Michael Jackson: Thriller (1982) (... and the dangers of being too nice to werewolves!)
[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by
[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the
[00:09]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts and we promise to do almost no
[00:13]research all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it
[00:20]better from 1982 this is michael jackson's thriller hey guys thanks for meeting me in person today for
[00:27]this recording session i really appreciate it i didn't think it was safe for us to meet in person
[00:31]but aaron kept texting scamdemic stink scamdemic over and over again so i thought he's gonna get
[00:36]in trouble but yeah no it seems you know he doesn't care so here's the deal is that i did
[00:41]rent this big spooky mansion that we can record at so let's just walk
[00:45]let's just walk up to it right now let's check all right
[00:47]oh
[00:57]rob something's behind you
[01:02]the podcast hour is close at hand and our four hosts will make their plans
[01:16]russ is at the record store and dating online and trying to make us have a shorter run time
[01:23]rob's editing episodes all night and day
[01:27]and thinking of dirty things to say
[01:31]matt's also working hard as well making spreadsheets of things that can go to hell
[01:39]hope it goes all right wow what a singing voice yeah honey hope you're in a mess start a fight
[01:49]uh-huh looking at downloads on the website
[01:53]a number of listeners to slide
[01:57]and aaron's locked in his garage so sweet
[02:00]looking at photos online of feet thinking of songs that are so obscure
[02:07]and his funny laugh is the only reason he is here
[02:11]and though the quality will take a dive with only old jokes in our quiver
[02:18]we are forced by this damn list
[02:24]to make a podcast about the michael jackson's
[02:27]album
[02:28]when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time
[02:43]but you're just too lazy to look it up online
[02:47]if you want to hear four guys who chat and then they get off track
[02:53]i've got the perfect podcast
[02:57]for you jack
[02:58]beck did it better
[03:01]it was so hard for me not to make that whole thing just making fun of aaron
[03:04]i had to really like everyone got like half a verse and then aaron got two
[03:08]all right hey everybody this is beck did it better
[03:12]and i've got some guys here who are always trying to be starting something
[03:16]let's introduce it
[03:17]uh we've got russell in minneapolis
[03:19]russell how are you doing today
[03:20]four walls one whole bean tonight
[03:22]if this podcast is just an apple
[03:23]then let me take a bite rob
[03:25]so
[03:27]sounds good we got
[03:29]matt matt in minnesota how are you doing matt
[03:31]i'm doing great rob thanks for having me
[03:33]and we've got something aaron just sent me a chat message
[03:36]it says please refer to me as pyt
[03:38]okay and here we have my own little pyt aaron how are you doing on california
[03:42]i need some loving
[03:45]all right so we're off to a very bad start there
[03:48]all right
[03:49]that is the grossest thing you could have said
[03:52]okay so
[03:53]only line i could think of from this side
[03:55]so everybody let's get into our podcast
[03:57]our favorite segment it's time for rollin going
[04:00]it's it's it's it's time to see what everybody's up to
[04:06]it's time for roll it
[04:09]you know at the end of that sound clip i was going to try to clip together a bunch of aaron's laughing
[04:13]but i i was like nah it got too late for me to do it
[04:17]all right rolling going everybody uh russell rolling going how's it going for you
[04:22]it's going great it's going great a few weeks back i told you guys i i flew to
[04:27]a conference for the first time in a long time and i told you about some of my pet peeves
[04:31]well i flew again a few weeks back and i've got more pet peeves i need to share them with you
[04:36]i need to see what you guys think about this i can't handle just keeping this to myself
[04:41]all right let's see what you got here
[04:44]all right i know we talked about this one before
[04:46]but tilting the seat what the fuck
[04:49]tilting the seat doesn't seem like that big of a deal when you don't need to use a laptop
[04:56]but i was going to this this conference in dallas and i was not prepared for it so i needed to use
[05:02]the time on the plane to do work and to read and to type and use my laptop and i sit down
[05:07]and i'm not even sitting there for 30 seconds and the guy tilts back and let's just be frank i'm too
[05:13]big of a dude to fit in the seat behind me and use the computer so let's just lay the wood on
[05:19]these guys who are people who tilt the seat back people who tilt the seat back are monsters and
[05:25]they should go to jail and they should go to jail and they should go to jail and they should go to
[05:26]jail okay they are the worst kind of people they are the kind of people that make society a terrible
[05:31]place they're the fucking people that are leaving the shopping carts just willy-nilly around the
[05:35]parking lot even though it's not that much work to put them back except at costco where for some
[05:39]reason they don't have a lot of those car things leave them anywhere they're huge cards they're
[05:42]fine uh i've never been to costco no no it's not your turn we're not doing this
[05:49]i'm being a bit sealer what a bit what are you doing i've never been to one i just i'm saying
[05:55]i'm just responding i'm just i i imagine the card situation is terrible the idea of buying food in a
[06:01]reasonable amount is laughable to me i had an early flight it was a 7 a.m flight so i was up
[06:06]before 5 a.m to get up and get going and so this was one of these flights where the flight attendant
[06:12]decided that they were going to be the funny person on the flight and talk way longer than
[06:17]necessary and try to make every sentence very cute and very charming the the flight attendant's
[06:24]speech should not be a funny person on the flight and talk way longer than necessary and try to make
[06:25]it last more than a minute this speech lasted i would say eight to ten minutes and then they
[06:30]repeated it while we were in the air what are your guys thoughts on flight attendants who have to be
[06:35]the funniest person on the plane the worst the worst absolute worst yeah and you know southwest
[06:41]has that and you know i'm not typically flying southwest because they're usually up well they
[06:45]don't have a first class right don't they yeah yeah so what's the point that's sitting in the
[06:50]cabin on a virgin airlines flight i mean if i have to right i mean sometimes it makes sense
[06:55]if you have to but i don't know there's nothing worse because then there's also shitting on
[06:59]southwest i'll tell you right there's also the old lady who's got more bags than she knows what
[07:04]to do with who won't just put them up top and thinks she can stuff them all underneath because
[07:07]she needs to have her crochet bag and her crossword bag and everything she's the only one laughing at
[07:12]all the jokes so it makes this continue you know because if if nobody's laughing at your jokes you
[07:17]don't say jokes right rob isn't that right uh yeah i guess as long as you got to keep trucking along
[07:22]because some people don't understand your kind of humor and then later it comes out that you're
[07:24]actually a genius
[07:25]but people didn't understand it i read his book and he had a very funny line where he said how
[07:28]many people here have never raised their hand and then i use that in class all the time and i think
[07:33]it's very good but i do have to say for me it's just awkward right like i i try to be funny in
[07:38]class or whatever and i i bomb a lot but it's just a bunch of kids sitting there like they
[07:42]don't know any better like to bomb like that in a group of people who are already on there they're
[07:47]grumpy because everybody's leaning back it's an early morning flight so russ got in wearing his
[07:51]robe and he thinks he should be able to do that he got a big argument about that it's like
[07:55]yeah this why why waste our time just to tell us how not to die like you're not gonna die if this
[08:00]whole thing fucking goes down anyway like it's gonna oh there's a raft on board oh great we'll
[08:05]just get off under the raft give me a fucking break i think it goes one a little bit further
[08:13]if you're watching a movie oh and you know and you know you've got like 15 minutes left and you know
[08:19]you can feel it going down and then that lady who's been a flight attendant for 30 years gets on and
[08:24]goes
[08:25]we would like to thank you for flying the delta today
[08:30]please please fill out this form if you liked our service and you want to be like speed the
[08:39]fuck up so i could finish my goddamn movie you know and there's nothing worse i can't remember
[08:43]if the bus crashes or yeah it's like just stop talking nobody cares nobody wants to hear you
[08:51]and i'm sorry if somebody's that's trying to get to the end of the notebook he wants to know if
[08:55]they get together i just want to get to the end of the night i legit almost had a complete spaz when
[08:59]the guy kept talking and kept going on and on the next one that really bothered me though i gotta i
[09:04]gotta get your guys opinion on this so this was an early morning flight and what they said was
[09:07]we're gonna shut all the windows we're gonna turn all the cabin lights down so you guys can sleep on
[09:12]the way back well i hope they shut the windows otherwise you'd get sucked out of there the first
[09:16]yeah it was very awkward you're not supposed to laugh at that i got sucked out and then i got
[09:20]stuck in the window it was very awkward everyone's like hey that guy's too big you shouldn't be on
[09:24]that plane right now it was it was quite embarrassing it's like it's like oh he's
[09:28]getting sucked out the window he seems to be rotating to try to come off oh no wait he's
[09:31]just putting his penis out the window that's a hot tub move nevermind that's rosy i mean
[09:43]but so we're on this early morning flight they turn off all the lights in the cabin and the
[09:53]people to the right of me are like oh my god what's going on here i'm like oh my god what's
[09:54]on the far side the side they're opening the window so there is literally like a blazing
[09:59]bright light in my eyes the whole time and i kept like kind of like raiders of the lost ark
[10:04]i kept maneuvering and like making this like i would look at them and stare and then look back
[10:09]and like kept shifting in my chair and it just they were like nope there's gonna be a bright
[10:13]light shining on you your attempt to sleep is gone i was on a flight once where the person uh
[10:19]across the way from me was taking flash photography at like midnight and it was lighting up the whole
[10:23]thing and i was like oh my god what's going on here i'm like oh my god what's going on here i'm like
[10:24]what what the fuck is going on you gotta you gotta put your your privates away on that flight
[10:28]they won't be taking those pictures you can't be doing hot tub moves at 30 it was it was flashing
[10:34]photography where it was you know it's a whole thing a selfie camera and you know it's just like
[10:39]that i i totally get you know what actually when those when the uh the people on the plane give
[10:43]the speech i don't know what to call them where i don't get canceled but i suppose talking about
