Eric B.and Rakim: Paid in Full (1987)
[00:00]In 2020, four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by Rolling Stone magazine.
[00:06]This resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music, excoriated the order, and led us to making this podcast.
[00:11]We are far from experts, and we promise to do almost no research.
[00:15]All opinions are our own, unless you disagree.
[00:18]Please sit back and enjoy Beck Did It Better.
[00:21]From 1987, this is album 61, Paid in Full by Eric B. and Rakim.
[00:27]Guys, if only I knew who their agent and manager were, I could include that too, but I have no idea.
[00:31]It's just impossible to tell these guys. It's hard to tell.
[00:34]Listen, let's go to the radio. I actually heard that K-Rob, believe it or not, K-Rob, I have given them a little money to talk about our podcast.
[00:44]So let's see, let's listen to them talk about it. Here we go.
[00:46]What's up, everybody? Welcome to K-Rob, K-R-O-B.
[00:51]Listen, this week, Rob and the boys are talking about Paid in Full, but have you heard about the newest hit?
[00:57]Link.
[00:57]Date Russell.
[00:58]Oh, no.
[00:59]Yeah.
[01:01]Hey, Rob, what's up?
[01:02]Hey, I'm making this song trying to get more people to date Russell.
[01:06]Well, check this out.
[01:08]You're the main host, right?
[01:10]Yeah, true.
[01:11]And Aaron is the guy who laughs at everything?
[01:14]Word up.
[01:15]And Matt is the guy who doesn't talk so much, but it's actually good because then Rob can talk more?
[01:20]Indeed.
[01:21]And we're trying to make people date our co-host, Russ.
[01:25]Yeah.
[01:25]We've given him lots of good advice.
[01:27]From going alpha on the bartender, to playing jazz in the car, to actually staying in contact when he goes on a work trip.
[01:33]What else did you tell him?
[01:35]And going on dates that don't involve a walk, but do involve a chair, so he doesn't have to sit on the floor.
[01:40]Maybe after this song, we can get some more people to date Russell.
[01:44]Thinking of a master plan to get more dates for Russ, my man.
[01:49]So I'm going to do some improvises to make a rap with some dating advices, if you follow everything I say.
[01:57]There's a good chance I could get you laid.
[01:59]Go to neighborhood parties, to make some alliances.
[02:02]Go to the store to get some kitchen appliances.
[02:04]Use a translator so you can understand her.
[02:07]Avoid the places with the cute bartender.
[02:09]Beginning of dates, I think it's best to start it out with a pregnancy test.
[02:14]Some people really think it's great to get your hair done on a secret date.
[02:19]To me, it's real simple.
[02:20]Just show them the amount of cash you have in the bank account.
[02:23]Just do everything here that we have discussed.
[02:26]And we can get people.
[02:27]To date our boy, Russ.
[02:28]Take my advice, and we can be successful.
[02:31]To meet our goal, which is to get you laid, Russell.
[02:33]Yes.
[02:34]When you want it.
[02:35]I'm going to need you to pee on this stick, please.
[02:39]It really wasn't fair.
[02:40]I saw it paid in full.
[02:41]All I get to give is laid, Russell.
[02:43]It's too easy.
[02:44]The best is that every date I go on, I'm going to pick the woman up, and that's going to be playing in the background.
[02:50]Well, believe it or not, I've already sketched an album for the single.
[02:55]I think they did it better.
[02:57]Okay, and I will admit, I put on some extra veins on there, but I think it's a really good album art, actually.
[03:01]I'm pretty proud of myself.
[03:02]These are drawings I've been working on ever since middle school.
[03:05]Big and veiny.
[03:07]All right, listen, this is Beck Did It Better, the podcast about the top 500 albums of all time.
[03:12]Listen, I've got three guys here who can really relate to the song, Ain't No Jokes.
[03:16]I got Matt in Minneapolis.
[03:17]Matt, how are you doing?
[03:18]Just great, Rob.
[03:20]Just great.
[03:20]Thanks for having me.
[03:21]I got Russell in Minnesota.
[03:22]Russell, how are you doing today?
[03:23]Guys, I like to stand in a crowd and watch the people wonder.
[03:27]Damn.
[03:27]But think about it.
[03:28]Then you'll understand.
[03:29]Nobody beats the R.
[03:31]Check out my melody.
[03:32]Seriously, guys, I'm requesting that you all refer to me as the R for the rest of this episode.
[03:37]Switch it around.
[03:37]It still comes out.
[03:38]The R.
[03:39]Yes.
[03:39]The R.
[03:40]The R.
[03:41]And Aaron, do you know what girls say to guys with big dicks?
[03:45]Oh, no.
[03:45]No, of course you don't.
[03:49]Aaron in California, how are you doing, Aaron?
[03:51]Oh, that wasn't right.
[03:52]That wasn't right.
[03:54]You're right.
[03:55]No smiling.
[03:55]I'm just here to.
[03:56]I'm just here.
[03:57]I'm just here to nominate my main host for president.
[03:58]Let's talk about Eric being Rakim.
[04:00]Not Rakim.
[04:00]Rakim.
[04:01]Sounds good.
[04:02]Rakim.
[04:03]Okay.
[04:03]Well, okay.
[04:04]That's not a big deal.
[04:05]I'm not stressed about that right now.
[04:07]Not the man.
[04:07]All right.
[04:10]So let's get to this week's voicemails.
[04:12]And guess what?
[04:13]So stupid.
[04:14]We actually have a return contestant on this week's voice.
[04:17]They can't even tell what we're doing.
[04:18]God, the listeners are dumb shits.
[04:20]They're just the dumbest.
[04:21]I will say, by the way, our voicemail and text are blowing up.
[04:25]It's crazy.
[04:27]Hi, guys.
[04:28]Matt from New York again.
[04:29]A couple of things.
[04:30]First of all, Rob didn't show up to my party.
[04:33]I mean, there's no big deal.
[04:36]Like we had a ton of fun and, you know, even that store bought cake.
[04:40]And so it's whatever.
[04:41]Goodbye.
[04:45]Moving on to something a little more up the alley.
[04:49]Just curious.
[04:51]What would you do if on one of your dates took one of your dates to a comedy show?
[04:57]And she started heckling the performer?
[05:00]Oh, God.
[05:01]And would you leave?
[05:02]Hide under the desk?
[05:03]Join in?
[05:04]Obviously, this has nothing to do with my personal life.
[05:08]Just kidding.
[05:09]Okay.
[05:10]Thank you, guys.
[05:11]What was the question?
[05:12]What if your date started heckling the performer in a comedy show?
[05:18]Wow.
[05:20]That's a tough question.
[05:21]Normally, I want to avoid any sort of undue attention, typically.
[05:24]But honestly, I think it really depends on.
[05:27]How hot she is.
[05:27]If she's super hot and she can get away with heckling the performer,
[05:32]then I think you go for it.
[05:34]If not, then I think you got to stay to yourself.
[05:36]Russell, that is so pathetic because that is exactly what I was going to say.
[05:39]You have really scraped the bottom of the bucket.
[05:42]Because I'm like, if she's hot and everybody looks at her and then they see I'm the date,
[05:45]it's a win-win, baby.
[05:47]That's what I'm talking about.
[05:48]But what is the key to being a good heckler to begin with?
[05:51]Is it like the hate?
[05:52]There is none.
[05:52]There is none.
[05:53]I'm telling you.
[05:54]We go to the comedy store.
[05:56]We go to the comedy.
[05:57]We sell it like once a month.
[05:58]We see it.
[05:58]Nobody ever is a good heckler.
[06:01]They are drunk and they are talking to him and it ruins the show.
[06:04]And it's the worst.
[06:04]I don't even like people talking around.
[06:06]I'm not.
[06:06]Everyone who heckles thinks, oh, I'm helping out the show.
[06:10]I'm helping this person out.
[06:11]You're not like you are making it, especially for a Midwestern guy like me.
[06:14]It is so incredibly awkward when a comic has to be like, please shut up.
[06:18]Like people.
[06:19]And especially as a teacher, I can relate to it because I just, I, it's the same thing.
[06:22]You got to be like, oh, am I here to hear you talk students?
[06:25]No.
[06:26]This is my.
[06:27]This is my turn.
[06:27]Okay.
[06:27]This is the only place in my life where people actually get to listen to me.
[06:30]Heckling is always bad.
[06:31]And if your date does it, you need to get up and excuse yourself to the bathroom and then
[06:35]leave.
[06:36]I might strongly beg to disagree with Rob's assertion that his classroom is the only place
[06:41]in his life where people are forced to listen to him.
[06:42]But we're all here for 60 some episodes.
[06:44]I mean, who knows?
[06:45]I see what you did there.
[06:48]It took all my willpower to sit there and listen to that sentence.
[06:51]I will say that I'm very proud of myself.
[06:53]I think, I think heckling the comic is right up there with being rude to the world.
[06:57]The wait staff rude to an Uber driver, something along those lines.
[06:59]I think it happens once and she's out the door.
[07:02]I, you can't do it.
[07:06]It's, it's especially because you're ruining the show for everybody else.
[07:09]Nobody goes to a comedy show being like, wow, I hope I'm sitting next to a really good heckler.
[07:13]Yeah.
[07:13]Get up there on stage.
[07:14]If you think you got what it takes, you'd be the one to get up there.
[07:17]I told you guys, I went, I had a friend of mine.
[07:19]Okay.
[07:20]There's like the 67 year old woman who is doing standup comedy, right?
[07:24]She's like, Hey, I'm doing standup comedy.
[07:26]I was like, I will.
[07:26]I will be there.
[07:27]This I have to see.
[07:28]I have to see a place where people like you're doing standup comedy.
[07:31]She was okay.
[07:32]She was, but I saw somebody do a five minute bit telling jokes to no laughs, zero laughs.
[07:39]Nobody laughed once to any of the jokes.
[07:41]And I was like, I could not do that for 10 seconds.
[07:44]If I tell one joke and nobody laughs and I'm not even talking about like podcasts, I'm
[07:48]talking about real life.
[07:48]I tell a joke and nobody laughs.
[07:50]It messes me up for a while.
[07:52]And I was just sitting there and I was like, this is my hell is watching somebody bomb and
[07:56]looking at me and I'm looking at them and I'm like, yeah, you're not like, I gave him
[08:00]a couple of pity laughs to start.
[08:02]And then after that, I was like, I can't do it anymore.
[08:03]I can't.
[08:04]It was, and it wasn't even like a super offensive or super edgy.
[08:07]It just wasn't like, it was like, it was like somebody like heard about what a joke
[08:11]might be, but never actually heard a joke and then tried to emulate it.
