[00:00]In 2020, four friends decided to listen to every one of the greatest 500 albums that's decided by Rolling Stone magazine.

[00:06]This resulted in a text chain that celebrated the music, excoriated the order, and led us to making this podcast.

[00:12]We are far from experts, and we promise to do almost no research.

[00:15]All opinions are our own, unless you disagree.

[00:18]Please sit back and enjoy Beck Did It Better.

[00:21]This is Purple Rain by Prince.

[00:24]Guys, I'm thinking, here's what I'm thinking.

[00:26]In honor of Prince, I've decided this podcast needs is a cool overhaul.

[00:30]Listening to all this Prince has made me realize we are not cool enough, okay?

[00:34]And I know that might come as a shock to a lot of people.

[00:35]But I'm thinking about changing the name of the podcast.

[00:37]How about this?

[00:39]Rob and the Revolution.

[00:40]That sounds all right, but I think if we wanted to go next level, maybe we do like Prince did and change it to a symbol.

[00:48]And actually, I'm glad you brought this up, Rob, because I had a few symbols in mind I wanted to draw up and share with you.

[00:53]Oh, great.

[00:53]Why don't you share your screen real quick here on the Zoom?

[00:55]Yeah, let me just go ahead and share the screen.

[00:57]All right.

[00:57]First one.

[00:58]All right.

[00:58]So, yep.

[00:59]So, I'm looking at these and it's just, let's see, it's about a dozen or so pictures of his wife's feet.

[01:04]Okay.

[01:05]That sounds good.

[01:05]When you want to hear about the greatest albums of all time.

[01:12]But you're just too lazy to look it up online.

[01:17]If you want to hear four guys who chat and then they get off track.

[01:22]I've got the perfect podcast for you.

[01:26]For you, Jack.

[01:27]Beck did it better.

[01:30]Welcome, everybody, to Beck did it better.

[01:33]And this is our horniest album yet.

[01:35]And I am totally here for it.

[01:36]Guys, think, if you will, a picture of you and I engaged in a kiss.

[01:41]That's it.

[01:43]I just wanted you to think about that.

[01:44]I don't know.

[01:44]It doesn't really have anything to do with the album.

[01:46]I just thought it was an interesting thing to start with.

[01:47]Now that you're all excited and ramped up, let me introduce you to my sexy co-host.

[01:51]We've got sexy Russell in Minnesota.

[01:53]Sexy Russell, how are you doing?

[01:55]Rob.

[01:56]I'm not your co-host.

[01:58]I'm not your friend.

[01:59]I'm something our listeners will never comprehend.

[02:01]That's not.

[02:03]Wow.

[02:04]Yes.

[02:04]In Minneapolis, I'm all thrown off.

[02:09]I don't know where to go for that.

[02:10]In Minneapolis, we've got sexy Matt.

[02:13]Matt, how are you doing?

[02:14]Doing great, Rob.

[02:15]Thanks for having me.

[02:16]Aaron, how are you doing?

[02:17]Aaron's not sexy enough to be called out on this podcast.

[02:23]Aaron out in California.

[02:24]How are you doing, Aaron?

[02:24]Yeah, it doesn't feel good, does it?

[02:26]This is how I felt in high school, Aaron.

[02:27]The Aaron-Rob relationship is starting off great today, by the way.

[02:32]I'm really good.

[02:34]I'm very excited to talk about this album.

[02:35]I'm excited about the next three albums in this run.

[02:38]Eight, nine, and ten are going to be really exciting.

[02:39]I'm good.

[02:40]Sexy album after sexy album.

[02:42]Let's talk about rolling going.

[02:45]How's it going, everybody?

[02:46]It's, it's, it's, it's time to see what everybody's up to.

[02:53]It's time for Rollin'.

[02:56]Going.

[02:56]Oh!

[02:58]All right, Russell.

[03:00]Rolling going.

[03:01]How's it going?

[03:02]Rolling going.

[03:03]As you guys know, I, I've been to a record store once.

[03:06]I kind of had a panic and I decided a few days ago that I was going to actually try it again and take your advice.

[03:12]You know, Matt gave me the advice of, if I don't know what to get, just ask for the Pearl Jam and if they don't have it, I can leave.

[03:18]Aaron, you said something along the lines of, you'll, Aaron, you'll find, you just kind of said, you know, find something and just do the pity buy.

[03:25]You got to buy something.

[03:26]You got to walk out of there with something.

[03:27]So I decided I was going to go.

[03:29]Wait, wait, wait.

[03:29]What great advice did I give?

[03:30]What great advice did I give?

[03:31]Um, I, I kept looking at the, the guy who sells the record's feet and he asked me to leave immediately.

[03:36]So I, I, I had to go to a different record store this time.

[03:40]Oh, I asked for that one.

[03:45]Okay.

[03:45]Sorry to interrupt.

[03:47]So I, I decided to go back to my local record store and I went in with a plan this time.

[03:52]And so I thought I'm going to go in there and I'm specifically going to look for.

[03:56]Prince purple rain.

[03:57]And then if for whatever reason they don't have it, I'm just going to go down the top 500 list until I find a record that they have.

[04:05]Oh, this is exciting.

[04:06]Oh my God.

[04:07]I can hardly.

[04:07]I'm on pins and needles.

[04:08]I got it.

[04:08]They had to have purple rain, but it was probably like 35 bucks.

[04:11]Shh.

[04:13]Do you hear that?

[04:15]It's time to talk about.

[04:26]So excited for this.

[04:27]I love this segment.

[04:28]So I go into the record store and like I said, this time I've got a plan because I don't want to panic.

[04:32]I don't want to get record store anxiety.

[04:34]I just want to go in there and run my system.

[04:36]And so I go in and I start running my plays and I'm starting, I go look for a Prince purple rain and I don't find it at first.

[04:42]Oh yeah.

[04:43]I script the first 20 plays of this.

[04:45]I'm like, I'm like Mike Martz or whatever that guy's name was from the Rams.

[04:49]Oh yeah.

[04:49]I love it.

[04:50]Bill Walsh.

[04:51]Yep.

[04:51]And so I start going through and I don't see purple rain, but I start kind of going through all the, the use.

[04:55]The use records and I'm just going down the list.

[04:58]So I go back to pet sounds.

[04:59]I'm, I'm doing Joni Mitchell blue.

[05:01]I'm going down all the list of anyone we've covered that I don't already own.

[05:05]They don't have any of these right.

[05:07]Record stores have nothing good.

[05:08]I I've kind of come to the conclusion, but eventually I decided I was kind of freaking out.

[05:14]They had no Pearl jam.

[05:15]I didn't want to ask the guy, cause I looked at his feet earlier, no Pearl jam record, zero.

[05:20]That's not true.

[05:21]And so eventually I decided, okay, I'm going to switch my.

[05:25]Strategy.

[05:25]And I figured I would walk you guys through my strategy and what I came up with.

[05:29]So I thought, I thought you guys would be excited about this.

[05:31]Okay.

[05:31]If you want to follow along at home, go into a record store, push pause on the podcast, go into a record store, get in there, really settle in and then push play and do the step-by-step things that Russell's going to tell you right now.

[05:42]Yeah.

[05:42]Pretend like we're in your like mission impossible.

[05:44]Exactly.

[05:45]So the first thing, the first thing I did, I figured they had to have Prince purple rain.

[05:49]I just had to go look for like the new record where there's, there's like 20 or 30 new records up by the, the door.

[05:55]I walked over there and yes, they did have purple rain on vinyl.

[05:59]So I picked up purple rain as my first record of the day.

[06:01]Nice.

[06:02]Yes.

[06:02]And is it like a special purple vinyl reedition re reissue or anything?

[06:07]That doesn't look like he's opened it.

[06:08]It, it, oh, it's open.

[06:10]Can you not see the, the Prince poster on the back of my wall in the zoom call right now?

[06:13]It's covering up his D'Angelo poster.

[06:17]He had up there before, but yeah, I see it.

[06:19]So after I found Prince purple rain, I decided I'm going to go to the bargain bin and buy the.

[06:24]Cool.

[06:24]This one I can find for a dollar, whatever I go, I'm going to flip through there and pick one out for a dollar.

[06:29]Russell, where did you go?

[06:30]What store did you go to again?

[06:31]I missed it.

[06:32]It's a, the store in Richfield.

[06:34]I don't know if it's called cheap.

[06:36]I don't know what it's 60th in Portland.

[06:38]Yeah.

[06:39]Yeah.

[06:39]That's Minneapolis.

[06:39]That's a, I'll look it up.

[06:41]That's a great place, but yeah, sorry.

[06:42]I interrupted.

[06:43]So I go to the dollar, the dollar bin and I'm flipping through and there's a lot of stuff that I'm just, this is where I was panicking originally.

[06:50]Cause I'm like, I don't want to buy these terrible records.

[06:52]Even if, if Aaron tells me I have to buy something, right.

[06:54]But, but so I did come across, this is, I don't know if this is the one we, we listened to on the list recently, but I came across Linda Ronstad's greatest hits for a dollar.

[07:03]So I picked that one.

[07:04]For a buck?

[07:05]Ooh, she can tell.

[07:06]You know, you know who would be so excited for that is my wife.

[07:08]She is on the biggest Linda Ronstad kick.

[07:10]She was asking me when we're going to do her album on the podcast.

[07:12]Cause she wants to like watch a documentary about it.

[07:15]It got bumped way back.

[07:16]Yeah.

[07:17]I didn't have the heart to tell her that.

[07:18]I said, Oh, real soon.

[07:19]And then she'll, you know, forget eventually.

[07:21]The next thing I went to look for on the list was the next.

[07:24]The next highest album I could find that was up in the top 100.

[07:28]So I was just looking for anything that was in the top 100 and I'm flipping through all these records, just looking for something.

[07:34]And the one that came across, I think this is in the twenties is Carole King tapestry.

[07:38]Oh, Oh yeah.

[07:40]I love that album.

[07:41]That's when I listened to that on the list.

[07:43]So good.

[07:43]So good.

[07:44]So far away for my fourth album.

[07:48]I just wanted to get something that I thought would be super fun.

[07:50]And I came across this and we've talked about this one before and I had to get it.

[07:54]It is the cocktail soundtrack with.

[07:56]Oh, and the cover of rave on, on there.

[08:01]Oh, there's some good stuff.

[08:03]Now, now Russell, I got to ask you, I have to ask you when you brought the cocktail.

[08:08]I hid that one at the bottom of the stack.

[08:10]Do that record guy give you a look?

