Amy Winehouse: Back to Black (2006)

Beck Did It Better Podcast 2006
About this episodeToday we explore the British crooner Amy Winehouse and her turbocharged voice.  We talk about Aaron's allergy and his odd solution to it, Russ is back at the airport, Aaron is talking burritos (again), and Matt is dropping the Billie Eilish knowledge on us. Rob talks drug testing and Easter (finally) and we get a reason to play Ini Kamoze. Russ sends us down a Wurlitzer rabbit hole and we listen to the album that paved the way for Adele.  Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @beckdiditbetter and email us at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com Call or text the BECK LINE at 802 277 BECK

[00:00]all right in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided

[00:05]by rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the

[00:10]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research

[00:16]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it better

[00:21]we are all the way up to album 33 back to black by amy winehouse guys you know it is we are getting

[00:28]close to summertime okay we've already been talking short shorts all right i've been wearing

[00:33]less shirts just in general it's not a big deal but we are ready so we need to keep an eye out

[00:44]found it i mean this is not what he planned to say that was just off the cuff that glass that

[00:48]funny glasses story so i can hardly wait to see what his actual plan story always trying to make

[00:53]aaron mad but he says oh no no

[00:57]then rob goes on and on about the dumb thing aaron's done he laughs oh

[01:02]ho ho

[01:03]rob's always talking smack but aaron never ever claps back

[01:11]we're always trying to make aaron mad he says oh no no

[01:17]aaron shut up

[01:18]aaron you stole the words out of nobody's mouth

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:25]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:26]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:26]i even made his own segment in the middle of the night

[01:26]i even made his own segment in the show

[01:29]but there's nothing

[01:32]there's nothing that gets under his skin

[01:36]but i'll still try to get those insults in

[01:44]i keep making fun of his dumb ass

[01:49]i love it

[01:49]you piece of shit rosie

[01:51]but he just keeps doing his dumb ass

[02:16]you guys can hear it

[02:17]it's just live

[02:17]if you want to hear from guys who chat

[02:21]and then they get

[02:22]i was trying to write clips of bb beat and aaron

[02:24]and i literally fucked too many

[02:25]i'm gonna edit it

[02:26]i couldn't tell if you were telling me

[02:28]why i had to shut up

[02:29]while the song was going

[02:30]or if they were recording

[02:31]i know i have that saved

[02:32]we can play it anytime

[02:33]all right everybody

[02:35]welcome to beck did it better

[02:36]we're talking about the top albums on the roll

[02:38]listen i did in the intro

[02:39]you heard it already

[02:39]but we're all the way up to album 33

[02:41]we're talking about amy winehouse back to black

[02:43]wait am i supposed to play the song again

[02:45]i'm all confused

[02:46]i'm in a loop now

[02:46]i feel like i'm in looper

[02:47]wait here's a younger version of me

[02:50]are you here to kill me

[02:51]wait a minute you want to kiss

[02:53]okay i'll do that too

[02:54]uh

[02:55]is that the verse

[02:56]i remember

[02:56]but why that actually

[02:58]i gotta stop for a second

[02:59]that does not make sense

[03:00]why would the younger version

[03:01]come see the older version of me to kiss

[03:03]that's the best stuff

[03:04]maybe for that sweet mustache you got

[03:06]and how did all the versions get stuck in the dryer

[03:09]is the real question

[03:10]did you say versions or virgins

[03:12]because that gave me an idea

[03:16]for a google search later tonight

[03:17]now here's the thing

[03:18]is that when i was younger

[03:19]was i into dilfs

[03:20]yes i was

[03:21]so i could see where i would be looking for me

[03:22]i think that's okay

[03:23]uh that's dance i like

[03:25]here

[03:25]oh

[03:26]so here's the thing

[03:26]okay you can see it on my tattoo as well

[03:28]uh we've got three guys here

[03:30]who wish this album was called back to snack

[03:32]i'm sorry i didn't have much time to get ready for this show

[03:35]i do love snacks i agree with that

[03:36]you're right rob

[03:37]when you just go dirty right away

[03:39]these shows are so much better

[03:40]you should never try to go clean

[03:42]ever again

[03:43]rob's right

[03:44]scrap that idea

[03:45]all right so

[03:47]now i've got i've got to move around

[03:49]it's hard

[03:49]uh so uh i've got three guys here

[03:52]who wish the album was called back to

[03:53]what am i doing i'm a mess

[03:54]i've got matt minneapolis

[03:56]matt how are you doing

[03:56]excellent rob

[03:58]thanks for having me

[03:59]fun as always to be here

[04:00]love that energy

[04:02]i've got aaron out in california

[04:03]aaron how are you doing

[04:04]i'm great i hope this show is good enough to make my buzzer go

[04:07]but that could be a mess in the garage

[04:08]i don't like it when you say that

[04:11]uh i got russ in minnesota

[04:12]russ how are you doing

[04:13]rob you called on aaron and matt before me

[04:15]what kind of fuckery is this

[04:17]i can't believe you guys made me miss the slick rig gig

[04:20]for this podcast

[04:21]i can't believe you guys made me miss the slick rig gig

[04:26]topical

[04:26]slick rig

[04:27]you guys made me miss it for this podcast

[04:29]laudy laudy

[04:32]we like to party

[04:33]i always love slick rig

[04:36]because i loved his

[04:36]i loved his sound of him rapping

[04:38]it just always sounded so like

[04:40]smooth like he was

[04:41]he didn't even care about it at all

[04:43]and then he was just

[04:43]cause trouble

[04:44]don't bother nobody

[04:45]and then it always seemed to me unfair

[04:47]because he was with dougie fresh

[04:48]and i was like

[04:48]dougie fresh is working like 10 times as hard as slick rick

[04:51]and slick rick is just doing like

[04:52]hey baby buddy

[04:53]i'm here to party

[04:54]and dougie fresh is like

[04:55]oh

[04:55]oh

[04:56]I'm here to party

[04:57]and that was my beatbox

[04:58]and it feels even more appropriate

[05:00]that i didn't try very hard to do a good job

[05:01]all right

[05:02]so everybody is staring at me

[05:03]so that means it is time to move on to our

[05:05]rob are you the main host or not

[05:06]oh yeah i am the main host

[05:08]and i'm here in

[05:08]the greatest city in the world

[05:10]new york city

[05:12]the greatest city in the world

[05:15]listen let's get right to our voicemail

[05:17]kiss my ass

[05:18]dumb shit listeners

[05:19]they can't even tell what we're doing

[05:20]oh no they're back

[05:21]god they're back

[05:22]dumb shits

[05:23]they're just the dumbest of the dumb

[05:24]the dumbest of the dumb

[05:25]dumb shits

[05:26]hey gentlemen

[05:28]this is a close personal relative of aaron's

[05:31]i felt compelled to call in

[05:32]i was texting aaron yesterday

[05:34]trying to identify one of the ingredients

[05:37]in the vietnamese noodle soup pho

[05:39]uh he identified the ingredient as anise

[05:42]uh actually star anise

[05:43]and then he proceeded to tell me that

[05:45]he's allergic to anise

[05:47]uh which

[05:47]what kind of fuckery is this

[05:52]what kind of fuckery is this aaron

[05:54]which means you're allergic to it

[05:55]um so you know just wanted to let you guys know

[05:58]that aaron did tell me that his face gets all red

[06:01]itchy and blotchy anytime he eats anise

[06:03]get a shave beforehand aaron

[06:07]what the fuck

[06:09]gotta watch out for pink eye too

[06:12]so you know while the rest of us are out

[06:17]enjoying anise eating season

[06:19]not worrying about it

[06:20]you know aaron actually cannot eat anise

[06:22]and so

[06:25]aaron's rolling going is completely

[06:26]what the fuckery right now

[06:28]the pregnant pauses are great

[06:33]i've never heard rob be this silent on the podcast

[06:35]there's no way we've ever got 18 seconds without rob

[06:38]i've got to admit i laughed about this for about 10 minutes

[06:42]when i heard it the first time

[06:43]so it's kind of not funny to me anymore

[06:45]and in fact i don't think there is an anise eating season

[06:48]like i i also don't enjoy anise aaron

[06:51]i'm not allergic to it

[06:52]i don't like it

[06:53]but i've always thought maybe i just don't like it

[06:55]i just tried the wrong anise you know

[06:56]because it always to me

[06:57]that anise always tastes like black licorice

[06:59]and i'm wondering if maybe it's prepared a different way

[07:01]maybe i'd like anise more

[07:02]i don't know let's keep listening

[07:03]so i just thought that it was it was good information

[07:05]for you guys to have

[07:06]love the podcast

[07:07]um you know happy to be able to call in

[07:10]and let you know that aaron is unable to eat anise

[07:14]due to an allergy uh which which flares up

[07:17]when he eats anise

[07:18]thanks for everything guys

[07:19]you really need to get that checked out aaron

[07:21]the the the truth is

[07:25]the truth of the matter is i he's the the caller is trying to set me up for this

[07:29]what but i'm gonna go with it

[07:32]eating anise

[07:33]i can eat anise

[07:35]i can't cook it

[07:37]the thing that happened is that we tried cooking food at home

[07:41]yeah and when

[07:42]no kink shaming

[07:43]rule number one

[07:45]that's true we did have a written agreement

[07:47]there would be no kink shaming on this podcast

[07:49]that in my relationship in my marriage we tried anise too

[07:52]and it did turn out that the cook was too big

[07:54]and i was like oh my god

[07:55]so i don't know maybe you need to add some more i don't know

[08:01]olive oil or something maybe that'll help that'll help with your anise

[08:04]is that a possibility

[08:07]yeah the truth of the matter is that

[08:14]aaron it could have been something you were eating with the anise

[08:16]the anise that that gave you the reaction latex or something

[08:20]i'm not yeah i have i it's been a while now since i tried

[08:24]um i've been eating a lot of food lately and i've been eating a lot of food lately

[08:24]um but again uh it was more that in cooking it uh my face turned all red and blotchy and i even had

[08:31]to uh douse my face in milk to try to fix it side note my son thinks this is a hilarious uh story

[08:37]yeah he really thinks that's funny that's that's good you know he's one of our top listeners

[08:44]actually he i think he might have sent in that voicemail actually i cut out that part at the

[08:48]beginning where he said i've actually earned son and again i cannot remember the name of your kid

[08:52]so that's not going to affect uh the joke at all but i'm not going to do that i'm going to do it

[08:54]all but so so uh shut up for a second first of all that is very funny that voicemail is very good

[09:00]second of all i'm not letting you just go by by saying you doused your face in milk and then i'm

[09:05]not going to talk about that so what exactly do you mean you doused your face in milk did you pour

[09:09]milk on your face or did you make a bowl full of milk and then put your face into it or what i think

[09:13]yeah i think i made a bowl full and dunked it so yeah we tried why now why did you do that that's

[09:18]a very dumb thing to do why did you do that because my face felt terrible we tried to make

[09:21]at home i don't which i don't recommend like just just go out

[09:24]to eat pho don't try to make it at home no i and i love to be honest i love pho

