Episode Rerelease: The Band- The Band (1969)
[00:00]in 2020 four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums as decided by
[00:04]rolling stone magazine this resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music excoriated the
[00:10]order and led us to making this podcast we are far from experts we promise to do almost no research
[00:15]all opinions are our own unless you disagree please sit back and enjoy beck did it better
[00:21]from 1969 nice this is album 57 the band by the band guys i wrote a song and it's playing on k-rap
[00:29]okay i gave k-rap some money they're playing it i shouldn't admit that out loud but it's true
[00:33]pay to play is alive and well it is luckily k-rap has very very low standards there's so many things
[00:39]in the k-rap uh ecosystem i'm worried this song is a little too subtle can you guys just let me
[00:44]know if you could if you got the message of it okay we know subtlety is a so and again the podcast
[00:51]here is where i say something and you guys talk and we just don't you don't just stare at me when
[00:55]we're i think i was gonna put it on k-rap man when we want to hear the radio we want to hear the radio
[00:59]i thought that was really clever quick i accept your apology here we go what's up everybody today
[01:06]we got a song going out to anyone who's been on and wondered could i eat this oh yeah gotta stand
[01:14]at the farmer's market i also have a prank that i pull i try to make up fake food and i sell it
[01:23]to those hippie assholes they'll eat anything i sell
[01:29]and approve it here see what i mean you'd have to be the dumbest shithead on the planet
[01:36]to try to eat dandelion greens dandelion greens yes they're bitter put them over heat
[01:45]not much better some people say they're a weed just add black pepper but the people who buy them
[01:51]are the biggest fucking moron i'm gonna do for your liver subtle that's wake up in the morning
[01:59]and i picked them from my lawn yep i priced them at eight dollars a bunch for these stupid rich
[02:07]morons i've never been eight dollars well that's just who i am there's a guy who sells crystals
[02:18]next to me even he thinks i'm a scam
[02:21]they're bitter put them over heat
[02:28]not much better
[02:29]the whole time i was like okay can i think of a rhyme to say fucking moron
[02:52]so i'm just in my living room like yelling fucking moron
[02:57]podcast for you
[02:59]although i am telling my kids this year when they go to school tell talk about daddy's podcast
[03:06]try to get some downloads you know what i'm talking about welcome everybody we got back
[03:09]did it better we are back after a little bit of a break we are all the way up to album 57 this is
[03:15]the band by the band so when i say the band i'm talking about the album when i say the band i'm
[03:19]talking about the band but when i say the band i'm not i'm not that's the band the band you guys
[03:25]understand what i'm talking about now this isn't a bad company situation where they also had a song
[03:29]called bad company on the album bad company by the band bad company if this album would have had a
[03:33]song called the band we would have been set so who plays the music russ is giving me the start over
[03:39]sign i don't know what that means i'm actually really impressed we've got a phone that closed
[03:45]on me uh we've got three guys here that they heard about the night they drove old dixie down
[03:50]but what if they crash when they're driving dixie down they could get in an accident
[03:54]i hope this doesn't cause a dixie wreck
[03:59]and speaking of which russell russell and uh minnesota heard you and russell
[04:04]guys if i were a barker and rob's girly strip show tell you what i'd do i'd lock the door
[04:10]tear my shirt and let my river flow wow wow that sounds like something from last week sounds like
[04:16]a liz ferris song i got matt minneapolis matt how are you doing great thanks for having me rob
[04:21]matt's actually so tired he was telling us about the podcast he's like i'm so tired so
[04:25]we might hear a little bit less from matt uh rosie out in california
[04:28]rosie how are you doing i'm doing great i don't have anything topical to say about the album
[04:33]tonight but i do want to say that we're recording on labor day so to all the workers out there
[04:37]please remember today is the day to look up how much your ceo makes and work less yeah and if you
[04:44]guys try to start a union i swear to fucking god you're gonna find out who's in charge right here
[04:47]okay don't even think about it okay i've got a little video i want to show you
[04:53]it's called the it's called unions not your friends okay i borrowed it from sam walton
[04:58]it's a great video it's a good times all right let's get right into it he doesn't have to pay
[05:02]us minimum wage as long as we get tips right unionized looking into that after the in the
[05:09]post game show oh no oh god i can't wait okay let's see how do i turn this computer off right
[05:14]after this podcast all right let's get in guys we've got two separate texts oh to the back okay
[05:21]how do you text the becks line 802 277 back you can text the back line we've got a couple now
[05:26]i can you can write in anything and have a
[05:28]celebrity say it see if you guys can guess who the celebrity is okay everyone kck's from here
[05:33]just wanted to tell you that russ has a normal size penis see what i mean like you can get these
[05:38]guys anything listen to this one see if you can tell these are not back these are just ones i did
[05:42]on my own time today school needs to start i have so much free time everyone joe buck here what i
[05:48]saw on the field was disgusting it was russ's penis see what i mean like it's so good all right
[05:56]let's get into the best i've
[05:58]got to show you guys this one also comes with a picture so i might have to explain it to you
[06:01]after he says it here look what i found a picture of a film's pubic lice okay so that was a quick
[06:06]one saying that was kendrick telling us that somebody and somebody took the time to text us
[06:11]they said now we did get a lot of text saying hashtag pubic lice i don't remember why people
[06:15]were supposed to say hashtag pubic lice to us it was very it was to prove that they to prove that
[06:20]they listened to the end of an episode you were supposed to give them a dollar oh then i got less
[06:24]than i would have expected actually if that's how many people are listening to the end of the
[06:26]episode guys we can coast toward the end let's just put it that way i can stop editing by the
[06:31]end but they did send me this picture can you see the screen it's little plastic crabs and they're
[06:37]called jazz crabs and they're all playing their own little instruments so you have a crab with
[06:40]like a little saxophone you have a trap crab with this little drum kit and stuff like that yeah so
[06:45]somebody found a picture of crabs playing jazz and said those are aaron's pubic lice so aaron
[06:50]aaron has your pubic lice gone away yet if i had them they'd probably be playing jazz in my
[06:56]in my room i don't know if they're going to be playing jazz in my room i don't know if they're
[06:56]in my dreams so i like that i appreciate that listener for i love how rob's just decided to
[07:02]double down on this topic a few weeks ago this was in an email and hey this should probably be
[07:06]taken out but instead of avoiding it rob's doubling back and he's just harder it's really
[07:11]become a kind of a colloquialism just to call them crabs but i always prefer the term pubic lice i
[07:17]think that's most more visceral when i taught stds in my class i'd be like i'd say pubic lice because
[07:22]i thought it was so great because crabs are kind of cute right it's like a tiny crab you could think
[07:26]that cute but like a pubic lice seems like a little more menacing i mean people eat like
[07:30]crab legs right right as many as they can right they're so tiny i can barely i can barely get
[07:38]these legs off this is one that both criticized me and puts aaron on blast oh what rob's bbq takes
[07:44]are absolutely abhorrent let's not bury the lead but also it should be noted that aaron once took
[07:49]me out for bbq tofu and vegan mac and cheese in oakland hashtag aaron's pubic lice all right so
[07:55]that message
[07:56]let's break this down into two parts number one i haven't been thinking about this obsessively
[08:01]for the last three weeks my bbq takes really truly are abhorrent yeah it was bad yeah i said
[08:07]that you're there for the sauce that's all that matters and i realized you know what my favorite
[08:11]bbq really is what pulled pork i love it that means you're not you have you have nothing to
[08:18]say on the matter right now it is it's it's like what's that equivalent of like you going to a
[08:26]some people would say like you're getting a steak and saying i want a medium well kind of you know
[08:30]like some of the steak snobs yeah i dropped that girl fast when she pulled that stunt
[08:35]no i'm not paying for this overcooked meat or like what's your favorite album sergeant peppers you
[08:41]know what i mean like it just you're gonna be a little more thoughtful okay so if i'm showing off
[08:45]barbecue wise what do i order it's is it brisket that's the only thing that makes me a true barbecue
[08:49]i think that's the only thing you can go with no the only thing is to know the specialty of the
[08:54]house because there are places that would spend i'm
[08:56]this is the same comments i made before there are places that would specialize
[08:59]in pulled pork and so the only thing is to know what the place does well and whatever is on the
[09:04]chalkboard whatever i love on the special of the day yes i love barbecue sauce i cannot help it
[09:09]and you know what i'm gonna take a brave stand and say i'm right with my barbecue sauce steak i
[09:15]think a good barbecue sauce i can't do it sorry guys i'm trying uh this weekend i was at the spa
[09:20]and the fries i got i did put mayo and ketchup together and i thought somebody was like oh
[09:26]it's true i'm classy i'm a classy guy you got french fries at the spa well don't that's my
[09:33]rolling going i cannot answer any follow-up questions about french fries at the spa that
[09:37]is my rolling going i don't want to give it away but okay and now everybody's waiting on i can't
[09:42]wait to hear more about your french fries at your spa actually now you have me on the edge of my seat
[09:48]that is kind of the whole story now that you say it like that this this bexter is someone who's a
[09:56]vegan barbecue and i will say if you're talking about barbecue tofu rob it really is all about
[10:02]the sauce because there's only so much you can do with tofu so then the sauce really matters so
[10:05]so was this was this person a vegan aaron that you took out no or you just didn't want to be
[10:11]their friend anymore no i just there's a great there's a great trying to push them away is this
[10:16]like trying to get them to stop coming out to oakland visit my house is so small black owned
[10:24]vegan restaurants are a real thing they're
[10:26]black and brown on vegan vegan uh eateries are a real thing they're trying to
[10:31]expand food horizons around the world and so there are several of them in oakland i like to
[10:36]frequent them because i don't turn this on us like you're like we're the shitheads do not do that
[10:41]vegan barbecues are fine if i went out and visited you and you took me to one i would never forgive
[10:48]you okay unless i was a vegan you would like it i i do think this is like a breakup move like
[10:54]if i was going out with a girl and i didn't want to see
[10:56]her anymore and i didn't have the guts to just say hey this isn't working for me i'd start taking
[11:00]her to barbecue vegan restaurants and then she would have to break up with me it's a great
[11:04]it's next door to a beautiful beer place with a nice patio you order your beer
[11:09]delicious i'll need it all day any day it's in the same state as an in and out what does it have
[11:16]to do with anything like who cares if i went to a place and it was like okay you get to pick between
