[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by

[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the

[00:09]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research

[00:14]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it better

[03:57]aaron i

[03:58]rob take your headphones off

[04:08]you know picking this

[04:09]listen jack

[04:11]beck did it better

[04:13]the pitch correction was up to 75 on that song

[04:16]i'll say it right now

[04:17]it was way up there for that one

[04:19]uh and i'm so glad that aaron's brother's not here to hear that song

[04:22]because it wasn't about him that piece of shit

[04:24]all right

[04:25]all right

[04:25]this is beck did it better

[04:27]and i am lucky to get the podcast to get back and give us some voicemails you jerk

[04:31]well if you thought last week's voicemail was short wait till this week's uh i've got three

[04:37]guys here and they want to talk about the eagles hotel california and let's face it folks at this

[04:43]point they legit are the people i see the most in my life probably some of my best friends and from

[04:49]now on i'm going to be mean to them and shatter all the goodwill that i started this show with

[04:53]i've got russell in minnesota russell how are you doing

[04:55]well rob there you stand with your little head in your hand your baby's gone and you're all alone

[05:01]and you end where lenny kravitz bends

[05:04]see here's the thing everybody's like oh rob you're so gross you talk about this

[05:12]i get set up i swear to god like this is like you hand me a gun and you

[05:18]push me into a bank and then you're like oh what are you doing robbing me it's not my fault

[05:22]i want the show to be good i want the show to be clean i want to be sweet to each other

[05:25]it's not my fault eagles got dirty lyrics that was not on me matt in minneapolis matt how are

[05:32]you doing tonight uh good rob i just want to tell you take it easy don't let the sound of your own

[05:37]voice drive you crazy it never has not once it's never has oh my voice is so sweet uh even though

[05:45]i've been announcing a power lifting me today for 10 hours and it's hashed it still sounds great

[05:49]and i've got aaron out in california who i edited out but he said my song i did sucked aaron you

[05:55]son of a bitch that's so terrible by the way i forgot aaron was telling me earlier that he pirated

[06:00]a movie the other day he pirated a movie he he pirated it he gave it 3.14 stars oh i'm reading

[06:07]like that one

[06:12]man i'm just i'm excited to be here with three guys who are hard-headed brutally handsome and

[06:22]terminally pretty let's talk about eagles yeah

[06:25]i the sad thing is is i know all these songs and i listened to this album exactly once in

[06:30]preparation for this episode i was like i know this one i know every song in this album and i

[06:35]was like what the fuck i listened to a lot of our veins like this this is like this was in the

[06:39]vaccines we got when we were kids that's what that's what was in our vaccines it was can you

[06:44]guys excuse me captain please bring me my wine oh my god a cirque du soleil guy just flipped over

[06:52]and brought him some wine that's so crazy that's a great trick um

[06:55]all right let's get into the voicemail

[06:58]i just go yes just say i'm so stupid kiss my ass

[07:06]they're just the dumbest of the dumb

[07:08]just the dumbest of the dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb shit listeners

[07:14]like listeners like dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb shit listeners like listeners

[07:18]i think this goes back to the original stevie wonder episode honestly that song that matt did

[07:24]for that still one of the highlights of this podcast just an incredible just like i'm trying

[07:29]to think of another artist that literally just made one song and it's the greatest thing ever

[07:32]created i can't former how did i think of that it was my first dance at my wedding

[07:40]the voicemail don't blink or you'll miss this one

[07:44]yes of course the ghosts are dead pac-man you dumb shit all right so that is a caller

[07:51]replying to my question which i forgot about

[07:54]are the ghosts in pac-man dead pac-man here's what i here's what i don't understand that had

[07:58]to be magic mike was that magic mike that called him no it was actually maybe a sister of mine so

[08:03]here's the thing somebody called me a dumb shit doesn't bother me didn't think about it doesn't

[08:08]doesn't matter to me not a big deal they're not the same shape why i don't i don't think she's

[08:14]right yeah they don't look anything like pac-man plus they have names right inky blinky pinky and

[08:21]sue okay like there was so so who are they and the other and the other guy's name pac-man like

[08:27]you wouldn't change your name just because you gave him a ghost right like you wouldn't go from

[08:30]rob the man to randy the ghost you'd be rob the ghost doesn't make any sense yeah i always thought

[08:37]it was pac-man like that was his last name roy pac-man or something dude if you guys just go to

[08:44]google right now and see what's on your google holy shit bro what it's fucking pac-man on there

[08:51]the google but like the google artwork right now is pac-man ghosts it's ghost guys that is some

[09:00]freaky ass shit right there wait a minute now and they're eating cherries the thing that pac-man

[09:06]loves apparently like he loves dots and he loves cherries but here's the thing pac-man is his last

[09:11]name right because ms pac-man that's her last name they're are they married or are they just

[09:18]related why would they should be ms if they're not married guys

[09:21]this is opening up a whole thing up do you guys like playing pac-man you guys had a ms pac-man game

[09:26]in college right uh arcade i got i got the sit down one right here i got i got one right here

[09:32]i play it all the time we we had not been interviewed to be part of that group that

[09:36]could live in that pot at that point so we did not live with that when he had the uh we bought

[09:40]yeah we we got together uh we got together and bought a pac-man game from my mom's basement and

[09:46]now so when we go visit my mom there's a pac-man down there it's great oh my god is is that your

[09:51]favorite old school arcade game or is there a better one you know me i love joust i don't think

[09:56]i would buy a joust cabinet though it's pretty repetitive like the game it's trying to jump on

[10:00]people's heads while they're riding birds is there a tetris arcade game because that would be that

[10:04]would be really cool that'd be i'll tell you if you have a nintendo switch tetris 99 is one of the

[10:09]greatest games ever invented you played tetris against 98 other people oh it's so good and now

[10:15]i found a website where you can play group tetris games at school so i invite the kids to play

[10:19]tetris against me and i fucking love it

[10:21]smoke their asses every time i said all of you are playing for second place and they're like what

[10:26]and then i just dropped the fucking hammer on him oh god it feels so good just to beat their ass in

[10:30]tetris they're like i don't even know how this game works i'm like bam bam bam bam giving them

[10:34]the business i don't know but pac-man pac-man fandom.com says it appears that the majority of

[10:40]ghosts are former pac people but usually bear no resemblance to their living selves and apparently

[10:46]they come in a wide variety of colors and types apart from the usual standard ghostly appearance

[10:51]it says pack people the majority of ghosts are former pack people but why would you even say

[10:58]pack people pac-man's his last name it's not pac-miss pack woman pac-man is his name his name

[11:06]is mr pac-man right but you know what maybe their first name was inky and blinky maybe his name was

[11:13]inky pac-man and he died and that's why he's a ghost holy shit guys this is getting deep well

[11:18]the fact that it's on the google it's on the google art right now it's got me creeped out

[11:22]i'm gonna admit that like what's what's the best old school arcade game donkey kong not as good

[11:28]as pac-man right nope space invaders no i do love asteroids but it's kind of that's kind of old

[11:34]school space invaders is close though space invaders is fucking rad you know at the dave

[11:38]and busters here in time square they have a pac-man game that is 20 feet tall so that when

[11:44]you play it everyone can see you playing it it's absolutely humiliating for somebody to be like oh

[11:48]look at this dumb shit he's getting cornered by inky and blinky it's the worst

[11:52]we might need to move it along i'm just staring at wikipedia articles on the back

[11:59]ghost now we gotta move it along this is the problem with their fucking listeners these

[12:02]dumb pieces of shit they call leave a message no question they don't want to bring up who wasn't

[12:07]the show better guess what it's your fucking fault you dumb piece of shit start being better

[12:10]fans and start asking better questions technically i think that's two weeks in a row where our dumb

[12:15]shit listeners have called in with statements and not questions

[12:18]two weeks in a row well what do you think you guys are like first row of the lecture hall

[12:25]type people that's not a question it's a statement yeah those are gunners they just need to be heard

[12:30]yeah we're correcting everybody all right let's get in let's end let's let's end this disaster

[12:36]let's get into rolling

[12:37]thank god your brother stay around for this one everybody's up to it it's time for rolling going

[12:47]rolling going

[12:48]rolling going russell how's it going with you things are going well i was playing miss pac-man

[12:55]no hold on so the other night i went to you guys know i love going to see new things and i went to

[13:03]the history theater the other night have you guys ever been to the history theater in st paul before

[13:07]the history theater what so the history theater actually had a musical show going on and i thought

[13:13]i had to go see it it was called buddy the buddy holly story so a musical the

[13:18]buddy holly musical have you guys ever like they did the movies i think right rob is that is that

[13:23]correct wait what they mean they did the movies about buddy holly yeah yeah i think so uh yeah

[13:31]um what's his name was in it the um gary bucey wasn't he buddy holly yeah there you go was he

[13:36]really oh yeah before he had his motorcycle accident he lost his mind and turned into a big

[13:41]weirdo so it was the musical at the the history theater all about buddy holly so they're doing

[13:47]all the buddy holly songs it's kind of the story of how he became you know a big star and then

[13:52]right through the end of his life which we've talked about numerous times before but it was

[13:57]actually interesting because we discussed the end of buddy holly's life i can't remember how did he