[08:14]I mean, cause this would be what would make me nervous.

[08:16]I mean, you're buying prints, you're, you're, you're buying some legit ones and then you're getting the cocktail soundtrack.

[08:20]Well, Rob, yes, I was a bit nervous and I kept literally,

[08:24]I sat in the corner for a little bit,

[08:26]like moving them around in an order where I thought it would be most respectable because he's like,

[08:30]do I put the prince one first?

[08:32]Cause then he's probably like, oh, this is just some dude who lives in Minnesota.

[08:34]He's buying prints.

[08:35]And then the other ones I was like, uh, maybe he's just buying this cheap $1 one.

[08:39]So I kind of had to go through a strategy of how I, how I presented them.

[08:42]But while you were in the corner fiddling around,

[08:44]he probably had his finger right on the pervert alarm.

[08:46]He was like, okay, I'm going to hit this very soon.

[08:48]All these perverts coming in here.

[08:50]Well, if he were to hit the pervert alarm, he would have hit it on this fifth album because,

[08:54]I went with the most perverted one I could find.

[08:56]And that is the big bopper.

[08:59]Chantilly Lace.

[09:00]This is incredible moments.

[09:06]Did you buy my album baby?

[09:07]I love playing my album.

[09:14]I think it's so great.

[09:15]I died baby in a plane crash.

[09:18]Oh no.

[09:19]I'm the big bopper.

[09:20]I'm doing all the jokes from the last episode.

[09:23]Cause I can't think of.

[09:24]I can't think of anything new.

[09:25]I'm dead baby.

[09:26]Oh no.

[09:27]Have you listened to the big bopper record yet?

[09:31]I did listen to the big bopper and I had to listen to that Chantilly Lace song,

[09:35]but I was so disappointed because I thought the actual lyrics were Chantilly Lace,

[09:40]put it in my face like Robin sang before.

[09:42]And they're not, I don't remember what they were,

[09:44]but the big bopper album is actually pretty awesome.

[09:47]Let's be very clear for our two female listeners out there.

[09:50]That wasn't Rob baby.

[09:51]That was me, the big bopper.

[09:53]A character that when,

[09:54]when I say things,

[09:55]it doesn't reflect what Rob thinks.

[09:57]It is not the opinions of this podcast.

[09:59]I'm not circumcised baby.

[10:04]Oh no.

[10:05]Oh no.

[10:06]Oh no.

[10:07]Oh no.

[10:08]The big bopper ran out of things to say real fast today baby.

[10:13]So that was my adventure in the record store.

[10:16]And I feel like now I have a new plan and a new approach where I can go in there and look for,

[10:21]Hey, I'm looking for something that I just think is fun.

[10:24]The coolest $1 record.

[10:25]I can find the next highest one on the list and a new one.

[10:30]And the most perverted one I can find because I feel like I can execute on that strategy every single time.

[10:37]I like to think if you put the big bopper record on the counter and being like pretty perverted,

[10:42]huh?

[10:42]And the guy's like,

[10:43]wait,

[10:43]what you're like pretty perverted way worse.

[10:46]So that's why when you guys were asking me if I was embarrassed about the cocktail one,

[10:50]I was like,

[10:50]no,

[10:50]I was more embarrassed about the big bopper.

[10:52]Well,

[10:52]yeah,

[10:53]yeah,

[10:53]yeah,

[10:53]yeah,

[10:54]oh Russell,

[10:55]that's great.

[10:56]Well,

[10:56]I'm,

[10:56]I'm so happy that you're going into that record store.

[10:58]Now you're going to be the record store guy.

[10:59]No name records.

[11:00]Yeah.

[11:00]No name records.

[11:01]That's the 60th in Portland.

[11:03]It's a great place.

[11:04]You'll know you're comfortable in there when you're judging other people in there.

[11:06]Like when they're buying albums and you're like,

[11:08]I can't believe you'd buy the cocktail soundtrack.

[11:10]That's when you know,

[11:10]you've made it.

[11:11]Listen to some of these songs in this cocktail album though.

[11:13]Beyond Kokomo inside too.

[11:15]You've got don't worry,

[11:15]be happy.

[11:16]Oh,

[11:17]hippie,

[11:17]hippie,

[11:17]shake rave on by John Cougar.

[11:19]Mellon camp.

[11:20]Yes.

[11:21]That's all shook up tutti frutti by little Richard.

[11:23]This thing is,

[11:24]is a jam.

[11:25]It's fun.

[11:26]It's just super fun.

[11:27]I thought purple rain was a horny album.

[11:28]I was,

[11:30]I was wrong.

[11:31]That's a horny.

[11:32]It's not a horny album.

[11:33]It's all about God.

[11:34]It's all about living.

[11:35]We need a,

[11:35]we need a counter to start counting the hornies on this,

[11:37]on this episode.

[11:38]Yeah.

[11:39]Right before I started,

[11:40]I said,

[11:40]guys,

[11:40]don't mention the word horny.

[11:42]And they were like,

[11:42]huh?

[11:42]What?

[11:43]Uh,

[11:44]Roland going,

[11:44]man,

[11:44]how's it going with you?

[11:45]It's going good.

[11:47]I,

[11:47]uh,

[11:47]I keep listening to the radio.

[11:49]I keep coming up with a useless facts,

[11:51]but I actually heard one.

[11:53]I'm going to,

[11:54]I'm going to go,

[11:55]I'm going to go,

[11:55]I got a Prince one that I want to share,

[11:57]but I'm going to go first with a,

[11:59]a stat that I think is absolutely crazy.

[12:01]Credence Clearwater revival between March of 1969 and October of 1970 had five songs

[12:12]that reached number two on the billboard hot 100 list.

[12:16]Damn.

[12:17]And they've never had a number one song.

[12:19]No number one.

[12:20]Wow.

[12:20]But between March,

[12:21]1969 and October,

[12:23]1970,

[12:24]proud Mary,

[12:25]bad moon rising,

[12:26]green river,

[12:27]traveling band,

[12:28]and looking out my back door,

[12:30]green,

[12:31]all of them reached number two.

[12:32]None of them reached number one.

[12:33]And if I did enough research,

[12:35]I probably would have had what those number one songs were,

[12:38]but it's kind of hard to find on Google.

[12:40]So I just gave up,

[12:41]but maybe try to move.

[12:43]I would open it.

[12:44]I would go buy a CCR album and then look at the liner notes.

[12:46]I think that's where you'll find all your answers.

[12:48]Yeah.

[12:48]But I mean,

[12:49]none of them,

[12:49]those are my favorite CCR tune.

[12:51]My favorite is Lodi.

[12:52]I thought Lodi would have made it,

[12:54]but I guess not.

[12:55]What the fuck are you talking?

[12:57]What is Lodi?

[12:58]Lodi is a great,

[12:59]ah,

[13:00]Lodi is a great tune.

[13:01]Okay.

[13:01]Well,

[13:02]I'm going to play in the background.

[13:02]Do you hear it playing in the background right now?

[13:04]It's Lodi,

[13:05]Lodi.

[13:07]Yeah,

[13:09]but five,

[13:10]five songs in like an 18 month period that reached number two,

[13:13]but none of them reached number one.

[13:14]I thought that was crazy.

[13:15]And then the other thing is that Prince on his,

[13:17]the first album,

[13:19]that he ever put out,

[13:21]um,

[13:22]he,

[13:22]he was credited is called for you when he was 20 years old.

[13:25]He got the record plant.

[13:28]God damn it.

[13:29]Don't,

[13:29]that's my thing.

[13:30]Stop.

[13:30]What?

[13:31]Rosie,

[13:32]you're stepping on my bit.

[13:34]You're stepping on my bit now.

[13:35]No,

[13:35]I don't like it.

[13:35]It's the one bit I have actual information from Wikipedia.

[13:38]Damn it.

[13:39]Edit it out.

[13:40]Edit me out.

[13:41]Start over.

[13:41]I can't,

[13:42]it's too late.

[13:42]All right.

[13:43]But on this album,

[13:44]he's credited with playing 27 instruments.

[13:46]Holy shit.

[13:48]As a 20 year old,

[13:49]27.

[13:49]And I thought that is absolutely nuts.

[13:51]He's listed as all vocals,

[13:53]deep breaths.

[13:56]He's credited with having deep breaths.

[13:57]Hold on.

[13:58]Hold on.

[13:59]Let me finish.

[14:00]I dated a girl once with deep breasts.

[14:01]Breaths.

[14:05]This is.

[14:05]Yeah,

[14:06]I know.

[14:06]Oh no.

[14:06]Do they list the finger symbols as one instrument?

[14:11]Hold on.

[14:12]Electric,

[14:13]electric guitar,

[14:14]acoustic guitar,

[14:15]bass,

[14:16]bass,

[14:17]synth,

[14:18]singing,

[14:18]bass,

[14:19]fuzz,

[14:19]bass,

[14:20]electric piano,

[14:21]acoustic piano,

[14:22]mini Moog,

[14:23]poly Moog.

[14:25]What the hell?

[14:25]Those are all synthesizers.

[14:26]Arp string ensemble,

[14:29]Arp pro soloist,

[14:31]Oberheim four voice.

[14:33]Oh yeah.

[14:33]I was going to go with my Oberheim four voice tonight.

[14:36]Yeah,

[14:36]it's gotta be.

[14:37]Here's what I got for you.

[14:38]I love it when I'm all rolling with my four boys here.

[14:40]I'm going to switch my microphone onto my Oberheim four voice.

[14:42]Hello.

[14:44]Hello.

[14:45]Hello.

[14:47]I can't hear you.

[14:49]A clavinet?

[14:49]What's a clavinet?

[14:50]It's like a piano.

[14:52]Clarinet broke in half.

[14:53]I broke my clarinet,

[14:56]now it's a clavinet.

[14:57]I think it's a keyboard instrument,

[14:59]right?

[14:59]It's a sexy,

[15:00]it's a sexy clarinet.

[15:01]Yeah.

[15:02]Drums,

[15:02]syndromes,

[15:04]water drums,

[15:04]slapsticks,

[15:05]bongos,

[15:07]congas.

[15:08]Slapsticks?

[15:10]Finger symbols,

[15:11]and it says finger symbols.

[15:14]It's got,

[15:14]it's plural,

[15:15]Russell,

[15:16]just for you.

[15:16]But it counts it only as one instrument,

[15:18]not two,

[15:18]right?

[15:18]Don't.

[15:19]Guys,

[15:20]don't make me make finger symbol jokes.

[15:21]We might need to ask the Big Bopper.