[08:14]It was just terrible.
[08:15]It doesn't sound familiar to this pod at all.
[08:17]Does it Rob?
[08:18]Yeah.
[08:18]I've never, never experienced that.
[08:19]Does it Rob?
[08:19]Nope.
[08:20]Totally foreign concept to us.
[08:22]Yeah.
[08:23]Like when I ask Aaron what they say to people with big dicks and he goes, hmm.
[08:26]Huh?
[08:26]Hmm.
[08:27]I'm like, okay, well, yeah, you say no, you know what the goddamn joke is.
[08:31]You know what I'm setting you up for?
[08:32]Just help me out, please.
[08:34]No way.
[08:34]Not that.
[08:35]No, I got to ask you guys.
[08:37]I don't, I was thinking about this.
[08:38]I don't know if a comedy club is a great date spot.
[08:40]You run the risk of them bringing up some sort of uncomfortable topic.
[08:44]They, they, they discover the comic discovers that you're there on a date and they zero
[08:49]in and they start picking on you.
[08:50]I think there's a lot more that can go wrong at a comedy club than would go right.
[08:54]It's definitely not a first date.
[08:55]Would you say that?
[08:56]It's a top five fear of yours.
[08:57]Cause I've heard you bring that up before that you're worried about seeing a comic and
[09:00]getting singled out as being on a date.
[09:02]That sounds like it's a major fear.
[09:03]Yeah.
[09:04]I don't, I don't think I want to be picked on by someone who's way funnier than me in
[09:07]front of a bunch of people.
[09:08]I have no problem.
[09:09]If someone, you guys are going to pick on me one-on-one or via this podcast where I
[09:14]don't have to see people laughing at me.
[09:15]I just know what's happening.
[09:16]That's totally different than being in the middle of the room and you're the center of
[09:20]attention and you're the butt of the joke.
[09:21]I'm not down with that.
[09:22]I go, every time I go to the comedy place, I'm like, I'm hoping I get to sit in the front.
[09:26]I'm hoping they're going to talk to me.
[09:27]I think it'd be fun.
[09:27]Never.
[09:28]They put me so far back.
[09:29]It's crazy.
[09:30]I'm using binoculars to see the show.
[09:31]So I think there is only one thing I can do though, because I do feel, still feel bad
[09:36]about missing this guy's party to the point now where he's just communicating with me
[09:39]via voicemail on my podcast.
[09:40]I think I'm going to have to invite him to one of my epic parties that I have.
[09:44]That's just the way it is.
[09:45]What kind of party do you have?
[09:47]We usually rent out the roof and we hire a bartender and I have friends over.
[09:51]Sounds pretty epic.
[09:52]Yeah, it rules.
[09:53]It's awesome.
[09:54]We get blasted.
[09:56]It's out of our brains because I'm in my own building.
[09:58]I can just walk downstairs.
[09:59]Jenny invites all of Rob's friends from Minnesota, but then makes them be the bartenders and
[10:04]clean up after everything and stuff.
[10:06]It's really fun, guys.
[10:07]Let me tell you that.
[10:08]You'd be lucky if you got to be the bartender.
[10:10]You're probably just filling buckets of ice for that party.
[10:12]You're just, you're mopping floors.
[10:13]God damn it.
[10:14]17 floors up again.
[10:16]He's walking around with that shovel, cleaning up the shit after the pony rides or whatever,
[10:21]right?
[10:21]Yeah.
[10:22]All right.
[10:23]Let's get into every-
[10:24]Hey, before we get into that,
[10:26]can we discuss something that came up on the last episode that needs to be addressed?
[10:30]Uh-oh.
[10:31]Okay, let's do it.
[10:32]Yeah, I'm here for it.
[10:33]I think this could be kind of serious and it may really impact someone on this podcast,
[10:37]that person being Matt.
[10:38]And so I just needed to bring this up.
[10:40]Okay.
[10:40]Last time on our podcast, Matt mentioned that his mother-in-law texted him and said,
[10:45]you don't look anything like John Candy.
[10:47]She was clearly listening to the podcast and heard that Matt said he looked like John Candy.
[10:52]She's got it wrong and it makes me wonder whether she even knows.
[10:56]That's who Matt is on the podcast because we specifically spent time talking.
[11:00]I said, this is the R talking now, otherwise known as Russ.
[11:03]The R said that I had been accused of looking like John Candy and it gave me this complex
[11:10]and we had talked about it, but no one had ever mentioned Matt being looking like John Candy.
[11:15]So I legit think that Matt's mother-in-law listens to this pod and thinks that I am Matt.
[11:21]Is that true, Matt?
[11:22]Or what's happening here?
[11:23]Well, I, that, that, this is all coming.
[11:26]It's coming back to me now.
[11:26]I do remember that, you know, I do remember that conversation.
[11:29]We had it.
[11:30]I have not listened to the episode to verify or anything, but yeah, that's a good question.
[11:35]I'm going to have to, might have to stealth like check in.
[11:38]Is there a chance she thinks Matt's on all these dating apps and she's got no issue with it?
[11:42]She's like, well, my grandkids seem happy.
[11:48]I guess it's fine.
[11:48]I'm not, I'm not worried.
[11:49]No one's complaining to me.
[11:50]So everything's okay.
[11:51]I guess I don't have to do his laundry anymore.
[11:53]Can you imagine knowing Matt and listening to the podcast?
[11:56]You would just be, you'd be like, okay, when, uh, when is he, I heard him introduce himself
[12:02]and now, uh, so is he going to speak up on the rating system?
[12:05]Here he comes.
[12:06]He's going to give a little thing about how he didn't listen to the album during the rating
[12:08]system.
[12:09]So maybe it's possible.
[12:10]She listened to one episode, listened to like a half hour and only heard three voices and
[12:14]figured one of them had to be Matt and didn't know that the R was even on the episode, but
[12:19]she was definitely confused, Matt.
[12:20]At some point in this episode, I'm going to stop laughing when you refer to yourself as
[12:24]the R, but every time I never will.
[12:26]And now I love it.
[12:26]It wouldn't be so bad.
[12:28]Except if he's wearing a shirt that says the R in big letters, then he's got a big chain
[12:31]that has an R, a giant R on it.
[12:34]Yes.
[12:34]Um, I, so let's do a little thing.
[12:36]I'm going to, I'm going to help your mother-in-law.
[12:38]Okay.
[12:38]So this is Patty.
[12:40]This is going to help Patty.
[12:41]Oh, Patty.
[12:42]So Patty, listen, this is me.
[12:43]I'm Rob.
[12:44]So that's my voice.
[12:50]This is me.
[12:51]I'm Rob.
[12:51]Okay.
[12:52]This is, um, this is,
[12:56]Aaron.
[12:56]That's what I'm going to start calling my penis.
[12:58]Okay.
[12:59]That's Aaron's voice.
[12:59]This is Matt.
[13:00]That's what I call my penis.
[13:01]Okay.
[13:02]And then this is Russell.
[13:03]All I want to do is make love to you.
[13:06]So that's, okay.
[13:08]All I want to do is make love to you.
[13:12]So, uh, Patty, if you want to make that your ringtone or whatever, feel free.
[13:15]This is the R coming at you.
[13:16]All I want to do is make love to you.
[13:18]Well, I gotta, I gotta give it up to our fans.
[13:21]I have had two personal phone calls telling me that how much they liked the talking book.
[13:26]episode which i think might be our our best that we're ever going to do um and i also had we got
[13:31]multiple text messages this week some of which i put on instagram including our fans sending us a
[13:37]mini tabasco bottle you know that you get like at a brunch place and says this is for your dick
[13:41]pics and at first i was like what the fuck is this like what am i what are people talking about
[13:46]because i get these messages kind of mixed in with my own messages so i don't always know it's for
[13:50]the podcast and i was like i just got one too hold on it's craziness and then i also got a message
[13:57]that said uh how much they like the pod it was just like i got so many messages it was so nice
[14:01]i appreciate it matt matt the tabasco dick one that was just from me to you that was not from
[14:06]a podcast listener there was somebody who had their hand up to like a mini uh flower bag was
[14:12]that was that just to me or is that it was just to you so whoever sent that shit to matt please
[14:17]send it to the beck to the better account 802-277-BECK if you send it to matt it's like
[14:22]going into a black hole it's not coming out matt is like oh my god i'm getting so much content on
[14:26]my phone i didn't even know about well i was just i was confused i had no idea what it was
[14:31]i don't listen to the pods i don't know you got your hand to a mini flower bag and matt's like
[14:35]no there's a normal text i don't need to pay attention to that oh no is it bigger or smaller
[14:40]than a little shampoo bottle i know the kids downstairs oh man has to go take care of his
[14:44]kids he's gonna go explain why the mini flower is so funny compared to a dick pic because
[14:47]the thing is when something is smaller the dick is going to look bigger and that's the key to a
[14:53]right oh would it be funny if you took a dick pic of just a flaccid penis and sent it to somebody
[14:58]that would be a funny gag would it hey you still up and it's just a little piece of gum in a bird's
[15:04]nest and you're like i'm sorry about that sure we're not a grower right and sometimes not even
[15:10]a grower i mean honestly we're this gross i'm so stressed right now this usually doesn't happen
[15:17]and sometimes it's a grower but then after that nothing happens and that's normal too and that's
[15:21]fine actually uh all right let's get into everybody's favorite russell do you have any
[15:26]more detective work that you've done no r sorry i gotta express the r the r i'm begging you please
[15:34]correct me the rest of the night for the r that's the plan yeah it's the master plan let's get into
[15:40]everybody's favorite segment rolling going it's it's it's time it's it's time man's kids
[15:47]came downstairs hey dad why are you getting so many texts of tiny objects what's the point
[15:51]i already made that joke but man came back but that one's on so i had to make it again worth it
[15:56]uh rosie rolling going how's it going with you oh hey it's going great i took a vacation last
[16:02]week with my family it was fantastic we went to kawaii it was marvelous uh ate as much poke
[16:10]as i could i think i ate poke every day uh rob i did not take any photos for you i apologize i was
[16:17]um that's it actually really pissed me off when you sent me that text of like oh i had a great
[16:22]poke in hawaii i didn't send rob a picture hey guess what i know fuck you okay i know worst
[16:26]worst thing i could do not send you the photo i really apologize i had a super good time i got
[16:30]on a surfboard twice which i usually only get on once but i went twice this time uh i wouldn't say
[16:35]that i surfed i didn't really ride away but i like to get out there and get my ass kicked uh that was
[16:41]great and the best part was when i was getting my ass kicked on the surfboard i did see a sea turtle
[16:46]like 10 feet from me
[16:47]so that really like at least made it worthwhile like me and a sea turtle out there on the
[16:51]out on the open seas uh but unfortunately i have to say aaron aaron aaron aaron i i can't i can't
[16:58]go without saying this okay are you sure it wasn't that your pants fell down and you looked down and
[17:02]you saw a sea turtle okay and i'm sorry not worth it not funny i knew it wasn't funny when i said it
[17:10]i but i can't help it board shirts fell off i looked down i couldn't tell if it was me or the
[17:13]moray eel i wasn't sure what was going on whether it was me or the mud shark i mean
[17:17]i'm not sure i was going snorkeling with a friend of mine and he was like bro check out this brain
[17:22]coral and i went down and he had a scrotum outside of his swimsuits and was holding it and i was like
[17:26]that's a good joke bro gotta give it up going down below put on my mask looking at your scrotum
[17:31]funny as hell that's hard to beat my my problem is i at this point was i don't know 2500 miles
[17:39]from california i don't know how many miles that makes me from new york i cannot escape
[17:44]rob as an influence in my life i go halfway
[17:47]across the country from rob i'm seven eight hour nine hours away from him on the time zones