[10:47]sticking your dick out of an airplane is what's going to get me canceled not that but and now i
[10:51]don't have to edit it out yes uh
[10:54]when uh when they would give that long speech during the movie and i'm sitting next to my
[10:58]daughters because i love i love having two kids i put them on either side of me on the plane i'm
[11:02]just like andre the giant sitting there i have so much room and like they can't complain about
[11:06]my elbows exactly and when they start giving the speech when they start giving the speech
[11:12]and my music is paused i literally just go like this i raise up my hand above the seat and i go
[11:15]like this but the whole time they're talking as high as i can i give them a big thumbs down
[11:19]a big thumbs down the whole time when they're talking my daughter's mortified the whole time
[11:23]and i'm like i don't want to talk to you
[11:24]to do this thumbs down like so the last thing i gave a thumbs down to and obviously i'm not a
[11:29]parent you guys are a parent so you're going to have i really what i want to hear is how do you
[11:34]guys deal with this i was the guy who was the adult sitting across from the mom and like the
[11:40]three-year-old kid where he's throwing the ball at me the whole time the kids throw in a tantrum
[11:45]for two hours what do you guys do when your kids throw in the tantrum on the plane i'll i'll say
[11:51]this there's there's two types of parents there's two types of parents there's two types of parents
[11:54]ones that are trying like absolutely trying to get their kid to calm down whatever and you give
[11:59]them an absolute pass if they're giving it an effort you give them a pass but if they're the
[12:04]ones who are sitting in the middle seat just looking at their own phone and playing their
[12:08]own video games and their two kids are on the side of them just doing god knows what that guy
[12:13]boo that guy mean old daddy that guy to all those parents out there say hi to your new daddy
[12:21]that was a parenting tip from matt
[12:24]no but absolutely like dealing with a kid who doesn't want to be somewhere and you're in a
[12:31]closed spot with a bunch of people around it is the worst and as long as that mom or dad are trying
[12:36]i mean i give them an absolute pass and just say hey you're having a worse day than i am this one
[12:41]was trying so i gave her credit but there was a point where i legit thought to myself for a few
[12:47]few seconds what if i just like give this kid the evil eye and then he's gonna think like oh that's
[12:52]an old dude who's giving me the evil eye and i'm like oh that's an old dude who's giving me the
[12:54]evil eye i need to shape the shape up you know but then i didn't do it because i was afraid as a
[12:59]parent i would appreciate that i mean yes you know you don't you don't like to get the stink eye from
[13:02]people but if that if you did that and it worked i would i would be grateful so i think it's worth
[13:07]a try yeah i i you i i think when you're a parent with a kid on the plane you instantly have nothing
[13:12]but sympathy for other parents on planes from then on because you realize like sometimes the the
[13:18]pressure just fucks with their kid's head these you know they got little squishy heads or whatever
[13:21]and they just can't like they can't handle it and there's
[13:24]nothing a parent can do and you just feel it because when you're that person it's kind of
[13:27]like if you've ever worked a job in retail or selling things to people for the rest of your
[13:31]life or like if you're a waiter or whatever for the rest of your life you have sympathy for that
[13:35]position because you know just how much it sucks and that was rob's tip of the week aaron rolling
[13:41]going how's it going with you oh it's going it's going really well it uh let's see it's it's we're
[13:47]recording on a friday have we mentioned what day it is am i allowed to say this
[13:54]friday the 13th today we're recording on friday the 13th so uh that's that's been fun i've been
[14:01]thinking about that today my son really likes to hear spooky stories like he just hasn't gotten
[14:06]over halloween uh so anytime we pick him up from school then he says dad tell me a spooky story and
[14:11]i'm i'm kind of out of spooky stories but i did try a werewolf story today so i had to explain
[14:17]what werewolves were a little bit so that was the werewolf story man i i think i kind of just gave the
[14:23]rundown of like what a werewolf is right now this is very terrifying and then and i did yeah i mean
[14:30]we do try not to keep things too violent so yeah i kind of got up to a point where i was talking
[14:34]about you know oh werewolves like to kind of keep to themselves and stay away from people and then
[14:39]you know so they kind of like hide off in the trees or the bushes and this kid's gonna get
[14:43]attacked by a werewolf and it's gonna be the biggest mistake you've ever made in your life
[14:47]he's gonna think all werewolves are tame and he's gonna go toward probably try to feed it
[14:51]this werewolf is an omnivore meaning
[14:53]he meets eat yeah meats and vegetables and meats are not good for him and he should not be like that
[15:00]my dad said werewolves are friends i'm gonna go pet it but i was thinking about you know part two
[15:06]i was like oh you know werewolves like they get you know i was trying to tell the story about they
[15:10]get the moon on their skin and then they grow claws and teeth and their eyes go yellow and all
[15:14]they get really good at basketball right i mean they can go i was gonna bring that one up 60 dumps
[15:18]and jump i know i don't i thought about bringing that one up and then i got stuck this happens to
[15:22]me i get out on a limb and i'm like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god
[15:23]these stories and i was like and then the werewolf uh ran into a human and then they kind of had a
[15:29]face off and yeah i didn't really know where to where to go michael j fox was like five foot four
[15:33]i don't care if he was a werewolf or not he would have sucked at basketball yeah i did that's what
[15:38]that one's not believable at all can you imagine though blocking a shot from a werewolf all time
[15:43]that'd be a great story yeah you yeah you tell them time travel aaron did you tell your son
[15:50]any like creepy stories like i always remember the story about like the drip
[15:53]drip drip drip drip drip and it was like you know blood dropping from the ceiling like
[15:58]you tell any really scary stories we're like oh he's not gonna sleep tonight
[16:02]no oh my god no because if he doesn't sleep then i'm gonna be in his room laying on the floor no
[16:08]just three in the morning which was last night just test positive for the virus and go back to
[16:11]that garage your wife's gonna do that no because my son doesn't my son doesn't forget anything
[16:18]so he's three and a half and i've played the podcast for him a few times and so
[16:23]uh that's not tonight i said so i said i said hey hey deb would you would you help me do some
[16:29]research for my podcast can we just put the michael jackson record on one more time because
[16:32]i do have an own thriller on vinyl and he got real concerned and like he was he was kind of
[16:37]doing this real hard thinking face you know i was like well let's put the michael jackson record on
[16:41]and he said he said but i don't i don't want that song where they get off track
[16:48]i want the michael jackson record instead like he thought i was gonna make him
[16:53]listen to beck did it better oh he was talking about the theme song and he wanted to listen to
[16:59]michael jackson instead so i can't tell him creepy stuff because he never forgets your son needs to
[17:03]believe that we are the kings of media and not michael jackson like he needs to grow up thinking
[17:08]we are bigger than michael jackson you need to rewind that area and fix that i know i gotta fix
[17:14]it he needs to think you're the king of pops not the king of pop oh no that was a good one i like
[17:23]that i like that one uh yeah no i yeah i would probably you know what you could do is show him
[17:27]the thriller video that video scared the shit out of me as a kid when he turned with the yellow eyes
[17:32]i know i had nightmares about that but it's a good way it's like a good kind of like low level
[17:36]it's and it's a werewolf show right and he doesn't kill anybody now in that case he is going to think
[17:41]werewolves love to dance so that will be a problem he sure looks like he's going to kill that lady
[17:45]though that's that man that video was so scary it was scary and it was it's a i mean it's a huge
[17:50]part of this album right and what we're going to talk about but god that it was
[17:53]i don't know terrifying it's terrifying show it to him let's go matt rolling going how's it going
[17:58]it's going well rob i uh i didn't hear i didn't hear any good i didn't hear any good facts on
[18:05]the radio this week so i had to go i had to go look for one and i found a pretty good one i think
[18:10]uh do you know have you heard of a group called ace of base oh yeah absolutely yeah you know what
[18:16]i was gonna go uh i was gonna go to their show and i was lost i didn't where to go and then i did
[18:23]uh i did see the sign but thank you for stepping on that joke that i'm gonna have to edit out all
[18:26]that other shit you guys so i i'm just i'm reading from wikipedia because i saw this on another
[18:32]website but so in early 1992 ace of base sent their demo tape to some some producer named
[18:39]dennis with a z pop the demo tape including the song called mr ace um it was at first he was not
[18:49]very happy with it okay he didn't like it at all but then he was like oh my god i'm gonna go to
[18:52]but the tape got stuck in his cassette player and so he had to listen to it over and over again this
[18:58]was the story yeah and and so then gradually he realized that the song you know the group had some
[19:03]potential so he didn't follow up with them they followed up a couple months later he said oh yeah
[19:07]come on in he came in cut a couple demos one of them being all that she wants then you know
[19:15]yeah it's like russ on the plane he's next to another baby they put it out in an insulin went to
[19:22]number one on the danish charts oh the danish charts i've always been in the house that's all
[19:27]i can't believe it i can't believe it beat jorgen florgen i have a push notification on the danish
[19:33]charts whenever like someone breaks into the top 400 on the danish charts i get an update
[19:36]my phone has been blowing up recently the danish charts are also only three long
[19:41]they're in the danish charts your last place yeah so this is so this is this is july and october
[19:50]went to number two in australia
[19:52]and then from there it was number one in germany and and hit the top 10 in the u.s and stuff like
[19:57]that in 94 so from there but all because uh stinking tape got stuck in a guy's uh
[20:02]we play we had that cd growing up i mean that those songs were like they're still bangers like
[20:08]they're not even like an embarrassing song that i like it's just a good song i think i love ace of
[20:13]base and you got to admit that name of the band stellar i think that makes the whole thing any
[20:18]other name not not nearly as good there should be an ace of base cover band that's going to be
[20:22]a band that does everything in a super low voice like i saw this
