[51:26]you can have every song you want you don't have to wait you don't have to skip through shitty songs
[51:30]pandora is out but it doesn't it doesn't pick like new songs for you how do you guys find new songs i
[51:35]mean i know how aaron does he listens to the fucking radio but like i love pandora because
[51:39]it's got me into all these new songs that i never knew before i can't believe that's what everyone
[51:43]says they hate pandora and amazon music amazon music gets you new songs if you're just playing
[51:48]like a random yeah i know but i love that god i love pandora if you love pandora text the bex line
[51:56]i forgot if you love the apple 2 computer text the bex line hey wouldn't it be more appropriate
[52:01]to sex the bex line no don't do that eight four two two seven seven you guys don't get those
[52:07]you guys don't get those if you like rotary phones i get those i've gotten so many pictures
[52:13]of i mean pandora does have the immediate gratification pandora does have the immediate
[52:18]gratification you can hit thumbs up or thumbs down right away you can thumbs down something
[52:21]and skip i'm telling you i remember the whole new jams on pandora i just think it's so great
[52:26]all right little by the way if you love jacking off to jpeg slowly showing up on your computer
[52:33]screen text 802 you love 56k remember that shit it was like it's like oh yeah top of the mood
[52:43]top of the boob they're just like oh she's wearing a bra next all right speaking of which
[52:47]a little bit strange this was a song written by noel redding and you can tell he's like
[52:52]you know who rocks the beatles we should make a song that sounds just like them
[52:56]you guys like this one or not i did and the reason i did is that i think it has some cool
[53:01]it's not no red in singing which is coming up here i think it's incredibly but he's got three
[53:06]different guitar solos that sound so different and i picked them out for you guys listen to the
[53:10]singing i i like this one because i'm trying to figure out what he's doing is is this guitar
[53:16]overdubbed or is he playing two octaves together and i mean the thing with jimmy's guitar playing
[53:21]is like is it 10 guitars is it one guitar is it multiple tracks so i like it i think it's all i
[53:26]think it's multiple tracks as somebody who's made a number of songs it's got to be multiple
[53:29]tracks put together but the idea that jimmy hendrix would be like oh man noel redding this
[53:33]song is so good god fat mattress is such a great band can you come in and sing like that and he's
[53:36]like little bit strange he's like okay now i'm gonna add five minutes of guitar solo listen to
[53:41]this first guitar solo he plays on this just buzz just buzz up your ass yes
[53:47]this is badass but here he's harmonizing with himself right it's so cool i don't even know how
[53:56]how do you do that so then the next soul listen to this
[54:01]just a little light pluck
[54:05]right just a little like and then finally listen to the why we i know we're talking about the
[54:12]wawa pedal listen to this come in here rob do you have to pluck up and down that patchy inner thigh
[54:16]or do you shave or pluck man don't get me started about shaving in the shower this is a guitar
[54:21]i thought about shaving in the shower here in the lake and then i'm like what are they going to see
[54:26]rain like this but this this is wap he's been quoted as saying i love the wawa pedal because
[54:32]there's not real notes like it's in between notes that come out and he thought that was so cool
[54:36]yeah this song long hot summer nights
[54:40]it always i always thought this song sounded like they were recording underwater
[54:45]and doesn't he say something about a hot cold summer these lyrics make no sense
[54:50]yeah where are you in a hot cold summer i can't tell if i like the song or not there's a
[54:55]lot of noodling up and down on the guitar on this one matt you've talked before about some noodling
[55:00]on guitars what do you think of jimmy so far well it was brought up to this had a lot of noodling on
[55:05]it and i think i i think i was trying to figure out if this was one of the first kind of jam
[55:10]studio albums that's ever been out there you know with the 13 15 minutes uh songs or everybody's
[55:17]playing off each other and taking their parts you know but the the noodling there is a lot of
[55:22]noodling there's a lot of up and down up and down up and down instead of kind of
[55:25]um you know playing a bunch of different i don't know the correct term but but obviously it's jimmy
[55:30]hendrix and then he gets into he gets out of the noodling pretty darn quick and so the noodling is
[55:36]a lot of filler which i don't mind because it leads to a lot of really good soul solos on this
[55:40]album sure i'm gonna say it again if you guys want to listen to a great jimmy hendrix album
[55:44]go to your pandora and say jimmy hendrix live at the bbc it's his best album it's him live but it's
[55:50]not so much like jam band stuff do you guys agree that if this was a single album and they cut out
