Talking Heads: Remain in the Light (1980)

Beck Did It Better Podcast 1980
About this episodeWe are talking about the band that Russell thinks is Rob's favorite, The Talking Heads! We are talking polyrhythms, chicken coops, and how an album can really lose some steam at the end!  We start by talking about the bar we hung out in college and the smooth sounds of Rick James. Then Aaron tells a great story about the greatest challenge he has ever faced in his life. Then we talk parenting and swearing and the challenges of eating an everything bagel. We go over what got stolen out of Rob's jeep and gym etiquette with Russell. We talk beeps and blips and Aaron's Big Curve.  Aaron drops th

[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums that's decided by

[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the

[00:09]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts and we promise to do almost no

[00:13]research all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it

[00:19]better we are all the way up to album 38 i think remain in the light by the talking heads all right

[00:25]everybody so listen guys let's turn on the radio and let's listen to k-rob welcome to k-rob we just

[00:33]switched over from alternative music to music rob likes and to start the new station we got an email

[00:38]here from a listener this is from aaron's wife at gmail.com she writes guys can you please play a

[00:44]song that aaron would like he's been feeling pretty sad lately about how mean everybody's

[00:48]you may find yourself living in a tiny house

[00:54]you

[00:55]the backseat of a large automobile

[01:03]you may find yourself sleeping in a tent in the garage with a couple of mice

[01:09]you may ask yourself why do all the guys make fun of me

[01:13]we want aaron's life yes we're very jealous he works from 3 30 to 5 he never overdoes it

[01:22]he's going hiking again

[01:25]his wife puts up with him and we all want aaron's life we all want aaron's life

[01:31]when you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time

[01:36]i do not have a friend whose wife still likes me there's not a single one all of them eventually

[01:53]turn on me every single wife

[01:55]hates me by the end somewhere there's some poor bastard who has an aaron's wife at gmail.com who's

[02:00]going to get all these emails after this i feel bad for that person right now uh yeah i've sent

[02:05]him but i've sent him some stuff i probably can't take back rob i'll be honest with you my son asked

[02:10]me today if rob is the best person and i did not say no i didn't say yes either but i didn't say

[02:14]no the best person yes like as a person i think about doing good things all the time yeah you

[02:22]know like you know like at the checkout when they're like hey do you want to donate a dollar

[02:26]i'm like no sorry i donate already and i'm like god i gotta start donating already so i can actually

[02:31]believe that when i say you know so i'm not just giving a dollar to like i'm here with three guys

[02:35]that find themselves stuck making a 10 year long podcast we didn't think about that when we started

[02:40]like that rob you gotta put a little pizzazz in it come on we've got russell in minnesota russell

[02:46]how are you doing you know rob this goes out to magic mike and all his facts facts aren't simple

[02:50]and facts aren't straight facts are lazy and facts are lame facts don't come with our amazing point

[02:56]of view facts don't do what our dumb shit listeners want us to do take a look at these

[03:01]hands rob take a look at these hands i'll tell you what that reminds me of aaron when he's always

[03:05]saying facts don't care about your feelings then he's going on and on with that q and a stuff it's

[03:09]like yeah i get it you know like okay i got matt minneapolis matt how are you doing excellent rob

[03:15]thanks for having me oh god i was gonna take a drink there and you answered so fast i got aaron

[03:19]out on the whisper

[03:20]coast aaron how are you doing and you're in your tiny house today west coast i'm in my house it is

[03:25]not a house in motion but i am inside the house tonight so we'll see how it goes i'm not in the

[03:30]garage i did see a rat walk across the street today so that was kind of weird put you at home

[03:35]right yeah you're like hey what was is that really what you're going to open up the podcast with i

[03:41]saw a rat cross the street today i wait you don't that's it that's weird it could have been a possum

[03:46]i'm not sure but it was definitely a critter that looks wet or possum like walking across the street

[03:50]outside the house you don't know if there's a rat or an opossum that is i don't know because it could

[03:55]be little kind of picturing him like listening to a little uh you know don't worry be happy as he's

[04:03]kind of strolling he said he's just kind of strolling across the street and that's kind of

[04:07]what he was doing hey having a great time out on the west coast yeah his kid's falling and like

[04:11]busting his teeth open whatever he always does and aaron's like hey i think that's a possum or

[04:15]a rat over there i don't know mosey and on over let's get right into our voice in the house

[04:20]so stupid i can kiss my ass dumb shit listeners they can't even tell what we're doing yeah i don't

[04:26]know why listeners have not been calling as much lately uh after playing that i don't know

[04:30]hey boys i know it's been a long time since you've heard from your target demographic

[04:38]of middle-aged women from minnesota that does seem i have to say that seems targeted at one

[04:43]of us i'm just going to say that right now that seems that seems aggressively so i thought i'd

[04:47]call in this is krista i just finished

[04:50]it is at the top of my list i really enjoyed that one um thank you there were plenty of

[04:59]jokes to go around so everybody can feel good about that i have to say that as a

[05:04]white lutheran girl from the suburbs i had no right listening to hip-hop but i love it

[05:14]and i guarantee if my dad knew i listened to these this music

[05:20]um at that age i would probably get grounded now because some of those things still make me

[05:26]blush even though i love it the first time i heard easy ease you ready for it rob give me that nut

[05:31]oh wow rob you went right for the vulgar stuff on this clip here didn't you trust me it is not

[05:43]hard to find vulgar stuff on this song just check out the 30 seconds

[05:50]oh yeah oh give me that nut uh there oh yeah this is great matt has literally just put his

[06:01]heads on his head and he's relaxing now like he's sitting in the lawn chair he's he's just

[06:05]enjoying the ride right now i blushed but then i needed more um i will agree with russell the

[06:13]defiant ones is a fantastic documentary pause pause pause pause pause she used to agree with

[06:18]me this has not happened in my world in my life i'm not going to do that i'm going to do it in my

[06:20]a long long time where i've gotten any props from a lady so erica or krista or whatever who is this

[06:26]that's leaving this message i appreciate it erica is not even close the defiant one is a fantastic

[06:32]documentary i also think you guys could um learn from straight out of compton i'm surprised you

[06:39]didn't mention that movie um might be a little one-sided considering we don't have easy ease

[06:44]opinion on that rip and also because dray or we could be saving that for straight out of

[06:49]album which would make sense

[06:50]i will also say i loved the list of dray produce songs man those were some good songs they were

[07:00]all my jam i will say i agree i was never really into club that song was big when i was in college

[07:07]and you know where um and so the club i went to was the upstairs of the rube so i don't really

[07:15]yes yes to the club uh well now wait a minute we got to talk a little bit so

[07:20]she's talking about the club i'm talking about the club i'm talking about the club i'm talking about

[07:20]our haunt in college which was basically the upstairs of the rube which as i remember it

[07:25]now first of all the number one thing i think about of the stairs is i did see a woman once

[07:28]fall down drink so much and then fall down those stairs and i laughed and i laughed because it was

[07:34]like a nice fall where it was like butt down and then like she wanted to do it you know on the way

[07:39]down it wasn't like it wasn't it wasn't a tumble it was kind of like a stumble no it was but it

[07:45]that was wild so you picture yourself you're in this grimy college bar you go upstairs which first

[07:50]of all would like that means that me talking to women up in the bar i was always like this

[07:54]how how's it going tonight what's up can you believe they may be paid four dollars for this

[08:02]but this picture of miller high life i can't believe i had to pay four dollars for this

[08:05]and then i all i remember is that they had a pinball machine up there and then one time they

[08:10]gave free buffalo wings and dave ate so many that he got a joker smile where when he had

[08:16]he like slept under the pinball i don't remember there's some stuff maybe i'm not too clear on it

[08:20]but for some reason i can't remember why yeah they had free tater skins and buffalo wings at

[08:25]happy hour and then i sometimes ate so many buffalo wings that and drank so much bush light

[08:29]that when i went home and peed it would smell like buffalo wings and bush light matt matt didn't we go

[08:33]to this bar for your 21st birthday i believe we went there for your 21st birthday and you had a

[08:38]few shots didn't they do the give me the red one give me the green one give me the the water or

[08:43]something like that oh no yep they had like the joe from woodbury yeah famously gave me a couple

[08:50]half in the bag so yeah the third one i thought it was water again but it was some

[08:55]sort of vodka happens as your buddy shows up and he comes and he taps you like on the side when

[09:01]no one's looking and he says hey i'm gonna make you look like a badass i'm gonna get you three

[09:05]shots they're all gonna be water just act like make a face act like you're super tough when