[20:26]god russ we have so many good ideas now we have to put this podcast on a tape and go jam it into
[20:37]everybody's cars and we're set we just need to make a thousand tapes or more rosie rosie you gotta
[20:44]gotta ask him rob rob how you doing rob oh i'm supposed to put a post-it on my computer rob
[20:50]roll it going how's it going
[20:52]thank you guys so much no it's fine it's fine it's a lonely it's a lonely job at the top here
[20:56]but here's the deal is that is that uh this episode is coming out the tuesday after thanksgiving we
[21:04]did miss our thanksgiving episode okay so we i know that we are all thankful for having a chance
[21:09]to do this podcast uh and some of us are thankful that they just come in and do it and then don't
[21:13]actually do anything after that and that's fine too uh but here's the deal that joke came off way
[21:18]meaner than i meant it to be sorry about that steve martin style raise your hand if you do
[21:22]nothing on this podcast yeah yeah yeah no that that seems to be that seems to be very mean of
[21:27]me to say i should not say that uh but it is it does get me excited for the thanksgiving you know
[21:31]teachers always love thanksgiving because it basically means like we're gonna be it's breaks
[21:34]the rest it's breaks from here to june baby like it's we're set this first part of the year done
[21:39]break time but i did want to ask you guys uh did you guys have any weird or uh like not normally
[21:46]thanksgiving food growing up or that now with your new with your new new family is that the
[21:51]right way to put our family together i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know
[21:52]family now like do you guys have any fun thanksgiving traditions or anything or any kind
[21:55]of cool food that most people wouldn't have no i was just gonna say i just my mom's side of the
[22:00]family she's got six siblings and i thought your mom comes over and cooks the dinner i thought
[22:04]that's what you're gonna say but no we go over we go over to uncle's house in eden prairie minnesota
[22:09]and you know it's great and see uh that side of the family twice a year thanksgiving christmas
[22:13]and that's it but there's this thing that my grandma made and it literally is just marshmallows
[22:18]cut up fruit and whipped cream and it's they're a cool whip
[22:22]and it just put it all together and let it chill and it's like the most simple basic thing
[22:26]but that's all i ever ever associate thanksgiving with that's the only time i ever eat it all year
[22:32]and i love it and i take like four or five things home uh containers home of it and i have it for
[22:38]like three days straight then i'm sick of it for another year but that's all so it's pretty basic
[22:42]um but it's something that i i absolutely um associate thanksgiving with aaron how about you
[22:49]i have two thoughts uh one about the the past um which is that i can't i so once again as i've
[22:56]mentioned on the podcast i know memory is is funny and maybe i'm wrong about this but i i do have a
[23:03]memory of eating pheasant one year for thanksgiving at an uncle's house and it was a pheasant that he
[23:10]himself had uh hunted and killed and it was it was pretty dry if you didn't eat it without the um
[23:17]gravy over the egg noodles they're not they're not very big how many people were at this thanksgiving
[23:21]like yeah not many i have a small family it's like you and your uncle definitely found
[23:25]uh a small pellet from a shotgun uh in there was definitely like lead yeah in the pheasant yeah
[23:33]but i'm also excited that you asked this rub because just tonight i cooked one of my uh new
[23:40]uh what i consider a thanksgiving food although it has nothing to do with me or my family but
[23:45]um this is uh green
[23:47]i use i like collard greens but any kind of hearty green cooked with uh coconut milk and
[23:52]peanut butter and then some ginger and you gotta have coconut yeah so coconut i didn't even know
[23:57]they had ginger greens so it's probably traditional for some folks but uh the coconut
[24:06]coconut peanut greens are my my non-traditional food that i like to have now i don't know i think
[24:12]a lot of us enjoy having coconut peanut greens around i think that sounds very good to me
[24:16]definitely they're delicious
[24:17]i mean it sounds like a color of a crayon somewhere i don't even not my best joke
[24:21]edit that out edit the whole thing all right the color you painted your bathroom all right
[24:26]we're gonna start again let's start again here all right so no okay uh russ what about you
[24:31]so i've got this really big i i prepare something really nice for my family every year and i do it
[24:38]three ways and that's like very cool like you guys know i like going to do um i when i travel
[24:43]i love to go to a restaurant that's run by someone from the show top chef and i love to go to a
[24:47]chef and so i like preparing things things three ways and so when i go to my family's thanksgiving
[24:52]every every year i prepare vanilla coconut greens just like aaron does in three different ways every
[25:00]year it's an amazing thing my family loves it it's super healthy like they're very hearty people
[25:07]from the midwest and like i love the way you prepared these vanilla coconut greens um just
[25:13]the way i liked it in the deep fryer yeah um it baked and broiled so it's vanilla coconut greens
[25:21]every time oh well i yeah transported in a metal bucket i didn't tell you russell but i wanted
[25:27]interesting food and you're talking about coconut to be metal metal coconut greens is that what we're
[25:32]talking about i wasn't even paying attention i'm sorry to be vanilla to be fair matt my my family's
[25:38]on the other side of the aisle so they like that kind of pollution so i show up with like the
[25:42]plastic yeah that's
[25:43]like i can't even tell you how many plastic bags i burned in the backyard after thanksgiving when
[25:48]the meal's done just take a styrofoam container go throw it on the tire fire out there don't worry
[25:52]about it it's fine hey you see the resource you see that duck over there go throw that go throw
[25:57]that six-pack thing right around its neck and let it roll yeah vanilla coconut greens rob that's what
[26:04]i do i just i just want to go back really quick i do want to give this a recipe i learned from
[26:09]michael w20 who's a great food author so i don't want i don't want the moment to go by he's
[26:13]i'm sure he's listening so i want to be fair aaron i know enough wait a minute what was that guy's name
[26:17]i got a pen now i gotta write it down what was his name michael w20 and that stands for michael
[26:22]that's what we're asking rosie that's what we're saying what is the recipe what is the recipe we're
[26:36]sorry that again rosie is so happy to come on here and just have three doofuses interrupted for an
[26:41]hour while he tries to say something sensical
[26:43]this would be like if i went on a zoom recording with my nieces and nephews they just made fun of
[26:49]me for the whole time i was like wait wait i'm so much smarter than you guys and i'm listening
[26:54]to you rip on me vanilla coconut greens i'm telling you about michael w20 and all you're
[26:59]saying is wear them titties come on i'm just repeating my own jokes over an hour jesus christ
[27:07]it's a low point i will you know what right michael wear them titties
[27:13]we do own a four slot toaster uh just to cook as much bread as we need for stuffing but the
[27:22]stuffing is real basic i went to a thanksgiving once you know it's really weird going over to
[27:26]somebody else's place for thanksgiving where they don't make that thing that you're used to
[27:30]it's the worst i went to one and they put sausage in the stuffing and i was like that's the that's
[27:35]good stuff i was like no no this is awful i think i think there's enough meat i don't need it my
[27:42]stuffing thanksgiving is something you need to be like comfortable with as a person like i remember
[27:46]there have been times where we've we've had friends of you know brother sister myself
[27:51]we invite like people new people and new people at your thanksgiving is the worst it's the worst
[27:57]like as much as like i'm a very social date looks over i'm a very like social person i get along
[28:04]with a lot of people but like at thanksgiving a lot of social people say yeah i'm very social
[28:09]i'm i'm social i get along with people but you're the worst
[28:12]but at thanksgiving if you show up and like at thanksgiving you just want to like
[28:16]unbuckle the belt another loop you want to eat a bunch you don't want to have to worry about like
[28:20]entertaining or being polite to some new person that's not kind of in your in your world new
[28:26]people at thanksgiving and that shit now no you should you should only be allowed to spend time
[28:32]with people that you've been friends or family with for seven years right yeah my wife my wife's
[28:37]vegetarian and so my my family's absolutely not okay and so everybody
[28:42]if you if you have a vegetarian and you've got one vegetarian and 30 people who are not right
[28:47]they're always trying to say oh well do you eat fish no i'm a vegetarian you know like right oh
[28:52]but do you eat chicken so that kind of thing but but they try to say you know everybody's very nice
[28:56]and they're like hey you know we'll bring bring something a dish for you and we'll try to make
[29:00]something she's always like don't worry about me i'll i'll adjust it's not a big deal like
[29:04]and so the first time she went over to my my family my mom's side she's like they're like
[29:10]bring some okay i'll bring over some brussels sprouts she makes some really nice brussels
[29:13]sprouts and stuff like that so she brings over this big pan of it right and this is big
[29:18]thing metal box right and so bring it set it out there sarah takes her two scoops puts it on her
[29:25]plate and that's all that anybody took the whole day oh no why did they ask me kind of you know
[29:33]like it's just so i don't know it's it's it's absolutely to russell's point just don't don't
[29:39]introduce anything new don't try anything new just stick with the basics stick with the classics and
[29:43]call it a day you made a mistake you made a mistake you should have brought the uh vanilla
[29:47]the vanilla cocoa beans or greens or whatever we're talking about but yeah my my lady's vegetarian
[29:53]too so my you know that's been my journey is i usually cook turkey and then we try to make a lot
[29:57]of veggie sides but uh we're yeah we're we're all alone just the three of us this year at thanksgiving
[30:02]so we're actually gonna um just do take out for part of it and then i'll make some turkey but
[30:07]that's it i've decided i'm gonna claim back to you and i'm gonna claim back to you and i'm gonna
[30:09]this year too and just go like straight pumpkin pie and they're gonna be like hey have you noticed
[30:14]russ is at like three full pumpkin pies i'm like i'm vegetarian i'm not gonna eat that deep fried
[30:19]turkey but that pumpkin pie i'm gonna go to town on that stuff yeah it's a healthy lifestyle choice
[30:26]yeah i think for thanksgiving this year i'm just gonna smoke all right so
[30:33]just that's all i do is just smoke cigarettes all thanksgiving like wait a minute that's not
[30:39]the point of this dip them dip them in that vanilla bean whatever aaron's making and it'll
[30:43]be so so much healthier for you that's vanilla what is that aaron again it's coconut peanut