[15:22]Don't,

[15:23]no.

[15:23]Oh, baby,

[15:25]even the Big Bopper's not going to make a finger symbols joke,

[15:27]baby.

[15:28]Wind chimes,

[15:30]orchestral bells,

[15:32]wood blocks,

[15:33]brush trap,

[15:34]tree bell,

[15:35]hand claps,

[15:36]and finger snaps.

[15:37]Oh, baby,

[15:37]did you say brush trap?

[15:39]Sorry,

[15:41]that joke was funnier in my head.

[15:42]I have to say,

[15:43]did you say that he played slapstick on it?

[15:45]I picture Prince like walking in,

[15:46]and there's a banana peel on the ground,

[15:47]and he's like,

[15:48]Slapsticks,

[15:48]in bondage.

[15:49]Yeah,

[15:49]he's like,

[15:49]whoa,

[15:50]whoa,

[15:50]whoa,

[15:50]whoa,

[15:50]whoa.

[15:51]That's the greatest slapstick solo I've ever seen in my life.

[15:56]So those are the couple of useless facts I got

[16:00]that I thought were pretty darn cool.

[16:01]Was guitar on that list?

[16:04]I don't know if I heard guitar.

[16:05]Electric guitar,

[16:07]acoustic guitar,

[16:07]yeah.

[16:08]Those are the first,

[16:08]those are right after deep breaths.

[16:10]On the list.

[16:13]Yeah,

[16:14]speaking of Bobby McFerrin,

[16:15]I mean,

[16:15]he did that whole thing with no instruments.

[16:16]I mean,

[16:17]what's more impressive?

[16:18]Nothing apparently.

[16:23]RIP this podcast.

[16:24]I mean,

[16:24]I just,

[16:24]why would I bring up Bobby McFerrin right now?

[16:26]Don't worry,

[16:29]Rob.

[16:29]It's all right.

[16:31]Don't worry.

[16:31]Move to Rosie's rolling.

[16:33]Move on and be happy,

[16:34]Rob.

[16:34]That was awesome,

[16:35]Matt.

[16:35]Nice work.

[16:37]Rolling,

[16:37]going,

[16:38]Rosie,

[16:38]how's it going?

[16:38]It's,

[16:39]it's rolling,

[16:40]it's rolling,

[16:41]going,

[16:41]good.

[16:42]It's going differently than it's ever been.

[16:46]I killed the whole podcast.

[16:48]And I'm coming to you live from my podcast studio,

[16:53]which is currently also my house.

[16:56]I'm living in the garage this week.

[16:58]I had the honor to travel.

[17:01]Is the rat there with you or not?

[17:02]Yeah.

[17:02]Yeah.

[17:02]So that's a funny story.

[17:03]I can hear the rats at night.

[17:05]Yep,

[17:08]I hear them scrambling around in the nighttime.

[17:10]Gotta trim that ivy,

[17:11]man.

[17:11]Trim that ivy.

[17:12]Trim that ivy,

[17:12]On Sunday night,

[17:13]it was a hellacious windstorm,

[17:16]so I couldn't hear the rats.

[17:17]But,

[17:18]um,

[17:18]last night I heard him pretty well.

[17:19]Uh,

[17:20]yes,

[17:20]I travel,

[17:20]I had the,

[17:21]the honor of traveling to Iowa for,

[17:23]uh,

[17:23]one of our,

[17:24]uh,

[17:24]our,

[17:25]um,

[17:25]best listeners wedding.

[17:27]And,

[17:27]uh,

[17:28]that was a wonderful time.

[17:28]So my family,

[17:29]but I did see,

[17:30]uh,

[17:31]I left my usual bubbles on quarantining,

[17:33]uh,

[17:34]in the garage.

[17:34]And,

[17:35]um,

[17:36]the,

[17:36]I think the most interesting part about that is that my garage,

[17:38]um,

[17:39]I mean,

[17:39]as you guys can imagine,

[17:40]I don't live in like a typical,

[17:42]you know,

[17:43]house.

[17:44]So our garage does not have an automatic door.

[17:46]It has a,

[17:47]um,

[17:47]manual door that slides and only closes with a padlock.

[17:50]So,

[17:51]um,

[17:51]my wife locks me in the garage.

[17:53]I don't even want to hear this.

[17:56]This seems like a fire hazard.

[17:57]This is bad.

[17:58]I don't even want to know this right now.

[18:00]I would never trust my wife to lock me in a garage and then later come let me out.

[18:06]Do you like tell a friend how to get you out just in case?

[18:09]Oh my God.

[18:10]I go out the window.

[18:10]So I,

[18:11]our backyard is locked and like there's a gate to our backyard that's locked.

[18:16]So then I,

[18:16]I hop out the window.

[18:17]So like when I have to go to the bathroom at night,

[18:19]I just hop out the window and it's like the reverse of that Beatles song.

[18:24]That rats looking at you like,

[18:25]what the hell are you doing?

[18:26]Instead of coming in the bathroom window,

[18:27]you're going out the window to go to the bathroom.

[18:29]It's a whole switcheroo.

[18:30]It's I know,

[18:31]but I will say it's been,

[18:33]it's been opposite day.

[18:34]Yeah.

[18:35]So I'm here at least until Friday when I get a COVID test that hopefully comes back negative.

[18:40]And then I'll be back Sunday.

[18:41]If your wife decides to give you a little more punishment,

[18:43]you sick freak.

[18:44]Aaron,

[18:45]the real question is,

[18:46]is how many microwaves do you have?

[18:47]Hit out there.

[18:48]And how many bags of microwave popcorn are right now?

[18:50]I mean,

[18:53]I would have,

[18:53]I would have those things rolling.

[18:55]Right?

[18:55]No,

[18:55]he puts the microwave.

[18:56]He puts it right into a thing of plastic and microwaves that.

[18:59]And he's like,

[18:59]yeah,

[18:59]I can do what I want out here.

[19:00]It's a man cave.

[19:01]I could just picture his wife just pulling that door down and just locking that lock.

[19:09]It just walking away with the biggest cheesing grin.

[19:12]He's fucking gone all night.

[19:14]Freeze free at last,

[19:16]free at last.

[19:18]So do you have to lock you in at like 6 p.m.

[19:21]Or how long do you have to be in there for?

[19:23]I mean,

[19:24]she usually locks me in about nine tonight.

[19:26]She locked me in early because I was in here doing the podcast,

[19:28]but it seems like a bad episode of that desperate housewives show.

[19:31]And then,

[19:33]and then I have a tent set up in here.

[19:35]Cause so the,

[19:36]so the rats don't get into the tent.

[19:37]And then I got the air mattress in the tent.

[19:39]Last night I listened to a podcast while I was going to sleep.

[19:44]Michelle and Dago cello on heat rocks talking about purple rain.

[19:47]So that was,

[19:47]that was wonderful.

[19:47]And yeah,

[19:49]it's,

[19:49]you know,

[19:49]it's we're,

[19:50]we're living.

[19:50]I got a lot of snacks out here.

[19:52]It's pretty good.

[19:52]Yeah.

[19:53]Okay.

[19:53]Shut up.

[19:53]We're still talking to you about you being locked in the garage by your wife.

[19:57]And then you're talking about how this is just like a normal thing.

[20:00]I got to ask you a question,

[20:02]Aaron.

[20:02]Okay.

[20:02]And I'll probably edit this out,

[20:04]but what,

[20:06]what if you have to go number two,

[20:08]what are you doing then?

[20:09]Like,

[20:10]are you,

[20:10]are you out in the backyard?

[20:12]Like,

[20:12]like,

[20:12]does your wife pick up after you like a dog?

[20:14]Like,

[20:14]do you have doggy bags?

[20:15]And you know,

[20:16]I am.

[20:16]So yeah,

[20:17]so I am,

[20:18]I'm sleeping out.

[20:19]You just start sitting by a bat on an airplane and letting it rip.

[20:22]Oh,

[20:23]I am.

[20:25]I'm going inside to go number two,

[20:28]which is usually around 8 AM.

[20:30]I'm pretty,

[20:30]you know,

[20:31]I'm pretty like pretty much right on.

[20:32]So I do that around.

[20:34]It's 45 today.

[20:36]And then I'm,

[20:37]and I'm,

[20:38]and I'm wearing a mask when I go inside and then I,

[20:40]I wear a mask.

[20:41]I go in about 4 PM and we close the kitchen door and I cook dinner.

[20:45]And tonight,

[20:46]I made tuna melts and green beans.

[20:48]It took me,

[20:48]it took me like 45 minutes.

[20:49]I don't know what's wrong with me.

[20:50]So you'll probably be going to the bathroom earlier than 8 AM tomorrow,

[20:53]I guess,

[20:53]by the sounds of that.

[20:54]Hey,

[20:55]I'm stuck in the garage with no bathroom and I have to be out inside to go

[20:58]number two.

[20:59]What should I eat?

[20:59]Oh,

[20:59]how about a ton of tuna melts?

[21:01]Yum,

[21:01]yum.

[21:01]I'm going to cook the seven course meal and let that thing last for like

[21:04]four hours.

[21:05]I come over,

[21:05]I have a huge gallon of milk and I'm just sitting in the garage.

[21:07]Oh yeah,

[21:08]this is great.

[21:08]This is fun.

[21:09]I mean,

[21:11]I have the keys to the house.

[21:12]Like,

[21:13]it's not like I can't get into the house if I need to.

[21:14]But you are locked in the garage.

[21:16]But you're locked in the garage.

[21:17]Yeah,

[21:18]but how high up is the window?

[21:20]Like,

[21:20]is it funny to watch you go out of the window?

[21:22]Okay,

[21:23]we're seeing it.

[21:24]Okay.

[21:25]All she's got to do is literally like.

[21:27]There's a lot of underwear in the garage.

[21:28]I don't know why he's got so many pairs of underwear up there.

[21:30]There's a big window right there.

[21:31]Yeah,

[21:31]but that's high up.

[21:32]That window is higher than your waist.

[21:33]So you're like having to,

[21:34]so like when you go out the window,

[21:35]do you go out like head first and then have to fall down and be like,

[21:37]oh,

[21:37]and then kind of flip.

[21:38]Well,

[21:38]I do.

[21:38]Yeah,

[21:39]I do have to like kind of step over like a hurdle kind of thing.

[21:42]And then like,

[21:42]yeah,

[21:42]I've tried not to crunch my nuts when I go out,

[21:44]but yeah,

[21:46]it's,

[21:46]it's,

[21:48]it's an interesting,

[21:48]you know,

[21:49]setup,

[21:49]but I mean,

[21:49]my wife's the one who's got it tough.