[11:21]the tofu and the vegan mac and cheese which is what probably like almond cheese on there or
[11:25]something right some nut
[11:26]yeah cashew cheese yeah yeah cashew outside i'm not having that okay i'm not eating anything that
[11:32]has nut cheese on it no thanks i'm in for it anytime i would eat the vegan barbecue all day
[11:37]okay so the next day i would eat animal barbecue because i'm i'm that i contain multitudes and
[11:43]which one which one tastes better the animal one the animal why even why not just go to animal
[11:48]barbecue twice because it's not next door to the beer place and listen there is not i mean there's
[11:55]recently now some really good you know uh carnivore barbecue in oakland there was not at the time there
[12:00]was not great carnivore barbecue around so i just don't get have we talked about this before about
[12:06]like the fake meat at burger king like was there a huge demand for fake for like vegetarians to go
[12:14]get a whopper i think there is though i think if you're a vegetarian or vegan traveling and i've
[12:18]always and i've said this and i've said this for years and i'll still say it they're right
[12:21]vegetarians and vegans when we look back in 50 years we're going to look like
[12:25]the same way we look back at like doctors using leeches when they talk about us eating meat
[12:29]because pretty soon it's going to be like lab grown meat it's going to be just fine it's not
[12:32]going to hurt the animals i'm here for it i love it i i think being a vegan or vegetarian is correct
[12:37]and i do think that if you're a vegan or vegetarian and you're going out with your
[12:40]friends and they're going to burger king it's really nice to have an option that's not like
[12:43]lettuce with ketchup on it like i i'm totally down with those that fake meat stuff i think it's great
[12:49]if aaron took me to a vegan barbecue and i am not a vegan i would be so fucking mad
[12:55]i mean it's it's it's i just it's it makes no sense to me it's like it's just it was right
[13:01]next door to be revolution you can sit on the patio they bring your vegan barbecue over it's
[13:05]tasty i mean aaron thinks his house is nice because he's next door to a really nice house
[13:10]he's like our house is so great next door the biggest house oh my god it's so awesome
[13:14]rob i gotta know are you more minnesota would you be minnesota nice about this or would you
[13:19]be new york up front about it if aaron you went out to visit aaron in oakland you um talked to
[13:25]who you've never met because you weren't invited to his wedding and they decided to take you to a
[13:29]vegan barbecue place would you say something or be like i don't want to go there would you just go
[13:34]and act like it was super good i would happily go i would happily go to a vegan place i wouldn't say
[13:39]i would be i would say this is so good and then when i got on this podcast i would drag aaron's
[13:44]happy meal ass up and down main street for an hour and talk about what a shit show was of all
[13:49]the places to go eat in the bay area and aaron takes me to a vegan barbecue which just sounds
[13:54]like a joke
[13:55]it sounds like a prank show like oh let's go to the vegan barbecue ha ha ha you know it's it's
[14:00]it's delicious danny glover eats vegan barbecue right here in oakland is this solely is this
[14:07]solely vegan is that what you're talking about there you go matt knows matt's looking it up
[14:11]uh solely vegan is the one so you know so the whole argument is that it's right next to this
[14:15]beer place right so we've got the national giant hamburgers and great pies which is right next to
[14:20]the vegan place wait a minute wait a minute wait a minute japanese sushi wait man what was that
[14:25]name again the first place nation's giant okay burgers and great pies okay so why would you go
[14:32]anywhere else that place sounds like a fucking rock japanese sushi right next door we've got
[14:36]mosaic greek and turkish fast food next door across the street we've got buttercup this sounds
[14:41]like a night what is this i think buttercup is a place where people go to meet hookers if i
[14:48]t-bone steak and eggs turkey patty and egg oh my belgian waffles biscuits and gravy
[14:53]wait this is right across the street from the beer place but they don't bring it right to you
[14:58]you can sit right on the patio at beer rev and they bring you i mean i haven't been there for
[15:01]like six years the only time i can say the only time on this podcast for matt gets aggravated
[15:06]with erin is when he goes to bad restaurants that that wakes matt it sets matt right off yes
[15:11]you can't say vegan is good i'm not i i stand by it i mean i haven't been there for a long time but
[15:15]can you imagine you're you're eating fucking barbecue tofu and dandelion greens or whatever
[15:20]right with like a little bit of sauce on there yeah and you look over and the place next to you
[15:24]is having giant hamburgers and pie and you'd be like huh you'd be like it'd be like when everyone
[15:29]else is out having fun and you're stuck inside like sweeping it'd be a real cinderella moment
[15:33]you're stuck with erin and you just realize like oh fuck i i would rather listen to this album for
[15:38]a whole year than be stuck watching somebody eat giant burger and pie two foods by the way i don't
[15:43]think go together like i don't think anyone's ever had a burger that been like i'm wondering
[15:46]if it's burgers and pizza pies let me look it up oh no it's pie
[15:50]it's definitely a sweet pie it's like sweet pie it is it's pie yeah they've got what kind of pie
[15:55]do you think goes with a burger maybe pumpkin a savory potato people don't people go to diners
[16:01]and get a cherry pie burger and then pie at the end or something no you can't have a burger and
[16:05]then pie that's that's no good burger gets followed up with ice cream or something there's
[16:09]it's pie is not the dessert you can't just go to ice cream every time rob you brought this up
[16:13]numerous times in a row where you don't like desserts and then you just go right to ice cream
[16:17]every time and every time i have ice cream i'm like
[16:20]this is so good and i'm so lactose intolerant it's worth it i saw a thing on tiktok where somebody
[16:25]took a brioche bun put a scoop of ice cream in it and then put it in a waffle maker and i woke my
[16:30]wife up and i showed her she was so mad at me but it was worth it because i was like hey there's a
[16:34]chance get that waffle maker out let's put some ice cream sandwiches on there all right let's get
[16:40]into everybody's favorite segment rolling going matt's still looking at the map matt everybody's
[16:45]segment not talking about the band
[16:50]you know honestly i swear i trust aaron i would i would let him take me out but you just know like
[17:02]oh i'm in for a real shit show like i would if i was visiting aaron i would have some sliders like
[17:06]in a bag in my pocket that's wise and i just take them out and kind of nibble on them be like solely
[17:11]vegan has probably been usurped by the vegan mob as the preeminent vegan barbecue place in oakland
[17:15]vegan mob is the place danny govler danny glover likes rigs
[17:20]rigs i'm getting too old for this shrimp
[17:23]i want some satan rigs
[17:27]i better stop before i go off you would have to watch that rob your cholesterol might get
[17:33]dangerously low if you went out with aaron for too long be like every heartbeat is moving this
[17:40]blood so well i don't get lightheaded when i stand up or sit down this is crazy
[17:44]all right rolling going aaron rolling going how's it going with you oh it's going great
[17:50]thank you um took a vacation last week with the family we went to washington state to the san juan
[17:56]island good idea to fly during covet i don't know but we did it anyway two things while we were gone
[18:02]now they're all out in their garage together yeah we're all quarantined together we'll see how it
[18:06]goes got a bunch of rapid tests stocked up so we're ready um two things while we were gone one
[18:11]uh finally finished um my the first tony morrison book i've read this one's called jazz it took me
[18:18]about six times checking it out on russell's favorite app libby but i finally finished it
[18:23]great book uh highly recommend it was much less linear than i expected it was very
[18:29]esoteric it took me a long time to get through it but i did it so i'm proud of myself and i'm
[18:33]telling you guys wow what a strong recommendation i had to check it out six times it took me forever
[18:37]to get through it highly recommend celebrate my wins the other thing i talk about is
[18:42]while we were in san juan we found a uh san juan island we found a place that would do picnics
[18:48]like you could order a picnic and they would put it together for you and they said call us order
[18:53]your picnic it was a wine shop you get sandwiches whatever so i called them i said hey want to order
[18:59]these two sandwiches plus the little lunch box thing and you know this is my number could you
[19:05]please do that they sent me a text in return and i just want to tell you if you call someone and
[19:14]they text you back that is some hero stuff like i was out there trying to be like
[19:18]do i need to answer my phone because they're going to call me back i left him a voicemail
[19:21]they sent me a text shout out to text messaging i did some research on the history of text messaging
[19:26]this technology is actually fairly old invented in like what 84 and then the first sms around oh
[19:33]i don't know the time of 32 and the nazis were sending dude these are sms's though this is
[19:38]different from cellular and then i think it wasn't until 1999 or 2000 that messages could
[19:43]be sent between different networks uh i still you know you guys know i love to text i think
[19:48]that's a perfect form of communication so shout out any restaurant that will text you back when
[19:52]you call them i love it what do you like to text well that's the thing is like here's the thing
[19:57]texting was around in 2000 we guys we could have been sexting in college and we were not we really
[20:02]missed the boat like that's all it's all over you couldn't have been sexting because you would
[20:06]have been texting the one person that has a cell phone remember people in college when they had
[20:10]cell phones we made fun of them we're like oh so special you have a cell phone there's no sexting
[20:14]plus they didn't have good cameras yeah well maybe that is good maybe that's what i need
[20:18]more blur all this hd camera stuff no thank i just got a text from rob talking about how great
[20:23]texting is you guys know it texting is the highest form of human communication guys i also got to
[20:28]give a shout out to the rosetta stone rosetta stone you know it's making languages uh translatable
[20:33]for so many years god that fucking rocks just like talk to each other and i also got to give
[20:37]a big shout out to cups and string like just being able to communicate across a great distance
[20:41]fucking rules carrier pigeon yeah i will say sometimes when i'm bored in class i'll just
[20:48]write and it would blow the it blows their fucking mind every time like i just recently
[20:53]got unlimited data on my phone or like unlimited yeah unlimited data it fucking changed my life
[20:59]like i don't give a shit anymore if i'm on a wi-fi or anything i'm just like yeah fuck it i'll watch
[21:03]these videos or whatever maybe research academic papers or whatever and i don't need to be on the
[21:09]wi-fi where like somebody could trace it or whatever you know whatever the deal is it's not
[21:12]a big deal but i don't care because i'm not going to get a charge of like you spent 100 because you
[21:18]live streaming drag bingo over your phone or something worth it by the way
[21:22]i will ask this maybe a little dating advice i'll piggyback off this this is not rolling going for
[21:30]me but what what do you guys think about use of emojis in texting or do you guys use emojis or
[21:36]is that like a little kid thing or what are your thoughts about emojis i'm gonna say i'm gonna say
[21:40]to that red 100 okay that's what i'm gonna say i'm gonna say an emoji to you that's how big