[17:52]rob is still a part of my life so two things happened one uh some friends of mine from uh
[17:59]the midwest from ankeny iowa were celebrating their their 50th wedding anniversary so the
[18:03]request was to make them a video to wish them happy anniversary oh no i'm i'm giving them you
[18:09]know hey rob and linda you know happy anniversary here's my memory of you all and my son is in the
[18:17]hey hey guys my dad has another friend named rob as well that's right as though this rob is the
[18:26]most important rob in my life he couldn't let it go he had to tell rob and linda that there's
[18:31]another friend there's another rob that i like so that was important hey so that can i send out a
[18:36]message can i send out a message to your rob yeah you can i'll send you the link you can send
[18:41]sorry rob that's the way it is
[18:46]don't do it
[18:47]okay i'm rob number one day whatever aaron's kid's name is aaron's kid at gmail.com but the other one
[18:53]that came up is that the snorkeling masks for the most part seem like the snorkeling masks you've
[18:58]seen on the beach for your whole life with the goggles and the tube that comes out just normal
[19:02]stuff right but there are some new new style snorkeling masks that are a full sort of face
[19:09]shield and then the breathing tube looks exactly like a personal massage device and so all i could
[19:17]think about was how many jokes rob could make oh i almost just passed out i laughed so hard i almost
[19:23]passed out some of them are one on each side and so you watch these people with them in their mouths
[19:29]before they go in the water and then they get in the water and it's just like dildos poking up out
[19:33]of the water and like my wife and i are just like rob should be here to make these jokes
[19:38]and i can't escape it i took a break for a week on hawaii on a tropical island and all i can think
[19:44]about are the dildo jokes that rob would make about these snorkels
[19:47]you're just thinking that looks like a steely dan that looks like a morrison
[19:51]is this so funny how many things look like vibrators nowadays like my wife's razors that
[19:57]are in the shower why do they look like vibrators i don't know why women's razors have to look like
[20:00]vibrators my razors don't look like vibrators hers are like all curvy and like it's crazy what
[20:06]would be craziest if you put that snorkel in your mouth and then it had variable speeds
[20:09]it's like i always think that's weird too that vibrators have multiple speeds it's like it
[20:17]that's it nobody is doing this like
[20:19]it's like oh yeah that's what i like it sounds good i like it when it revs up like that uh yeah
[20:27]those new those new masks though the full face masks like they look awesome don't they like it
[20:32]looks like you're like in a submarine but the submarine is you it looks cool face mask looks
[20:36]like yeah you're gonna like an astronaut who's going out snorkeling like the face mask itself
[20:40]looks amazing but the the breathing apparatus question i do have two i have two things to say
[20:44]to you number one okay the fact that something looks like you're in a submarine and you're
[20:47]like a vibrator and then you instantly think of me is weird okay that's a weird thing that i'm like
[20:52]your vibrator guy you and your wife talk about me when you see something that looks like a vibrator
[20:56]don't know how i feel about that number two i didn't think about you at all this last week
[21:01]not once did you enter my mind
[21:03]you were the farthest thing from my mind no i didn't see a single thing that made me think of
[21:11]you didn't didn't even contemplate where you were up to didn't ask how hawaii was nothing
[21:15]that's what matt usually thinks of us while we're
[21:17]doing this podcast the three of us are the last thing matt walked away for 10 minutes none of us
[21:23]really even noticed no aaron of course i thought about you a ton i that's so mean of me to say but
[21:27]it's too funny um it's a good joke it's a good joke thank you that's what i was waiting to hear
[21:32]i was like pressuring aaron to be nice to me for being mean to him you sick fuck what was the best
[21:37]part of your trip to hawaii aaron well the best part was that i was there with my childhood best
[21:42]friend who was there with his kids so the absolute best part was that my son got to play with my
[21:47]kids uh on the beach and my son was all about the beach he was in the water all day every day and so
[21:53]just oh yeah him running around how long have you known scott um at probably 30 years uh or more
[22:00]so yeah we grew up together went to east elementary in ankeny iowa together and our kids his kids are
[22:07]three and six and mine is four so it was like this felt like a real like once in a lifetime
[22:11]kind of experience isn't amazing too how fast kids like that can just make friends like you're
[22:17]like okay we're friends now okay let's go to the beach it's like 100 please i've worked with people
[22:22]for three years and i would not consider them a friend at all right and kids just hit it right off
[22:27]like wallace was like we were going home he was telling the tsa people like i made a good friend
[22:31]on vacation like it was amazing like he's yeah yeah it was that was that was easily thank you
[22:35]for asking russell that was the highlight wallace why how was your vacation in hawaii oh it was great
[22:39]but uh on the beach every time some some people put some stuff in their mouths my mom and dad would
[22:43]laugh about it and they talk about the beach and i was like oh my god i'm gonna go to the beach
[22:47]good friend rob does your kid listen to the podcast like how does he know you just talk
[22:51]about me that much we talk about uncle rob yeah because we he knows that he knows uncle rob is
[22:56]the master of dirty jokes so he knows rob is the king of dirty jokes come on man and you've got
[23:01]that towel hanging up in your bed okay so i did send you guys a towel with me and a speedo on it
[23:08]with a picture of it so okay that does actually make more sense that i uncle rob is the king of
[23:13]dirty jokes and you get a towel all right not gonna explain the whole joke again russell rolling go
[23:17]how's it going with you rolling going things are going well with me aaron traveled last week i also
[23:22]traveled last week i went to the windy city i went to chicago for a work trip and i extended i went a
[23:27]day early stayed a little bit of a day late so i thought i would share some of my adventures in
[23:31]chicago with you guys and see what you guys think of of these as some some more tourist activities
[23:36]as matt is one to do all right let's hear it i want to hear it so first day you guys know i'm
[23:41]on this quest to see all the baseball stadiums i've already been to wrigley before but the the
[23:47]game so i went and checked out a game at wrigley started in on some some drinks early in the
[23:53]afternoon is there a better place to go to a game and then hang out afterwards than wrigley field
[23:58]and wrigleyville i don't think so right take the train back home whenever you're ready to leave
[24:02]take the train in all that good stuff nope that's great yeah right in the middle of the neighborhood
[24:06]there's bars everywhere they redid everything so they've got all these cool new places to walk
[24:11]around and go to and yeah just the whole vibe is awesome that's it russell's just in a he's in a bar
[24:17]just all guys that look exactly like him he's like hey this is great this is a he's doing the
[24:21]spider-man meme i did realize i don't care at all about sports though when i was there i was like i
[24:25]need to stay for the seventh inning stretch be part of the community the wrigley community and
[24:28]sing the song and when that song's done i'm outie 5000 and i'm going to the bar i need to get out
[24:33]of there so i stayed for i stayed for the song and then i was i was on my way that's probably
[24:39]one of the damn cardinals 17 straight victories too so like forget it get out of there who needs
[24:43]to watch the cardinals win another one of my adventures along the way so gotta see the baseball
[24:47]stadiums also gotta go to top chef restaurants i went to not one but two this time oh wow i went
[24:53]to a restaurant called the girl and the goat which was run by stephanie izzard who won season three
[24:58]of top chef yeah of course of course and then i also went to a restaurant the sienna tavern
[25:03]that is run by the guy named fabio who was on one of the seasons of top chef he was one of like the
[25:09]famous guys on top chef but one of the things i was going to ask you is when i go to these
[25:17]empanadas duck confit octopus stuff that i don't have very often when you guys go to new restaurants
[25:22]do you always go back to your same old thing or do you always try something new i go i go back to
[25:28]well i mean kind of within reason but back to the same old thing so like i'm always trying to find
[25:33]like the best burger like if you think you know what the best burger is and this restaurant says
[25:38]they've got like a world famous burger kind of a thing i like to compare that or if you know if
[25:42]you get some some sort of pasta or something you always get somewhere i like to compare them
[25:47]i'm i'm not an adventurous gotta try the duck confit or whatever if i were to go to a top chef
[25:54]uh backed restaurant which i have not done for probably since last time i went with you
[25:58]yeah i'm usually either looking for something new i haven't had before or looking for the specialty
[26:02]of the house or if i don't know what to do then i typically ask the server or the bartender you know
[26:08]when you get a break what are you going to eat like what's your what's your choice off the menu
[26:11]that's that's that's usually what i what i go to but yeah i'm usually trying to figure out like
[26:15]something new and different something i wouldn't make at home
[26:17]and he hands you a pack of marble or reds and you're like oh this is what you're doing during
[26:21]the break oh those are good i do like marble reds yeah it's been a long time since i had one of those
[26:24]but those are tasty when in rome i've been to vegas for two years you guys were you guys were
[26:28]just talking to someone named russell he's not on the podcast you could refer to him as the r i'll
[26:32]tell you what the r i love going to a restaurant and getting something crazy mako sharks on the
[26:37]menu boom i'm eating it lizard you had mako shark those are the fastest shark in the world
[26:41]how'd they catch him i don't even know fast enough not to get caught and eat by rob not that fast
[26:47]undefeated hungry humans undefeated it's like i was telling the kids at school day i was eating a
[26:51]hard-boiled egg and i was like can you imagine the first person to eat an egg just like something
[26:55]comes out of an animal and you put it in your mouth like two out of three times that's a huge
[26:58]mistake like you were in big trouble that one time though great love it like yeah how did somebody
[27:03]ever find that marijuana is like the weed to smoke to make yeah how much think of how many
[27:08]things you had to smoke beforehand to figure it out like what else like were people smoking
[27:12]toothpaste before what were people's candlelands what kind of weeds are they smoking early humans
[27:17]did not have tiktok so what would you do like you're just sitting around all day it's like me
[27:21]think about when you were 10 when i was 10 i rolled up grass in paper and tried to smoke it with my
[27:26]friend steve i absolutely did that so i am me and neanderthals i totally get what they're doing like
[27:30]i it's i get it smoke everything see what happens why not the last thing the last thing i did on my
[27:35]trip matt has talked before about the hop on hop off tours i was in chicago and so i had a little
[27:40]bit of extra time on my last day and i decided to do an architecture boat tour of chicago where you
[27:47]all about all the buildings it was fantastic if anyone goes to chicago this is a must do you have
[27:52]to do the architecture boat tour have you guys ever done something like that there's a great