[09:29]you know what i mean like i i think it's so good it's delicious you probably don't need to go out

[09:34]to have the anise though do you you can probably just stay at home for that and it depends if it's

[09:40]it's not very good at home you gotta get out yeah well aaron doesn't like aaron doesn't like the

[09:45]pho at home so he gets to pho out about that's where he finds he doesn't like he can't eat anise

[09:50]something about the fumes cooking it in the air made my face all

[09:54]like i got hives and i was i didn't know what the fuck i had i was trying to figure out how to

[09:59]cool the burning sensation on my face so this is maybe this and this anise is spicy is what

[10:05]you're yeah very spicy yeah hey would you say you had some hot anise action

[10:10]next time you better stick with that cheese tortellini on those hikes yeah yeah that would

[10:17]have been a better better move yeah that would have been a much better move you have like a

[10:24]problem when you're out in public i think you should add some anise to those cheese tortellini

[10:29]hikes i mean spice it up a little bit variety is the spice of life i do you know all these very

[10:36]dumb jokes aside which i saw coming at it from about noon today uh and by the way that's the

[10:41]best voicemail we've ever gotten sorry all matt's friends um although i would like to actually i

[10:47]would if one of matt's friends could actually call in and do that same call but with the accent i

[10:54]just let you know aaron can't eat anise he gets all it's all red and blotchy yeah um but i do have

[11:02]to say like i i like the idea that you think that you think that your rashy face is like eating too

[11:07]much salsa and you have to eat milk to like you have to pour milk do you just pour milk over

[11:11]anything that like hurts or what i mean i was at a loss man i didn't know it was i was i didn't

[11:15]know what to do we didn't have anything else in the house like in all reality like water doesn't

[11:19]work like on spicy stuff like if you like you eat wings that are too hot so if you don't drink water

[11:23]you drink milk right

[11:24]is that what we were thinking yeah yeah and if i get a bug bite and it hurts really bad i pour

[11:28]milk all over it like it makes total sense to me i get it do you guys remember that show man versus

[11:33]food where he would eat like the really big meals or the really hot stuff maybe aaron should have a

[11:38]new tv show where it's aaron versus anise and it's just air like every episode is aaron eating anise

[11:44]in a different part of the world i like that different anise after different anise i think

[11:49]that's a great idea and i you know what and i didn't even say anything about being star anise

[11:54]so i'm pretty happy

[11:54]with that i'm pretty proud of myself it's really kudos to everyone involved really thank you i

[11:59]did you ever did you ever show tonight did you ever oh i'm gonna be quiet i'll have to tell rob

[12:04]to delete it anyways move it along i don't know at this point i think it's everybody's about fourth

[12:11]favorite segment rolling going it's it's it's time to see what everybody's got a high high

[12:19]rating rating system we have a lot of segments we need more segments

[12:23]oh

[12:24]yeah all right russell rolling going how's it going with you rolling going things are going

[12:30]great i was actually lucky enough to go on a trip earlier this week to scottsdale for a work thing

[12:36]so i got out of minneapolis for a little bit but as you guys know anytime i go anywhere i have these

[12:41]experiences at the airport that i just have to share with you and get your opinion on is this

[12:47]the worst ever is it the best ever how would you handle things are we doing love or confusion

[12:51]yeah we could call this love or confusion

[12:54]oh

[12:54]whether you love this at the airport or does it leave you confusion at the airport all right

[12:59]we can do that by the way i'm gonna say i don't love anything at the airport i can't think of a

[13:03]single thing that the airport does better than my everyday life like at all like if you say to you

[13:09]where's the worst possible place to have to go to the bathroom i would say the airport is actually

[13:12]right up there where's the worst possible place to get a cinnabon i would say the airport is right

[13:16]up there where's the worst possible place to go with like your family and kids the airport is

[13:21]right up there like the airport does can you guys think of anything the airport does well

[13:24]big beers man flies here's big shots yeah big best place to catch a flight

[13:31]no i don't think so because i why are you going to the airport flying somewhere i've flown private

[13:38]before and it was way better you just walked out on the plane and got on it oh now we're talking oh

[13:42]okay i forgot you live in new york we all forgot you and you're an american record holder

[13:48]but flying private is also what i call eating anise so that's

[13:52]and that's it for that joke no more okay more potato potato and i'm in charge russell i'm sorry

[13:59]to interrupt you go ahead it's all good it's all good so the first thing i started wondering is

[14:03]sometimes you see the tsa and they're always the same type looking nice right a lot of them it's

[14:07]kind of like a schlubby looking dude semi balding he's probably wearing a knee brace you don't really

[14:12]know why he needs the knee brace when he's just sitting on the stool the whole time they're all

[14:17]it's always they're taking it very seriously and i appreciate that they're looking out for our safety

[14:22]and they're always the same type looking people right a lot of them it's kind of like a schlubby

[14:22]looking dude semi balding he's probably wearing a knee brace you don't really know why he needs the knee

[14:22]but i think i came across the person with the worst job at the airport and i want to see what

[14:27]you guys think of this guy at the airport so now whenever you walk in and you're going and you're

[14:32]waiting in line to go through security a lot of times now there's the kind of the drug sniffing

[14:37]or bomb sniffing dog right they're walking the dog behind you as you're walking through a certain

[14:42]point and i realized there's this one person whose job is literally just to wave their arm

[14:48]and constantly say straight through don't stop straight through

[14:52]don't stop and literally their only job for eight hours is to tell you to walk straight and don't

[14:58]stop when the dog runs behind you could there be a worse job in the world than to literally just

[15:03]wave your arm and yell straight through don't stop for eight straight hours i would say that

[15:10]dog's job is probably worse it's probably just robbie be me to it it's sniffing it's sniffing

[15:15]anise all day long i mean that's all i can smell i gotta say i think i like sniffing yeah maybe

[15:19]that is what the dog enjoys i i do think you know the

[15:22]think about the lines at the airport that is a terrible job i would say any job at the airport

[15:26]again the airport is the worst version of anything that exists in real life it's just terrible any job

[15:31]there is terrible i think that but i do get mad first of all my gag at the airport of course with

[15:36]my girls is that i'm a guy who loves lines that's the bit i do and so when i see a long line i go

[15:41]yes and i go really loud yes a line and then when the line turns 180 degrees and you're still in a

[15:47]line i go it's another line and my girls are so embarrassed they hate it

[15:51]and then the other thing i don't like is that there's they're always trying to gaslight me

[15:56]at the airport and they always are like take your id out this isn't going fast because people don't

[16:01]have their ids out i'm like no actually it's not going fast because we have 150 fucking people in

[16:05]this line and you have two windows open and all these x-ray machines are closed you could open

[16:10]those all up and we'd go much faster but no it's the fact i gotta take up my wallet take out my id

[16:15]shut up you're the problem not me and i get mad i get like legitimately mad and every time i say

[16:20]i go they're gaslighted but she's like yes yes i know just call like jenny's the one calming me

[16:24]down for once and then there's the one guy who's always being a real anus and he takes forever to

[16:28]check your bag when it's going through the the detector he does what does he need eight minutes

[16:33]to check the bag for either open the shit up or send it through what are we doing here have you

[16:39]ever flown with uh uh creatine like a supplement it's a white powder no i lifted 752 pounds on my

[16:46]last week without any supplements i can tell you the

[16:49]anytime i fly with jenny she always has like 10 bags full of powder that's not labeled and we get

[16:55]stopped every single fucking time wait why isn't she just bringing a new container why is she why

[17:00]she got it i don't know but she puts in a bag and then jenny of course is a very she's very quick to

[17:04]anger like at the airport there's been a number of times where amelia will do an impression of

[17:09]jenny at the airport where she says ma'am do you need to step aside and cool down because that's

[17:12]what they always say to her at the airport she's always yelling at people i got one so the last

[17:16]time it was a while ago but there was one time when i was in front of the airport and i was like

[17:19]in front of a guy's in front of me right so you go and it's always a race like you gotta get that

[17:23]first bin and get your bin on the on the conveyor to get it through right like it's just a race so

[17:30]when they first had that out where you get like the four stalls right and the thing just comes

[17:33]and it's okay you go here so you go there well they've got like the the people were helping like

[17:37]put the the tsa guys were grabbing the bins setting them up for you right so this guy

[17:43]thought he should be next right and like the the guy the tsa guy put it for another guy over

[17:49]and so the guy who thought that he should have had the bin it should have been his turn was like

[17:53]hey it's my turn and the tsa guy's like you know just we're all getting through this we'll we'll

[17:58]get through you know what but no i gotta you know like he just started causing this ruckus for like

[18:03]five minutes so then the tsa guy is bored he takes the next bin sets it in front of me so now

[18:07]he purposely didn't give it to this guy okay so keep hold on hold on so then he finally gets to

[18:13]this guy and this guy's like man that's just not right that's you know like you just you know so

[18:17]he starts giving the tsa guy crap

[18:19]right and so we get through the line and we start going through and everybody's getting their stuff

[18:25]through who do you think's been got flagged for a check yeah so that guy because he caused a

[18:32]problem the tsa guy instantly just told his buddy like oh we're checking this guy so now this guy

[18:37]he had to open up his bag and everything so just keep your mouth shut and walk through and just

[18:41]say yes sir no sir yes ma'am no ma'am get through that thing as fast as possible and for god's sakes

[18:46]don't be a cheap bastard rob and just get the tsa pre

[18:49]check get the clear you're in and out in literally 13 seconds bro well you know like 100 bucks a year

[18:55]you know you know that when i'm going there i'm going delta sky club every time now yeah it's the

[18:59]pay for that yeah i get absolutely hammered when i fly now just right just fall over drunk with my

[19:05]two kids and a dog i'm like and i eat a ton of hot dogs so yeah so that also helps so that i can

[19:13]go shit my brains out and probably the best bathrooms in the whole world with my wide stance

[19:18]i do appreciate that the tsa people have to be hollering at people to keep moving moving people

[19:23]along a lot of people are not well versed in being at the airport they don't know what they're doing

[19:27]i get that but sometimes the tsa people use no common sense right the one thing that really

[19:33]bothered me this time through is they're running the dogs behind these people and there's about

[19:38]eight kids coming up that are between the ages of you know three and five very young kids and a few

[19:45]of these kids are terrified of the dogs like they're

[19:47]panicking yeah they're yelling they're hollering they're like freaking out yeah and they can't just

[19:53]move the dog away for like a eight seconds they've still gotta run that stupid that fat man with the

[19:59]balding head and the knee brace has still gotta run the dog behind that kid like that kid's not

[20:04]bringing anything in in that power rangers backpack like what are we doing here russell

[20:10]you're gonna be flagged for the rest of your life this is going out in the ether you're gonna be

[20:13]flagged for the rest of your life i don't care yeah was this at msp or in scottsdale russell

[20:17]scottsdale is where they wouldn't call the dogs off when the kids were freaking out

[20:22]or phoenix okay yeah i was at msp once when the drug dog was there and it was very