[09:11]you're taking them so he gives you one take the first shot water second shot water third but like

[09:16]you're making all these faces you're playing it up and then the third one he just rails you with

[09:20]something and you're like oh my god i'm gonna get you three shots and you're like oh my god i'm

[09:20]gonna get you three shots and you're like oh my god i'm gonna get you three shots and you're

[09:20]gonna get you three shots and you're like oh my god i'm gonna get you three shots and

[09:20]hard right and it catches you off guard is that right joe joe from woodbury that's the kind of

[09:25]guy he is so yeah yeah yeah i never saw anybody get railed with something hard at the roof but

[09:30]i just love that that was a thing like it's been done so many times somebody's like i'm

[09:36]gonna do the old three shots of water game like can you imagine doing that now it's like a 40

[09:42]year old like hey i'm gonna get you three shots you'd be like well no stop right there i'm not

[09:45]doing that i had one shot two weeks ago and i'm still recovering from that like well the other

[09:50]two but not i had to do the cement mixer did you guys ever have to do any of the bizarre shots like

[09:55]the yeah they would pour the kalua and the lemon and it would curdle the that type of stuff no for

[10:00]me it's just prairie fires these days you know a little tabasco i think that's kind of a nightcap

[10:06]for me not a big deal of course all my birth my birthday's in may so all my birthdays in college

[10:11]coincided directly with finals so no one ever wanted to go out with me i once went i was like

[10:15]hey does anybody want to go to taco bell like and people are like no i'm studying i'm like meanwhile

[10:20]my wife's birthday is in my wife's birthday is in september so everybody wanted to go out with her

[10:25]because it was like she could just go you know and then she was 21 and i wasn't so she would go

[10:29]out to the bar and i would stay at home that's why i'm going to tell my kids the first thing you need

[10:33]to do in college is get a fake id because that is where it's not even about the drinking that's just

[10:37]where fun stuff happens like i was at home in my room playing nba 95 on sega genesis waiting for

[10:43]this my future wife to come back wait are we talking about college or the last hour of my evening

[10:47]all right this is

[10:50]getting too real for us we might need to move on here no there's none of us waiting for each

[10:54]other come home we we see each other we're like hey how's it going and then like one of us had

[10:57]headphones in so we don't even hear each other we're like okay well i just want to say what my

[11:01]favorite song is still going marijuana even though i am not a partaker is um she doesn't

[11:09]do marijuana by rick james that song oh that's actually a great pick that's a great song

[11:14]this is fantastic

[11:20]yeah rick james is an absolute classic

[11:24]man she's damn i don't think i i feel like i've never heard this song before believe it or not

[11:31]oh it's a super jam this whole album's great

[11:34]man is rick james on the list man is rick james on the list anywhere

[11:39]i don't know i didn't pull my list up today

[11:42]i'm tired guys i'm tired oh no man we gotta get moving matt's tired we're getting we're getting

[11:50]to keep going

[11:50]oh my god this is this is a ticking clock before we all fall asleep we're definitely not going to

[11:54]stay up for two hours after this and chat with each other about the same stuff we talked about

[11:57]last week all right so let's get into everybody's rolling going

[12:04]it's time it's time to see what everybody's up to it's time yeah yeah yeah rolling going

[12:14]oh yeah yeah i got i got something i gotta get off

[12:20]my chest i gotta talk about

[12:21]nice yeah you guys ever you guys ever make a mistake and the mistake itself isn't the hard

[12:31]part it's knowing you're gonna have to live with this mistake for an extended period of time that

[12:35]that at that moment when you make the mistake that's the worst part knowing that this is gonna

[12:38]last for a while are you quitting the podcast i don't want to hear about it like are you quitting

[12:43]the fucking podcast after i made that song i had a song about how jealous we are of your life

[12:48]and you're quitting the podcast outrageous

[12:50]you could have told us you're gonna send me a text before i drove home at 10 p.m on a friday

[12:55]night to record this shit aaron yeah my rolling going was aaron's off the podcast so i guess

[12:59]now what am i supposed to talk about a few a few episodes ago i said that my wife you know it'd be

[13:04]nice if she just put a spoon in the dishwasher i knew that one right away she actually does a ton

[13:11]i'm just trying to make kind of a subtle joke and that's that's getting edited out the only

[13:16]part that's going to edit it's this podcast is going to start with you being like she doesn't put

[13:20]a spoon in the dishwasher so yes i know exactly what you're talking about so you guys never pick

[13:26]on my west coast lifestyle and sensibilities and for a long time i i went through the exercise of

[13:32]trying to buy more earth-friendly aluminum foil like the recycled stuff or the shit and it's

[13:38]terrible what the what the hell is more earth-friendly aluminum foil how can it be anything

[13:44]but aluminum what does that mean like because it's like it's thinner and it's made out of recycled

[13:48]material instead of

[13:50]and it's terrible it's awful it wrecks oh imagine that every time you try to use it never would have

[13:55]thought you never would have guessed that you know that's a big surprise because it is a lot of times

[13:58]i'm using tin aluminum foil and i'm like god i wish this was thinner like i wish this was just so thin

[14:04]because you know what i love using cling wrap oh that's my favorite it's so thin and it's somehow

[14:08]thin and hard to tear and i never know how to use it so i wish aluminum foil is more like cling wrap

[14:13]so i finally decided you know what i can do other things to help save the planet i'm gonna just

[14:20]go right back to reynolds aluminum foil i'm not messing around i'm gonna get the military grade

[14:24]stuff when i buy aluminum foil all right so i bought 200 feet of it like i'm not gonna fuck

[14:29]around i went to the grocery store i bought the 200 foot roll of aluminum foil well we know aaron

[14:35]loves speed i've i've been i've been really working on my aluminum foil tearing technique

[14:41]i've gotten it down so i don't because i used to have a lot of problems where i'd try to tear it

[14:44]and i'd get a corner that was broken off and it would piss me off it's not really improved what

[14:50]my technique with the aluminum because i use it for bacon or whatever else i'm roasting so on

[14:54]wednesday night i'm going to roast some asparagus i go to grab the aluminum foil out of the cupboard

[15:00]i fucking drop the aluminum foil on the ground and the end of the tube gets all bent and kinked

[15:07]up so that the the foil is kind of crinkled and so as you unravel the unroll the foil

[15:12]one end starts to tear off so it's not a perfect rectangle anymore and i've only used eight feet

[15:19]of this 200 foot roll i now have to live with this mistake for another 192 feet of aluminum foil

[15:25]i'm so upset about this i've been just beside myself all week i'm so pissed every time i gotta

[15:30]use it ask him rob ask him did you just go dump the other 196 feet in the bay and like like drown

[15:36]a seal with it or what do you do with it no i don't i don't get my like my marriage is hanging

[15:41]on by a thread i can barely like interact with my kids like my job is super stressful i what the fuck

[15:49]is going on in your life that this is your thing where you're like oh i've got this thing where i've

[15:53]got to have a conversation with these guys and we really need to fill content oh i know what i'm

[15:58]going to talk about and you were excited you're like i got a good one i got something i've been

[16:02]upset about it um well here here's the thing i think you got to put it you got to put a price

[16:06]tag on it i'm looking it up right now and it says that my favorite story

[16:11]it's 949 for a 200 foot roll aaron's got to work like two weeks to make nine nine dollars and

[16:19]49 cents if they picture that 10 bill that you just lit it on fire throw that shit away and just

[16:25]say i'm done with it but then it's wasted it's a waste of a perfectly good aluminum foil you save

[16:31]that aluminum foil for crafting yeah because your kid is getting right to that crafting age where

[16:36]they're going to need like like masking tape in my house masking tape is like the world's most

[16:40]valuable resource in my house we buy it at costco we buy like six rolls of masking tape at a time

[16:46]it's gone in like days masking tape and scissors all we have

[16:49]like 30 pairs of scissors no idea where they are the girls just take them and then use them to tape

[16:53]everything up and cut stuff i don't even know what they're doing like i said i don't have time to

[16:57]interact with my family i'm too busy planning this podcast aaron i'm sure your son could put

[17:01]an aluminum foil hat on or something if he had to listen to you talk about these stories for too

[17:05]long right like he can find a use for that real quick dad dad my friends at school say they have

[17:11]a microwave we better put on these hats and protect ourselves yes we should son but the

[17:19]i feel bad making fun of aaron's kid i'm gonna take that back the borderline happy ending of

[17:24]the story is i told my wife how upset i was and she was like relax what are you so upset about

[17:28]and then she tried to use the aluminum foil the next day and she was like oh yeah this is this