[21:46]important i think it is emojis are perfect they're the
[21:48]perfect way to say like a text you're like oh you do the open eye one where you're like huh
[21:52]or you say something silly and it's the upside down face yeah right or you're like hey what's
[21:57]up and then you send the eggplant water splash and peach emoji i mean they have so many uses
[22:01]there's actually a lot of emojis that are used in dating apps and a lot of them have these
[22:05]meanings that you don't like i've had to look up numerous times what does x emoji mean or what
[22:10]does x emoji mean there's a lot of x language what is the red stop sign what does this mean
[22:16]when they send me a picture of a police and then a pregnant woman
[22:18]and a bunch of money signs yeah what does it mean when it just says russ and then uh santa
[22:28]claus and then the eggplant and then a smiley face in the spurt i shouldn't say spurt i'm sorry
[22:32]i said spurt on the show no more saying spurt officially no more saying spurt thank you
[22:38]so russell what were you saying what what's your what's what are you saying with emojis
[22:44]i was just asking you think emojis are a good move to be texting as a
[22:48]one-year-old man or is it emojis so we're gonna see emojis and be like what is this i'm out well
[22:53]the problem is you've got everybody who's over the age of about 66 67 who doesn't use exclamation
[23:01]marks or doesn't have any sort of um you don't know what their what their texts are supposed
[23:06]to be so my mom sent her a text like hey you know can you come over do the laundry and she just
[23:11]sends sure you know and it's like hey you know i don't know sometimes maybe she's excited to come
[23:18]you know long search but i think with the emojis you finally you you've gotten rid of that you
[23:24]know like what does this text mean kind of a thing yeah you know they're smiley faces or sad faces or
[23:28]you know things like that which has helped out the communication that's true you can do tone
[23:32]with emojis matt that's really smart speaking of text from from uh the older generation can i share
[23:38]a text i got from my aunt recently okay sure uh you guys give terrible dating advice and so my
[23:44]aunt tried to give me terrible dating advice too and i wanted to see what you guys would think of
[23:48]the show so so i get this text from my aunt and she's looking out for us doing very very kind very
[23:55]thoughtful but she sent this and i was like this seems like a bad idea but i wanted to see what you
[23:58]guys thought she says we'll just call this person sarah that she's talking about or i better not use
[24:04]sarah that's matt's wife's name we'll call her okay let's go rob we'll call her stephanie janice
[24:09]all right janice janice text says in all lowercase letters of course there's no caps no emojis nothing
[24:18]janice at the hair salon is available she's turning 40 in the spring never married no children
[24:24]tall slender very nice looking and blonde lives by herself in city you could check her out by
[24:31]getting a haircut all spring for it so my aunt essentially told me you should go into this hair
[24:36]salon and get a haircut to check out this person who my aunt found out is single i did i told you
[24:42]that i that i had a super attractive hairstylist when i lived in vermont uh-huh and i would go
[24:48]because she'd sit there she would she's forced to talk to me she touches me and like rubs my head
[24:54]and then at the end she's like you look so good and i'm like this is the greatest date
[24:58]ever so so she she tells me about this this hairstylist who's single i don't know i don't
[25:05]know where this comes from but then the next text again all lowercase no punctuation this one says
[25:11]but use an alias so she's like go in there but don't act like you're my nephew because she
[25:17]obviously told her
[25:18]the the stylist about me i think whoa and then she says she's also a hawkeye fan but how is this
[25:24]supposed to work this is what i said matt i responded i'm like this is a great text why do
[25:30]i need to use an alias and i say question mark exclamation mark question mark like why do i need
[25:36]to use an alias you're wondering but you're also yelling yes and then and then she says no just
[25:43]wait until the end of the haircut and if you like her fess up and tell her that i made you come in
[25:48]relationship off by lying right away and then two minutes later she changes her mind and says
[25:53]actually no you better use your name i showed you a picture of you she'll know it's you
[25:57]that would be the equivalent of like wearing a ski mask and then like chasing her to the car
[26:04]and then at the end take it off the mask be like i'm just russ it's me i was lying before i'm not
[26:08]actually i don't want your purse i actually want to go out with you like you can't start the day
[26:12]by lying about a haircut so i wanted to see what what do you guys think is that great a advice
[26:18]or is that a barbecue vegan advice
[26:21]a scale of barbecue vegan to yeah brisket i'll give that uh yeah some fried tofu with a little
[26:31]bit of uh hot sauce on the side yeah i would uh i would love to get a free haircut but the idea
[26:36]that you're going in like as a date but only one of you knows it's a date that seems fraught with
[26:41]danger and then you pop out of the cake like it's me it's us that's like that literally is a step
[26:47]you know my aunt she told me yeah it's a step above like being in her bushes outside of her
[26:51]house i mean like this date is going very well for one of us and then the best would be when at
[26:59]the end because my aunt offered to pay for it my aunt would have to come in and pay for the haircut
[27:03]so at least i wouldn't have to pay for that date right oh my god she's gonna be there at the end
[27:07]like your aunt is gonna physically come in the store at the end and be like don't worry russell
[27:11]i've got this would your aunt show up russ would she be sitting on the parking lot like with
[27:15]binoculars looking in to see how it's going
[27:17]i'm not aware it seems like a a way to make the plan go even better that it's right when she says
[27:22]she's gonna pay for it is that she's gonna like give you cash and then you get to pay for it or
[27:26]she's gonna show up at the end of the haircut and be like i'm here to pay for russell's haircut
[27:30]because i think both are excellent well if she's reimbursing me that doesn't sound so bad but if
[27:36]she did just stroll in and like paid for it while i stood there asking for pennies for the gumball
[27:40]machine that wouldn't look very good it's too bad she doesn't know a prostitute because the same
[27:45]thing could happen it could be way more fun
[27:47]instead all you're good is a haircut
[27:51]scalp massage yeah other professions she could hook you up with yeah i mean you'd still have
[27:59]the apron and the chair but you know the rest would be very different and the hot cream uh
[28:06]can i put this hot shaving cream on the back of your neck please uh it would be a date though
[28:11]where they would they would be guaranteed not to walk out probably halfway through
[28:15]it's a bad sign when you're
[28:17]like i have to go to the bathroom and you see him driving away in the car and then you're like wait
[28:22]a minute oh no you only got half a haircut yeah what do you do yeah well they finished the haircut
[28:27]like if i fessed up halfway through like i think it's going well i'm like hey it's me this person's
[28:32]nephew russ and like is she just gonna finish the haircut be like oh what a fun date did i ever tell
[28:38]you guys about the super bad haircut i got in new orleans yeah i texted you guys about that do you
[28:42]remember that yeah you still have now isn't it uh yeah not now because i grew it long because i was
[28:48]hoping to grow a mullet for my next meet but that was the one where she uh she shaved my back down
[28:54]like a foot down and so it looked like i had a windshield wiper take off the hair on like the
[28:59]middle part of my back that she could reach under my shirt it was wild did i tell the story on the
[29:04]air wasn't there a cocktail involved so yeah so i went into i went into i i love getting haircuts
[29:09]when i'm traveling it's one of my favorite things to do i think it's so fun but i went to new orleans
[29:13]and the lady was like oh okay well um you can come back in a half hour and i'm just the secretary
[29:20]and then i said okay and she goes no just kidding on the hairstylist come on in what drink do you
[29:24]want and i was like a hurricane yeah i was like uh i don't know why don't you just make me one
[29:28]surprise me and she goes okay so she makes me a tequila and uh tequila and ginger ale
[29:37]and right away i should have been like okay this is a
[29:39]problem this is a big time problem it's not good so she says and and i think this might have been
[29:44]my other mistake she goes what haircut do you want and i said i don't know just surprise me
[29:47]like i think it'll be fun did she pull out a book no so she goes okay and she whips me around so i'm
[29:54]not facing the mirror oh she starts cutting my hair right so she's cutting my hair cutting my
[29:59]hair cutting my hair and she's like got the razor blade out and she's doing the whole thing and it
[30:02]turns out she gave me like a skin fade with a hard part which i really really liked although
[30:06]my curly hair goes back in too much but then at the end of the day i'm like oh my god i'm
[30:09]doing my eyebrows right and she had a razor out and she was doing my eyebrows and she laughed at
[30:15]a joke i said and then she goes oh no and i was like wait what do you mean oh no and one of my
[30:20]eyebrows was like a half inch shorter than the other one so it permanently looked like i was
[30:23]questioning what everybody said i was like i was like oh really i will never forget this photo i
[30:29]remember ralph sending us the picture of this because i let up with like all these texts and
[30:33]i finally sent the picture it was a it was an absolute i actually i mean i look like i should
[30:38]have been carrying torches in some parade somewhere but
[30:39]it it was a it was a good look for me i thought so russell are you going to go through this uh
[30:45]hairstylist date i don't know i think we got to get the plan a little a little more figured out
[30:49]i don't think i can go in and just do the surprise it's me nephew russ i think i think i have to have
[30:54]a better plan nephew russ is there any good surprise you get at a barber shop i don't think
[30:59]so i think any surprise at a barber any surprise the hairstyle place is very bad uh rolling going
[31:04]matt how's it going with you well rosie did we finish up did we get i'm good yeah that was it
[31:08]that was my
[31:09]the extent of my rolling going yeah okay it goes like this rosie says something we get mad at him
[31:14]and then i don't remember what his rolling going was this time i still think it's about
[31:17]we just hijacked it and took off but not sorry um it was tony morrison jazz and it was shout out
[31:23]to text messaging and now matt it's to you oh yeah that's right we just talked about text messaging
[31:28]my aunt text messaging me that's right okay now we're i got there we took that road yeah all right
[31:34]um good it's been a while since we've talked it's true and you know right after we recorded the last
[31:39]um green day weezer and fallout boy came into town wow to minneapolis and i cannot believe
[31:49]how good weezer is as like a live show and i think they're completely underrated i don't know russell
[31:54]you were there you know we we were there together we went and saw you know the show we didn't sit
[31:59]together but we were there together and we'd comment on it and so um you know i was unbelievably
[32:05]i i just i've got this this theory that if you've been around
[32:09]for 20 years as a band and like still putting out albums yeah you know but like just around
[32:15]number of 20 they've been around for 30 you know like you're just you're gonna put on a good show
[32:20]no matter what you do right i mean you're just you're professional musicians you've been around