[30:50]greens oh my gosh why did we think it was vanilla what was that vanilla there i'm very confused
[30:55]because does it really matter is that no you know i went to the i went to the doctor once
[31:01]because my coconut penis greens wait a minute there's a joke in there my coco nuts
[31:09]peanuts vanilla coconuts peanuts vanilla wait for it hold on hold on guys wait wait wait don't
[31:17]we gotta be quiet let rob think hold on my coconut peanuts bleeds no that was a real thing okay i did
[31:23]i wouldn't go to the hospital for that it's not that big a deal so it doesn't matter that's getting
[31:28]edited out all that stuff's getting edited out talk all you want it's gonna tough that out it's
[31:32]gone oh yeah no you think it's natural bleeding well thank you for just finishing what you said
[31:39]what a transition my god i'm brilliant let's talk about thriller by michael jackson uh to put this
[31:46]album into context i am just going to say this of all the albums we have covered this one no i know
[31:51]you cannot reference stuff that i've cut out the pen is my dear anybody i need to honor alex
[31:57]the pen is green is my dear rest in rest in peace i i love that all the pictures of like you know
[32:04]people are painting now alex trebek in heaven and he's still running a game show can you imagine if
[32:09]that's what heaven is like you just show up there and it's just your job you'd be like oh
[32:12]yeah the whole genre of memorial artwork is just it's going off like i love it with
[32:19]chad mcbozeman and rbg going around the same time that stuff has just completely gone and they're
[32:24]all playing jeopardy and it's like wait what this doesn't even make sense i just i can't get enough
[32:28]of it i think it's so great and kobe like and kobe is there like for aaron though it would be
[32:32]fantastic like he he would just show up and be like eating tacos and like an organic peanut butter for
[32:38]weeks oh yeah
[32:38]weeks right oh can you imagine when we all die ironically big bopper style and the last words
[32:45]you hear is oh no baby and then they do like a painting of us and it's doing like what we love
[32:50]and so like me it's just like me listening to me talking on the podcast like i don't know how you
[32:55]paint that but that's kind of what it is it's heaven and it's just instead of clouds it's just
[33:04]a little feet around and you see me like is this all right no it's i
[33:08]so here's the deal i want to put this album thriller into context here all you need to know
[33:14]about this album is it is an absolute juggernaut this album is by far the biggest album we've done
[33:20]yet and just like when you look at how successful this album was i i think now with music the way
[33:26]it is you know it's just people putting out one hit at a time to understand what a huge album
[33:30]this was you really have to look at these are the best first of all it's the best-selling album of
[33:36]all time and i'll get into that in a second but here are the singles released off this album you
[33:39]ready single number one the girl is mine hey my girl is mine this is the number one single because
[33:45]i'm so famous the girl is fine billy jean beat it want to be starting something human nature
[33:51]pyt thriller every single single hit the top 10 i mean if human nature is a top 10 though the
[34:00]list means nothing right every single one that is seven songs off the album that hit top 10
[34:06]top 10 there's only three other albums that have ever done that of course aaron would like human
[34:10]okay so the three other albums i'm just i'm just cruising on with my little stats here go on just
[34:17]plow through the three the three other albums to do this with seven hit singles in the top 10 off
[34:23]the same album bruce strings bruce springsteen born in the usa janet jackson's uh rhythm nation
[34:30]nation 1814 what does that janet jackson like i could probably name a couple janet jackson
[34:35]songs but that she would have seven seven hits like that you think this album missed you much
[34:41]m-i-s-u much well the problem is with that album is that we were all living in a rhythm nation we
[34:49]didn't even realize it best-selling album of all time uh right after number two acdc back in black
[34:54]meatloaf bad out of hell pink floyd and whitney houston the bodyguard i would have never guessed
[35:00]meatloaf would you guys no no no but i i who was
[35:05]buying that album i mean it's not even in the top 500 anymore he got bumped is it like a bunch of
[35:10]moms that love meatloaf because they look like what their husband looks like because that meatloaf
[35:16]album is it's right up our alley it's like a it's a pretty short album with the exception of
[35:21]paradise by the dashboard lights being a long song but that that meatloaf album goes by quick
[35:24]and it's got some jams we should do that album and then i'll come up with a uh a fake call for
[35:29]the baseball one but it's all about us again so and then and then and i think the only other thing i
[35:35]want to talk about this album is is how this started video culture you know mtv had started
[35:39]a couple years earlier but was really reticent not maybe not reticent but they weren't playing
[35:44]black artists on mtv and they said oh it's because they're not doing rock and roll they're
[35:48]not doing this or that or whatever you know their bs excuse was but all of a sudden billy jean comes
[35:52]out and that that video is so huge that they have to put into heavy rotation yes so okay so yeah
[35:58]yeah so beat it at the time was 160 000 for them to make right and it was totally like it just
[36:04]changed everything all these videos started playing over and over just to give you an idea
[36:08]the video for scream do you remember when michael jackson released scream yeah that video was four
[36:13]million dollars where he was making like i do you guys remember when black and white was released
[36:17]that was a huge deal for us i remember when they released it on fox live yes the one i remember
[36:22]that was big on fox was remember the time because magic johnson was in it arsenio hall was in it do
[36:27]you guys remember that one yeah that was all the egyptian shit right yeah absolutely the scream video
[36:34]problematic for me is that the black and white one where he's like in a alien ship is that scream
[36:39]or is that yeah he and janet are like yelling and breaking stuff and like i but i remember that well
[36:45]no that that that black and white i remember i was over at a friend's house and i realized now
[36:48]they're like my conservative friends like conservative parents and we're watching the
[36:52]black or white video and i'm like oh this is great you know i actually like the song i think the the
[36:56]morphing stuff was really cool and then there's 10 minutes of him grabbing his crotch and then
[37:02]beating the shit out of some car and then turning the car around and then he's like oh my god i'm
[37:04]turning into a leopard and i was like right at the time i was like this is very strange like i
[37:09]why is this on mainstream tv it was wild to be fair though there were there were not other
[37:14]other releases of music videos on network tv right it was just michael jackson not that i remember
[37:22]yeah i don't remember any other ones i mean that's he he's a you you forget what a juggernaut he is
[37:27]and that was the point i want to make with this whole thing i mean this this whole album is huge
[37:30]and why not let's get into it song number one
[37:34]is gonna be starting something let me move some shit around here so i can see a little bit better
[37:39]i i think this is also known as gonna be starting a terrible song for an album right
[37:44]no no wow no it's not the only song i like in the world you like it yeah
[37:50]i guys i'm i know we have tried not to argue much on this podcast but i feel an argument coming on
[37:57]today about this whole album i mean this is so good so basically his last album off the wall was not
[38:04]as successful as he went thought it because it didn't win grammy for record of the year
[38:07]and he wrote this song for latoya way better than this album
[38:11]no please don't say that stuff that's wild this is a great album you guys are all wrong
[38:17]no no i like this album but i think off the wall is a better album but i'm giving away my
[38:21]oh man i i just i love that but that that was a disco album right
[38:25]and basically there he was real depressed after that album came out and it didn't win
[38:29]grammy of the year i mean that's how like powerful michael jackson is and so this want to
[38:34]be starting something is kind of one of the few it's you know this album is really interesting
[38:37]because it's got a rock song it's got a soul song and then it's got this disco song and then it has
[38:42]a song that it just really turns me on that baby i know that girl is mine oh my god what a sexy
[38:48]song that is i mean prince take a back seat to that song for sure you know you know he he poached
[38:52]some of this from this artist named manu de bongo released this 1972 song wait who is talking is
[39:00]this aaron speaking no no this sounds like it's aaron's left field take of the week
[39:03]no this is the left field take i mean you can yeah you can hear you can definitely hear west
[39:07]african influence and rob if you can if you can jump ahead to some point in the song there's a
[39:12]point where michael jackson is doing the i'ma say mama saw mama who saw that that whole bit
[39:17]and so i just figured this like listen to this voice though
[39:23]and the horns oh my god the rhythm here is so great
[39:27]oh
[39:28]oh
[39:28]oh
[39:33]and so that that does that does bang as our as our listeners know i mean that bangs no doubt but
[39:40]no doubt he took that from this artist manu de bongo i don't know if you've got the clip of that
[39:45]one rob oh yeah funky i like this what
[39:51]see oh yeah see right yeah this is wild that michael jackson would listen to this and be like
[40:02]god damn i gotta put this in a
[40:03]disco song i'm missing out this is the easy disco i think i mean i think if we haven't even said the
[40:09]the name and russell maybe i don't want to step on your take russell you found you found the
[40:13]the gem so what else what else did you want us to know about it um just that is the name we haven't
[40:20]i like that we start and then you drop into russell's lap yeah he did suit this guy so
[40:24]this guy de bongo sued michael jackson and settled out of court for
[40:27]one million french francs one million french francs so they had a one
[40:33]million dollar franc settlement that's like two dollars and fifty cents there's another
[40:38]there's another song in the 90s like it was it heal the world or something that also got
[40:43]like the same thing it was like he ripped it off i don't know if he actually did but
[40:47]does this happen this happened at least twice now with michael does it happen more than that
[40:51]i haven't heard of i also believe rihanna sampled this song and also was part of a lawsuit with this
[40:56]oh my god i was not aware but the name we haven't said yet that we should have said at some point
[41:01]already is quincy jones yes i don't i
[41:03]i think anything we're any credit we're giving to michael in terms of
[41:06]putting the music together is a question right quincy was the real mastermind behind the album
[41:12]but i was shocked as well as rod temperton and greg filling gains and um some others um who
