Van Morrison: Moondance (1970)
[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by
[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the order
[00:08]and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research
[00:13]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy the back did it better
[00:20]we are all the way up to album 120 so think about album 12 think about album 12 okay and i think it
[00:30]was like nirvana or something we're like oh this is fun we've done it 10 times more since then guys
[00:34]that's some simple math i just did that in my head jackson thriller oh that's all on the list i guess
[00:40]yeah our list was a little off but as we've discussed i was definitely dumped about two
[00:44]weeks after we recorded that when it was released oh vincent don't laugh at that that's terrible
[00:49]you'll have a rose
[00:50]you'll have a rose
[00:50]let's do uh we are up to one and we are up to album 120 and from 1970 it's van morrison with
[00:58]his second album on the list moon dance and you know guys growing up van morrison van morrison
[01:05]was actually big in my house it was like too big we eventually ended up getting with a minivan
[01:09]morrison uh it had it only had three doors you had to go in from the side i never understood that
[01:15]like i remember when they came out with a minivan they had doors on both sides i was like
[01:18]wait what the fuck you could just do
[01:20]that like i thought it was illegal to have doors on both sides of a minivan then it's just on both
[01:23]sides you're like oh that makes way more sense that's a better idea yeah why why do you doctor
[01:28]my family may or may not have bought our minivan for the sole reason that there's two doors that
[01:34]just slide out and you don't have kids that are swinging doors open and knocking things that may
[01:39]be the only reason i mean there's obvious worries but well that might have been the main reason that
[01:43]our family went out and bought a minivan is the other reason because you can put a disco ball in
[01:47]there oh you can if you're a car fan you can put a disco ball in there you can if you're a car fan
[01:50]you want to just hang out there maybe your roommate's sick of getting kicked out all the
[01:53]time because you're getting so much action uh so listen guys uh let's get into it let's go i
[02:02]actually i don't have a recording from k-rob this week i let you guys down i have to admit it's my
[02:07]bad but i did i did end up going to uh this club in vegas i don't know if you guys have heard about
[02:15]it uh and the name is escaping me now wait wait what's going on here i don't know what's going on
[02:20]what is the name again you guys remember super freeko super freeko of course i went to the club
[02:25]super freeko and i just want to say i had my recorder on i always like to record stuff uh
[02:29]when i'm at a club i sometimes just surreptitiously put a camera like on my shoe or whatever and walk
[02:33]around but here's the thing i got this i got this audio recording uh and so let's just listen to it
[02:38]real quick see what you guys think what's up everybody welcome to super freeko we've got
[02:45]russell to the stage russell quit your grinning and drop your linen russell
[02:49]oh
[02:50]yeah very jazzy well russell is in las vegas yes and he's not hanging out with the guys
[03:00]doesn't want to do anything salacious but his traveling companion he wants to surprise
[03:07]so he goes to the bar with the gambler the place was called super freeko
[03:14]yep a contortionist god on the table russ and his friends both
[03:20]got an eiffel there was a sexy nurse who started to prance
[03:28]but then russell was shocked when they offered a lap dance in terms of russell went to a place
[03:40]where they danced in the buff when they all got naked and had implants he knew it was a strip club
[03:50]you know what i mean it was a strip club you know what i mean it was a strip club you know what i mean
[03:50]it wasn't a strip show that it was classy and kind of an art but when he stood up but to go
[04:01]i guess all that class well it made him real hard if you go out to a bar and the women are all
[04:10]getting nude you can say it was really tasteful but i know you didn't just go for the food
[04:18]it was a
[04:20]it was a
[04:20]sick crime a date
[04:22]but i think next time rob should also get to go
[04:32]ladies dan next time he's out there he'll bring his date out to the bunny ranch
[04:47]when you want to hear about the
[04:50]greatest albums of all time
[04:52]my wife heard me singing that without the backing track and she goes that wasn't very good
[04:56]well thank you for your continued support i appreciate it
[04:59]i'm always impressed i do i i think i would like to see those on youtube though i think we need to
[05:06]see this that's the one part of the show that needs rubs rubs better just parody songs they're
[05:12]like representation oh yes i love this song about this guy named russell going to a bar named super
[05:15]freako it makes perfect sense to me yeah people listen to weirder stuff i'm convinced this podcast
[05:20]is intentionally obtuse like we we do not want new people to start listening at all uh actually i put
[05:25]up an ad for one i said hey this is a cure episode really good somebody wrote on there did not like
[05:30]all these guys's small talk and i was like well first of all it's my podcast didn't i make that
[05:34]clear like don't say that to me second of all what are you talking about there's not that much
[05:38]it's only the first hour uh listen we've got four guys here to discuss van morrison and moon dance
[05:44]uh and i've got russell in minnesota russell how are you doing guys quick advice has your foghorn
[05:51]ever blown before your partner was coming home no come on and when that happens technically
[05:55]does that count as a moon dance a fantabulous night of romance
[05:59]why does why does our bedroom smell like mulch
[06:04]you do the fake like you just woke up oh my god oh what are you doing here
[06:10]and now that i have kids you realize like you realize like
[06:14]oh my parents busted me so many times because i'm like like my kids will lie to me and i'm like oh
[06:19]no you're wait what oh what happened oh i uh i forgot oh you're terrible you're terrible at this
[06:25]uh i got matt minneapolis matt how are you doing tonight i'm doing great rob ready
[06:30]for van morrison to rock your gypsy souls i'm ready to listen a little moon dance this album
[06:36]this was so good i gotta say russell thank you so much though for calling it a foghorn i do
[06:39]appreciate that it's uh i'm trying to think of a small horn
[06:44]it's like the opposite of custer little little horn
[06:51]i got aaron out in california aaron aaron just was talking about how he built a uh a modest lake
[06:58]in his backyard a modest lake yeah he said he built a koi pond koi pond
[07:04]pretty salacious hey it's a marvelous night for a podcast let's talk about van morrison
[07:15]nice shit that was better than my song god damn it i'm not really mad listen for you guys listen
[07:20]this is going to be i just want to announce right now we need to work at this this is going to be a
[07:23]clean episode okay this is going to be a clean episode yeah so you know what kind of voicemail
[07:28]is coming up when i make a statement like that it's probably about venus
[07:34]i heard the rod stewart drummer but i heard it differently i heard it was one of the new kids
[07:42]on the block who had to have his stomach pumped due to too much salmon my recollection is that
[07:47]it was whatever walbert was in the grow okay so first of all okay what the fuck do they not have
[07:54]a clip of joe buck saying semen that they can pull that noise that works from like salmon i
[07:58]i think we should call it seven it sounds more medical um yeah i don't uh so first of all when
[08:04]you say that you've heard the rod stewart rumor now of course i mentioned that rod stewart uh the
[08:08]rumor was that he had to have his stomach pumped because of a bunch of sailors and i said please
[08:13]call in we got so many calls okay i don't want to play the other ones because that was actually the
[08:16]least explicit one what's that a dozen oh dozens for sure yeah oh easily bakers and bakers of
[08:23]dozens i will say though that when you say i've heard the rod stewart rumor but it was about uh
[08:28]the walberg guy that is not hearing the rod stewart rumor like that isn't that is a different
[08:34]rumor and apply it to whoever you want and say oh yeah i heard that rumor so uh it was nice but i
[08:39]actually i i did some research on this uh not on a work computer i was typing away i was like rod
[08:44]stewart salmon rumor what's going on with this thing and katie couric actually asked him about
[08:49]it on a show yes on a talk show katie couric goes hey whoa you know that rumor and he's like
[08:55]the salmon one and he said yeah i had a publicist who or a manager that i fired and so he just
[09:04]literally just kept with me my entire life he's like it he's like and he said i'm as heterosexual
[09:09]as they come which makes me suspicious that he that rumor is actually true when you say stuff
[09:13]like that but uh i heard that i heard the rod stewart rumor but it was about halloween candy
[09:17]this year it was like parents are horrified to find what's inside their kids halloween candy
[09:21]what i was putting so many needles inside the halloween candy we were giving out
[09:25]just there's semen and all this rainbow fentanyl that they're handing out it's terrible
[09:30]whatever happened to this good old-fashioned razor blades right
[09:34]can you imagine checking your kid's candy no i check it by eating it yeah like oh no that one
[09:41]was i'm gonna sit down and look at all his candy so you're smashing like you take it three musketeers
[09:45]right you smash it up and you go up no needle and then you give to your kid you're like okay here
[09:49]it's like it's kind of like the baby bird style of eating right where you take it all you chew it
[09:53]then you spit it out and the kid gets to eat it and if you if you did find a needle in one it's
[09:58]not like you're gonna toss the whole rest of the rest of the case over it right you found a needle
[10:04]no you're good if yeah if anything you're done checking like there's no way that you're gonna
[10:08]find multiple needles in your kid's halloween candy please and plus i gotta say if my kid was
[10:13]like i think i ate a needle i'd be like that actually makes sense knowing you and all the
[10:16]stuff you've done like this is the same kid who got like a toy car immediately put it in her hair
[10:21]and ran the wheels and like it sucked up all her hair that's not good at all no no you just have
[10:26]to cut it out i don't know i mean does anybody actually man did you ever check your kid's candy
[10:30]like was that ever a thought in your head no what no
[10:34]come on russell that's like that's like the same thing like yeah there's kids that have uh
[10:39]they dress up like cats and they've got litter boxes in the bathroom it's the same damn thing
[10:45]like nobody does that it's i've been checking the candy twice a day i eat one snickers in
[10:50]the morning and one milky way at night and that's it that's my check this is a weird this is so
[10:56]weird you guys bring this up because in my bathroom litter box i saw a big three musketeers
[10:59]today with a syringe yeah but there i tried it out there's no needle in it
[11:04]so so is this like a stunt parents have been pulling forever where you lie about the potential
[11:09]of razor blades or needles or drugs in the candy just so you can eat like a mini snickers bar
[11:15]yeah yeah oh i got a friend i got a friend who did one better wallace has a classmate who has
[11:19]like a legitimate peanut allergy and so her dad was like oh yeah tonight more stuff's gonna have
[11:24]nuts in it than it usually would he's just he's like i'm just gonna tell her like oh no that one's
[11:28]got nuts you can't eat that that one's mine oh that's just cruel no you gotta let you gotta let
[11:33]what do what i did with my kids which is let them eat anything they want and then they get
[11:36]extraordinarily sick multiple days in a row like they ate candy till they were sick multiple days
[11:41]and like the third day i was like you really don't get what's going on here like i told you
[11:45]do not eat so much candy they're like oh i can't understand why i'm sick i'm like hmm it's so weird
[11:51]that you're related to me it's weird they talk like eddie vetter too that's so strange me a guy
[11:56]who is famously
[11:56]you
[11:57]you
[12:02]have to say i got a three musketeer
[12:06]can't find a butterfinger those were some great nonsense syllables matt wait i gotta go work on a
[12:15]new parody song before listen i um my kid getting sick for the third time and then she looks at the
[12:22]digital picture frame and it's that picture of me at that bachelor party drinking the whiskey and
[12:26]then throwing up and then drinking more whiskey and throwing up and then drinking more whiskey
[12:29]until i don't throw up she's like and i'm like hmm that's so weird that my kids like this it's so
[12:34]strange listen guys we don't have time to talk about that was an impressive rally rub let's get