[21:51]Like my son's been awake twice a night for the last two nights and he's up

[21:54]before 7 a.m.

[21:55]So like,

[21:56]I mean,

[21:56]she's got it tougher than I do.

[21:58]Speaking of relationships gone wrong,

[22:00]Rob,

[22:01]how's it going with you?

[22:02]How's Roland going?

[22:02]What was I going to talk about?

[22:05]Oh,

[22:05]you know what?

[22:05]I am ordering right now.

[22:07]I am ordering Halloween,

[22:08]costumes for the kids,

[22:09]of course,

[22:10]because it's last minute.

[22:11]If you notice like Halloween is coming up in four days.

[22:13]I know when you're listening to this now,

[22:15]you're like,

[22:15]wait,

[22:15]this is in the past.

[22:16]Yeah.

[22:16]Get wrap your brain around it.

[22:17]So we're ordering the last minute and I was thinking of it and it's kind of

[22:21]coincidental ordering costumes because guess what?

[22:23]My favorite Halloween costume of all time was,

[22:25]and it happened at college.

[22:27]Guess what I dressed up as Aaron who's living in his garage.

[22:31]Yeah.

[22:31]I had a window.

[22:32]I was halfway through.

[22:33]By the way,

[22:34]Aaron type in like stuck,

[22:36]stuck step mom in window.

[22:37]And I think you'll get a very fun.

[22:38]just check it out sometime it'll it'll apply to you in the garage i think the intersection with

[22:45]that and the big bopper there's a they're a broad intersection between those two searches

[22:49]oh baby the big bopper is your neighbor and he likes to watch you go to the bathroom outside baby

[22:53]oh yeah you know that life oh no oh the big bopper's taking a weird turn baby i remember

[23:01]i went and bought a austin powers costume uh top that fit me it was a miracle i don't know who they

[23:07]were for that it fit me and then i went even more impressive i went to woodstock or ragstock i'm

[23:11]sorry uh i i was unlike joni mitchell i went to woodstock and i bought a uh leather pants which

[23:18]also fit me which is just mind-blowing now i think like if i had to go out and buy leather

[23:22]pants now that fit me i'd be like i does that even exist and then i cut the butt out of the

[23:27]leather pants with my awesome power top and i wore purple sunglasses much like erin in high school

[23:33]and i was prince for halloween and i walked around with my butt

[23:37]hanging out

[23:37]because i remember it being like oh no am i gonna have to like shave my butt because my butt's gonna

[23:41]be hanging out and then when i put on the costume much like prince's i think mtv music awards when

[23:45]he had his just two butt cheeks hanging out my butt actually looked a lot like prince's a lot

[23:50]of people don't realize this i actually have a very small butt for how big i am and it's totally

[23:54]hairless it's like two hard-boiled eggs sticking out of the pants and i had so many hot blonde

[24:01]attractive women take pictures with my butt in college and a few of them have sent them to me

[24:06]like in the last year or so and i'm like oh my god i'm gonna have to shave my butt because my butt

[24:07]is so big and i'm like oh my god i'm gonna have to shave my butt because my butt is so big and i'm

[24:08]like best days of my life right there my kids are like what'd you say and i'm like yeah you heard me

[24:12]best days of my life i'll say to your face so i was gonna ask you guys what is your halloween what

[24:17]was your best halloween costume that you ever had what were the one you were most proud of

[24:21]i have two my first one is i also have two for for a few parties i would say early 20s i went

[24:29]as hollywood hulk hogan the the pro wrestler where i painted on like the black beard i had

[24:34]the championship belt so i did that once there is a black beard and i had the championship belt

[24:37]picture of you with that outfit and then where i am just wearing an adult diaper and i have a big

[24:42]bottle and i was the human baby yeah that was just a friday it wasn't halloween or anything

[24:46]don't kink shame me please but my second one i think was actually pretty cool so

[24:53]this job i had out of college i used to work in kind of a cube farm you know you're working with

[24:57]all these people in cubes and in my cube group and our team it was me and seven women so we

[25:02]decided to for our like halloween thing at work i went as snow white and they were the seven

[25:07]dwarfs so one of my co-workers went online this is so much funnier with the visual of russell as

[25:13]snow white i think that's very very funny one of my co-workers goes online and purchases some snow

[25:19]white outfit but then they had to cut the back out of it and put like a spandex filler in there

[25:25]sounds like there's no way that thing was gonna fit me so i ended up you know getting the wig

[25:29]and then i went as snow white and they were the seven dwarfs and we actually won a 200 gift card

[25:35]and the lady who said

[25:37]next to me took it and then we were gonna go out and do like a happy hour or something and

[25:41]she claimed she lost it and i know damn well she spent that shit she used it wow that's cold shit

[25:47]that's some cold shit which dwarf was she lie

[25:50]okay wait wait no no no no i'm gonna edit a better joke in which dwarf was she

[25:58]lie i can't think of another one god dang it okay so i stalled the podcast

[26:04]how it kind of spans both the

[26:07]super masculine and super feminine i've been hollywood hulk hogan and snow white

[26:12]matt what about you uh go to rosie go to rosie for matt's like i dress up for halloween my kids

[26:18]would kill me they're not even allowed to my kids aren't even allowed to dress up for halloween for

[26:21]halloween i teach them discipline my when i was a kid my mom went all out for me one time and made

[26:27]made me a karate kid uh costumes i had like the full with the full karate kid headband and

[26:31]everything so shout out my mom for hooking me up were you a karate kid were you cobra kai never

[26:37]dies like johnny lawrence sweep the leg or were you were you no that would have been son i saw a

[26:41]picture of this his mom his mom dressed him up like mr miyagi it's very controversial i did not

[26:46]like it i thought it was super offensive and i think it's wrong no russell true story i didn't

[26:53]learn that it was more fun to cheer for the villain until i met russell so i yeah i was full

[26:56]on you know ralph macho i was not i didn't i didn't realize how much fun it was to cheer for

[27:00]the villain so that was a good one and then my other favorite one russell knows this one is also

[27:07]my son's first halloween he would have been like six months old and he had no hair at all

[27:12]and so if listeners you may not may or may not know that i am also bald so my son and i went

[27:17]as stone cold steve's austin and we both were stone cold we both had austin 316 t-shirts that's

[27:23]awesome i attempted a goatee shave my you know shave my head like i usually do he had some little

[27:28]jorts it was uh it was i'm pretty proud of that one that's awesome and matt isn't it the case when

[27:33]people ask who aaron is on the podcast that that's the the photo that you share with people

[27:37]that's the photo i share yeah here's aaron you know this fits his personality white trash guy

[27:43]drinks a lot of beer aaron how about how about you take you take your bald baby get some pants

[27:48]cut out the butt put your head and the baby's head through it and your prince's butt

[27:52]hello

[27:56]give me some candy i'm princess

[28:00]no we're here okay

[28:03]i'm dying

[28:06]you know what aaron i would die for you uh and let's talk about purple rain

[28:12]matt do you have you matt do you have your oh yeah i got mad at me last time i'm scared of

[28:17]man though no uh you guys will be shocked to know this but i can't effing stand halloween

[28:23]and i can't stand new year's daddy yeah

[28:33]rob i've never seen your arm move so fast

[28:36]to get that thing up i i i've never been good at dressing up finding a costume because you

[28:44]always think you've got the best one and then somebody like russell always comes just way over

[28:49]the top it's got an awesome you know uh is this is this because you dressed as regular hulk hogan

[28:54]that one time and then russell showed up as hollywood yeah hollywood hulk with his nwo

[28:59]you went as just hulk when he's not in costume everybody's like wait what and then

[29:03]rob showed up as the hulk hogan that had that um that that uh adult video that got

[29:08]taped of him by doctor or whatever and just topped us both oh i just had some sushi

[29:13]oh i love fucking my wife's friend brother

[29:20]wait i love fucking my friend's wife brother sorry gonna edit that in later

[29:28]okay let me get a clean take on that friend's wife's brother

[29:33]matt what you gonna do when hulk hogan pornographic style runs wild on you

[29:39]guys can we go through one podcast where i don't have to edit out so much stuff about

[29:45]hulk hogan sex tape please

[29:46]oh oh so i'll wrap it up but like you know the uh you always think it's gonna

[29:57]half is my fault right like i always wait till the 11th hour to try to find a costume

[30:02]because i just don't care yeah and then everybody else has done such a great job and then i come and

[30:07]it's just half-assed and i just can't stand i so i give up i give up on halloween i give up on new

[30:12]years we're not gonna whatever the plans are just i just want to go to bed i don't want you know so

[30:18]halloween new years they never live up to the new years have to do with this you just threw

[30:22]new years into the mix like everybody everybody plans you know in our 20s teens and 20s college

[30:30]you know there's always big halloween parties right now

[30:32]the guys came as babies and or wrestlers you know that's why that might be why russell and i were

[30:38]having dating problems at the time i have to say though matt i believe one year i dressed up as

[30:44]hulk hogan and rob dressed up as the baby and that was at a party at your house yeah it was

[30:50]it was matt was upstairs in his bedroom just gonna be like god damn it he was upstairs he

[30:56]was upstairs just like this like i gotta go to bed oh everybody thinks it's so fun to dress up

[31:02]well guess what you guys just don't understand man you just don't understand if anyone comes up

[31:08]here i'm gonna show him this hulk hogan sex tape now that is not the party by the way russell and

[31:11]i were at one time where we just played i just watched actually i just watched russell played

[31:15]mike tyson's punch out that was a different party that was a party at erin's house a quote-unquote

[31:19]party where everyone else is like everyone else is like this is so much fun and i'm like russell i

[31:23]can't believe this you're so good at this game like i was just pumping russell up if if rolling

[31:27]stone were to do a top 500 list of why i'm still single me going to a halloween party and playing

[31:32]mike tyson's punch out for two hours would be 501 listen if i could dress up with my butt showing

[31:38]russell you just have to have self-confidence you got you can do whatever you want okay the

[31:43]two little eggs anything uh i will say matt is sharing his screen and i'm looking at his excel

[31:47]sheet and it does just say all holidays on there so i think it just that's not good

[31:51]uh all right so let's talk about purple rain the reason we're a whole

[31:56]we're all here we're whole the reason we're all here to talk about purple rain i think the best way

[32:01]to talk about this is i want to talk about prince's just history in general rather than the

[32:05]album uh so prince was born in 1958 feel old yet uh sorry uh and he was born as prince rogers nelson