[27:56]architecture boat tour of new york that people have told me about i have done the i've done the
[28:01]architecture boat tour in in chicago it's wonderful it's beautiful it's just a smart way to just hang
[28:06]out and get on like get a get a sort of cheap boat ride and enjoy your enjoy your life i love it
[28:11]i just thought i would do it because it would make me sound cultured on my next date like if i said
[28:15]hey i went to chicago
[28:17]and i went to some restaurants and i also took an architecture tour like
[28:20]that's gonna demand something right it sounds better than saying i went to a baseball game
[28:24]and left after the seventh inning stretch and went to the bar like it does it does make you
[28:29]sound smarter yes that's all i got the r is done the r hopefully that was my melody that was my
[28:38]melody from the r during nice job the r we appreciate it the r okay matt rolling going
[28:43]how's it going rob if you don't start referring to the r you could get a smack for this
[28:47]i ain't no joke
[28:48]oh oh oh matt rolling going how's it going with you uh good i won't take up too much of the r's
[28:56]time here because you know if somebody's valuable the name like the r then we got to make sure that
[29:02]we're giving them all of our attention so all i got is you know all of our attention all of
[29:07]our attention yeah what no that's good dar i like it yeah uh i i think we've talked about this
[29:15]before there's there's
[29:17]not enough documentaries in the world i could watch i could just continually watch documentary
[29:21]take all that fiction crap throw it out the window if you've got a documentary is there a better
[29:27]genre of documentaries than like uh religious cults that have gone awry oh god i love it
[29:36]wild wild country a fantastic yeah i can't there's a new one on hbo about it always takes
[29:40]three episodes for them to be like and they would gather and they're wearing orange robes and dinner
[29:47]and then it's a fuck fest everyone's getting oiled up they're meeting in the room and they're
[29:52]fucking like crazy and that's just videos of like the most pubic hair you've ever seen in your whole
[29:56]life and everybody's dancing around they're like and they were fucking and sucking like crazy and
[30:01]you're like hmm i am learning things here i'm learning this documentary is very good and they're
[30:06]like the leader was fucking everyone and everybody's fucking everybody you're just like yes this is very
[30:11]good i hope that's mother-in-law confuses matt with rob tonight i'm gonna i can't wait for him
[30:15]to get a text about this that's what i call my penis
[30:17]so there's a new one on hbo called the way down and it's about this church in nashville
[30:24]yeah and you know i was gonna say much much to like rob's thing you know they all follow the
[30:30]same pattern right by the third one you figure all the stuff by the fourth one they kind of get
[30:34]into the person who's actually leading the cult and then they all you know nobody ever heard of
[30:40]these people before the age of like 22 right they have no friends from when they're in high school
[30:44]and realize like they're just messed up and you feel
[30:47]somewhat bad the same time you're like how the hell does anybody follow these people like let's
[30:52]just do a little bit of common sense but the way down it's only three episodes kind of ends
[30:56]abruptly for a for a good reason but but i'll tell you what i totally get how i could be in a cult
[31:01]after going to that uh physical therapist i had where he was like standing in front of the light
[31:05]and then do the gut smash because i was like okay because he was just telling me what to do and i
[31:09]was like i'll do that like he could have been like okay now you're gonna hold this picture of me and
[31:12]you're going to go out on the street and try to get other people to come in i'd be like all right
[31:17]we're you're talking to me we're hanging out i think that's great and then the third time he's
[31:20]like and now it's time for the fuck fest i'm like okay okay i could where do you want my knees is
[31:26]gonna help my muscles can i put my leg here yeah he's like i'm gonna grind your pelvis in a fuck
[31:31]fest yeah so i don't know i don't think i could i don't i'd like to believe that i would never
[31:39]fall for any of this and i think i've got a fairly but i i don't know i mean i don't get
[31:44]how people fall for these things matt and every time i could see you
[31:47]being the right hand man to the cult leader because you're very even keel and like you
[31:51]would be the one executing all the all the orders well i have talked to i have talked with uh our
[31:57]friend manny about this because he would be with his wild hair yes energy he would be the perfect
[32:04]cult leader matt's matt's cult would require proper grooming habits though rob you might
[32:08]not be allowed i bet well listen as long as i can get something that shows my level you know
[32:12]like the scarf or or like a certain outfit that shows that i'm like the main part of the cult
[32:17]during the fuck fest i think that's oh that's the other thing you know now the word you can
[32:22]rust i mean vr you can wear green now you know because you've reached the status of being vr
[32:28]you know and so now oh he's wearing green rosie he's still wearing just red i mean he's just you
[32:33]know he's not quite that level yet rosie you need to work a little harder to get up to the green
[32:36]level to get up to the r's level i just yeah i just don't get it i like this it really is it's
[32:41]like every documentary i've watched it's like we're gonna play volleyball and then fuck fest
[32:45]and then it's like uh we're on a
[32:47]boat and you're actually part of sea organ guess what on the boat it's a fuck fest you know it's
[32:51]i haven't i've not watched any of these documentaries because i don't think i could
[32:55]handle it but i did watch the docudrama uh waco and i forgot how because because i had to watch
[33:02]it because tim riggins was in it so i celebrated the entire catalog so i had to watch it for taylor
[33:06]kitch but i forgot how horrifically that whole thing ended but i by the time i got to the last
[33:11]episode i had to watch and uh i spoiler alert there were no fuck fests it was uh the
[33:17]sex in there was like um embarrassing and sad and then it ended horribly and now i never want
[33:23]to watch another cult movie documentary now there's a call never joined no there's a call
[33:27]i could be part of that called no problem sorry fuck the sad fuck fest or afterwards you're kind
[33:33]of like oh that wasn't i left my whole family for this like i gave these guys my entire savings
[33:38]and this is the fuck fest that i get jesus matt's matt's matt's cult would have a a three episode
[33:47]guarantee where if you didn't if you didn't enjoy the fuck fest you could get your buddy back and go
[33:51]home well with manny as our leader you're guaranteed greatest day leave that thing
[33:58]satisfied i like the idea of somebody saying i didn't really like that fuck fest it's like
[34:01]eating most of your meal and then be like i actually don't like this i'm gonna send it back
[34:04]i want to return once you've done the fuck fest you have to say you like the fuck fest like you
[34:08]can't be like you're like i did participate in the fuck fest the three-day orgy that we did
[34:12]i'm gonna guys guess what i'm gonna have to be out okay try to improve this fuck
[34:17]fest and i'll be back okay more tarps okay we ran out of baby oil after like two days i don't
[34:22]even see what i've got some other guys socks on i don't know what's going on there
[34:25]so gross the grossest part of an orgy would be putting on the wrong socks so gross
[34:35]yeah i could raw dog somebody's all day long put on the guy's socks
[34:40]gross speaking of putting on somebody else's socks i got guys i got some more physical trainer news
[34:47]let me get my phone my wife admitted something to me the other day oh no you can't take this back
[34:55]when she and speaking of this is it has to do with her back actually when she goes to the trainer she
[35:00]informed me while we were out to dinner with friends that when she is lying on her stomach
[35:05]and the trainer is getting ready to do that cupping where they put the suction cups on you
[35:08]this is after the gut smash after the light he unstraps her bra to do it right and i was like
[35:15]i don't like that like i don't like that but i can understand it because uh you know you're getting
[35:21]like a physical therapy because you're in a big room with like 10 other people there so she's
[35:25]taking off a bra face down but she could unstrap her own right she doesn't have to let someone else
[35:30]do it though yeah so she told me that he does it but then i the worst part is at the end of it
[35:38]he re-puts on her bra and that to me was a line too far that's too intimate yeah that's too intimate
[35:45]no you can't let him cross that line you gotta fuck that guy up rob i don't even think i've ever
[35:50]put on one of her bras i mean why would you why would you put a bra on that's terrible well okay
[35:55]well don't okay i've never put a bra her bra on her okay let's say we have to be very clear is
[36:02]wearing women's underwear a part of your turn i'm telling you guys right now like the fact that
[36:08]another man has strapped up my wife's bra really affected me i was like i don't this is this somehow
[36:14]seems more erotic
[36:15]when he's putting the bra back on yeah because it's too intimate man it's just like now he's
[36:19]he knows a thing about her like he's like i know how to put your bra on that's too intimate you
[36:23]can't let that go on he would be a very effective player at a fuck fest at the end right he just
[36:28]walked around helping people put their clothes back does anyone need their bra put back on
[36:32]if you saw if you were at a fuck fest right and you're watching some guy just rail your wife just
[36:37]for a while and you're like okay this is what i'm into and then at the end he was like i'm gonna put
[36:41]your wife's bra on you'd be like okay pal wait a minute wait a minute
[36:45]okay see the line i'm wearing a green wristband and that means i'm down for anything i am not down
[36:50]for you putting a bra on my wife i mean really i so people out there please text into the back
[36:56]line 802-277-2325 if some other person put a bra on you or your wife is that too far am i right i
[37:04]think i am right guys you're right 100 right that's too far all right so did they did they
[37:09]take or remove or any put any clothes for you did they pull your shirts down pulled any socks off
[37:14]for you or anything you're right i'm not down for you i'm not down for you i'm not down for you
[37:15]like that rob or not or put them back on they didn't but i think next time i'm gonna wear my
[37:20]socks because one of my favorite things in the whole world oh no is having somebody take off my
[37:25]socks i love it i when my kids were young i would say okay it's time to take off daddy socks and
[37:30]they would take off my socks and they would be happy it feels so good to me it's like getting
[37:34]tucked into a bed it just feels good right like somebody taking off my sock is if i was a
[37:41]billionaire i would hire somebody to take off my socks every night that's how good it feels like i
[37:45]only job is to take off my socks and i'd be like the r congratulations is that guy wearing a green
[37:51]suit is that is that like the green level you're able to take off rob socks yeah he would have one
[37:56]of the longest scarves i feel like everything we've done on yeah everything we've done on this
[38:00]podcast you know we're eventually rob's gonna get fired from it yeah but that what he just
[38:05]described there might be what the thing that actually it touches it over the edge it's up
[38:10]there yeah you guys picturing me lying on a bed fully clothed with somebody
[38:15]a regular bed or a water bed of course it's a water bed i'm living the best life i can are
[38:20]um and somebody taking off my socks that's the most offensive picture to you ever i just think