[55:55]some of the fluff it would be unbelievable absolutely crazy unbelievable or is this
[55:59]a good double album it works for me as a double album the because all of these these tiny moments
[56:05]where there's this fluff and then you hear something that you just i i don't know it's
[56:09]it's like when you guys listen to this podcast and then you think well we can't cut out something
[56:13]because there was a perfect joke in there and for me i i was listening that way this week and i
[56:17]would think ah this song's too long and then i would hear a tiny little riff and just go well
[56:20]that that blows anything anyone else has ever played out of the water you can't let any of that go
[56:25]i think it works as a double album but um i like the the jazz aspect of it i think he's kind of
[56:31]blowing uh pop song structures away out of you know setting them aside and he's going for more
[56:37]extended structures and taking longer solos i think um that's that's the jazz influence so for
[56:43]me it works but i like listening i just want to say that was i i and i'm honest here i think that
[56:47]was such a smart thing to say i think it's you're so like astute with your observations a lot of
[56:52]people say why the fuck is aaron on the podcast like he doesn't do anything he doesn't add
[56:55]anything but i'm gonna say that was really smart and good so nice john yeah i don't know why your
[56:59]wife keeps saying she could be at least a little more nice about it right well here's a text my
[57:05]wife has never said me come on let the good times roll this was going to be the song this time about
[57:16]hamburger roll but i love this song by the way just a straight 12 bar blues it's like yes give it to
[57:25]me yeah just a rocker but then it's jimmy playing it my favorite track on the album coming up and i
[57:34]know it's a slur we don't say it anymore we have gypsy eyes
[57:39]you can say i think i'm with you on this rob this song is just insanely ridiculous when it starts
[57:47]out it's like i've never heard anything like this before it's crazy good russell this is amazing
[57:54]this this intro reminds me so much of of black betty another song that i know you love yeah
[58:00]like this this is your kind of i can tell you what's not about that's ram jam's greatest hits
[58:06]i i want to say that this so first of all this song took 50 takes over three sessions this was
[58:14]like the song that made their manager quit he was such a perfectionist with this song
[58:18]this is also the song that i play every time when i sit down on a drum set let's go
[58:22]i'm like gypsy eyes
[58:24]all right somebody likes that but i will say listen to that song for the bass line when he's
[58:29]singing it's incredible and you know why it's incredible there's no ready is off with fat
[58:34]mattress that was jimmy hendrix on the bass playing that as he's saying it's i mean he's just
[58:38]guys i'm gonna say something here this is controversial i might need to edit this out
[58:42]jimmy hendrix is really good on guitar
[58:45]heard it here first burning on the midnight takes are hot the takes are hot tbd tbd we
[58:53]gotta get to the rankings before we
[58:54]agree to that wait till next week when we draft our favorite guitar players
[58:59]there's a little wah-wah pedal in that one right there
[59:03]so we've gone from 12 bar blues to kind of a psychedelic song jimmy hendrix claimed that was
[59:11]his favorite song and i think partially because people criticize it however do you know who sang
[59:15]background on that aaron i do not whitney houston's mom is singing on that one it was
[59:21]what inspirations right in the same kind of wow
[59:24]whatever they had people coming in and out but it was same group that sang backup for a
[59:28]on a lot of stuff right yeah wow yeah absolutely uh so rainy day now we're on to the second album
[59:36]rainy day drape dream away this is a jam i love the clear voice on this this is my favorite song
[59:42]you love this hot saps yeah it's a great song and all but it does start like with the cough
[59:54]seriously we even edit coughs out of this podcast if you have like the 53rd greatest album all time
[60:00]and the song starts with the cough you're like no it's good that's kind of bullshit isn't it
[60:05]that's a that's a all part of it i gotta agree because i think they're like we want people to
[60:09]know they're in the studio it's like yeah we're not daft punk here like we know what's going on
[60:14]we think there's somebody there i love this one i listened today i went back today and i was
[60:18]checking on miles davis's uh chronology because i i thought this this track and maybe one other
[60:24]remind me so much of or they made me think of in a silent way and bitches brew by miles davis
[60:29]and i thought jimmy was maybe influenced by miles but i think the direction of influence
[60:33]went the other way the reading of it that i could could find they definitely met one another they
[60:38]possibly jammed together it was never recorded but i think miles heard this stuff and this is