[20:27]it was just over the top they were they were waiting for flights from california

[20:32]standing at the gates where the flights from california were coming in then hassling people

[20:35]about drugs and that whole thing is just silly that's just a lot of people with

[20:39]the who don't know what's important in life but beyond the beyond the drugs though there was one

[20:44]other thing i had to run by you guys because i always want to know what you guys think the

[20:47]right the right way to handle this is how would you ever do this on a plane what are your thoughts

[20:53]about people who bring hot food onto a plane not not a bag of chips they bring a burger on the

[21:00]plane and sit next to you on the plane with hot food what are your thoughts the stinky food i

[21:04]think that's whack but i think it's a power move so go for it let's bring bring your bring your

[21:09]tuna sub that you bought at jersey mike's and in terminal c2 or whatever go for it power move

[21:17]stink up the whole plane those people should be executed period they should be killed we're all

[21:22]in this enclosure it smells it smells terrible and right away they open up like they open up

[21:28]like a giant like thing of chinese food and i'm like really like i don't even mind the smell that

[21:32]much but you're really gonna do like you that's what you need to eat right now you can't just have

[21:35]like ritz crackers and spring cheese just in the yeah and my face love red and splotchy i'm pouring

[21:41]milk all over my face i'm yelling my anise anise i always wish i'm the one that did it because we

[21:47]peanut butter banana sandwiches which are delicious but then you're eating your pb and b

[21:50]and somebody's having a big mac and you're like man i don't know that big mac smells pretty good

[21:55]we did that once where he brought peanut butter sandwiches and the woman next to us goes

[21:58]my grandson is allergic to peanut butter you should not bring those and of course jenny

[22:05]does not handle this as well as maybe and i love my wife i do but jenny goes is your kid on this

[22:13]plane and the lady did say no he's not jay goes what the hell

[22:16]is the problem that who cares i'm gonna eat this peanut butter sandwich good for jenny

[22:20]good for jenny while i'm like trying to crawl into my seat somehow like backwards

[22:25]kiss my anise yeah no hot food hot food on the plane is very bad jenny would always do the real

[22:31]power move to me where we had two young kids and jenny every time 30 seconds before we'd board the

[22:36]plane would go get the biggest hottest coffee she could probably possibly get and that way

[22:42]i would have to do everything on the plane because jenny would be like i can't do anything i have a

[22:46]coffee i'm putting the bags up because this was back when the kids had like car seats we'd bring

[22:52]car seats on the plane to plug it in because you could strap them in then and they would sleep

[22:56]otherwise the kids would just roam around the plane which is always a problem so i had to do

[23:00]everything so people didn't get the scalding and jenny would sit by the way we are flying in this

[23:04]next week going down to see my parents jenny bought herself a first class ticket so i don't

[23:09]know what to say to that but i got to admit when i'm sitting with my kids it's like i'm in first

[23:13]class because i just sit in the middle and i take up both seats

[23:16]so you so she's sitting first class and you and your two kids sitting back

[23:20]yeah exactly wow yeah well i i she texted me and i was like well what am i gonna say so i just

[23:26]texted back i was like you deserve it i mean that's the only only reasonable answer man

[23:32]yeah but would she buy you all first class ticket oh yeah no she would definitely do that

[23:37]in a heartbeat if i let her oh you just say no no yeah if trust me if spending money on

[23:42]dumb things is cool call jenny miles davis because she's that's her favorite shit

[23:46]she loves it aaron texted us and he said guys my rolling going is so good this week get ready to

[23:52]and he said you guys can riff on it like he's never fucking heard the podcast before

[23:56]like he's just gonna tell the story we're gonna be like okay man rolling going i could not believe

[24:01]so i texted back no thanks i was like i don't know what i mean you edited the last one you

[24:05]know what the podcast sounds like now although most of his edits literally were you said in

[24:09]the podcast you were going to edit it out i don't think you should i was like yeah i know that's the

[24:14]joke

[24:16]i was playing along yeah well i wanted to give you guys a chance to prepare because i thought

[24:21]rob you specifically might have too many examples of what i'm about to talk about and i wanted you

[24:26]to be able to focus on which ones are the best okay but the first thing i have to say is that

[24:30]i ate a burrito this week is the first burrito i've had in the entire pandemic i don't know why

[24:37]i i don't know why i never had a burrito this entire but we've been doing takeout once a week

[24:40]i don't know why i never chose burritos a burrito is so satisfying i'm really i encourage all of our

[24:46]go out get yourself a burrito treat yourself one day it's really worth the worth the effort

[24:50]especially in the bay area right like that's like burrito central isn't it oh yeah man there's right

[24:55]i mean there's there's all the regional burrito styles uh and the funny thing was i ended up going

[25:00]with the veggie burrito because the guy at the taco spot was like the veggie burrito is my favorite

[25:04]and i said yes and the great thing was you feel way better eating three pounds of vegetables than

[25:08]you do eating three pounds of barbacoa so i i felt okay about that i was happy with how that went

[25:13]i'm 40 years old and i still i'm 40 years

[25:16]old and i still constantly like i'm surprised by how i feel after i eat garbage like i'm still

[25:21]eating i'm still drinking a ton of milk and afterwards i'm like oh god i feel sick why would

[25:25]i do this aaron do dump or marry three pounds of barbacoa three pounds of vegetables or three pounds

[25:31]of anise what would you do what would you dump and what would you do i gotta i gotta marry the

[25:37]vegetables do the barbacoa and dump the anise that's not even a question that's that's quick

[25:41]all day no doubt that's the answer i think i think dumping is what the anise

[25:45]is for i mean if it works right that's true i with my burrito i was happy as they say i was

[25:54]as happy as a pig in slop which leads me into my real rolling going which is that we have a friend

[26:01]who moved into the neighborhood and they stopped by for some driveway beers the other night and

[26:05]they left their uh bag while they were here and so we we walked over and took the bag back to him on

[26:11]wednesday and we were heading out for for a walk during work and

[26:15]he said oh are you going up to see the pigs and we said wait oh like oh like pig statues or

[26:21]something and he was like no there's a live there's a real pig that lives in this yard at

[26:25]this house up here at the corner of uh florence and proctor and we're like are you serious so we

[26:30]walked up there and sure enough so i i live in oakland but i live in a very i'm actually nice

[26:35]to my neighbors i would never call them pigs and then look at them through the window like i think

[26:38]that's really bad i live in a very residential neighborhood people in the bay area do have

[26:44]chickens that's not out of that's not uncommon at all for people have chickens but we went up

[26:49]there and sure enough there is a pig sleeping in the yard of this house and it's a it's a nice

[26:55]house it's probably a million and a half dollar house the pig's just laying a beautiful pig i've

[27:00]never seen markings like this on a pig really pretty just laying out in the yard in the sun

[27:05]taking a nap i've never seen anything like it so my question to you guys is what are some weird

[27:10]things that you've seen in in your neighborhood this can i'm going to take this a little bit

[27:14]different direction but when you talk about the pig having the the pig as a pet one thing i've

[27:20]realized now is a lot of people have indoor rabbits as pets did you guys know that yep i have

[27:26]some i have some a niece and nephew that do yeah i i went out with a woman and she had a couple kids

[27:32]and one of their kids they decided they were going to take like the school rabbit home and keep it as

[27:36]a pet yeah and when she was telling me about this i was like you got to be shitting me you have the

[27:40]rabbit in your house and he's probably shitting yeah and it didn't go well after that i was gonna

[27:46]say how did that day turn out russ when you ask your kids has a pet you go you gotta be shitting

[27:50]me well it was going well take care of another living thing and care about it what the fuck

[27:55]well but like an indoor rabbit that just seems like a bizarre thing but that's like a typical

[27:59]pet now as people have indoor rabbits right yeah that's crazy matt big big furry things you can

[28:05]hug and then they'll hug you back there's no way matt allows an indoor rabbit in his house oh no

[28:10]those things shit everywhere can you imagine those i mean like oh no i've got a cat that you

[28:17]know i care a lot i just don't want to do any more kitty litter anymore that's like in a little box

[28:22]and it actually goes where it's supposed to be made in a rabbit just out running around in your

[28:25]house yikes no i don't know russ i i i you're not you're not a pet guy are you russell like did you

[28:32]have pets growing up and stuff dude i can't even take care of a plant how am i supposed to take

[28:35]care of a pet there's a reason i'm still single here oh i thought you were raising that plant that

[28:40]was

[28:40]in your gutter for a while i thought that was like your hand-fed plant that you were taking

[28:43]care of i was fertilizing it until matt cut it down i don't know if it's a strange thing but

[28:48]it's just you know people like keep things out too long or they they think something's

[28:55]cool but really everybody else you can you know is just like get that fucking thing out of here

[29:00]like there's a there's a neighbor around the block who's got his like 1978 santa claus uh

[29:07]display that it's still like the plastic you know that and it's all

[29:10]fading everything it's like still outside it's march right now and things like that and you're

[29:15]like why did why do you only have one thing in your yard you need a dozen right and why does it

[29:20]not like yeah blow around this is very small and quaint you're so stupid matt rolling going how's

[29:26]it going with you oh i'll try to speed through this here we're getting the speed it up sign so

[29:30]we'll uh see what i got um i i just got notes tonight yeah i want to get going i don't want

[29:39]to get i don't want to get the fingers

[29:40]shaked at me so let's see i did a lot of things since we last talked um i need to do i watched

[29:46]the the full four seasons of hip-hop evolution which if anybody has any any musical uh you know

[29:56]just like the the smallest little tiniest bit of uh you know love of music you have to watch this

[30:03]it is absolutely fascinating so where can somebody watch this um oh wait no i mean

[30:10]netflix you know so you can watch on netflix uh i told joe i'd get a few drops in here

[30:16]by someone famous are we talking like a ken burns or what's the who's producing this some dude i

[30:22]don't i don't remember the guy's name i probably should know it but the guy does a very good job

[30:26]of interviewing like every single uh rapper that has ever been somewhat influential and he goes

[30:33]deep and he finds like he talks like the very first hip-hop party ever in new york and rosie

[30:38]probably knows what these places are but i don't know if he's ever been in a hip-hop party

[30:40]but you know kind of how it goes from new york and then it goes out to la and back to new york

[30:43]and then down south and then to detroit and then you know he does a great job of it and i think it

[30:49]started out as like a one season thing and then it won a peabody award that's how i found out about

[30:54]it so you're a peabody expert we are yeah we have a peabody expert on so i that's what i just said

[31:00]here don't copy what i say ever again and i also noticed by the way aaron you're not laughing at

[31:04]my jokes as much you need to pick that shit up stop saying what i'm saying and start laughing at

[31:07]my jokes more yeah i've noticed that too there's a lot of people who are laughing at my jokes

[31:10]people not laughing at your jokes as much matt you're matt start laughing what the fuck no matt

[31:16]doesn't laugh at the jokes trust me i edit this i can tell when matt laughs uh matt so you're the

[31:21]peabody expert so keep going yeah thanks i appreciate it there's two apologies i need