[12:38]into rolling going yeah my kid thoughts with you you're so cool dad it's time to see what everybody's
[12:44]up to it's time for rolling going how's it going uh rolling going rosie how's it going with you
[12:53]it's going great i almost missed the show tonight because right before
[12:57]we got on i found an article that was a deep dive into bass clarinet samples and hip-hop this is by
[13:04]chris oh no missing the show not bad anything but bad i so i almost didn't make i was like guys i
[13:11]can't i've got a i i can't do this i need to be you know deep dive clarinet bass clarinet so
[13:18]what's one song okay give me a song now now i have to say i don't know yet because i got on the
[13:22]podcast i don't know the woman i did so your deep dive involved not doing anything that is a deep
[13:27]dive so you got through the first paragraph yeah it involved stopping the deep dive so that i could
[13:32]join you guys on this how many times are you gonna say deep anything around rob you guys know i
[13:37]warned rob about his phrase deep whatever last time but now you just keep baiting him here but
[13:43]no because like this this guy's whole thing was like well i thought i would have found a lot more
[13:46]bass clarinet samples and then they're actually hard to find and i happen to i happen to love
[13:51]the bass clarinet i love uh eric dolphy um my favorite bass clarinet song of the year is the
[13:57]all-time as eric dolphy's it's magic off of his far cry album with booker little uh love that one
[14:03]um i think is it about this try wow by post malone that's somebody the kids listen to i guess i got
[14:09]some bass clarinet on there well it says let's see i hope right now that man is just reading
[14:14]the article aaron was gonna read and listing off the songs oh yeah is that a bass clarinet
[14:20]oh yeah it could be
[14:23]i was feeling unforgiving
[14:25]when i show up got a lot of fun
[14:27]can you explain to me post malone
[14:34]i don't he is unbelievably talented he started out as like a rock musician
[14:40]turned into this guy who's got face tattoos but then have you seen like all these covers he did
[14:45]like for charity during covet he just did nothing but nirvana covers him travis barker and some
[14:51]other guy and it was the greatest thing in the world it was unbelievable yeah i always thought
[14:56]he was more effective running the show than he was running the show than he was running the show
[14:57]the wing or shooting jumpers from the elbow yeah the mailman and don't look into what he's been up
[15:02]to lately it hasn't been that good yeah since stockton left him he's kind of mid post malone
[15:08]so yeah i was i was hopeful to find some uh some betty mopan or eric dolphy's solos but i'm gonna
[15:14]have to i'm gonna have to check that out after the podcast can i just interrupt you right now aaron
[15:18]thank you um so here's the deal is that i have to admit something the girl i dated in high school
[15:23]was a bass clarinet player yeah okay so
[15:27]yeah see russell's laughing that is correct that is the correct response
[15:32]rob that segues directly into the other thing i heard this week on the radio there was a um
[15:40]it was a studio show on the jazz radio station heading i think the guy's name was jason marshall
[15:45]i might get this wrong he was a baritone sexophonist and as they were signing off
[15:51]he was talking about a word he was talking about all of the stuff he's music he's got
[15:57]out and the just wait and the host of the show was like yeah that's great man it sounds wonderful
[16:03]you know everyone check this man out and he said keep that reed wet
[16:06]today i learned that it's called a saxophonist what is it what did you say what was the word
[16:15]that you can just bring little little rosie back on if we're gonna peddle filth the whole time
[16:19]yeah this is the clean episode i already know you say man like appreciate you appreciate all
[16:25]the music you keep that reed wet so hopefully
[16:27]rob that's what's going on with your bass clarinet girlfriend i heard that too i watched a youtube
[16:32]video with this riley reed i would recommend looking her up i think she's a uh professor
[16:36]of something i was gonna ask when you when you're a kid and they're like proposing as like the third
[16:41]grader you're gonna pay to play the bass clarinet a parent has to stand up for their kid at that
[16:47]point like i remember when i was a kid and i like i was in between they were suggesting i play the
[16:51]baritone because no one wanted to play the baritone and i was i was like no i don't want
[16:57]that it's like as a parent if your kid gets suggested like a terrible instrument don't
[17:01]you have to stand up and put your foot down and say no you are if one of your kids play the bass
[17:07]you are you are putting way more thought into parenting than i have in the last five years i
[17:12]will say that like if my kid came home and was like i'm playing an instrument i'd be like great
[17:15]that's it that's the end of the conversation like there's no reason they're not gonna i know my kids
[17:19]they're not gonna be playing it for a long time they're gonna do but don't certain instruments
[17:22]give you bad social credibility as a kid oh yeah like if like if your kid if your
[17:27]daughter came home and she was dating a french horn player on this come on that tiny little
[17:31]embouchure please that tiny little embouchure is not gonna fit in with our family here
[17:35]also dated french horn player in high school should tell you there's there's a portion of most
[17:43]what your kids do that you realize like they're not going to be a professional
[17:47]bass clarinetist right so it's like if they want have any interest at all in doing something and
[17:52]they just hey let that ride that way for four years until they get sick of it and be done with
[17:57]there's a little bit of that too russell that just pops in like sure you know you can't make
[18:01]everybody be the starting point guard on the basketball team right and so if they want to be
[18:06]the third shooter that comes off the bench and just wants to be on the team and play that's great
[18:11]and that's what i think the uh the bass clarinetists is they're like the fourth person
[18:16]off the bench on the basketball team right let's face it they're the equipment manager we all know
[18:20]that yeah russell what instrument would you want your kid to play where you're like hell yeah my
[18:25]kid's cool as shit like you want this instrument and they're singing it and they're singing it and
[18:27]your pictures you know what i mean like they're i don't know i think there's probably there's
[18:32]probably gender stereotypes here that i don't want to go into in terms of playing instruments
[18:36]so so i think it's i think it's hard to answer that but like if you're a kid and let's say the
[18:42]medium is whatever instrument you want to pick like a trumpet is a fun instrument a saxophone
[18:47]a fun instrument if you could i think those are fun ones but like the tuba like is immediately
[18:53]going to like a bigger guy like you're not the cool kid you're not having
[18:57]fun in high school if you're the tuba player right no no you're certainly not if you're the
[19:02]baritone player you're not you're not even you're not even big enough to carry the tuba you've got
[19:06]to play the smaller the baritone this is when i know russell was never on a marching band bus
[19:11]i now the tubas were having fun i promise you before i went to school those guys were doing
[19:16]fine just think of their size their balls i mean we've talked about this before you know they have
[19:21]huge balls what do you guys think are there instruments on the upper on the the credibility
[19:26]social cred scale
[19:27]higher than i've got one that's going to beat all of yours so i'm going to wait till the end
[19:30]i think anything in the percussion side of things because when you get older then you're the drummer
[19:35]in the band and every band needs a drummer right and if you can get that bass coach patrick taught
[19:41]me that all the good drummers that have ever played in great rock and roll bands started out
[19:46]in marching band or some sort of band where they were you know on the on the drum core whatever
[19:51]they call it the drum line you know things like that so i think you know we've talked about this
[19:55]for years would you rather be a drummer or a drummer and a drummer and a drummer and a drummer
[19:57]be the pro athlete or be in a band forever and i'm changing my tune man i think any high school
[20:03]cred you got from being on some sort of sports team this just gets blown away by being a drummer
[20:09]in a band when you're in your 30s or your 40s up there rocking out when everybody else is just
[20:14]wearing cowboy hats and polos like i am to concerts while watching them i think that's a great point
[20:19]man because i do think having a percussionist at home they just have a block and some sticks and
[20:23]they can practice whenever they want it's not going to like break your brain right i mean you're not
[20:27]a full drum kid at home but i am going to warn you at some point that percussionist kid they're
[20:32]going to be playing like the triangle in a song they're going to rotate over to the triangle and
[20:35]you're going to sit there be like oh which kid is yours it's like oh that one back there it's
[20:38]going to be like ding and it's like louder i can't hear you don't you care like that's important
[20:43]that's the problem with the percussionist you think it's going to be like drum line and instead
[20:46]they're playing like the chimes in the back i think the tenor obviously you guys know me i'm
[20:51]going to say the tenor sax is the coolest instrument of all time because that's john
[20:56]coltrane pharaoh sanders
[20:57]albert aylor sonny rollins i think that's the coolest but i actually do we have a piano in
[21:02]the house and i really want and my son has just started to express interest in learning how to
[21:06]play the piano and i mean if you can play the fucking piano you're set man like i really i
[21:11]don't want to push anything on him but if he was if he's really interested in learning i think that
[21:16]is a that's cool as shit so i'm hopeful that he'll do that one interesting you can go from that and
[21:21]absolutely play anything so aaron's kid in the marching band will be playing the piano so yeah
[21:25]apparently he's driving around on a truck he's like oh my god i'm going to play the piano
[21:27]baby grand right yeah they wheel him out there like elton john or like the grand
[21:31]listen what is that can't you isn't there like a walking xylophone like you put it over your back
[21:36]and so then it's kind of like the piano and the and the drums at the same time
[21:40]glockenspiel or whatever russell we've done a couple we've done a couple uh instruments in the
[21:46]past but isn't that kind of the equivalent of when you see like the piccolo players in the
[21:49]marching band you're like hey everybody knows nobody can hear what you're playing don't even
[21:53]bother don't just don't act like everybody can hear what you're doing nobody can hear a thing
[21:57]you do not count guys the correct answer is your kid is a bass player in the jazz band your kid is
[22:04]back there slapping the bass in the jazz band they're keeping that rhythm going just like on
[22:08]a marvelous night for a moon dance everybody's like wow that kid is cool as hell and your kids
[22:12]back there boom boom cecil mcbee jimmy garrison paul chambers that is the coolest kid in the band
[22:18]is the bass player not normally something you think about and the set the second coolest is
[22:23]the mr bass band who just makes bass noises remember last week's list mr bass
[22:27]i'm the bass man
[22:31]art davis ron carter don't we don't be missing any christian mcbride all right rolling going
[22:38]how's it rolling going with matt uh good i rob get it ready get it ready i took a trip
[22:46]i went to nashville tennessee light all right no wait not this one we're not doing this one
[22:51]sorry oh it's time
[22:54]you got i gotta get the red one
[22:57]oh yeah this is the rockin version this is the helmet one right
[23:00]the meat of my story i was just i i put it in my little thing hold on
[23:10]fly tonight and i did not edit the delay there folks yeah the meat of my that's good the meat
[23:21]of my story this guy did this thing and all i could think for like the next hour was all
[23:27]i was gonna talk about on the pod so it was good it just breaks your brain but went to nashville
[23:32]some some fun things in nashville you know went there for work but ended up going to like a hockey
[23:37]game just because there was a hockey game the night we were there so bought ten dollar uh tickets to
[23:43]standing room only basically right and i have learned dollars yeah i mean so it's great so
[23:50]it's basically get in and then just they just want you to buy beer and nachos and everything
[23:53]but okay i've learned and here's the trick russell and i want you to learn this trick okay
[23:57]trick let me get my ticket trick if you get ticket master and you have or or any sort of app
[24:02]right yeah going on going great right yeah this is yeah my kid definitely has cried a couple days