[60:45]what inspired miles to start pursuing rock fusion and and funk and i also read miles
[60:50]started using the wah-wah pedal himself because he wanted to sound more like jimmy
[60:53]and all that led up to i only want to be with you by hoodie and the blowfish i mean isn't music
[60:58]unbelievable that's why we do this podcast i like big butts and i cannot lie you know jimmy
[61:06]hendrix is in heaven playing that guitar listening to i love big butts and i cannot lie being like
[61:11]rock on man i love that idea by the way that when people die they're doing their job in heaven
[61:15]can you imagine i think he was kind of into like wafey english girls
[61:19]a merman 1983 a merman
[61:23]merman should i turn by the way this is the best defense to this should not be a double album
[61:27]here and how long is this song linked experts i don't i don't know yeah 14 minutes 14 minutes
[61:36]i love it i love i love jimmy's sci-fi high side russell you said you have a list of the best songs
[61:46]ever to mention a merman so let's hear that list right now i think this is a good time to do it
[61:50]i was thinking about doing a list about the greatest super long songs ever but i didn't
[61:55]want rob to have to download all the really long like 30 minute youtube videos to to play for you
[62:01]were mentioning jam bands i wonder where this came out compared to like indigata davida to me
[62:05]that's the ultimate jam album where it's just that was like 70 yeah okay because that was like
[62:11]just a guy in an organ being like shit man we gotta press this record right now
[62:15]yeah the part that everybody knows the beginning of all right moon
[62:20]turn the tides gently this is another little sonic painting
[62:23]someone's gotta call it out this is terrible it's a good double album
[62:29]that's aaron as paul mccarty by the way okay uh still raining still dreaming so this one he took
[62:36]that rainy daydream away and then he did two songs he's like you know what we should go back to that
[62:40]raining song chuck berry style but on the same album exactly
[62:45]let's talk about peter franklin
[62:49]yeah that guitar is talking to you rob that's spot on
[62:52]do you ever fart it sounds like a word like that's what it always reminds me of
[62:56]what was the last word you heard
[63:00]how you doing uh house burning down
[63:14]so axl f which i think we're going to get to eventually is a lot about
[63:21]vietnam and protesting that that's what this song is about
[63:24]this is
[63:29]i do love i love the guitar with the corny voices in the background it's just something about that
[63:40]with the hendrix that i just think is so great uh here's a song that you may have heard oh i don't
[63:45]know maybe every movie ever produced ever this is all along the watchtower
[63:49]oh i mean when this starts forget it like this yeah that's an opening this is one of the greatest
[63:56]songs of all time probably in the top five yeah i would put this at number two and bob dylan's
[64:01]all along the watchtower at number one i think that's probably better no like
[64:04]dylan has always said like when dylan plays this song at concert he plays the hendrix
[64:10]version that's i thought that was like an amazing amazing credit to hendrix where he's like hey
[64:15]hendrix covered my song i like the way he did it better so he plays hendrix's version that's crazy
[64:20]isn't it well he's he's 100 right because i think he is correct i didn't i was like i should look up
[64:25]that version and play in the podcast i was like no i'm not gonna bother to do that i was like maybe
[64:29]russell yeah let's just do jimmy do you guys know though the really interesting thing about this song
[64:33]is i read that jimmy hendrix only had one song that made it to the billboard hot 100 that made it to
[64:40]the top 40 one top 40 song on the hot 100 it was this song wow is that not crazy yeah he was a one
[64:47]hit wonder god i can't believe they didn't like that merman song you're right aaron technically
[64:52]he is a one hit wonder so we've talked we've talked about like whoever sang macarena the
[64:58]baja boys chumba wumba uh whoever's saying come on we've talked about one hit wonders before but
[65:04]technically jimmy's a one hit wonder and so what i thought we could do is a list of the greatest
[65:09]artists ever that are technically one hit wonders we've only had one top 40 hit oh wow
[65:17]come on chumba wumba come on chumba wumba
[65:21]chumba wumba is a lot like russell at that place in st louis where they're he's like
[65:29]i'm actually gonna have a lager drink and i'm gonna have a whiskey drink
[65:33]yeah sir you need to leave here that wasn't as long as it
[65:39]reminds me of the better times in that place so one thing i tried to do on this list is everyone
[65:44]on the list has to have an album on the top 500 so if it's a complete one hit wonder they're not
[65:49]even considered it's got to be a legit band legit artists that would shock you that they only had
[65:54]one technical hit come on chumba wumba still holding out before we go into like these one
[66:00]hit wonders though i wanted to see if you guys could guess who has had the most 40 top 40 hits