[31:27]so we asked on miles davis the somebody said well where do we see jazz in um you know everyday life

[31:33]now or music now and our my dumb ass you know didn't realize and you know like raheem

[31:40]from eric and raheem who will come up on i don't know somewhere in the late uh you know before we

[31:46]get to 100 he's got an album and he said look i played jazz all growing up all i do when i'm doing

[31:52]my rhymes is trying to feel i feel i'm feeling like i'm playing jazz music when i you know that's

[31:58]all i hear in my head is jazz music and i'm just trying to go along with the rhythm and the rhyme

[32:02]of the jazz music so that's my you know for not understanding that realizing that i mean that's

[32:07]just dumb of us to not realize that that's kind of

[32:10]apologize for our listeners apologize hold on i got another apology you're talking about the

[32:15]connection between hip-hop and jazz you're saying that they're they're very yeah yeah yeah you know

[32:20]and i think that too man and i think it was me who was kind of talking about all the you know

[32:24]there's all these samples all over the place and again my dumb ass ignorant didn't realize that the

[32:29]whole hip-hop culture is based off of sampling that's the whole that's the where the whole thing

[32:36]came from it's like the uh you know it's just it's

[32:40]the lifeblood of the hip-hop world right like they started by finding these old albums and

[32:44]kind of changing them and of all these machines and everything and so i uh again it's ignorant

[32:52]of us not to realize where that's at you know i think i was like oh geez why they always sample

[32:56]that's where they get all of their beats and um it's just it's crazy to hear the stories in that

[33:01]that uh docuseries about how these guys would go to like these record sales at these hotels

[33:08]like once a month i think it's a

[33:10]is it the roosevelt in new york or something like that and it would open up at eight o'clock

[33:15]and they would talk like guys would get so crazy that one of them would go and he'd purposely he

[33:20]lived in new york but he'd get a room in the hotel for the night before and purposely get up at five

[33:24]o'clock to get down there while everybody's setting up and get in there early and stuff

[33:28]and they talk about like you'd go there and you'd see every major uh beat maker what's the right

[33:37]term rosie dj you know

[33:40]producer yeah producer you know these producers you know every single one of them was in there so

[33:44]they had all these old pictures of you've got like q-tip next to all these other guys and it's like

[33:49]holy cow you know this that was the place to be yeah well but yeah but think about it because

[33:53]their goal was to find records that other people didn't know about right to find those unique beats

[33:58]yep and so they were talking yeah and so i think it you know again uh i i need an actual apology

[34:06]i'm don't play the clip rob because it was our ignorant i don't want to play the clip rob

[34:10]my ignorant ass for not understanding how that worked you know but watching that i understand a

[34:14]lot more peabody award i went and uh you know realized that um childish gambino we talked

[34:19]about him last episode or two episodes last episode and so been getting into childish gambino

[34:25]uh found the song this is america and watch the video for the first time i am super late to this

[34:32]um phenomena i guess you could call it but anybody who has not seen the video go watch it

[34:38]that should win a peabody award

[34:40]by itself let alone uh you know everything else that that guy does so childish gambino

[34:45]he's a genius um what else is full on repenting um and then finally i my wife sarah found this

[34:55]clip and rob we got to get uh over to the clip of i don't know just why just 51 seconds i think

[35:00]it was on jimmy kimmel show but you got to just hear the story billy eilish and uh one of her

[35:04]favorite famous songs and how and how uh it was constructed so let's just just listen

[35:10]to this clip here this is a crosswalk what is crosswalk so we were we've toured australia a

[35:15]couple times which is really beautiful and um in sydney and melbourne when you stand at a street

[35:19]light and you press the the button all the time oh yeah i mean so you press it over and over yeah

[35:23]and you hear so when you're on a street corner in australia you press the button and then when it

[35:28]when the walk sign turns on you hear this like rhythmic sound that i that i love and that billy

[35:33]loved and so we recorded it and it sounds like this

[35:40]it's got like it's it's got it like uh like australia you hear that i do like that song

[35:44]sounds like robin all right so then you use that for the song bad guy yeah the thing people think

[35:49]are hi-hats and bad guy is actually just that

[35:51]here's the how about that hold up what does he that doesn't sound anything like a hi-hat

[36:04]rob you're gonna have to i don't know hi-hat sound he's full of shit if you if you watch the

[36:08]clip if you watch the clip so you're

[36:10]your buddy who's the drummer your buddy is the quest love is the drummer for they they show him

[36:16]and he is like his mind is blown because all of a sudden he's like whoa no way you know how'd you

[36:21]get so it kind of just goes back to the whole sampling thing like you just find you find

[36:24]i'm wrong i i already admit i'm wrong if he's down with that i'm down with it

[36:29]yeah this dumb podcast has got me watching and listening to so many dumb things that i would

[36:34]never normally care about and now i'm like making all these connections oh my god it's terrible

[36:40]it's like one of those it's like the stuff we learned about in school like music's everywhere

[36:43]right like if you just listen that's awesome i never learned that in school aaron that sounds

[36:47]like you went to some hippie school music is everywhere i never once had a teacher say that

[36:52]to me you went to the wrong school that's all i got on my list rob i did go to the wrong school

[36:57]that was our motto uh blank high school the wrong school you brought up you rolling going how's it

[37:04]going did you uh do anything exciting this weekend i will tell you what we better get that that my

[37:10]my power lifting did go pretty well i have to say but more importantly you dumb shits i told you

[37:15]like uh i told you like a week ago or no like three weeks ago i was like guys we need to keep

[37:20]track of when we're gonna have an episode coming out around easter and all i got in replies in the

[37:25]texts were oh it's not a big deal don't worry about it we don't care we did this let's wait

[37:30]till later well guess what now we fucking missed it by like a week this episode's coming out way

[37:34]after and now we have to talk about easter so guess what this is someone was a bad

[37:40]episode around easter and you guys were like no don't worry about easter it's not a big deal well

[37:57]guess what now we missed it this this is coming out like two weeks after easter this is a disaster

[38:01]you guys still don't understand what i'm talking about do you no clue i don't even know when easter

[38:06]is i'm not gonna lie right i didn't know it was

[38:09]like next week or something the other yes not this weekend not this week my next the only reason i

[38:14]knew that is like yeah why is we why why is it important it's because we got to talk about oh

[38:19]my god we're talking about things on the podcast that people want to like talk about okay i know

[38:24]you guys want to talk about easter weird neighborhood stuff or like clicking sounds

[38:28]out of thing we other people are talking about easter we need to be in like the mind space we

[38:33]should be doing this like they just had you know what do you know what podcast you're you're on

[38:37]are you sure you're yes i do unfortunately

[38:39]that's a problem and that's why i'm going to ask you guys now by the way easter is such a pain in

[38:43]the ass for parents i just want to say that right now once again i understand when my parents were

[38:46]always so mad when i was growing up do you know how many fucking times i've bought plastic eggs

[38:50]what the hell is my problem how can i not get my shit together and just save the plastic eggs from

[38:55]year to year every year i'm buying like 50 plastic eggs and then you have to put like a star toys

[39:00]anyway we were playing we were playing with plastic toys on the plastic eggs on the beach

[39:04]last weekend like they just end up as santos usually they just end up aaron's like turtles

[39:09]he's like these plastic eggs oops i guess that one broke too daddy that's twisty turtles swimming

[39:18]upside down yeah don't worry about that yeah i was gonna ask you guys though easter what is your

[39:22]favorite easter candy and everybody shut up because the answer is cadbury eggs cadbury eggs are by far

[39:28]the best candy gross i hands down what the fuck russell gross when i go to a duane reed now i

[39:34]literally gain like 10 pounds during easter because every time i go i'm like oh it's just one little

[39:38]egg and like an egg to me

[39:39]sounds healthy i think it's because we grew up in the time where the for some reason people were

[39:43]paying money to have egg ads on tv remember that egg ad where they're like eggs they're good for

[39:47]you and i was like the incredible edible egg cadbury egg and i'm like yum yum and then you

[39:53]actually think about what's in it it's just sugar on top of sugar on top of sugar russell what is

[39:56]your favorite easter candy if you don't like eggs i'm not a huge easter candy guy i'll go for one of

[40:02]the dark chocolate chocolate bunnies or some of the worst easter candy has to be the peeps

[40:07]like i know little kids love peeps but as an

[40:09]adult if you can eat more than half a peep you've got you deserve to be put in a padded room there

[40:15]is something wrong with you if you're an adult and you can eat more than one peep right russell's

[40:20]nightmare somebody get on the plane next to him and eat opening up a hot peep that smells really

[40:25]bad then eats it right in front of russell's russell's just going crazy your your answer

[40:28]for your favorite easter candy russell let's be clear about this is just dark chocolate bunnies

[40:33]i'm gonna take i'm gonna i'm gonna switch it up a little bit i'm gonna take the little eggs

[40:36]that are like the nestle crunch eggs so it's a little chocolate bunny and i'm gonna take the

[40:39]egg with a little bit of a little bit of crunch in there now aaron i'm sure you like black jelly

[40:45]beans because you know how much you love anise but what what is your favorite um uh rob you already

[40:50]said cadbury egg i would have to say the reese's peanut butter egg that would be my my favorite

[40:54]that's not a cadbury egg it's it's so good isn't it it's it's it's the perfect size incredibly hot

[41:00]take on reese's this like might get me kicked off the podcast a reese's peanut butter cup is the

[41:09]second one is terrible there's too much peanut butter and chocolate like if you get if you get

[41:15]the little like if you go get the reese's and there's two peanut butter cups in there the first

[41:20]one is the greatest thing ever but the second one is just like too rich it's terrible like they should

[41:25]only sell those in things of one not packs of two you're happy during halloween where you're getting

[41:29]the onesies of them you're getting lucy's that's why the egg is perfect they don't sell the eggs

[41:34]and twos do they you can't do two of those in a row it's matt what's your taste what's your east i like to

[41:39]eat peanut butter eggs and i'll eat as many of those as i get my hands on i don't know what you're

[41:43]talking about russell i don't get that take that's i'll just i'll yeah i'll binge those but then i

[41:50]also like the little malted milk balls that you know really are eggs the robin's eggs the robin's

[41:55]eggs you know i'll take some of those around easter as well so yeah i'll tell you what i also

[42:00]like jelly beans it turns out i like almost every easter candy surprise i know what you're talking

[42:05]about why are we talking about easter again favorite nobody knows guys good luck editing this

[42:09]because rob's gonna try to to segue but we've not specifically congratulated rob for setting an

[42:16]american record in the squat this past weekend and you can edit it out if you want but i'm proud

[42:21]of you as fuck congratulations rob rob for our listeners give us the third the third high level

[42:27]overview of what what did you accomplish this weekend other than other than that whole anise

[42:31]yeah my anise was my anise came like inside out after doing this by the way but uh the uh i squatted

[42:39]one pounds which is a new american record for my age that's so much weight holy shit

[42:44]well it's i mean if you do like by body weight it's actually not that much for me but are you