[14:01]pass away but so it was interesting like when you go to a uh like if you go to certain concerts

[14:06]you you might be the the the oldest person there like matt's going to be going to smashing pumpkins

[14:12]coming up in a few weeks and he's probably going to be right in the median age group of who's going

[14:17]to be at a concert like that i would think right there's going to be lots of local not even just a

[14:21]little bit younger than the average i i will say this when you've got a couple years younger when

[14:27]you've got hair that's as white as mine and you go to a theater and everyone looks older than you

[14:31]you're like oh shit and that must be a sign that you're at a buddy holly musical because i was

[14:37]there was a lot of old people it's the most old people i've seen in one location

[14:41]i think in my entire life is the buddy holly musical at the history theater i think it would

[14:46]be nice if just next door to the history theater they just had a graveyard it was like listen we're

[14:52]just skipping the middle man everybody come on over just hop into one of these graves covering

[14:56]up we're done hope you enjoyed the show time for the like a two for one warm embrace of death to

[15:02]come on here we go that's the encore it's you in a grave put whatever you want on the tombstone

[15:07]we'll throw it in for free yes you get by the wheelchair row seat and then the tomb in a bundle

[15:14]russell sits down he's like this is so weird this is the only spot in this theater that's not a

[15:20]wheelchair see i don't get what's going on here so anyway so the musical was actually really good

[15:26]the the they come out and so they're telling the story of buddy holly and the crickets and i thought

[15:31]i could share some of the stuff i learned about buddy holly because we've talked about him and his

[15:35]compatriots that have i believe as rob put it died in a plane crash we've talked about them a number

[15:42]of times right as rob put it i prefer to say they had a smash hit there aren't that many other ways

[15:47]to put it but yeah but so i was curious uh do you guys ever you know so like the big hit he had was

[15:55]peggy suit right do you even do you know that that was supposed to have a different name for

[15:59]that song before they called it peggy suit did you know that really i don't know that

[16:03]the actual name for the song originally was called cindy lou

[16:09]and they changed it because one of the guys in the crickets one of the members of the band

[16:14]was kind of you know trying to hook up with a lady named peggy sue and he said hey if we change the

[16:20]name it'll probably help me with this girl they changed the name becomes a huge hit and he ended

[16:26]up marrying the girl peggy wow did you guys know that that's no that's that's fascinating that

[16:32]reminds me of the time i was trying to have sex with beck and you guys will never believe the

[16:36]scheme i came up with

[16:39]it's so crazy it just might work 118 episodes later

[16:44]microphone you want to milk me back

[16:47]so another interesting thing i learned about buddy holly is you guys know the song every

[16:55]day rob i think you have that maybe we can pull that up get some blockage feel on there

[16:58]it's funny like i didn't know this was a buddy holly song i know i should know that but i didn't

[17:03]know this was buddy holly welcome to rexman this is on the beginning of welcome to rexman

[17:09]you guys

[17:09]yeah oh i haven't watched the head show like it oh god this is such a good song i mean it really

[17:15]is like this could come out now and it would be a hit i think a couple of the interesting things

[17:20]about the sun do you know what the sound is do you know what that percussion sound is

[17:24]okay let's listen like a hand clap no it's not is it i'm not gonna say what i think it is okay

[17:30]we had too much of the last episode i think it's him beating his little buddy

[17:36]it is actually

[17:39]uh for me it is actually them just patting their legs patting their jeans because the drums were

[17:45]too loud for the song oh that's beautiful and it was actually the producer's wife is playing some

[17:51]type of mini piano that's that kind of like it almost sounds like a kid's xylophone type thing

[17:57]in the background wow it's a mini piano that is so interesting i will say i think i'm suspicious

[18:02]though because at this at the end of the song the patting the leg speeds way up and then you can hear

[18:06]him breathing pretty hard for the last five seconds or so and then he falls asleep really

[18:10]quickly so i'm a little i don't know what's going on and they were trying to get in they're trying

[18:15]to get into the studio but the door was locked and so why is the door yeah oh just uh wait a

[18:20]second wait a second i uh i was watching tv oh that's weird the tv's off why is everyone lying

[18:26]down why does it smell like mulch in here i try guys i really try to not be like this i i don't

[18:36]know so i learned all these interesting things about buddy holly's music but i also learned

[18:41]something about him as a person so he met his future bride and they got engaged within five

[18:48]hours of meeting each other what are your guys thoughts about someone who gets engaged after

[18:53]five hours final engagement your thoughts did it work though they were still married when he died

[18:59]right i mean he died that's terrible did it work yeah he got to fuck i mean guys that's why he

[19:06]did it right it's the same reason i had kids get married when they were 18 from my high school

[19:11]they wanted to go to the bone zone okay that's what buddy holly okay he was thinking about every

[19:18]day sliding that salami into his wife it's what do you it's the only reason you get married after

[19:23]six hours right like come on would it be possible for you to meet somebody and get engaged in six

[19:29]hours well buddy holly did it i did it i think it would for me i think i would do something like

[19:35]that that sounds like something i would do i would do something like that that sounds like

[19:36]something i would go for just be like yeah fuck it why not let's get married like

[19:39]i i want to become the mayor of pound town like let's do this shit you know what i mean

[19:44]i don't know russell what about you i mean it's okay never mind i'm gonna ask you russell

[19:50]technically i need more than five hours yes it seems that way yes

[19:55]empirical evidence would show that the five-hour limit has not worked for me historically

[20:01]i don't know just try it russell next day just be like let's get married

[20:04]but the first five girls

[20:06]i did propose to within five hours it was going well up to that point so technically i don't know

[20:12]what turned us the wrong way i think when i think when they're getting in their car and you chase

[20:16]after them and say oh you forgot something and then you get down on your knee and say will you

[20:20]marry me i think that's the problem is that they're sitting in their car when you propose to

[20:23]them they can easily at least the first couple gave me the ring back so i could repurpose it

[20:27]right the other thing that was really cool about this show is so they had an amazing lineup of

[20:31]music and it included um the finals concert that they that i don't know i don't know i don't know

[20:36]uh buddy holly performed with richie valens and the big bopper and the big bopper was in in the

[20:42]show richie valens was in the show maybe we could pull up la bomba like they played this and it

[20:47]rocked the whole the whole crowd was going nuts for it oh yes

[20:51]what's the percussion to this one i don't know that they only said one interesting thing about

[21:00]about about richie valens and it just made everyone sad so i'm not going to repeat it

[21:06]russell russell at the end was like hey i have some questions for the people that put on the play

[21:11]and they're like sir you've already asked 20 questions detailed about different percussion

[21:16]that was in the song we can't keep going like this well i will say when the big bopper came out

[21:21]i was definitely louder than most of the old folks in the building because it was

[21:25]big bopper time baby i was super into it like i was doing robs

[21:30]yes baby this is the big bopper baby you want me to what

[21:36]and he came out and he did the whole bit you guys would have loved it yes

[21:40]now you gotta admit right if you go to this last concert and you see buddy holly hit after hit

[21:48]richie valens bringing it with the guitar and then this

[21:51]i mean this is so far below those other songs how the big bopper got onto that flight is

[22:02]absolutely beyond me the big bopper was really good at this show but i will say rob i i have to

[22:07]i this is where i got really tripped up with the big bopper he came out and they've got a phone

[22:12]for him because it rings you know at the beginning of chantilly lace oh yeah and so i'm sitting there

[22:16]and i'm getting excited i'm sitting there with a theater goer next to me and i'm like

[22:20]let it ring twice because we always let it ring i'm audibly saying this out loud in the theater

[22:25]let it ring twice bopper baby you know what it only rang once and i immediately looked to look to the

[22:32]person next to me i say what the fuck it's supposed to ring twice rob maybe we could pull

[22:37]back the beginning i'm wondering if we're doing something wrong i wonder if there's one ring or

[22:41]two rings at the beginning of this big bopper our brains are broken okay here we go is this podcast

[22:49]beck did it better historically let's find out are we built on a lie hello

[22:56]oh no every time we've called the bopper before

[23:02]i've been told there needs to be two rings to talk to the bopper

[23:05]it turns out you sweet bag you only need to let it ring once but here's the thing that doesn't

[23:11]even sound like a phone to me that sounds like somebody i mean listen to this it sounds like

[23:14]somebody's going into a store right this sounds like you're going into a drug store

[23:18]you know what i mean like hey baby hey baby it's me it's a big bopper i'm in duane reed and i'm

[23:25]looking for peanut m&ms baby and some condoms but they're under glass baby so i gotta get some help

[23:32]i need some deodorant and some condoms don't even ask what's going on tonight i think

[23:36]oh now wait a minute hello is this the bopper this is interesting two rings no it's only one ring

[23:45]hey baby folks i gotta tell you big bopper wants to come in and give you a little message about

[23:50]why i use two rings i'll tell you what i gave one ring to my wife after six hours because i

[23:57]wanted to be the mayor of pound town so bad baby oh yeah

[24:01]and the other ring do you know what that other ring was for baby what was the other ring bopper

[24:07]shit i thought i'd have a joke ready by now and i probably

[24:12]around that airplane that went down in cedar falls

[24:16]clearly clearly yeah it's as i mentioned before this memorial where it's the big bopper and he's