[66:05]of all time and it's a recent artist within the last famous within the last year and a half years
[66:09]in the last 10 years here uh taylor swift taylor swift correct answer is drake whoa
[66:15]133 top 40 hits 133 that have made it in the top 40 on the billboard ah 100 that's so crazy that
[66:24]he has that many songs at the top because you know he started at the bottom like but now he's here
[66:30]yeah so crazy russell's like what okay go ahead you must have a really big team all right so the
[66:36]whole crew is here the first artist on the list that only had one top 40 hit this made it to
[66:42]number one janice joplin me and bobby mcgee her only solo hit that made it to the top 40
[66:49]also a song that she didn't write similar to jimmy and bob miller who wrote this
[66:56]oh yeah you're right that's correct that is right but so we always know peace of my heart is the
[67:04]other janice joplin song that everyone knows but that was done by a band called big brother in the
[67:09]holding company i had no idea i just figured that was a janice joplin solo hit but it's not so this
[67:15]doesn't count wow that's crazy that's great russell i can't believe that's a great trivia
[67:19]question such a great recording the other really cool trivia question a few weeks ago we talked
[67:23]about how sitting on the dock of the bay was the first song to be released posthumously that made
[67:29]it to number one so that was otis redding a year later janice joplin dies and this
[67:34]song is released posthumously also made it to number one i thought that was crazy oh wow wow
[67:39]all right next up on the list we got to go to one of aaron's favorites they only had
[67:45]one top 40 hit this is funkadelic one nation under a groove it made it to 18 in 1978 yes
[67:53]and this is another one that's tracked in label hell you can't stream this anywhere
[68:02]on a legal streaming service
[68:05]so supposedly clinton would give all of the tracks with the most hit potential to parliament
[68:16]and not funkadelic and then he thought funkadelic needed a hit so he gave this one to funkadelic and
[68:22]not parliament yeah i i didn't know that about this one specifically but yeah that's why a lot
[68:27]of this stuff gets tied up in these weird internet uh rabbit holes because sometimes
[68:32]some some stuff never made it to to streaming services some labels sitting on it somewhere
[68:37]clinton's got a dispute about it i don't know so you don't get to hear that song as often as it
[68:40]deserves there was i remember there's a desk in old maine at saint olaf and it just had carved in
[68:45]it peanut the bass player and i was like god i didn't know people here were so into you know
[68:51]parliament funkadelic or whatever and then when they came and all those girls got on their bus
[68:55]to blow them afterwards i was like oh this makes way more sense to me you guys heard that story
[69:00]right where they came to say no and they were like oh my god i don't know what to do with this
[69:02]yeah and all these women were trying to get back on the bus afterwards and all the security guards
[69:08]were going do not go get on this bus they were telling him like straight up like you cannot get
[69:11]on this bus do not get on this bus it's bad news and i was like get me on the bus they're like sir
[69:16]that's obviously a wig so the next band on the list is one we've covered before public enemy
[69:25]only one top 40 hit this is give it up i know this will be one of matt's favorites we got a little
[69:30]bit of flavor flavor here
[69:32]this is the one that made it yep they've had four top hits on the rap top 100 whatever but this was
[69:43]the only one that made the hot 100 or the top 40 on the top is 9-1-1's a joke is that just flavor
[69:49]no that's public enemy wow that didn't make it that's i don't think so fight the power can't
[69:55]trust it 9-1-1 is a joke and shut them down were the ones that made number one on the rap list but
[70:01]they did not make the top 100
[70:02]top 40 on the hot 100 wow all right next up on the list is one that we covered one of my favorite
[70:07]albums she only had one top 40 hit she also died young like hendrix and like janice joplin this is
[70:15]amy winehouse we did rehab this one made it to number nine
[70:18]she only had one that made the top 40
[70:26]with all the re-releases and remixes that's true that's
[70:32]true poshnessy you think that one would get up there right i have to say when when people say
[70:38]is there an album on the list that's really surprised you the back to black is always the
[70:42]one i bring up and guess what it makes me sound smart because sometimes i should say chumbawamba
[70:46]they go i don't think they're on the list i just like saying chumbawamba guys i'm so sorry
[70:51]all right the last artist on the list an all-time artist that has to be recognized on this podcast
[70:57]that's only had one top 40 hit it's our guy back he's had a ton of hits and he's had a ton of hits
[71:02]one top 40 hit and it was loser it made it to number 10 for 24 weeks this is his first single