[42:49]are you drug tested or are there other people that are not tested that can lift more or not

[42:54]so i did get drug tested after this so a guy took me back at the first time ever so a guy took me

[42:59]back in the bathroom and he was like well now i have to watch you pee right and so first of all

[43:04]it's hard to pee when you're just have a full erection like you know how it is like you have

[43:08]to like calm it down first

[43:09]first of all i was like okay you know me and this guy in the bathroom i gotta calm down a little bit

[43:15]but then i literally like i had trouble peeing and i had been drinking water because i was like i bet

[43:20]i am gonna get drug tested i've been drinking water like crazy getting ready for this and not

[43:25]only could i not pee with this guy watching me first of all i had to like bring my singlet down

[43:29]and it was like tugging up like under like onto my taint kind of and i think that was like stopping

[43:34]it was like kinking the hose you know what i mean but then i want to remind you guys you asked about

[43:39]this and then i had to like bring my singlet down and it was like tugging up like under like onto my

[43:39]taint and then there were like four guys who came in the bathroom while i was waiting and of course

[43:46]i'm so stressed out i'm trying to pee like everybody's waiting everybody wants to go home

[43:49]i can hear them giving out the awards and they have to like wait for me because i'm trying to

[43:53]piss into this well and they're coming they're coming into the bathroom and you're the famous

[43:56]guy who just set the record too exactly yeah exactly and meanwhile you can imagine how large

[44:01]your penis is after doing something like that and you have to wear briefs during this so it's all

[44:05]like stuffed in there and it's it's going full bird's nest and then you're like oh my god i'm

[44:09]every single guy that came in had the strongest stream of urine you've ever heard in your entire

[44:17]life like it was humiliating like four guys in a row they'd come in and you would think they're

[44:22]just like horses it sounded like they were taking like liters of smart water and just dumping them

[44:27]into the toilet i couldn't believe it it sounded like they were filling a child's swimming pool

[44:32]outside and meanwhile i was like trying to dribble some out like it was just so it was absolutely

[44:39]humiliating so did eventually you provide the sample yeah of course i mean yeah well i get it

[44:45]have you gotten your results back yet do we know if this is a legit lift or no they have not but i

[44:50]will say this if i am on steroids like if i'm taking steroids i need to find new steroids like

[44:55]whatever steroids i'm taking for the grape nuts and steroids they are not very good

[44:58]sir you tested incredibly high for cadbury eggs

[45:03]is that illegal no it's just disgusting we

[45:09]wanted to tell you we're worried actually worried about your health your nougat concentration is

[45:13]10 parts per milliliter yeah exactly all right so let's get into everybody's least favorite segment

[45:20]by the way i have listened to this segment a number of times when i'm editing and i realize

[45:24]it is terrible so i'm going from three things to the album to now it is going to be three sentences

[45:28]about the album i'm shorting it down eventually this will get cut out but we're talking about

[45:33]back to black so i just want to give you three sentences as an update on this album as an update

[45:37]you fucking idiot rob as a overview of this album i'm going to give you three sentences as an update

[45:39]of the album basically this whole thing is about her she broke up with this guy who eventually

[45:44]became her husband uh and this was written right after that breakup and so a lot of it is just her

[45:48]heartbreak uh her she had an album she only had two albums right amy winehouse obviously a tragic

[45:54]figure she only had two album the first album was called frank which just a great i i love that name

[46:00]for an album i think it's great but if you listen to it it was very very like jazz oriented her

[46:05]playing guitar jazz chords on guitar and kind of singing you know kind of elephant

[46:09]fitzgerald over top of it sounds great i love the sound of it but this album was so big that they

[46:15]actually credit this for kind of a soul explosion in um britain including uh adele which is probably

[46:21]the most famous example all right that was three sentences how dare you i see you over there counting

[46:28]on your fingers count count this finger right here it's stubby little finger there look at that thing

[46:35]my thumb out oh it hurts my hands a bit look at that

[46:39]though i do have you know what i've been really thinking about this since that episode

[46:42]this is what it looked like now when i take this middle finger and i put it down this is what it

[46:47]looked like me trying to be into that cup except it's more like this more pinky and the guy's like

[46:53]you can't be in this cup that's pathetic and i was like you normally it works i'm just nervous

[46:57]right now i'm trying some new medication you know that'll be uh so let's talk about the album let's

[47:09]it's another short one right only like what 34 minutes that's what the guy at my drug test said

[47:14]i'm really not very professional he was commenting he's like i know you're not

[47:24]on steroids because your dick is very short but your balls are so big like it doesn't make any

[47:28]sense

[47:28]rehab

[47:35]i said no

[47:39]i mean this is the song that i uh you know when i think of amy whitehouse i think of this song

[47:46]this came out it was like nothing else i think anybody's i mean it was a wholly unique song in

[47:53]itself so i think this is what i think of why you think of amy whitehouse and of course listening to

[47:58]it now like it's such an upbeat song like i when this song came out i was like oh this is fun this

[48:02]is great and then i think we all watched that movie amy that's kind of documentary about it it's

[48:09]really and when you watch that and then listen to this album it is just so hard to listen to her

[48:14]talk about what eventually is going to be your self-destruction right like it's it's tough yeah

[48:19]yeah i always i always just enjoyed listening to this music i mean we'll talk about the backing

[48:23]band and the production it's great her voice is great she's shouting out donny hathaway already

[48:28]but i never listened to the words enough and she says later in this track

[48:33]i never want to drink again i only need a friend and at that point i was like i'm

[48:39]done i'm finished i will listen to this for this podcast and i'm never listening again it just was

[48:44]a dagger to the heart i've never i've never been a big amy winehouse fan admittedly i've heard a few

[48:49]of these songs but i didn't even know they were amy winehouse songs so i've heard i've heard this

[48:52]song but i had no idea who's singing just because i'm not really into music and when i started

[48:58]listening i know these songs and i texted you guys multiple times i'm like how like matt was talking

[49:04]about steely dan or something like how can you listen to that when you have this amazing album

[49:08]and i was listening i was listening to this album and i was listening to this album and i was listening to

[49:09]it and i was so into this and then you matt suggested checking out the the netflix movie

[49:14]or whatever it is amy and i watched that and it just made me listen to this whole thing in a whole

[49:19]new light it is so you just tragic and the demons involved there and then like the the media just

[49:26]covering and making fun of her going through all these issues it was so so hard to watch

[49:31]and it makes you look at this or listen to this through a whole different lens so for those for

[49:35]anybody that doesn't know amy winehouse did die of an overdose or i mean overdosed

[49:39]or alcohol poisoning poisoning like three years after this album came out which is why this was

[49:43]the last studio album of hers at 27 right yeah just just a tragic story we've had a lot of tragic

[49:51]stories on this on this list but this is probably the the big one because a it happened like when

[49:56]we were in high school right so it's something that we all knew about and uh and i think b like

[50:02]you way after that right yeah way after that yeah it took me a while seven or something oh it took

[50:08]me a while guys

[50:09]i was hanging i was hanging out you know she died in 2011 yeah i was hanging guys just because i was

[50:16]hanging out in my letter jacket by the trophy case but she was singing about it this whole album if

[50:20]you listen now as a cry for help every yeah song has something where she's telling you like i'm not

[50:26]doing well you know i do not recommend watching this documentary if you are a dad because once

[50:30]again like so many of these female kind of ingenues the the dad is the problem because he's like

[50:37]literally in the song she goes

[50:39]i asked my dad if i should go to rehab and he's like no and of course the reason is guess who was

[50:43]making money off of amy winehouse yeah the dad it's another berenstein bears effect where it's

[50:47]like dumb dad i'm dumb the worst part of that is she she's finally getting away she goes to some

[50:53]island and she's relaxing with some friends and she's trying like to get back on track and her

[50:58]dad shows up with like a camera crew because he's making a documentary about himself and you're like

[51:03]you piece of shit just come on look out for someone else in your life it's

[51:09]ultimately it's her responsibility but man there's a lot of people involved that did not

[51:14]make it any easier right i i mean like i we hear this all the time i mean i'm just thinking off the

[51:20]top of my head right like joe jackson jackson five yeah i think like britney spears's dad right i mean

[51:25]like yes it happens all the time i don't know if uh um there's a bunch of them yeah you're right

[51:31]to say i know what you're saying but like it's just it's not her fault that her parents are

[51:37]like this and you weren't saying this russell so i'm not trying to say that yeah

[51:39]but like you know a lot of it was i mean you're just stuck and you you have an outlet here and

[51:45]again to your guys point every every song is a cry for help right yeah it's like the only way you can

[51:52]she can express it because everybody else around her is like making money off her and said oh keep

[51:55]going and here here's the outlet that it's finally coming out of yeah so by the way i do want to take

[52:00]this moment to promote my new podcast it's called beck did a better junior it's me and my two kids

[52:04]uh we're talking about records uh we do a lot of things we do a lot of things we do a lot of things

[52:09]actually after we record this podcast it usually starts about one in the morning on friday

[52:13]a lot of crying i have to edit out but it's actually get that content it's all about the

[52:18]content yeah listen speaking of good let's talk about you know i'm no good oh this is a crusher

[52:24]there's a ghost face remix of this that i love too so this is just me kind of spitballing so

[52:34]she references roger moore who's the bond guy right yes this sounds like a bond type song

[52:39]doesn't it doesn't this sound like a 007 type song you guys the chances of her at some point

[52:44]singing a bond song would have been 100 if she yeah if she would have kept going i mean there's

[52:50]no doubt adele did it yeah she would have sang it over adele i think oh yeah there are a bunch of

[52:56]you're right throughout the whole album there's a bunch of references that are like very british

[52:59]things that maybe you caught them on the fourth or fifth listen but i think that this album you

[53:09]know to their heart because there's stuff that we missed that's just part of slang that we don't

[53:12]even know and to that point the next song i love fish and chips right yeah she says it right i have

[53:19]bad teeth okay oh that's too matt was just saying that that wasn't part of doesn't she say something

[53:25]about chips and bitter i i gotta i gotta make it a joke mind the gap in and you know i'm no good

[53:33]she does there's that whole line about uh there's another shrimp on the bobby whole section about you

[53:39]know i'm upstairs with my ex-man and he's in a place but i can't get joy and then you know

[53:43]thinking about you in my last throes that's when my buzzer goes that's the best euphemism for

[53:48]orgasm we've heard in the first 33 albums like that's outstanding the writing here is so good

[53:53]that's weird because when i hear real orgasms in real life usually the buzzing stops after that

[53:58]there you go it's clever it's clever it's a good joke also i have to i think that was a good joke

[54:09]all right so here's the deal is that that song was about her um basically cheating on the guy

[54:15]what she did she talked about how she like ended up cheating on this guy to really put a total dagger

[54:20]in the relationship because they kept going back and forth and she was like i needed to sleep with

[54:23]one of his friends to make sure it was over all right guys you know what i've heard about hanging

[54:28]with mr jones but me and mr jones and mr jones what kind of fuck just kill it here we go yes