[17:31]is terrible but i think she fixed then she's pissed at you i think she got it fixed so i think it's

[17:37]gonna be okay i'm not certain but i was really in that moment i was looking i was just staring down

[17:42]the barrel of 192 feet of messed up aluminum foil that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[17:49]160 feet

[17:51]the end is kinked and it's weird

[17:55]doesn't roll out right hey hey aaron's rob aaron's aluminum foil

[18:02]yeah aaron's aluminum foil bends where other people's end right

[18:08]dropping it on the floor

[18:11]my wife tried to use it didn't work that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:16]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[18:49]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[19:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[19:49]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[20:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[20:49]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[21:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[21:49]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[22:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[22:19]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[22:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[22:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[22:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[23:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[23:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[23:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[23:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[23:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[24:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[24:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[25:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[25:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[26:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[26:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[27:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[27:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[28:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[28:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[29:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[29:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[29:48]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:18]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:42]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:43]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:44]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:44]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:44]all right so aaron that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[30:44]and someone's monopolizing it that's fine but if there are not multiple options

[30:48]i think you got to get your shit in and move along

[30:50]yes there's a there's there's there's kind of a hierarchy at the gym depending on i mean

[30:58]depends on where you go right so i'm uh more of an la fitness guy than like in lifetime you know

[31:03]lifetime's a lot more expensive rob you pay like thousands of dollars for your gym i'm guessing so

[31:08]they've got no idea jenny does it so i'm sure it's i'm sure it's actually ten thousands of

[31:14]dollars so i'm sure it's i'm sure it's actually ten thousands of dollars

[31:14]so and i and i used to i used to go a lot before the pandemic to at like five in the morning right

[31:19]and there'd be people lined up and i'd get there at five and it'd be out by 6 6 30 and get everything

[31:24]in right but it's the same people every day and it's the same people for like the last 10 years

[31:29]and so they've been coming at the exact same time for that much every day and every tuesday you know

[31:35]they're doing this and there's this guy who you know he'd always just do horrible my guess is i

[31:39]guess he's doing dips the thing that makes you feel terrible that you can't do right i love dips

[31:44]wait you can do them oh yeah this is bullshit let's move it along yeah i also love dips so

[31:51]the problem is like if they're there every day doing that but like if they've been there for

[31:56]five years and every tuesday at six o'clock let's say and the in and that's what they've done like

[32:03]i give them a little bit of a pass i gotta if you're if they're there every day doing that you

[32:08]know like religiously i mean that kind of does turn into their machine if you will at that time

[32:14]i don't know i'm slightly in that camp so i think you got to kind of feel it out and it's like this

[32:19]person the next that's aaron at the gym yeah you know so i get i get it rob i see rob what are your

[32:27]thoughts you're a professional gym goer what are your thoughts on monopolizing a machine at the

[32:31]yeah it's horse shit if there's limited equipment you cannot superset it with that equipment there's

[32:35]a superset does not does not do that much of a benefit where you get to take up the time

[32:40]and you have all the right to be like hey can i hop in between your sets

[32:44]and they gotta say yes in a post-pandemic world where we're coming off this i understand some

[32:49]people probably aren't even comfortable going to the gym at all but like you're not going to jump

[32:53]in in the middle of a set with someone using a machine anymore it's just not going to happen

[32:56]right yeah that shit doesn't spread by touch just just get in there it's true don't ask just get my

[33:01]favorite part of the gym i think arnold said he goes you know what really helped me when i was at

[33:04]the gym is checking instagram between every lift i will i lifted a place where you get like these

[33:08]20 year olds in there and literally like it's 10 minutes to check your instagram and then they're

[33:14]like don't make me hate you anymore you know what i mean it's like when i go to the grocery store

[33:17]now and i see somebody and they've got like captain crunch and four frozen pizzas and i

[33:20]just want to be like fuck you i've got a family i can't do this like at the gym i'm like i gotta

[33:26]get home i gotta get home and put my kids to bed i can't just be sitting here on my instagram all

[33:31]day you should start a new club of people that get that get the frozen pizzas and the captain

[33:35]crunch instead of doing this podcast right when they're when they're doing the thing where their

[33:40]their cart looks like a cuban uh refugee ship coming to florida because they've got the

[33:44]mountain dews oh the six pack of mountain dews lined up on the sides you know so they have more

[33:48]time looking at you rob oh my god i'm just like you fucking piece of shit with no family like

[33:53]how dare you make a good decision and by the way man i kept him crunched the roof of my mouth on a

[33:58]bagel at lunch today i had an everything bagel for lunch and my i i can't even eat anything else

[34:02]the rest of the day it's just like clock feeling going on back to what he eats every day you got

[34:08]your shit cut up by everything bagel yeah

[34:11]oh man

[34:14]listen i don't want to shame but that's fucking soft dude

[34:16]this bagel has everything you don't feel until later you're like what did i what like was i

[34:24]eating razor blades why is the roof my mouth feels so bad see and that's why i have the fitness guy

[34:29]because i've never once thought like what did i eat earlier and now sometimes i look at my thing

[34:32]and i'm like what did i eat earlier oh my god i can't believe i ate that already i ate a whole

[34:36]bag when people come to me for fitness advice well you're a lot stronger than we think you are

[34:43]rob roland going

[34:44]how's it going with you well i just want to say one thing i'll tell you what's the most stressful

[34:47]thing about spotting is i there's a guy who went it's when your nuts are hanging in someone's face

[34:51]while you're holding the damn bar on the bench well no that you that is if that's not the most

[34:56]stressful thing that there's something wrong with these nuts across imagine dragons the only person

[35:01]i spot is my wife and i did do the thing where i touched the bar the other day when she's benching

[35:06]and literally she was benching and it stopped and so i helped it up and she goes what the

[35:11]fuck are you doing don't touch the bar and i was like oh my god

[35:14]like i got yelled at for my bad spot are you doing just the two finger thing too you're just

[35:18]giving just a little bit a little bit and she was so fucking pissed at me and i was like and you

[35:21]know what i totally understood actually i was like yeah that was a bad spot i'm really sorry

[35:25]like i i couldn't even be mad at her for yelling at me she was right the only worst thing is i

[35:29]remember about a year ago i was at the gym and i was i was doing a bench and this guy came up to

[35:32]me afterwards he's like do you need a spot i think he was worried that i was gonna have a problem

[35:37]like not being able to get it up like get get that's what i'm gonna start calling me oh no oh

[35:44]yeah like aaron's busted ass this guy is worried that he's not gonna get it up

[35:48]uh mark that rob where are we at here

[35:52]i think when that guy comes over he says i'm worried you're not gonna get it up he's not

[35:57]talking about your bench i fucking hit my leg what a gym you go into yeah those aren't kettlebells

[36:04]sir rob rolling out going how's it going with you so last week i teased that i had my jeep stolen

[36:10]and i got a list of everything that was in the jeep my dad uh sent me this

[36:14]a list of everything so i'm gonna put it up on the screen here and show you guys

[36:17]because it is so full of shit right so i'm just gonna read this left just read the left-hand

[36:22]column don't go to the right-hand column yet ready things in car okay yeah bowling ball so

[36:28]again i did have the grenade in the bowling ball in the car this is all stuff that was stolen

[36:32]out of my soft top jeep so this is a two-door car so picture a two-door car with all this

[36:36]part of a weight set two racquetball rackets three racquetballs two sets of goggles a sweat band

[36:42]three pairs of meshed

[36:44]shorts now why would i have three pairs of meshed shorts in the car bad things can happen in one of

[36:48]the car i like the only part of a weight set like which part of the weight set i don't even get what

[36:53]that was like did i was it the weights or the bar that doesn't make any sense 50 bucks 50 bucks i

[36:59]yeah i tried to associate the price on all these but obviously you know you you've said uh often

[37:04]that you leo's kind of like you you know and you're you might be right because your handwriting

[37:09]is horrible rob how the hell just like how are you putting like this is a visual

[37:14]joke but how are you putting this list up here and you're saying please don't look at this list

[37:17]of cds which is obviously the first thing that i'm going to although i'm gonna get who cares

[37:21]i can't i'm gonna get to the cds keep going rob what else is on the list of shit that got stolen

[37:26]next thing is medicine for wet band medicine for dick too big so that is on there uh so i've got

[37:33]two t-shirts i've got a golf golf chipping net okay so i was walking around in a car with a

[37:43]this is by the way this is from memory i remember that i actually remember that being in your car

[37:47]i i know i remember that best being in your car yeah

[37:51]so we're about halfway through the list uh

[37:56]oh there's like way more something primo edition i don't even know what that is