[24:08]about this it's going fine and so you can see which seats aren't sold right so you can see
[24:13]you can go to section 121 road j seats one through six aren't sold because they still
[24:18]have tickets available scouting out mpc and so then you can see which seats aren't there
[24:23]so you can get some pretty good seats if you're standing or only or you could
[24:27]go there with pretty good confidence that nobody's going to come and kick you out of those seats
[24:31]you are a modern day evil knievel i said the other podcast that daredevils are dead you are
[24:37]a daredevil my heart rate would be flying if i was just sitting in the seat that wasn't mine
[24:41]oh my god i can't what i'm saying is he's scouting it out till he's looking at the app and saying no
[24:47]one's bought the ticket he doesn't even have to worry yeah so you don't worry because you can
[24:50]still look you're sitting in the seats you can see so i did that we went to section whatever it
[24:56]was it was kind of you know mid dot on one side of the ice was the other side it was on the penalty
[25:02]box lower level lower level yep no ushers you get around the usher somehow yeah because all of these
[25:08]places that have these standing room only they get it right so it's not like they're checking
[25:12]they understand and they'll come up and tell you hey you know and you say oh i got a standing room
[25:16]only ticket and everybody understands we got a standing room only ticket no big deal i think it
[25:20]helps too if you're not a total dick right like if you're just a normal person they'll take it
[25:23]because i know that you told me earlier that when you did this you
[25:26]an usher stopped you and you said hey can i take this seat you know i know nobody's sitting there
[25:30]and he goes yeah yeah and it turns out it was raymond usher or rusher amen rusher amen is what
[25:38]i just called it so we're gonna move on all right so then yeah i don't want to take forever on this
[25:42]so i'm sitting in section 121 it's across from the benches right so i'm looking across the other
[25:47]way and i can see right next to the visitor's bench row two seats right on the glass next to
[25:56]sitting there right and i can see for the first 10 minutes of the game nobody's sitting there so
[26:00]i'm sitting there and i'm with the person i'm like hey you're upgrading over your upgrade here
[26:04]i'm like let's let's you want to go try it and she's like yep let's go you know so walk over
[26:09]there get two beers while we're while we're up and adam i'm gonna go we sit there and didn't
[26:15]get bothered for a period and a half russell we did not get bothered not one iota and we're right
[26:21]next to the bench and you can hear everything you can see everything and it is unbelievable so
[26:26]live in the high life for 10 you know 10 bucks got row two seats right next to the and then so
[26:33]then of course next time that happens jeez matt can you can you please text me so i can find a
[26:38]stream of that game and try to see you on the screen that would yeah fill me with so much joy
[26:42]for sure for sure and so then you know of course we get through first period ends about five
[26:48]minutes is going into the second period and then two nice ladies come up and just say oh well you're
[26:52]in our seats you know good this makes it all not work and it's like and it's and so i mean
[26:56]like you're never going to see any of those people ever again in the history of your life
[27:00]and i probably will never go to nashville to see a hockey game you know ever again i mean who knows
[27:06]probably but i'm never gonna go sit right next to the bench row two ever again so why do i care
[27:12]if somebody somebody tells me to get out of their seats it's just like just just because i'm never
[27:17]gonna see rob again doesn't mean i should throw shit on his sweatshirt or whatever happened to
[27:21]him last week right like just because you won't see someone again doesn't mean you should take
[27:26]priority did you move matt well then by that time i'd seen a period and a half for 10 bucks and it's
[27:32]like well let's go out and listen to some more cover bands drink more beer like why don't i see
[27:36]more hockey you know they got the hockey game at the bars so why why am i gonna waste time inside
[27:41]of a hockey arena when i'm on what are you doing hanging out with us you got life figured out you
[27:45]don't don't waste your time with some schmucks like us listen to your story i realize i think
[27:49]i'm gonna get a divorce i think this is what i need to do this sounds awesome just going to games
[27:55]and be like i don't care about anything anymore this is great oh my god that was so i should have
[28:00]said that that was the main point it's like just keep upgrading if we get kicked out or something
[28:04]i'm not gonna go sit in the upper deck or go back to like my row jc we'll just go to the bar you
[28:09]know there's so much there's so much going you know this okay so the other thing that happened
[28:12]i will say matt though i think the women that you took their seats they were a little when they got
[28:17]up when you got up and left and then they sat down and they realized around their feet was just like
[28:20]three nacho cups with cheese still in it that you had just left there you're like yeah sorry it's a
[28:25]i will say the nachos there they had an option so you buy nachos this is i've never seen this
[28:31]and they've got two cups for one supposed to be for cheese and one's supposed to be for salsa and
[28:36]so they asked do you want cheese and salsa and i said no just cheese no jalapenos and so they
[28:41]filled both up with cheese both of them so i had way more cheese than i you know you're always
[28:47]running out of cheese when you got nachos you're always down the last three or four chips you're
[28:51]you're having to start that's right more judicious what's going on so so it's pretty good
[28:55]second thing that happened we stayed at a place called the moxie which is right around where that's
[29:01]at right across from the johnny cash and it is about the best located hotel down there i think
[29:07]you could get to and they've got live music playing in a bar right it's an awesome hotel if
[29:12]anybody needs a recommendation it's great so the but the highlight of my trip was in the airport as
[29:18]it always is and i think and i don't think we've talked about this kind of person before in the
[29:25]my there at the time where i can experience this because usually as you guys know i'm trying to
[29:30]i want to get to the i want to get on that flight as it's as the door is closing i don't want to be
[29:36]sitting around waiting around you're hitting nine evil kenevals so we're we're sitting there because
[29:41]we got i had to do a phone call in the airport it was scheduled so then all of a sudden we've
[29:47]got like 45 minutes before the flight's going so i'm sitting there just typing in the computer and
[29:51]all of a sudden there's some jackass who's out in the middle of the airport and he's like i'm not
[29:55]middle of the hallway and he's got his earbuds in and he decides that this is the spot where he's
[30:01]going to have his new sales meeting for the next 15 minutes and he is shouting he has no idea he's
[30:08]shouting right and he's moving his hands and he's walking back and forth he has no idea that there
[30:13]are 500 other people at six gates at the like it's one of those dead end ones where they you know
[30:19]and he is just shouting to the point where everybody is just staring at him and i'm like i cannot
[30:25]believe this and i can't focus because i go ahead do you do you have any idea this is what i always
[30:29]do with these people do you have any idea what his job was how detailed can you get with his job like
[30:33]what was he selling what was he doing i love i was trying to figure it out and he had all of the he
[30:38]had all the lingo down you know we're gonna workshop that and we'll put a pin in it and you
[30:42]know all the all of those cliches that went but the best part of it was living there was i mean
[30:49]there's a large number of you know cowboys whether they're real or they're fake or they're you know
[30:55]in between from there that are walking up and down that airport after about 15 minutes when that guy
[31:00]finally got off his phone call three guys just started clapping they just started clapping
[31:05]and it was and the guy still had no idea what was going on but i am laughing my ass off because
[31:11]this guy i mean and then what are you gonna do right i mean you're gonna go up to the guy and
[31:14]be like shut the fuck up nobody cares you are not that important you know like you just don't do
[31:20]that right but at the same time like how are you that dense that you don't understand i
[31:24]how you sound i mean are you surprised at all like no it's something about airports
[31:29]something about airports where people are like fuck this this is not society i can do whatever
[31:34]i want i can i can go wherever i want i can i can go wash myself in the bathroom it's like what how
[31:38]long is this flight maybe it's his very first business trip or something but like no haven't
[31:45]we all learned that you can't take a call in the airport it's impossible because like it's and if
[31:49]you're ever on the other end of the line where someone's doing a call in the airport you're just
[31:54]talking day of pto i don't want to hear this is boarding call behind you well this is rich coming
[31:59]from aaron by the way i just want to point that out real rich no and you know they've got all
[32:04]the speakers going off you know if you've left your wallet back at the gate please come back
[32:09]please come back you know it is so loud and so it is the worst
[32:14]i've been i've been traveling enough now you know there's there's a crowd right i mean
[32:19]you can just pick these guys out and i'm probably one of them that's why i try not to look like
[32:24]one of them you know they've got their they got their nice jeans on and their brown shoes and
[32:28]some sort of like blue shirt and like a blue sport coat right and they've got their earbuds in
[32:34]and you know they're just walking up and they've got the they've got the roller thing and then
[32:39]they've got their backpack and they're just set to go and these guys travel all the time right
[32:44]and it's like i just don't get why you think you're that important so i don't know but it
[32:50]was just it was unbelievable and the best part of it was is these three guys were just like
[32:54]three cowboys just started clapping but then this guy didn't even understand what he was going you
[32:57]know you know what you should do is airdrop him a picture that says like shut the fuck up and then
[33:01]it'll look at that would be hilarious so that was my role that was my role and go on russell
[33:08]rolling going how's it going with you rolling going things are going good i i did not travel
[33:12]anywhere this week i actually stayed in minneapolis and i went out with a few cousins of mine and we
[33:16]went to a place called we're calling them now cousins this is getting weird did you go with
[33:20]kirko kirko chains a few cousins you kind of went like this it's like oh that's a weird
[33:29]we went to a place i mean first cousin's not allowed second third man it's allowed a majority
[33:35]of states just let you know yeah i can list them off for you and there's no reason why okay
[33:39]have i ever got i don't know if i can take this one back i'll just ask it now anyways
[33:45]have i ever asked you guys about the cousin of the cousin is that is that fair
[33:50]game or not have we ever talked about that cousin god russell we talk about this every
[33:56]episode you bring up the cousin of the cousin so let's let's say you were at like a wedding
[34:00]or a party and it was your cousin's wedding let's say it's your cousin's wedding yeah pretty erotic
[34:06]and they have a cousin on the other side of the family not blood related at all other side of the
[34:11]family no blood so your cousin's cousin is your cousin's cousin off game or or is a game on from
[34:17]a dating perspective all good is it
[34:20]the russell's family tree is gonna like go like it's like a dream catcher it just goes out and
[34:24]then comes back in at the end sketches itself what are you guys thoughts great you're gonna
[34:29]save it you're on limits think of all the money you're gonna save at the wedding russell you're
[34:32]only gonna have one side of the wedding you're gonna invite half the people everybody's gonna
[34:35]know each other this is a brilliant blood relation it's all good oh good yeah i think so for sure i
[34:40]think it's fine yeah if anything honestly hot because you have a cousin in common i mean that's
[34:45]pretty hot i think it's like you gotta go i got a cousin we got the same cousin but we're still
[34:50]you know having sex is what i'm referring to to my cousin to my cousin who listens to this this is
[34:56]not on your side of the family so don't worry it's one of those great things we'll miss when twitter
[35:00]is gone is uh there were there were people who would do searches for hot cousin on the holidays
[35:05]and just and just repost all the tweets of people being like why is my cousin so hot i don't know if