[38:26]the arousal you get out of it is i don't get arousal out of it i just like it it feels good
[38:30]excitement in your voice describing that a little bit as listeners a little bit you thought rob was
[38:35]aroused by someone taking off his socks please text the becks becks line with hashtag rob aroused
[38:40]if you feel you were slightly creeped out by that
[38:45]holding this conversation six one two two six nine back is that the number back line 69 69 okay
[38:51]so if you guys are doing a fuck fest you're gonna keep your socks on like a couple of sickos i don't
[38:55]think so but you take it off yourself i don't need somebody else to take off take off your own socks
[39:00]that's for suckers that's like go to the fuck fest in your flip-flops man like why don't like
[39:04]i don't think you even risk the socks because the thought of putting someone else's on afterwards
[39:10]would be would that would ruin the fuck you cannot go into a fuck fest barefooted and crocs
[39:15]absolutely not if i go to a fuck fest and it's a barefoot croc fuck fest i am out of there i have
[39:20]standards i got my car it's terrible in fact oh is that what aaron don't say like that at all
[39:27]there's only like two people in the world that could settle this and it's either little rosie
[39:32]and i still don't know why they call them little rosie magic mike 69 i mean those two are about
[39:38]the only ones that could the only other two that could maybe figure it out would be eric b and
[39:42]right let's talk about the album it's time for
[39:45]nobody's favorite part of the show let's talk about the album zero sex on this album wow yeah
[39:49]very little sex on this album it is it is crazy isn't it that you have a a rap album and i saw
[39:55]an interview with him where he said i wanted an album that they could play all day and all night
[39:59]and never have to like edit anything out or not play a part of it he's like part of the challenge
[40:04]was making clean rhymes to me and with that with rakeem i really felt a close bond because i was
[40:10]like being funny without being dirty is the greatest challenge to me of all time
[40:15]moving the crowd without smiling this whole this whole album is about not smiling
[40:18]he doesn't want you to smile i saw him live once no smiling so eric b and we're talking about eric
[40:23]b and rakeem and basically they met up because rakeem put out a like something in the newspaper
[40:28]was like i'm looking for new york's top mc and i'm scratching records and uh rakeem was like okay
[40:33]that's me and eric b was like yeah you are actually so let's make a record they came out and they
[40:38]released uh eric b as president and literally from that one single they got signed to island records
[40:45]what's interesting about rakeem is that he was actually a rapper that was listened to a ton of
[40:48]jazz so instead of the very um heavy rhymes on the end of a sentence like you would hear kind of
[40:54]normal early 80s rapping doing or maybe a guy who made a parody song like at seven at night and
[40:59]couldn't think of internal rhymes because it's actually really hard to do super hard he's not
[41:03]doing that he's doing internal rhymes rhymes in the sentence he's really the first guy to do it
[41:07]and now you hear it you know with nas and we hear it with uh eric uh with uh kendrick lamar i mean
[41:15]eminem yeah absolutely uh and so this this is kind of what a lot of people mark as really the
[41:21]beginning of the golden age or the epitome of the golden age of hip-hop from about 86 to dr
[41:27]dray and snoop in 93 and what i one thing i loved about this album is if you look at the cover
[41:32]right the cover they're actually wearing custom-made and it says it's quoted as saying
[41:38]custom-made gucci knock-ups by harlem taylor dapper dan so they're not knock-offs
[41:45]they're actually knock-ups because they're better guys do we need to get some knock-up
[41:50]sweatsuits and take some pictures for this podcast gold chains absolutely yeah for sure
[41:54]i gotta get some knock-ups i don't think any of my clothes are knock-ups whatsoever
[41:59]okay now russ has been on a couple dates where they've been knocked up but i i want the r has
[42:03]been on a couple dates where they're knocked up just one i think there's some he's not telling
[42:07]us about that's true he doesn't want to repeat his story he's like she's like i'm pregnant he's
[42:12]like oh i can't talk about this on the podcast get out of here i mean it's like it's like it's
[42:15]it would be embarrassing if i told you about the one where she told me and i went out with her like
[42:18]eight more times so i i kept that one to myself she's like i'm pregnant russ is like do you want
[42:25]to hear about gothic architecture guys that's funny that's good uh should we i'm begging now
[42:32]i'm begging i was waiting to say that i think uh rob that rob that that there that was ain't no
[42:38]joke that was no joke don't make me say he was not joking on this album he did not like the jokes
[42:45]from hip-hop at the time he was not going to tell jokes he wasn't going to rhyme for fun he was going
[42:49]to give you hardcore serious rhymes in a smooth laid-back tone of voice he was different than
[42:56]everything else that was going on out there well considering that one of his songs is just him
[42:59]listing his agent the record company and like every like it was like it was like reading a
[43:04]linkedin profile kind of like that was the beginning of the song i can totally see what
[43:08]you're saying all right oh i see why you said that russell you're giving me another transition
[43:12]that i totally ignored who made the transition i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know
[43:15]the r i'm gonna get that by i'm gonna get that by the end of the episode ain't no joke to start paid
[43:21]in full another great another great headphone album right you need headphones for this one
[43:29]yeah it's a great headphone album right i mean this album was made for headphones or a big
[43:35]booming sound system uh so they they made ain't no joke and they made a video for it or i ain't
[43:42]no joke they made a video for it russell guess who is featured
[43:45]in the video not responding flavor me by the proper name the r guess who was featured in the
[43:51]video flavor flavor flavor yeah boys i saw that i thought of you immediately we we talked about
[43:59]these guys a little bit when we talked about public enemy that these this album and i think
[44:03]it was the air p uh for president or air p is president's single which we're going to hear
[44:07]later which was the first single from the album that was the one that shook up new york hip-hop
[44:12]that chuck d heard that and said oh shit like we got to do something
[44:15]different everybody heard it and was like this we can't keep doing the same old thing
[44:18]aaron can you explain why this album in particular is such a big deal like why do why do so many
[44:24]people when they talk about the the roots of hip-hop this album comes up it's definitely
[44:28]rakim's rhyming although eric b was a great dj i i read a bit today it seems like maybe he didn't
[44:35]make all the beats necessarily maybe marley marl was involved like with eric b for president
[44:39]and um we'll talk about why that is later but it's rakim's rhyming he was the he was the
[44:45]one who changed up from even krs1 as great as krs1 was you know krs1's baltic leprechauns were
[44:52]brock's way to hip hip hop queens will always get dropped which is a great rhyme but rakim took it
[44:58]to another level people heard that and said this is different i have to figure out how to step up
[45:04]my game and then you can just clearly hear throughout this entire album even if you had
[45:08]never heard this album before so much of it sounds familiar you can hear some of it inspired you know
[45:15]uh dj jazzy jeff from fresh prince you can hear that for sure uh you know make him clap to this
[45:20]you can get a smack for this that voice has been sampled so many times um you know how can i move
[45:26]the crowd ghostface quoted that in a ghostface song just all of these um i read an article by
[45:33]tom bryan today that this album just became part of hip-hop's dna every rapper has heard this album
[45:38]and is quoting it throughout their entire career so it's rakim's kind of it isn't kind of you know
[45:44]you think of this is extremely simplistic but it kind of makes everybody's heard of you know you
[45:48]hear of rapper's delight right and it's kind of like this party dance song where everybody's up
[45:53]there and you're dancing in a line the soul train dance kind of thing and it's really kind of moving
[45:57]it to more of like a an artistic form that's not so much about the party but just about getting a
[46:04]message out am i am i saying that right i think you're right matt and i think but i i would build
[46:09]on that to say he was still he was about because he says how can i move the crowd he was still
[46:13]about how can i do this how can i elevate this art form and still make it danceable how can i
[46:19]still make people nod their heads you know he's still coming from that new york mc scene that we
[46:24]saw with public enemy and chuck d right yeah now aaron this this album might be influential but
[46:29]would you say that they needed these instrumental only cuts like eric b is on the cut does this have
[46:34]to be on the album these are skippable no no i yeah i tried to think about like what was the
[46:40]purpose of these dj cuts and i think i think some of it is that it's a it's a it's a it's a it's a
[46:43]it eric b was some of the eric b was connected right so eric b was the guy who was able to get
[46:52]the money together for this album so he got to have his cuts on the album and i think he was a
[46:56]talented dj but so i think he had so it's kind of like to shine it's kind of like if you started a
[47:00]podcast and then you would just demand everything goes the way you want even if it's been proven
[47:05]over and over that maybe it's not the best and then like maybe you push the boundaries every
[47:10]time until all of a sudden saying something like fuck fest that we would definitely have edited out
[47:13]of the first 10 episodes is now just normal stuff that we talked about since you're the one who paid
[47:17]for the pays for the site that this podcast gets built on and you're the one who's got all the
[47:22]the podcasting gear and everything then yeah yeah yeah if no i think that's it if my computer broke
[47:27]the podcast is literally over because rockin was in high school like rockin was in high school when
[47:32]he recorded half of this stuff so then eric b was the one with the connections and the and the money
[47:37]i think yeah my melody
[47:43]scratching is too abrasive for me here i know it's not as bad as some of the other instrumentals
[47:53]but the scratching isn't really in my wheelhouse i hear that i mean the highlights of this album
[48:01]are what the r is doing the other r not our the r the other r rockin was the other r we got the r
[48:10]yeah i know i figured that out i was just like hoping that maybe that would spring a conversation
[48:13]but it seems like maybe i need to reply to my own things yeah that's right rob you actually do so
[48:17]let's so here's the thing is that i aaron can i say would you say that this is still an album you
[48:23]want to listen to or is this more like it's so great because it's so influential because again
[48:30]i come into work every day i listen to the album once a day this was not one i especially look
[48:34]forward to to sitting down and listening there were some highlights i like bob my head but i
[48:38]would get to some of these and i was like i just i guess i don't know yeah me me personally
[48:43]i think it's and um matt you might have a different thought but me personally this was an album to
[48:48]study and appreciate um but i didn't love every minute of it there were definitely tracks that
[48:54]to me seem skippable or overly long but i think yeah it's something that we know every rapper
[49:00]listened to and built from but i don't know if it's like super enjoyable today matt what's your