[24:24]on the ground it's actually just a chalk outline but it's real big in the middle he's like this

[24:31]the show was really good besides me getting like overly excited about the big bopper baby and like

[24:43]audibly yelling it when he came out there but the show was really good but they did a very good job

[24:48]at the end of they kind of showed the final concert and then the lights went dark and they

[24:52]said and then they talked about the the plane crash for a minute and then they said the rest

[24:57]of this concert the rest of this show will be rock and roll and they just came back and they're like

[25:01]and played like three amazing rock songs it was a great way to end the show but they did a fantastic

[25:07]job the history theater in saint paul i'd highly recommend it this is good rock and roll music

[25:14]this is so good right there well actually i believe they ended with a chuck berry song rob oh

[25:19]oh my god hey it might it might surprise you guys but jerry lee lewis died uh this week and

[25:25]it was on twitter it might surprise you i was deep into the twitter uh replies saying nasty things

[25:31]about jerry lee lewis reminding everybody what a piece of shit that guy was so that

[25:34]might surprise you yeah i didn't know he was still alive that was a new yeah i was i was back to my

[25:39]old uh back to my old games again russell that's unbelievable that you went to a show starring the

[25:44]big bopper it makes me laugh so hard just thinking about this the final song that they ended after

[25:50]they they went through the plane crash which part of me i couldn't think but of anything but rob

[25:55]when they talked about the plane crash but they did end with the last two songs were rave on and

[26:01]the final song was johnny be good is what they ended the show with fantastic oh my god crazy

[26:07]feeling i still every time i open up our google drive and i see the chuck berry mediocre 28 i

[26:12]laugh out loud every time i see that that's how it's labeled it's so good matt rolling going how's

[26:17]it going with you uh good uh just one thing wikipedia says that his wife is still alive

[26:24]she's 89 years old wow going in san juan puerto rico how about that buddy holly's wife carry over

[26:31]jokes but is she local oh no no not local she lives in puerto rico not local you should write

[26:39]a book about her man that'd be fascinating yeah yeah interesting well what does she like to fuck

[26:45]buddy holly i don't know that's not the part i was thinking i think maybe you could change it to

[26:50]what was it like to get engaged to buddy holly in five hours i think it would sound something like

[27:00]i might have to go back to the the bad day with all the real old people in a couple days so i can

[27:16]i wish i wish our listeners could see rob's face when he does these things

[27:21]like you've never seen a happier person in your life never seen anyone more self-satisfied than

[27:30]when he

[27:30]comes up with something like this what's that percussion i hear in the back

[27:34]sorry he says at the end that's so that is so real sorry

[27:44]i'm sorry baby

[27:48]i uh i went to a neighborhood

[27:53]halloween party today nice i did too yeah me too yeah it was a great one neighbors across the street

[28:00]chad becky had an awesome halloween party uh costumes everybody was supposed to wear costumes

[28:09]everybody had the opportunity to wear costumes did you dress up like a referee what was your costume

[28:15]i went as a 41 year old father of two living in southwest minneapolis

[28:22]you knew it was coming but i had to do it yeah i i try not to be negative because i don't want to be

[28:30]negative for the kids i don't want to be negative for the kids i don't want to be negative for the

[28:30]kids right but like god damn it am i gonna dress up for halloween and like actually spend any more

[28:38]than one second of my life to think of a costume and then have to go like no no you're not gonna

[28:45]do it i'm just not gonna do it i don't want to do it i'm not gonna do it i'm too old to be

[28:50]worrying about what my costume is so oh can i just recommend one thing man i want to show you

[28:54]the costume i've had for the last five years and it's it's just fantastic look at this

[29:00]rob got up and walked away you thought i was going to come back into frame with no clothes on i know

[29:05]that's what you guys thought was going to happen because i thought about it but let me just put

[29:10]this on real quick i'm going to show you guys i wore this today when i was announcing the power

[29:13]lifting meet i think it's a perfect thing man it's light it fits right over you can take it on

[29:18]and off and everybody knows what this costume is check this out it's putting on something that

[29:25]looks kind of like a once again another visual joke slice of pizza he's a big

[29:30]slice of pizza it looks like a slice of pizza it's like a it's like a piece of pizza that with

[29:35]the head sticking out of the end of it it's a slice of pizza and when i wore it today everybody

[29:40]said to me and these are total strangers hey great costume to which i replied it's pizza

[29:45]which puts me in a very awkward spot because they instantly think i'm a moron and they go

[29:52]yeah i know this is actually the only amazon review i've ever left

[29:57]is on this costume and i just wrote it's pizza

[29:59]i noticed it was a triangle cut not a party cut as aaron calls it not the square cut it's a triangle

[30:07]you gotta have you gotta have the crust a square pizza costume would make zero sense nobody would

[30:12]get it at all i gotta take this off it's too hot matt you're right was everyone else wearing

[30:17]costumes or old there was two other dads there was probably i don't know let's say somewhere

[30:24]between 25 and 30 parents there and there was two other dads so there's three of us that did not

[30:29]yeah then there's i mean you know probably just as many there's a ton of kids were there some

[30:33]local moms there too maybe there was a few local moms there's a few local moms drive my truck by

[30:38]and so the i wasn't alone but i kind of gave you know the old beer nod to the guy who didn't have a

[30:47]uh who didn't have a costume on either said hey how you doing you know he's the only one i said

[30:52]two of them together yeah so that was it but i i don't know i mean russell are you a

[30:59]dress up at halloween guy i know we've talked about this in the past but are you still a dress

[31:04]up at halloween no i'm i'm really not a dress up at halloween but if i knew i was going to a party

[31:09]where people were dressing up i would probably try to do i would either do it or i would find

[31:13]a way not to go so i i wouldn't i probably couldn't be i wouldn't go otherwise i would

[31:17]probably figure out something but now the hosts had a great i mean they're they're always they've

[31:22]got the four kids and you know kids go over there a lot play with their kids so they they were uh

[31:28]john lennon and yoko ono

[31:29]and so they were in there they were in like white pajamas and it was a pretty darn good

[31:35]that was a pretty darn good costume so speaking of halloween costumes when i was out in saint paul

[31:40]for the the the buddy holly show the big papa baby i there were people out and this was more

[31:47]than a week before halloween so the weekend so we're at a weekend right before halloween they

[31:51]were out like nine days before halloween people wearing costumes i thought that was the stupidest

[31:56]thing i've ever seen yep like how can you you're how

[31:59]why are you celebrating halloween more than a week before i get the weekend before two weekends

[32:04]before bullshit how about this one for you so people i work with we're heading back to their

[32:10]college over in milwaukee and hang out with some friends and stuff like that and go hang out

[32:15]milwaukee go down to apparently it's a big it's a big uh halloween party over there maybe it's

[32:20]madison one of those two but i know madison is a huge one yeah they brought they were all going to

[32:25]be cows on friday but then they brought a second costume

[32:29]because they didn't want to have the same costume for friday so for saturday so now they're all

[32:32]then they're all crayons on saturday like now that seems ridiculous you know like a box of crayons

[32:38]guys you guys are no fun you just need to have a box of costumes that you wear i mean you just

[32:44]break out the same costumes every year get some good costumes let it ride you've got like an 800

[32:49]foot square apartment in new york and part of that goes to like a closet full of costumes

[32:54]the costume bin is the same size as all of our christmas decorations that's

[32:59]how big our costume bin is it's huge it's got the horse head in it because you hate so you hate

[33:03]christmas that's what you're saying you dedicate just as much space to halloween costumes i think

[33:08]halloween is a superior holiday to christmas yes i do think that i 100 think that and i'm telling

[33:14]you what my kids are at the age now where my wife and i are in this glorious time

[33:17]we can do dirty costumes and everyone thinks it's funny last year we went to a party over

[33:24]at somebody's house where my wife was dressed as an outlet and i was dressed

[33:28]as a plug guys it's so perfect until there's young kids at the party and they keep grabbing

[33:34]your plug parts and it makes you feel extraordinarily uncomfortable although

[33:38]today i will say i was riding the subway and everyone in new york city was out in their

[33:41]costumes going to various parties whoa it was a great time to ride the subway i'll just put it

[33:47]that way it was unbelievable i was that creepy guy on the subway looking around

[33:52]it was awesome and my wife came out to me and said hey i should start wearing costumes like

[33:58]this and she showed like a super sexy costume and i was like yes you should have been doing this the

[34:04]whole time i have been saying this for years you are racked and stacked you need to be wearing

[34:09]degrading sexy costumes now please instead of me as a plug i want to see you looking hot let's do it

[34:17]what do you guys think is are your wives i'm really enjoying mad costumes aaron do you want

[34:22]your wife wearing a degrading costume yes or no why do you gotta throw the degrading word in there

[34:28]once again i'm really enjoying mad swirling going yeah i love sexy costumes on my wife

[34:32]they'd be great you wanted to grade your wife sick did you ever do that your costume for the

[34:35]fundraiser or not no that's next weekend so i still have to figure that out we're leaning

[34:39]yes yes yeah it's it's after halloween oh that's might be even worse than me

[34:46]i've got two ideas for you a pilgrim or a priest go as a priest just trust my priest go