[38:01]uh imagine if oh that's what it's cranium primo edition so now we get to the board games

[38:06]i had cranium imagine if a cd adapter to radio a cd case

[38:13]i didn't know what that was

[38:13]i did put three-fourths of a tank of gas on the list because i want that back for my insurance

[38:17]and then two pairs of tennis shoes so in this car i had two pairs two pairs by the way i'm wearing

[38:23]shoes walking around so i have two pairs in the car i'm walking around two t-shirts two three

[38:28]things of mesh shorts like can you and i was married at this point what is jenny doing why

[38:33]doesn't she have me on track what is her problem i just love how you put three quarters of it

[38:37]taking gas because you're like well they're gonna call bullshit on me if i call the full tank so i

[38:43]take the full tank right like i'm gonna save the eight dollars and not have them call bullshit you

[38:48]know and this was the car that they eventually the car this car i went to a high school reunion

[38:54]and i parked it my dad was like don't park in the bar parking lot it's gonna get hit i was like

[38:59]that's very smart so i parked it outside wait why would it get hit in the bar parking because it was

[39:03]like you know he's he's convinced that people are gonna drive away drunk from the bar you know this

[39:06]is just one of those silly dad things so sure enough we get out uh out of this high school

[39:11]reunion we walk out some guy in a pickup truck with an american car and we're like oh my god

[39:13]fucking flag on the back goes fuck yeah like jams it just floors it goes right by me peels out takes

[39:21]a right takes a left peels out of the uh parking lot directly into my car which i had parked right

[39:27]outside the parking lot hits it so hard that it spins around over the curb his license plate falls

[39:33]off into my car the guy spins around and drives away and my friend goes holy fuck he just hit

[39:37]that car and i go yeah that's my car he goes oh shit and then walks away and i was like so i was

[39:43]like so my dad's like oh my god he just hit that car and i was like oh shit and then walks away and

[39:43]my dad fucked me he screwed up i should have parked in the parking lot i wouldn't have gotten

[39:46]hit that car was in the shop for six months got back to me for a month i then filled up with all

[39:51]this shit and then it was immediately stolen so i was like well that car is cursed i don't want it

[39:55]anymore goodbye i want that cranium game back so yeah it's primo edition so here are the cds that

[40:00]were in the car i've got the jbs right what's that who's the jbs james brown's backup band

[40:05]so i've got uh bob marley four disc set al green i've got one two three four they might be giants

[40:13]got the donnas classic soundtrack oh the donnas is such a great i'm gonna put some in the background

[40:22]sing it sing a donna song for me but you can play my game and then it was an all-girl rock band they

[40:28]were so fucking good i used to play them all the time i would have been i would have been so pissed

[40:31]right now if i had stolen your car if this was my home i gotta be honest with you so i also want to

[40:38]insurance were two bags of just garbage so once again he did so all of this stuff is in a two-door

[40:43]car plus garbage i got a mighty wind soundtrack and then let's see what else i got cd wise i've

[40:49]got elton john's greatest hits cat steven's greatest hits tracy chapman uh hits of the 80s

[40:54]time life bluegrass johnny cash live at folsom prison oh that's a tough one what an asshole

[41:00]they stole that shit willie nelson and johnny cash vh1 storytellers great oh by the way i'm so good

[41:05]you need that back and then i've got albums i have no recollection of owning whatsoever

[41:09]run dmc greatest hits black sabbath greatest hits do not remember owning those

[41:13]at all might have been insurance fraud on my part i'm not sure got the dr dray 2001 so i was

[41:19]wondering where that cd ended up i love how some of these you're claiming are worth 15 and some are

[41:23]14 like you're putting the actual price and no depreciation or anything no i don't know i well

[41:29]this was the time where like cds like this like rolling stones the london years that was a four

[41:33]disc set 35 bucks remember you go to a store why did you price the elton john ones at 14

[41:38]and dr dray at 15 i don't i have no idea there's no way there's no way i don't know

[41:43]way i did much work i mean look at the handwriting i obviously did this i guess as fast as possible

[41:47]i'm sure what happened is my dad was like hey can you get me a list i need it in five days i was

[41:51]like okay and then six days later he's like hey do you have that list i was like oh yeah i got it let

[41:55]me send it to you what are the bottom two after dr dray i can't read your hand rolling stones hot

[42:00]rocks and rolling stones the london years which was a four disc box set so that is all the shit

[42:05]that was in my car probably not worth it probably all gonna get cut but god i'm a slob and this is

[42:10]what happens when that happens you get a check for all that so

[42:13]the car got stolen and they and they sent me a check for the car and they paid about the same

[42:19]that i had paid for it when i bought it because by the way this is the car that i bought when i

[42:24]traded in the mihata because i realized that having a convertible uh rear wheel drive car

[42:30]does not effective in minnesota winters not great great for going out and having one woman be able

[42:35]to sit with you in a car that ruled now normally that one woman is usually just russell and i

[42:39]hanging out but uh that was awesome what

[42:43]not so good when i traded that in i got the jeep the jeep was immediately stolen

[42:47]run into and then stolen hey listen i'm gonna go here's a challenge for you guys i'm gonna go to

[42:51]the bathroom you guys talk amongst yourselves and i'm gonna come back and later when i edit it i'm

[42:55]gonna see how much you guys floated this thing without me the main host the other thing i was

[42:58]gonna do for rolling going that we could talk about is when you guys get invited to a party

[43:04]do you feel obligated to bring something like do you have to bring a thing of wine do you have to

[43:09]bring something to eat if you get invited to a dinner if you just show up with yourself are you

[43:13]an asshole or do you have to bring something what is your style when you get invited to something

[43:18]and you're not sure whether you should bring something or not luckily luckily but you guys

[43:25]have wives that will save you right that's what i was gonna say like luckily i don't have to think

[43:30]about that too often and so yeah so i feel for you russell because i have no idea like i would

[43:36]normally not bring anything unless it was less like you knew it was like a potluck for a ball

[43:41]game or something like that you know like bring something over but i'm not sure i'm not sure i'm

[43:43]not sure but yeah it's just like hey we got a few couples few people coming over like yeah i'd have

[43:49]no idea i went to something tonight it was a few people coming over it was a couple couples and

[43:53]then you know random rush showing up solo but it was nice you never know when are you supposed to

[43:58]show up with something and are you a jerk if you if you roll in with nothing so i had to bring a

[44:03]bottle of wine just because i figured then i don't even have to think about it i can just put it on

[44:06]the table and at least i'm not the jerk but aaron what do you guys bring when you show up to an

[44:10]event i know you haven't been anywhere in a year and a half no you're right

[44:13]right i mean why he brings cheap ass aluminum foil he brings aluminum foil

[44:17]it's earth-friendly aluminum foil i mean wine's the go-to unless you're going to someone's house

[44:22]who yeah who is uh you know doesn't drink then yeah wine's an easy one like hey i brought this

[44:28]wine you can open if you want or if not keep it and people are always happy to have that and that

[44:32]that's that's an easy one the other question is if you shown up with wine at someone's party are

[44:38]they obligated to open it let's say aaron you're having people over they show up with wine you have

[44:43]to open it and serve it or you can just keep it i think if it's a small party then yes i think if

[44:48]it's just yeah if you're the only one who brought wine if it was a small enough thing yes you do

[44:52]have to open it and serve it i think that but you should you should definitely go there not expecting

[44:57]to take it home with you if it's not open oh no absolutely not you don't love that idea that

[45:02]russell would bring a bottle of wine to the party and be like well nobody drank it that seems like

[45:07]a george costanza thing so good it's a seinfeld episode if you're not gonna drink it and you're

[45:12]not gonna drink it i'm gonna take it home with you

[45:13]take it home by the way the fact that i left and i came back and you guys were actually having a

[45:17]good conversation don't get that into your fucking heads okay that's not the way this

[45:20]shit's gonna work all that shit's getting edited out i'm gonna chop it up make it sound real sloppy

[45:25]well to the tens are tens of listeners if they like the what they've heard in the last three

[45:29]minutes they can listen to our secret podcast that we've got you're gonna love the text chain

[45:34]that rob's not on all right so let's get into talking i know i do the talking heads talking

[45:43]but we've got tina waymouth on bass we've got her husband chris france on drums and then jerry

[45:49]harrison on guitar so this album the album before this one on the tour they got done

[45:56]and a reporter was talking to uh uh chris and tina and said what are you going to do now that

[46:02]david's never going to play with you guys again and they said what are you talking about and he

[46:06]goes yeah i just talked to david bernie he said he's quitting the band he's never going to play