[49:04]thought i i i would listen to it often you know i think more of like in the background kind of a
[49:13]it seems like i mean even the even the the instrumental music you know again i don't listen
[49:20]whatever happens in my brain i don't listen to the lyrics all that much it really is about the music
[49:26]for whatever reason and i so i don't i didn't mind the instrumentals i kind of enjoyed them
[49:31]personally so i like that perspective because i i wonder if this album as an album was intended for
[49:37]a dj to be able to throw on at a party and play the whole thing and people could just rock to it
[49:43]or somebody or somebody raps over the top of you know right he's got here so right yeah
[49:48]yeah i like the perspective i know you got soul so this is a good one you got it
[49:55]oh pump up the volume right that's when you like we all knew that we heard that like we
[50:00]know that voice from pop music we never knew it was brought in to run up and maybe we did
[50:04]you know that's what i've been doing in my life for the since i've been 30 is pumping up the
[50:09]volume but unfortunately i mean like volume in the scientific sense where literally i'm
[50:13]just getting bigger like that's the volume that's getting pumped up when you get when it comes to
[50:17]when it comes to pumps who's at a better run pump up the volume or the pump shoes back in the day
[50:22]what would have a better run the pump shoes or pump up the volume it's got to be the pump shoes
[50:27]i am telling you right now if i could get some shoes that had the orange or the tennis colored
[50:32]pumps right now i would wear them i thought they came back didn't they they did for a little while
[50:36]i i need them i had a pair of d brown d brown pumps back in the day remember when d brown pumped
[50:42]them up in the dunk contest
[50:43]with d brown covering up his eyes on the soles just picturing the r going up for a huge monster
[50:50]dunk wearing his pump shoes really it tickles it tickles me it does a mini windmill not not
[50:55]maybe not the full windmill but just kind of a mini down and up yeah i can see it maybe a two-handed
[51:00]yeah one thing i was thinking about with this is there's a lot of songs in here i think that
[51:04]are sampling james brown right and this is one of the first groups that did a lot of that i think
[51:08]but we listened to that james brown album and there were so many songs that kind of wrecked it for us but
[51:13]when you start seeing like all these hip-hop groups that are sampling james brown you almost
[51:17]think it's too bad there wasn't just one album of his because it needed to be higher right
[51:21]absolutely he is such a pioneer for all for all of hip-hop that it's almost too bad for our our
[51:26]purposes that he just didn't have one album they didn't have that i think it's just the nature of
[51:30]it they didn't have albums you know and so yeah and actually you're right because it does come
[51:34]from a james brown song called i know you've got soul so they didn't even change the name of the
[51:39]song they sampled it's actually bobby bird it's not technically james brown but here's i know you
[51:43]got soul
[51:43]oh such a funky
[51:47]but i think it's so funny this and i know you got soul was actually ranked by rolling stone as the
[51:54]23rd best hip-hop song of all time but it's so funny that you would sample a song and then just
[51:58]call it the same thing and not get caught for it not expect to like not expect that you're gonna
[52:03]you know but i think yeah i think that does speak to like how hyper localized hip-hop still was at
[52:09]the time hip-hop was still new york and they didn't
[52:13]think that james brown was gonna find out that they were gonna that they were sampling this stuff
[52:18]and they were gonna get caught they wanted to make hits that moved crowds in new york
[52:22]these dudes were super young these were kids making music that you know once they got their
[52:27]their deal and got their cash from their label that was what mattered to them i don't think
[52:31]they were thinking bigger than that no no they weren't they were not thinking like 10 steps ahead
[52:36]i agree if you were if you're a bunch of 40 year old guys you would definitely know more than to
[52:41]use copyrighted material on something that you were making
[52:43]like that would be so dumb if you were double the age and still doing this i can't believe it
[52:47]what if what if beck sampled his podcast and made his own podcast about music and he didn't change
[52:52]the name and it was called beck did it better we would sue his ass i'd sue his ass into the ground
[52:59]i actually know a very good attorney i would take that guy out to the woodshed okay you hear that
[53:04]back don't try to fuck with us moving move the crowd and to me it was interesting you brought
[53:10]up will smith aaron because this made me think of will i thought i was listening to will smith
[53:13]every time or yes will smith completely ripped off this flow listen to this
[53:19]yeah i mean this sounds like
[53:22]the heavy synths in the back and kind of summer madness like will smith completely jacked that
[53:32]line and i mean will smith can rap don't get me wrong i think he can flow but he totally still
[53:38]wrecking his flow from the top of the samples on this song it does sample uh the jbs james ronald
[53:43]backup band a song called hot pants road so they had multiple songs about hot pants that we didn't
[53:48]even get it to they loved hot pants so much they're like we got to write a bunch of fucking
[53:52]songs about hot pants and again i am still open to a song about body suits hit me up somebody um
[53:57]and they also on this song sampled eric b is president by eric b and rakim they sampled
[54:03]themselves that's how bad badass can you guys and stuff going i mean can you guys even imagine
[54:08]sampling yourselves like that is so that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis yeah i
[54:13]just that's what i agree here like it's just it's weird to me i couldn't imagine
[54:16]thinking you're so good that you would want to sample yourself it'd be like putting on your
[54:20]own socks after a fuck fest right no you guys don't get it putting on socks and actually i
[54:27]think putting on socks is one of the worst feelings you can have taking them on the best
[54:30]no it's true it's so great i didn't wear socks for a whole week last week i had to put them on
[54:33]on sunday to go to the airport felt awful you mentioned the word sample multiple times in
[54:37]honor of sampling i'm sampling a drink tonight yes and yes so what drink am i sampling you must
[54:43]be asking it's my understanding that eric b and rakim are from long island is that correct
[54:48]indeed i am drinking a long island iced tea i haven't had a long island
[54:52]oh no but i'm doing a long island do you guys want to hear what
[54:57]oh my god russell this is wow whoa a long island iced tea is like something you order
[55:04]right when you turn 21 and then you're like what the fuck was i doing doing this
[55:07]when you see him make it it's just like liquor liquor liquor liquor
[55:11]what's in it
[55:13]russell so what i read is supposed to go in it is gin vodka rum tequila
[55:18]gin vodka rum tequila and triple sec is what i i read okay i didn't have everything i had gin
[55:27]i had vodka i had rum i poured it into my mixer poured it in poured it in yeah i didn't have
[55:32]triple sec but i substituted with orange curacao because it had a similar looking bottle of similar
[55:37]looking color
[55:38]you think that's a fair substitution or not
[55:43]for sure i'm shocked that you can add tang and you're like let's get some orange i'll put this
[55:48]in too cherry flavor is that a fair substitution triple sec and orange curacao same thing different
[55:54]i don't know i have no idea i don't know but it doesn't sound right to me kind of like apples and
[55:59]oranges they're both fruits yeah they're different yeah they're both sour tomatoes put that in your
[56:03]drink too russell hold up this long island i want to see this thing oh my gosh oh it's on a low ball
[56:08]though so you're showing a little bit of you know uh restraint i like that the r nice job
[56:13]i'm using my new fancy ice cubes my big square ice cubes too oh my god that's like the one thing
[56:20]he has in his kitchen now is a big ice cube tray there's like a freezer and a big ice cube tray no
[56:25]blender no nothing no air fryer wow it's just that wasn't what you're right though long island was
[56:29]like the ultimate thing you would have as a younger person like what drink can i pay four
[56:33]dollars for and get really fucked up on it's that that drink with all the booze in it right do you
[56:38]think that the bartenders at the places that we went in college ever had any moral conundrums
[56:43]about doing things like mixing a long island i see for this 21 20 year old kid i think probably
[56:49]the fifth time they were cleaning um uh buffalo wing sauce off the pinball machine flippers because
[56:54]i had done both those things i think they were like i don't really care if i fucked up these
[56:59]kids brains for the rest of their life fuck you liver i think the quicker they got us to the point
[57:05]where we were drinking too many of those that's more tips for them ultimately in their do you
[57:13]like college kids like well i mean sober sober kids aren't gonna tip shit right i mean so you
[57:18]gotta get them a little bit tipsy to at least potentially open up they might forget and leave
[57:23]a dollar or two on the rail i agree that there was a lot of tipping because i saw multiple people
[57:26]tip down the stairs at the bar that bar they would just tumble on down and then we would just
[57:31]walk out not seeing if they were okay just just normal stuff paid in full thinking of a master
[57:38]plan oh what a great hope this one's awesome yeah so this was their most
[57:43]successful single this is actually the fifth single off this album so they didn't really
[57:47]kind of identify this as the best one but this became a huge hit for them and especially
[57:52]it got in the top 15 of the charts in germany netherlands and great britain it was a huge
[57:59]european hit because it was remixed by these guys uh in europe this band and it's called the seven
[58:05]minutes of seven minutes of madness uh remix so listen to this this is the remix kind of popular
[58:13]so it's a remix where they actually sampled the song and kind of twisted it around this would be
[58:20]a great song for a fuck fest wouldn't it rob oh yeah i don't know seven minutes though
[58:26]aspirational volume pump up the volume it's a good remix actually i like it it's nice
[58:33]um and i love it is that the same baseline it seems like the same baseline that um d light used
[58:41]right for
[58:43]groove is in the heart yeah do you know d light is only in the rock and roll hall of fame twice
[58:48]i looked and i counted how many times i saw d light isn't that an outrage they should be in
[58:51]there way more i could be wrong no response line seems familiar they i love on that song though
[58:57]they talk about there's a their part where they're talking about who their agent is and in the middle
[59:00]they're like yo we got to get out of here my girl is mad that this album took so long like i think
[59:05]it's funny where you have this rapper is like oh my god my we are fucking around in this album and
[59:10]my wife is pissed he was 19 years old that was probably his first album
[59:13]first girlfriend he was like yo this is my first love you know what she has a right to be pissed
[59:17]some of these songs in here are terrible let's just be honest it's not a good song like if you
[59:23]were married if you were if you were dating these guys and you knew this is what they spent a day on
[59:28]you'd be like what the fuck it would be like if i showed my wife like hey i noticed that you were
[59:32]editing a podcast instead of celebrating my birthday and then i played for like the velvet
[59:35]underground episode and i'd be like sorry about that she's like oh my girl's mad at me i think
[59:40]she's justified do you guys do you're why?