[41:19]who are really driving this thing so i don't think michael would have heard a 1972 release
[41:23]from africa it would have been quincy who found that stuff but i was i was shocked with how many
[41:27]songs in this album he wrote i mean it's it's about half i think they give him credit but i
[41:32]think that's big yeah i i i think that he had the clout to uh get writing credit uh and and not give
[41:40]it to other people so i think i i think it's questionable how much he actually wrote to
[41:45]aaron and matt maybe you have a better feel for this than i do but so like i've heard i know the
[41:49]name quincy jones he's kind of this jazz artist he's this producer and i kind of looked at like
[41:53]hey what is quincy jones known for and a lot of his michael jackson stuff i think there's some
[41:59]other like he worked with frank sinatra at one
[42:02]point which he's famous for but like what aaron what else is quincy jones really famous for other
[42:06]than michael jackson uh yeah i mean you you sort of nailed it i mean he um and matt you might have
[42:12]seen the netflix documentary about quincy which is i i ate it up i loved it um yeah he got his
[42:18]start i think playing trumpet in seattle he was a jazz musician and i think ran with you know miles
[42:23]and people like that and then um conducted the count bassy orchestra so he's the conductor for
[42:29]um sinatra at the sands the
[42:32]live album um my favorite work of his he did string arrangements for um the dino washington
[42:38]album for those in love which i think is wonderful uh and then he did a lot of film scores i think in
[42:43]the 70s and uh eventually did this work for michael but he's he's the mastermind behind
[42:48]off the wall and this album but so is he famous like the the name is huge is he famous for being
[42:53]part of the michael jackson albums or why is he really famous it's the it's the whole uh
[43:01]of his uh nine decade career at this point and maybe eight i think he's in his 90s so
[43:07]you know he started off in his teens as a horn player like rosie said and then you know i think
[43:13]he went over to europe for a while because he absolutely wanted to be a conductor of a big band
[43:18]uh yeah he might have studied with boulanger in france right yeah you know and so then he came
[43:22]back oh i studied with him in france french it was with french toast and i think you know this
[43:29]whole thing of uh having a lap of that a uh an african-american who was doing movie scores
[43:35]was just crazy in the i don't know it was late 60s early 70s he absolutely took over that genre i
[43:43]mean so he's just he's bounced around from um kind of artist to artist but at all times putting his
[43:50]thumbprint his handprint basically his his stamp on everything and so known for taking stuff that's
[43:59]good moving it to great and you know helping out different artists just to uh make sure that
[44:05]they're more or less attract uh attracting kind of the i don't know if it's the general the the
[44:12]masses if you will you know they're it's very commercialized everything that he does i think
[44:17]and rosie can correct me if i'm wrong but and i don't think he's aiming to do that
[44:22]but he's got that ear that um you know the masses want to hear so i don't know imagine if
[44:29]quincy jones worked with ace of base oh my god is that heaven on earth or what right right i'm
[44:35]trying to force a callback and it's i think it would have been a match made in heaven i don't
[44:40]know i mean quincy knew i don't know if he knew what he knows before i i was also going to work
[44:47]in the joke john quincy adams somehow like he was a president but i'm going to skip that so you're
[44:52]welcome that's my new goal is if jokes aren't funny enough i'm just going to tell you about
[44:57]like i've ignored it you know but like
[44:59]makes me a true hero russell have you heard of rick rubin the name i have rick rubin redid a lot
[45:04]of johnny cash's stuff on american records you know he worked with the beastie boys he's worked
[45:07]with like a ton of artists like quincy jones was rick rubin before rick rubin is rick rubin you
[45:12]know like he's got the ability to work across platforms and across different genres and um just
[45:18]more or less i think he's got an ear for what is popular music at the time understood yeah
[45:24]that makes sense and i'm not going to say that rick rubin is also type of sandwich so you
[45:28]guys are welcome for that thanks so much all right next song baby be mine still in the funk
[45:34]disco i love the hand claps for the percussion in the back
[45:36]how i mean this just jams listen to this singing
[45:44]yeah this one i mean any of the any of the tracks that lean more toward off the wall to me are what
[45:51]i really love and i'm i am i this album sent me down so many youtube rabbit holes and internet
[45:57]rabbit holes on funk guitar
[45:58]and mini moog programming and all of the sounds so which i think also speaks to
[46:04]quincy's influence that every sound on this album is on purpose and every player on here
[46:10]is an absolute pro everything is just in the pocket all the time and yeah i think one of the
[46:15]one of the songs on this album that sent aaron down a real internet rabbit video hole was the
[46:19]song titled uh mother-in-law catches catches me ernie all right so that was a good
[46:28]i like that joke all right what that's a good joke i can't just keep yelling that's a good joke
[46:35]hey can we get jenny back in the room and replace him with all right release him with rob
[46:40]stepmom stuck that's what it is it's stepmom not mother-in-law
[46:43]keep listening bernie keep downloading we love you i think i think one of the songs that sent
[46:51]aaron down a video rabbit hole is stepmom stuck all right that's one of the hit songs on this
[46:57]album if that joke wasn't clear enough
[46:58]okay so next up i nailed it the baby i love it i i and and matt i see you shaking your head during
[47:04]some of these songs what is it about this album that you dislike there is not and this this sounds
[47:10]really goofy but hear me out okay there is not there is not one note that is out of place
[47:17]throughout this whole album it is so professionally done and everything i think is geared towards what
[47:24]is going to sell the most amount of records and what is going to get the most amount of
[47:28]uh radio play that that is that is the absolute goal of this album we've heard
[47:34]lauren hill now we've heard jonie mitchell we've heard nirvana we've heard the beatles all these
[47:39]groups that just basically said screw what's popular at the time big middle fingers i'm gonna
[47:45]i'm gonna do what i want to do and and they create gold right and now i think this is kind of the
[47:52]first album that has started to flip that back we had a good 15 20 years
[47:58]of from 65 from pet sounds on through this of i'm gonna do what i want to do and now this is the
[48:04]first one that's back to oh what's gonna sell the most records and what's gonna get me that record
[48:09]of the year and this is commercial success so i i'm gonna push back on that a little bit because
[48:15]i would guess that if you gave this album to anybody and you said there's nine songs on here
[48:20]i'll give you seven guesses as to what the first single off this album was i bet you would win
[48:25]money every single time because this song is the first single and if you think they set this out to
[48:30]sell the most albums i i want you to just listen to this man oh no i mean clearly the cash grab
[48:41]this is the cash grab right here this is not the best song it's paul mccartney what i have figured
[48:45]out yeah so you put that out because you got paul mccartney's name on it right so okay let's bring
[48:49]it in all right look at this song is we can we can hear this song this is all right and then
[48:54]then you start hitting them with the song and then you start hitting them with the song and then you
[48:55]the second best song and then the first best song and then maybe you follow it up with the fourth
[48:59]best but you never put your best song out first if you're going out with radio hits because you
[49:03]want to see where you're at and if you're doing really great this song also was out so interestingly
[49:08]the single was released before the album was done so then everybody who's working on the album is
[49:13]going oh shit we got to get some jams out there because there's already a single with paul mccartney
[49:19]out leading the album so there was a lot of pressure on everybody yeah there's a lot of
[49:25]pressure on everybody yeah there's a lot of pressure on everybody yeah there's a lot of pressure on everybody
[49:26]on earth who has heard this album and thought that michael jackson and paul mccartney were actually
[49:32]fighting over some girl like can you imagine people two people with less chemistry talking
[49:37]to each other about no michael the ghost and neither one of them has a normal voice can we
[49:41]at least the girl's fine that was mine no the girl's mine we have to jump forward rob i might
[49:47]have given you that time cue but can we jump forward to where they're arguing over the girl
[49:50]because it's hilarious it's hilarious but the timing is fantastic we're not gonna fight about
[49:55]this okay paul i think i told you
[49:59]i will say paul's singing at the end of this is pretty unbelievable don't you remember oh yes
[50:07]hey aaron i'm a forever lover you know is that what you said she said i don't believe it
[50:14]i mean that's when you can hear that he's a pro he just jumps right in i think every song
[50:21]should have this at the end where they have a conversation about the song at the end of
[50:25]the song be like hey jimmy did you know there really isn't a thing called a stairway to heaven
[50:30]well i didn't know that whatever your other name is and i can't remember it right now
[50:34]robert i can't believe that that's true and then it's like a five-minute conversation and you're
[50:38]like oh wow this really makes me think hey kurt you really do smell like teen spirit oh thanks
[50:43]i think i think i think that's a good idea uh i do think that song makes you realize that
[50:52]michael jackson can sing better than paul mccartney by a factor of one thousand
[50:55]but does that was that in question was that ever in question no but i think it's fair it's it's fair
[51:01]to tee up aaron for this because you know michael jackson if you go back to like the jackson five he
[51:05]is like this big voice he's got this it's incredible right it's like aaron what do you
[51:10]think of michael jackson's voice and how like i think it's interesting to ask aaron how will you
[51:16]compare it to prince oh that's oh man that's tough because um prince is the obviously 1999 came out
[51:25]right before this
[51:25]this album and actually i was going to talk about 1999 we talked about thriller
[51:28]their voices are very different i think michael was capable of a bit more sort of um
[51:37]melodic kind of nuance um prince to me definitely had more extremes in his voice because prince
[51:47]could do the squeal and he had more i mean michael had no bass in his voice at this point in his life
[51:51]prince had bass are you not giving michael credit for the
[51:53]he he
[51:54]who
[51:55]i am i'm saying i'm giving i'm giving michael credit but at the extremes i mean when prince
[52:00]really screams and you you know like if you hear it in um i can't think of a decent well maybe he