[34:58]for it i know i never i couldn't help myself from making terrible it's so good as a priest

[35:05]matt did they have any bobbing for apples or candy corn or what else did they have at the

[35:09]party other than costumes for some no i mean it was kind of a potluck everybody brought something

[35:13]so it was it was nice there was i don't know if we had any they didn't have any games like that

[35:18]so it was just a straight up kids running around playing on their trampoline and hide and seek and

[35:24]all that good stuff so it was a good time it's good to hang out with the neighbors every once in a while

[35:28]i'm not a parent so uh a party with like 30 adults there's got to be like 30 40 kids like

[35:35]how many kids are at this this seems like overwhelming there's no way i could deal with

[35:39]that no there was 20 parents i was trying to rethink that and somewhere between 30 and 35

[35:45]hey i would love to sign up to go hang out in two kindergarten classes this would be a great old time

[35:52]hey look at look at that man over there he's dressed as somebody who's eating a whole bottle

[35:56]of pills at one time

[35:58]rosie rolling going how's it going with you man it's going good he's russell's like i'd love to

[36:05]come to the party i'm on the way to the gym again goodbye and if you don't know what i'm talking

[36:09]about go fuck yourself quick addendum to matt's rolling going i also went to i went to a halloween

[36:14]party party this evening and then earlier today we went on the the halloween parade on piedmont

[36:20]avenue and i did see a costume that i thought matt would enjoy which was a wearable stay puffed

[36:28]man costume that is itself inflatable so i thought man if you ever do that's pretty good if you're

[36:32]ever going to wear a costume like wearing an inflatable seems like that would be that would

[36:36]be the right thing for you the other one my wife saw uh so sarah saw maybe leo saw it when he was

[36:43]looking for his present it was just a yellow shirt that says pretend i'm a banana and i thought that

[36:48]would be a pretty good one that's good i like that's me a good one guys i've got an inflatable

[36:53]ostrich costume in the bin right now you guys can come over

[36:57]matt's in the inflatable ostrich costume russ is the pizza i could dress up like a plug

[37:03]rosie's uh this would be perfect wait i don't know if we've ever talked to i know we talked

[37:09]about this guy once because i think we talked about him in the michael jackson episode it was

[37:13]ray parker roy park excuse me ray parker was my dad i'm ray parker jr ray parker jr actually if

[37:22]anyone's ever looking for a great karaoke song write this down the ghostbuster song at karaoke

[37:27]is a fantastic karaoke hit it's so easy and people love singing with it so we're bringing it back

[37:34]it's it didn't make rob's halloween slash scary list but the ghostbuster song is a killer killer

[37:41]killer i saw a lot of ghostbusters costumes today but really how it's really going with me is uh we

[37:46]went to kansas city for a wedding last weekend uh so a couple things about the wedding um beautiful

[37:52]time it was it was one of our listeners who got married they are now in italy on their honeymoon

[37:57]props to them for having a beautiful night they served steak and chicken at their wedding you

[38:02]didn't have to choose they just put them both on your plate wow nice right turf yes and then on the

[38:09]way home in the den we had to fly through denver because we drove to iowa and then flew from des

[38:14]moines i think i had the best meal of my life in the denver airport i'm like we oh boy we sat down

[38:21]we ended up at the coors silver bullet bar of course wallace like miraculously

[38:27]focused on his chicken strips and ate them i ate a spicy chicken sandwich that was really pretty

[38:34]good uninterrupted and i had a veggie burger i had time for a coors banquet on draft plus a little

[38:42]bit of whiskey banquet everyone enjoyed it it might have been the best meal of my life like

[38:46]in in the denver airport i'm just i was shocked experience than it is the food i mean the sandwich

[38:52]was legitimately good like this was a good sando but yes it was it was the experience that really

[38:57]did it for me so yeah that was that was it uh and if we got time i gotta ask you guys i got i need

[39:01]some advice so i think this i think this episode is probably coming out the week of thanksgiving

[39:07]we realized this week we are hosting two families on thanksgiving so we're gonna be here in oakland

[39:12]we have some other oakland friends who are not we're hosting two families like you guys what

[39:17]does this is my super bowl like we're hosting a thanksgiving dinner right this is my super bowl

[39:22]yep so first of all i gotta start wine shopping right the fuck now like i gotta get

[39:27]the right wine i'm not worried about the menu we're gonna do potluck kind of style

[39:31]sausage and the stuffing yeah yeah all of that what do i do for a playlist what have we done i

[39:36]know i know we've done some thanksgiving joke lists but what do i play for a thanksgiving meal

[39:42]though like what do i like what music do i put on i need to put on a good like this is my home

[39:47]i'm hosting a thanksgiving i gotta come with it with the playlist what what needs to be on there

[39:52]i swear to god we did this exact bit last year where we made it this isn't a bit this is real

[39:56]life this is real life advice i need nora jones oh i like that there we go a little uh neil young

[40:05]yeah um maybe come back with a little steve winwood americana it has to be people aaron

[40:12]like a little brandy carlisle in there oh there you go brandy carlisle

[40:15]anything uncertain if people have not heard of those that are in your mind right now where

[40:22]you're like i don't know if people like if russ hasn't heard of it it's it needs to be out like

[40:26]you can't drop uh what was the dog song from my dog slobber bone like that i'm starting on the

[40:33]list i'm putting slobber bone front and center right when dinner's on the table it's gonna be

[40:37]slobber bone just for you guys i think so are you gonna play records aaron or what are you gonna do

[40:41]are you gonna hook up a speaker what are you gonna do no i'll make a playlist or just play the jazz

[40:46]radio station if i don't have time no i'm not gonna play records that's too like i can't be

[40:50]like getting up plus like if your hands have you know gravy on them you can't like you gotta wash

[40:56]it's not the right time for playing records so aaron are the people that are coming so

[41:00]initially i confused you said two families and i was like you're bringing your family and your

[41:04]wife's family you're saying these are like two friends do they know each other or yes or not

[41:10]yeah not very well but they do know each other but no it's one of those like oh

[41:13]you know everyone's families live outside of oakland we happen to be here let's all

[41:18]get together to a friend's a friend's thanksgiving thing admittedly aaron i think you

[41:22]you can pull it off because you guys are social enough you've got it in you but for me like

[41:26]the idea of going to someone's house on thanksgiving and then like being with people that i don't know

[41:31]very well it sounds horrible i could never do it unbelievable yeah can't believe you'd say that

[41:36]russell that's crazy would you like doing that rob no i mean how how nice would one thanksgiving be

[41:44]without anything just to watch three games of football like we're in vegas or something like

[41:50]that i don't know we've done i've done two or three thanksgivings for so long that just you know just

[41:56]one just take a vacation somewhere i don't know that'd be oh it'd be super nice i mean we do a

[42:01]big meal but i love making the stuffing i love making the gravy but we have kind of cut it down

[42:05]to just what we like nobody in the family eats dark meat we just cook a turkey breast we don't

[42:10]do a whole turkey you know we invite one or two people over to have thanksgiving with us that's it

[42:16]we don't need to have a big thing and we can't because we don't have enough space but you just

[42:19]do what you want now i mean we're the opposite now because we we typically have done it just the three

[42:26]two of us before so this is uh and sometimes a friend will invite us over sometimes not so

[42:30]i think you could replace that wine couldn't you replace it with like a whiskey couldn't you get a

[42:34]whiskey bitters buffet bar setup and have people make their own drinks that way i think that's the

[42:39]way to go i think you need to have a couple of games on deck aaron in case things slow down but

[42:45]you need i think but because you know what's going to happen is that the parents and the kids

[42:49]eventually the conversation is going to run out you got to have something to do well the kids are

[42:52]going to go nuts i mean the kids are going to go nuts so we'll we'll

[42:55]we'll we'll figure it out but i i really needed some advice on the music so i appreciate you guys

[43:00]so what kind of wine are you going to get i mean light light reds high acid i mean we'll do some

[43:05]for sure and maybe some gamay and then uh something sparkling probably that that's the

[43:11]other question is like it's it's nice to get a magnum for an event like this but then everybody's

[43:14]doing the same thing no so if you want to like you know if you want to like have some

[43:19]variety you can't do a mag you can't say high acid and magnum in the same sentence here on the

[43:25]and not think we're going to say something okay it's fun to pour wine out of a magnum it feels

[43:31]like a party but it's only six adults it's not like you know and they all got to drive home so

[43:35]it's not like we can really get rowdy anyway how's it how's it rolling on with rob this week

[43:39]i've got a mystery guys and i know you can't solve it but i gotta tell you what's going on

[43:44]russell's gonna hate this story so i i leave work on friday i am walking out with a co-worker i was

[43:51]sitting at my desk facing forward i had i i hadn't done anything put on my jacket right it's a zip up

[44:01]jacket it's pretty cool i'm walking out i'm walking through the streets of manhattan with

[44:06]this person that i work with and i kind of open my jacket because i'm getting hot and i feel like

[44:13]it just feels weird like there's something wrong right so i'm talking to this person i'm talking

[44:21]to this person and i look down and on my shirt on my chest on the right side is a giant glob of

[44:29]something brown oh no and i would say it's about the size of my hand and it's just on this shirt

[44:36]oh what and i'm like what the fuck what is this it can't be what i think it is it just can't