[46:09]with you guys again they're like uh so in response they were like well we got to play with you guys

[46:13]figure out what's going on we don't know if we want to stay with them or what and we need to work

[46:17]on our marriage so they went down to haiti they did what any good couple would do when they're

[46:21]trying to save their marriage they went down and got way into voodoo rituals so they went down to

[46:25]haiti they were doing some voodoo stuff they're playing on the drums down there and then

[46:29]eventually they got a place in the bahamas where they just started jamming right and eventually

[46:34]they invited david bern to come down and said listen there's been so much stress on you as like

[46:39]the the lead person in this band he has written all the songs he'd write

[46:43]all the lyrics he'd show up and be like the main host a little bit he was like the main exactly and

[46:48]i feel how he feels where it's like you have this idea and then people fuck around and don't do

[46:51]exactly what you think at all times and then when you edit it you're like you yell at it you say

[46:55]this wasn't a funny joke fuck you you know stuff like that and this wasn't a funny joke we're gonna

[47:01]just jam and come up with songs as a jam and then you're gonna go and take the lyrics and you're

[47:07]gonna write all the lyrics for this album on your own and that's exactly what they did and of course

[47:13]uh so david burns that's why a lot of the lyrics on this are kind of just nonsensical because he

[47:18]actually had writer's block so he's like well i'm just going to kind of do some dada type lyrics and

[47:22]see if it works but what's really interesting about this album is that the way they made this

[47:26]album and i think i think this you get a lot more out of this music if you know this because i'm a

[47:29]smart music guy they basically every song on this album is just one chord and it's just one jam

[47:36]layered over and over and then what they did is that they would strip out layers throughout the

[47:41]song so at some point you're going to hear the lyrics and then you're going to hear the lyrics

[47:43]all the layers on top of each other you know different rhythms going on different instruments

[47:47]different noises and then they would pull some out and put david burns singing on top and

[47:51]so this is like garage band before garage band yeah and and what they're doing is no wait a

[47:56]minute what do you know they did this before anyone else they're trying to do african music

[48:01]they're doing fellacuti's music that's what they're trying to do that's exactly what fellacuti

[48:07]did starting in i mean his earliest records were from the late 60s early 70s

[48:13]i did he was looping the stuff in like this who's fellacuti i don't i don't know enough

[48:17]about him tell me about fellacuti i love when i have a beer and i fill up a koozie with it

[48:21]he's a nigerian musician who's uh you don't feel probably the most famous african musician he

[48:29]himself played mostly saxophone i think but then uh was the composer uh his most famous

[48:34]bands were africa 70 and nigeria 80 um or sorry egypt 80 and he uh uh and also

[48:43]famously his drummer was tony allen who brian eno said was the greatest drummer who ever lived and

[48:47]that was exactly what they did was they played long grooves they their songs were 15 minutes

[48:52]or more long and they did this very very technique of we're gonna layer things i didn't notice that

[48:57]when aaron sent me this clip and said oh you can fast forward to 11 minutes and 30 seconds in i was

[49:02]like classic air clip so this is fellacuti yes this is equalization of trouser and pants

[49:10]say the title again so you can hear it

[49:13]here this thing's kind of a slow burner which is kind of my preferred groove of his but this is

[49:20]exactly what and i read um chris france's autobiography called remain in love which i

[49:25]found on russell's libby app uh and he said they discovered the album shakara by uh fellacuti which

[49:32]came out in 1970 or so and so man alexa kept trying to play that when i was trying to play

[49:37]shakara today that has the tracks lady and shakara on it yeah tell you something aaron

[49:41]when you're asking to hear music and alexa's like

[49:43]what the fuck is your problem so i i think there are good grooves on this album for sure but they

[49:48]are full-on borrowing and trying to do things that were already done and in some cases they

[49:53]come close in some cases they don't i mean that's the other problem is that a lot of fellacuti's

[49:57]music was his lyrics were political and so to take afrobeat and turn it into dadaism is like

[50:03]borderline offensive i mean uh yeah i mean that's definitely something we can talk about with this

[50:08]album is is borrowing versus you know it's like it's like oh this music is popular now that white

[50:13]people are using it and it's like oh this music is popular now that white people are using it

[50:13]do it it's yeah but i want you to listen listen to the first song here born under punches and

[50:18]just listen to how you hear the same things repeat over and over and over by the way that was a good

[50:25]uh good three sentences thank you i really like that shortening it up but you can just hear it

[50:33]to repeat yeah they add stuff and take it away but it's always the same there's no change there's no

[50:38]nothing i'll tell you what

[50:43]uh tina waymoff the bass player she's getting it done on this album she's driving this album

[50:49]yeah i think it's actually the i i don't want to pick on chris france because i actually

[50:54]jokingly had to say i don't want to interrupt you here but take a look at these hands

[50:59]i mean that's got to be an all-time like top top 10 lyric that we've heard on the list so far

[51:06]take a look at these hands yeah that's enough to say about that it's so good russell don't

[51:13]ever apologize for interrupting aaron it feels good like it makes you feel like a real king

[51:17]like i i have to do shit all the time i don't want to when i get a chance to interrupt aaron

[51:21]oh i savor that moment that's so great so take a look at these hands and then russell you want

[51:28]to meet it so that song was about uh watergate it's kind of it's setting the tone for now the

[51:32]first part of this album especially where you're hearing a lot of funk russell you wanted me to

[51:35]play this part yeah one thing if you jump to the end did you guys kind of hear these

[51:38]beeps and blips it's totally different than what we've heard maybe maybe other than uh

[51:43]what's the band that i can't stand again what's that radio today what's that band oh yeah

[51:48]what's that band kid a i think you're referring to radio other than radio head we haven't heard

[51:54]a lot of like i would i don't know if this is techno i don't know what you'd call this but

[51:57]this is like there are beeps and blips there's all sorts of stuff going on here it's different

[52:00]than what we've heard right rob play this quick

[52:03]we haven't heard this type of thing too much have we no and they're doing it in 1980 so i think this

[52:13]is a guitar that they ran through a keyboard oh there we go yeah they're definitely doing a lot

[52:17]of cool tricks well whatever it is i know that if you look up hold on sorry if you you look up

[52:25]milf's dishwasher question mark no if so if you if you look at genius when you look at the lyrics

[52:33]on this they actually call it beeps and blips as a thing on this song it's like we talked last week

[52:39]about gibberish lyrics or a few weeks ago we've

[52:43]talked about hand claps finger cymbals they call out beeps and blips i was like wow this is crazy

[52:48]what other artists do beeps and blips it turns out namesake of his podcast back does beeps and

[52:55]blips check out this song we dance by back we dance alone finally a song i can relate to

[53:03]i mean speaking of the roof like me dancing alone at the roof

[53:06]so we got a few beeps and blips here but back's not a one-shot pony on here he does multiple

[53:12]ones and when i listened to that song by the talking heads i was like this sounds like a

[53:17]super mario brother character like getting a bunch of coins right like you're getting those coins and

[53:22]you're getting like right keep it going russell keep going with the beat i love it it turns out

[53:29]beck also did a remix album called hell yes where he mixed famous songs from one of his uh i forgot

[53:36]the album but he mixed famous songs with game boy or nintendo 8-bit video game clips check out this

[53:42]song hell yes by beck which is a remix of one of his songs oh yeah there's some beeps and blips

[53:50]there this is like 8-bit nintendo music right here that's yeah it takes me right back to

[53:57]childhood so when it comes to making albums with beeps and blips and nintendo sounding songs who

[54:06]does it better beck did it better beck definitely does you're damn right matt i don't know

[54:12]guys that song is so funky i mean that's a funky opening song i think that's a great opening song

[54:17]and now we get to um all right uh cross-eyed and anus no cross-eyed and painless here we go

[54:23]a lot of this music is when you listen to the lyrics super super paranoid

[54:32]i think that's a lot of the theme of david byrne's work

[54:37]what do you say why is it paranoid what like is that the

[54:42]lyrics or why do you hear that yeah it's kind of about somebody who's losing their identity

[54:46]he's not sure what to do about it and then a lot of his other albums are about like

[54:50]you know dystopian futures and kind of getting worked up i mean did did you ever see the video

[54:57]for um once in a lifetime what it looks like dude dude's stressed in that video he's like

[55:03]and all the time he would talk about how he moves around on stage he's like if you ever

[55:07]see david byrne perform he is he is uh and if you said oh he's a paranoid guy you would not

[55:11]be surprised by that

[55:12]i read an anecdote about cross-eyed and painless and russell referenced the facts are simple or