[71:10]right yeah this is good to base a whole podcast around a guy that has one top 40 hit we really
[71:14]did a great job i realized that thinking i realized that today steve winwood the namesake
[71:20]of the podcast russell this is such a good list once again but so the really cool thing so if
[71:25]you're going to look at it hendrix i think only made it to like 20 on the top 40 back it made it
[71:32]10 and was up there for 24 weeks so when it comes to being a one-hit wonder did beck do it better
[71:38]than jimmy hendrix did it better is that how you say it did beck do it better and then i respond i
[71:44]must have lost that by the other way should we rename this podcast steve winwoods would win
[71:49]with winwoods i screwed up the joke okay we'll rename the podcast chumbawamba chumbawamba did it
[71:55]better
[71:56]that was another
[72:02]i like it goodness russell that was easily a top five how does jimmy hendrix only have one top 40
[72:09]that's insane absolutely i can't believe that something off the are you experience album didn't
[72:13]make it maybe they didn't like foxy lady or purple haze none of those manic depression none of those
[72:17]made it doesn't someone yeah it's craziness that was for those long-haired hippie druggie kids that
[72:22]were listening to that stuff though wasn't like popular mainstream if he's up in heaven like
[72:27]sitting there with bob newhart and bob newhart's like yeah i crushed the billboard top 100 and
[72:32]he's like hendrix is like well shit yeah he's like hey did i ever tell you about baseball
[72:36]uh they pitch a ball but you get three balls
[72:40]jimmy hendrix is like trying to choke on his own vomit again he's like give me out here
[72:45]all right
[72:46]i don't think that's okay no okay
[72:51]i can only think of one person when i hear this
[72:56]all clogan chumbawamba
[72:58]that's it the hollywood hulk cogan
[73:02]what an amazing end to the album though if you've got a hulk cogan theme song at the end
[73:23]of your album it's legit listen if you're gonna fuck your friend's wife on cam and then later
[73:27]shut a website down about it voodoo child best song to do it to i say
[73:30]you
[73:32]maybe chumbawamba but what do i know uh i i just want to say normally we this is like where we end
[73:38]and we go do other stuff but i want to say they they played that song they were getting recorded
[73:42]for a documentary and they were like okay act like you're recording a song and jimmy's like
[73:46]oh guys you know that song voodoo child we played earlier just follow me along we're gonna play this
[73:50]and that's literally what they did in three they did that song in three takes like probably one of
[73:54]his most famous songs i've ever not the top song russell okay i was listening during the list but
[73:58]it's it's one of his top nope just what i said it wasn't not one of his top
[74:02]god damn it rob you suck as a podcast host all right let's get into everybody's favorite
[74:06]section the patented and very popular rating system
[74:11]oh i did find my kazoo list
[74:15]love roller coaster that was on the kazoo list
[74:22]i don't know if i know that one russell this list you're making is a top five list i think it's
[74:31]great we're all the way up to our
[74:32]rating system this is number 53 and we need to decide if 53 is a perfect place for electric
[74:37]ladyland by jimmy hendrix so listen we need to decide okay now you guys listen up to this because
[74:42]lately it feels like you haven't been paying attention to this part is this rolling well
[74:45]toned it's perfect at 53 okay this is so much not as good as station to station by david bowie and
[74:52]it should be back at 53 or is this a rolling groan oh we didn't like it it's a double album okay
[74:58]too many songs about mermants okay my fed i have two
[75:02]fetishes mermaids and hot sauce on feet so i did not like this album not enough songs about
[75:06]crosstown traffic we need more songs about crosstown listen i've tried to get downtown
[75:11]i gotta know what the traffic is well better tune in on the fives uh that's a radio joke i guess
[75:17]uh so that's a if you didn't like it it is a rolling groan or should this album be higher
[75:22]should we have done this not when we're all sick of the podcast this lady at 53 and once again
[75:27]we're only 10 of the way through staring at our three faces uh talking about the
[75:32]same stuff over and over and that would be a did this album get rolling boned it should be higher
[75:36]now of course we just saw the rolling stone website we know that higher would be lower
[75:40]on the website although farther to the right if you're clicking on the top part uh which took
[75:45]forever to load because the rolling stones website uh sucks balls so uh what do you think matt is
[75:51]this a rolling toned well toned rolling bone or rolling ground oh i made a little mistake i got
[75:55]to start over this is the patented
[75:57]i think it's a rolling toned no
[76:02]i i this is the best jimmy hendrix album there is in my opinion so i think uh this got rolling