[32:14]prince is actually his real name because that was his dad's stage name his dad was a jazz pianist

[32:18]okay guys i just muted all your laughter i mean it's just and his mom was a jazz singer and the

[32:24]dad's stage name was prince rogers so that's what he wanted to name his son was his dad's stage name

[32:29]so literally it'd be like terry belia naming

[32:31]his kid hollywood hulk hulkin which i think is brilliant um but prince hated his father too bold

[32:36]jake the snake when prince was younger he hated the name and he made everybody call him skipper

[32:42]so this album could be skipper purple rain which is a whole different uh and he wrote his first

[32:48]song at seven and the song was called funk machine which is unbelievable if my kid wrote a song at

[32:53]seven named funk machine i'd be the most proud dad in the entire world and then he went to school in

[32:58]minneapolis of course central minneapolis and he met jimmy jam and he was like oh my god i'm gonna

[33:00]jimmy jam in 1973 and then went out to sausalito to the same recording studio that fleetwood mac

[33:07]was at they got the waterbed floors they got the nitrous oxide coming in and he made his first

[33:11]album called for you and you know what his first single was off that album soft and wet soft and

[33:17]wet okay who knows he could be talking about anything okay he's probably talking about the

[33:22]waterbed he's like oh this waterbed floor is so soft and wet i mean who knows sandwich in your

[33:28]i wrote down here he played every instrument on the album i don't think that's that interesting

[33:33]so interesting so i won't talk about that uh sorry i heard it was 27 of them so good uh and

[33:41]then this album was the first one where he started playing with a band the revolution

[33:44]and this album spent 24 weeks on the top of the charts in 1984 and he won an academy award for

[33:51]this for best original song score in a movie he was the first person since elvis and the beatles

[33:56]where at the same time in the united states he had a number one single an album and a film but i did

[34:03]want to say that i did as speaking of me screwing up this is one of the biggest groups ever in 2004

[34:07]i saw prince live at the excel energy center in saint paul and i bought tickets for me and my two

[34:14]friends and not the woman who i was currently engaged to and it turns out that that was a huge

[34:21]mistake and really one of those life lessons i'll never ever forget she was so mad at me she didn't

[34:26]speak to me for like days she was so upset and i was like i don't get what the big deal is and then

[34:29]i went and saw the concert and i came home she was like how was it i was like oh it's awesome

[34:32]it's the best thing i've ever seen and then it turns out that's also a mistake that i made so

[34:37]i've made you know it might surprise you i've made a few mistakes were the boiled eggs hanging

[34:41]out of your pants at that concert or not yeah i was dressed like prince at the concert and

[34:45]everybody said sir please i have a prince ticket uh mistake also if you're interested to hear it

[34:50]it's not so anyway the set list for the

[34:52]you know

[34:53]you

[34:56]he came to oakland in march of 2016 on a piano and a microphone tour so it was just prince with

[35:02]his with his piano i gotta listen to the album still yeah well that album's from 83 but this

[35:08]was like he was doing it again and i was gonna get tickets my brother was in town i got in on

[35:14]the ticket master site it was at oracle arena and tickets were 275 so i i was thinking about

[35:21]buying tickets i got in i had some seats and then i thought i don't know you know oracle's big

[35:26]it's just piano nothing else maybe that's maybe this is overpriced and that was march of 2016 and

[35:32]then you know what was it six weeks later he was gone and i i totally i every day so that that

[35:38]moment that regret changed my relationship to music and musicians and and even how i think about

[35:44]decisions in my life because what would i what have i done with that that three times 275 dollars

[35:49]whatever that is experiences over things maybe yeah maybe experiences i can't believe that a guy

[35:54]who's sleeping who's locked in his

[35:56]yeah

[35:56]sleeping in a tent on an air mattress would make a bad decision like this is so crazy

[35:59]yeah i would have got a garage door opener personally

[36:03]oh wait aaron's not here he has to go to the bathroom he is opening the window and falling

[36:09]out but i want to show you this real quick i just i'll hit the i'll hit the high notes he played on

[36:14]this in this concert 34 songs uh it was the musicology tour so he started with that but

[36:18]let's go crazy and then i would die for you then when doves cry and then baby i'm a star so it's

[36:24]just purple rain hit after purple rain and then i would die for you then when doves cry and then

[36:26]purple rain hit and then he played a uh he played some other songs i don't want to get into but then

[36:29]he played a solo guitar set where it's just him and a guitar little red corvette cream raspberry

[36:34]beret oh that's my favorite prince song uh and then he finished with and then a bunch more but

[36:40]he finished with then uh kiss and then purple rain was his final so should we get into this

[36:45]track by track yeah why not uh the first song so aaron you're telling me that this song is about

[36:53]god and i think this first song especially are you

[36:55]telling me this album's about god can you explain that real quick yeah well i think all of prince's

[37:02]life he sort of uh i wouldn't say struggled but he was always thinking about the spiritual aspect

[37:08]of things i don't know exactly when he became fully jehovah's witness i don't know the whole

[37:13]he was raised as a seventh day he was raised as a seventh day adventist by his parents right so he

[37:19]was always thinking about these things and i think he i think let's go crazy at least according to

[37:24]the internet was was

[37:25]an exhortation to live in a christian manner and that the elevator was supposed to mean the devil

[37:30]and that this was a song where he was uh you know talking about let's live our life in a christian

[37:35]way and if you've seen um there was a concert uh from the purple rain tour that was on youtube

[37:42]briefly over the summer and uh which is incredible to watch i don't know if it's still there but um

[37:47]he goes through some very extended uh sort of skits where he's talking to god and dealing with

[37:53]his guilt and uh

[37:55]dealing with conversations with god so i i think he was always thinking about god and the spiritual

[37:59]um and it's not that different from marvin gaye to me i mean it seems like it follows a through

[38:05]line of someone who was like clearly very much into sex and just didn't see a clear delineating

[38:13]line between god and sex he was able to sing about both but i know that some of these songs

[38:17]on this album he stopped performing in public for a while um i would die for you being one of them

[38:22]all right so let's talk about let's go crazy

[38:25]i didn't know that the lyrics

[38:27]the lyrics of the song is actually d elevator if you read the lyrics

[38:33]which i didn't i never knew that and i still don't know quite what that means but apparently

[38:37]it's the devil it's a good way to start an album too oh my god all time start all time

[38:43]when i listen to this first of all this album is 42 minutes so i listen to this like a million

[38:48]times it is over and over yes i love it so fast every time this song came on i was just like this

[38:53]is so good now there's a couple songs on this album i would start to skip but this this intro

[38:57]and then when it kicks in here holy shit yeah this is just every time you hear it it just puts you

[39:03]right in the mood for the for the album you feel like you could do without the guitar solo though

[39:09]no every guitar solo on this album oh thanks i couldn't do it yeah every every prince guitar

[39:17]solo is essential to me did you just say can you do without the guitar solo in a prince song yeah

[39:23]like this one like all of a sudden it starts going into like the i don't know it seems kind

[39:28]of cheesy to me but like on this one if the if the guitar solo is out of this where he's just

[39:33]noodling up and down i could do without it in this song whoa is that a guitar solo it sounded just

[39:38]like it i think you could you could pick a guitar solo from any song after this one and say like oh

[39:45]yeah they were you know taking from prince like uh i feel like black or white by michael jackson

[39:50]is definitely but like the end of it the star you know the the

[39:53]standard blues ending like oh i love it that's when it just gets loud i love it doesn't matter

[40:00]to me man 42 minute album they can do whatever they want it's only 42 minutes it's great i love

[40:04]it but i like it i like i like to disagree i like i like the respectful uh different opinions

[40:09]what no that we're we're fight fight fight fight fight i enjoy it i think it's good

[40:14]take me with you this is the fifth single off the album it's a duet with apollonia

[40:23]so this i actually watched purple rain the movie for the first time last night have you guys seen

[40:28]the movie before what do you think of the movie i've never seen it i i i was gonna do it for this

[40:32]one and i was like no my time is it's a pretty cheesy movie but i i just love seeing prince

[40:38]perform so that it's worth it for that but the movie itself like doesn't really hold up i don't

[40:43]know it does not hold it up at all there is a point and i'll try to be as as polite about this

[40:49]as possible where he essentially meets this this woman apollonia

[40:53]their first date is essentially a motorcycle ride where they're both dressed like rob with

[40:56]the chapless pants yeah he convinces her to get naked and jump into a lake because it's supposed

[41:01]to be lake minnetonka but it turns out it's not and then he gets on his motorcycle and drives away

[41:06]and she's pissed and then he picks her up but then they're happy again and then to be frank he there's

[41:13]like physical assault involved it's very like uncomfortable and then yeah and she leaves him

[41:17]there's like some misfires but then he sings purple rain at the end and it's all good it's

[41:22]yeah i i love all the shots of him performing live but it's i don't think it's a great film

[41:28]that movie sounds a lot like my life except in like instead of going into a lake or whatever

[41:32]i'm going to a prince concert by myself and then speeding away in my motorcycle yes yeah and and

[41:37]not physically you're not physically assaulting anybody no no of course no that would be terrifying

[41:42]to me i think we talked about that last week with my fighting that it would not go very well

[41:45]there i'll say this there was a point though where i'm watching the movie and it's you know

[41:49]20 minutes in and i think he's met her like for for a minute and

[41:52]they're they go for a ride on this motorcycle she convinces her he convinces her hey you need

[41:58]to get naked and jump in this lake right now and she doesn't he drives away on the motorcycle i'm

[42:02]sitting there and i'm like wait this is gonna work for him yeah the kid it works for the kid

[42:07]you need to get a purple outfit you need to get a purple motorcycle you need to go pick up women

[42:13]on this motorcycle i don't care if it's winter or whatever go out there pick up women this is

[42:17]your new plan you need to do what would prince do wwpd what would prince do just follow that you're set

[42:25]megan i'll just say this you know the apollonia there's a number of i don't know if apollonia is

[42:32]considered a backdrop singer backup singer i think she's you know she's a duet but the backup singers

[42:40]on this album are unbelievable yeah if you actually listen to you know the use of them and i don't know

[42:46]if it's how loud they are rosewood i don't know if it's how loud they are i don't know if it's how loud they are

[42:47]maybe you can help me but it seems like they're very pronounced in all of the songs they're

[42:52]phenomenal yeah they're excellent and i i think so i did try to listen to see if i could hear

[42:58]differences between the the regular you know the original purple rain and the the 2015 remaster and