[54:39]yeah that is the best ever what an opening line yes the backup singers

[54:44]i mean when you hear the doo-wop about slick rick it's so great

[54:49]and and this song apparently is about aaron correct me is it naz yeah naz i didn't know

[54:57]it was about naz that's it is nasir jones is his real name naz is who it's about aaron

[55:02]were they dating or what why is it is it about i think they were dating friends kind of something

[55:08]in between but

[55:09]yeah that it's about naz aaron everyone said they do share a producer salam remi is a producer

[55:14]on a lot of these tracks and he produced naz's album godson so that's probably salam remi you

[55:20]guys know what else he produced when i was listening i was reading a little bit about

[55:24]salam remi and he worked with the fujis uh wyclef a lot of really great acts but you know who else

[55:31]he worked with you guys remember the song the hot stepper by aini kamozi yes he was the producer for

[55:39]this song check this song out i don't know he produced this one i knew he was a really good guy

[55:43]but i was like i don't care what you say about the fujis album this is the jam by this guy it's

[55:49]a straight up jam man is this uh is any kamozi is he on this list somewhere this song is better

[55:56]than any song we've listened to that's a no

[55:59]are we doing i know what bo don't know are we doing a salam remi list russell i've thought

[56:07]about it but we decided not to because we're not going to do it because we're not going to do it

[56:09]because i just wanted to focus on aini kamozi the whole time i saw him once and i said are you

[56:12]really the hot stepper and he goes yeah look at this and he poured milk all over his feet he's

[56:16]like my feet are burning i'm the hot stepper excuse me i wanted to say about salam remi is

[56:22]that he got to start playing keyboards for curtis blow who curtis blow update he is out of the

[56:27]hospital with his heart transplant he's doing better now yep yeah i saw him okay i start

[56:32]curtis blow i said how are you doing he goes oh look at my heart it's great that he poured milk

[56:36]all over his chest he's like ah it's so good it feels good this is a normal thing

[56:39]to do do you hear how weird it sounds aaron when i say that to other people pouring milk

[56:42]on their body to cure things you understand what i'm saying here there's also a youtube

[56:46]video of salam remi telling a story about what's the most famous song from the fujis what's the

[56:51]matt help me out here what's the lauren hill song ready or not ready or not or one of those two

[56:58]songs one of the most famous ones and supposedly why clef called him and asked him about what they

[57:04]should do with the song and he told him and then why clef stole it and he never got credit for it

[57:09]oh really killing me softly maybe do you guys remember back on the bully when people used to

[57:13]harmonize like this it's killing me softly is the one that oh shoot i don't have that one all good

[57:19]i was ready all right let's talk about guys just like this is way too personal this next let's just

[57:28]let's just take a pause real quick yes why why is his is it says salam remi is that what we're

[57:39]fuck it up no it's salam remi yeah did i is that what we were saying and i just had it wrong in my

[57:44]head am i am i having an episode here sorry yeah i think we've been correct you guys were saying

[57:50]i'll tell you what i will listen back okay i will rewind the tape let me rewind the tape right

[57:56]actually let me rewind the tape right now i pour milk on my face wow i went too far

[58:01]no interesting thing man i've read an interview with him his name is salam remi gibbs

[58:07]yeah his dad was

[58:09]a music uh executive last name of gibbs so he didn't want to go by gibbs but remi comes from

[58:15]doer do remi he's named after the first three notes of the uh musical scale maybe maybe we

[58:21]screwed it up i don't think we were i'll i don't think if it is i'll keep that in as an apology

[58:25]that's what i was thinking just somebody pulling up right now it's salam remi we're good no but

[58:29]we can't no aaron you don't fucking get it we can't remember what we said earlier if we were

[58:33]saying remi salam or salam ready uh all right so let's talk about guys

[58:39]hey stop laughing at me when we talk about the name of this song this is terrible like hey this

[58:45]is too personal i'm gonna talk about this reminds me of my dvd collection just the episodes of just

[58:50]friends okay i don't know how to at least it's not about yeah that's better it's like a ska song

[58:57]isn't it yeah well yeah yeah for sure uh russell you you set me right up i wanted to say about this

[59:04]song this is this is to me it's interesting to me that this album is directly after limited on the

[59:09]list because they both have this reggae influence to them and they're also albums that were backed

[59:17]by a lot of star power and great producers and i love on this song that they just they nailed the

[59:21]horn sound they nailed every sound it sounds like a 70s reggae cover of a soul tune they just did

[59:27]all of their homework it's a great detail am i the only person that accidentally listened to

[59:31]the deluxe version for a week and a half on this and then realized today that half the songs that

[59:36]i thought were amazing like valerie monkey man and all these songs that i thought were amazing

[59:39]were not actually on the album yes it's in the maytals cover no i'd listen to those that deluxe

[59:44]version's got some fun covers on it oh i love toots in the maytals so good aaron don't laugh at this

[59:49]but we got a titular track here back to black

[59:52]listen to this

[59:57]i'll say every song on this album sounds exactly the same to me in my mind but i love the song i

[60:07]think it's such a unique

[60:09]like it's it's this weird like modern doo-wop how would you describe this music

[60:14]i think when i was reading about it to me this is the producer's attempt to kind of replicate

[60:22]that wall of sound like the phil specter thing right you've got all these things coming at it

[60:27]and i was actually listening and the thing that jumped out to me was kind of that there's a piano

[60:31]and it's an electric piano and it's actually a whirlitzer have you guys ever heard of a

[60:36]piano before the electric piano i've

[60:39]heard the term but i have to say i don't know what it means exactly so the the the main difference

[60:43]between a whirlitzer and an acoustic piano is that an acoustic piano it strikes um strings right

[60:49]but a whirlitzer strikes metal reeds like a reed like a like a flat thing like a reed for an

[60:56]instrument and so i started thinking i wonder what the greatest whirlitzer piano songs ever were

[61:02]so i've got a list for you guys of the greatest whirlitzer piano songs ever so check out this list

[61:07]i'm excited about that

[61:08]i can imagine for us just sitting around russ is on a date he's like have you ever thought about

[61:14]what the greatest rule of two songs are and the woman's like i need to go to the bathroom and you

[61:18]hear a car speed away wait you're mocking this this is my a material rob what are you talking

[61:23]about i'm so stoked hey you want to be talking about making fun of people that have rabbits as

[61:29]pets okay well next time you're on a date tell somebody hey do you want to see my whirlitzer

[61:32]and see what happens i think one of the cool things about the whirlitzer is though it has this sound

[61:37]which kind of is very similar to the whirlitzer it has this sound which kind of is very similar to

[61:38]60s and 70s rock and r&b and a lot of these songs on amy winehouse's album kind of call back to that

[61:45]right and so i think the first the first song on the list is ray charles what i say and if you

[61:52]remember in the first song amy winehouse references hanging out with ray and that's a reference to ray

[61:58]charles so check out this song in the whirlitzer i love the sound of this

[62:05]i didn't know this was

[62:08]it is this was in 1959

[62:12]same year as kind of and it's atlantic records greatest selling song of all time

[62:19]why is this sound so much worse recording wise than kind of blue

[62:23]like why does that sound so clear and that that ray charles sounds on so muffled

[62:28]probably has to do with money right probably has to do with who the engineer was i will also say

[62:33]i cannot listen to ray charles without having flashbacks of listening to that terrible ray

[62:37]charles album on that last day

[62:38]country western songs by ray charles i was like how did this make the list

[62:43]the interesting thing about that song was actually banned by the radio because there's

[62:48]comments if you guys remember that song where he's talking with the backup singers they're kind of

[62:52]like taking it from church and it was considered too erotic and it was banned from the radio all

[62:58]over the country i was wondering why my pants came off during that time now i know it's too

[63:02]erotic that's why that's why rob shouldn't listen to it before his p test next song on the list

[63:08]next song on the list and you guys remember this one do you guys remember

[63:12]i never loved a man by aretha check this whirlitzer out here

[63:16]oh right and this is the magic chord she gets that chord right from the start yeah

[63:22]and this is the song where she essentially became the queen of soul correct this is what did it for

[63:28]yeah i i think we should call this segment round the whirlitzer wait around the just for the record

[63:38]playing the whirlitzer on this it's someone named dewey spooner old ham and he also played on

[63:44]respect with aretha matt he played on harvest moon with neil young one of your favorite songs

[63:49]it's a good one that's a fun connection aaron he also played for one of your favorite brands he

[63:55]played on an album by the drive-by truckers called brighter than creations dark have you

[63:59]heard of this what yeah i've heard of that one russell you're just crushing this whole thing

[64:03]this is amazing so the whirlitzer player with shout out his birthday russell what's the music

[64:08]that i like that this guy played on maybe maybe think about me i always get your bands confused

[64:13]the talking heads i didn't see that they played a talking head song so i skipped it

[64:17]there was a whirlitzer or two on what's going on with marvin gaye but we're gonna go a different

[64:24]route the next song on the list is marvin gaye i heard it through the grapevine you will recognize

[64:28]this immediately oh this is that song by those california raisins yeah wait marvin gaye covered

[64:37]this

[64:38]man so this was previously recorded by gladys knight and the temptations but marvin gaye is

[64:46]the one who really made it famous right that's the whirlitzer there's some controversy between

[64:52]behind that i think what's the controversy oh i think who who came out with it right or who

[64:57]i think gladys knight was first the temptations were second marvin gaye was third all within like

[65:02]a year now where do those raisins fit in by the way you guys didn't laugh enough at the california

[65:06]raisins that should be an automatic world

[65:08]is a fantastic sound but if you've ever heard the isolated marvin gaye vocals from that song it will

[65:12]just it'll put you off of singers for the rest of your life you want to you won't want to hear

[65:16]anything else maybe you didn't hear my intro song where i sounded just like amy winehouse and i

[65:21]sounded you sounded great rob i gotta that's impressive i was singing and i was like oh this

[65:25]is how i know amy winehouse is a very good singer because i sound like garbage trying to emulate her

[65:30]doing jimmy hendrix was much easier i'll just put it that way good man

[65:33]the next song on the list do you guys remember joy to the world or jeremiah

[65:38]was a bullfrog as it's also known oh yeah definitely check out the whorlitzer on this one

[65:42]1971 this is whorlitzer

[65:46]so this song was actually offered to the band steppenwolf weren't they weren't they bad to

[65:56]the bone or something like that yeah and they turned it down and it ended up going to i forgot

[66:02]the name of this band i don't have it written down anywhere three dog night three dog night so

[66:07]three dog

[66:07]night put this on their album as a last ditch song because they needed one more song and some

[66:13]radio station in seattle heard it played it and it completely blew up went to number one on the

[66:17]billboard it was a complete afterthought i do want to say we've talked with matt about best karaoke

[66:21]songs this might be the worst karaoke song you can ever pick the worst you have to hit that note

[66:28]you have to be able to hit this initial okay russell i want you to sing along with this initial

[66:33]oh no i don't okay i'm gonna try to sing along all right

[66:37]red leather yellow leather

[66:39]bumblebee bumblebee and i'm gonna cut out the music and you're just gonna hear me sing on the