[35:09]this is right but i think my cousin is hot what twitters are you following i was nodding but now
[35:16]i'm like yeah aaron i was it was a guy who was he
[35:20]went by maboot on twitter and he was jeb lund and he would do like he would just like search for
[35:24]people posting these and repost them like i used to do that bit in my classroom all the time where
[35:28]i'd be like well we all know we have that one attractive cousin and then one year somebody
[35:32]goes oh yeah and everybody turned and looked at him and i was like i need to stop doing this bit
[35:36]i think i just destroyed this kid's life whereas this year i just told the kids these are seventh
[35:40]graders i said yeah it's like when you take a mirror and then you draw a long hair on it and
[35:43]then you kiss it to see what it's like to kiss a female version of yourself and i'm like i've never
[35:48]done that like that's so weird right
[35:49]that's not cool that's you guys think it's cool and they're like what's going it was like my weird
[35:53]like podcast bleeding into my professional life like not not the proudest moment not where i would
[35:58]want to get reviewed for sure but yeah russell you should fuck your cousin's cousin we've been
[36:02]waiting for this podcast to get discovered by people at your school and that's not happening
[36:08]so really what's what's happening now is your podcast persona because it's just a character
[36:11]it's just a character i'm not like this it's bleeding into your teaching so that's gonna get
[36:15]you fired and then you can just go do this full time yeah real rob it is coming around actual rob does
[36:19]not think cousin cousin action is hot okay not cool don't do it podcast rob i'm searching i'll
[36:26]tell you guys what i'm doing on twitter right after this to be clear it was cousin of cousin
[36:30]not cousin and cousin there's a major difference there so how did it go for you russell yeah how
[36:36]hot was it on a scale of cousin or cousin how hot was it discussion i want to have is how i went out
[36:45]with my cousins in a non um west virginia style room and i'm like i'm not gonna do it i'm not gonna
[36:49]man okay we just went out as friends yeah hey guys i know we're cousins but tonight
[36:54]we're just friends okay we're just friends i don't want this to get weird i know we're cousins but
[36:58]tonight we're friends they'd be like what you'd be like you know what i'm talking about we're just
[37:01]friends this is a platonic cousinship we went out to a place called punch bowl social have you guys
[37:08]ever been there before i got put in the cousin zone i heard that man i'm listening to you guys
[37:19]sometimes so i went to this place called punch bowl social it's kind of almost like an adult
[37:24]arcade but they've got all sorts of games in there right so they've got um he's back at the
[37:28]west end am i thinking of the right one yes it's the west end they've got okay bar but it's they've
[37:33]got skeeball karaoke darts bowling like all sorts of games some arcade games but there were two games
[37:40]that we ended up playing i went on to get your guys thoughts on them the first one was big jenga
[37:43]have you guys ever played the big jenga before what are your thoughts on big jenga as an adult
[37:48]game i think big jenga is fun at the bar because everybody's watching it's kind of high stakes
[37:52]big jenga by the way rosie is think about a jenga block but it's like the size of your penis i mean
[37:57]it's pretty big right and you're trying to pull them out right and you're trying to pull them out
[38:01]and but they're huge so when it falls it's like dangerous like you have to kind of jump away
[38:05]that's that's big jenga i don't know why i explained the whole bar here's it when it went
[38:09]yeah when someone knocks it over it becomes impaired to everyone in the bar that it just
[38:13]happened it's like jenga but bigger i don't know if i probably need to explain it more actually big
[38:17]jenga is like big it's like jenga but it's like magnified it's bigger we're going for a three-hour
[38:21]episode don't do that to me don't blame me that was a good bit so the one thing i was going to
[38:27]ask you guys is isn't it weird how like when you get older you still argue with with your friends
[38:32]or cousins and cousins of cousins about like stupid game rules like yeah we were getting
[38:36]into like into the rules of jenga people were getting like legit pissed because people were
[38:40]tapping pieces on the jenga board to see if they would move before they were joe from woodbury is
[38:45]that one of your cousins
[38:47]no but it seems like something that guy would do russell you can tap a jenga piece i think that's
[38:52]legal i've never played where you can't tap a piece that's a crazy that's crazy you you don't
[38:57]think you can tap i'm asking oh yeah you can tap you definitely gotta be able to tap there's only
[39:03]one rule take one block out and doesn't fall right and replace it so if you're tapping other
[39:09]ones to figure out which one it is there's only there's only one objective get a block out of
[39:14]there can you use two hands when you're tapping it or not no
[39:17]no one hands only that's a that's a jenga rule that's a real i think i mean two is nice i don't
[39:21]know sometimes two is okay you're two when you're tapping it sometimes two hands when you're tapping
[39:26]it's nice no no that's ridiculous it's a one hand tab i mean do you go like one on one side one of
[39:32]the other do you like flip it over yeah i don't know i mean this is why it's this is why how do
[39:38]you how do you grab it with two hands rosie if you're i'm just saying you're changing things up
[39:42]if it's a nice shape you know like the shape like the shape that i know is like two hands next are
[39:49]you right-handed or like do you golf right-handed or left-handed i'm just trying to figure this out
[39:53]man this is i wasn't talking about myself shit i will i would say to be able to grab a jenga
[39:59]block two-handed would make me so happy like growing up i remember i'd watch a movie people
[40:03]be grabbing the jenga blocks with two hands i'd be like wait what you could put a hand and then
[40:07]another hand like that's crazy to me you guys are the worst
[40:12]when you're stacking the jenga blocks do you have to one of my cousins pulled a stunt where
[40:18]instead of creating a new layer of three he started stacking them up up vertically and we
[40:24]got into this huge argument about do you have to stack in rows of three or can you go vertical
[40:29]that is the worst kind of fuckery russell it makes no sense because you could just stack it
[40:35]how can you i'm so glad to hear i've never heard anyone say that you can stack it however you want
[40:40]that person should have been arrested
[40:42]honestly that makes no fucking sense if they did that and then you hit him on the head with a bottle
[40:47]everybody be like yes that makes sense russell that's the cousin i would not date okay i would
[40:53]not date that cousin well i'm gonna have to retract my previous offer this okay
[41:00]the other another game we played and i don't know if we've ever talked about this before i feel like
[41:05]this is kind of in the line of ping pong but it was foosball are you guys foosball guys or not
[41:10]do you enjoy playing yeah i love foosball yeah but that's
[41:12]that can get heated too right because can you can you flip it or not can you spin can you spin or no
[41:17]spin is the question right because people play differently spin or no i have never played a
[41:22]foosball game and been happy afterwards ever i've never felt satisfied playing a foosball game i
[41:27]don't know if i've ever won a foosball game so unsatisfied it's it's the worst the only joy i
[41:32]get out of foosball is pushing sometimes i push their handles they hit them in the nuts and that's
[41:36]about the most joy i get out of it i used to enjoy the spin i used to think like yeah spin it spin in
[41:42]their game but i don't think i'm i'm i'm against the spin now i think you gotta like no spin yeah
[41:46]i'd say no you guys like foosball like right now if somebody's like hey do you want a foosball table
[41:52]would you take one in your house no one's ever wanted their own foosball table no one's ever
[41:57]been happy with their choice to buy a foosball table but i would play it if it would leave after
[42:01]was there any bigger indication that you were like at a kid's house where they're going to be
[42:05]allowed to drink in high school more than if they had a foosball table down in the basement
[42:08]like when you're in middle school and there's a like if i my kids went to a friend's house and i
[42:12]was like oh yeah there's a foosball table in the basement i was like okay we're done no more going
[42:16]over there the only other one would be if they had a table where you could take the top off and
[42:21]it turned into a poker oh yeah oh that's you know yeah these parents make bad decisions it's gonna
[42:25]lead down to the kids making bad decisions you're not going over there so you guys are saying no
[42:30]spinning no spin no but it kind of depends on who you're playing right i mean like if you got
[42:36]somebody who's never played you gotta allow them just to play and they're gonna play and they're
[42:38]just to spin to make them feel like they know what they're doing but if you're playing like
[42:42]hardcore no spin no spinning when it's hardcore yeah yeah the spin is the fun part guys random
[42:49]you got to control you got to control that thing it's more spinning you're not controlling you
[42:53]got to keep your shit under control it's not as satisfying to you know spinning it like you crank
[42:58]that thing is satisfying but it's just it's more finesse if you don't spin just give it a quick
[43:03]jerk with a quick quick you know i like it a little flick a little flick i like it when it
[43:08]out of control i mean when i don't know where it's gonna go it could go anywhere you know what
[43:12]i mean like you might be picking it off the floor later you just have no idea that's what i like
[43:15]that's i just like up on a chandelier anywhere yeah you like you wake up the next day you look
[43:19]at your couch you're like oh gotta get a wet rag see i like to know where it's going so i like to
[43:24]you know have a little bit more control the other thing that was interesting about this foosball
[43:27]table it was like an extra large foosball table so instead of having like four levers to play
[43:32]there was like eight levers so there was numerous new so so you could legit put
[43:38]like three or four people on the team on each side can i can i just say right now that when
[43:43]you said oh it's one of those big large foosball tables aaron just goes like this he nods and i was
[43:47]like what the fuck are you nodding at what when have you ever seen a giant foosball table that
[43:51]is not a real thing i was just like i was nodding as though like that sounds like an amazing no he
[43:55]was faking it russell he's not really listening to your story i am because a large foosball table
[43:58]is insane four people to a team you might never get to touch the ball so so eventually some of
[44:04]my cousins weren't into like this whole group atmosphere that we had so they took they were
[44:08]on so we got down to two on two on the big foosball table so then the question becomes
[44:12]when it's down in the offensive zone do you and your partner both move down to where you're where
[44:18]you've got nobody on the back half of the table and then you're running back and forth depending
[44:23]on where what zone the ball is or do you stick with one person in the front and one person in the
[44:28]back you're gonna press forward zero push up i yeah i think i think it is more fun to run up
[44:36]right because you can't let one person be up front and have all the fun
[44:38]that's not good like you're just gonna let one person score meanwhile you're in the back like
[44:41]watching or filming or whatever like that's not i don't know running back and forth playing foosball
[44:45]became a little more active than what i had signed up for but playing defense at any of these kind of
[44:51]games i mean sure you're probably gonna win if you play better defense just like any other you
[44:55]know game but that's where's the fun in that get out there score some goals run it up take some
[45:00]chances if you lose you're just going with your cousin it's fine yeah we're only going rob with
[45:08]liss i went to uh let me see which one i'm going to do here let me look at the time okay uh i will
[45:14]say that i went uh i went bowling the other day i went bowling we had friends go bowling on like a
[45:19]friday night just four of us um and the bowling senior like we went down there and there was a
[45:25]uh a bouncer outside the door we had to show him that we had a reservation and our ids to get in
[45:30]can you imagine that at a bowling alley this this is like when you guys ripped off that karaoke bar
[45:36]because they you claim they charge you too much
[45:38]there was a i was like most bowling alleys i've been to you walk in and you cannot find anyone
[45:43]who works there like you just kind of walk around you're like where is anybody working like i need