[52:08]does it in delirious kind of at the end but uh yeah our listeners don't know any of these songs
[52:13]just make it up aaron talk about when prince make talk about when prince crushes in that song
[52:19]um yeah hot dogs in the in the metal pan listen listen our our listeners are the lowest levels of
[52:25]life on the earth okay about delirious but i got no i listened to 1999 today because i was like well
[52:32]i gotta hear another album from 1982 but now i can't remember which track i was thinking i was
[52:35]like oh that's the thing that like prince does a squeal like a little richard kind of thing that
[52:39]michael doesn't do but michael is one of the great voices of all time and there's a spot i think this
[52:45]is there's always a spot on these records where you really hear somebody let their voice go for
[52:49]the first time and on purple rain it's beautiful ones where he really lets it rip yeah and on this
[52:54]one there's a spot in the girl is mine where michael just like really lets it go and that's
[52:58]when you think like oh we're in the presence of greatness but don't you think part of it too is
[53:02]that prince is so much more believable and everything he's saying that michael jackson
[53:06]on this album like prince i really do believe that prince makes me he wants me to cream right
[53:12]he wants everyone to cream okay that's what he wants and he's he's committed to it he has set
[53:20]his life out to make people cream their jeans it's what he wants and he's committed to it
[53:24]he wants russell okay russell's giving me the one more time cream so here's the thing
[53:29]is that michael on this album we need to replace rob with his wife right on this album he is
[53:35]telling us that he is uh fighting paul mccartney for a girl don't buy it whatsoever he is scared
[53:43]because he's in a haunted house i don't even get what the fuck thriller is about hey rob this
[53:47]is mine i mean and then and then he wants to tell us that he is uh telling people to not fight in a
[53:53]gang don't buy it don't buy it don't buy it don't buy it
[53:54]that uh he's telling some girl got knocked up and it's his kid okay maybe i buy that one uh but i i
[54:01]just don't you don't you don't get any of these well not really i don't know yeah i i i just don't
[54:08]i i think prince is so much more believable to me it's all commercial hey great songs right if you
[54:13]just take listen to what they are but like yeah i'm with you so so this next song thriller i think
[54:19]is a huge touchstone in any i think people our age it's just like a huge part of your life growing up
[54:24]really interesting is when you listen to the song knowing that the chords he tried to build the
[54:27]chords up to a climax by the end of the song and that's why there's so much tension during this
[54:31]song to a what baseline there's a ton of tension in the song it's kind of builds and builds and
[54:38]builds the horns oh this baseline is done on a mini moog synthesizer i love it on youtube this
[54:47]week this is the first time i've really listened to this as a song and not as a video i've always
[54:52]thought of this as a video and not an actual song
[54:54]mm-hmm
[54:54]but the song is pretty awesome right it is but then when you look at the lyrics it's very strange
[55:00]because it's all about how scary it is outside and then the whole part is that he wants to be
[55:04]their thriller like he wants to be with them all night and be their thriller so it's a very i it's
[55:08]but even even the name thriller right like they they they wrote the song they they didn't know
[55:13]what to name the song right they had all sorts of stuff and then they finally settled on thriller
[55:18]because they thought that it had commercial they could sell merchandise around the name thriller
[55:22]and so it was all
[55:24]about commercializing the song and everything so again the music video is iconic it it it absolutely
[55:32]like springboard the whole way that uh people heard me new music and how things were put out
[55:40]into the mainstream you know and i always thought of this music as as dance music because people
[55:46]dance to it at weddings but and i always just thought of it as like music to move your butt to
[55:51]does anybody know anybody who did it ever?
[55:54]be nice to me and rob's sister like we don't have to go down that path like i know you're
[56:00]so i always just thought i know you have like a music but you don't really like hammer people on
[56:05]that that's kind of ridiculous but it turns out like this is this is total nerd music and it's
[56:11]not just nerd music but it was it's it's sort of it's taken this like the arms race that we that
[56:16]that was started uh so when when stevie wonder made songs in the key of life we talked about
[56:21]that there were there were four matt walked out matt got out of the room and i was like oh my god
[56:24]left synthesizers called the dream machine in the world and stevie had two of them oh rob that's bob
[56:32]dylan no change i thought i heard this on stevie wonder too i'm not sure i think that's wrong
[56:36]okay don't hit me with that because i read i read a passage in my book yesterday that compared stevie
[56:42]wonder and bob dylan's harmonica and i was going to bring it up on the pod and i'm not going to do
[56:46]it but i'm i'm not going to talk about haruki murakami on this pod don't make me do it
[56:50]we might need to call an emergency
[56:54]pod where we talk about how you guys keep going i gotta take a piss
[56:57]rob legit got aaron keep going rob left rob walked out keep going he got so bored he said
[57:05]fuck it i'm out this is the first time where rob has walked out of the podcast
[57:10]aaron i listened to you tell me about it
[57:14]we don't think about the fact that you you think about like okay i'm here
[57:20]sure these guys like you you know a guitar is a guitar a drum
[57:24]or drums you get you you get your instruments together you play some music you record it you
[57:28]make a song but that's a lot of what mattered was who had the equipment and that's what stevie had
[57:33]with songs in the key of life and there's a story it's not it's not clear to me if it's true or not
[57:38]but there's it might be apocryphal but there's a story i haven't got there yet just so you know
[57:41]i was gonna say him saying like i'm not even gonna talk about her murky curry is like me saying no i'm
[57:47]not gonna tell that joke but it was a good one like he's bragging that he knows that he just
[57:50]doesn't want to go into rob you went to the bathroom and aaron just read like two chapters
[57:53]of kirkegaard or something like that and he's like i'm not gonna tell that joke but it was a good
[57:54]he said here i'll i'll quote i'll tell you what he said he said you know drums are drums and
[58:00]guitars are guitars and now here we are okay sorry there's a story that that during the
[58:07]recording of thriller someone played tapes of prince's 1999 for michael jackson and i don't
[58:15]know if that's true because they were only released about a month apart so i don't know
[58:19]it would have to be some like subterfuge kind of thing but michael heard those synths and he was
[58:24]like i gotta have that that's the sound that i need and so it was this you know escalating you
[58:29]had to have the right equipment because at the time technology was also changing rapidly at the
[58:33]time too so a synthesizer that would have taken up a whole room in 1975 now fit inside a studio
[58:40]but they still weren't being mass produced and people didn't know how to use them necessarily
[58:44]so um that's a lot to me about how the sound of this of this song came about was that there was
[58:49]this escalating you know who had the best equipment who could play it who could program it
[58:54]and um i don't know if it's true or not but but people say that that michael heard prince's synths
[59:00]from 1999 and was like i gotta have that sound for thriller i guarantee that that synthesizer
[59:04]would take up less room than my elliptical that doesn't work in my living room
[59:08]michael jackson saw prince working on an elliptical he's like i need to have that elliptical look at
[59:17]that butt look two little eggs back there uh okay so listen the difference i think that we can agree
[59:23]the main difference between the two is that the synths are not the same thing they're not the
[59:24]same thing that's the only difference between prince and michael jackson is that michael jackson was singing beat it about beating a gang and prince wanted to beat it at a gang bang come on it was a good one it's right there keep going
[59:35]yeah this song is definitely about his disdain for violence and running away from a fight definitely
[59:44]about that that's pretty sure one thousand percent couldn't be about anything else we've talked about
[59:51]this before rob isn't the the van halen the
[59:54]the guitar solo on this song yep
[59:57]with the background music it sounds so much better
[60:02]i mean this think about compare this song to the songs we've listened to so far
[60:11]it's gone from disco to whatever that paul mccartney one was
[60:15]to and now this is just a straight up rock song it's crazy i would say that was two
[60:20]buddies fighting over a woman that was the that was the the second part of the genre last song
[60:24]yeah but it is the uh the gangster story about eddie van halen in that one right is that he just
[60:29]he came in played it like one or two takes and just left and said no no i don't need don't pay
[60:36]me for it whatever i just did it and it turned out to be like one of the best-selling albums of all
[60:42]time and the best selling hits of all time and he's got the guitar solo and he never gets paid
[60:47]for it because he just said no no i'm good listen if not getting paid for something makes you
[60:51]gangster guys i got news for you we're all in a gang and i can already see that matt's wearing a
[60:57]red leather jacket that he just showed us from the thriller video so he has fallen into this
[61:00]trap of selling merchandise matt you gotta keep those hand signals down during the podcast we
[61:05]can't see just keep like a hand signals i know it works for you and your gang yeah you gotta relax
[61:10]yeah matt's just putting up the big thumbs down in his gang to show that he doesn't like other gangs
[61:15]all right uh next song you know what guys you know i had a friend named william and he left some pants
[61:21]and i had to call him and say hey billy jeans
[61:23]start this podcast over no don't thumbs down me matt for that come on that's not don't do that
[61:32]it's hurtful you know i you gotta call a spade a spade it would be hard to argue that thriller
[61:39]leading into beat it and billy jean is not the the best three song stretch on any album ever
[61:45]how do you beat those three songs it's amazing what is uh metallica's metallic uh
[61:51]ride the lightning is that their first no no i'm a metallica fan nothing rivals this these are the
[61:56]best three songs that are on any album ever this song was number one for nine weeks almost almost
[62:02]a fifth of the year and when apparently when they first brought in quincy jones is rumored to have
[62:06]hated the bass line he of course denies that now and he hated that it was a 29 second intro to the
[62:11]song and this like i said earlier this was the first video where he was it was put into heavy
[62:15]rotation on mtv so it's a really a song i would also hate the bass line if i stole it from hall of