[66:44]actual episode

[66:45]come on you can do this you're the best

[66:49]okay

[66:52]i was really trying to

[66:58]one more time

[67:01]one more try

[67:02]one more try

[67:04]okay i'm really trying here too

[67:06]all right

[67:07]you can do it

[67:08]okay my neighbors are gonna come over now

[67:13]i think we should all have to try once matt you're up next

[67:18]matt will you try once

[67:20]all right let's

[67:21]really good singer guys

[67:24]that was actually good that was legit good

[67:32]aaron you're up next

[67:33]oh shit okay this doesn't seem fair

[67:37]this is like oh bloody to me now

[67:40]jeremiah was a bullfrog

[67:45]okay russell

[67:46]okay i'm only doing one line please okay come on don't don't make it look bad

[67:52]by the way aaron sang that song for my wedding and he ruined it

[67:54]everybody's like why do you have jeremiah was a bullfrog as you're

[68:00]uh russell here you go

[68:04]uh

[68:05]this is the only one i've ever heard of

[68:07]only one that makes the final cut by the way i'm editing all the rest out

[68:10]jeremiah was a bullfrog

[68:14]okay so it turns out i'm actually the worst singer in this whole podcast

[68:19]i make all i make most of the parody songs that doesn't make any sense why are they called three

[68:23]dog night by the way has that ever been explained i actually do have a story for that you guys want

[68:27]to know why they're called three dog night no no thanks so it's actually an australian saying

[68:32]where when it's cold out you you sleep and the next day you

[68:37]you have to sleep with your dogs and if your friends ask you what kind of night was as

[68:41]you say it was a three dog night you had to cuddle up with your dogs

[68:44]i had some nights like that in college you know what i'm talking about

[68:47]there were never three of them though no there was most of them most of them i would pray for

[68:52]a one dog night most of them i had a two dog night with steve and zach in the same bed i'm

[68:56]the only person ever okay there we go let's not brag about that i mean humble brag right there

[69:04]lucky we got to get to the number

[69:07]one world it's your song ever and you know who it's by we're going to jump out of the 60s and

[69:11]70s and go to 96 the album is odelay back where it's at this is the world let's start checking out

[69:18]oh yeah this is just i i am a huge fan it turns out yeah right same i love every one of these

[69:28]songs and interestingly amy whitehouse played the world let's write her album nope

[69:32]who played it on this album

[69:36]so when it comes to playing the whirlitzer on hit albums who did it better back did it better

[69:44]that's not even a question russ that i think that might be your best list that you've ever

[69:49]come up with i love you like it i love the whirlitzer it turns out that's a great one

[69:53]it's so good uh just like when i play my kids in monopoly it turns out that it's a

[69:57]love is a losing guys i'm not doing this anymore okay i'm not making clever

[70:01]not even clever listen love is a losing game okay life is miserable this whole album is a

[70:06]depressing slog whatever it is try to be clever and fall short i don't know what the word term is

[70:11]for that i don't either because i've never done it this is where the dab king's never been there

[70:16]it's great when you listen to the deluxe version of this album there's a version with no audio

[70:21]with no instruments it's just acapella and that that version blows this version out of the water

[70:28]i don't know why they picked this one the other one is so much better it brings you to tears it's

[70:33]so good right don't do that to yourself it's too much

[70:36]this voice

[70:38]it's so good oof all right tears dry on their own

[70:45]such a gutsy move it is isn't it because when you hear this you're like

[70:53]oh ain't no mountain high enough this is gonna be awesome but she kind of pulls it off i don't

[70:58]it's not quite the same but i think she pulls it off i think i agree and she she turns it around

[71:05]into a different feeling for a

[71:06]song that's so familiar to everyone i got to admit i i kind of want to hear her say ain't no mountain

[71:12]higher enough i would love to hear her sing that i think it'd be so good yeah right here

[71:17]kicks down this just bangs russell i think this would be a good i i want to get everybody's

[71:26]opinion on this i think this would be a good car cd for picking up somebody on a date

[71:31]am i crazy for that i mean are you going out for drinks because that seems like maybe a question

[71:36]i don't know if somebody are you dating people that are smart enough to make that connection

[71:40]russell oh absolutely not all right i knew it oh this is only dating smart people come on now

[71:46]dude it took me like two weeks to realize i was listening to the wrong version of the album and

[71:54]then it took me it took me another week to watch the the netflix documentary about her and realize

[71:58]this wasn't as fun as i thought you were also talking to a guy who was listening to an entire

[72:02]beals album with one headphone on and wondering why everybody likes it so much so

[72:06]i didn't think we needed to bring that up again but no i've actually got a whole list here that's

[72:10]my next rolling going is all the things russell's made a mistake with all right just kidding i'm

[72:14]gonna get that with my mom when i see her next week speaking of russell's terrible life here

[72:18]comes the next song wake up alone we just move it on and end this i've known that joke was coming

[72:25]all week and i didn't know how to prepare for it i'll i'll make it you don't have to make it

[72:30]this is my wife waking up alone when i sneak out to the living room before work

[72:35]i read that she did this in one take that's pretty crazy huh yeah so this i mean literally

[72:42]all these songs are about this guy that she did end up marrying who turns out was kind of a piece

[72:47]of trash but can you imagine somebody writing an album like this about you it would be incredible

[72:54]wouldn't it like i nobody would ever date me or be with me and then write an album about it

[72:59]right they would write an album called like you know like what's that what smells like mulch

[73:05]you know what i mean like anise yeah like no they would not write it well maybe they would write a

[73:10]song called the others we should talk more about doing things in a single take when we did uh

[73:15]he sweats when he sleeps you're right that like it's incredible she did this in one take and

[73:20]that's what jazz musicians did every night they had to go in and rob talked about it you got to

[73:24]do the whole thing live underwear on the floor that would be a song from the album written about

[73:29]me underwear in the dog's gut yeah that whole thing he doesn't wash his sheets you know stuff

[73:35]like that like that would have been a very popular song about me in college

[73:37]naked peloton writer no that's a good question like i'm not song i would write

[73:44]how many times you guys think you washed your sheets in college matt probably did his on the

[73:49]regular but i don't i mean i was like a monthly guy maybe no i don't know oh matt's mom probably

[73:54]let's not claim monthly i don't i don't think there's any college kid in the world any college

[73:58]dude who can claim monthly sheet washing probably no chance no well yeah i mean i think maybe every at

[74:04]least every two months because you you started out then you had like fall break it's probably

[74:10]you need a break you need some sort of like thanksgiving and then you have christmas

[74:13]and then you have j term yeah i don't want to think about it this is this is the impetus of

[74:18]matt's mom doing the laundry he would just come back from college and be like hey man i got this

[74:23]laundry uh she doesn't do the laundry she just folds the laundry you do the laundry you say that

[74:29]a suspicious amount i'm starting to think maybe she does do the laundry i will say russell that

[74:33]makes me feel so much better though because i always thought i was a weirdo for not washing

[74:37]my sheets very much in college but now i realize we're all weirdos well at least we weren't doing

[74:42]anything weird and smell emanating in those beds at that time all right some unholy war

[74:47]smell emanating

[74:50]someone shout out the the guitarist on this whole album there's some really

[74:59]good guitar work and it must be uh is this binky griptite from the dab kings who's playing guitar

[75:03]on this or is it somebody else excuse me excuse me okay now listen we can't just say whatever

[75:09]we want on this podcast we have to have some morals okay you cannot say griptite did you just

[75:16]say dinky griptite binky everybody knows guitar for the dab yeah oh because i was going to say

[75:22]dinky dinky griptite was what the guy said to me when i was getting a drug test

[75:26]i'm sorry you're right i i you guys are saying binky i know binky everybody knows binky dinky

[75:33]stop your grip's too tight nothing's going to come out with that tight grip

[75:40]he can rob rob what he asked you if you could help did you say no you can only hold her

[75:46]would he ask if he could help you

[75:50]that would be great if you listen to this song this is badass

[76:03]there's a few uh there's a few live performances where the dap kings are with her you know like i

[76:08]think i'm trying to think of some oh well is it what's the is it glas to me gloucester what's the

[76:15]festival over in england i don't remember is that a festival you know so they've got the whole

[76:21]fish and chips dap kings they're all dressed in their black suits and their ties and they just

[76:26]they've got everything down to a science and they've got all the dance moves and everything

[76:30]and it is a live show that would be awesome to go to yeah do you think does she have a positive

[76:36]legacy as a live performer because when you watch the documentary there's a lot of a lot

[76:41]of live performances where she showed up and was not in the mental emotional physical position to

[76:46]be performing where she's getting booed off stage she's not performing like what is her legacy as a

[76:52]live performer matt i i think her legacy in general is is unfortunately her demise right like that's

[76:58]her yeah like i mean her legacy is her life performance i think her legacy in general is is unfortunately her demise right like that's her yeah like i

[77:00]mean like you said i didn't know a lot about these other amy winehouse songs until i listened to this

[77:04]album unfortunately i what i know about her is what i heard you know like on late night talk

[77:10]shows where they're literally making fun of somebody with the substance abuse problems and

[77:13]then it's like it's brutal isn't it when you watch the documentary it's brutal to see someone

[77:17]struggling with so much and that it's a punchline for comedians it's oh it's just content for the

[77:23]media it really sucks it's a it's just a friendly reminder and we can never get too many of them

[77:30]that you just don't know what other people have got going on absolutely in the background yeah

[77:33]just be nice just be a kind person yeah you guys stop being such dicks to me please i got

[77:38]a lot of fun i'm on spring break stop trying to blow out other people's candles so that your

[77:43]shines brighter you know just because you you might think that you're that your friends will

[77:49]take it and they're not going to go and cry after the podcast when you're making fun of them

[77:53]you know they might be so you have to be careful

[77:55]that was matt's smart comedy

[77:59]it was like russell's last date addicted to what the dick did you know what i'm talking about all

[78:09]right so we've got the best is the best is that joke about my dating life was the most positive

[78:16]joke out of like the 12 we've made so far these other terrible ones well that's that's also the

[78:20]only one i think we've made russell i think you made the other 11 jokes that's the problem i let

[78:24]you guys off the hook so i didn't you guys didn't have to violate matt's rule of making fun of someone

[78:29]and then having them cry i don't we don't want to blow out your candle russell here's the deal

[78:33]she wrote a song basically about how you shouldn't smoke all of her weed

[78:36]gotta give her credit for that song it's such a hard way to end the album

[78:42]i was listening to today and i was like lux version it doesn't end like this yeah no you're

[78:48]right russell you're totally right i listened to the deluxe version a lot too and you would

[78:51]like you would love hearing valerie and that other stuff this thing ends and you just go oh is this

[78:58]dope but there's not really a build right i mean literally every song is really really similar

[79:06]yeah oh i don't agree at all do you guys think they're all similar i don't think so at all

[79:10]i think you're saying you've got like sky you've got r b you've got soul you've got