[55:17]facts are i can't remember exactly how the lyrics go uh that this this to me sort of sums up to that

[55:24]part anyway this band's approach to life which is like god grant us all the confidence of some art

[55:30]school kids he was struggling how to fit in the lyrics of facts are simple and someone said oh

[55:35]well rap music is a thing now just just rap it because they play and then they and then the story

[55:40]is that they played him curtis blows these are the breaks and he was like oh yeah i could rap

[55:45]and so he just like walk out there and be like oh yeah it's fine you don't have to sing anymore

[55:50]you can rap and walk out there and think you could do it by the way aaron curtis blow update

[55:55]how is curtis blow doing as far as i'm aware he's fine i looked him up last week to be sure but yeah

[55:59]the head the heart transplant seems to be okay so i'm very glad to very glad about that i'm also

[56:04]heart transplant all right so that's our weekly curtis blow update i wasn't listening to what

[56:10]aaron was talking about but i'm sure he said something that was very wipe off the whiteboard

[56:14]where aaron has gone two weeks without talking about curtis blowing yeah sorry curtis that's

[56:21]right this is a good one i appreciate that joke russell sorry i tried all right aaron what's this

[56:26]what's this next song called the great curve that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis

[56:33]all right here we go the other one is i mean listen to this

[56:38]we got some bongos on this drum we've talked congas before we got bongos here but this is

[56:44]another one where you can hear that looping and and there's a ton of layers going on here

[56:50]it's this is like a good hen house you know what i mean lots of layers what's a hen house what are

[56:57]you talking about a good hen house what am i missing here what the fuck don't you understand

[57:01]about it they did it for five minutes and tony allen would do this for 15 minutes just one guy

[57:06]just on the on the drum set and then additional percussion as needed but it's just different

[57:11]there's no there's no comparison what's going on what's going on what are you talking about

[57:17]we were talking about a hen house yeah i'm talking about the drums man what's our podcast called you

[57:23]and i are doing rob and rob and the silent guy rob and the silent guy yeah rob and that guy that

[57:29]fell man can you explain to russell what a hen house is please and why that has a lot of layers

[57:33]no oh my god

[57:36]it's a hen house is where hens are in their lane it's a chicken eggs yeah okay fine how about this

[57:43]it's like a chicken coop it's got a lot of layers don't they have levels not layers no the chickens

[57:49]are laying the eggs they laid the eggs these are my layers guys if you got that joke originally

[57:54]can you text the becks line i got 802-277-BECK say i got it just let me see did you get the joke

[58:01]if you didn't get it text and say i didn't get it there's layers they're chickens they're laying

[58:06]they're laying eggs sorry rob give me a better heads up next time and i'll laugh harder at your

[58:10]joke next time all right once in a lifetime oh crusher this is a banger and this is the song

[58:20]that really got big partially because the video got tons and tons of airtime if you get a chance

[58:24]you should watch this video and you're oh this song just wails amazing what green screen how

[58:30]much better it's gotten since this video and is that are they doing the backwards guitar sound

[58:34]that sounds like a beatles or a prince trick right

[58:36]is this an all-time song or is this too popular where music fans don't like it

[58:44]aaron matt what are your thoughts on this song this song is an all-timer isn't it

[58:48]i'd say it's like a top 500 all time i don't know but that's pretty damn good right

[58:53]it puts me in a place right was this ever in a john hughes movie like something about this song

[58:58]just makes me feel like i'm you know nine and watching a movie that i shouldn't be watching

[59:03]kind of feel you know i'm i'm telling you when you watch a movie that you shouldn't be watching

[59:06]you watch this video i had like like tactile memories of being a young person watching mtv

[59:11]watching that video like i hadn't realized how many times i'd seen that video but i could name

[59:15]all the parts where he's like squatting down and then doing the dance watch it sometime it's it's a

[59:20]it's a totally a wild one the one thing i noticed on that song and i think they played it too you

[59:25]heard it a lot on cross side and painless that second track you heard a little cowbell and i

[59:30]gotta be honest guys i've got a little fever and the only prescription is more cowbell so

[59:35]i'm giving you a list on the greatest songs ever featuring the cowbell love it you know what i've

[59:43]realized is that russ gets all excited for his list and then we play this long sound thing and

[59:46]it's so boring and it takes all the momentum it's it's no less boring than my list but you guys you

[59:52]guys accommodate it no we talk about this russell positive positive yeah first up on the list we

[59:58]have to talk blue oyster called don't fear the reaper when it comes to the cowbell right yeah

[60:03]obviously famous for the

[60:05]sketch on snl i was sitting next to the drummer from blue oyster called at a sailing thing out on

[60:12]long island i was with somebody and they're like oh there's a drummer from blue oyster called that

[60:16]was and i i almost turned i was like hey i really need some more cowbell and i was like i bet this

[60:21]isn't even a joke i thought there was gonna be a joke there and i know what you guys are saying

[60:25]how did you sit next to the drummer for blue oyster called and not realize it the thing is rob nobody

[60:30]knows the drummer from blue oyster called that's where the sketch came from will ferrell said he was

[60:35]like who the heck is this guy that is playing the cowbell on the song because it's kind of faint

[60:41]and so there's actually disagreement between the band on who actually played the cowbell on the

[60:47]song the drummer's brother claims he played it and a producer also claims he's played it so

[60:52]not no one's even sure who actually played the cowbell i'm don't fear the reaper you know what

[60:57]i would say that that's a weird story that they wouldn't remember but then again i listened to

[61:00]this podcast sometimes like from a week ago and i have no recollection of things we've said so i

[61:05]totally get it next up on the list we're going back to kind of the 80s here this is by the lips

[61:13]incorporated the song is called funky town you guys remember the minneapolis band this is a

[61:17]minneapolis record is it really is it yes are you saying that funky town oh yeah listen they're

[61:25]really hammering that bell are you saying that funky town is minneapolis i think it was recorded

[61:31]in minneapolis yeah there's a whole the songwriter dang

[61:35]staple you guys the songwriter and the producer was named steve greenberg and he was living in

[61:42]minneapolis and he was bored with it and he wrote this song about moving to new york rob this guy

[61:48]was living your life oh minneapolis to new york and he was in minneapolis and he was writing this

[61:53]song all about moving to new york and it became this huge hit there's a whole thing at the

[61:57]minnesota historical society yeah i always thought that song was about like if you owned a circus and

[62:03]you had a lock on the door and you had to have a key to get in that would be a pretty fun key

[62:07]won't you take me to funky town no fun key it gets me in the circus it's a fun i try so hard not to

[62:17]laugh and then when you say it again and i do i'd laugh anyway the repeating of the joke is one of

[62:22]my main weapons in my arsenal rosie we we we've talked about this you have to just say oh come on

[62:27]you have to start trivia for you we're gonna see if you guys can get this this song hit number one in

[62:33]28 countries funky town oh it was it set the record for the most hit number one in the most

[62:39]countries what song beat it eventually 30 years later it held the record for 30 years uh what's

[62:46]it called i'm gonna say i will always love you no correct side what is that the korean song the

[62:52]gingham style gingham style incorrect i guess

[62:57]living la vida loca you guys are all incorrect it was some song called hung up by madonna

[63:03]35 years later in like the mid 2000s you heard a song hung up no i don't think so you hear it in

[63:10]the background right now yeah yeah no one's ever heard of this shit that reminds me of

[63:14]which means i should not bring it up on the podcast no that reminds me of what happens

[63:19]sometimes when russell has to call somebody before a date yes you know what you should

[63:25]try using my funky town bit i think that's a good way honestly the cleanest joke i thought

[63:30]we were going to get out of the word of hung on this podcast

[63:33]next up on the list time has come today do you guys remember the chambers brothers at all i love

[63:38]this song i don't think i crank it up rob crank it you hear that cowbell oh yeah this was in

[63:46]the five bloods right matt wasn't this the opening credits in the five bloods

[63:52]uh this yeah i know this was in that oh what was that funny movie oh yeah girl interrupted

[63:57]this is on the girl interrupted oh god so this is like psychedelic rock they

[64:03]were trying to add like a tiktok and so they decided to do it with dueling what's it called

[64:08]cowbells but the interesting thing when they first made this song they played it on a bumper of a

[64:14]cadillac they would instead of they didn't have a cowbell so they would play it on a cadillac bumper

[64:18]and that was what they originally used and then they decided eventually someone stole it from

[64:22]them and they had to actually buy a cowbell i was like that's pretty cool fascinating i bet they i

[64:27]wonder if when the cadillac got stolen if it had two bags of garbage in the back seat