[32:23]the block you know what's going on somehow you've got some staying power so i can't believe how great
[32:28]they were alive fallout boy i it's one of those things where i'm like what who that i don't know
[32:35]these people you know who they are anything like that but then i knew 80 of the songs when i was
[32:39]unbelievable you know again whoever their lead singer is and i should have looked it up before
[32:45]the show but again i'm pretty darn tired tonight guys so i'm just not kind of mailing it in you
[32:50]know but he he's he's got to be one of the up there for one of the best vocalists that's
[32:55]out there right now i don't know rosie if you've ever heard of him or what he's got going yeah yeah
[32:59]no he's good uh shit this is not gonna make for good good podcasting material but he's done a
[33:04]couple of guest spots with um mine maybe with like 100 gecs or like one of these
[33:09]my brother's gonna call in again about this one but yeah i think his name is pete can't remember
[33:14]the last name but he's a great singer and yeah super great voice russell russell i'm just gonna
[33:19]interrupt real quick russell what what in right now when you're thinking of what 100 gecs is what
[33:24]do you think that is just by context clues i want you to guess what 100 gecs is 100 gecs yeah i don't
[33:32]know it could be a club it could be a podcast it could be a newsletter from a cult i have no idea
[33:40]what 100 gecs is it sounds like something i did my sophomore year of college i think on a dare
[33:44]i think they're an electronica band matt's looking it up now matt's gonna figure it out
[33:49]so now there is like on an album okay keep keep going man keep going uh but then but then green
[33:54]day came up i couldn't wait to see green day and i was so excited to see green day but the whole
[33:59]damn show was nothing but billy joe armstrong
[34:02]whatever his name is just trying to pump the crowd up the whole time you know doing these
[34:06]callbacks all the time can i hear you let me hear you let me hear you you know just that type of
[34:12]stuff and if they would have just played their song it was over the top and i just want them
[34:20]to play their songs because when they play their songs they were so good but it was 90 of the in
[34:25]between songs was him trying to get the crowd and he'd do this thing where he'd like stand back and
[34:30]like you know like
[34:32]the hulk hogan like oh can i hear you and then he did this hand pump thing all the time and i'm
[34:37]like what why does he need to do this he doesn't need to do this kind of a thing and so it just
[34:42]absolutely turned me off i don't know russell you were there did you have any other uh takes on it
[34:47]my thoughts my kind of going through them from beginning to end i thought weezer was fantastic
[34:52]too but i do think weezer had to be the opening act for that show i think the green day and
[34:57]fallout boy they're so they're faster it's louder there's a different energy that comes out of it
[35:02]came with them than weezer so i think weezer had to go first but i thought weezer was really good
[35:06]fallout boy i had a lot of fun with like you were saying man i don't know their music but when they
[35:11]started singing i'm like i know this song i know this song and they're fun songs to sing along with
[35:15]too and that singer was the lead guy was really good but i had a ton of fun at green day man maybe
[35:20]i didn't notice all the callback stuff admittedly i did have a few cocktails that night so i was
[35:25]probably like primed for enjoying green day excuse me do you have any red wine and hot chocolate
[35:30]okay what about tan and gin and then put some maple syrup in there because i don't have any
[35:37]simple syrup no i've got molasses for something tonight is it blackstrap molasses i'll have to
[35:43]go get it i don't know no he's got to go heat it up please go eat it is one of my if i told the
[35:48]story in the podcast about my celebrity sighting with green day that i ate dinner with them once
[35:52]i never told the story yeah you have once or twice yeah you're at the east bay california band and
[35:59]one night i was out for dinner with my wife and her family who happened to be visiting we were at
[36:03]this italian restaurant in berkeley sort of unassuming and there was a big long table set
[36:07]up next to us like with its back to me we were like it was you know we were there eating dinner
[36:12]the table was empty and you know pretty soon it kind of starts to file in and i was like why
[36:15]pretty sure that's like is it mike durst who's the basis for green dirt i was like i'm pretty
[36:21]sure that's you know that might be the basis for green day pretty soon they're gonna another guy
[36:24]that you recognize that that's crazy and then billy joe armstrong's
[36:29]down green day was there with all of their families sitting within like back to back of me
[36:33]so they were and they were just like guys out for dinner with their family if you had a time machine
[36:38]i'm gonna ask you to do this okay and will you promise that you'll do this if you get a time
[36:41]machine i will yeah i promise you get you go up to him you get your bottle of red or white or
[36:46]whatever whatever wine you have and you go uh excuse me do you guys have the time to listen
[36:51]to this wine see i should have texted you at the time rob i didn't i froze i don't know what to say
[36:58]they would they would love that the one realization i really had during the concert was
[37:03]concerts are so much more fun than going to sporting events at sporting events you sit
[37:08]there you're waiting in between plays you're waiting in between timeouts um your team's losing
[37:12]half the time you're not having fun half the time when you go to a concert it is so much fun to watch
[37:17]people get into the music yeah to get into the music to have fun like there's never a part where
[37:21]you're like agonizing over i guess if you go to a bad concert or if you're not liking what they're
[37:28]three hours of non-stop fun whereas if you go to a sporting event it's 50 50 whether you're even
[37:32]gonna have a good time green day is sitting there in the restaurant a suddenly they see a sudden
[37:37]electric flash and a machine appears and the door comes down and aaron steps out and says well i
[37:44]guess now is when you come around well i'm jealous you guys are going to a concert you guys
[37:53]see each other say there's some sort of american idiot joke in there somewhere
[37:58]you made it that's it you made the joke russell rolling going how's it going with you
[38:02]rolling going i had a fun weekend this weekend i actually went to aaron's hometown
[38:07]of right next to ankeny essentially des moines iowa this weekend for a family gathering so i was
[38:12]in des moines the home of aaron and so i uh texted you guys a few pictures of my trip because we all
[38:17]love text messaging yeah so i sent you guys a few pictures of my trip but every time we that's a
[38:24]weird thing is that every time we send a text i was wondering why aaron would always go wow
[38:28]i thought he's responding to the what's in the message he's just responding to the text he's like
[38:32]wow this is great we're like aaron i can't do a podcast record uh one of my kids is so sick and
[38:37]he's like wow can you believe this amazing well you'll like this one so the first one i did is i
[38:43]went to the family reunion sat there made the small talk with everyone and then i left and i
[38:48]decided i'm gonna stay in downtown des moines tonight just to see if i can find something fun
[38:52]and you can in downtown des moines any any night of the week so i start walking down
[38:58]you can so i should have texted you that i guess huh but i started walking down kind of the main
[39:06]street they had a they had a couple blocks blocked off by all these bars and there was a kiss tribute
[39:11]band playing in the middle of downtown des moines and it's funny i i texted aaron sent me a little
[39:19]rosie's number so i could ask his brother little rosie where should i go in des moines because his
[39:23]brother still lives in the area so little rosey call him little i don't know why they call him
[39:27]little rosie i don't know why they call him little rosie i don't know why they call him little rosie
[39:28]matt do you my brother is the unofficial mayor of des moines if you need to know something about
[39:32]des moines he is your man but when i told him that a kiss tribute band was in des moines he said yes
[39:38]a kiss tribute band in downtown is very on brand for des moines so so wait a minute so so this is
[39:45]a band that plays kiss songs and they're all dressed up like kiss they're all dressed up like
[39:50]gene simmons and and all the band will get up on yeah is it like customized face paint or is one of
[39:56]them the cat and one of them's a star and one of them's the yeah they all look like they were
[40:01]supposed to look i at one point again i'd had a few drinks at this event too but what i started
[40:07]me do any scrumptious baileys to put in this
[40:09]cash only for that they said i started wondering wait is this a kiss tribute band or is this really
[40:19]kiss because the drum says kiss it's not like their band is called something else
[40:26]but it's a band that's called something else
[40:26]everything says kiss it looks like everything is set up as a kiss concert find out a kiss band
[40:32]that played in des moines we got to get the name of the band because if it's not like rock and roll
[40:36]all night or kissed that would be a good kiss tribute band name because usually usually these
[40:41]bands play on some sort of song or something that you know you can identify the band as a
[40:47]tribute band through that name but okay i'll look but that's great if the drum kit literally just
[40:51]says kiss like yeah it did do you think it's like this podcast where it seemed like a great idea
[40:56]when they started and then like a little bit and you're really fucking sick of everybody else and
[41:00]having to put on the makeup and do all that shit that's what i wanted to ask you guys is it's like
[41:03]who the fuck are these guys like every day when they're in their apartment in des moines and
[41:07]they're like oh i've got to go put on my my gene simmons is that the main guy gene simmons is that
[41:12]right yeah i gotta put on my whole gene simmons up up you know once a week for 52 weeks a year
[41:17]i've got to put on that get up it it kind of makes you wonder what the hell you're doing with your
[41:21]life right yeah i don't know though but if you were in a kiss band and you were playing i want
[41:25]to rock and roll all night i don't know if you were in a kiss band and you were playing i want
[41:26]that song's a fucking jam like if you went nuts for it it was crazy it was awesome because it's
[41:31]like yeah i do want to fucking rock and roll all night and i want to party every day every day okay
[41:36]and i want to do both those things and this band is telling me that i can do that i don't care if
[41:40]it's you know if it's my neighbor roy and i saw him get ready for this three hours early and then
[41:45]have to take an uber and kiss makeup why are you watching your neighbor put his makeup on rob
[41:48]we're on a half date it's this thing that i learned about russell's aunt
[41:52]i watch people and say we're on a date and i don't tell them i don't
[41:56]but i don't know if this is a kiss song or is it ace fraley or who one of one of the band members
[42:01]it might be a solo song from one of them but the song i heard playing when i came up is my favorite
[42:06]kiss song it's back in the new york groove you guys know that song no i don't know that one
[42:12]yes man it was so good i enjoyed it so i saw a kiss tribute band and i thought it was super cool
[42:21]that's your favorite kiss song is back in the new york groove it's playing in the background it's
[42:25]not a normal kiss song
[42:26]i mean oh god aaron gets a video on the text it's gonna blow his fucking mind
[42:35]this is the guy that texted us a picture of birds and said can you believe this and i realize now