[45:46]shoes i need an alley or whatever there's nobody ever there but we were bowling and we had to get
[45:51]reservations so an hour or two hours right yeah well an hour is not enough time right for four
[45:57]people so we picked two hours i'm gonna tell you right now it's too much time two hours way too
[46:01]much time to be bowling yeah hour 20 hour 20 is the ideal amount of time for bowl we bowled three
[46:08]games oh it's too much and i'll tell you i want to remind you i was in a bowling league okay with a
[46:14]certain guy who was uh less athletic than me at softball okay and we signed up for this bowling
[46:19]league in uh where was it uh it was we were in this bowling league and they were like okay well
[46:25]this is um 32 weeks and i was like wait what they're like yeah the league goes 32 weeks i was
[46:30]like that's almost a year school year that's that's literally a school year like 32 weeks
[46:35]of bowling three games on a wednesday night and what you don't realize is that when you're bowling
[46:38]that third game you're just trying to grip the ball and not have it like fall out of your hands
[46:43]your hands hurt like your skin gets eaten up it's did you get holidays off like teachers or did you
[46:48]have to go every week nope thanksgiving we're there bowling but you know i was also in a bowling
[46:54]league in high school i had forgotten about this you know you know like right now i'm like i'm
[46:58]saying to myself like i'm so busy i should pare some stuff down like we've got this gambling pool
[47:01]i do the fantasy football and now i'm doing a world cup thing and i'm like i should pare it
[47:05]down and then i remember that when i was in high school i was in a bowling league that met at
[47:08]7 30 on saturday mornings so every day and i did not really i didn't really like bowling like it
[47:14]wasn't my fun i didn't care for it that much so we would get up parents just do that was one of
[47:18]those things just to get you out of the house kind of a thing i was 17 i drove there i was 16
[47:22]i love how it's like seven in the morning like you need alley time like kids need ice time
[47:29]like when they're middle school hockey players and they can't get ice time any other time
[47:33]like like the bowling alley didn't have a 6 p.m on a tuesday for you you had to do 7 a.m at the
[47:38]7 30 on saturday the the best is that we had a kid that one time they showed up and it was just
[47:43]him bowling like sometimes you'd show up your teammates just wouldn't show up so it was just
[47:46]you bowling so you'd bowl three games that kid was the baritone player and it was also turned
[47:53]out to be team picture day so our team picture was just one kid holding a bowling ball like this
[47:58]it's the funniest fucking thing i've ever seen um but we went to this bowling alley and what
[48:02]was depressing was the videos when you miss spares you guys know like the videos they do
[48:07]where it shows like a bowling ball
[48:08]this one instead of like a fun animation showing a bowling ball like uh dropping a bomb on a bunch
[48:14]of pins or doing something entertaining they if you missed a spare they would just show videos
[48:19]that were slightly depressing like they would show a video like there was one like music video
[48:24]or anything was it oh there was one yeah you're like this is long there was one where literally
[48:29]it was just a guy juggling and then he drops one and that was it you know what i mean like it was
[48:36]it was just like or somebody like walked
[48:38]out and they dropped their bag and then that would be it i was like this is the video you're
[48:41]showing like this slightly depressing stuff so anyway that was my rolling but it was just one of
[48:46]those anyway let's talk what did you roll what did you roll rob did you break 100 oh my god yes i did
[48:52]i rolled 140 my first game nice i rolled like no 120 my first game and then got up to 140 in the
[48:58]second and then third one i was struggling to get over 100 i did win the three game series i didn't
[49:03]i don't want to point that out but i did well you were in two you were you were in two weeks
[49:07]before i don't know if you would be you were in two weeks before i don't know if you would be
[49:08]you were in two weeks before i don't know if you would be you were in two weeks before i don't know if you would be
[49:08]you rolled a hook or straight what's your i was starting with a little bit of a hook
[49:11]and then i realized like why am i doing this and then i just started rolling straight but i will
[49:15]tell you i did roll the 16 pounder i was the biggest i had the biggest balls of anybody out
[49:20]there that is a that is a move that is a move of the guy who plays the tuba yeah not the baritone
[49:26]don't you feel a little bit of pressure rob as an american record holder like you can't go in there
[49:31]no a guy as strong as you are and pick the eight pound ball or whatever like you gotta roll a big
[49:36]the thing is too is that those
[49:38]those are the balls that have finger holes the size that my fingers need
[49:41]like when you look at a bowling ball and you see the one where it's like jesus christ who
[49:45]slams their fingers looks like you could fit a whole stick of butter in there that's the ball
[49:49]that i need to like put my fingers in there my fingers are so big and fat and they need to go
[49:55]to that bowling ball you know who you know who's got the best hook of anyone we know who's got big
[50:02]fat fingers who's barry from burnsville he's got the best hook i've ever seen oh god he doesn't even stick his
[50:07]fingers in there
[50:08]he just stays on the outside
[50:13]let's get into the album it's time for nobody's favorite part of the show let's talk about oh is
[50:21]this a music podcast oh yeah i should have written down more than one example of what happens when
[50:25]you don't get a spare i realize now just writing down one was a little anticlimactic you know what
[50:31]rob that was kind of sad that's on me was that why it was sad is they only had one example it's just
[50:36]the juggler over and over no i'm really trying to pull my brain like what the other examples were
[50:41]and i can't think about it yeah like a guy falling off a horse you know it's just like it's like
[50:48]funny stone videos but it was like anyway what am i talking about let's get into the album let's
[50:52]talk about moon dance by van morrison so this is van morrison's second album second studio album
[51:00]because of course he was originally in them okay and then he left so man he wasn't them
[51:06]who no it was them actually so he was in them but uh but guess who what was he doing in them
[51:13]he was the uh he was their singer were they okay with that yes no but not yes
[51:20]did they ever kick him out of them no them aaron are you saying then was he ever expelled from them
[51:29]he left them
[51:32]this is the record none of these
[51:36]none of these sessions have ever made it through an edit not one i don't get why we're so we're so
[51:41]good at improv i don't understand why this doesn't work out so he had left and he recorded brown eye
[51:46]girl and then got picked up by warner brothers and went and made the album we've already done
[51:50]into the mystic with of course the third greatest uh no hold on hold on okay the sweetest thing
[51:57]astral weeks they did we did astral weeks and number 60 on the list
[52:02]astral weeks okay so that is not what i have written down so i'm
[52:06]gonna have to maybe debate you guys on this okay
[52:09]astral weeks much much to russell's point where not one of those uh back and forth has ever made
[52:16]it rob not once have we ever corrected you and not been right just want to say
[52:21]every single time we've been right i don't know about you guys gave him a hard time about that
[52:27]raymond usher thing a while back i don't know if that was right or not we still haven't seen a lot
[52:31]of proof okay something to think about are you asking to see his birth certificate
[52:35]so uh astral weeks which of course is the album let me get that clean astral weeks now i can edit
[52:41]that out and put it in you guys are gonna look like idiots um it came out and it was a total
[52:46]flop it was a commercial flop 100 and van morrison was devastated and he moved up to
[52:52]uh northern new york near woodstock with his wife who was named janet planet janet planet was her
[52:58]name julia's name's gonna be julia gulia and basically he was like
[53:05]he said listen i made this album that i wanted to make in astral weeks and nobody liked it he said
[53:11]so quote i had to forget about the artistic thing because it didn't make sense on a practical level
[53:14]one has to live so he came into this with saying like when you listen to this album you have to
[53:19]realize he's saying to himself i need to make a marketable commercial album yet at the same time
[53:25]i think you cannot deny that you hear astral weeks in this album like you hear the jazz influence
[53:29]you hear that guitar because of course astral weeks we remember was uh basically him playing
[53:34]guitar with jazz musicians in the back and he was like i'm gonna make a commercial album and i'm gonna
[53:35]and it was a kind of a more of an improv type thing and i think you hear a lot of that influence
[53:40]on this album but this album was an immediate success like it came out and it just blew up
[53:45]got up to into the top 30 in the u.s on the charts and he was on the cover of the rolling stone in
[53:51]1970 so this 10 copies for my mother this album put him on the cover of the rolling stone and i
[53:59]got to tell you guys i think this might be the artist who i have grown to love the most
[54:05]uh on this list it's stony i mean just listen yeah you should check out his recent stuff then
[54:11]oh his anti-covid stuff i mean we've all been lied to
[54:16]i wasn't gonna bring that up weird question can you go to the beginning again rob just
[54:22]click the beginning of the song very beginning sure
[54:24]what do you guys think where he just hits these lyrics right off the bat it happens on like three
[54:32]or four of these songs like there's no real musical intro it's just like lyrics
[54:35]right off the bat what do you think of that i like it yeah i think it's different it uh
[54:40]it kind of sets up the song i mean it's not traditional it's his own way of doing it i like
[54:45]i love it yeah you guys know i love i love songs that start right from the jump so i'm good with
[54:49]that there's jazz i didn't i was reading that he's referring to being stoned like a jelly roll
[54:57]which refers to jelly roll morton air do you know anything about jelly roll morton or not
[55:01]yeah he was a jazz i don't know if he was jazz or if you'd call him ragtime or not but yeah he
[55:05]was an early jazz uh pianist uh i'm sure he was famous for certain types of music i think he
[55:12]played rags but um yeah i'm sure van was a bit must have been a big fan of jelly roll van said
[55:17]he used to listen to him with his dad all the time but the song getting stoned he was talking about
[55:21]getting stoned in nature like you just go out because you know at the time he's he's up in
[55:25]upstate new york but he's remembering his time back in ireland where he's just he's like you
[55:28]go outside and you're struck with how beautiful it is and you just sit there and look so
[55:32]i have no idea what that's like okay the other day i was walking up the stairs and i
[55:35]looked at my hand had a band-aid on it a band-aid so this is a little bit different living in the
[55:40]city but you can hear i think you know the recordings that i've heard of jelly roll morton
[55:45]they're all old right so they're not not high quality uh or they're they might have been high
[55:50]quality at the time they're dusty they're they're crackly and it's kind of this loose
[55:56]jangly feeling so i can i can see how that's the sound he's going for
[56:00]i i also read that a jelly roll is also a slang reference to women's genitalia
[56:05]when you claim to come when you clear it would you like to comment on that yeah i don't think
[56:09]i'll comment on that piece of thing no i think i'll not although i might maybe you should go
[56:13]get a donut tomorrow morning are you guys like jelly rolls or not like do you try to get that
[56:20]donut in the morning are you serious this week you try to wake up the person who sells the
[56:24]donuts too early and it ruins the rest of your day i will just say it that way good luck with
[56:29]that yeah hey wake up what the fuck you're the worst person in the world so no or
[56:35]maybe i told you we're cousins of cousins not direct cousins
[56:38]grandpa grandma mona is gonna hate this what if i make some coffee first or no okay no if i let go
[56:46]why don't you just text me when you wake up how about that i was over here reading on my kindle
[56:54]you just text too real way too real uh and now aaron we have a this is the second track and i
[57:05]have a big titular track on this album and it's a big titular track it's a big one one of the biggest
[57:11]i think what he did on this album oh you guys know i love some jazz food who's playing food
[57:18]on this track you may know i do give me one sec so what i think rob now that you mentioned it i