[59:43]do you guys just get mad at you for doing something and you know they're going to get
[59:46]mad when you're doing it and you still do it is there something that really just pisses them off
[59:49]for example me having to hop into bed tonight after this podcast i am terrified i might sleep
[59:54]in my kid's room their bed is not comfortable you talked about our top five fears earlier in
[59:59]the podcast that maybe might be one of them when we first got when we first were living together
[60:03]i didn't know that you had to hang up towels and not just stuff them in the sink
[60:06]she hated that i would put them in the sink i don't know
[60:13]guys i listen listen that's past rob he did not think about future rob the way i do now
[60:18]okay i would just put a towel in the sink and then the next time i take a shower i'd be like
[60:21]oh this towel's a little wet and then back in the sink it goes like no so what did you think
[60:25]would happen when other people had to use the bathroom they would come in like take your towel
[60:28]out of the sink and you just watch their hands and put it back in there the idea that you're
[60:32]thinking that i'm thinking about other people when i'm like 22 living in an apartment somewhere
[60:36]forget about it i was living with a woman who was attracted to me it surpassed every expectation i
[60:42]had of my life i was living with a woman who was attracted to me it surpassed every expectation i
[60:43]that i'm living with somebody who's like oh i find you attractive i was like nailed it towel
[60:48]goes in the sink this is the same time where i asked her to make me a sandwich in bed
[60:51]and she yelled at me about that matt what do you do that annoys your i don't know i mean i tend to
[60:58]like just leave a spoon out on the counter oh my god oh no not this i guess i would just put the
[61:04]spoon in there you know i don't know i don't know my wife gets mad at me because i keep bringing up
[61:08]a fictional story about her leaving the spoon on the counter over and over and over that's what
[61:13]i do to make her mad what are your big faux pas aaron aaron you were saying your wife is mad
[61:17]because your dick's so big it's yeah it's probably just that i'm too thoughtful and just um think
[61:23]ahead about too many things and just keep the whole house super clean and i'm like the guy
[61:29]in the interview like i care too much i work too hard i'm too hard on myself i am not i'm not
[61:34]engaging in this kind of conversation can you imagine being i just want to be imagine being
[61:38]aaron's wife at gmail.com okay you have just like done a real job aaron has got
[61:43]back from his two hours of work and he's like okay sweetie i got a plan for my record player
[61:48]i'm gonna put it on craig's list but i'm gonna ask him what the records are i mean like two
[61:52]like two minutes in i'd be like jesus christ can you go get covid and sleep in the garage again
[61:56]please i'm begging you i cannot take this oh please i do not do this to me secret is i just
[62:04]wear headphones around the house and anytime somebody tries to talk to me i can't hear it
[62:07]it's no problem leo yeah exactly as the rhyme goes on
[62:13]yeah and this is the kind of thing that it only is truly amazing when you hear it in context when
[62:34]you really hear what else was going on in the world at the time he was not doing anything like
[62:38]anyone else in this sort of monotone delivery he made a choice that's what i'm gonna do
[62:43]and i'm not going to tell jokes i'm not going to be extra loud or vary my voice to be charismatic
[62:49]i'm just going to rhyme the best rhymes and like it's impressive what he did sticking in his lane
[62:54]so i was thinking you know this is a dj and a rapper right so we i thought we could do a list
[62:59]of the best rapper dj duo songs of all time i'm here for it i love it this is my shit wrestle
[63:06]so excited rapper and dj i saw one on full house where they it was christmas and dj tanner was
[63:13]a bunch of presents does that work well there goes my top four on the list but hopefully i've got one
[63:17]last one in here let me look oh i'm so excited for this russell let's do it all right we're
[63:22]going to try to go in chronological order you guys were talking this was 87 i'm going to start
[63:26]with one in 1988 you guys uh i think marley marl is mentioned at one point in this album right he's
[63:32]called out in uh what song is it whatever check out my melody right here and he may or may not
[63:39]have produced eric be his president yeah but yeah marley marl was like the the producer
[63:43]figure in new york hip-hop so the first the first the first duo we're going to touch on is
[63:48]big daddy cane and marley marl this is this ain't no or ain't no half step 1988
[63:53]this is such a classic track you know the outcome and we've never had big daddy cane on any of our
[64:02]any of our lists or any of they're not on the list yet are they and big daddy cane had such
[64:06]a smooth voice this is such a nice nice beat so we always hear about big daddy cane being
[64:13]really influential what what sets him apart as a rapper and or what's what makes this such an
[64:17]influential group i think big daddy cane had this commanding voice he could tell a story he he was
[64:23]able to rap you know a little bit behind the beat and and then the pairing with marley marl was just
[64:28]like the perfect pairing of rapper and and beats you cannot ignore that big daddy cane also has
[64:35]one of the greatest names ever you cannot that's true if his name was fucking loser cane you would
[64:40]not think that he's one of the greatest rappers like but big daddy cane is one of the greatest
[64:43]rappers in the world i think big daddy right the name works every time i love he also in my i don't
[64:47]know this is true we'll have to look this up later but in my mind he looks a little bit like idris
[64:50]elba so i think he was just like a big handsome he did i was gonna mention he's just a huge dude
[64:55]so if you went you're in like a battle with him i mean he was just a physical presence compared to
[65:00]all these other guys and so kind of like kind of like biggie smalls a little bit where he just
[65:04]noticed him right away and then all of a sudden he's rapping and he's better than everybody else
[65:08]and so it just kind of added to the whole lore of him
[65:13]another cool name for a rapper for rob if he was a rapper would be
[65:15]rob bass and dj easy rock this is it takes two from 1988 oh yeah
[65:20]i heard i heard uh notorious big and i ran to that song
[65:27]this is a great song i still love it oh it's so good
[65:36]now do i know any words past the first verse absolutely not but i know that he's not
[65:43]internationally known and i also know that he's down to rock a microphone and one one interesting
[65:47]thing i read about this is there's a lyric in here where everyone thinks he's saying he can't
[65:51]stand sex that's not what he's saying he's saying he's referring to cess which is a slang term for
[65:56]dope did you guys know that yes because dr dr j famously claimed that he doesn't smoke cess and
[66:02]then three years later he made an album called the chronic so yeah if somebody offered me cess
[66:06]on the street i would be like okay socks or no socks
[66:11]i love you
[66:13]next up on the list you guys mentioned this duo we have to touch on this one this song
[66:22]um early 90s here we have dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince i know they've got a lot of hits but
[66:27]to me we're going with the theme song from the tv show fresh prince here now have you heard their
[66:33]song about freddie krueger it's actually pretty scary that's about a one-year anniversary from
[66:37]that disaster rob sat down and i'd like to take a man and just sit right there i'll tell you how i
[66:42]became the prince of a town i'd like to take a man and just sit right there i'll tell you how i
[66:43]You can tell he spent hours, hours and hours listening to paid in full.
[66:48]Like, I'm sure he listened to rock him.
[66:49]I got to give it up again.
[66:51]The name DJ Jazzy Jeff, an all time name.
[66:54]Like, it's so good.
[66:55]That's a banging beat.
[66:56]Like, those dudes, those dudes are, they're hip hop, man.
[66:58]They did it.
[66:59]DJ fucking idiot Jeff does not work.
[67:02]This is not the same.
[67:03]It doesn't hit.
[67:03]No.
[67:05]Next up on the list.
[67:07]Nope.
[67:08]Shut up, Rob.
[67:09]Next up on the list is DJ Pete Rock and CL Smoove.
[67:13]Yes.
[67:13]This is They Reminisce Over You from 1992.
[67:16]And this definitely has kind of that jazz feel with the rhymes over it, doesn't it?
[67:26]Yeah.
[67:26]And the saxophone loop is one of the greatest beats of all time.
[67:30]There's so much more happening.
[67:32]Tribe Called Quest.
[67:34]T to the R-O-Y.
[67:35]And then last on the list is.
[67:39]We talked Missy Elliott a week or two ago when they did the new list of the top 500 songs.
[67:45]Get your freak on.
[67:46]We're not going to do that song, but this is Missy Elliott and Timbaland, Work It.
[67:50]Check this song out.
[67:51]Oh, boy.
[67:51]There's so much happening in this beat.
[68:00]One of the crazy things.
[68:03]Do you ever know what she was singing there?
[68:05]What is that gibberish?
[68:06]I don't know.
[68:07]Do you guys know that?
[68:07]I don't know.
[68:08]It sounds like they're playing the voice back.
[68:10]Backwards or something?
[68:10]Yeah, they're playing the voice backwards.
[68:12]We've talked about all these other songs where people have thought there's backwards stuff.
[68:15]Rob, who was the.
[68:16]Was it.
[68:17]Led Zeppelin.
[68:18]Simon or Garfunkel or one of those dudes played the solo backwards too, wasn't it?
[68:23]Oh, yeah.
[68:24]They played the bass solo.
[68:25]Simon or Garfunkel, one of those dudes.
[68:27]Yes.
[68:27]Garfunkel's Graceland.
[68:29]That famous album has the bass solo where it goes forward and backwards.
[68:32]Ruined my bass playing career forever.
[68:34]Yeah, but I never knew that was just the lyrics from the chorus backwards.
[68:38]I thought that was super cool.
[68:39]Yeah, that's true.
[68:39]It's brilliant.
[68:40]That song always intimidated me, though, because she was like, I'm going to see how if you got a big dick, let me search it.
[68:46]And I was like, well, see, then the jig is up.
[68:47]Like, you know, when I'm sending you that little when I'm sending the Tabasco bottle and it's just a little one and then she's actually searching for it.
[68:54]You know what?
[68:55]I hope Google's down that day.
[68:56]I'll just put it that way.
[68:57]So that's that's the end of the list.
[69:00]Best DJ DJ rapper combos.
[69:02]I think it's a pretty good list.
[69:03]Yeah, you can't beat that.
[69:03]It's a great list.
[69:04]You could just go into a huge rabbit hole for that.
[69:07]So you did.
[69:07]You did great, Russell.
[69:08]You did great.
[69:10]It's tough to narrow it down.
[69:11]There's a lot of there's so many good ones.
[69:13]This is coming from MC fucking idiot Rob and DJ the R.
[69:17]That was an all time list.
[69:19]Nice job.
[69:19]That was another better list by R.
[69:24]That was easily a top five list.
[69:27]Oh, yeah.
[69:28]Excellent.
[69:30]You know who my favorite MC is, though?
[69:32]MC Escher.
[69:33]The stairs.
[69:34]What do you mean?
[69:35]Oh, what do you mean?
[69:36]Oh, you're setting up Aaron for another inappropriate thing on the next song.