[42:39]he's talking about the text yeah he didn't even think about the birds i took a picture on my phone
[42:43]i sent it to you you get it on your phone all the way across the country that's incredible
[42:47]and you're like is this big or not and i was like well get a shampoo bottle i can tell you that like
[42:51]i don't know and then you use a travel size shampoo bottle that didn't help although think
[42:56]travel size shampoo bottle your dog's gonna look huge russell have you done that that's a great idea
[43:01]that's a lord of the ring shit that's what i'm talking about sex with my stuff next to a travel
[43:06]size yes where it looks like a regular size bottle it's like shack holding like cans of soda you know
[43:11]or is this big soda looks small travel size shampoo and then you're like oh what the fuck
[43:18]oh my god i'm so smart matt did you find the name of the band it looks like the band is called
[43:22]the psycho circus which i think psycho circus was a
[43:26]it was an album yeah they must have gone to the kiss tribute band names late they didn't have they
[43:33]couldn't get any of the good ones so i'm trying to find it looks like the band is trying they've got
[43:38]uh job ad postings out there so you can work for the psycho circus but i can't find what the job
[43:44]just is can you matt can you just look up some kiss uh cover band names and let's see which
[43:49]come up with a top three list of his cover band i don't want that search history in my on my
[43:54]computer
[43:54]you guys do that
[43:56]you guys do that
[43:56]you coward your work is gonna be like excuse me are you looking at kiss cover bands you're like
[44:01]yeah and if i have to admit that oh man bad day so there were two musical experiences the second one
[44:09]was as you guys know when i travel i gotta try to find a cool restaurant to check out
[44:13]and des moines could be no different i had to find find a cool restaurant so i was searching
[44:17]for best brunch places in des moines and one spot kept popping up over and over in every search
[44:22]and it was this place called eggs and jam and it turns out
[44:26]this is a 90s hip-hop theme brunch spot no so all of the all of the music is 90s hip-hop the wall is
[44:33]is painted kind of like i don't know what would you say like a run dmc cover or something like
[44:38]kind of like a graffiti art all over the walls and then each of the each of the menu items whether
[44:45]it was a drink or the food had like a cool 90s hip-hop song name so i thought i could share some
[44:50]of those uh dishes with you guys so you can check out the names now if you ask them um how they got
[44:56]some of the vegetables there would they say this is how we grew it yes you should get a job there
[45:05]rob you can oh my god if you maybe wanted a late you wanted a late afternoon uh snack this is how
[45:11]we stew it oh man you eat stew for a snack yeah listen he's a hardy boy but but what sorry kids
[45:21]snack time time to snack he just pulls out this hot pot his crock pot or you know if you're out
[45:26]if you're at the vegan spot and you want to get a beer next door this is how we brew it
[45:31]coming in with the harmony there choose any number of vikings playoffs games and you could say this
[45:36]is how they blew it yes that was to have to do with a restaurant that doesn't make sense here
[45:42]that's just hurtful what you said i'm just trying to get you wound up all right some of the things
[45:47]on the menu that we haven't touched on i'll start with the drinks one of the drinks that i got was
[45:51]called the chronic mango mango pineapple vodka and pineapple cider and it was really
[45:56]good no a mystical margarita if you're a margarita person you get a mystical margarita some other
[46:01]things on the menu that were pretty cool names you can't touch this was egg rolls and chorizo
[46:06]back that taco up they had breakfast tacos named back that taco yes they had they had a whole
[46:12]section of the menu featuring sean puff daddy combs they had five items all about puff daddy
[46:19]they had bad boy diddy puffy sean combs they had all these things about puff daddy oh i thought
[46:25]there was going to be like breakfast food and his p gritties my family has been telling me about eggs
[46:30]and jam for so long and i've never been there i'm so jealous russell's been to eggs and jam and i have
[46:34]not russell is a better iowan than i am the one that's gonna really make you mad aaron i didn't
[46:39]get this but this was the coolest name on the menu the toast face killer oh yes that would have been
[46:47]mine i would have had to order that no question that's what i have to order excuse me can i have
[46:52]some extra cream cash rolls everything around me for my coffee can i get some nutmeg on there
[46:59]so i would highly i'm gonna heat up this wire and stick it up your ass tie you to the bedpost
[47:05]oh is it not that part of the 90s hip hop my bad so i have to recommend if anyone does go through
[47:10]the state of iowa and they decide they need a cool brunch spot you have to check out eggs and jam it
[47:15]was really cool it'd be tough because you'd also want to call it too legit to grit like for your
[47:20]grits so you have a lot of options there with grits that's gonna be tough it was funny though
[47:24]rob you'll laugh at this they actually ran out of potatoes i've never been to a brunch spot before
[47:29]and it was after i ordered and so it didn't impact me anyways but i've watched them go up to like
[47:34]eight people after i was started eating or whatever and they were like the lady would just
[47:39]go we're out of potatoes you have to choose between toast or toast or fruit oh breakfast
[47:45]with no potatoes that's rough that's really rough and i was going to order the potato skins and juice
[47:50]that's pretty good i was like it's so hard of a potato i was gonna say i got potatoes in different
[47:59]area codes g's up potatoes down i got potatoes yes i got i love the potatoes
[48:08]i want to think of a joke so bad it's gonna ruin whatever you guys are doing so i'm gonna skip it
[48:14]uh okay uh going how's it going with you rob well i'll tell you what i was just it was just
[48:19]jenny's birthday and i'm like i'm gonna skip it i'm gonna skip it i'm gonna skip it
[48:20]okay this time she made her own cake okay and but oh god did she no i had my kids buy the
[48:26]not store-bought no so i took her i took her to a spa i got a spa day where we went and stayed at a
[48:34]spa hotel overnight over in new jersey the other thing was is that this forced us to eat three
[48:39]meals in the spa now this was a spa where you could not wear shoes and when you walked around
[48:44]you had to wear your robe and like a swimsuit underneath right so i went to various meals and
[48:50]one of the meals i ordered a spicy pizza yeah because this place is like five floors it's like
[48:57]this is the sauna floor this is the hot tub floor this is the infinity pool this is the
[49:01]you know the massage floor whatever if you're gonna have a spicy pizza and then go sit in a hot
[49:06]tub you are a brave man am i a hero kind of yes okay it wasn't easy but i know i found out the
[49:13]hard way that one of the worst parts of a spa with food in it is that when you're eating
[49:20]pizza and you spill pizza sauce on your white robe there's absolutely nothing you can do about
[49:26]that and you stick out for the rest of the time as you're walking around as a guy with pizza sauce
[49:30]on his robe eating in a restaurant where you have a robe on and no shoes and everyone else is doing
[49:36]the same is so bizarre it's like being in your house but there's just tons of other people there
[49:40]it's it's it's it's crazy hey if this if this band we're covering were featured at that 90s
[49:45]restaurant and the food wasn't very good the the dish would be called the bland oh
[49:50]and when they clean up your table they bring over that rag mama rag or if it took too long
[50:01]they'd call it the weight not on this album unfortunately uh the other thing is being at a
[50:08]spa by the way and you're walking around after being you just go sit in various hot tubs right
[50:12]and saunas you just hop you just hop from one to the other and like yep exactly and then i'd go
[50:18]they had a cold plunge so i'd have a sauna and then they had a seven foot deep pool that was
[50:22]like 60 degrees that you'd jump into it was awesome did you sit in any hot tubs with other
[50:26]people or just with your oh yeah tons oh yeah no tons of other people it was just like everything
[50:31]else around the new york city area i don't know always sitting in a hot tub with strangers sounds
[50:35]weird to me i'm out and i'll tell you what men's bathroom empty i would well i never went into it
[50:42]but i'm pretty sure it was empty i never saw anybody else i'm guessing it was empty like i
[50:47]was with is like i'm gonna go to the bathroom and i'm like oh my god i'm gonna go to the bathroom
[50:48]and i was like oh god that didn't even occur to me to ask where the bathrooms are
[50:52]yeah but i just i'm just going down i'm just picturing all these people eating all this pizza
[50:58]and fried food and then everybody kind of spilling all of themselves oh yeah you're just gonna go sit
[51:02]in a hot tub and just yeah what could possibly go wrong it's like pizza the hud and space balls
[51:07]and then for two days i did this two days it's a lot of spa time and i'm walking around in a wet
[51:13]swimsuit i came home my taint area was so wet i was like oh my god i'm gonna go to the bathroom
[51:18]it looks like cotton candy that has water on part of it you know when you take a bite of cotton
[51:21]candy and it's like the pink pink in the middle then like light pink that's my taint it looks
[51:25]just like that it's torn up from the floor up how are you why are you looking at your taint
[51:29]oh okay oh i just won't oh you're gonna body shame me now you get like the mirror down there
[51:36]like you're doing like the taint monologues like that's what i wanted to know looking at my taint
[51:40]oh no i just love to have a burning cracking sensation and not know what's going on in my
[51:43]taint area i could be good i could be folding inside out i could be folding it should be bad
[51:48]okay aaron enough of that talk disgusting let's talk about this album it's nobody's
[51:53]favorite part of the show fortunately we're not talking about music from big pink after
[51:58]all that taint talk yeah this is the brown album
[52:03]it's time for nobody's favorite part of the show oh my god i'm almost passed out
[52:10]if that restaurant featured steaks you would order the big pink wouldn't you air all day yes
[52:18]so we are talking about the band this is the band and the album is the band but we're going to call
[52:23]it's called the brown album kind of colloquially um this is their second album after music from
[52:28]the big pink this is a mostly canadian band that kind of got famous as bob dylan's first backup
[52:32]band when he went electric they're also featured in the movie the last waltz where it talks about
[52:37]their last concert with the levon helms and basically uh music from the big pink was kind
[52:43]of like a response to psychedelic experimental rock by really just playing with music from the big pink
[52:48]it's kind of melding rock and roll and kind of folksy country type sound and they they said it's
[52:56]like it's like going to hear a country band but the rhythm section is playing for stacks or motown
[53:01]that's how a lot of people described it i don't know if i quite heard that listen to this album
[53:04]but people what i learned about researching for this album people fucking loved the band like
[53:09]more than i realized they love these guys it's crazy right i don't get why they're singing about
[53:14]southern united states so much when most of these guys were canadian it doesn't make sense to me
[53:18]sell albums sell albums because they but they go ahead i was just gonna say i mean you know
[53:23]i ultimately think of them and we can get to this later i don't want to hijack your thing here but i
[53:28]mean they're like a southern rock group and that was their inspiration for a lot of what they were
[53:32]going for and so yeah you know if you're gonna they didn't want to be known as canadians they