[57:26]think he took a lot of the same instrumentation from astral weeks and then he put it into more
[57:33]pop song structures so these songs are
[57:35]structured a little bit more tightly but he's still using the same instruments he had the same
[57:39]instrumentalist literally in the early recording sessions for this album and then said no this
[57:43]isn't going to work i'll see you guys later he kicked him out and then he used musicians from
[57:46]the woodstock area which is kind of cool uh the the uh tenor saxophonist was also the flute player
[57:55]his name was colin titan colin titan i gotta say what's that opening letter there man it might be
[58:05]if you you look at matt like looking at his phone he's got the big font i'm getting so close to that
[58:11]guys when you look at my kindle my font is embarrassingly big like it's so big that i'm
[58:15]like constantly changing the page like i don't know i'm getting old as hell in that song he
[58:20]mentions he says i just want to make uh love to you have you ever uttered that phrase in your life
[58:26]i thought i did it on the podcast once and you i've heard it i've heard it all i want to do
[58:31]is make love to you very yes
[58:34]and there could be other reasons i brought it up to every time i sing boys to men every time which
[58:39]is at least make love to you twice a day for matt just once in the morning once in the evening just
[58:46]as a closing opening and closing prayer for his day i'll make love to you when you text me too
[58:53]i'll be until then i'll be in the living room you know like i can't wait till that album i got a
[59:04]in this album 498 or something oh i assume it'll be it'll be two by the time they do the list for
[59:10]the fifth time when we're done doing this damn podcast uh listen to the saxophone solo on this
[59:14]i mean you forget there's a whole middle section with piano and sax
[59:19]and it's pretty much there's an alto and a tenor sax i think on almost all these songs
[59:25]yeah double saxophone was fantastic on this and there's also russell a version you can find
[59:31]where there is more or less tambourine and there's also a version where there is more or less tambourine
[59:34]you can hear the tambourine shaking in the back the japanese release of the song totally took
[59:38]out the tambourine they had none less they were they were like tambourine they're like the tambourine
[59:43]is too loud and i realized that's not the song that's actually uh into the mystic so i'm gonna
[59:47]repeat that later okay so shut up i do love the ending to this listen to this
[59:53]oh you guys know you guys know this is speaking straight to my heart that's
[60:04]when the flute gets rocking it's so you know this next song is gonna be speaking straight to your
[60:08]heart too you know who's on it don't you aaron wait i don't know if i know what's the next song
[60:14]rob is it van morrison crazy love yeah you know who one of the backup singers is is it paul simon
[60:21]it's emily houston i believe that's whitney houston's mom oh really we've talked about her
[60:26]before yeah i didn't know that oh that's marvelous russell
[60:34]what do you think of his falsetto aaron what do you like we probably talked about his voice before
[60:39]it's super distinctive it's one of a kind what do you think when he kind of goes up into the
[60:43]upper register like that i think yeah i think everything he does vocally on this album and
[60:47]astro weeks it's just it's so pleasant like there's just nothing that you don't enjoy about
[60:53]all of it and even when he's like going to his limits like that it's just it's charming it's
[60:57]pleasant it's perfect on wikipedia they say the song is blue-eyed soul which is a genre i've never
[61:03]heard of
[61:04]and basically it was like i think of like righteous brothers where basically it was like
[61:08]r&b studios could play this but it was by white musicians so they called it blue eye soul i thought
[61:13]that was a fun description of it yeah righteous brothers and then eventually hollow notes you
[61:17]know inherited that sort of crown oh i was on a big hollow notes kick this week it's like mcdonald
[61:22]was in there kenny loggins once in a while oh this is matt's this is right down matt's alley
[61:27]the yacht rock for sure crazy love so so good next up we have caravan this guy loves vans
[61:34]do you think he wears do you think van morrison wears vans wouldn't you like wouldn't you get
[61:40]your own pair of vans if your name was van what i don't get is did you ever hear who he dated
[61:45]no jim morrison his cousin a lot of people don't realize that they were cousins
[61:50]you want to know the reason i love this song so much do you guys ever watch the show the west wing
[62:00]i never got into it i feel like a west wing a fantastic
[62:04]show i would highly recommend it there are two songs from this album in this in the same episode
[62:09]of the west wing there are characters that are listening to the moon dance album and i didn't
[62:14]know this album at all but i immediately recognized this from an episode of the west wing
[62:18]you guys got to check it out you will love it those characters cousins or cousins
[62:22]well those might have been cousins but maybe that's why i see some cousin characters i got
[62:27]some links to send you russell i'm gonna go out on a limb and i'm gonna say i'm calling it this
[62:34]is the so the next song is the end of side one of the album and this is the best side a we have
[62:42]listened to yet every single one of these songs is right i think i agree one thousand percent i
[62:48]there's not one dead there's not one filler there's not one miss on this whole front side
[62:53]including my favorite song by van morrison uh the next one we've got here can you this is in
[62:58]your top hundred isn't it matt this is my this is in my like top 35 matt soft chill songs that
[63:04]i've got but yes in my top hundred oh wait shit i put your wrong one again god damn it i screwed
[63:09]up the joke all right wow man you love this song i appreciate it so much it's a good one this is
[63:17]van morrison where he says oh yeah i talked with my friends about flying on planes so much so i
[63:21]have to uh fly tonight just killed the mood into the mystic to end side one
[63:28]let your soul why do you like this one matt i love this one too what what makes it jump out i mean i
[63:34]think it's you know it's kind of soft and slow and then i mean it just hammers when he gets into
[63:41]the refrain here coming up you know but it's just it's got a good message he's waiting for him come
[63:46]home do you know what noise that is when he talks about the foghorn what's playing that
[63:50]a fog i thought it was strings but it's a saxophone oh and this guy can you hear the
[63:58]you're the tambourine back there yeah don't have to fear it i saw one of the best descriptions of
[64:05]this song when i was reading about it lots of time someone compared it to yesterday by the
[64:09]beatles it's been described as another song where the music and the words seem to have been born
[64:13]together at the same time to make one perfectly formed complete artistic element it is you know
[64:20]just just the you know the title into the mystic just the you know everything you could possibly
[64:24]think of you know for me everybody wants meanings from songs right
[64:28]but like i mean there is just so much you could take out of going into the mystic you really can't
[64:32]imagine this song sounding like anything else this would be one where if you saw him play it live
[64:36]you'd be like i kind of like the album version like do you guys hear that tambourine back there
[64:41]it's super loud now there is actually a mix of this uh song that is tambourine free they just
[64:47]took it out or put it in for the deluxe i can't remember uh actually it was in the japan it was
[64:53]in the japan release so if you want to they do not have a mountain tambourine more they have a
[64:58]less in japan this whole album to me because we've talked about this song a number of times in the in
[65:04]the podcast post game i'm going to get a little bit maudlin and sentimental this entire album to
[65:10]me because matt loves into the mystic so much is all just a build-up to into the mystic and then the
[65:16]and then the letdown after the mystic anytime it's a sharp fall it's a sharp fall but that's a deep
[65:22]chasm that we're going into anytime i listen to this i was just like i can't wait to hear matt's
[65:28]i just want to get to into the mystic because we've talked about it a lot the good news is that
[65:33]this album is only 38 minutes i think any albums over 40 minutes should now be illegal okay and we
[65:38]should actually censor them okay and aaron's giving me a big nod he's good he likes that he
[65:41]likes the censoring stuff he thinks that's good love it hey we're gonna get rid of we're gonna
[65:45]fire any song that's not ready to work hardcore right that's right we're going into albums 2.0
[65:51]you can you got 24 hours i got fired from two jobs for working too hardcore it's so strange
[65:58]come running this now believe it or not this is how stupid people are this was the first single
[66:03]off the album i think they wanted to show that van morrison was like not the weird jazz guy so they
[66:10]kind of i mean to be fair out of any like songs that we've listened to this is probably the more
[66:16]like radio quick quick radio right yeah this this would be the one that you could see like people
[66:23]who don't know van morrison wanting to play this on the radio like moon dance wasn't released as a
[66:28]77 seven years after this album that's crazy right that you wouldn't just hear i don't know
[66:33]into the mystic was ever released as a single i think it's just one of those tracks everybody
[66:37]likes i i completely agree with matt's take on the first half of the album being awesome and i
[66:41]kind of wanted to not like the song but i enjoyed it i thought the song was fun this song were on
[66:46]other albums it would be one of the best songs on the album don't you think it's let's listen to it
[66:50]again it is a bop it's fun it's not bad the problem is it just seems like too much of a like a dylan
[66:58]like a little bit all right or polished production in a way and then if you play i mean in the order
[67:04]it's in if you play the first five songs and then you get to that you're like well i don't know
[67:09]you know but if you if you were to start out with that song i yeah i could see where you'd say that
[67:13]so maybe the the real move it should never you should never put the best song on the album as
[67:18]number five in the middle right it's either got to go one or at the end or where should that song
[67:22]have gone matt oh that one should have been first yes but i'm glad that they didn't have it for i
[67:27]mean i guess i'm glad that they didn't have it for i mean i guess i'm glad that they didn't have it
[67:28]again side a is unbelievably good to me you know like if i could i i have this album i only listen
[67:36]to side a to be honest with you that is and that is a thought like you don't never have to flip the
[67:42]album over just take the needle move it back take the needle move it back right this album is kind
[67:47]of like i mean that song is kind of like me and my wedding right it's fine but when it looks when
[67:53]it's next to somebody like what my wife looked like you look like absolute garbage i'm going to
[67:58]my wedding photos and looked at him why and my kid said my kid said what's going on with your
[68:03]tuxedo and i was like yeah i don't get what's going on with my tuxedo actually it looks like
[68:08]i am wearing a garbage bag in my wedding photos i have the worst looking tuxedo ever and next to
[68:13]my wife who is absolutely gorgeous at the wedding i look like dog shit straight up dog shit so let
[68:19]me show you going through all the pictures let me show you the one that really shows you what
[68:24]the cut of my suit is and i apologize so this takes a while yeah don't people love
[68:28]looking at other people's wedding photos it's like at least the top five thing people enjoy
[68:32]doing it's definitely the number one podcast topic okay well do you guys not want to see the
[68:35]photos yeah you do you sickos you want to see this you're gonna show look at my pants look at
[68:41]my pants in this photo do you see how they they do look like something that uh like a nba player
[68:47]from the 90s right like they are those pants are huge i think they forgot to tailor them at the
[68:52]bottom they look like jorts they look like they are the biggest pants i've ever seen i look like
[68:58]i look terrible god damn it i'm gonna think about this every time i hear this song just me
[69:04]looking like absolute garbage at my wedding for some reason can't remember what the connection is
[69:08]you're let's be fair you're never gonna listen to that song ever again right yeah
[69:12]i'm too busy listening to albums in the future for this podcast yeah uh listen do you guys ever
[69:18]want to hear a song about a dream about ray charles getting shot well if you do this is for
[69:23]you what these dreams of you this is about a dream he had where ray charles got killed
[69:28]in canada he got shot he got shot got up and kept singing this was the one for me that was not one of