[79:15]all sorts of stuff on this album boy i don't know

[79:17]i feel like they're all made to be played in a smoky jazz uh venue that can hold about 50 people

[79:27]you know i don't know that's what i pictured you know i i suppose like looking back to this list

[79:31]like if you go lemonade was kind of i think this is the problem with coming off a lemonade is that

[79:34]lemonade was so varied right but if you list and then white album that was pretty varied but like

[79:40]jimi hendrix you could say that's all kind of a very similar song wu-tang i think you could

[79:44]definitely say those are all pretty similar i i i don't know maybe it's maybe it's a dumb i i think

[79:48]you're both right because i think there are oh aaron coming in russell's 100 right that there are

[79:54]she's she and her team

[79:57]are pulling in many different styles of music but there is that mark ronson kind of put this sheen

[80:03]on the whole thing so there's definitely his fingerprints on it where the sound is similar

[80:11]throughout the whole album which isn't so different from other things we've heard but

[80:14]yeah it's definitely of a piece the whole the whole album i i love the idea of a doo-wop though

[80:19]where it's like you can so rosie has logged off and he has muted himself so this dumb has somehow

[80:25]pushed the one button you should not push when we're podcasting so let's all say

[80:30]things about rosie that we think right now i'm right here i'm totally okay i'm sorry

[80:34]so uh forget i said that okay that's getting edited out yeah from rosie i don't think you

[80:41]should actually edit this out it's actually quite funny that you said you're gonna edit it out and

[80:44]then you don't later guys let's get into everyone's favorite you know how favorite it is listen to it

[80:48]and now it's time for everyone

[80:53]we even made a siren in the song

[80:59]did it better reading system we had a second song

[81:03]one of the second song of lemonade oh yeah there's a siren oh yeah it's kind of buried in the mix

[81:12]though it's really down there so pull it back up play it real quick yeah second side just play

[81:17]because you've got them all right there don't you have all the list siren on here it sounds like it's

[81:21]underwater hold up they don't love you like i know i just want to hear it again no no no here comes

[81:25]what there's not a vuvuzela in here wait do you say vuvuzela yeah

[81:30]that's a vuvuzela i would say vuvuzela i've been saying it wrong my whole life

[81:37]what i thought we were i thought we were going to have to go through the whole thing where

[81:45]man was trying to find ourselves ever that episode wait wait here comes the round here comes the round

[81:51]by the way if you haven't listened to 56 hours of beck did it better you don't get that joke and

[81:55]you're not a real fan so fuck off oh if you don't know that joke we're glad that you didn't listen

[82:01]to that episode like number three or whatever it was like this isn't going to be a run everybody's

[82:08]like what is he saying who the fuck are our listeners anyways if they haven't listened to

[82:13]those episodes i wanted to listen to this podcast but i just could not get through episode one

[82:17]actually episode zero we

[82:21]episode zero what a baller move to do an episode zero so good all right what some people would call

[82:27]it let's get into the final rating system folks the rating system is not complicated it's actually

[82:34]quite cool and everybody loves it uh it is is it a rolling well toned that means it should be a

[82:41]33rd album on the list it's great it's awesome did it get rolling boned that means that it should

[82:47]have been lower than 32 now i know what you're thinking lower than 32 i don't know what you're

[82:51]thinking lower than 33 is that 34 35 no lower is a lower number so in this case we're actually

[82:56]doing some subtracting okay and not subtracting down the list we're actually subtracting up the

[83:01]list which makes sense to me if you're not uh if you're a pretty good math guy like i am or is this

[83:06]a rolling groan oh no i should i should have listened to this so soon this i should have

[83:11]listened to this next week or maybe the week after three weeks after five weeks after somewhere down

[83:15]lower on the list that's a rolling groan erin what do you think about this episode of the podcast

[83:21]i think if you think it's good that would be a rolling well tone just to remind you because i

[83:28]said that a while ago and i if you notice i didn't say a lot of stuff about rolling well toned

[83:32]i just let it go quickly this might be my favorite bit of the the whole day i think amy is an all-time

[83:39]great voice but i think that uh there are parts of this album that border on karaoke and i think

[83:46]in terms of the list karaoke uh the so just a few albums we haven't gotten to yet uh nina simone

[83:57]silken soul oh my god we haven't covered all the albums yet this is a lady soul aretha franklin

[84:04]young gifted in black i just for fun i listened to roberta flack first take this week that's a

[84:09]great album i know she's a russell's mom favorite al green let's stay together otis redding otis

[84:16]blue

[84:16]sam cook live at the harlem square i feel like we've kind of gone off on the side road of

[84:22]kind of meandering down erin's scenic drive here we go yeah i'm just going down my scenic drive

[84:27]of soul albums that i love that should have been ranked higher than this album so i i've enjoyed

[84:32]this album i probably won't listen to it again because it's so heartbreaking um but she is a

[84:37]fantastic voice but i gotta say rolling groan there's no way this is above those albums that

[84:41]i mentioned well and you had the same opinion about biggie right biggie and tupac you have

[84:45]trouble listening to them because

[84:46]you know how it ended it hurts yeah man it hurts it's hard i can't do it it's too tough

[84:51]yeah that's gonna be like people trying to listen to this podcast

[84:54]after they find out how it all ended none of us talk to each other anymore

[84:59]aaron's aaron's kid the only way he learns about aaron is through this

[85:03]listening to this podcast and he's humiliated to be aaron's spawn

[85:06]dad i can't believe you went through that whole phase with where you didn't like anise

[85:12]my dad doesn't like to eat anise all the millennials love to eat anise all night and day

[85:16]all right matt what do you think this album is a rolling well-toned rolling bone or rolling groan

[85:22]um i just want to say that rob you're you're uh thank you for what you're about to say thank you

[85:27]i just want to say thank you your description of how all this works or if you wanted to be if you

[85:31]think it's rolling bone this should be higher than this so that's or lower but it's a higher

[85:35]number apparently that translates well to camera settings and so if you need to like focus out you

[85:42]need to move the number in and so sarah my wife has said that

[85:46]from your descriptions she's now a better photographer because she could focus better

[85:51]based on how you described everything so you're doing a public service uh by describing that

[85:57]every week so can i hire your wife to do a boudoir photo shoot for me would that be appropriate for

[86:01]me to do yeah no that'd be fine all right because i've got a couple i've got some ideas involving

[86:08]anise who my good unfortunately named friend anise yeah i

[86:16]you know for most of for most of the reasons that rosie said i think this is rolling groaned which

[86:22]means it's ranked too high should be lower on the list but have a higher number did i say that right

[86:27]yeah it's so you think it should be like 34 35 somewhere around well yeah or even way back you

[86:31]know for for that reason i think the list is made uh you know it's voted on by a lot of younger

[86:36]people now and so their their uh bias if you will is coming in they grew up with this album they've

[86:42]heard it this is one of their jams and so that's why it's up there so

[86:46]hi so no i think uh for the same reasons that rosie this is rolling groaned matt do you think

[86:51]if they when they redo this list in five years and it fucks us over once again do you think

[86:56]because we're still not done with this podcast do you think this is still going to be at 33

[87:00]no no it'll be like a justin bieber album or something at 33 and then we'll really have to

[87:05]have a discussion about it so russell rolling well-toned rolling boned or rolling grown

[87:11]i'm gonna go against the grain with you guys on this one when i listen to this

[87:16]first time admit i said this before i didn't know these were amy whitehouse songs i've never

[87:21]listened to amy whitehouse i just adored this album i thought it was fantastic and i was so

[87:28]into this and and i was saying i don't know how you guys are listening to anything else

[87:31]but part of me i've there are two things that have kind of changed my view of it a little bit

[87:35]the first is i was listening to the deluxe version so there were three songs valerie monkey band

[87:41]and the original demo version of love is a losing game which were three of my favorite songs

[87:46]but i i really loved it i at one point was ready to put this in my top five of what we've listened

[87:52]to on the top 35 or so far i was going to put it up there behind what's going on my beautiful

[87:57]dark twisted fantasy white album and purple rain in the top five wow but when i listened

[88:05]when i watched the movie the documentary and i saw like what is behind this it makes it really

[88:11]hard for me to listen back to it and enjoy it the way i was the first few times so but it's

[88:16]for me because i screwed up on the deluxe album and now i know all the meaning behind it i can't

[88:22]quite put it up in my top five but i still think it's rolling boned i think the album rocks i would

[88:26]much rather listen to this than a lot of the albums we've listened to so far and wrong you're

[88:31]all wrong this is a rolling tone of voice because i'll tell you right now every clip i played from

[88:38]this album was within the first five seconds of these songs and not because i'm lazy and i didn't

[88:42]want to find a good place in the song it was literally because i think the most powerful

[88:46]part of the album was the song that i listened to and i didn't want to find a good place in the song

[88:46]every song is when it went from this music to hearing this voice just pop out of the speakers

[88:52]and it literally was like staring into a blast furnace i mean you would feel like this heat of

[88:57]the voice coming off it's just so powerful and i and i think one great part in that in that movie

[89:02]is watching her sing with her idol tony bennett and you hear just how powerful she is i mean just

[89:07]yeah she when when she had it together she could just unload and it really if anything it makes

[89:13]you sad that we don't get to see more of her work coming out it would have been great to see

[89:16]what she could have ended up doing people people have to check out the documentary i think one of

[89:21]the the coolest and most heartbreaking parts was she wins the five grammys in the one night she's

[89:26]in london she's not in these states for it but tony bennett announces that she wins the grammy

[89:32]for best album or whatever and she she's just like overwhelmed and then she leaves the stage

[89:37]and she's talking to one of her like childhood friends and she's telling her like look this

[89:42]isn't even fun when you're not high and it is just like it goes from this

[89:46]amazing high to this amazing just kick in the gut and stomach and it is so tough to watch

[89:51]well it's a lot like our episodes we start off we start off with so much promise

[89:56]and then by the end you realize that the running joke was anise which we all knew from the very

[90:01]second i heard that that voicemail i was like well there's our running joke for the night don't need

[90:05]to look any farther and there's a good chance that on the next recording i'm going to play that

[90:09]voicemail again just to have the same joke over and over i think it's that good so congratulations

[90:16]relative of eric listen next week we've got stevie wonder and inner vision

[90:21]when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time

[90:28]but you're just too lazy to look it up online

[90:32]beck did it better

[90:46]guys i know you're good friends do you think i need to go to the doctor

[90:49]what the fuckery is wrong with my anus right now

[90:51]hold on a little bit higher yeah a little bit higher is that better oh that's better for me

[90:59]turn your camera a little bit to the left a little bit yeah you might want to go check that out yeah

[91:03]all right thank you thank you i appreciate your friendship how'd you get one of those

[91:06]cameras on a tube i gotta pick one of those up we made it through the whole album without

[91:11]talking about keeping his dick wet with his safe same old safe bet good job guys

[91:15]well

[91:16]i'm editing that to the beginning of the episode now that's how it's going to start

[91:20]and i'm going to start with like a message to aaron's child