[76:10]boned it should be way higher than 53 in my estimation like a top 25 album for me i thought
[76:18]it was great and again you are wrong live at the bbc is the best uh jimmy hendrix i i mentioned
[76:23]that earlier it seems like maybe you're not listening you're kind of getting ready to go
[76:26]to bed please listen to when i'm talking rob i i heard you i heard you i heard what you said
[76:31]but
[76:32]i disagree all right had to throw something in there because i thought maybe that was too mean
[76:35]what i said to you uh rosie what do you think i think it's great at 53 it's perfect rolling bone
[76:42]should it be lower or rolling grown it should be higher now in this case aaron higher would be
[76:48]lower on the list if you're going from one to a hundred vertically although not that's not what
[76:52]the website does i love this album i listened to it a bunch of times this week i i feel like i've
[76:58]only scratched the surface of what it's all about and i loved
[77:02]i love jimmy just really spreading his wings and going fully cosmic with his ideas would you say
[77:07]he's spreading his little wing i would say i would say he's spreading his little wing and if six were
[77:12]nine then uh maybe he could meet a foxy lady and then it would take him out of his manic depression
[77:16]and oh you just dunked it on me you just dunked on me people that's what i'm saying i get it he
[77:22]doesn't do that much for the show but that's why we love him he's great
[77:25]so for yeah i would put it above jimmy's other album that we've heard and uh yeah i mean
[77:32]when you said mentioned station to station uh as the previous one to this one which i enjoyed but
[77:37]this that just that doesn't hold a candle to this in my opinion so i'm going to say it is rolling
[77:41]bone it should have been lower on the list higher on the list lower number shit rolling it got
[77:47]rolling bone okay we better start over this is the popular and padded rating system
[77:51]oh man i'm so sorry guys all right russell what do you think
[77:56]overall if you're going to give me an album that's got all along the watchtower crosstown
[78:02]midnight lamp it's really hard to argue this shouldn't be a top 50 album right to me there's
[78:07]four or five hits that just absolutely crush but honestly i think the opening track is brutal
[78:13]there's the one minute track of random wind songs or something going on there and to me if you're
[78:19]going to judge the whole album that stuff has to be taken away from it so i love some of the hits
[78:23]but i think some of the fluff is not for me so just like the hulkster after he gets out of the
[78:29]weight room while listening to voodoo child i'm gonna say it's a good album i'm gonna say it's a
[78:32]this is rolling well toned oh i just said
[78:36]oh just wait i gotta stop fucking my friend's wife who hello who is this oh it's my kid how
[78:44]are you doing what's that you got a dwi in your lamborghini oh my god oh well but all right all
[78:51]those things are real you cannot sue me for libel oh yeah guys the correct answer is this is a
[78:57]rolling cessation this album wait cessation cessation listen it's
[79:02]so hard i actually the easy part is i can't remember what i've said for any other so they're
[79:06]all on the table doesn't matter to me this album makes me so sad that this was jimmy hendrix last
[79:11]studio album you can just see he's got this glimpse of like he's going to break past this
[79:16]trying to be like other rock and roll stars i would have loved to see what he was going to do
[79:20]in the next two three five albums you know getting into jazz getting into funk maybe coming out with
[79:25]a live album with miles davis like it just makes me sad that we didn't get to see what that happens
[79:30]i feel like it really could have changed music forever kind of
[79:32]bums me out man what a perfect way to end a podcast where we didn't even get to hear chumbawamba
[79:36]actually it's playing in the background right now finally uh so next up guys we have a real
[79:41]change this is very different for this list this next artist was a four-time nvp in the nfl and
[79:48]when he retired he had the records for most yards attempts and touchdowns he also won rookie of the
[79:53]year after being a number one draft pick and a star in a cross player college it's a four disc
[79:58]box set by jim brown star time wow this is gonna be bad
[80:02]zeroes we get back to sports wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute i misread that it's james
[80:06]brown you mean that guy who broke into an insurance office with a shotgun when he was
[80:10]high-end pcp to complain that people were using his bathroom well i guess that's cool too back
[80:15]did it better when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time you're like they
[80:20]take games from you just sum them up as a guy
[80:22]some of the albums sounds like
[80:29]hey here's a guy who shit his pants one time in third grade
[80:32]i've got the podcast for you jack
[80:36]beck did it better
[80:39]russell i'm gonna ask you to leave actually
[80:47]sorry we're gonna need that table