[44:45]so i immediately fumble with the zipper i zip my jacket back up because i don't know what

[44:51]to do this is somebody i work with every day they cannot see the mystery brown glob but now she's

[44:58]talking to me and all i'm thinking is how long has this glob been on this shirt have i been

[45:04]teaching all day with a giant brown glob on my shirt and i think myself there's no way because

[45:10]there's one thing middle schoolers will do is point out if you have a giant brown glob on your

[45:15]shirt they would bring that up immediately but i'm thinking where would i have gotten a giant brown

[45:21]was i eating something was there was a caramel was there some sort of brown ice cream milk duds

[45:26]did you spill some milk duds on your i'm telling you we part ways at the subway station

[45:32]i take a risk then you gotta you gotta you gotta kind of put your finger in it or i open up my

[45:39]jacket and i look and i put my hand in it it was poo i don't know where it came from i'll just say

[45:51]i went home i did a full investigation a full dog right down oh what what dog i'm at work there's no

[46:00]dog at work well but didn't you have a dog that could have crafted like a sweatshirt before you

[46:05]took off in the morning you think it was in my jack but that's the thing there was none on the

[46:10]jacket i thought it got transferred from the jacket it wasn't i don't know where this came

[46:17]from okay i'm just i i listen i know

[46:21]what you're thinking i hadn't used the bathroom for hours i honestly think this is poo that

[46:29]dropped on me from out of the sky i can't imagine where else this came from where it hit me

[46:35]do you guys have any i didn't feel i just sensed something was wrong it was like the sixth sense

[46:41]but it's for having poo on your shirt did you poop during the day is there any way that you

[46:45]somehow i'm sure i did poop onto yourself while you're pooping i'm just gonna say this way i'm

[46:49]sure i did

[46:50]but if you would take some evidence from that incident and put it on the shirt it's not the

[46:55]same i'm just gonna say that right now you you've got you've got 42 years of experience there and

[47:00]it's never ended up up there it's so bizarre but there's no doubt that that's what it was

[47:06]it was poo i swear i think not on the sweatshirt only on the only on the the inner shirt on the

[47:13]shirt and i didn't notice until i unzipped i don't know i mean because i was in the office

[47:18]talking to co-workers like walking around

[47:20]i don't know where the poo came from and i don't have anybody else in my life that i can say this

[47:25]story to so do you have students in the room no i never not the whole day there's no students in

[47:32]the room no but they would have said something because it was just on my shirt no no no no no

[47:36]is there any way like some student would have kind of played a trick on you or something

[47:40]no no no no no what no they love me they think i'm great

[47:45]they call me mr mr smells like poo as a cute nickname they give me that answer sounds

[47:50]like the guy of someone who would have had like poo thrown at him by a student

[47:53]no because they would never so if it were me i would throw the shirt away did you throw in the

[47:58]wash or did you just throw it away like if you're me i'll just throw the shirt away this is a nice

[48:02]shirt this is from harddaddy.com it's one of my nicer shirts that i have i did i took it out i

[48:08]wash it who cares guys did you did you tell your family or is this like you haven't told anyone no

[48:15]i haven't i'm never gonna tell anybody else ever nobody in my family this is a podcast so i'm set

[48:19]nobody's gonna

[48:20]hear this what i mean what are the other realistic options like it's not a bird right is it like

[48:25]maybe someone like a unhoused person on the street of new york that might have just thrown

[48:29]something on you but it could hit me and i wouldn't notice i and it was under my jacket

[48:35]i took off my jacket and was there that's the thing this is like it's interdimensional i don't

[48:42]get where it came from i i haven't been able to think about anything else all weekend

[48:50]is this what we stayed up till 121 in the central let's get into the album i don't know there's no

[48:55]answer i honestly might go into the priesthood after this like this might push me into there i

[49:02]think this is like a sign i mean i could have done my king segment again if you guys really

[49:10]wanted me to but i i thought this is a good story i don't know i'd much prefer we go back

[49:14]to the video breakdown no that's for when we don't get voicemails next week oh and i've got i've got

[49:20]two of those set up don't worry listen we are talking about hotel california by the eagles is

[49:27]it the eagles but that's the eagles just eagles on the streaming services it just says eagles right

[49:32]yeah okay so let's stick to that let's stick to that convention for the podcast it's gonna be

[49:36]tough we're talking about to do take two we are talking about the hotel california by eagles

[49:43]that sounds good i like that uh so this album coming out in

[49:50]1976 this is actually the eagles this is actually eagles fifth album fifth album but it's their first

[50:00]one with their new guitarist joe walsh and it's the last one with their bass player randy met

[50:05]messner who was the mesner right what'd you say aaron matt does anyone know

[50:13]trying to help rob with the raymond usher moment here i'm not sure i don't know anything about

[50:19]say it's a raymond usher moment that makes me sound dumb like a guy who gets poop on his shirt

[50:24]and he doesn't even know where it came from uh but i'm seriously if that happened to you on your

[50:28]shirt wouldn't you be disturbed by it like wouldn't you be thinking about it well let's not

[50:33]go that far it's a really nice shirt and it actually was hard the order took a long time

[50:37]this is the last with randy messner the bass player who is the high voice pronouncing this

[50:42]right we're gonna get smoked for not i think it's this i would go with meisner okay i think it's

[50:49]what cares it's it's we're talking about eagles nobody cares uh this is the high voice bass

[50:55]player who ironically played the bass down here but his voice was up here he was yeah he's saying

[51:01]take it to the limit um this album when it came out was an instant critical success everybody

[51:08]thought it was absolutely fantastic in fact it was nominated for album of the year but it lost

[51:13]to another album on our list rumors by fleetwood mac whoa it's a pretty good year wow part of it

[51:19]is that coming out in 1976 the theme of this album was kind of america capitalism in general

[51:26]and more specifically what it was like to live in california at that time so eagles band members are

[51:32]living out in california living the fast life and this whole song this whole album is about excess

[51:38]of eagles god this is so hard um originally i just want to blow your mind with this real quick

[51:45]originally this album was 37th

[51:49]on the rolling stones first list 37 as the best album of all time who was correct the first time

[51:58]or the second time or not at all you be the judge as we listen to eagles hotel california looks like

[52:04]you can still say the eagles it's just not capitalized it's you know we're listening to

[52:08]the eagles but i'm not an english major so i don't know but it's not oh but the band is not

[52:13]the eagles yeah it's just eagles okay so we're listening to the eagles

[52:19]and aaron we've got something i know you like this is one of the biggest songs of all time

[52:26]and i would say this it's a big titular track hotel california you've heard

[52:31]we actually talked about the titular track once before it was on the elton john episode

[52:39]yellow brick road we talked about the best track just a couple weeks ago really we did the best i

[52:48]can only imagine the jokes you're going to say about the best titular track you've ever heard

[52:49]jokes we made so long ago about the best titular tracks funny there weren't any jokes in that

[52:54]episode i don't know if that's a snare or a tom or what but that little pulse like that's that's

[52:59]the best sound on the album to me like when you hear that like that double tap on the drums you're

[53:03]like cool let's go can we just get this out of the way we need to just get this out of the way

[53:07]right now aaron has ripped the eagles before i think it's a perfectly enjoyable album i'm not

[53:11]saying i love it but aaron you've ripped it before what's your problem with the eagles

[53:15]you know i thought about that a lot this week um

[53:18]when i listened to the album one time which is that um i just they're so everywhere so ubiquitous

[53:26]and the music is just okay it's fine like i actually put this album on i was like oh this

[53:31]is nice it's fine but that's it it's just fine but it does feel to me i'll be interested in matt's

[53:37]thoughts if he's able to stay awake it feels to me like one of matt's criticisms about music where

[53:43]this was just clearly like let's just put everything that's going on on the radio right now

[53:48]trying to sell a lot of records or is this the album that caused the radio to sound like this

[53:53]well i don't know that's a good question that's a very good question and then who decides who decides

[53:58]it's like what came first the chicken or the egg or the t-shirt or the shit stain on the t-shirt

[54:03]listen the bottom line is nobody's ever going to hear this episode because i think the

[54:08]eagles are one of the most hateable bands in the u.s right like why i don't understand why

[54:14]when i told people popular i don't get why listen when i told people we were doing two

[54:18]albums kanye west and the eagles they both got equal responses but for very different reasons

[54:24]like people do not like the eagles and in fact the one person i talked to did like the eagles

[54:29]they're like oh i like the eagles and i said really you like the whole album hotel california

[54:33]they're like no i just like the one song i was like yeah i don't it's i don't know i just i it

[54:38]isn't it corny to you russell i don't know maybe it's just everybody hating the eagles and i you

[54:42]know man always does a great job of like putting things in perspective it is corny like it feels

[54:48]very corny compared to the the kanye album we just listened to but like if you were to go back

[54:53]and put this in like what is it 77 or what's the year 76 yeah i don't know i like i don't know what

[55:01]my ranking is going to be on it yet but i i think i think i think people just take shots at it

[55:05]because it's like the the big dog that's easy to take shots at because they've sold so many albums

[55:10]i don't i don't get the hate i didn't hate listening to it but i will never listen to it