[53:37]didn't want people they wanted people to think of them as a southern rock group so they started
[53:41]singing about those places so that they kind of were faking it to make it if you will but
[53:46]that's like a
[53:48]being in a kiss cover band it's so strange i mean it's almost exactly the same idea i mean
[53:52]drive by truckers who are a southern rock band who i love sang about this band they were embraced by
[53:57]that that culture this this is the second band to be put on the cover of time magazine after the
[54:03]beatles this is the other band that made the cover i have no idea i mean it's crazy i could not pick
[54:08]a single one of these guys out of the lineup across the great divide while coming home to
[54:13]an upset wife it is i don't know what any of these songs are about i listen to this album
[54:18]so many times this week i couldn't tell you what any of these songs are about man what do you think
[54:22]of this as an opener i mean i think it it sets up what the what they are i mean they're kind of a
[54:28]little funky they're kind of a little rocky kind of a little you just can't peg them you know and
[54:32]i think that's why i like them they've got piano they've got a couple of singers they've got some
[54:37]good singers you know so i don't know i think as a starter you you know what this band is right
[54:42]away what this group is what this album is so aaron almost every one of these songs is telling
[54:47]a story about somebody living in like the 1800s oh okay before they had text message or actually
[54:53]that was when text messaging started see if there's no text messages i'm not interested
[54:56]like can you imagine a pony express comes to aaron's little covered wagon he's like holy
[55:01]shit i'd go nuts i would i would kiss that guy right in the mouth thank you for your message
[55:05]all right tuba guys let's fire up the tuba rag mama rag oh yeah whatever rob here's that
[55:13]tuba he starts thinking i'm jetty cheating in the tuba player playing in the background
[55:17]this song bangs this is my favorite song on the album i loved it when we covered it on the list
[55:24]before i loved when i heard it months ago when we started the quest i i can't get enough of this
[55:28]song this felt like aaron copeland like they're just doing like americana just taking it from
[55:33]the whole the whole gamut of american music i read i read that rag mama rag they all kind of
[55:38]played different instruments than what they normally played so levon helm i think uh played
[55:42]the mandolin a guy played a fiddle they all switched up instruments and played different
[55:46]things it made me start wondering what they were doing and i think that's what i'm going to do next
[55:46]it made me start wondering what if we switched it up one night and we all played different roles
[55:50]what if matt was the main host what if aaron was i'll play the i'll play the vegan loving
[55:55]wow you'd play me i'll play the dumb i'll play the dumb shit that none of us like and then we
[56:05]text behind his back all the time which one of us is that oh man we don't need to talk about which
[56:09]one of you that is i've got three separate text chains going where we just rag on that third
[56:16]all over him huh and this probably the most famous song on the album the night they drove old dixie
[56:22]down this is levon helms on the uh vocals which there is a good uh documentary out about his life
[56:33]he looks completely different than he did he lived a hard life
[56:38]by the way i keep saying leave on helms like ed helms is he the one that the elton john song is
[56:45]about this is possibly a good question okay it is i looked that up today and i listened to leave on
[56:51]one of my favorite elton john songs of all time it's written about him but then what's the song
[56:56]came out like four years ago it's called it's called leave on yeah it's called pinball wizard
[57:01]by the way originally i thought pinball wizard was an elton john song for so long because i had
[57:06]his greatest hits elton john's in tommy i think right i'm pretty sure he's in the movie so honest
[57:14]sake rob yeah rob's right um so here's the deal is that the night they drove old dixie down after
[57:20]that final concert that was in the last waltz leave on helm never played that song again and
[57:24]it wasn't because of a songwriting problem a lot of people think it's because he hated the person
[57:30]whose version got up to the highest on the charts and that's joan baez got all the way up to number
[57:36]three with her version of the night they drove old dixie down pretty good
[57:43]and for some reason he was so mad about this that he never wanted to play it again honestly okay i'm
[57:50]gonna i know we don't rip on stuff but this sounds like a bad church choir singing the song compared
[57:55]to the band's version of it in my opinion oh yeah it's very it's very corny it's pretty square yeah
[58:01]but i could imagine like if somebody else can you imagine if somebody else came out with the
[58:06]same podcast we're doing right same like bits same like little segments and then they just got way more
[58:13]popular like they become one of the most popular podcasts in the united states you would be like
[58:16]what the fuck they'd be so bad in your face seth meyer's brother in your face
[58:22]i'm still not sure if that's actually his brother uh when you awake
[58:28]i used to think it was so funny to wake up my dad by just peeling back an eyelid
[58:40]i thought it was so funny because you'd see
[58:42]that eye like roll from up to look at you god i think if my kids did that to me right now i i
[58:48]might be in jail for like punching them they've done that to me and it's one of the most miserable
[58:54]ways to wake up of somebody jamming their finger into your eye and then forcing you to look at them
[58:58]and like it's just terrible came out in 1969 how much of this is where does randy newman's career
[59:04]fit into this because so much of this sounds like randy newman to me i don't know who came first
[59:08]anybody know can you imagine if
[59:12]austin power saw randy newman randy newman baby yeah you are randy
[59:17]you're talking about short people randy yeah you're randy newman
[59:23]what do i make you a horny randy newman that's the worst austin powers voice i've ever heard
[59:33]yeah baby yeah what did austin powers get german i don't understand
[59:40]what's going on
[59:42]do i make you horny randy newman well it looks like randy newman was like 17 in 1968 when he
[59:52]made his first album so this was this stuff was probably before like he was probably listening
[59:57]74 yeah yeah he was so randy yeah but it just sounds to me like one influenced the other and
[60:03]i didn't know what the chronology was thank you matt for your taking my comments seriously
[60:07]what excuse me that feels like another shot at me
[60:12]this is why one of you is the dumb shithead that nobody likes rob no of course never and i don't
[60:18]get it because all i did today i was so nice to aaron all he did is i wrote one song where i
[60:22]called him a fucking moron about five times okay and then he has the audacity to say that something
[60:29]i said wasn't on topic outrageous all right speaking of great songs up on cripple creek
[60:36]i love this group got up to top 25 on the hot 100 you like this one aaron yeah
[60:42]it's a great groove this is the one that reminds me of rufus this is the one that's like to me r&b
[60:46]kind of chunky the bass is doing its thing the keys are doing their thing they just lay it down
[60:52]and it sounds great i want you to listen to the organ back there now i thought of russell every
[60:57]time now i hear an electric piano or something i think of russell automatically i've been i've
[61:00]been pavlovian trained this is a clavinet with a wah-wah pedal it's the first example of it
[61:05]and some people think that this is the inspiration for stevie wonder's famous superstition opener
[61:12]where he's playing the exact same thing i can hear it so the band gets credit for stevie wonder guys
[61:18]this is the most influential band of all time i'm having a i'm having a cocktail on side a with this
[61:24]one it's called a crippled creek cocktail it's weirdly satisfying smoky savory cocktail here's
[61:30]what's in it guys if it doesn't have ripple in it i'll be so mad three and a third slices of
[61:34]cucumbers one reserve for garnish bourbon lemon juice pomegranate molasses oh i don't know and
[61:42]dejon mustard it's a drunkard's dream if i ever did see one
[61:46]why three and a third slices why not three why not four why three and a third
[61:53]maybe i don't know i don't know i i don't know it's kind of like a sweet pickle kind of a
[61:59]corn bourbon kind of it looks nice let's see let's count the cucumbers man county cucumbers
[62:04]did you say there's a hyssop in there what was the one right before the mustard pomegranate
[62:08]molasses and cane syrup i did not have cane syrup i was gonna say
[62:12]not have pomegranate molasses but i did go to the store and i got regular molasses and
[62:17]pomegranate juice and i figured that would get the same thing accomplished
[62:21]why wouldn't it work molasses in the fridge right now i could have sent you some russell
[62:26]i think this is rob's new favorite bit of the whole podcast is listening to russell's
[62:30]awesome drinks and then how he has to modify it based on what he's
[62:35]rush i don't blame you i do the exact same thing just as snobby new yorkers who've got all those
[62:42]i just think it's so because it sounds like russell's a college kid who's like okay
[62:45]gonna make a margarita all i've got is vodka and lemonade okay that's gonna work i could break i
[62:51]could make that work put ice in it it makes it taste so much better though that's my trick you
[62:54]put ice in it i gotta say the idea that russell did not have pomegranate syrup was the least
[63:00]surprising thing i heard all night until aaron said that he did have some and then i was like
[63:03]that is the least surprising thing pomegranate molasses i bought it for a recipe i can't remember
[63:10]which one but it was pretty good
[63:12]was it the up on ripple creek drink that russ is no it wasn't like a salad with real pomegranates
[63:17]in it maybe some tahini i can't remember now i gotta i'll find the recipe and send it to you
[63:20]matt you're right though i do it's one of my favorite parts of the whole time you know you
[63:24]know what got confusing for me though so i've never had a pomegranate before i don't even know
[63:30]what the inside looks like or tastes like oh that's exciting so what became confusing is
[63:34]i only needed a little bit of pomegranate juice could i have cut up a pomegranate and
[63:38]squeezed it into the cocktail or not
[63:42]oh my god pomegranates are one of the most difficult okay russell i'm gonna show you
[63:46]what my taint looks like right now after two days of the soup suit that's a lot what the
[63:50]inside of a pomegranate looks like actually
[63:52]to tiny little balls everywhere
[63:56]so then i went to the juice i'm not sure and something i tried to ride a bike tonight it
[64:03]was agony it felt like somebody was biting me so then i go to the juice aisle and i'm like well
[64:08]i'll find pomegranate juice but they only had they had pomegranate juice like the expensive like
[64:15]ten dollars for a bottle type of thing or they had the plastic bottle for two bucks
[64:20]but it was pomegranate cranberry and i decided to go with the cheaper of the two options
[64:25]i'm not spending 10 bucks for an ounce of pomegranate juice i just with this podcast right
[64:33]russ's knockoff bar where russ spends one day at the grocery store and then you get whatever
[64:39]drinks he can create from that yes sir we order you get it we can make a book out of this russell
[64:44]yeah i was also curious why the fuck does dijon mustard need to go into this and i was gonna use
[64:49]the honey mustard i had at home but i thought i was already at the store i can get dijon mustard
[64:54]and i did get gray poupon oh yeah of course classy then you can show that to the hairdresser