[64:30]and three

[64:33]one cowbell aka bumper two bags of garbage by the way i didn't want any money for that garbage i

[64:40]just want to point that out again i'm an honest person how pissed would you be if you stole rob's

[64:44]card it's like you're digging through it's like wait there's just a bunch of banana peels and

[64:48]shit in here well you know what i told that story to rosie the other day and he's like you should

[64:51]have put a bunch of women's underwear on there and then they buy you a bunch of women's underwear

[64:54]doesn't make sense and he's like yeah sense that's why you'd want women's underwear gross

[65:02]gross

[65:02]that's not the new ones what oh aaron

[65:08]well if you wanted you wanted women's underwear from a gin soaked bar room queen in memphis

[65:14]the next song on the list is honky tonk women by the rolling stones matt one of your one of

[65:19]your favorites my sister lives in memphis

[65:21]you hear the cowbell in the background oh yeah it's right there

[65:27]and this was played by their producer jimmy

[65:32]miller who originally played with george clinton and the parliaments and clinton later said aaron

[65:37]that when jimmy miller left to go play or produce the rolling stones he took a lot of the funkiest

[65:45]stuff over to the to london so he was actually a producer with your boy george clinton jeez this

[65:51]is good stuff when the rolling stones tried to do honky tonk after that guy left it sounded like

[65:56]this it's just not the same you know what i mean like mick jagger and the rolling stones

[66:02]i'm bird oh that's a good one russell i'm telling you fellas though you're gonna want

[66:14]more cowbell on this podcast so the final song that we gotta hear is called grazing in the grass

[66:20]by hugh masekela i don't know if you guys remember this one but check it out yeah can you dig it

[66:26]oh such a smooth tone know this one yeah

[66:32]and you can hear he's doing polyrhythm on the cowbell this is the only one so this is african

[66:37]music right this is the only one a lot of people you're right on here a lot of people say that

[66:42]hugh masekela he's a trumpet player but a lot of it he's from south africa a lot of people say that

[66:47]his melodies have a lot in common with african influence pop including paul simon and the talking

[66:53]heads that's right so i thought that was a great way to end the list love it that kind of same

[66:57]similar influence right and one of the last albums of tony album tony allen's life was

[67:02]an album called rejoice with hugh masekela very cool love it russell i gotta have more cowbell

[67:10]shut up about who's dead and listen to this clip i'm clicking

[67:13]jesus christ by the way uh real quick rosie we'll go on a little side bend here that you know

[67:21]defy bloods the fact that delroy lindo did not get nominated for best actor is a tragedy crime

[67:30]yeah great movie

[67:32]highly recommend it and what was the the the whole album or the whole movie um there was one of our

[67:40]albums we listened to was played what's going on thing what's going on yeah it's it's great so

[67:46]highly recommended but delroy lindo i didn't know the dude's name beforehand but holy cow to that

[67:51]guy he acted his his pants off i loved him in star wars too delroy lindo calrissian um so

[67:58]that by the way that was on today's uh wheel of fortune

[68:02]before every time nobody got it no matt you're 100 right i'm with you on that man

[68:07]what the fuck you've never said that to me in my life where that makes you feel that

[68:11]that's bullshit oh is that is that grazing in the grass is that a cover of the friends of

[68:17]distinction or is that friends of distinction a cover of that one because the version i'm

[68:21]familiar with is the friends of distinction version i'm not familiar with that version

[68:25]okay well you're hearing in the background right now i that's i to me it's the part with the

[68:32]friends of distinction is that that's my alarm and it's a great way to wake up every morning

[68:37]just like yeah grazing in the grass i can dig it he can dig it we can dig a chicken dig it you can

[68:41]dig it we can dig it all right so i'm getting that look that i get from my from my co-host here

[68:46]what i'm talking too much i actually was really enjoying your rendition of that i mean you can

[68:51]you can play but i like how you were singing that it sounded good do it again thank you

[68:55]come on let's hear it come on we can dig it she can dig it they can dig it and you dig it

[69:02]from 69 i gotta figure that the hue uh what's his name's version was before that but yeah i'll play

[69:09]that for you guys after the podcast this dumb shit podcast we gotta get i think the hugh massacala

[69:14]version was recorded in 1968 it made it to number one in 68 matt it's another one of those like

[69:20]everybody's just recording the same song like yeah fuck it it's a good song everybody record it i

[69:24]think that's so funny all right houses in motion this one they pushed his voice way to the back of

[69:31]this mix

[69:32]this is the last good song on the album and i would told i was just going to say that i think

[69:38]this is where the funkiness ends and we start getting put to sleep after this yes what happens

[69:44]you guys like this song you like i think it's a nice groove yeah i like it yeah you're not

[69:49]not into it russell no i do like it but i we talked about this on the post game show last

[69:56]time where i thought when we hit talking heads we've reached the point where we're at albums

[70:01]that can no longer claim the title of the album we're not going to claim the title of the album

[70:02]they're in the top 10 right i felt like we hit a we hit a breaking point where we dropped off a

[70:08]little bit with this talking heads album but i really liked the first half the album i thought

[70:12]the first half is pretty awesome yeah it's a it's a great it's a nice album but i got to admit i did

[70:17]not listen to the back of this album half of this album more than just a few times like it's no hell

[70:22]no i i didn't need it so seen and seen and not seen you can tell here where they were a jamming

[70:30]like a jam band and then you can tell here where they were a jamming like a jam band and then you

[70:32]he just put the lyrics over top which is totally different than he's done it in the past you can

[70:36]hear it here was just like it sounds like he kind of wandered into the room and is like hey what's

[70:40]going on like you know is this i read that robert palmer was played percussion on a lot of these

[70:48]songs that's the same robert palmer that did all the 80s hits well you know because he was their

[70:53]neighbor in the bahamas where they recorded this after they went to haiti they went to the bahamas

[70:57]and the bass player and the drummer said hey you know uh david come on down we're just jamming just

[71:02]hang out listen to this and he was like okay i will and then robert palmer there was there actually

[71:07]on um rehab because it turns out that he had been addicted to love and so he was trying to get over

[71:12]that you might as well face it you're addicted to love that's my one other fun factoid what i was

[71:18]going to give about this album was that they were also recording maybe it was back in new york and

[71:22]not in in nasa they were recording next door to acdc doing back in black they were acdc was in

[71:32]amazing that's so wild that they could have just wandered around and been like oh hey uh well not

[71:36]bon scott because he was gone but hey brian johnson you're recording back in black that's wild imagine

[71:40]you're playing a song that's like okay we're gonna layer this on top of this and we know next

[71:46]door they're like yeah i love those it's such a fun it's like okay we're gonna we're gonna have

[71:52]one guitar one bass and one drum and then everybody's just gonna scream and it's like

[71:55]okay there's an album we got it listening speaking of listening listening wind

[72:02]this should be called no one's listening because if you hit like the sound seven to eight on this

[72:08]album you are fast forwarding through like i want to give this album more credit because i did enjoy

[72:13]the first half but man the final two or three songs are pretty well this rough this is the

[72:18]penultimate song and then the last one there's a funny story with this last one this is the overload

[72:23]sounds like pink floyd to me and i gotta admit when i picked a time for this song i just moved

[72:28]it randomly because it's all this it's all can you imagine a worst way to end an album

[72:32]like especially after last week where we had burn this disco out yeah and then the polar opposite

[72:36]song which is the overload but the story behind this song is kind of funny and that is that

[72:41]david burn and the talking heads heard about joy division right here's joy division

[72:48]now how in the hell do you make those connections you can still dance like a media

[72:56]they never listened to joy division they heard about joy division somebody explained it to

[73:02]them so they were like well we're gonna make a song like joy division never listen to it so then

[73:06]they came up with this that's it's about on par the funniest part is and it kind of explains david

[73:13]burn in a nutshell is that he later heard joy division he was disappointed like his version

[73:18]of what he thought joy division would be can you imagine if you were joy division you're like hey

[73:22]we're parroting you guys this is what we came up with and they played this like pink floyd

[73:27]sad song what i don't even know what that i got a feeling listening to joy division they don't

[73:32]care about too much they're just like

[73:33]also tragic this is the only joy division song i know and i really like it but i've never listened

[73:41]to any other joy division that oh that overlord song or whatever overload or whatever it's called

[73:47]it's gotta be i know we don't want to be negative but that's not one of the best songs we've heard

[73:51]on the list so far it's got to be in the bottom 10 it's way down there with a couple of those

[73:55]velvet underground dogs i think the closer to nevermind was also shitty but i and the realer