[43:04]i felt like in the remaster the background singing was even clearer and sort of pumped up

[43:08]but yeah i think it's just it was just um i think you're just picking up on prince's attention to

[43:14]detail that you know everybody was locked in and then i'm sure every

[43:17]sound on the album was just gone over meticulously but yeah the whole band is just

[43:21]tight i mean when he's allowing the band to play like i know he's doing stuff on his own a lot

[43:25]can you guys tell me like apollonia like i knew about that from that kanye song

[43:28]right yeah gold digger where he or no uh bigger faster stronger what what is what did he just have

[43:35]like these women that he would make into superstar like singers and then also date them is that what

[43:40]he would do like is it was it one of those things i think so he also definitely had a type he was

[43:45]like really into the you know ethnically ambiguous type of music and he was like i don't know if it's

[43:47]uh ladies i mean i think prince's relationship to women uh throughout the 80s and even the 90s is

[43:55]like maybe um the not so bright mark on his life and his biography right and maybe is why late in

[44:03]his life he really tried to put women over i mean he always tried to put women artists over but

[44:07]particularly in his at the end of his life he was really putting female bands over because i don't

[44:12]think he always treated women the best well so i think that's a good intro to this next song called

[44:15]the beautiful ones this first of all

[44:17]this replaced a song on the album that was called electric intercourse so we have we don't get to

[44:22]hear electric intercourse which is a real bummer uh but this is a song about vanity and vanity is

[44:28]quite the story right vanity is a girlfriend that he met in 1980 and she was not named vanity that

[44:33]was the stage name that prince gave her okay because he said that he she was so beautiful

[44:40]that when he looked at her he thought he was looking at himself that's kind of weird

[44:47]what no would you date a female version of yourself aaron i would date a female version

[44:51]of myself oh yeah in a second seriously would you date a female version of yourself i'm not

[44:57]kidding absolutely not no no what that would be a good i would date a female version of any of you

[45:03]guys so we're all rob's married rosie's married i'm married the three of us have absolutely gone

[45:11]up in the world you know so if we were dating ourselves we'd be going away somehow we got lucky

[45:17]absolutely up you know way above our way above our pay grade quote unquote pay grade yeah i don't

[45:23]know i'd be coming way back yeah that's true and i'd be coming way back down i mean i would lock

[45:30]myself in the garage if i were dating myself and now who comes in a female version of you

[45:34]also locked in the garage think about it totally totally bald can you can you can you imagine matt

[45:41]and mathena they're them just sitting in there with their double knit sweatshirts like the trick

[45:47]i'm buying they're turning the lights off that's so good and russell just held a sign yes i would

[45:54]date a female version of me good i'm glad to hear that so this is the beautiful ones

[45:57]by the way if you can see in my notes i did write down ask the guys if they would date a female

[46:03]version of themselves this song is cool though when you watch the purple rain the movie this is

[46:11]pretty intense when he's singing this song in the movie right yeah this is the first time on the album

[46:17]all the way go and i think one of the things that is difficult for me thinking about how to talk

[46:29]about this album is what could we say that hasn't already been said about this album but i might

[46:33]surprise you guys and say that a thought popped into my mind listening to this that maybe no one

[46:38]has said before about prince which is that that he has a lot of rats running around in the background

[46:42]as a sound effect and you can't figure out why

[46:44]when i

[46:46]listen to this song it's a pretty you know sparse simple musical arrangement and then he's just going

[46:54]ham on the vocals this is when he like really on the first time on the album just really lets it go

[46:59]and it it i've i've been uh in the last year and a half trying to read kirkagore

[47:04]and it reminded me of it reminded me like as a good single if grad you should read kirkagore

[47:11]it reminded me of how is that kirkagard in that i think you say kirk i

[47:16]mean it's danish i don't know exactly how to say it right but in fear and trembling he just like

[47:21]danishes

[47:22]he's so stoked about the old testament about the abraham story and so like the ability to work

[47:32]yourself into a frenzy over something simple and and is sort of dry uh to me somehow like i drew a

[47:40]i drew a connection there i don't know i i don't think my mind works correctly no no no i had in

[47:46]my notes i had in my notes bring up kirkagore

[47:48]that was by far no all the other ones i'm going to go back to all the podcasts scrub that out

[48:03]scrub anyone we've ever done out that was the number one aaron leftfield take of the week

[48:07]of all time big time not even it's not even close uh oh russell oh yes rob

[48:16]is the water warm enough yes rob shall we begin yes rob

[48:22]i gotta say this song is the one i skipped every time originally this song was supposed to be 12

[48:31]minutes long before they put on uh take me with you and cut this album to cut this song anything

[48:36]more 1982 to 84 ish than this song no and the fact that they named it like computer like

[48:43]like i will

[48:45]say though this starting when i was at work today like grading like papers and i'm sitting with all

[48:50]my co-workers and i'm listening to this and i was like oh this reminded me once i was in middle

[48:55]school and i was reading like a stephen king book after a test and there's just this graphic graphic

[49:00]sex scene and i remember looking around me like oh my god i'm like reading a sexy to the middle

[49:04]school that's exactly what listening to this song is like it's so sexy i mean it's just oh so good

[49:10]even the next one the first the first couple lines in the next one i don't know what darlin nicky is

[49:14]we'll set your pants on fire

[49:15]yeah i don't know this is the first dance at our wedding i didn't think it was too bad

[49:18]so this this is the clip russ saying by the way i want to be

[49:26]was it or not

[49:28]was it or not give me a break

[49:31]how can you not play this part you have to yeah i think is this the first time the word

[49:40]masturbate has showed up on the list so far i think it's sex fiend as well

[49:45]too yeah did you guys know that that song is like partially kind of responsible for

[49:50]how music started getting censored in the 80s and and i read that so tipper gore al gore's wife at

[49:57]the time bought purple rain for their daughter and heard the lyrics and freaked out and then

[50:02]that was what started kind of all these albums or having to put the parental advisory stickers on

[50:07]all the albums i thought that was crazy since al gore invented the internet he could just cut it

[50:12]out of the internet can you imagine that that was a song that offended people back then like

[50:17]compared to what we have now like it's like oh this girl masturbated in a lobby and everybody's

[50:20]like oh my god five years later nwa comes up and meanwhile of course mother fuck snoop mother fuck

[50:25]dre mother fuck death we're at the age of course where when we saw those stickers on an album we're

[50:29]like yes give it to me like when my grandmother bought me the adam sandler album and i saw i had

[50:33]that sticker i was like hell yeah this is what i get tricking my grandma to buy me albums that

[50:37]my parents wouldn't buy me oh yeah now this song was about someone named nikki

[50:41]now beck has also done a similar song about a woman named deborah and i wanted to pull this up

[50:46]because beck was definitely influenced by prince on this and i might argue that he does prince

[50:52]better than prince on this song check it out oh yeah this is way better

[51:00]now does he mention masturbating let's find out

[51:11]that is good russell those horns are awesome

[51:14]does he say something about a sister

[51:19]wow that so when you hear that you immediately think okay this is influenced by prince and i

[51:26]think i think beck does prince better than prince on that one oh yeah i totally agree i would rather

[51:31]listen to that than darling nikki and i didn't mind darling nikki but that song was a banger

[51:34]deborah woo russell i tried to go with you as often as i can but i cannot i just i can't agree i'm gonna

[51:41]i'm gonna i'm gonna be read the dissenting opinion on that one and edit this out rob

[51:47]what's a what's a more uh 80s name nikki or debbie

[51:52]oh we need to move on you really got to see this is nikki n-i-k-k-i i mean this is like yeah

[51:59]nikki with two k's this is 80s is again now i have a confession to make here okay when i was in middle

[52:05]school for some reason they would play when doves cry all the time on the radio station i listened to

[52:11]why it was a pop radio station but they would play when doves cry all the time and this was the age

[52:15]where i learned kind of i started thinking about like what sex was to me this song 100% was sex

[52:23]like the combination of this song in the video this is the sexiest song of all time it's it's

[52:29]not even close when you listen to that when i was like i listened to this and i was like oh my god

[52:33]like imagine the sweat all over your body i was like is this what sex is like now since then i've

[52:41]just listened to this so freaking just i think there are some prince songs that are like two and

[52:46]a half minutes long i'm not responding to that that's too easy of a joke

[52:53]this song if you listen to it there's no bass there's no bass guitar in this whole song

[53:00]i know isn't that crazy i never realized that before so it's a it's a big deal like prince

[53:07]was a funketeer man like it's a crazy thing for him to take the bass out it was like

[53:11]him saying let me see what i can do with one hand tied behind my back i imagine bass players

[53:16]heard this and they were like well shit prince isn't hiring bass players anymore we're screwed

[53:18]but listen to this oh yeah i mean sex

[53:26]i mean it's so good so the director of this movie apparently said listen we got the scene

[53:37]i need you to write a song for it he came back the next day with this song

[53:41]that i mean that's like it's it's musical genius on top of musical genius it's crazy

[53:45]i so rob you had the quintessential minnesotan experience with this song which was hearing it

[53:50]on the radio which like when i moved to minnesota everyone was crazy about prince and i i will be

[53:54]honest i didn't understand it uh until later in my life i learned this song from the romeo and

[54:00]juliet with the boslerman romeo and juliet movie when they sing it in that movie like i didn't

[54:04]even realize it was like so i i i late pass for me that that song was about a different member

[54:10]in apollonia's band the apollonia nine the band he set up for apollonia it was about i mean can

[54:15]you imagine if prince came and said oh here's a song i sang for you here's a song i wrote about

[54:19]you and is that song you'd just be like well i i heard maybe aaron or matt maybe you know this i

[54:24]heard that prince wrote a lot of songs for other people are there famous ones out there that you

[54:28]guys are aware of that prince wrote for other artists or other bands well yeah like the most

[54:34]famous shanane o'connor song of all time the other one i know is uh the other one i know is

[54:39]which he wrote for the bangles

[54:40]wow i did not know that yeah he wrote manic monday uh and then you know like i mean there's other

[54:48]stuff where he wrote like you know more stay in the time like some time albums are probably like

[54:53]entirely but it would be kind of a bummer if you were sleeping with him and he comes up with

[54:56]manic monday and meanwhile for some other woman he was like animal strike curious poses you'd be

[55:03]like wait a minute what i get manic monday and this woman gets a video of you in a bathtub so

[55:08]the keyboard solo at the end of the song

[55:10]guys we've got another where they recorded it he played it at half speed and then they sped it up in

[55:16]the recording and then what's so funny is that he made his keyboard player later be like hey when we