[69:39]Yeah, Aaron, you sicko.
[69:40]I can't believe it.
[69:41]Aaron, what is this next song?
[69:42]You said you had a funny bit.
[69:43]I know.
[69:45]I'm this one's problematic.
[69:46]You know that this this whole I don't know.
[69:48]This is not just skip Chinese arithmetic.
[69:50]I mean, play it.
[69:51]Play it.
[69:51]Play the song.
[69:52]It's fine.
[69:53]I mean, no, it's not fine.
[69:55]Is this the one where there's this water dropping all over?
[69:58]Yeah.
[69:59]It made me have to go to the bathroom.
[70:01]Instrumental.
[70:02]Right.
[70:02]This is the worst song we've heard on the list so far.
[70:06]I don't even think it's close.
[70:07]Even with Velvet Underground compared to like.
[70:09]Rubbing the chair.
[70:10]There's a part where you're just.
[70:12]It sounds like you're just listening to people take a shit.
[70:15]There's just water drops.
[70:16]I don't even know what this song is.
[70:18]This is so bad.
[70:19]It almost should knock this album down off the list.
[70:23]This song is terrible.
[70:24]This is number three after you go to that PT.
[70:27]I can't argue.
[70:29]Yeah, that one does not age very well.
[70:32]I'm going to say that it says that they sampled an ACDC song in there, though.
[70:35]I did not hear it unless it's the ACDC song where they just go.
[70:39]It's probably in the.
[70:41]I bet it's the drums, right?
[70:42]Is it Thunderstruck?
[70:43]No, it's flick of the switch, which I've never even heard of, but sounds incredible.
[70:46]I've never heard of that one.
[70:47]Okay, let's do Eric B is president.
[70:50]Right.
[70:51]So this is the first single, right?
[70:52]This was the first song.
[70:54]Well, this was the they released this as a single kind of as like just independent.
[70:59]And then they heard this and got signed at Island with Russell Simmons.
[71:03]Right.
[71:04]This is the one you can kind of hear.
[71:05]It's not recorded as well as some of the other songs.
[71:07]Like it sounds a little different.
[71:09]But this is the one that got them all started on this album.
[71:11]Oh, yeah.
[71:17]And this is just this is where you can hear that the music just lives in him.
[71:20]He can he can do nothing but rhyme.
[71:22]And I think we're going to listen.
[71:25]Let's listen to this whole song.
[71:26]This is a the extended beat.
[71:29]It's the beat from Move the Crowd.
[71:30]Just the beat of it.
[71:32]I mean, we're in we're in an Eddie Murphy movie right now.
[71:36]This one, aren't we?
[71:37]This is Beverly Hills Cop.
[71:38]I don't.
[71:39]I work with a partner and I'm definitely not working with this guy.
[71:42]I think this is definitely a TV show intro, right?
[71:47]Like different world or one of those.
[71:50]Like, I feel like this.
[71:51]OK, well, let's try it.
[71:51]Let's try it.
[71:52]Hey, guys.
[71:53]Seinfeld bass.
[71:54]What's the deal?
[71:55]What's the deal with fuck fest?
[71:58]You know, I'm at a cult.
[72:00]I got three days, three days in.
[72:02]I'm trying to get a scarf.
[72:03]I'm trying to move up.
[72:04]Meanwhile, this guy over here is talking about a fuck fest.
[72:06]I only brought five pairs of socks.
[72:09]I can't.
[72:09]I can't wear three of them because I'm not going to have enough to go home.
[72:12]OK, I got to leave a note for myself.
[72:13]Rob, the part where you made fun of the person for not getting any laughs during their standup.
[72:18]And then you just did a Seinfeld bit that also got no laughs.
[72:21]Edit that earlier story out.
[72:22]So it doesn't actually seem ironic.
[72:24]All right.
[72:25]That is it for Paid in Full.
[72:28]And if anyone got this far on the podcast and got the irony of that joke, please text hashtag ironic to the backslide.
[72:34]Nobody's listed.
[72:36]Let's list.
[72:37]Let's do Russell's.
[72:39]Part that he always thinks it is.
[72:40]It's the rating.
[72:41]The R's favorite part.
[72:43]It's the rating system.
[72:44]I really thought this would catch on much easier for you guys.
[72:47]I don't know what happened.
[72:48]Oh, how did I not say the R over your list?
[72:50]I might add that in later.
[72:52]Oh, yeah.
[72:54]All right.
[72:56]The R.
[72:57]We'll start with you.
[72:57]What did you think of Paid in Full?
[72:59]Album number 61 on the list.
[73:02]I really liked a handful of the songs.
[73:04]I thought it was fun to listen to.
[73:05]But to me, there are two to three songs that I just think are not very.
[73:09]Very entertaining to listen to that one we hear near the end where there's just water dropping in a toilet or a bucket or something.
[73:15]I don't understand it.
[73:17]Why would water be dropping in a toilet?
[73:19]Where is that water even coming from?
[73:20]Wait, figured it out.
[73:22]Never mind.
[73:22]Figured it out.
[73:23]My bad.
[73:23]Either way, for me, I understand how this is very influential.
[73:29]I can see where it is influential.
[73:32]But for me, I just didn't really enjoy listening to a number of the songs.
[73:36]And if you're going to have bad songs like that, to me, it's too high on the list.
[73:39]So I'm going to say it's Rolling Grown.
[73:41]Oh, my God, I didn't even introduce it, Russell.
[73:43]How did you know what the categories were?
[73:45]Well, Aaron's going to go next.
[73:46]So, Aaron, I'll explain it to you.
[73:47]Is this Rolling Well Tone?
[73:48]That means it is perfect at 61.
[73:50]Okay, it's actually great.
[73:51]It's at the perfect place.
[73:53]This is right where it should be.
[73:55]Guess what?
[73:55]It's not quite as good as Astral Weeks, but it's a little bit better than whatever album is coming up next.
[74:00]Big mystery.
[74:01]Stay till the end of the show.
[74:02]Yeah, right.
[74:02]Nobody's listening.
[74:03]Or is this a Rolling Bone?
[74:05]Okay, this should have been way higher than 61.
[74:07]Okay, maybe flip it around.
[74:08]16.
[74:09]Think about it.
[74:10]That's the perfect number of people, if you know what I'm talking about.
[74:14]Or is this a Rolling Grown?
[74:16]Okay, so, again, you walk into the Fuckfest, you hear this, and you realize, oh, they must be listening to Eric B. and Rakim.
[74:22]That is a Rolling Grown.
[74:28]And so, hey, guys, what's going on?
[74:31]Has anybody seen?
[74:32]I'm wearing black socks.
[74:34]They're zero laughs.
[74:39]Do you honestly think you could handle a 16-person Fuckfest?
[74:42]That seems like a lot for a middle-aged man to deal with.
[74:46]I can barely handle a one-person trying to be quiet in my living room Fuckfest.
[74:52]Those get out of control sometimes, and I get feelings.
[74:55]You've got a lot of windows.
[74:55]My thoughts about this album are that I agree with Russell.
[74:58]There are some definite skippables on here.
[75:02]But I also agree with Matt that if you want to just put this album on and let it run, it's a pleasant sound.
[75:08]I love the beats.
[75:09]I think Eric B. did a great job in Marley Marl and the tracks he may or may not have produced.
[75:15]And I think Rakim is such an important figure in hip-hop.
[75:19]You hear echoes of this record in everything that came after this one.
[75:24]Every rapper worth his salt, his or her salt, quoted Rakim, listened to Rakim, took from this album.
[75:30]So I have to say this is Rolling Well Toned.
[75:33]Matt, what do you think?
[75:34]Rolling Well Toned, Rolling Grown, or Rolling Boned?
[75:39]I'm going to go with Rolling Well Toned.
[75:41]I feel like I'm making it too simplistic.
[75:46]But I go from the New York rap scene of hearing Rapper's Delight into Run DMC, into A Tribe Called Quest, into Wu-Tang and all of that.
[75:57]And this is the linchpin between all of that.
[76:01]It kicks off moving into what we know as the heyday of the New York rap scene.
[76:09]I think it's awesome.
[76:11]I love listening to it.
[76:12]So I'm just going to go with Rolling Well Toned.
[76:15]Guys, the correct answer, by the way, is this is Rolling should be in a museum.
[76:21]A museum?
[76:23]Yeah, you can't listen to this without listening to the future of hip-hop.
[76:25]This is like going into a museum and seeing a mausoleum.
[76:29]You're kind of like, I wouldn't want that in my apartment now, but I probably should learn about it.
[76:33]Like, it's kind of a cool thing.
[76:34]You can hear it when you hear Public Enemy, Will Smith, Nas, Kendrick.
[76:38]It all starts with this album.
[76:40]I think this is a legitimate, like, like root for all of hip-hop.
[76:44]It's everything you said better.
[76:46]I'm going to say it worse.
[76:46]And that's the way it goes.
[76:47]So next up, that is it for this week.
[76:50]Next up, we have an album that makes me think about my mortality.
[76:55]Because you're going to die.
[76:58]It's Appetite for Destruction.
[76:59]We got Guns N' Roses coming up.
[77:02]Oh, yes.
[77:02]I'm so excited.
[77:05]It's back.
[77:07]It's too amazing.
[77:08]What is that whistle thing?
[77:10]I'm going to do a parody song where it is the original words to Paradise Cities.
[77:15]The original words?
[77:17]Yeah.
[77:18]What was it again, Russell?
[77:19]The original words?
[77:20]Girls are something that got fat and they got big titties.
[77:23]Perfect song.
[77:25]Matt, I was thinking if we do end up going to that same party together this weekend,
[77:29]we should put our names on our socks so your mother-in-law doesn't get them confused when she does her laundry afterwards.
[77:34]It's my mom.
[77:36]My mom does my laundry.
[77:37]My mom.
[77:38]Oh, my God.
[77:40]I almost passed out again.
[77:41]That was so funny.
[77:42]Picturing you guys going to a party with names on the socks.
[77:46]Again, a red flag for a fuck fest.
[77:47]Walk in and high five.
[77:48]All right.
[77:49]Here we go.
[77:50]Is that you under the mask?
[77:52]I can't tell.
[77:53]Wait, you're wearing the mask from the Jim Carrey movie?
[77:57]Smoke it.
[77:57]Do you shave your legs, Russell?
[77:58]Somebody stop me at this fuck fest.
[78:04]Meanwhile, Aaron looks over and he's like, hey, there's a sea turtle.
[78:06]Oh.
[78:08]What?
[78:09]That's a good one.
[78:09]All right.