[69:36]my favorites it just felt a little out of place kind of the old blues tune i don't know what did
[69:41]you guys think of this one oh yeah i mean it's it's definitely like kind of kind of pandering to
[69:47]an audience for a reason right i will say if you love an album that sounds deliciously good
[69:56]this is the album for you this is the album for you this is the album for you this is the album for
[69:58]you this is the album it's it's like his other one it just sounds great like they did a great
[70:02]job recording it it's super crystal clear it's production value very very much so and you know
[70:07]what's crazy russell guess who admitted van morrison into the rock and roll hall of fame
[70:13]ray charles ray charles is the guy who who brought him up on stage and they sang a little bit of
[70:21]crazy love together when they first came up which is pretty cool interesting no you're mentioning
[70:26]ray charles and that there was a dream
[70:28]but a dream sequence you know i started wondering you know we've talked about like you know maybe
[70:32]what are your guys dreams you guys ever dreamed before we've talked about that like i was worried
[70:36]about my teeth falling out for many years but do you guys ever think about dreams and the best
[70:41]songs about dreams because i thought we could do a list of the best songs ever about dreams
[70:46]oh a list man
[70:49]sure for another other bit it is a better better countdown
[70:56]oh yeah
[70:58]so we're going to do a list about the best songs ever about dreams and so we've covered a few songs
[71:04]before we talked aerosmith dream on when we covered the best screams ever in the stooges album
[71:10]if you remember that we talked about gasoline dreams by outcast matt i know that was one of
[71:15]your favorite albums and i love that song we also talked dreams by fleetwood mac on rumors if you
[71:20]guys go way back before episode 12 i think even right last time matt talked about how i didn't
[71:27]play his favorite artist and i i let him down because i didn't play i didn't play pearl jam i
[71:32]didn't play that one song with the nonsense syllable yellow lead better yellow lead better
[71:36]so what i'm going to try to do with this time is give each of you guys a song and our listeners a
[71:41]song that's just for you guys something that you can enjoy and so i thought i would start with
[71:45]love letters from russell one of matt's favorite bands one of his favorite artists is tom petty so
[71:50]the first up is running down a dream by tom petty there we go all right
[71:54]you never would have come to me
[71:56]you never would have come to me
[71:57]a dream about being a rocker right running down can you imagine that we haven't done tom petty yet
[72:05]it's criminal right right i think we're coming up on uh god dang this is a good song this was
[72:13]one he played at the uh halftime of the super bowl once he played usually they play like medleys he
[72:18]only played four songs played this song and three other ones can you guys guess what three other
[72:23]songs he played at the super bowl last dance with mary jane
[72:26]no no way no free falling free falling is one of them yep american girl american girl is too so good
[72:35]um let's get to the point let's roll another joke
[72:39]what else would he have played last song was won't back down oh of course yeah yeah that's
[72:49]very super good an interesting thing though matt might know this matt do you know what album that
[72:54]was from which which one running down a dream by tom petty that's a good song that's a good song
[72:56]i don't know 1989 album i believe it's full moon fever is that right i don't know that's the name
[73:05]of it which is very similar to moon dance and i wonder if there's some sort of connection here
[73:09]because fun fact you guys were talking about uh van morrison when he was the singer for the band
[73:15]them right is that the name of it them them yes they yes with them yeah so in 1965 when he was
[73:23]when van morrison was with them he wrote a song called mystic
[73:26]eyes so mystic eyes written by van morrison in 65 in 2006 tom petty covered the song mystic eyes
[73:34]which was written by van morrison in concert and then included that song in the documentary
[73:39]running down a dream just just he had just to close the loop here we will listen to wildflowers
[73:47]at 214 which is absolutely rolling bone but we'll get to that full moon fever is 298 on the list
[73:52]russell nice moon fever and then there's damn the 2027 great
[73:56]which is 231 by tom petty and the heartbreakers so we got a lot of them in the we got three
[74:02]tom petty song or albums in the 200s 2030 might be in our 50s by the time we hit those awesome
[74:09]i can't wait to have a totally heart erection in my 50s next song should i do the jazz one or skip
[74:17]the jazz do it come on i'll just do it and we'll we can delete it if we want so the next song on
[74:21]the list uh is for aaron aaron's a california guy so i figured we'd give him california dreaming by
[74:26]and the papas oh wonderful
[74:28]talk about some tambourine rob up until california love might have been the california
[74:39]state anthem but then california love took over so there was actually rob you were maybe playing
[74:45]it earlier there's actually a flute solo that's pretty famous on this it's played by a man named
[74:49]bud shank you guys ever heard of bud shank i'm not but i like his playing here he's a very famous
[74:55]flautist you were talking about flautist
[74:56]earlier i believe aaron i love talking about flautists and it turns out that this guy goes
[75:01]way back and he actually played the flute on a jazz album from 1955 by a guy named chet baker
[75:07]have you ever heard of chet baker 100 yeah chet baker sings yeah so it turns out that chet baker
[75:12]was actually a big influence on van morrison oh i can hear that yeah yeah can you hear what i'm
[75:18]talking about yeah and so this guy bud shank there was an album called it's called so 1955 the song
[75:26]baker sings and plays with bud shank so bud shank is the flautist back on this album yes so let's go
[75:32]back and check out this song i believe it's called i wish i knew check this out there's the flautist
[75:39]bud shank right and then the horns come in yeah that's can't you immediately hear like where maybe
[75:45]van morrison is getting some of the sound right yes totally so it turns out the flute player that
[75:51]was playing with chet baker back in 55 was the guy who was brought in to play the flute
[75:56]on california dreaming and that's why they both have that kind of flute sound i thought that was
[76:01]crazy you're so you're brilliant so good and that's chet baker playing trumpet on that track
[76:06]and then he would go and like he'd play trumpet and then go straight into singing for playing
[76:09]trumpet it's amazing do you guys do you guys think more people should be named chet like i'd
[76:12]love to have a friend named chet right like we gotta get chets bring back the chats what happened
[76:16]to chet why is that no longer around i got a nephew whose middle name is chetley chetley right
[76:21]chetley truman truman chetley what a great name that is a pretty badass name i'm saying last name
[76:26]is his last name trump that sounds like a trump yeah well i'm not gonna give his name away but uh
[76:31]i'm gonna say it out loud on the air but you gotta start calling that kid chet just please
[76:35]aaron for me just do it i'm gonna try and don't ask if he's got a cousin on the other side don't
[76:40]next song on the list i'm giving another one to matt because i let matt down last week i feel bad
[76:45]so one of his favorite albums he that he says he got to that we skipped over and he said this one
[76:50]should be higher i believe is 1989 by taylor swift is that right matt the best t swift album there is
[76:56]the best songs on that album is wildest dreams another song about dreams there we go
[77:01]of course this has matt's synth sound on it this is the luscious
[77:10]since this is matt's 1989 was better is better than you know she's got her different
[77:14]eras right and it's kind of always between red and 1989 and it's just it's it's not even close
[77:21]it's 1989 next song on the list is another one for matt and aaron and actually rob too rob's
[77:26]a new york guy matt and aaron you've both said you love billy joel hope you love top five billy
[77:31]you guys love river of dreams by billy joel from 93 yes i saw billy joel at wrigley field with my
[77:39]family great pause yes i did a very long pause did we did we do something about long pauses and
[77:46]songs did we do that yes yeah as somebody who wanted to be a low voice singer this was an all
[77:54]time sing-along song
[77:55]uh
[77:56]and right up until the concert i was like i was out on river of dreams for a while in my life
[78:04]because i was like this is cheesy it's just like him you know playing to a certain audience is
[78:10]cheesy and i was like if he played his river of dreams at wrigley field i am not gonna be into it
[78:15]man that song came on you couldn't have found somebody dancing harder than me that song
[78:19]is a bop i can't deny it i love it so good choice russell i think i know why you don't like it
[78:24]it was nominated for record of the year for the first time in a long time and it was nominated for
[78:26]year in 1993 and it lost to i will always love you by whitney houston i mean yeah right like it
[78:33]can't be that we'll always love you can you imagine nothing you have a record i always love
[78:37]you you have a record up and you're like ah good i'm finally gonna get this grammy who am i going
[78:41]against i will always love you shit oh the biggest single of all time the greatest song by the
[78:48]greatest singer yeah the one thing that i couldn't stop thinking about a river of dreams so if you
[78:56]would have that wet look you have a wet look you'd have a wet look and that leads into that song by
[79:01]j cole rob this one's just for you the song's called wet dreams i knew this was gonna be the
[79:05]one you picked for me
[79:06]rob what are your thoughts wet dreams i don't think i've ever had a wet dream in my entire
[79:17]life i remember in health class they'd be like oh yeah wet dreams are this and i was like
[79:20]hey that kind of sounds fun like no work you don't have to do anything
[79:24]oh yeah
[79:26]they're super fun i gotta yeah i just have never had the the tank full enough where i don't think
[79:32]that can happen like it's always good for you then i mean i'm always running on e you know
[79:36]what i mean like i'm always topping off when it hits a quarter that's me rob rob for brian's kids
[79:41]who are listening can you explain what you mean by the tank is too full what does that mean i think
[79:46]it's my vast deference is that what i'm talking about i'm not sure what it does something with
[79:50]salmon i'm pretty sure i read that that song samples a song called impeach the president by
[79:55]the honey drippers that's what i'm talking about
[79:56]so last thing on the list is for you guys and it's for all our listeners we've talked about
[80:02]this once before when we talked about the best soccer songs ever this is the song dreams by beck
[80:07]you guys remember this one it was on 2016 when we said it was a better soccer song
[80:16]than that nonsense mad friend we're talking about oh right stuff from like 94 that doesn't
[80:22]make any sense why it's in minneapolis yeah that one i'll tell you what you know what another
[80:26]song was that was on a fifa soccer game what's that tub thumping by chumba whambo
[80:31]that was on there it's back that back song actually made it to number two on the billboard
[80:37]alternative top 100 did van morrison ever make the alternative top 100 hell no there was no
[80:42]alternative top 100 when you sing it so when it comes to alternative songs that are about dreams
[80:48]who did it better beck did it better russell that was truly a top five list that was incredible list
[80:55]great list excellent list excellent list excellent list
[80:56]i was gonna bail on the i was gonna bail on the jazz one but aaron was talking about jazz so much
[81:02]i had to get it in there i'll tell you what you wrestle listening to you do their list and then
[81:05]listening to me editing when i was talking about manhattan transfer and i kept kept just saying
[81:09]manhattan transfer over and over you're so much better at the list than i am russell it's
[81:12]embarrassing listen let's next up we've got brand new day and this was all about him he was sitting
[81:21]there and he listened to a song on the radio and he goes i don't know who it is i looked at the sky
[81:26]and all of a sudden the song just came through my head i started to write it down and that band that
[81:31]he was listening to the band what band the band which one sounds like the band a little bit with
[81:39]a piano on the background yeah did you guys like it or not no not really i mean compared to like
[81:47]it's kind of filler it's kind of to me it's not i'm not going to give away too much but like this
[81:52]last half of the album it feels like those songs that he felt like he had
[81:56]to make to get over astral weeks right that he needed these songs to try to be