[55:20]play this live you got to learn how to play it this fast so he actually slowed this down and

[55:24]played it at half speed that's cruel and then he was like okay learn how to play this

[55:28]i mean even this is this the sexiest keyboard solo of all time

[55:36]and i know when i'm talking

[55:40]about sexy stuff and then you look at the zoom and you just see my face all close to the screen

[55:43]like it doesn't compute like it's like two opposite things but i just go from midnight to six

[55:48]what some some of our listeners will get that i don't all right uh i would die for you so now

[56:00]we're to the last three album the last three songs on this album this is how short the album is it's

[56:04]brilliant so let's have but let's ask our vinyl expert what are so are there three or four songs

[56:09]on side on the b side of the album i don't know if you've ever heard of it but i've heard of it

[56:10]it's very hard to see the back side of it because it's all sparkly cursive writing so i can't even

[56:17]really tell you offhand it's too the album cover is too fancy to understand what is on both sides

[56:22]i think when doves cry is the beginning of side because yeah side two like this i think is the

[56:27]first album we've been through where side two just like gets better and better and better all the way

[56:31]to the end well that was the problem is i texted you guys and i said i really don't like this album

[56:35]i really and i realized that when i was doing that i was listening to computer blue and then all of a

[56:39]sudden it's picking up steam it's picking up steam these last three songs are recorded live

[56:44]at uh first avenue and then they overdub some tracks on top of it but these are all live songs

[56:50]and they are so bang and i would die for you this is the song i've been singing the most off the

[56:56]album and then later i found out it's all about jesus where he's talking as if he's jesus yeah i

[57:03]think he stopped performing this one right because it was like uh blasphemous to talk as though you're

[57:06]jesus

[57:07]oh

[57:08]oh

[57:09]so good

[57:11]i was gonna say like a song about jesus seems cool to me like it's the same as like

[57:17]thinking a song about johnny cash shooting a man arena to watch him die is cool like if you think

[57:22]jesus is fun like get into it got it so this is one of the songs that prince actually performs

[57:28]in the movie purple rain so they're like when doves cry is in the movie purple rain but it's

[57:32]just kind of played in the background during a montage and purple rain he performs at the very

[57:37]end of the movie which is also very famous but he performs this one

[57:39]so i thought we could do a list of the greatest movie song performances ever i love this

[57:46]i like that oh yeah i think that's a good one yeah that's yeah that's a good one now movie

[58:03]songs are really broad so i had to narrow it down a little bit so the first thing i said is it has

[58:07]to be an actor or an actress in the movie so you can't take uh celine dion and take the song from

[58:13]the titanic she's not in the movie she's not singing in the movie that song is out i thought

[58:17]she was the captain of the ship that movie is what about like frozen i also have a rule i also

[58:22]have a rule matt no cartoons on this list and then and then finally it has to be performed

[58:29]in the movie so it cannot be just a theme song like will smith men in black i don't think it's

[58:34]performed in the movie it's just kind of a theme song for the movie but he's not

[58:37]singing it in the movie so that's kind of where i'm going to narrow it down a little bit

[58:41]number four on the list is from the movie dream girls jennifer hudson

[58:45]and i'm telling you i'm not going he gives it

[58:50]you know what she's no ruben stuttered but she was pretty good on her oh yes rob that's a pull

[59:00]that's a that's a pull the sad thing is ruben stuttered is not really a pull for me i probably

[59:05]talk about him once a week

[59:07]oh she's so good she's gonna play aretha in the aretha biopic in december i saw that

[59:14]that'll be good oh she's so good that's a good choice russell back to the one thing i also say

[59:19]is i also eliminated actors who are playing previous artists so the what the guy who played

[59:24]johnny cash and walked the line that is also out of this list too biopics out i like it all right

[59:29]number three on the list was a recent hit an awesome movie i think i've got lady gaga bradley

[59:34]cooper with shallow and the stars

[59:37]i'm out of commission so good i saw lady gaga live in las vegas after this came out

[59:44]and i missed i missed the one with bradley cooper by one weekend where he came and sang the duet

[59:49]with her i didn't know what to expect when i watched this and i watched it on a plane i don't

[59:53]i was not sitting in first class by matt but so i had to wait i didn't get drinks there was no

[59:57]dog shitting by me but i watched this for the first time and when she comes out on stage and

[60:02]sings that song in the movie it gave me chills that is like an amazing movie moment isn't it

[60:05]you gotta hold back the tears you feel great oh that movie was so funny i wish i had

[60:11]i was in the theater

[60:15]rob you're so lucky that you were able to enjoy this movie and find it funny oh no we almost

[60:24]brought our kids to that because we like the song so much and then we went to the movie and we're

[60:27]like oh no no no no no no it's so silly because there have been what three other versions of this

[60:32]movie so i should have watched one of them and been able to know what was happening i would have

[60:35]been happy for a spoiler alert for this movie i didn't know i was not prepared for the ending

[60:39]it knocked me on my ass for a week great song yeah good choice for us fantastic movie and fantastic

[60:44]music the next one i wanted to put his number one but i was worried aaron would yell at me

[60:48]but the next one is we're talking about record stores today i'm going to high fidelity

[60:52]jack black let's get a movie of all time good movie love that movie

[60:57]i mean i think he does a pretty good job i i can't i can't hate on jack black

[61:03]i think he's

[61:05]true to the song i do want to remind you this is the song now he's singing in this in a karaoke

[61:12]contest in the movie i also sang the song for a karaoke contest and won a free burger at rooster

[61:18]thank you i think jack does a good job i gotta give it up and if you have to if you have to look

[61:25]at this song from what you're expecting when jack black goes up there in that movie and then he does

[61:30]that it's pretty awesome it's pretty good yeah i can't i can't hate on it all right and the number

[61:35]one i had to put this number one or i felt like aaron may quit the podcast we're going with

[61:39]whitney houston i always love you the bodyguard yes

[61:43]i started this podcast by telling the guys i'm not going to repeat jokes and i think i've repeated

[61:52]every joke last week okay so i just crushed russell's list i am really i am hitting the

[61:59]on this podcast whitney houston

[62:00]this was on heavy rotation

[62:05]when i was listening to the radio in like middle school too i must have heard the song a zillion

[62:10]times this was always in the top five at nine you guys know who uh originally sang the song

[62:15]i do tell us matt dolly parton dolly i had no idea i had no idea until this year there's a

[62:22]you know documentary you know what's really crazy is that the story i heard is that for this movie

[62:27]they were like you know looking for songs and they're like what are we going to do for a song

[62:31]what are we going to do and it was kevin costner who was a big dolly parton fan and was like you're

[62:35]like hey you should just do i will always love you and whitney houston was like okay i'll sing it

[62:39]and then it's like the biggest hit it guys this is the fourth best-selling album of all time is

[62:45]the soundtrack to the bodyguard name one other song on that album i have nothing queen of the night uh

[62:52]run to you

[62:54]that's what nope don't make me close one more door okay okay okay

[63:00]is that what it is it's so rude that you would

[63:05]interrupt russell's list god i can't

[63:07]so if you guys could let's take whitney houston off the list i think that's clearly the winner

[63:15]where would who would you put up there one of these prince songs jennifer hudson lady gaga or

[63:20]jack black uh jack black i i gotta go lady gaga that song is too good i might give it to jennifer

[63:26]hudson guys it's a tie i might i might give her the top spot i might give okay russell you're the

[63:32]tiebreaker what do you think i have no joke on this one i figured i couldn't

[63:35]with whitney houston or aaron would quit after the whole thing

[63:38]aaron's locked in his garage i wouldn't take too much of his opinion of what he thinks

[63:45]all right baby i'm a star i love these fast up-tempo prince songs oh

[63:52]and the drum programming and all these this is one of the songs he performed at the superbowl

[63:59]is what i read yeah don't you think like some of this prince stuff like purple rain coming up don't

[64:04]you think that has more of a legend because of the song that he performed at the superbowl

[64:05]as of the superbowl show that superbowl show is one of the greatest things i've ever seen on

[64:12]television have you watched that recently russell the superbowl show i haven't there's actually a

[64:16]really good youtube clip on it's like a half hour kind of documentary about it where he goes out

[64:20]there and they're freaking out about the rain and prince doesn't care whatever and the one of the

[64:24]cool stories at the beginning is prince tells the producer i'm gonna go out there and i'm gonna stand

[64:28]there and do not hit that music until i move my hat or something there's a there's a cue and he

[64:33]says i don't care how long it takes don't do it and so he goes out there and he waits for like a

[64:37]minute yeah and the producer's like what the fuck's he doing what's he doing he's got to move

[64:41]but he waited waited waited and then he finally played it and then prince just absolutely destroyed

[64:46]i watched that clip at least once a year it is the best half time i mean the halftime show has

[64:52]turned into an absolute dog and pony show it's just horrible but this purple rain or uh prince's

[64:58]halftime show is the best one ever right of all 50 or whatever

[65:03]it's hard to argue with it it literally pouring rain during while he's singing purple rain

[65:07]you can't be if he would have paid a billion dollars to make sure that happened like to

[65:11]to bring in some you know rain storm i would believe he would do that i gotta tell you right

[65:16]now i watched the britney spears aerosmith halftime show when i was in russia in college

[65:21]and it was like four in the morning or whatever we're watching the halftime show and we were in

[65:25]a sports bar where they had pictures of like uh sports people you know all over the and one of

[65:29]the sports people they had a picture of was doink the clown

[65:33]purple rain this is actually the third single off this album after uh when doves cry and then

[65:41]let's go crazy by the way uh both of those hit number one on the charts purple rain never did

[65:48]the highest it got was number two do you want to know what song kept purple rain off the charts

[65:57]i really don't i don't but

[66:03]can you think of a more opposite song whoa out of here no way yeah is this song incredibly sexy

[66:10]yes but does it deserve to be above purple rain absolutely not but that's an interesting fact

[66:18]that's a very good fact is this lamb yes george michael and wham wham right yeah wow that's an

[66:24]atrocity uh after he although i would say that sorry i don't mean to do this but no that is

[66:31]interesting because i think a lot of people don't know about purple rain because they don't know

[66:33]i think a lot of purple rain was prince crossing over onto pop radio as a black artist so things

[66:40]like leaving the baseline out of windows cry was a thing like black music would never do that

[66:45]and george michael is one of the white artists who got play on black radio r&b radio so it's

[66:52]interesting to me that they would be like their fates would be intertwined like that at the top

[66:56]of the charts in 1984 interesting that was actually a pretty normal take i'm that was a good take i'm