[62:21]notes if you guys oh rob if if you can pull up oh that's number three that he's stolen though so
[62:27]why would you why would you hate it if you stole it it doesn't make any sense i can't go for that
[62:31]by hall of notes supposedly uh one of the holler oats one of these dudes admitted said that michael
[62:37]jackson said he stole from this listen to this that is the line this is it
[62:42]yes you hear it yeah that's basically it yeah so supposedly michael jackson told
[62:51]hall or oats or whoever the hell else was in this band i think it's just one guy named holland oats
[62:56]yeah it's like call and it's it's whatever air needs for breakfast in the morning oh it's still
[63:01]cut oats well i can tell you when he tried to steal that bass line they were like well i can't
[63:06]go for that uh don't don't mean that joke but what do you guys think like if you if you tee up
[63:13]thriller beat it billy jean it is hard to beat those three songs in a row right okay well how
[63:19]about this russell
[63:21]no what if i say human nature pyt and the lady of my life those are three pretty good songs
[63:27]i will say russell we had this discussion over text a little bit the thing that gives me pause
[63:33]is that thriller is the end of side one and billy jean is the beginning of side two so if you're
[63:39]listening on vinyl it's it's you don't get the same like murderers row feeling because you got
[63:45]to get up and change the record our listeners don't have record players rob doesn't even have
[63:49]a record player he's the host so that's a good thing i don't know if you guys have any questions
[63:51]about that i don't know if you guys have any questions about that i don't know if you guys have
[63:51]any questions about that i don't know if you guys have any questions about that i don't know if you guys
[63:51]don't know if you guys have any questions about that i don't know if you guys have any questions
[63:51]so that doesn't matter yeah through my phone speakers this all sounded great to me i loved it
[63:56]nice job quincy putting all that time in aaron i got this thing on the sonos you should try it
[64:01]sometime yeah it's advanced technology all right uh human nature this was written uh the guys who
[64:10]performed on this were in the band toto this is this voice though toto cover that uh weezer song
[64:20]i gotta tell you this this was like our fourth album in a row no i shouldn't say that because
[64:24]lauren hill i understood i could not understand a damn thing he's saying on that like if you asked
[64:29]me to say like two words he said in that what's he saying when he's like nice nice i mean what
[64:33]is he why there's a song where he says where he says that first song where he's like you're a
[64:38]vegetable you're a vegetable i was like what is he saying he does say no he says you're a vegetable
[64:43]that you want to be starting something he really does say you're a vegetable yeah see you understood
[64:48]it about his that song is apparently about his brother's wives i should have brought this up
[64:52]earlier but he wrote a song about his brother's wives starting stuff um but that's that moment
[64:58]has passed i shouldn't have brought that up i like human nature because okay aaron tell us about
[65:03]your brother's wife we know you want to hear you know you want to say something about it let's go
[65:07]oh my man my brother's wife is totally cool i have nothing to say
[65:11]you're on camera he's holding up a thumbs down i don't know why that's okay jokes to
[65:17]make no jokes to make there rob rob stop putting your thumbs down that's wildly inappropriate we're
[65:25]talking about aaron's wife aaron's brother's wife all right the next song okay i am going to say
[65:32]this i love the song pyt yet another song as a teacher i cannot play at school and i have to
[65:38]make sure it's not on any playlist if it comes up i am in huge trouble but i do want to say that he
[65:43]just says pyt like it's something that everyone says there's there's
[65:47]has anyone ever used the term pretty young thing or pyt for short no way you would not have a job
[65:53]this is the first if you use that now you would not have a job oh no it doesn't even matter what
[65:58]you're talking about right you could be talking about a tree right rob rob hit play rob just hit
[66:03]play just play the song god dang it's a good song though it's another great bass line excellent keys
[66:10]i can't decide i go back and forth all week long is this a great keyboard album is it a great guitar
[66:15]album because i'm it's taryn aaron
[66:17]up inside david williams playing on here but the keys are great too so aaron sometimes like i know
[66:24]you're like educated in music but sometimes you don't think outside the box part of what makes
[66:29]this song amazing is there's a couple things the first is i agree with ross you're dumb as shit
[66:33]there are backup singers on this song and one of them when i was looking at genius.com at the
[66:39]lyrics one of the one of the backup singers was listed as mindy cohen who was natalie green on
[66:46]the facts of life
[66:47]and natalie green on the facts of life later went on to say i sang backup vocals
[66:52]on this song so maybe we need to play up the the facts of life song
[66:57]facts of life this is one of the main actresses in this show saying backup vocals
[67:06]like this is right up rob's blossom road you gotta admit tv shows don't have theme songs like
[67:17]that anymore like that is a jam and theme song it's a banger but but beyond singing backup did
[67:22]you know that that mindy cohen aka natalie as she went on the facts of life of course was playing
[67:29]not tootie not joe she was playing claps and and when we start our podcasts every night we do a
[67:35]clap and so if you listen to pyt there's this there's this part where the the beat is really
[67:40]being conducted by a clap it's not a drum it's claps so what i wanted to do tonight is give you
[67:45]guys the best five songs
[67:47]ever where claps are featured as part of the song
[67:50]we need to cut this whole part out no aaron's thinking about that time in college where he
[68:05]got the clap he's confused by this whole thing so this this was a really difficult decision and i
[68:13]had to cut a lot of things out so there were certain things that cut out don't apologize russ
[68:16]ever if if there is a band that is on the top 500 lists i've cut them out of the greatest songs
[68:22]with claps ever wow so that means the cars where they they're um best friends girl is out
[68:28]steve miller band take the money and run where it's yeah of course that is out yeah
[68:34]celia by simon and garfunkel out so those songs are out also if it mentions claps in the song
[68:43]title it is out that means fits in the tantrums
[68:46]handclap out yeah i can hear your hand clap back clap hands out so here we go here are the five
[68:54]greatest songs that feature claps as part of the music the first one is and i feel like aaron's
[68:59]gonna like yell at me right now but i gotta go black eyed peas pumping
[69:03]i should know what that sample is with the
[69:15]it's in pulp fiction but i don't know the name of the song
[69:18]oh yeah what is that song this is pretty fun do they rap on that song or is it just a dance
[69:25]there is a rap later on but yeah there's a clap really featured at the beginning so number two
[69:33]on the list i like that as is a relatively newer one it's florence and the machine dog days are
[69:39]over let's see if you know this one oh jeez i'm gonna go flip over a car holy shit this is such a
[69:44]good song eric focus on the clap oh my god clap that clap to this song my friends you know who's
[69:51]underrated the machine
[69:54]i did it florence for about a year i did it with the machine for like two years it was fantastic
[70:03]the third song on the list is thurston harris and the sharps little bitty pretty one what see if you
[70:13]know this one
[70:13]oh
[70:14]oh listen to this clap yeah yeah uh huey louis covered this too but i like this one
[70:20]you how can you not clap with this song
[70:23]it's true it's it makes me i'm trying to sing along that's i don't want to force that on you
[70:29]guys you can sing no not doing it the fourth one number two on the list so this is the second
[70:38]greatest song ever with claps as far as i'm concerned it's stealer's wheel stuck in the
[70:43]middle with you this is the second greatest song ever with claps as far as i'm concerned
[70:44]this is right out of that movie reservoir dogs otherwise known as otherwise known as uh a band
[70:50]song i thought was by bob dylan until i was like 35 years old
[70:53]you're telling me matt couldn't cut someone's ear off to this song
[71:06]he easily could also those claps those claps are really subtle that's oh that's nice okay and the
[71:13]last one the number one song of all time that features claps and this is going to be a little
[71:18]off the wall i feel like aaron might like this one we got missy elliott bomb intro past the dutch
[71:25]holy shit yeah whoa listen carefully now listen listen
[71:31]are you referencing the out the window to that airplane joke i made earlier
[71:43]and can't edit out so you have this song about claps and she specifically references michael
[71:49]jackson holding that baby out the window give me props for that one that's pretty good that's
[71:54]incredible also i wouldn't even try to embarrass myself by trying to clap along with that because
[71:59]it's a really complicated rhythm that's fantastic no that song makes me want to clap my clap my
[72:03]cheeks every week oh you want to clap yeah pop the clap oh no i don't know i mean i think that's
[72:13]the thing that people do i don't know i think that's the thing people do i'm gonna i'm gonna
[72:19]trigger the bleep joke yeah there we go perfect russell and i would say that any list that has
[72:26]missy misdemeanor elliott in it is a phenomenal list so congratulations that was one hell of a
[72:32]list i gotta say she specifically referenced michael jackson right the hee hee right excellent
[72:38]excellent rob can you at least try to do the hee hee once before this thing is out
[72:42]oh there we go there it is there we've been waiting the whole episode when he's saying
[72:48]shamone what is he saying that's something i've always wondered i thought for a while he was
[72:51]saying like the whale at sea world but i wasn't sure what he's talking about when he says shamone
[72:55]yeah that's a mystery to me okay well okay i thought maybe we had maybe riff on that
[73:02]if only we had uh no that's fine look this stuff up i feel like teen wolf shooting a
[73:07]shot and aaron just rejected me so that's no big deal uh now we have michael j5
[73:12]say i'm rejecting anyone to close out to close out this album i mean i guess aaron bairns maybe
[73:18]i've played basketball with aaron he's a lot of mid-range jumpers i could see why like michael
[73:22]jackson or michael michael j fox on a t-wolf serum could potentially block aaron shot
[73:28]potentially i don't think it's a guarantee but i think it's a guarantee as i get older
[73:34]my balls are starting to look more and more like teen wolf all right so
[73:37]wait i can't say
[73:40]this is a family friendly event i think if there was a movie about that though it'd be called low
[73:47]t-wolf all right so let's how am i gonna edit that together where i can okay so mother-in-law
[73:54]listening all right here we go the lady in my life to finish the album here we go it's just