[55:14]again it just it doesn't you know it's like it was on it was

[55:18]fine i kind of enjoyed some moments but hotel california is a it's a banger it's a it's a you

[55:24]know all the words you know all the guitar solos i don't know if we're going to say the same thing

[55:29]when we get down to wasted time reprise you know what i mean like the the back half of this album

[55:34]is i think it's i don't i mean i don't really dig on don henley's voice like i can do without it

[55:41]very tight band though you love his percussion he's playing the drums and singing back there

[55:46]i was gonna ask you guys do you

[55:48]guys generally dance to remember or do you dance to is it regret or forget i think forget i dance

[55:55]to remember all the time dance dance dance it's honestly some of the most fun times i've had like

[56:01]with my family it's just a dancing at a wedding i love it next up we have a new kid in town

[56:06]this sounds like steely dan but not as good as steely dan yes that's a good call i like that

[56:16]i like the comparison

[56:17]interesting and you know what else is interesting russell it's interesting you would say that

[56:22]because what's interesting is that this won a grammy but it's a grammy that doesn't exist anymore

[56:29]what for this won a grammy for best arrangement for voices and i was surprised when i read that

[56:36]i i kind of went down this might surprise you but i went down a little bit of a rabbit hole

[56:41]and that's why best vocal arrangements is this week's list oh yeah all right i'm into this i'm

[56:47]vocal arrangements and this is going to get complicated so i gotta pull up a web page

[56:52]to keep track of this there's no chance we'll get lost trying to follow this

[56:56]best vocal arrangement later called best vocal arrangement for two or more voices was an award

[57:01]grammy that started a grammy award that started in nine in 1977 okay and it ended in 1986 we've

[57:11]got multiple yawners no no don't say that we've got nine years of this award and the winners of

[57:17]the award are absolutely crazy now first off in 1977 okay the song that you should think of every

[57:25]time when i say best vocal arrangement with the starland vocal band afternoon delight

[57:31]one of the best songs about deep dick in the afternoon i think

[57:44]rockets in flight that's actually

[57:47]that's a wild arrangement i can't figure out what the melody is there

[57:50]i can see aaron playing this song on his record player while he's packing up his metal box for a

[57:57]hike out in the woods oh yeah i'm trying to figure out how i would sing along with it it's pretty

[58:00]complex how you would sing along with this haven't you what haven't you seen uh yes

[58:07]yes

[58:08]now what's crazy is that one of the bands one of the songs that beat

[58:17]in 1977 for that grammy award let's see if you guys know this song this was nominated but did not win

[58:23]whoa wow how could you not how does that you're right can you imagine that you're queen and you're

[58:33]like wow i can't wait to win a grammy and it's like nope starland vocal band you're like especially

[58:37]for such a weird award it's like well we couldn't win for anything else but maybe vocal arranging we

[58:43]might get it right it's like this is their entire like instead

[58:47]of being lost to eagles they're like the bird no the band now you like i mean the eagles are like no

[58:55]eagles i want to put something into your tickler file i want you to store this away for a little

[58:59]bit later one of the other bands beat in 1977 was a band called singers unlimited singers unlimited

[59:06]now keep that in mind we're going to get back to that in 1979 so the eagles so starland vocal band

[59:11]wins in 77 eagles win for new kid in town in 78 when their album came out in 76 don't know how

[59:17]that works doesn't matter in 1979 the band that won best vocal arrangement for two or more voices

[59:25]see if you can recognize this one i remember right matt matt didn't like this one if i remember when

[59:34]we listened to it on that original run through the list right nope but what do you think of that

[59:40]vocal arrangement you know to be fair there was a documentary out on

[59:46]i think hbo about the bgs about the gibb brothers changes a lot of things when you kind of get their

[59:53]backstory yeah just plucking that out you know there's also one about the eagles that's again

[59:58]pretty darn good talking about when joe walsh comes in and everything and how they've changed

[60:02]everything so i don't know it's it's almost like it's almost like it should be a rule in life that

[60:08]you know maybe just reserve your opinions so you have the full story sometimes i don't know that's

[60:12]the dumbest thing i've ever heard in my life all right moving on and here's

[60:16]what's crazy about that right that's from saturday night fever soundtrack which is the one two three

[60:21]four five six seven eight that is the ninth best-selling album of all time do you know what

[60:27]the fifth and sixth best-selling albums of all time are the eagles greatest hits and hotel california

[60:34]the album we're doing right now is the sixth highest album of all time but we don't care about

[60:38]that because what we care about is the grammy award for best vocals now one of the band that

[60:44]the bgs beat in 1979

[60:46]and i want you just to put this in your tickler file a little bit is a band called singers

[60:50]unlimited singers unlimited got beat once again in 1979 if you say tickler file again i'm gonna

[60:56]have to turn my camera off by the bgs they were beat by the bgs now all of a sudden we hit what

[61:05]is basically the michael jordan of vocal arrangements for two or more voices let's hear

[61:09]it the most dominant band in the history of the grammy awards for best vocal arrangement for

[61:16]two or more voices get ready for manhattan transfer winning in 1981 for the song birdland

[61:25]literally a song in my life jazz club what the hell is this i hope you like the manhattan

[61:35]transfer because we're going to listen to about four more of their songs

[61:38]why did they get rid of the award like this is who we're like

[61:46]this group needs an award no

[61:48]the reason this award doesn't exist anymore is manhattan transfer they dominated they literally

[61:57]were like shack playing against preschool kids so just wait they're like the joey chestnut remember

[62:02]that guy who was in the roots who won all the hot dog meeting contests like they should just shut

[62:06]that shit down he's won so many in a row manhattan transfer is a four-person jazz vocal group every

[62:12]song sounds just like that and guys i just want you to put this in a

[62:16]tickler file for me guess what band manhattan transfer beat in 1981 well is it singers unlimited

[62:22]singers unlimited see if you can guess first person to guess this song wins don't look at my

[62:28]screen

[62:28]i looked it up it's not herbie man i did look it up it definitely sounds like a multi-instrumentalist

[62:45]this is singers unlimited

[62:47]speaking of getting dumped on our own boat routers coming up to sweet georgia brown

[63:05]and here's what's crazy the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[63:13]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[63:15]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[63:15]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[63:15]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[63:15]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[63:45]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[64:15]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them they beat them for sweet georgia brown

[64:45]you know who else the manhattan transfer beat them for sweet georgia brown

[65:15]now you might say to yourself how could manhattan transfer beat a band

[65:19]as good as manhattan transfer twice and the answer is they had a secret weapon

[65:23]when you think about vocal arrangement for two or more voices there's got to be only two people

[65:29]you think of the sound effects guy from police academy and this guy right here listen winslow

[65:35]see if you can pick out who this is

[65:37]bobby mcfarran bobby mcfarran coming in with manhattan transfer

[65:45]into the another night in tunisia

[65:47]manhattan transfer in the nine years that this category existed

[65:54]was nominated 10 times and they won it three

[65:58]and they go out on top with an absolute banger another night in tunisia with bobby mcfarran

[66:05]i mean i kind of like this one i'm down with this one

[66:10]see here and i told you the eagles were awesome

[66:15]and folks that was another top five list and i don't have at least i don't have the sound clip

[66:29]to play out so what am i going to play instead a nine gale sang in burglary square oh i know what

[66:37]i'll play

[66:37]i've got a notion of the ocean but it's what it sounds like with the homeless guy

[66:45]gives rob the manhattan transfer when he's walking down the street

[66:48]birdland all right let's get back to the eagles two eagles uh life in the fast lane

[66:59]a classic radio staple so this is joe this is joe walsh on guitar then right

[67:07]yep joe walsh on guitar glenn fry has a bowl guitar sound right like that's like

[67:15]but like rob could you learn this in like 13 minutes yes or is this pretty hard to play

[67:22]this guitar i don't know i think joe walsh is a pretty talented

[67:29]right guitar player yeah but i hear this and it doesn't sound very complicated so that's why i'm

[67:34]asking yeah i don't know but but you know sometimes the really good musicians that's how they make it

[67:38]sound it's it's certainly not like super i don't know there's nothing extra about it there's just a

[67:44]lot of it do you think do you think part of the reason that i don't care for the eagles is that i

[67:48]saw so much of them when they did that acoustic like i saw that video of hotel california acoustic

[67:53]a million times and it drove me i think it's like it's like kiss to me like they just there's so

[67:57]much crap out there and they're so advertised and pushed with all this stuff that it's just

[68:05]like eventually you're like just stop stop i don't care stop and i think when they traded away jay

[68:11]that was the last straw for me and that was a

[68:14]joke i forgot to say earlier all right wasted time

[68:17]or when they fired andy reed from the band that was sad too

[68:24]you know but he had 13 years yeah what do you guys think is the right time to listen to this

[68:30]album like when when would you turn the aaron said he'll never listen to it again but if you

[68:34]were gonna when would you turn it on when would you listen to it i think maybe right after i eat

[68:39]a whole bottle of pills

[68:40]for me it's only when we're done with it

[68:44]making breakfast like it's like i can have it on while i'm making breakfast

[68:47]and then if there's that like you're gonna really waste your breakfast

[68:51]experience with this album because there's so many other albums

[68:54]actually this this album is in the original booze and vinyl here we got booze and vinyl too but it