[74:01]joke rub

[74:01]you know i don't care about too much they're just like meh

[74:02]yes no well lady my life's terrible no it's not a no it's not a joke because i you know i was not

[74:08]invited to aaron's wedding and that's something we can talk about later aaron's aaron's first

[74:11]aaron's first dance he loved joy division so much his first dance at his wedding was this song

[74:14]and his wife said yeah it kind of fits the mood of how i feel pretty well actually

[74:22]all right so that is it for remain in the light let's get to my favorite part

[74:31]the

[74:31]the

[74:32]I did get some clarifying emails that people said it's our favorite part because it's the end

[74:39]and i was like well that's

[74:40]you know it's like what my dates say it's kind of always disappointing yeah

[74:46]oh it's 4 30 already time for bed what's the highlight of your day been the end of this date

[74:53]oh that was too serious thank you i'm gonna take you to lips funky town that's what i'd tell them

[75:02]and that too that was part of it all right listen is this album this album is 38 on the list and i

[75:10]knew that it's not a big deal didn't edit that in earlier what is it matt 39 like i said this album

[75:16]is 39 on the list okay uh is this album rolling well tone that means it's perfect at 39 everybody

[75:23]oh my god everybody we we open we got the rolling stone magazine new list bruce springsteen on the

[75:28]cover let's see what's going on where are the talking heads which remain in the light 39 perfect

[75:32]love it that means it's rolling well toned did it get rolling boned okay that means it should not be

[75:37]39 it should have been 38 it should have been 37 if you're russell maybe it should have been in the

[75:42]top 10 or is this a rolling groan you did not like this album it should not be 39 it should be lower

[75:50]on the list 40 41 so in that sense it's not as good as uh rolling stone thinks it could be you

[75:55]you ran home you opened the magazine you looked you said no damn you jan venner whatever his name

[76:01]is

[76:02]uh matt what do you think rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling uh you know i'm tired

[76:07]tonight so i'm just gonna go with this is uh rolling uh wait a minute i forgot what you said

[76:15]what did you say again you think you like it or don't know because when i try to do the joke

[76:18]don't do that because you can't have it both ways you either got to play the game or don't

[76:26]yeah we better start this podcast over all right um i think it's too high in the list

[76:32]so the the number is too low so i need it to be farther down the list which means it needs to have

[76:38]a higher number so it makes sense to what is that one well it's like a good cash register it makes

[76:42]sense you know yeah so no i think i there's there's too much good stuff coming up the uh

[76:48]it has one good song one excellent song what song what what is the best song

[76:53]the one that rob did the parody of at the beginning of the one that everyone knows

[76:59]once in a lifetime yeah once in a lifetime

[77:02]so you know like that's like a top 500 song i don't know if it's top 100 song but it's a top

[77:07]500 song and so because of that i think it gets up here and then just what you know the bands that

[77:12]came after depeche mode uh in excess they opened up the the 80s i think to this kind of genre of

[77:19]music so there is something to be said there but uh for the most part it's uh rolling groaned is

[77:25]that right that is correct all right rolling groaned damn man i'm impressed uh aaron what do

[77:30]you think

[77:32]i read is this a rolling well toned is this a rolling bone or is this a rolling groan you make

[77:37]the decision and your time is now so go ahead i don't recall now if it was david burn or brian

[77:43]you know i think it was david burn who said we were going for afro beat we fell short but we

[77:48]made something else that was you know good or great i don't know what he said uh i think there's

[77:53]some really good grooves on this album but um you know when we talked about voodoo uh i felt that

[77:59]voodoo was rolling well toned and not rolling well toned and i think it's a really good groove

[78:02]bone because there were other albums that voodoo was um inspired by or taking ideas from that were

[78:08]much further down on the list and in this case they were either fully um mimicking felakuti's

[78:17]aphrodisiac album or they were inspired by his album shakara or any number of other lps that he

[78:22]put out most of his stuff was two sides that were you know 30 minutes long total and um there's just

[78:28]no way to me that any there's some good grooves on here but it just doesn't work out and i think

[78:32]doesn't touch anything that that felak did so and i don't even know if he's on the list at all so

[78:36]this uh to me is a hard rolling groan well i thought you were gonna say a hard uh rolling

[78:43]bone that's what i'm gonna start calling my penis oh right i don't like what aaron always calls it

[78:49]the great curve offline either that's good it's getting a bit much aaron that's what i'm gonna

[78:54]start calling my penis the great curve that's enough cody chestnut has a great line he says

[78:58]i got a hard dick with a curve that's all you deserve yeah what kind of fuck are you

[79:02]all right we're getting to that point in the night where i'm more interested in playing my

[79:07]sound effects than listening to anybody so russell what do you think listen to aaron in particular

[79:10]no aaron come on you know i love you mona i came into this album not expecting a lot like i said

[79:18]i thought when we heard this when i was like okay we've reached a breaking point where we're no

[79:22]longer in the top tier albums we're down to a second tier but i have to say i really like the

[79:28]first half of the album way more than i thought i would i i

[79:32]love the bongos i love the cowbell i thought there was so much going on with the first half

[79:37]for me it's unfortunate the second half just didn't live up to the first half so i'm gonna

[79:41]give it a rolling groan but i like the album way more than i thought i i would like it it's

[79:46]interesting isn't it because when you think of talking heads you think about cycle killer you

[79:49]think about take me to the river you think about that war zone song and this album is just so

[79:54]funky but then even like the main hit off this album isn't as funky as those opening tracks i

[79:59]love those opening tracks i love the way this album opened i think it was great i think it was

[80:02]great hey rob agree take a look at these hands like that it's hard to beat that that line too

[80:08]we gotta give it credit well that's what you know luke skywalker said when he saw the millennium

[80:12]falcon take a look at these hands uh so he said take a look at their hands hands well also in

[80:20]die hard when he was trying to get up to nakatomi tower look at take a look at these hands gruber

[80:23]uh all right but luke only had one hand for a while briefly

[80:32]you're right aaron i was trying to bring the energy too high up we gotta bring this baby back

[80:36]down thank you i appreciate it this is a rolling slow dome is what i wrote how did i pronounce that

[80:44]rolling slow down you know in my head when i wrote this down it seemed like a good idea this is a

[80:49]rolling slow dome it gets so slow at the end yeah i mean we're talking about beats per minute this

[80:54]thing was getting way down those beats per minute we're getting way too low so you know what those

[80:59]beats get too low no no no i keep it at about a minute and then i'm like oh my god i'm like oh my

[81:02]god medium pace right yeah i think uh let's see beats i think if you're you know it's like being

[81:06]a farmer you gotta have lots of beats uh i'm so sorry if it's like a farmer in the revolutionary

[81:12]war lots of beats per minute men oh no yes i'm still going okay wait no i can do another one i

[81:17]can do another one what comes after men beats per minute made listen what if i was making juice out

[81:23]of beats and beats per minute made like oh i love this juice it's so good guys i could do this

[81:28]i don't need any jackasses on this podcast listen next up though that's it

[81:32]for the talking heads my favorite band apparently next up we've got david bowie the rise and fall

[81:37]of ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars let's ziggy play guitar when you want am i right like

[81:46]we've reached the point where these albums are no longer top 10 eligible right yes i think there

[81:51]are some after this to know that maybe not top 10 always this one this one's not even top 100

[81:56]eligible you don't you don't think we're at a tip yes no outcast ain't coney i think this is

[82:02]an outlier for you jack beck did it better one thing we've talked about on an earlier podcast

[82:10]was where the different strokes on the congas we didn't even get to talk about the strokes on the

[82:15]bongos and i looked them up and they're very similar but they have a different name have you

[82:19]guys ever heard of the slap play for the bongo no rob do you want to know what that consists of

[82:25]you i do you cup your fingers as you strike the head and then you relax your fingers and let you

[82:32]let them bounce off the head that's the way you play the bongo rob you guys could laugh no i'm

[82:39]trying to figure out i'm trying to figure out how this works i'm trying to do it yeah or there's

[82:43]also the heel tip movement which is the fourth fourth stroke for the congas you

[82:49]you rub your hand on the head and rock from the heel of your palm to the tip of your fingers

[82:57]that's the way you do the heels what if i release the episode news just this

[83:02]no setup no nothing it's just russell saying the different strokes of the bongo and that was the

[83:06]whole episode that's like we need a new we need a new clothes let's get a new clothes no that's

[83:13]like they have that uh they have that new drive-through head shop where you can get a bongo

[83:17]bongo yeah it's drive-through i've just yelled

[83:21]don't worry we're stopping way before any of that

[83:25]you