[64:59]russell be like well okay if you see i do have dijon mustard and she's like oh my god i'm gonna
[65:03]why is that a big deal it's like because you're actually on a date with me okay so
[65:06]and at the end of the date i kiss so it's like like i kiss at the end of the first day
[65:12]excuse me sir how'd you like your haircut do i have to tell something here is there something
[65:17]here on my chin and then when she gets close you go do i have to tell her we're on a date or do i
[65:21]could i just make the move at the end of the haircut i think that i think you're according
[65:25]to your aunt you can just make that move at the end yeah i think that's questionable advice which
[65:28]for some reason for me brought out dijon mustard i don't know where that fit in i'm totally lost
[65:32]all right just like when
[65:33]your gal gadot didn't like what was going on on the oh boy i wish i would have done this the set
[65:40]of wonder woman and she had to tell him very quietly whispering pines was chris very bad job
[65:46]the piano wait i know was he was he acting untoward on the set of wonder woman
[65:50]no no it's a whispering tune he when when he wrote this song the piano had one key out of
[65:59]tune so he made them tune the piano like this which is why you hear this little weird noise
[66:03]strange song i wanted this one to be over first song where i was like yeah that song has got to go
[66:09]the first song i had to skip multiple times i had a hard time with this well this is the end of this
[66:14]is the end of side one side one is uh a great i think it's a great side i think you could listen
[66:19]to that side for a long time and be happy i mean you're going from the night they roll dixie down
[66:24]rag mama rag crippled creek great songs second half of this album just like my second half of
[66:31]the spa guys it kind of gets a little uncomfortable
[66:33]okay for your taint are you going to play some songs yes for both of these the album and the spa
[66:41]jemima surrender i mean this one grooves though i like that it's definitely for me anything that's
[66:49]a little bit up tempo in this album i'm with the slower ones i had a really i struggled
[66:54]i like the idea though that they put the pianist of the band okay no aaron pianist means who plays
[67:02]piano i saw you could you just like a big nod on the on the drums uh so there you go but it is
[67:09]interesting like in the band they just seem to like it seemed to be like me when i was in band
[67:12]class with a sub you're like oh what the hell am i gonna go play today we we also have to talk about
[67:17]the name what do you guys think of the name of just calling yourself the band
[67:20]yeah how'd that happen gangster would we have more listeners if we just called ourselves the podcast
[67:25]we couldn't have less oh my god the podcast that's such a good idea
[67:30]what's the name of the band i don't know i don't know the name of the band i don't know the name of the
[67:32]name of your podcast the podcast or it could be called apple podcast see what so people search
[67:37]apple podcast and they would because you know how hard it was doing research like for the band
[67:42]because everything you type in you'd be like the band rolling stone and it was just rolling stone
[67:46]stuff and i'm like shit that's not what i want i want the band by the band in the magazine
[67:51]rolling stone stupid google didn't even get it rocking chair sounds like a rocking chair
[68:02]i am not a big fan of rocking chairs that's my hot take today just because you think there it's not
[68:10]going to hold up or what no i think rocking chairs actually are a big guy's best friend because
[68:14]they're normally big chairs right they have not just the feet so you're never going to see a
[68:19]rocking chair break it just it's the pushing up i don't it's the moving and i'm sitting in the
[68:26]chair because i don't want to exercise i don't want to exercise that's why i'm sitting in the
[68:29]fucking chair yeah and then i'm always worried it's going to be like i don't want to exercise
[68:32]going to like go on somebody's toes or something like that it's aaron you fuck with rocking chairs
[68:36]do you have a rocking chair in your house aaron no i got one behind me right here shit in my
[68:40]garage but uh we yeah we got one for the porch when my son was young um but he's obviously too
[68:46]big to rock it with us now so now it just sits behind me in the garage it's a nice one though
[68:50]it's like an outdoor style rocking chair it's good all of aaron's life is slowly getting put
[68:54]in this garage he doesn't realize he's like wait a minute california does 50 50 divorces what does
[69:01]that mean it's like literally you could
[69:02]rosie's wife at gmail.com is just she's playing the long game here
[69:07]sending his stuff out to the garage here we have a boogie woogie look out cleveland
[69:12]these song titles were all over the board i had no idea what was going on with these titles we
[69:22]got rocking chair look out cleveland jawbone what i don't even know what these songs are about
[69:26]i don't know what any of them are about either well again i think a lot of these are just
[69:31]they're they're looking at you and they're looking at you and they're looking at you and
[69:32]they're looking to sell albums and so like you put cleveland in the title of an album
[69:35]and all of a sudden everybody in cleveland wants to listen to it right i mean so 100 copies sold
[69:39]in cleveland it's better than what that song was originally called i'm done being a mountie for the
[69:44]day let's go get some poutine this is not southern enough okay yeah sorry sorry sorry next up we have
[70:00]jawbone now jawbone is kind of an interesting song because it is in six four time what does that mean
[70:06]means when you're counting it off count by sixes
[70:10]oh yeah no it's kind of has an uneven sort of feel i didn't notice that right so i can't do this so
[70:19]well you know what i'll tell you what you guys are in luck because oh boy okay somebody really
[70:25]cool maybe we did switch jobs tonight because i made a little oh yeah
[70:30]he cranked it out what is the list about this is the list of animals that feel like they're in my
[70:37]teeth right now number one we've got the electric eel number two we have that caterpillar with the
[70:45]spikes that you pick up and the spice gets stuck in your skin and it's just so bad
[70:48]no he did the list once on the scary halloween songs that none of them were scary
[70:52]okay so first of all you don't have to say that right before i start my list that's a big downer
[71:00]i'd forgotten that because i was so excited i was like oh this is my first list and then i realized
[71:04]it's my first list that's not going to get edited out you block out terrible experiences and if you
[71:08]tell yourself over and over it didn't happen eventually it didn't happen i can take up a i
[71:12]can put up with a lot of shit but a whole segment i come up with just getting cut from the this
[71:16]podcast it's like you know what we talked about teens for a long time so we're gonna have to cut
[71:21]out your stuff that you work really hard on damn it so six four time you still have four four four
[71:27]so it's like one two three four god i'm doing
[71:30]a terrible job like one two three four one two three four but now it's six beats long at that
[71:36]same rate so here's the most easy one okay yeah most easy that's what a lot of scientists say
[71:41]this is mgmt electric feel just listen to when you're going to count this i'll count to six for
[71:47]you
[71:47]here it comes listen to the bass one two three four
[72:00]five six one two three four five six one two three four five six so it's it sounds like it's
[72:10]just dragging a little bit when you're actually adding two more beats yeah that's that's clever
[72:14]okay it's like aaron when he's had a couple drinks needs a couple more beats uh now sound
[72:20]garden fell on black days also in six four time listen you can hear it counted off here
[72:30]one two three couldn't i just say one two three four and each time i get it i'd start over again
[72:37]at four try it one well here how about this
[72:42]see you get off and yeah there's a lot all these songs have a lot of syncopation kind of involved
[72:51]too so if you just try to count six beats straight it doesn't really work but if you feel the
[72:56]syncopation but you want to talk about synchronicity how about synchronicity and synchronicity and
[73:00]synchronicity synchronicity you're talking syncopation never mind who is this band
[73:04]or something listen to the piano
[73:09]two three four five six seven eight one two three eight four times no it's six
[73:16]that's a jam yeah also it's six four time wait so who's the band i was talking over you i'm sorry
[73:26]who is that police oh
[73:30]oh
[73:30]okay and you might remember them because of sting
[73:34]the wrestler the wrestler yeah he was when he was a surfer sting or the crow
[73:39]you know it's the sting the sting yeah when he came in he started with the band the police a
[73:44]lot of people don't realize that i always thought it was bullshit when i was younger
[73:47]that there was a singer called sting because i thought he was ripping off the wrestler
[73:50]and then it turned out there was also a guy in u2 that was ripping off the wrestler the edge
[73:58]the edge right
[73:59]son of a bitch
[74:00]see the wrestler is just oh that's why my favorite band was just brutus the barber beefcake what was
[74:08]sting's deal was he just not that talented or was he injured a lot like when he disappeared
[74:12]injured all the time okay who are we talking about so then he had to do all that stuff where
[74:19]he would just come to the stage and then it was like a big threat and he would leave and never
[74:23]wrestle and then it was like well are we ever going to wrestle here and then yeah right just
[74:27]i also liked how his weapon was a baseball bat like he's just gonna wallop people with baseball
[74:32]bats like at least the guitar has got a little give a baseball bat that can do some damage and
[74:37]the fact that they stole that right from casey jones on teenage mutant ninja turtles oh yeah
[74:41]just a complete ripoff i don't know oh well if he would have had a goalie stick that would have been
[74:47]i was just watching i watched that movie the other week by the way i watched that movie last
[74:50]week literally teenage mutant ninja turtles from like 93 at the end shredder goes into a fucking
[74:55]garbage truck and they crush him up into little bits it's one of the most horrifying things you
[74:59]ever see whoa like the idea of it is terrifying you get crushed in a garbage truck like not a good
[75:05]having kids steal stuff he wasn't even that bad of a guy and he gets crushed in a garbage truck
[75:09]makes no sense listen to this guitar russell six four time whip it to a devo right here
[75:17]two three four five six two three four five six the rest of the song is in four four but
[75:25]that guy's got a good one
[75:25]on this list they've got to be they 100 have got to be and finally here's a little gift and by the
[75:32]way making a list it turns out is actually very hard like it takes a lot of time and then you're
[75:36]looking up stuff and writing in beck six four time does not help i can tell you right now
[75:41]uh this is a little band called pearl jam with the fixer
[75:46]three
[75:50]i hear it
[75:55]it just makes you think that this the verse is just going a little long that's how it always
[75:59]feels to me so anyway that guys was easily a top three list easily top three top three in the last
[76:06]three weeks i had a lot more comments i wanted to give on that list but i was getting shouted down
[76:11]so i had to just chill tell rob to go fuck off sometimes sometimes you just need to keep going
[76:17]rosie don't listen to him i don't want to get mad at you and again what have i done to you today
[76:20]nothing um but i did edit out that part where i yelled at you
[76:25]okay so the audience has no idea what you're talking about okay and they don't get why it
[76:29]feels weird now on the podcast after i yelled at you for real you can call him a fucking son