[69:03]was in booze and vinyl one wow and they say before you drop the needle you should let your hair go

[69:08]go be cheap get out some blankets hang a few lanterns in the trees then break out the summer

[69:13]drinks and sit around and have a good time and then you're gonna have a good time and you're gonna

[69:14]be on the fire so it's like a beach type thing a fire type thing that's the feel that they're

[69:18]looking that's good i love it okay i get it i get it russell i know you're not drinking but what

[69:23]would we drink if we were going to listen to the two eagles well on side a they recommend a beach

[69:28]bomber cocktail and tonight i am actually drinking a beach bomber cocktail that's a big glass bomber

[69:34]before that's a big glass never had we ever had a beach bomber no by the way when did you get this

[69:40]we've been sitting here for four hours when did you make this drink

[69:44]shaker when you were doing your intro i didn't really care to hear about the eagles so i got my

[69:48]shaker you can see i got my shaker rob i got a professional shaker wow look at that so so this

[69:55]is a a classic tiki drink it's something like a maraschino flavored daiquiri and so what is in a

[70:01]beach bomber it is two ounces of white rum three quarters ounce quantro three quarters ounce fresh

[70:09]lime juice oh he's got that and half teaspoon of maraschino

[70:14]liqueur nope so that's the whole drink

[70:19]but there is one thing i am missing tonight so can you guess what i was missing tonight

[70:26]no i think he's got the maraschino liqueur i think he bought maraschino liqueur

[70:31]i think it's the quantro i actually had the quantro what i was missing tonight is the

[70:36]maraschino liqueur we've talked about it before that typically i just pour a little bit of cherry

[70:41]juice in and set to substitute yeah but i don't think it's the quantro i don't think it's the

[70:44]problem is when you do that all the time on all those drinks that call for maraschino liqueur

[70:48]you run out of cherries so i'm sitting here tonight i'm like what the fuck am i gonna do

[70:52]do i go to the grocery store and just buy like one thing of cherries that's kind of a creepy

[70:56]weird thing to do like just go through the line with one thing of cherries right yeah

[71:00]looks like a little but you know what i realized i had if you guys remember a while back we started

[71:05]drinking hard mountain dew and so i had a hard mountain dew black cherry so i just put a little

[71:12]bit of a drop of hard mountain dew and i just put a little bit of a drop of hard mountain dew and i

[71:13]put a little bit of a drop of hard mountain dew and i just put a little bit of a drop of hard mountain dew

[71:13]black cherry into my beach bomber cocktail to give it that maraschino flavor and it is delightful

[71:20]what do you think about that that's amazing hey what do you think of those cherries what do you

[71:25]think of them cheers i mean if i were pac-man i would eat those cherries right now do you think

[71:31]they use real cherry juice in that hard mountain dew you think those are real like oh yeah 100

[71:36]organic russell an unbelievable drink how's the drink russell's it tastes good it's actually very

[71:43]good keys

[71:43]i don't think it's supposed to be that size of glass but that it does look pretty good i gotta

[71:53]say it actually says you're supposed to blend it but i don't have on a blender so i didn't blend it

[71:58]i just shook it in ice and poured it on ice russell i can only imagine what you know what

[72:03]it's probably a manhattan for when you listen to manhattan transfer are they in boozing vinyl

[72:07]manhattan transfer hell i got the book over here i should go check next up we just lived in manhattan

[72:13]and we're in the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle

[72:13]of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle of the middle

[72:13]listen to wasted time and you might say to yourself god i wish i could hear that same song

[72:17]and it's just orchestral version well you're in luck we got the reprieve is that how i say it

[72:22]aaron reprieve reprise reprise what am i thinking of reprieve god i'm smarter than i'm smarter than

[72:28]words is this is this if you have the album is this the back half of side one or is this the

[72:32]beginning of side two it's the fourth track should be the end of side one right if this is the

[72:38]beginning of side two i would fucking throw this into the middle of the earth i think there's nine

[72:43]this is song five it's right in the middle yeah that's true somebody get get on this

[72:47]research team let's get on this is this if this starts side two give me a break this is a

[72:53]like if you were to rank this album if this and you flip it over this is what you hear

[73:00]that would have been the only way to listen to this this would be song one of side two

[73:05]if wikipedia is correct motherfucker you gotta be kidding me that is terrible

[73:10]themselves it's like a bad version of what's

[73:13]the the love lies whatever the elton john song oh my god victim of love now this is kind of

[73:23]interesting they recorded this entire song live except for the vocals and they wanted don felder

[73:28]to do it and he took a week to do it and they said don that was fine great job by the way don

[73:34]uh the manager wants to take you out to lunch the manager takes don felder out to lunch don henley

[73:39]steps in sings the whole song while he's gone

[73:43]this is the version you hear on the album can you imagine no i mean i i can't imagine i feel

[73:48]like that would be something that would happen to me in life it's like hey russ you've made a

[73:52]bunch of errors at shortstop the coach is gonna take you out talk to you then i go back and they've

[73:57]made like nine outs in a row and i'm out of the game i was just gonna say rob just put a calendar

[74:03]invite on mine for lunch tomorrow and i don't know it seemed like little rosie's gonna come

[74:08]right in and steal my job away from me can you say that again clearly so i can write down what

[74:13]you said

[74:13]just in case i needed to maybe do a adr little audio ad all right now i'm not gonna lie i didn't

[74:20]take notes on any of these other songs so god only knows what's going on here we have

[74:24]pretty maids all in a row i think this is the the first song sung by joe walsh after he joined eagles

[74:33]joe walsh's voice is so funny to me

[74:36]so i thought this one i think the whole album has kind of this

[74:43]sappy feel to it i think that's why we don't like it at times right but this is pretty sappy

[74:47]but then it kind of there's a point where it kicks in it gets a little more musical at some point but

[74:51]maybe a bit sappy agreed sappy i mean this is one where like i spaced out like oh i forgot

[74:57]this album's on i'm supposed to be listening and i like joe walsh

[75:01]it's about meeting of old friends or lovers and the feelings that come back with meeting an old

[75:08]friend or a lover have you guys ever ran into an old friend or an old lover and what was the feeling

[75:13]i think sometimes when i meet my wife's old lovers and i shake their hands and they squeeze

[75:18]my hands so tight as a show of dominance it's humiliating humiliating uh i would say to meet

[75:27]my old lover let me think what that would be like well it would be mrs mcgee next door she's 76 years

[75:35]old but i still give it to her every week she pays you in meatballs

[75:43]local gilfs right also also i'm gonna ignore that also

[75:48]you know who lives next you actually know who lives next door to me

[75:53]who's that ed lubber he's incredibly old but he's he's an old lubber i see him all the time

[75:59]i think he might be dead actually all right try and love again

[76:04]is that like remember there was an ed lover and dr dre there was like a different dr

[76:10]yes yeah i don't know what happened dr dre

[76:12]dr dre that it wasn't like hey there's two dr dre

[76:15]it's ed lubber right with a b what oh i thought it was a lover is it ed lover as well

[76:23]it cannot be lover can it yes

[76:25]i've been saying ed lubber my whole life

[76:33]what do you mean why would you think it was ed lubber i don't know

[76:37]and then he says it can't be ed lubber

[76:42]yeah why would it be ed lubber

[76:45]because that's his name ed lubber that would be like if someone called tupperware tubberware

[76:52]it's not tubberware it's that would be like if you called it toverware it's i mean ed lubber

[76:59]ed lubberware i don't know i thought it was like a pirate neighbor no that would rule oh i would

[77:06]have brought him he would have known because he'd be like oh i'm sorry it's ed lover and i'd be like

[77:10]wait what who i thought he was like a land lubber like a pirate i really did i thought it was ed

[77:15]lubber i don't even know what lubber is like blubber like on a seal or like a whale this is

[77:21]like the poo on my shirt it's blowing my mind makes me wonder if the poo on the shirt is made

[77:26]is where it's coming from you think this is a dream i had where's ed lubber and my shirt oh my god

[77:33]listen just like dicks this is the last resort

[77:40]ouch i think we skipped try and love again

[77:43]just like dicks this is try and love again

[77:49]no we played this one we played we did russell just loves this album so much he wants to keep

[77:56]listening to it more did we skip pretty maids all in a row maybe we didn't maybe we didn't

[78:01]skip this one no we skipped something no we didn't we didn't you're talking about only a

[78:06]little bit of it we were talking about ed lubber we were talking about ed lubber we were talking

[78:10]about old lovers because i was talking about my neighbor we were talking about meeting of old

[78:16]friends because it's pretty maids all in a row guys yeah sherlock sherlock booms is on the case

[78:22]i nailed it okay and we need to try and love again try and love again

[78:27]this is what i wrote down sometimes you try but you just need more time i wrote down on my notes

[78:34]i don't love this but it's a good song why does aaron not like this

[78:40]i feel bad you feel bad

[78:42]i actually i mean i like when the i actually i dig when they do the vocal arrangements i've

[78:51]i realized i just don't listen to don henley sing there's too much of it on this album why

[78:54]don't you like don henley so you're the you're a vocalist it's just like it's just a thin and

[78:58]reedy voice that just i don't understand why that's what you'd want to put forward as your