[74:00]like guys you know when you ride a great roller coaster you're going up you're going down ready
[74:04]to make your loop to loop you're going around you're just having a great time in that roller
[74:08]coaster and then there's that last 10 minutes of the album and then you're like oh my god i'm so
[74:10]excited to get off the roller coaster and then you're like oh my god i'm so excited to get off
[74:10]where you slowly go to the place where you have to get off and you just slowly slow down and you
[74:15]realize like oh this really sucks well here's the lady in my life aka the terrible ending to an album
[74:22]right you know i read on wikipedia that most people think the girl is mine is the worst song
[74:27]in this album i don't even think it's close it's the lady in my life yeah it's interesting he's
[74:32]following the same uh formula as he did on off the wall which close i think closes with she's
[74:38]out of my life right or is that second to last but uh i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't
[74:40]know i think this song sucks and oh i think it's a terrible song it's a crappy way to end the album
[74:48]aaron's just delivering the pro for fall direct right now it's a hoover sure does suck i'm gonna
[74:55]clip aaron saying that song sucks and i'm gonna play it like after every miles davis song we talk
[74:59]about doesn't make him look like a real asshole oh here's aretha franklin saying singing respect
[75:06]that song sucks
[75:07]i did
[75:10]such a strange choice to end the album and i thought there must be a better way to end the
[75:17]album so i scanned through uh several album closers from our namesake and i came up with
[75:24]two that i think were better than this so rob if you wouldn't mind doing the honors
[75:28]maybe starting with the track dreams off of vex colors album in 2000
[75:40]oh yeah this is way better closer
[75:48]not only is this the album closer this is not mariano riviera coming in i'd say it's like
[75:54]trevor hoffman coming into close no this is like a one that song was also featured
[75:59]on fifa 16 what else you got and then i thought okay well maybe that's not fair maybe it's not
[76:07]fair maybe you maybe you're into down tempo closers so then i i found it out and i'm like
[76:10]everlasting nothing off of beck's 2019 album hyperspace just to let anybody know if they come
[76:16]up to me and say you know actually i'm more into down tempo closers i will kick your ass
[76:19]all right why would you have that thought in your head you'd have to be a real psychopath to have
[76:24]some preference like that
[76:25]what do you think a good closing song on an album needs
[76:35]i mean are you down with like a closing song that's like purple rain
[76:40]or are you down with it's just it's hard to argue it's hard to argue that last song aaron just
[76:46]called up isn't better than the lady is mine or whatever it was i like i think every song we've
[76:51]ever played is i like yeah i like i like a good i mean i like a good kind of down tempo hey we're
[76:57]coasting off okay i'm kicking your ass no i like it it's great i mean i thought that what the second
[77:03]song you played there was great that was what do you guys think like i know this is hard to like do
[77:08]callbacks but what do you think is the best closing song on an album
[77:10]so like i think one of them is what's the beatles song at the end of sergeant peppers that one is
[77:15]fantastic yeah day in the life and then and then you also have purple rain is a closing song you
[77:21]know what i was thinking of actually is is i don't think it's better than purple rain i think that's
[77:24]a killer and that's one like i guess i guess man is right like it is a down tempo a little bit more
[77:29]so maybe i should kick my own ass okay it's a lesson yeah i kind of kicked along the way is
[77:35]the real lesson here letting us kind of wind down into the into the finish i just think the lady in
[77:40]so i say when when closing an album with a down tempo jam i have to say beck did it better hey rob
[77:46]what would you say did it better rob do it right rob do it right beck did it better but i'm gonna
[77:52]say okay if you're not some fucking nerd and you don't want some down tempo song train in vain
[77:57]great closing song off of oh wow wow although technically it was an extra track that was put
[78:04]on later so maybe not a closing song but okay so that is it what a bummer we're waiting in hell but
[78:10]so so whatever let me just end it no stop bring out your trombone rosie we just ended that album
[78:17]with beck did it better in closing albums like that that's the whole point of the podcast and
[78:22]aaron just proved it yeah well you know as you know i think for us like we don't understand what
[78:27]it's like to not close on a high note so true couldn't be us couldn't be us and with that in
[78:34]mind let's go to everybody's favorite segment it's time for the final ratings five five final
[78:40]ratings the question is is this album this is number 12 on the list we skipped 11 because it
[78:47]was revolver and we've already covered it and how much we love the song tax man so this is 12 on the
[78:52]list is it rolling well toned did it get rolling boned or is this album a rolling groan russell
[78:59]what do you think my my thoughts on this one there was someone who once said there's a theory
[79:06]thriller is the best selling record ever because it's the best record
[79:10]ever and i think to some extent you have to give it credit for that like
[79:15]like i know like music diehards don't want to give commercial success the credit it deserves but
[79:22]if it's the best selling record ever it has to be up here on the list right and so for me when i was
[79:28]listening to this what stood out to me is i think the highs on this this album are as high as it
[79:34]gets to me if you pull off thriller beat it and billy jean in a row that's like as good as you can
[79:40]get on an album but i think a lot of the other songs in this album are not that great and so
[79:46]i would say this is like the gail sayers of albums where he came out and he just like crushed it for
[79:51]like five years and the rest of it kind of was nothing he retired early so i'm gonna say this
[79:57]is kind of rolling groan i think it's too high on the list because i think there's only three good
[80:02]songs wow matt what do you think oh okay i'm gonna try to keep this very succinct and
[80:10]which means it's not going to be uh personally i i just do not like the album it doesn't i i could
[80:17]not wait i got two new pearl jam albums i got a marshall tucker band uh vinyl in the mail i believe
[80:25]it's the marshall the marshall tucker band album in the mail today steve miller band you know and
[80:30]so i i could not wait to get done with this album so i could put those ones on it's just it doesn't
[80:35]it doesn't speak to me and that's not to say russell brought up a great point i think the
[80:40]list absolutely if you are the number one album selling album of all time that says something
[80:46]whether you like an album or not i mean it's popular people like it that being said i think
[80:51]they made uh 30 to 35 tracks to try to cut it down to what they've got on this album which is
[80:58]13 10 13 12 i don't know how many tracks are on this album but i think just eight it's another
[81:04]short one is it okay so i mean but they recorded i believe it's i believe it's number nine number
[81:10]nine but they recorded the whole thing was meant to put out a commercially successful album
[81:16]they absolutely nailed that it just doesn't speak to me i i i don't like it it's not to my taste so
[81:23]for me it's rolling grown there's a lot of better albums out there it's hard to argue with the
[81:29]success of the album so i'm not gonna it's not rolling well grown it's not like way up the list
[81:36]i just think there's a lot better albums out there and that this is just
[81:40]it's just too commercialized for me matt can i ask you one question before we go to aaron
[81:45]to me it's easy to link this with purple rain it's like similar time frame like what what would
[81:52]you pick purple rain or this album purple rain 100 out of 100 times i feel like i feel like prince
[81:59]you actually felt like prince was singing the songs and like they were his songs and he owned
[82:07]and you know he put every ounce of creative
[82:10]genius he's got into him i just felt like these like i was surprised like rob uh michael jackson
[82:17]got credited with four um writing credits on this album like i would have i would have thought he
[82:22]just kind of came into the came into the studio and just said yep i don't know that that'll sell
[82:27]some albums i'll go with this one you know but i but going from lauren hill where she just poured
[82:34]out every ounce of creativity she's got you know it's all those feelings matt feelings
[82:40]i don't know what those are you're gonna have to explain that to me offline we'll get we'll get
[82:46]there by 500 yeah you know and to go to this which is so commercialized it it's completely
[82:52]night and day to me personally and so yeah i'd take prince 100 out of 100 aaron what do you think
[82:59]uh yeah so i i really had fun listening to this album it's uh one that i've
[83:04]i didn't even remember that i owned on uh vinyl so i've had fun listening to it
[83:10]i i think russell and matt both put it better than i will i i don't disagree with matt that
[83:16]the the polish on this record um means that it's something that i won't probably return to very
[83:22]frequently however um as a record to study over the last couple of weeks it's been just really
[83:29]eye-opening to really listen to what a team of great musicians great producers and a and a great
[83:35]artist can can do together and so they got so close to perfection on so many tracks that
[83:40]um i really respect it and enjoyed it uh but i will say i'm gonna i'm gonna say it's not the
[83:46]best album of 1982 in my mind that was 1999 it's not my favorite michael jackson album which is
[83:52]off the wall so i'll have to give it uh a rolling groan i'll tell you what you know i i do listen to
[83:58]a team of great artists and creative minds and whatever else shit rosie said every time i edit
[84:03]this podcast i believe their names are jenny sarah and yeah that's right so i will say this
[84:10]this album set the record for me getting caught dancing at my desk listening to it while i was
[84:14]grading papers or whatever i was getting down with this album i thought it was just so fun
[84:18]it was just great to listen i mean it's so clean the voice is so strong and the beats
[84:22]i don't think you can express how strong the rhythm and how funky this album is i just i
[84:28]loved every minute of it and that's why i'm giving it a rolling shammo uh and again we don't know
[84:33]what that means but what a brilliant ending that is it for back to the better by the way next week
[84:40]we will see you we are going to talk about aretha franklin i've never loved a man the way i love
[84:45]you are they gonna see us yes
[84:48]when you want to hear about it's a webcam show i've made some extra money the only deal is we
[84:56]have to point the cameras at our feet the whole time
[84:58]when i say we make money that means we have to pay money actually so
[85:05]it's not not for you jack
[85:10]beck did it better
[85:12]the foulest stench is in the air the funk of 40,000
[85:20]milk chocolate coffees