[76:34]of a bitch mother and russell said to me you're gonna have to apologize again okay i edited all
[76:39]that out because it would make people feel awkward if they knew what an actual jerk i was here they
[76:43]think i'm fun and they think aaron and i are friends they don't realize that we're actually
[76:48]gonna have to have a conversation after this we're gonna have to have another post pod conversation
[76:54]come to jesus
[76:55]okay fine here's something guess what here's another edit point aaron i'm really sorry
[76:58]okay i should have done that there we go see now i'm back all good
[77:02]nobody can know i missed aaron the unfaithful servant
[77:08]another one i had to skip this was either a handful of songs where i got
[77:17]i didn't mind a lot of the songs but there's some where i'd get a minute in i'm like i can't do
[77:21]another three minutes of this man when they slow it down they just really
[77:25]grind it to a halt just the tempo to me
[77:28]plus they're like uh what's the south like a uh all right king harvest
[77:38]i think i stole i think this is a good closer i like this as a closer matt what do you think
[77:43]of this for the clothes it's okay okay yeah this reminds me so much of that labby siffer song that
[77:54]was sampled for hi my name is the m&m tune obviously i was worried i was a great point
[78:01]aaron i was worried i wasn't gonna like this pomegranate drink so i made a second drink on
[78:05]this album too all right oh my god so on the second half i'm doing in honor of king harvest
[78:10]i'm doing a harvest apple mule which is apple cider ginger beer vodka and a cinnamon stick
[78:17]oh that sounds good actually and for the fall russell i would fuck with that that sounds really
[78:23]good yeah i don't even want to hear it
[78:24]what i had to replace for the apple garnish chasing the pastor's daughter yeah it sounds
[78:28]great this this pomegranate slice did not do what i was hoping it would do
[78:32]look up what a pomegranate is russell what you actually eat a pomegranate slice on a drink is
[78:38]one of the funniest ideas ever it's like the idea of yeah it is it's the size of a popcorn
[78:43]that's what we're talking about
[78:46]the toothpick would be bigger than the pomegranate it's so wild
[78:54]uh i now i'm sure you have an abundance of cinnamon sticks at your house russell there's
[79:00]no way you had to sub out a cinnamon stick no no the cinnamon sticks there the apple is was
[79:05]my joke i do have the cinnamon stick you can see it you actually had this wow nice work russell i'm
[79:11]impressed subbing out the apple although i think it is the only time in my life where i've ever
[79:16]purchased anything from the spices aisle of the grocery store that that aaron is getting more mad
[79:23]at that than when i told him to fuck off
[79:24]like for real i guarantee that upset aaron it is difficult to buy spices man because they all come
[79:30]in like the containers are way too big all spice all spice jars should be about 25 percent the size
[79:37]that they're you can't use that much spice before it goes bad it's tough i imagine aaron's outside
[79:43]with a sign smaller spice jars small and he's walking around in front of the grocery store
[79:47]smaller spice jars yeah that's my axe to grind right there that's that's my that's my platform
[79:53]write me in for the
[79:54]governor's recall no don't don't write in vote no on the recall and don't write anybody in
[79:59]too late aaron i wrote in aaron shit and i don't think i spelled your name right that's my bad
[80:05]that's not you know what that's on me i'm gonna take the blame for that all right let's get into
[80:09]nobody's favorite part yeah but it is the patented actually never mind it's the patented and very
[80:14]popular rating system how do we know that i think we talked about the album for about five minutes
[80:24]that counts right is this the rest of the podcast is it time for the rig listen i got it is this album
[80:32]at 57 is it rolling well toned that means it is perfect okay it's perfect right here oh my god this
[80:38]is you know what this hit me right in the perfect spot right on this list it's influential but it's
[80:44]not so great you know it's not top 10 album but this is good is that would be a rolling well toned
[80:49]rolling stone you did a great job with the band and again when i talk about the band i'm not
[80:52]talking about the rolling stones don't be confused with that did rolling stone rate the band not
[80:58]rolling stones too high okay that would mean that it is a rolling groan you did not like listening
[81:04]to this album when they picked the band and i'm talking about rolling stone the magazine they did
[81:08]a bad job they put it too high which means it's lower on this list which means we got to it too
[81:14]soon we should be getting to it later okay this brown album should be coming at a different time
[81:18]or is this a rolling boned okay it
[81:22]it shouldn't be this far back we should have had this already this is one of the greatest albums of
[81:26]all time according to uh rolling stone the magazine not the band the band conspicuously
[81:31]silent about the band not themselves the rolling stone band but the band the band
[81:35]uh so that's very simple uh russell what did you think is this a rolling well toned rolling boned
[81:40]or rolling groan so i i liked a lot of the songs like we were talking about earlier i thought side
[81:45]a had a bunch of jams on them i loved the first side but there are too many songs that the slower
[81:49]ones like aaron was saying just didn't do it for me the other reason why i think it's a rolling bone
[81:52]reason i didn't love this album sometimes i get annoyed with these albums that are ranked super
[81:56]high when they don't have the most famous song by the by whatever the band is and the weight is not
[82:02]on this band actually this is the band this is the band yeah this is the band you said it doesn't
[82:06]matter what the band is the band is this so this is the band i guess regardless their best song is
[82:12]the weight if you are you thinking of the guess who what right because you said i guess no he's
[82:17]thinking yes yeah oh yes yes guess who yes
[82:21]who no the band
[82:24]god it's a fucking buddy go ahead russell this album like that bit is rolling
[82:32]okay so we're all saying hurtful things today i'm going to keep that in mind
[82:38]i combine my super huge salt container that i have and he's like
[82:51]salt in the wound it's a mineral well-toned rolling boned or rolling grown what did you
[82:56]think of the band by the band i'm afraid to speak up here but i will say uh way back in the rolling
[83:02]going section of this podcast matt talked about professional bands that play together that really
[83:06]know how to play and you can hear that with these guys um i don't know where this sits in their
[83:12]chronology as a band playing together but you can hear that they 100 percent know one another i did
[83:17]not know this stuff about them switching instruments but uh they're clearly not going to
[83:21]clearly good musicians very versatile when they get a groove going i love it some of the
[83:25]mid tempo to faster tempo tunes on here i i really like um but i i do have to disagree with matt i
[83:32]think when they slow the tempo down that's where you can hear that to me the voices just have to
[83:36]be better if you want to play that slow you've got to have a top five or ten voice in the band
[83:41]and for me they don't so i enjoy the album um but the slow tunes just weigh it down too much
[83:46]for me so i'm gonna have to plus looking ahead a little bit on the list knowing that zeppelin
[83:50]four is coming up next i have to say this is rolling ground okay so again you're stepping
[83:55]on my bit there at the end talking about the next band so i didn't know that i was stepping on your
[84:00]bit no actually we're in a big fight okay don't try to get out of it if i could if i could text
[84:05]message you a hug right now rob i would there is a hug emoji you're gonna get a bunch of hug emojis
[84:11]you're gonna wake up tomorrow i just got a message from i just got a text message from russell and
[84:15]it's slowly opening on my phone okay i see a hotel size shampoo bottle uh no shit i should say that
[84:20]for after the song i fucked up matt uh what do you think rolling well toned rolling boned or rolling
[84:24]grown and keep in mind guys i did not interrupt aaron there because i'm actually nice i really
[84:29]really like this band and i think it goes uh which which band uh the band this is so funny
[84:36]when you're it's on the other side is it is it man you know but they've been around this is like
[84:42]20 years into their um their life as a band they've started out doing rockabilly and then kind of got
[84:50]off of that tried to figure out where they're at to kind of get to southern rock went to went to bob
[84:54]dylan did a couple years with him i mean cripes they're just they're at the peak of their performing
[85:01]career and how they can act as a live band we talked about this patty smith there's bands that
[85:06]have albums because they're great live and then there's bands who are great you know have to play
[85:12]live because they have great albums right you know and so there's kind of that play here i think this
[85:16]would be an unbelievable band to see live because all they ever did was play honky tonks and
[85:20]bars and backed up these great musicians and so i think the only reason this album is here
[85:26]right now by the band the band by the band is because of who they are uh from an influential
[85:33]standpoint in the music in the music world and so this album i think absolutely rolling groaned
[85:38]this this should not be this high up here but as an influential band this is like one of those
[85:44]homages to them as for their influence that they're putting it where it is so no i don't think that this
[85:50]album should be in the top 100 but as a as a band and their influence the band is very influential
[85:58]i like it yeah so that's my i think but i do think the band by the band is rolling well groaned
[86:05]i hope you screwed up you gotta start over i mean everything uh good i i will tell you right now you
[86:12]guys are all incorrect it's too bad this is a row okay i gotta read this first doesn't quite work
[86:18]this is a rolling southern america
[86:20]american canadian again it makes no sense okay they're telling me about the night they drove old
[86:25]dixie down they should be talking about the night that the montreal canadians almost won the stanley
[86:30]cup and maple syrup and maple syrup is that like pomegranate syrup it's very
[86:36]i spent all this money on pomegranate i think they're quite different because i think maple
[86:42]syrup comes right from the tree and then pomegranate molasses is you can make it by
[86:46]cooking down the fruit until it gets you gotta boil you gotta boil that shit to get it how
[86:49]long is molasses good for aaron i mean i think a long time there's a lot of sugar in there i think
[86:55]you keep it for a long time oh that's so good that would be a perfect thing at your restaurant
[87:01]your 90s restaurant order some brown sugar d'angelo comes out with no shirt on molasses
[87:06]all over him it was 80s when you could pour some sugar on me next up we have an album and the
[87:12]the legend goes when this band was naming this album they were on a golf course they were just
[87:18]about to hit the ball and they said hey guys what are we going to do next we're going to do this
[87:19]we're going to call this album led zeppelin and they go
[87:22]four
[87:25]that was great actually how many people are in this band
[87:44]jack beck did it better i just spent the
[87:49]last five minutes going through the rolling stone top 100 hip-hop songs of all time trying to come
[87:53]up with a good breakfast pun joke and motherfucker this rolling stone website is terrible for this
[87:59]list too you can't even get through the goddamn five minutes of your life you're not getting back
[88:05]just got coming back closest i could get was to the top salt and peppa push it real good
[88:12]red man
[88:19]something there i got it i got it red man red man shit red man that's good