[79:04]your best face forward got it now i'm going to say this we have not talked about

[79:10]what a bunch of pricks the eagles are and i'm going to save that for the next eagles album

[79:14]that's on the list which is the uh eponymous eagles we're going to talk all about what a

[79:19]bunch of pricks they are on that album so i didn't know stay tuned that album is coming up i would

[79:23]guess in about four years all right so i think i think just to circle back just quickly i think

[79:29]don henley's on this a lot because don henley's a prick and just bullied his way on to doing oh

[79:34]is that okay well then yeah what makes him a prick i know i mean he's just i think he just

[79:40]you know he came in didn't he come in a little late too compared to the original yeah yeah you

[79:45]know then i think he just kind of basically took over then he left went did his own solo career

[79:49]for a while and he's got some songs that i like you know from his solo career but um i think he

[79:55]just kind of bullied his way into being the drummer and then the singer and getting on to

[80:00]different albums and things can you guys shut up for a second because sometimes a person they just

[80:05]feel like they have a vision and they wanted to get done and sometimes people will take that as

[80:10]and maybe you know people get mad or their wives get mad for things you say but really you're

[80:14]trying to be creatively consistent and uh and all right the joke has gone on long enough

[80:19]the last guys just like dicks the last resort

[80:23]i was thinking of matt a lot listening to this album because i know matt

[80:30]his big thing with this podcast is he said we shouldn't be negative about albums we just

[80:35]shouldn't do it and i'm trying to find the positives in this song

[80:40]in this song or this album what did you say in this song i will so you guys are shitting on it

[80:49]pretty hard like is this worse than care the carol king one for you guys or where like how far down

[80:54]by a million yes yeah i don't know i think this song is well intentioned and so then the other

[81:02]question would be like do you guys talk to your parents and say hey are you into the eagles because

[81:07]there's like this is what i'm talking about i'm not talking about the eagles i'm talking about the

[81:10]the biggest selling albums ever there's all these older people that must love it what are we missing

[81:14]here what are we missing that other people saw i i think i honestly think it was when the eagles

[81:20]came out with their unplugged album it was right at the height of us listening to music right it

[81:26]came out right like at the height of mtv and i just got so much eagles in my face like seeing

[81:32]them all 12 of them up there with their acoustic guitars i think it just put a bad taste in my

[81:37]mouth for the rest of my life because i do that i like life and the fact that i'm not going to

[81:40]fast lane i do like hotel california i just i am having trouble being positive about this album

[81:45]so maybe that's why i wrote such a nice song about you guys to begin with because i knew this was

[81:49]going to be a rough road but i don't know matt matt you're you're positive give me give me a

[81:53]positive thing about this album right now make me happy well besides the songs right i mean there's

[82:00]some absolute like besides the songs but it you know it's sold like i said it sold the 500 million

[82:09]records or whatever it's sold it's sold the 500 million records or whatever it's sold it's sold the

[82:10]500 million records or whatever it was or 50 was it 50 i don't know we had the number around

[82:12]somewhere 32 or something i don't know but it was the fifth best-selling album of all time like if

[82:18]you're going to have a list of the best albums of all time there have to be on there somewhere i

[82:23]don't care what it is you know i i mean are we getting to the rating system here we can go let's

[82:29]get the rating system let's get into the rating system matt's begging for it he wants it so bad

[82:34]i'm gonna give it to him

[82:40]and very popular beck did it better rating system oh yeah

[82:45]matt rolling well-toned rolling bone or rolling grown what do you think of the eagles hotel

[82:54]california i mean i think it's rolling grown but not by much i think it should be like a top 250

[83:01]album but there's just so many albums that if you look just 5 or 10 or 20 below this one that

[83:07]i think are such better albums this

[83:10]seems like a very nice easy safe we're playing for the radio kind of a record right like i i think

[83:18]that you can throw this in with like the shania twain's of the world and the george straights of

[83:24]the world and the uh who's the young troops of the world right i mean they just they sold a ton

[83:32]of records because they just had some great songs that were great in the radio and they had a wide

[83:37]appeal right but were they great

[83:40]records do they do anything do they stretch do they make people want to start playing music like

[83:46]them i don't know i don't think so you know i don't so it's hard for me to say like this is

[83:52]such a great groundbreaking album when i think songs in the key of life came out this year

[83:57]there's just there's a ton of other albums that came out this year that you just boston boston

[84:05]sold like 25 million records that's an album for you you know things like that

[84:10]i mean so 1976 i've been saying 1994 is probably like the best year ever for albums but it might

[84:15]be 1976 when you kind of look at the lineup there so not to take this too much farther i just think

[84:21]this is very bland but it's sold a ton of records because it has a huge commercial appeal right and

[84:26]that's why it's up this high but i don't think it should be this high i think it should be a little

[84:30]lower so i'm gonna say rolling groaned all right uh russell what do you think rolling well tone

[84:37]that means this album is perfect at one point

[84:40]17 or 118 i can't remember anymore what that is this perfect at 118 is this album should be lower

[84:46]it's a rolling bone it shouldn't be up this high it should be where the original list had it at 67

[84:52]or is this a rolling groan this album does not belong this high up on the list

[84:58]uh i i normally like the commercial hits you guys we when we hear albums with a bunch of

[85:04]commercial hits i like them and i i like some of the commercial hits on this one for me it's just

[85:10]too sappy it's kind of too soft and like if i were to put a continuum like i mentioned uh kanye late

[85:15]registration when we talked about last week if i were to put a continuum of one is bob newhart

[85:20]and 10 is late registration this is like under a five yeah like it's it to me it's closer to

[85:26]newhart than it is to to late registration so for me i'm gonna say it's a slight rolling groan but i

[85:32]don't think it's as bad i feel like it's kind of like a it's almost like a uh nickelback type thing

[85:40]selling a lot of records so people have to have to hate on them a little bit i think they're just

[85:45]like catching shit because they're really popular but it's not really for me i probably won't come

[85:49]back and listen to it again all right aaron what do you think rolling well toned or rolling bone

[85:54]or rolling groan yeah this just doesn't really do it for me uh it's too much don henley singing

[86:01]i think there's some nice moments with the vocal arrangements um i think there's just not enough

[86:06]happening to justify it being where it is so i'm going to call it a day

[86:10]call it a rolling groan aaron if you want to know anything about vocal arrangements there's

[86:14]this group called manhattan transfer i'm going to check them out as soon as we hang up yeah i'm more

[86:19]of a singers unlimited guy i don't know what you guys know that's or singers limited i can't

[86:23]remember anymore they lost i don't they're not as good they lost the grammy uh listen folks

[86:28]unfortunately you are incorrect again this gets a rolling best-selling album folks hotel california

[86:40]is so bizarre it in 1976 this album is the sixth greatest selling album of all time

[86:47]the fifth greatest selling album of all time also from 1976 the eagles greatest hits no

[86:55]they released this album and the greatest hits in the same year and they both sold like hotcakes

[87:00]it's crazy do you guys want to live in a world let's say the top four albums never existed and

[87:05]we lived in a world where those two were the one and two best-selling albums ever

[87:10]yeah you what can you do i mean that's that's fucked that that makes you think though that

[87:14]we are missing i think matt's right we are missing something i think in 1976 that we sit down we put

[87:18]on this album we'd have our minds fucking blown i think i think it's just the way it is no we would

[87:23]not have our minds blown no we would just be doing what our friends and neighbors are doing

[87:27]listening to some pleasant tunes i think it just it spans across so many genres like it's kind of

[87:34]in rock it's kind of an easy listening it's kind of in country it's kind of in old americana you

[87:40]just so it's just a wide-ranging thing but that's why it sold so many records and so many people

[87:45]you know like it and some people love it some people hate it but there's a lot of people that

[87:49]like it so hey aaron you know what you should play for thanksgiving the eagles hotel california

[87:56]honestly not the worst thanksgiving music actually i can definitely hear it now

[88:02]also coming out in 1976 now i don't want to get too weird about this so the eagles

[88:07]for the end their greatest hits sold

[88:10]41 million copies okay 41 million copies also coming out in 1976 ironically an album called

[88:19]coming out by a little band named manhattan transfer sold 20 000 copies the same year 20

[88:28]000 copies makes you start thinking on this now doesn't it 20 this might this might be way too high

[88:35]on the list 20 000 we have more downloads of this podcast than they sold of that album

[88:40]that's wild to me folks next up next week i can't believe it can you believe this i didn't know this

[88:47]happened can you believe sly and the family stone covered eminem what next week we've got stand

[88:55]stand by sly and the family stone sometimes i scribble addresses too sloppy when i jout

[89:01]whoa

[89:05]bob seger night blues came out in 76 oh wow

[89:09]doobie bro

[89:10]now here's what i don't get about bob seger's night moves

[89:13]if you look at the lyrics tell me what this means

[89:17]she was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes with points on her own sitting

[89:23]wait never mind i forget what it's about sorry rob you mentioned a spot on your shirt earlier

[89:29]i got i got into my tickler file and it seems to have left a spot on my pants maybe we could

[89:33]talk through how it got there

[89:35]a tickler file

[89:39]i'll get you every time

[89:40]two weeks in a row with the exact same bid but oh well

[89:43]goodbye