[67:00]disappointed i've never been more disappointed

[67:03]you of you in my life you know what rosie go out and sleep in the garage you're punished

[67:07]and i will say lock you in i'll tell the story some other time but my mom did make me sleep in

[67:12]the garage one night so i know exactly how you feel uh so play the song we gotta hear the opening

[67:18]all right let's hear the opening here we go i gotta ask i gotta say i gotta listen to the song

[67:22]again i think it's great guys i have a question for matt on this song unless you imagine if he

[67:27]made a movie called wake me okay nevermind bad go go rob if we don't hear some purple rain now

[67:33]it's going to be a overturning of the podcast all right let's play it do you think us having

[67:38]been from minnesota or lived in minnesota aaron for a while do we overrate prince like do we put

[67:43]purple rain as an amazing song whereas most people don't because absolutely because i was never a

[67:48]huge prince fan growing up and this was the first time i listened to this album and i didn't i know

[67:52]a lot of the songs but i'm not a big prince fan and i love the album and then i listened to purple

[67:57]rain i'm like i could easily see this being like one of the best songs and i looked it up in

[68:03]his rank 144 and that kind of blew me away so i wondered if we just overrate it matt i i think

[68:10]and we'll maybe we'll hear the song at some point yeah rob you have to play purple right now i'm

[68:15]going to i want to hear what man has to say i'm i want to hear the song all right let's play real

[68:20]maybe i'll change my tape

[68:33]i'm not going to talk over the song i'll wait till this

[68:38]i'll talk over it originally that he wrote this as a country song

[68:50]and he wanted to have the stevie nicks sing this and so he sent stevie nicks a 10 minute

[68:57]instrumental is like here make lyrics for this and she was like uh uh and she got so intimidated she

[69:02]couldn't do it what you could imagine getting a 10 minute song from prince and he's like here

[69:05]write lyrics you'd be like uh be terrifying this is just 144 is that properly ranked

[69:13]the hell no no all right matt what were you gonna say i i'm i'm not a fan of that song

[69:20]i i'm not a fan of that song i like this album i i thought i didn't like this album i think

[69:27]because the album's called purple rain you know and so i associate this song with the whole album

[69:32]and i forget about the other songs and i discount it because of that and so i i went into this with

[69:38]a completely negative attitude listening to this album i i think much to like what rob said yeah

[69:42]because i don't like this song i mean it's fine it's a great song yeah and you know it's it's it's

[69:48]better than most kind of a thing but like it just doesn't it does better than like

[69:52]i wildly disagree i like if you would have told me this was like in the top 20 on rolling stones

[69:58]list i would have said it belongs every bit up there i don't know musically if it should but

[70:02]like that song just wails i think the other force the other four songs that they released i would i

[70:08]would take them over this song i i think that to the minnesota thing i think because the movie was

[70:13]here it was at first ave you know that's the name of the movie i think everybody just associates all

[70:19]of that with this song and wraps it up into one big bow and says this is the greatest song ever

[70:23]where i think the other four songs that they released are better than purple rain i i have

[70:28]to agree with matt i i think that i mean normally we would all say that oh man i think that song is

[70:31]being a big crumb bum and we'd all make fun of matt and then i'd make a joke about aaron's garage

[70:35]and you know we don't have to do it we don't have to but i think matt makes a good point this song

[70:40]is so different and it was a huge departure for him right like this was a song that he originally

[70:45]wanted to be a country and then he somebody's people were talking about how he tried to make

[70:49]it into a bob seger song which i can't really hear but it's so different than his like funky

[70:54]fast songs on this album i i have to agree with matt i don't think it's the best song on the album

[70:58]i do think it's a great song to me though it's like it sounds like a funk song

[71:01]played at half time it's like a funk tune because everything's on the one and then the guitar work

[71:07]to me is clearly influenced by funkadelic and eddie hazel so i to me it sounds like a funk song

[71:12]i didn't understand one thing you said so i'll have to just agree russell will now explain to

[71:19]us what guitar on the one means russell go ahead guitar on the one so i actually watched i did

[71:24]watch a different movie on prince and i saw him described and you guys can rip me all you want

[71:30]here but someone described him

[71:31]as kind of a cross between james brown and jimmy hendrix from from like a musical perspective and

[71:37]like a showman perspective and i thought that was what resonated with me and i was like that

[71:41]i don't know enough about prince's music to say hey that's in line or out of line but

[71:45]i thought it was pretty cool comparison i think i think that jimmy hendrix comparison is especially

[71:49]apt i think it's a whole different sound than what people were used to and it's just it's so

[71:54]great i i have to say guys one of my favorite albums to go to and i'm telling you i hope we

[71:58]have more 42 minute albums i don't think it's going to happen but i'm excited about it i'm

[72:01]excited for it i think it's gonna be great so many songs around this nine or ten nine so i also

[72:07]loved having nine songs to get through as opposed to like the 17 on that the abbey road the beatles

[72:12]or yeah and especially and especially when you know every time that computer blue song came out

[72:17]i was like skip skip that was all you ate it was great it's wonderful you know what i would say

[72:21]though when i was listening to it there were songs that i didn't like the first time but the more i

[72:25]listened to it over and over every time i would find something else in that song where i was like

[72:29]oh this is awesome maybe this is my new favorite song on the album like i kept hearing different

[72:34]stuff that i just thought rocked yeah that's the fun part of doing this i think i've had that

[72:38]experience with every album we've listened to so far oh so again to rob's point the top 10

[72:44]albums are good albums yeah i don't like i don't like you saying that's my point by the way that

[72:50]makes me sound very dumb well this wasn't this wasn't a top 10 album before though no no yeah

[72:57]which is wild to me and it rightfully got bumped up i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know

[72:59]i think their whole you know who they had coming in and voting prince prince it has to be bumped up

[73:04]it's it's totally the correct call and i have to agree with russell i do think listening to the

[73:07]music is the most fun part of making this podcast all right so let's get into our final rating

[73:12]system i made i'd made it like an hour and 10 minutes in without rob like ripping me openly

[73:17]and he finally got it in there uh rolling well toned do you think this album belongs right where

[73:22]it is at number eight on the list uh rolling boned is it too low on the list it should be a higher

[73:28]number or is it too low on the list it should be a higher number or is it too low on the list it should

[73:29]be a higher number or is this album rolling grown it's too high on the list it should be

[73:32]lower on the it's too high on the list it should be a lower number that doesn't make no it should

[73:38]be a lower number which in this case means a higher number because you're going down the list

[73:41]guys it makes sense to me i don't need to explain it to you russell what do you think

[73:44]rolling well toned rolling bone or rolling grown i think i'd never listened to this before and i

[73:52]don't think this is me being a minnesota homer on it i just think it some of the lyrics don't

[73:59]watermelon watermelon to all the lyrics this would be my favorite album to listen to so far

[74:04]that we've listened to i think so i don't think it ranks up ahead of marvin gaye or some of these

[74:08]other albums that actually have something like some meat to the bones if you will but i think

[74:13]that this was rolling bone with masturbating with the magazine in the corner or whatever it was it

[74:19]got bone badly and this was rolling bone this should be higher this should be higher than

[74:24]joni mitchell album i think it's higher than stevie wonder i think it's higher than abby

[74:29]road i think this should be in like the top three or four even though i don't think the the lyrics

[74:34]or the meaning really resonate with me as much as some of the other ones do i will say when i moved

[74:37]to new york i used to talk to people about minnesota and they would not be interested and

[74:41]i was like wait a minute everyone doesn't love minnesota as much as minnesotans do i'm like

[74:45]wearing my shirt minnesotans love two things minnesota and things with pictures of minnesota

[74:49]on it matt rolling uh what's your rolling going no rob what's your final rating good rob thanks for

[74:57]having me

[74:59]that's my favorite matt light of the podcast uh i'm gonna say it's uh what what is it when it's

[75:06]just rated just right what's that again rolling well toned and that's a funny joke that you would

[75:10]forget that yeah uh rolling i'll just say it's rolling well so i i fully i didn't listen to this

[75:15]album until about an hour and a half before the podcast i'm not gonna lie i just was dreading

[75:19]putting it on and i also got four new pearl jam uh vinyls myself so i've been listening to those

[75:25]wonder they didn't have that at that record record boys didn't have jack shit there yeah

[75:29]so i've been listening to that and so i i was fully ready to come in and just say this is just

[75:35]i don't like this album you know sign of the times is probably a more uh prince album for me

[75:42]but i'll say it's rolling well so there are some great great songs there's a couple really bad ones

[75:47]but overall it is um it it moved the needle as far as what music was from kind of the 70s into

[75:55]the early 80s and then to everything after that you know it was absolutely influential

[75:59]um and so i'll say it's whirling well toned at number eight um so i gotta agree with matt um this

[76:06]is not well i'll agree with matt and say that this is probably not my favorite prince album which is

[76:10]probably either sign of the times or dirty mind but um it's for sure to me better than a lot of

[76:18]the stuff we've we've already listened to so um you know i'd put it ahead of rumors i'd probably

[76:22]put it ahead of blue i would put it uh i don't know if i'd put it ahead of songs in the key of

[76:26]key of life but uh long story short i gotta say rolling bone

[76:29]for purple rain aaron that was a really great thing that you said about this album i just i

[76:33]can't get enough what you said oh i'm so glad i definitely listened to that

[76:36]that was a great take here i never really wondered why does what's up with prince and purple though

[76:43]before we get to rob's rating and i'm not really sure but he does wear that kind of purple velvet

[76:47]suit in the movie and so in honor of that tonight i went and got croft purple velvet port and i've

[76:54]been drinking port wine called purple velvet during this podcast you gotta be how much have

[76:59]you had you must be shit i thought you looked more classy tonight russ is more classy i've only

[77:07]had about one glass of it i don't really know what port's gonna do to me and if it being purple

[77:11]velvet i was like i can't overdo this one no i think a lot of the greatest wines ever made in

[77:16]the world were called purple velvet definitely not rob that was in the discount rack next to that

[77:22]big bopper album rob how would you rate this album uh i'll tell you what i would i i'll say

[77:34]to listen to bob dylan's album next because i had such a great time i had a great time listening to

[77:38]this one i just don't think it's gonna it's gonna do as well uh but i will say i think i am going to

[77:43]give this a ranking of hard own and that's because this would have been hard for me to own as a kid

[77:51]because i had that sticker on there what are you guys thinking i was saying i couldn't you know

[77:55]tipper gore screwed me over i don't know that's what i thought