[82:00]what would be played on the radio or other the record executives thought he needed to play that's
[82:05]what it seems like to me on side b i've got to say though this one everyone i do love it's in
[82:10]12th time i think it's the time signature that gets me on this
[82:17]for the clavinet you know i love that clavinet russell yep this one
[82:26]almost feels like circus music doesn't it
[82:29]the most erotic that starts with the harpsichord like the sort of baroque yeah right yeah yeah
[82:35]jeff labies jeff labus is playing the clavinet oh clavinet oh you should go to the very end rob
[82:43]i believe it ends with a triangle clang oh for all like a fucking genius
[82:56]somehow we got to put that together with that song at the end it's time to say i was just gonna
[83:04]say i'm gonna put this over there and then i was like that's too many bits at the end right triangle
[83:09]players mom and dad are so proud like they're the ones who flipped the record over the triangle
[83:14]players mom and dad would always be like well we gotta listen to the second side because we got
[83:17]that triangle at the very end he was the seventh drummer right he was challenged and never moved up
[83:22]yes but but their parents were like well we gotta flip the
[83:26]record over even though it's not as good as side a go get it right yes
[83:33]there we go got it do you think when when the seventh when the seventh percussion player in
[83:41]the high school band challenges do they both play the triangle or do they get to play another
[83:45]percussion instrument they're the symbol people aren't they because usually they're i mean the
[83:48]triangle is seeing a little bit of dexterity right symbols is just banging symbols everybody's
[83:53]looking at you you're the big show you're the reason i remember in band i used to
[83:56]play the trombone and when it would be like 74 beats of rest i remember thinking to myself like
[84:00]what a bunch of suckers playing any other instrument that doesn't have 76 beats of rest right now
[84:04]oh it's so great you know who else is a sucker is someone who buys a booze and
[84:11]cocktail book a vinyl and booze book or whatever my books are called
[84:14]and this this album is in the book booze and vinyl too but both drinks call for green chartreuse i
[84:21]don't want to go pay for a green flavored liquor for fifty dollars no you know so i think it's bull
[84:26]that a book would put make both drinks in the book require that ingredient i hear you
[84:32]we'll still at least one of these drinks just be irish whiskey in a glass like i mean if you're
[84:38]gonna say yeah like a van morse guinness one of them called for green cherries have you guys ever
[84:43]had green cherries before no i didn't even know they existed no that happened to me once that
[84:48]happened to me once when i wasn't able to empty out the tank for a couple weeks green cherries
[84:52]yeah i had some astral weeks and it was tough i had green cherries the doctor said it was the
[84:56]worst case of green cherries he's ever seen and he said you know if you don't do it you can get hurt
[85:00]so you it's medically important that you do it yeah you have to even if it's saturday morning
[85:05]maybe people are sleeping in like it's it has to be done and you know there are consequences if you
[85:10]get those green those green cherries close to the jelly roll too right stuff that's spoiled
[85:15]who will ever understand these delicate things we're talking about so subtle
[85:20]i know our humor really is i mean it's advanced yeah i mean you may say oh
[85:25]well i'm not a fan of green cherries i'm not a fan of green cherries i'm not a fan of green cherries
[85:26]what is this episode 12 no this is 120. all right glad tidings glad tidings
[85:30]listen it's fun people say it's kind of a stacks type sound
[85:37]the problem with the end of this album is the beginning of the album
[85:43]this was famous from a episode of the sopranos i believe
[85:46]or made more famous by the sopranos very catchy tune you guys don't like this as a closer i think
[85:54]i enjoy it i do i do like that's the whole thing it's like it's all enjoyable
[85:58]like there's nothing to dislike it's just that side a is so strong it's so so strong but i gotta
[86:04]say when you listen to those bangers on the side b you're like actually there's some good ones here
[86:08]i really like it folks that's enough let's get into our uh part where we judge the album now
[86:15]and of course guys we're not talking about the album okay let's be very clear okay we couldn't
[86:19]care less what we think of the album that's not important we're looking at the list this is 120
[86:24]on the rolling stones top 500 500 albums this is 120 now should this be at 120 is this like a perfect
[86:34]moon dance okay or whatever he does during the song where he's going
[86:39]you guys know what i'm doing where he's making that navi sound
[86:42]nope avatar
[86:46]but
[86:46]anyway
[86:49]he is this 120 it's a perfect marvelous night for a moon dance what a career and this that would
[86:55]mean you see all those guys where'd they go that would be it's a rolling well toned yeah
[87:01]rolling well toned if this album she hasn't been in much since guardians should have been
[87:06]higher up on the list okay it's easy this i can edit that out in one big swipe
[87:10]um if this would be higher up on the list okay she's great though i've seen drumline so many
[87:16]times rolling but what happened is acting
[87:19]career yeah well you wonder he's just he's working you know he's having another kid like
[87:23]just like in the next couple weeks 12th kid he's he's unmasking people he's jeez i mean he's he's
[87:30]never had green cherries in his life his semen is just out there just flowing yeah he's yeah
[87:35]seven you nailed it aaron you brought it back around brilliant if this album should be higher
[87:41]up okay and a lot of people are saying his other album which could be called into the mystic a lot
[87:44]of people are wondering maybe what it's called they didn't check it okay it's not important what
[87:47]facts are
[87:49]is this better than astral weeks it should be higher up this got a rolling bone or is this
[87:54]should this be lower on the list okay listen the beginning of this album great end of this album
[87:59]great the middle also not that bad but should it be a rolling groan and be shorter be lower on the
[88:05]list and i know what you're thinking lower on the list but you guys are going up by number what a
[88:08]brilliant idea to get worse and worse as the podcast goes on yeah that was aaron's idea actually
[88:13]he mostly came up with that um but this would make this a rolling groan if you think it should be
[88:17]below 120 which is a really good idea i think it's a really good idea i think it's a really good idea
[88:19]which of course is a higher number and we simply don't have time to get into that we're in a big
[88:22]rush so aaron tell me what do you think rolling well-toned rolling bone or rolling groan
[88:25]moon dance i think this album is rolling i'm gonna start with my rating i'm gonna call it
[88:32]rolling well-toned i do i actually don't think it's better than astral weeks i think astral
[88:36]weeks is more adventurous and better constructed start to finish album as a as a whole piece than
[88:43]this one is um but i this album is really good the first half has some some of the greatest
[88:49]songs that we've heard so far and then the second half i think is just like pleasant and nice i think
[88:54]we're getting into a stretch where pleasant and nice seems to be good enough and hopefully that
[88:58]changes like when we get to maggot brain for example uh so i'm but i'm excited i like this
[89:03]one i'm going to call it rolling well-toned did you guys look at any of the tiktoks i sent you
[89:09]this week i never look at your tiktoks not one of this time i didn't i don't want china getting a
[89:14]hold of my phone right you guys didn't look you know i'm you know what the tiktoks i'm sending you
[89:19]of the best fender introductions russell the best fender organ introductions you're gonna have to
[89:23]find a new platform to send your videos on them i i'm telling you guys you're missing out because
[89:28]right after that there was a video about like large ass at the beach and i was like hmm this
[89:32]algorithm has me figured out 100 percent uh russell rolling well-toned rolling bone or
[89:37]rolling grown van morrison moon dance i really enjoyed this album i'm with matt i thought the
[89:43]first half the album was spectacular and i actually i think i like the second half of the album more
[89:49]the songs were fun aaron called them pleasant and nice but if the if the first half the album is an
[89:54]all-timer way up there and the second half is pleasant and nice that's to me that's like an
[89:59]all-time album and so you've got the piano the cymbals the horns even have that triangle at
[90:03]the end rob that triangle it wasn't here you got his voice which is so unique this is such an
[90:14]enjoyable listen you know we've talked about all these albums before and i was like if the first
[90:19]could you tell me this was the greatest ever i can say yes like this to me should be way higher
[90:24]on the list this is super enjoyable i would come back and listen to this again put this on during
[90:28]brunch aaron is it a perfect album for brunch it's oh yes i agree is it a good album if you're
[90:33]having a cocktail hell yes it's a good album for having a cocktail i think you can listen to this
[90:37]a ton of different places in your life and it's super enjoyable super fun list and i think it's
[90:42]rolling bone it should be way higher on the list it's a vibe this is a college vibe album put it
[90:46]on be cool uh matt what do you think rolling well-toned rolling
[90:49]bone or rolling a groan and remember that mini van morrison joke i made earlier very good couldn't
[90:53]say it much better than russell there uh as my thoughts have been well known that the first
[90:59]side of the album unbelievable so i'm russell you brought me around to the second side right like
[91:04]i think it's just that i'm so used to saying oh i'm just gonna i'm done i'm just gonna go back
[91:10]to the beginning right i just start that all over again because these five songs are so great
[91:14]that's where i get caught up i should give the back half a little bit more
[91:19]but um i do think this is and i think i said this during astral weeks that this is a a better album
[91:24]in my opinion and i certainly understand when people like astral weeks better so i'm gonna say
[91:29]absolutely rolling bone should be this would be like a top 20 album for me i had to do my own list
[91:35]yeah i'm with you i would definitely come back and listen to this and i was even thinking like
[91:39]i started thinking about my top five i knew it didn't go up there but i was like
[91:42]could i like this more than jagged little pillar the amy winehouse album i said no
[91:46]but i really enjoyed it like this is a really good album and i think it's a really good album and i
[91:49]this is way up there for me i'm with you matt i think it's great in fact unfortunately you guys
[91:53]are incorrect okay this is a rolling this is a rolling redempt shown okay yeah most most of the
[92:01]albums we cover are the artists throwing off the shackles of everybody telling them what to do and
[92:04]finally making an album that is like artistically his vision this is the exact opposite where he
[92:09]did that and everybody's like boo you suck and he's like okay here's some crap that you'll eat
[92:12]up you little pigs and he was right this is really good this is the slop i want give it to me give it
[92:19]is there a lesson there for our podcast absolutely not okay we will continue to make something that
[92:23]is almost impenetrable okay you cannot pick this up at any other episode beside like three so
[92:27]too bad you guys are all in a special club and you're stuck listening to us that's the way it is
[92:31]next up this is the album and i hope this is the one where he him and his fat friend meet
[92:36]uh frankenstein's monster and they go whoa whoa whoa whoa uh it's elvis costello this year's model
[92:43]i'm a little i'm not gonna be able to make it guys i'm a little sick i won't be i will
[92:49]be around for that one but you're just too lazy to look it up online it's pretty ballsy to be an
[92:55]artist named elvis isn't it i don't like it was that was that not his given name i don't know
[93:01]even if it is i think you gotta change it just like my son george washington june better
[93:07]my daughter edda james no russell come on you gotta have a joke well i was gonna do something
[93:17]about well if you're a cousin of a cousin on the one side technically i'm not impenetrable oh oh
[93:22]i would love to listen to this very good podcast about van morrison i love him i wonder what they
[93:38]talk about what i would love is a little little tuba at the end a little goodbye a little triangle
[93:42]that pulls it out this is too much guys we're starting another bit that we can't
[93:47]well we can we can enjoy the bits anytime rob yes it's true it's time to say goodbye
[93:59]it's so stupid oh yeah very good rob so impressive it was fun podcast now ends with a ding
